Not really sure how people can give him good ratings...i just finished his 173 course where close to half of the class failed. I had a 69.89% and he refused to round up, not to mention he required a 92% for an A. Needless to say, one person got an A. He does not know how to interact with other humans. He is better suited for teaching monkeys.
i also just finished his 8 week course, and i had a 79.76%, and he wouldn't round that up to a B either, even though i did all the homework and went to class everyday. He is unclear in his lectures, and could care less what grades he gives. 92% for an A is close to unacheivable in his class. Its almost like he likes failing his students. Avoid him
Not a very good teacher. Very unclear, and uses a piece of software called "EDU CO" (to take tests and homework online) Educo is absolutely abhorrent and WILL (without fail) malfunction on you, costing you many valuable gradepoints. He is not a COMPLETELY unreasonable person, I suppose. But I would suggest you avoid him if you can.
The material is easy, you just have to actually listen to lectures OR read on your own, OR do the online tutorials, and with a little effort... voila! A good grade. He is a little scatterbrained, but a pretty good teacher overall.
Small writing and low pitch, have to sit from 3rd row up to be able to grap what he's trying to teach. Never gives details about what we have to do for assignments - expects us to find out by ourselves. Uses an online course called Educo besides textbook, need to prepare at least $80 for this course (textbk + educo). Not an easy-grading professor.
Mr. smith was a great teacher, he was always willing to go the extra mile to help. Sometimes he got a little confused but I think it's his age. He does not grade on attendence, but you need to be there to keep up. He is easy to ask question and wants to help, but make sure and ask questions if you need to and you need to.
I was luckily able to escape his class after a few weeks of frustration. If you find yourself accidentally in his course, get out while you can! He's a frustrating and unreasonable. He spent most of his class time explaining the software he demanded his students use and not actually teaching.
Get out while you can! Grading is unfair. You learn nothing in class. You are expected to teach yourself. I currently have a lawsuit pending with EDUCO because it's never right and will without a doubt hurt your grade even more. You spend hours working on that ****! It is no help just busy busy work. Smith is nice but will not pass you with a 69.56
He is a horrible teacher. I did not learn one thing from him. He doesn't know how to explain anything about the projects you have to do and is overall the worst teacher ever!!!!!!!!!
Ne is easy on the eyes, but he really offers no help students.
He is by far the worst teacher I have ever run across. He does not know what he's doing nor does he know how to teach. Please what ever you do... do not take this section. I get straight As and I put in a lot of work but I am holding on by a C & its not b/c I dont get what's going on. I hate to say it but it is because he is the WORST teacher ever!
Doesnt help. Not in office during office hours. Does not teach well!!! DO NOT HAVE HIM AS A TEACHER!! AWFUL!
This teacher is useless, he pulls random numbers out of the air and doesnt explain anything. He is nice but he gives No extra credit work and no help with projects. AVIOD AT ALL COSTS!!!
This teacher goes very fast on material. He expects us to know everything. There is no text book to rely on, you can only study from the little notes you take. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM
Overall a decent teacher, you just have to have prior knowledge of the material. Easy A if you do all the online assignments, as his tests are fairly easy. He is difficult to reach though, but the tutoring center is probably better help anyways.
Never ever take this course with edward smith. It is a surprise when he is in his office hours, and there is virtually no way to study for his tests. He teaches at an incredibly fast pace and is not willing to help students. Also, he never reply's to e-mails and only at the end let people be aware of there grades.
great teacher!
teaches well
This teacher is in the top 3 worst instructors I have had In PCC. He doesn't repond to emails and doesn't give the students enough materials to work with. He teaches at a very fast pace and it is difficult to take notes because of that. In my class about half of the students that were originally in the class had dropped the class.
He is a good teacher. He has willing to help if we ask him. I easily got A in his class.
His class is easy. If you love Maths, it would be nothing for you. Just pay attention and ask him everything you don't know.
Can teach but doesn't go out of his way to show you things. Will certainly answer your questions until you are happy with the answer. Good math teacher, all things considered. I've had much worse!
He's a very nice guy, but goes WAY too fast to take notes and mentions critical concepts IN PASSING. The class was especially difficult because we had no book to resort to. EDUCO-the website you will use in the course-is a nightmare. Before enrolling, I read these comments and thought I could work hard and do well regardless. Please reconsider.
Who are all these people saying he is a good teacher? You can't take notes because he goes too fast. He doesn't use a book. When you ask him questions, he sits there and stares at you and replies with either "yes" or "no". How people were able to learn from that kind of teaching is beyond me.
