Tavss is the best TA in the world- he gives so many examples and problems from old tests to make class a breeze. Definitely try to get him if you can!!
He was my chem recitation professor and he was absolutely great. He takes things so slowly lets u make up quizzes for almost any reason. He also gives you incredible amount of study questions for the exams, which are very helpful. I recommend him for ne1.
Dr Tavss is one of the best recitation teachers ever!! He is sooo amazing and helpful:) Thanks Dr. Tavss
he's the man! seriously, with all the help he gives you, ANYONE should be able to get an A. by far the most involved recitation instructor i've ever had/heard of at Rutgers
I was shocked with amazement how effect a TA can be, deserves to be the teacher.
EXCELLENT! The BEST!

the best TA in the world... should be a professor
Great TA. Take HIM if you can
Greatest teacher ever. That's all there is to say.
Did not even have him for recitation but went to his anyway cause he is amazing. He wants everyone to do so well that he puts so much energy into his teaching and even sends u handouts. If you dont end up getting him just email him and its just like u were part of the class.
Very helpful and wants everyone to pass with everything he has in him. Hes the best
HE IS THE BEST TA THERE EVER IS WAS AND WILL BE
He is the best. No professor can compete with him so far.
Dr. Tavss truly cares about his students!
why dont we kick everybody out of the chem department and make him handle the whole thing. this is the only pro. at rutgers that gives 2 sh*ts about his students. can someone please make him boikess's job???
He is the BEST TA EVER!!! he really wants ALL of his students to do well in his class and when they do not, he is really concerned! He will work with every single person in sections that are not even his so that they get the best possible grades! if you take chem find a student that has him and get his class slides and review sessions they are key!
Dr Tavvs is the best TA ever. He was ready to retire from his career working for colgate when he was offered a TA position. Teaching is his passion and it shows. He will spend endless amounts of time with students to make sure they success in chemistry. He is one of few American TAs I have had.
More helpful than lecture. Loves to see his students do well and always explains topics thoroughly before moving on. Very approachable and sends regular e-mails with extra problems from the text and previous exams. Try to get him if you take this class...if not, go to his class anyway he won't care.
By far the best TA at Rutgers University, in any science department. The best advice I can give to prospective chemistry students is to register for his section, as his sections perform the closest to the recruited honors students. He's the only TA that cares about his students and explains concepts more clearly and simply than any of the lecturer
Best TA Ever!!! One of the BEST Teachers I have ever had, he makes the most complex topics simple and easy to comprehend.
Best TA. Extremely helpful. Very intelligent. Better than lecture. Gives detailed comprehensive notes. Best teacher I've ever had
Dr. Tavss is the greatest professor in the world. I have taken many science classes at Rutgers and have met many professors, but without a doubt he is the best one of them all, and mind you that it was no contest coming up with that statement. He really does everything in his power to help everyone do amazing. He's my HERO! Tavss Rocks!
Truly one of the greatest TA's of all times. He truly cares for his students and wants them to do well. I had him for both chem 161 and 162 and both times he was the reason i passed the class with a descent grade. He only teaches recitation on C/D and only does Wed&Thurs morning and afternoon recitations, so try and register for him. Attendance
WORDS CANT DESCRIBE HOW AWESOME TAVSS IS! RUTGERS IS LUCKY TO HAVE HIM
the best teacher at RU. LOVES TO TEACH. INVENTED COLGATE TOTAL
Tavss is amazing, and he is so helpful. He is full of knowledge and will spill it on to you!
Tavss is by far the best teacher in the chemistry department. He provides extremely helpful notes , not to mention he actually teaches in recitation, rather than just ask "does anyone have any questions?" All of the other recitation teachers are just about useless, as they do no re-teaching at all. Tavss is the way to go. I promise!