He is helpful if you take the time to see him in office hours. the class goes so quick which is why the it seems tough. he gives 2 exams and a final. if you score higher on the final than the 1st exam he takes the final grade instead. my advice is to stick it out all the way, many people were in the 50's going into the final and still passed.
ed smith is a very fast teacher. he does not use a book either. when u ask him a questions he responds with another question, like something will click in your head. I wouldnt be asking the question if i knew the answer!! nice guy but does not know how to teach...
Online math 151 not recommended! he has many issues with the system that is used and if you find out that you were right he still does not give you credit for the problem. The hw that you spend hours on is only worth 4% of your grade, but thats the only material you have to study off of. No text book... Do not take this class.
Worst teacher, gives the class way too fast while you copy hundreds of formulas everyone is like what the hell is happening that's why nobody asks questions. Not helpful at all I wanted him to revise my final project which was finished, he said it would be like giving me the answers to a test, he seems to be mad at the world, really strict at grade
If you know the content 100% before the class you "may" get an A! I stress the "may". He is a terrible teacher! Run and hide.
I took Ed Smith for both an in-class and online course, and I'd take him again. He's very nice, and while he may not give you answers straight out, he'll show you where/how to find them. His fast-paced teaching style isn't for everyone, but if you're mathematically inclined, you'll do well w/him. If not, you'll probably struggle.
I took this class in the summer session so it was fast paced. If you pay attention and ask questions you can do well. You will have to ask questions but he has no problem answering them. I thought he was an excellent teacher and he knew exactly what he was doing. I am so well prepared for MAT 174. THX
Horrible! Does not explain what he is teaching. Passes over important topics too quckly and there is no book to help answer your questions. Do not take
After reading the comments on this page, I was really worried that this class was going to be horrible. However, Mr. Smith is laid back and helpful. It's easy to make up tests and quizzes in advance. Educo works fine, but can be a bit slow if you're doing the homework close to midnight. Attendance is based on a daily completion grade assignment.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! This guy is ridiculous. He teaches you everything on pencil and paper and then makes all quizzes and tests on excel and doesn't explain anything. He literally speaks in standardized test. If you don't want to shoot yourself, stay away from typical ed at all costs!!!
Terrible!! He's a nice guy and you can tell he's extremely knowledgeable, but that in NO way means he can teach you. He's never clear and is impossible to get a hold of for help. It takes at least 4 emails to receive a clear answer. This class is a lot of group work, make sure you pick good people. The tests are worth most of the grade, he drops 1.
he is very nice and hell try to pass you. i barely tried and passed.
He is a good teacher. Do the online homework, and the class is easy to pass.
After my first day of class I am already looking for a new class to transfer into. Mr Smith is completely unwilling to give you an example of how to do the problem, and instead just tells you to do it on excel w/o showing us even one example of how to do it. DO NOT sign up for one of Mr. Smiths classes, you will regret it after the first day!
Disregard comments on here. If you go to class and do the online HW you will pass. Ask questions, he doesn't mind. He is also good about answering emails. Very knowledgeable and overall a great teacher. Rumor has it that he was a power forward for Albuquerque in the NBA D-League.
If math isn't your deal I don't recommend Smith's courses. I've read other comments. I showed up every day, did the homework, tutoring, etc. This didn't help me. Got more out of tutoring. His lectures are fast paced; instead of answering questions he wants you to think critically. Really nice guy, extremely intelligent. Format did not work for me.
I am a science major, 4.0 student, this teacher was very difficult to be successful with. Took weeks to answer e-mails.Exams were not based on material from the text and made no sense. Received an A in class before his and Assessed into a higher class after his in which I got an A.No explanation other than his exams were impossible to pass.
Mr Smith knows his stuff, but that doesn't mean he can teach. He goes WAY too fast and is not clear. His daily class work was mostly hard to comprehend, and homework wasn't much help to your grade at all. Do not take this teacher.
The people who complained obviously never tried in Mr. Smith's class. Before enrolling, my assessment put me in 92, so I took it, realized that the first class applicable to my degree was 151, asked him how to skip 122, spent 2 sessions (1 hr. ea.) with him, and re-took the assessment placing me into trig/calc. He is AMAZING. Got me to like math.
I hated math more than any subject until I took Mr. Smith's class. People who said he doesn't help don't realize that he IS helping, just making sure you remember. He gives formulas, hints, and corrections, so that you can figure it out yourself. Also, if you have a valid question, he's very good at helping, and his EDUCO system is excellent.
DON'T take MAT 173/4 with Smith. The tests suck, the projects are ridiculous, and he's extremely unclear. He's smart, but can't communicate. Only 1 out of 24 students got an A in 173, and for the second project in 174, one team got an A, one got a B, one got a C, etc. I'm in the honors college at the UA and this was by far my most difficult class.
I found the class to be all over the place and confusing, the way it was taught. We had quizzes and homework on random days online as well as quizzes and homework in class. It was never consistent and cohesive. He would go extremely fast in class to force you to learn on your own, if I wanted that I would buy a book and study alone at home!
Everything that everyone is saying on here is so true. I should of listen to this site instead of wasting my time/money with this class. He a bad teacher and the self-pace thing is hard. To not take him, oh please don't; I know you will regret it.
I took the Mat 151 Emporium with Ed Smith over the Fall at West Campus. He was a very helpful teacher, and those of you who have taken Mat089 I wisely suggest taking this format. He is easy to confront if you have a problem. Math was never my best subject, and this format helped me get through this class.
IF you are used to that math 89 format, this is the class for you. Allows 2 retakes for exams .He does have group projects which are a pain. Class schedule is a one day lecture, next day project, next day lab, where you get tutoringdo hw, do it again for 3 days, then an exam. Just show up for exams and projects. Tutorials are all online.
He goes waaaaaay too fast. Be prepared to have no life with this class because content is so hard you need tutoring bad! And the tests and homework online have nothing to do with the tests that he has in class. Worst teacher ive ever taken.
LOVE this class. Its a hybrid class so while you are in lecture you can be doing the homework assignments along with him and redo them if you don't answer correctly. Every week theres a project. If you do do so well on a test you are allowed to retake it online. Passed with a B. No textbook but you do have to buy EDUCOSOFT, and EVERYTHING is in it.
Excellent teacher
This was the second time I took Math 212. The first time around I left the class feeling confused and a great sense of panic. I really thought it was going to be impossible for me to pass the class. Professor Smith proved me wrong. He took the time to explain all concepts until I understood them.
He is very good explaining the different topics, but his test are very very hard. He is also a tough grader. He is respected by the students. Expect long and Hard homework (WEBASSIGN). I passed the class with a bad grade, but I would take it again, because he is an amazing teacher.
He is a great teacher, very helpful and explains thing clearly. Material is online, but knows exactly how to explain what ever is necessary. Goes through your tests with you to make sure you get a better grade the next time. Great professor, highly recommend if you are ok with taking online math.
I don't have enough characters to fully explain why Mr. Smith was the worst math teacher I've ever had. Some modules actually had no teaching content associated with them; he just expected us to teach ourselves from reading the book. Took forever to respond to ?'s and when he did they were the most ambiguous, random, unhelpful answers possible.
Mr. Smith is a great professor! He's very patient and will make sure you understand the material. The tests were exactly like the reviews. If you study the reviews you will definitely do well on the tests. Took this class in the summer but would definitely take another one of his classes.
No communication. He told us that we would have the option to retake our tests and it was written in the syllabus. That was not true. He did not communicate with the test proctors and he did not communicate with the class. He did not outline material that would be tested. No additional resources were provided to assist with the hw. Terrible class.
Mr Smith is an amazing professor! Yes the content is quiet difficult but that is why you ask for help. He is very good at explaining the material.. ASK FOR HELP and you will receive just that! I disagree with all the bad comments
ZERO communication. He took several days to respond to questions- if he responded at all. In an 8 week pre-calc course every day is crucial. He blew off my request for one-on-one office time before an exam- and I was completely lost in the material. Do not expect support. If the material is easy for you then it is an easy class.
I have no idea why he was rated low some of students, maybe they could not understand his explanations of math. However, he is the best math teacher. Very mellow and clear. He is always glad to help and stay until you understand the problem. I WILL take a class again with him.
AMAZING!! BLESSED to have professor Smith in my life honestly i've never had such a great teacher before. I hope one day he reads this and knows just who is writting this. Ask and you will learn he helps you and knows just how to comfort you! Patience and passion into his job he loves it and you'll love him.
I took Math 188 online with him and honestly you're on your own. No outside help so I had to read the textbook or ask questions in the discussion. Only reason I got a good grade was because I have taken it in high school and the reviews basically tell you what will be on the test. Bad with replying to emails or questions. Don't recommend.
An AMAZING Professor , mentor , and an Intelligent person. He talk to you not at you. Ask and you will learn he helps you and knows just how to comfort you! Patience and passion into his job he loves it and you'll love him.
Terrible! Does not know the material past how to plug it into a calculator. Spends all his time with a select few students, so good luck getting any help.
He is an amazing math professor. I had 3 semesters with him, basically he is the best. Very clear lectures, and he makes sure you understand 101%. I definitely will take his class.
Spraying water in the desert... He is obviously protected by the school. Go take a math teacher's class.