Tavss is, hands down, the greatest asset to the chemistry department. Register for his section and you'll get your hands on an INCREDIBLE amount of PRICELESS test questions + explanations. Do the questions and you got yourself an A for an otherwise difficult class. PERIOD
Tavss is the best teacher in the Chem department. I say Siegel should be replaced by Tavss. It is extremely unfortunate that Tavss is retiring after this semester. He is by far my favorite faculty member at Rutgers. He's so helpful and funny. He knows how hard Gen Chem is, and he does everything in his power to help out his students.
As everyone else has stated, Tavss is by far the best asset to the Chemistry department at Rutgers. I've had two semesters with him (gen chem 1 and 2), and he is EXTREMELY helpful and really generates an interest in learning the material. If Siegel was replaced by Tavss, I believe global warming would would legitimately be reversed. =)
Tavss is the best professor know to mankind, rutgers should pay him more for all the work he does.
He is the best Professor for Chem no doubt. He is there for the students and takes time out of his life for the students benefit! Make sure you get him, trust me, Chem will be a lot more enjoyable! I cannot stress how awesome of a teacher Dr.Tavss is!!!!
BEST TA EVER!! I got an A in Chem 1 and 2 because of him (also because I had prior interest in chemistry, but he clarified things that I didn't understand). He really tries to help the students, and he also hates that we have to use****ty calculators for exams. Try your best to get him!! He's the best Rutgers has to offer!!
He is nothing short of perfect. He is the most dedicated, caring person I have come across at Rutgers. He should be head of the chem dept. He takes so much time out of his life...just for his student. TAKE HIM!!
Seriously, I wasn't even in this professor's recitation, but he is THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER. He emailed all of his notes just to help me out. His notes are the best I have ever scene, with examples of almost everything. I wish I had him as my recitation instructor!!!
He invented colgate total. ENOUGH SAID. Great professor, GREAT NOTES will help any student, even ones that are not his own!
He is the epitome of the most helpful, kind, perfect, funny, prepared, and brilliant professor. Very rare esp. in the RU chem dept. An absolute legend at Rutgers among science students... the world is better because of him, seriously. Favorite person at Rutgers... made me see the bigger picture in life, understand chem concepts, and gain confidence
THE BEST PROFESSOR IN CHEMISTRY......ur pretty much guaranteed B, B+ or even A with this guy awesome
Dr. Tavss, you are the greatest teacher I've ever had. I hope you read this because you'll know who I am when I tell you that we appreciate everything that you did for us. All of the long hours, the overtime, the review sessions, the extensive recitation and review notes, everything. You are truly amazing and will be missed. See you around. - L.G.
Chemistry is a difficult course, yet is made easier through Professor Tavss. You will do well if you come to his lectures having read his notes. Do mastering chemistry and the practice problems he sends out and you will do fine on the exam. He is there in office hours and through e-mail whenever you have a question.
Dr.Tavss is the best chemistry professor! To make full use of his lectures, read the notes beforehand. Definitely attend his office hours as he is very helpful. His e-mail correspondence is great. Make sure you don't cheat on mastering chem and keep on top of your lecture/recitation quizzes. If you take it seriously with him, you will succeed.
He is such a great professor. His lectures aren't boring and he is very clear in explaining how to do problems. the best part about having him is that he always send you extra problems and notes through his email. He should run the chem department at RU!!
Chem is a real hard class but his notes and everything made it a lot easier. Of course, if you don't study its not gonna be easier. but he's a real good professor, clear, and hes funny too! Also, he sometimes gives philosophy lessons and advice to his students during lecture. try to get him if you can!
BEST PROFESSOR IN THE WORLD!! End of story.!. lol
He is so cute :) Best professor ever!! He's seriously so helpful if you go to his office hours, he won't let you leave till you fully understand the concept! Made chem so much easier for me. I LOVE YOU DR TAVSS!!!
I'm currently taking chem 162 with him.. he's awesome! He's super helpful when you ask him questions. He dedicates so much time and does everything possible to help his students do well. He sends us so many practice problems and solutions to the homework step by step. I'd say he's the best professor at Rutgers! :)
He is a great professor. I actually got an A in class because of him. He helps his students at any point of time in the day. He is also funny at times and keeps the class lively and entertaining. He is the BEST!!!