When asking a question he helps explain it in a simple way! And will do whatever it takes to help you pass your test!
Awful he leaves you high and dry, I have tried asking question with no avail. Grading is completely crazy, and the homework is outrageous. Be ready to teach yourself if you take MAT188 and MAT189.
Had his class for math 95 and I found him to be an amazing teacher. I have an incredibly hard time with math and he explained the subject and if we had questions he would answer what we asked, not just repeat the lesson. He displayed the lessons on the smart board and used my math lab which is super useful.
There is a huge difference between the way the book describes problems and the way he teaches it so get ready to do double the work. His grading on tests is the harshest I have ever seen. We had an exam review and he told us everything on the test would be on the review and 4/14 questions were not!!Nice guy but really tough to get an A.
Nice guy, very hard grader! Minimum of 2 point deduction for the simplest mistake, like if you didn't round to the nearest decimal. He'll always stay behind and answer any questions you have and personally walk you through each problem, but you're gonna have to teach yourself a few tricks! Getting an A is out of the question, its a HARD CLASS!
He will give you blatantly wrong answers that tutors will correct (once he's walked away), and refused to explain in depth ("I just have years of experience"). His class was scheduled to start on a Thursday (according to Pima's My Courses tab), and he still counted everyone as absent for Tuesday (the intended? date). I will never take him again.
The worst online instructor I've had. Expect lots of point deductions with no explanation. He contributed nothing to the class. In fact, he in no way enhanced my learning, he just hindered it. Very disappointing.
Ed was a great professor for Calc II, which is a hard class as is. If you take a summer section expect the amount of hw for a full semester, but crammed into 5 weeks. Aside from the unrealistic amount of hw, he made sure we had plenty of examples of test questions that were similar to the tests and brought much interest into the course.
Hands down would never take again. Literally the worst math teacher I have had. I spent more time researching how to actually solve math problems than I did learning what was actually taught. There's also videos in the course that may be either on point or completely not what the homework is about. No Communication at all
He doesn't work with you ever. Nice personality but i wish I went elsewhere for my classes because I can't tell you what I've gotten out of his class.
Save yourself the time and take anyone else.
1st day of class: - No syllabus - not present for first day of class - has the students take a quiz
The worst teacher I have had. He didn't show up on the first day of class and yet gave us an in-class graded quiz. He put problems on tests that had no answers and refused to give us points back. Failed to give us the equations we needed and forced us to memorize all of these equations including the whole unit circle. Avoid him like the plague.
Ed has been one of the most difficult professors I have ever experienced. Throughout class I found myself extremely lost. Even after going to office hours I was still lost. The tests are unpredictable. Goes through topics quickly to end class early. Don't waste your time taking his course.
Stay FAR FAR FAR AWAY from this teacher. He is awful. He is useless when it comes to getting help. On discussion posts he will give responses that don't go with what was asked. He puts questions on tests that were not learned during that unit. Like previously mentioned don't take him. Find someone who knows what they are doing. He is really bad.
This professor was awful. Tests are hard and he does not give good feedback.
By far the worst teacher Ive ever encountered. Doesnt really answer questions instead he ask you a question . Additionally, He grades mercilessly. Make sure you read the syllabus and take his words as a grain of salt. Seems like his main objective is to make sure the class is as difficult as possible. Good luck trying to get an A. Take heed
Avoid this teacher if you struggle with math. If good at math you will be fine. I could see other students struggle in discussion boards. Teachers responses very vague. Tests carry too much weight (70% of grade). 2 out of 3 of tests were only available to take Mon-Fri, not ideal for online students who work full time. Study guides not up to date.
If you want a teacher who is willing to help you to pass their class, DON'T even think about this one. I passed only due to the heavy work I did for my homework, participation, and quizzes. Exams are HEAVILY weighted for this class. Not to mention communication isn't the best from him. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
I asked the professor to extend some assignments due to me getting sick with the virus, and he did not extend all assignments which cost me my grade. The exams were not multiple choice at all and the class average for most was 50%-60%
Overall the WORST professor I've ever had. The exams are worth 75% of your grade and there's no extra credit given in this class. He basically excepts you to know the material already and you will end up teaching yourself. When you ask for help he will simply ignore you and doesn't try.
Exams were worth 70% of the whole grade, which made it feel like doing your homework, (which there was a lot of) did not matter. If you got a bad grade on one of your exams, it tanks your grade and it's tough hard to get it back up. On top of this, he went through the topics really fast, which made it hard to understand.