Awesome professor! He gets paid for working 3 hours a week, but he puts in over 50 hours a week for his students! He MAKES 50+ pages of extra practice problems that are made up of questions from previous exams for each chapter! He is so dedicated if you do NOT pass chem it has nothing to do with Dr. Tavvs.
Dr.Tavss u are the best. Honestly one of the most dedicated people I've ever met. Ur lectures were great and u made the class fun. And i got an A both semesters cause of this man. I wish u would teach orgo too!! Great teacher!!!!
BY FAR THE MOST AMAZING PROFESSOR AT RUTGERS. MAKE SURE TO DO ALL HIS PACKETS AND STUDY HIS LECTURE NOTES EVERY SINGLE DAY THEY WILL GET YOU THE GRADES YOU WANT IF YOU PUT IN THE EFFOR. TAVSS IS GOD.
I LOVEEEEE HIM!! BEST PROFESSOR IN THE HISTORY OF PROFESSORS! I WISH HE TAUGHT ALL COURSES AT RUTGERS HAHAHA
love him more than life itself
He teaches you the concepts and teaches you all the tricks to make the math easier. He will tell you about his experiences at Colgate which helps put the chemistry we are learning into some perspective. He makes chemistry a BLAST! =) TAKE him!
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is an awesome professor! I really liked his enthusiasm and passion to teach. He taught us helpful tips and tricks to solve difficult problems!
Coming into his class, I've heard through word of mouth and this website that he is amazing. But being in his class he seemed to always repeat the same things lecture to lecture. But do not get me wrong, he sent emails almost everyday clarifying things to help us out and sent the PP through email every night b4 lecture. Very funny and down to earth
Tavss is absolutely the man. The course itself isn't easy, because of Siegel, but he makes it as easy as it could possibly be! His review sheets and practice problems that he sends are LIFE SAVERS! Do those and you're guaranteed a good grade in the course. Like I said though, the course takes effort so don't expect to breeze. Hes the best professor
He is ABSOLUTELY the best teacher you can ask for. Seigal makes chemistry hard but Tavss explains the concepts in such a way that you understand everything. No one can be a better teacher than him. He is really passionate and also super willing to help the students. Teachers can't get better than him =) =)
The best. No doubt. Dr. Tavss explains concepts on a level that anyone can relate to. One of the most prominent examples was the discussion of Hund's rule in which no orbital within the same subshell houses 2 electrons unless each houses at least one. He compared this to people sitting one seat apart from each other on a bus. Excellent analogy !
Professor told us a few times that getting a job as a chemistry teacher at Rutgers was his dream job. He has a passion for teaching chemistry and helping others, and tries to make chemistry as easy as possible. The exams are a little tough, but that's just chemistry itself. Great guy, you won't regret! Oh, great sense of humor too :)
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Don't brag to others about him so you can take him for Chem 162!! He loves what he does and genuinely cares! He wants you to understand which makes you want to learn. You won't regret taking him! The exams are the same for everyone.
OK DR TAVSS is THE Professor to take for any Gen. Chem course if you want to have the best semester of your life. He is clear, funny, helpful and will do anything to help his students do well. He even extends his office hours. He stays after class to explain any concepts that students find difficult. Must TAKE HIM..
Dr.Tavss is THE best professor to take if you really want to learn. He explains everything clearly and if by some chance you don't get it, he'll MAKE sure you get it. He loves teaching and he goes out of his way to make material for his students. He's the best !
Extremely helpful and make sure you understand every single concepts.Dr. Tavss student tend to get higher grades than any other chem students. If you enjoy chem and are interested in paying attention in lecture there is no one better than Tavss. He will teach you the best and most efficient way with adding jokes and humor along the way.
GREAT PROFESSOR!!!