MAT142 Does not get back to your emails. Final review had answer mistakes and he did not correct them. Exams are worth 70% of your grade so it didnt matter if you got 100% on hw and discus. because if you tanked 1 exam you pretty much failed the class. The few review vids he did he went through questions super fast and couldnt understand writing.
Smith was NOT receptive or available for explanations or help during or outside of class time. Grade is based on 3 tests for 70% of total grade. Outside tutor was hired at great expense to help explain the concepts so that the class could be passed. This man should not be "teaching" students anything. Pima should be embarrassed to have him on staff
This class was AWFUL: poor instruction & RIDICULOUS amount of work for a 5-week class among other issues. 78 total assignments including homework & exams. If you're approve for ADR services b prepared to fight for your accommodations. His lectures/explanations were poor, hard to follow, & constantly need correction as well as review/test questions.
The way he teaches this class is by recording videos and just posting reading assignments and derivita quizes. He only had one video that actually worked. The one video was recorded off of a projector onto a cellphone from the desk right below the screen, audio was inaudible. Derivita is crap, ex 2.856 should round to 2.86, but that is wrong.
Ed was really well meaning, and made the best effort to hel his students. However, he is not the best at communicating directions, and I found myself confused most of the time.
Do not take this class if he is teaching
Puts stuff on exams that you didn't even learn and the class is very exam dependent
The exams had things on them that had never been taught and the exams were most of the grade. The lectures didn't really make a lot of sense and he laughs at questions asked. The textbook was the only thing that helped.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Absolutely no way to pass this class solely on this professor's teaching. Only way to pass is to get completely taught the material by another person (family/friend/tutor etc.). He answers in a joking matter and doesn't show any interest in the overall success of his students, half of my class dropped/stopped going.
VERY tough class if you can't teach yourself. He doesn't teach, he'll expect you to know it already. If you can teach yourself material online and pick up things easily, you'll be fine for this class but save yourself the time and take the online class. Exams are basically your whole grade. Devierta is his way of "teaching" AVOID this professor
Very tough grader. Awful awful instructor. He takes FOREVER to grade and will sometimes forget to grade your work so you have to keep reminding him. You need to show all your work and if you miss a step or don't do what he expects you to do but get the answer, right he will mark the question wrong. I regret taking this class.
I just finished the spring semester for this course, (online) if you want someone who doesn't have interest in his students success, take him. He is horrible at responding to emails, for example he sent out a confusing email about the exam and when I sent an email about it, he didn't respond until 2 days later, after I had already taken the exam.
The professor is unresponsive to emails, best way to reach him is by asking questions about the course through the discussions for modules. If questions are personal, like test scores, complications, etc, beware of response times for emails, it took a week and a half to fix my test score. Overall the responses are short and not helpful 90% of times
Smith was basically just a grader for this class. He hardly ever sent out info and had zero lectures. I had to find someone else taking the same class with another teacher in order to receive more information on the topics. If haven't taken calc before and need more than just a text book do NOT take Smith.
This professor does not seem like he has any interest in his students learning. Students in my class reported him ghosting them over emails, and I personally get not get a single clear answer for any question I had for him. He did not follow the syllabus at all and it was overall a terrible class. Do not take ANY class with this professor.
I took his course over the summer and barely passed it. He constantly ignored my emails and refused to help. Professor Smith never gave clear instructions about anything and changed opinions every second. Very though grader. I would never take any class with him and neither should you.
terrible teacher. Would never recommend him to anyone. Doesnt care about anything personal in your life, this class is "too important". take this class with another teacher if possible.
Professor Smith is so bad at communicating with his students. His class is very rigorous and there is an immense amount of homework, but the homework really even mean anything. Exams are worth 70% of your grade. I bombed the first 2 exams but aced the last one and barely got a C in the course. I would advise you to take this class with another prof
I attempted this course over the summer in a half semester class. Tons of homework due tuesday and thursdays. He did not have any lectures that I could find, I had to try to read straight from the textbook to try to teach myself and I couldn't do it. I dropped the class after 4 weeks and bombed the first exam. Worthless.
Please DO NOT chose this professor. He ignores emails and can't even answer simple questions I ask him. The course alone is a tough course and he makes me it even more confusing with all the hidden assignments that were due. I promise you dont waste your time with this guy.
The lack of clarity and instruction make this course extremly annoying. Very few video lectures that only cover small instances and portions of the topic.
How Pima hasn't fired this guy is beyond me.
Really hard and thought professor. Attendance was mandatory online :(
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. STAY AWAY. I read the reviews beforehand and thought that with a little bit of work, I could still manage the class despite him being a bad teacher, but I was wrong. Unclear grading policies, knocks points off for the smallest things, no video lectures, and I sometimes had 6 plus hours of homework.