Clear, interesting, and helpful. One of the best professors at Rutgers & he actually wants his students to do good. Great man, oh and "Who's your daddy?"
SIMPLY THE BEST IN THE DEPARTMENT/WORLD! I wish he taught orgo as well. I'll miss him
One of the most genuine, kind, helpful, and happy people I have met I'm my life. He is the best professor rutgers has and will do everything in his power to help you succeed. If he was the head of the department, students would not only do well in chemistry, but they would enjoy it and really learn rather then just cramming. He's the best!
Best Chem professor i’ve ever had!!!
BEST Professor one can ever ask for. His Notes are literally AMAZING.
Tavss is by far the best chemistry professor at Rutgers. The man knows his stuff! He's so dedicated to helping his students get the best grade possible. He seriously puts in 110% effort! And in class he's always making corny jokes to lighten the mood. I love him!!! Oh and he's a real cutie ;)
He's da bomb! A great professor who truly loves his subject matter and his students!
I took his class years ago and I still remember how great his class was! Made a lasting impression! Great guy!
I owe my A in Chem 162 to this man!
I don't think we could have survived chem. 162 without his notes. One of the BEST professors at Rutgers. I wish he was teaching orgo.
Great professor, devotes like 70 hours a week to his five hour a week position. He's funny too, however, he attempts to cover entirely too much extra information and his slides come from his notes and read like a book. If you can deal with him having six slides up at once and each slide having 2000 words on it then take him.
An amazing professor! Very dedicated to making sure his students understand every single concepts. Like he says, you need to practice, practice, practice! His notes are better than any textbook and he's also hilarious and adorable!! :)
Very good Professor Very Difficult Class. Take notes from his presentations more effective than book. Ask questions after class and email him with the easy way to do it from high school chem/suggestions/questions. Very sweet, kind and funny professor. Best chem professor. Knows everything. If you have high school notes keep them/they help!
Dr. Tavss is a great professor! He makes a difficult subject much easier to understand. He is easily one of the best professors in the Rutgers chem department. He's funny, and he really cares about his students :)
Absolutely positively expialidocious. The best chem professor. take him you will not regret it
Dr Tavss is truly the best teacher I ever had. If your ever lucky enough to have him as your teacher, don't miss the chance! He is the most amazing person. Chem is hard but he dedicates himself to helping you understand because he genuinely cares that you do. There should be people like him in the world
Dr. Tavss is amazing. I recommend him over any chemistry teacher. He will work for hours with you until you grasp a concept. He already dedicates hours to his practice problems which basically double as a textbook. I don't guarantee a good grade because chem is ridiculous, but i do guarantee an awesome teacher and experience.
he will do EVERYTHING in his power to help you in WHATEVER way he possibly can. he never stops working to help update his notes or review with you. he gives you ALL the tools you need to succeed, its up to you to utilize them. do his practice problems over and over- leads to a guaranteed A/B. he is so passionate, makes students want to succeed. kp
Tavss really is wonderful but chemistry at RU sucks and there really isn't any way to get around it :( but he did throw up once while his microphone was on so that was cool
Dr. Tavss is an excellent professor. He motivates his students to do well, and encourages them often. His lecture notes are very clear, and he updates them constantly to make them even clearer. Attend his lectures and review sessions; they are extremely helpful. Great professor!
Awesome teacher
Tavss works at a faster pace than the other professors, but personally, I like that he does that. It gives me time before the exam to review everything, instead of learning the material during the lecture prior to the exam! He has a great sense of humor, and will help you when you need it. Just pay attention and go to office hours, they help!!
One of the best professors at Rutgers that actually teaches. He is there to help his students through email, office hours, etc. He sends many emails. Make sure you read them because they are VERY helpful. His notes and practice problems are very detailed. Do his practice problems and you'll be guaranteed to pass chem.
Professor Tavss is hilarious and one of my favorite professors at Rutgers so far. He is always willing to help students no matter what and is a great lecturer. I didnt really go to lectures but he posts lots of examples and helpful practice problems online. Do all those old problems and you're guaranteed an A. I definitely recommend him!
He is the "BEST" professor!
He is the best professor. I'm already a strong science student, but he made me love chemistry even more! If you're having trouble with any concepts, drop by to his office hours or stay back after class and he'll definitely help you!
Phenomenal! He is like a helpful grandpa who really wants his students to succeed. I struggle with Chemistry and didn't do so well on the first exam but after going to Dr. Tavss's lectures he made me fall in love with the subject I hated! I still think the material of General Chem is tough, but Tavss made it so clear that I brought my D to a B.
Professor Tavss made Gen Chem 1 easy. I would have taken him for chem 2 as well, but his sections fill up. He gives a lot of helpful practice problems and doesn't give you extraneous information. Genuinely wants you to do well, and if you pay attention you will.
Tavss is an awesome professor. He puts a lot of time and effort into his lectures study guides. Do ALL the practice exam problems he puts online. The study guides practice exams are very helpful and essential to get a good grade. You can skip the book problems (not helpful) and skim the readings but COMPLETE ALL PRACTICE EXAMS ONLINE!
The best professor in the Chem department at RU! He goes above and beyond for his students and will stop at nothing to help you succeed. The hard thing about Chem 2 is that he doesn't make the exams. Kimmel does, (and they are very tricky). Do all Tavvs practice problems and you should be ready to tackle anything!
Edward J Tavss is perhaps the best chemistry professor in the country... The universe? Maybe... He is funny and he makes sure that his students understand every single concept before he can even think about going to the next slide. Is it worth going to Cook/Douglass three times a day for an hour? Not one bit... However Tavss uses a sign-in sheet.
Dr. Tavss is one of the most inspirational people that I have ever come across. His lectures have helped me develop into the person I am today. After taking this class, however, I feel as though I will never experience the sense of ecstasy and glee that I felt when I heard Edward Jacob Tavss speak. Dr. Tavss has become a lifelong mentor and friend
Professor Tavss is the sweetest professor I've ever met. He knows his stuff and gives practice problems that will help you succeed at Chemistry. He is very approachable and helpful. I highly recommend taking him because he wants you to do well and you will do well with Tavss.
A very special teacher and guy. As millions already know, he is the best prof at Rutgers because he will make it his mission that you succeed. All other Chem teachers are surly chuds. Dr. T is a mench. Other teachers are egomaniacs, Dr. T has a vox populi. Other teachers are dour, Dr. T will bust you up like the 3 stooges. Go to class and laugh
not sure why Professor Tavvs gets great reviews for his lectures. He is a very sweet guy but his lectures were not for me. If you see on his syllabus, his notes are very in depth with a lot of problems that are not necessary (70+ pages). Tavss does put in a lot of effort and do his practice probs! I Prefer Guerra or Kimmel.
Great professor! The class itself is difficult but he provides you with a lot of extra materials that other professors dont. Very sweet guy and tries to crack a joke every once in a while.
Dr. Tavss has a special place in my heart. He loves chemistry as much as he loves teaching, and will go the extra mile for his students. To do well, read the textbook, his notes, and complete all of his problem packets. Do attend his office hours as well; he is very insightful and has more time to break down the material further.
Dr. Tavvs is a small glistening sliver of hope in this scarlet hell that is Rutgers University. 1 in 1000 teachers gives a crap in this school and Dr. Tavvs is that one teacher. It is with great respect that I write this review. But if he doesnt fit in his schedule you could still attend his lectures / become his friend.
Mr Tavss is the best grandpa!!!! The best teacher ever .
Dr. Tavss is a Rutgers legend. He is retired but you can find ALL the students in gen chem1 and 2 using his notes to this DAY! in his notes, he explains things so clearly and will step by step solve problems to help students build the ability to solve more challenging problems on their own. He is the only reason I learned any chemistry at all!
