He's a hard teacher but he knows what he is doing and I would take him again anyday. Just follow directions and try.
I do not reccommend this teacher at all, he is a hard grader and doesnt have the most friendly personality. His class was hard and boring, and we were required to write 3 papers a week!(not kidding). Dont take unless you LOVE Shakespeare, and being overworked.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
great!
Seems unfriendly but is very willing to help and really appreciates those who try their best. Watches cool movies in class and is willing to overlook a few extra absences. If you try you will pass.

Hes a really good teacher but is strict on his rules. Hes very willing to help you if you help yourself.
He is not helpful, grades harshly, teaches at an advanced level, and acts superior to the students. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Do Not take!!!!! I repeat do not take!!!!!
Excellent teacher!! I will admit he is very tough, but is worth all the work. I learned more in this class, than any english class I have ever taken. I will take what he taught me through out my life. As long as you follow his instructions and ask for help, you will do great.

i would suggest NOT taking this man. he is rude... and obsessed with shakespeare- might i add!!! if you have a problem.. opps too bad. whats done is done in his eyes... ugh!
This guy is hilarious... but not intentionally. He really is a huge fan of Shakespeare (but why shouldn't he be?) Be prepared for lots of reading/paper-writing. Just ask him about Elvis and he'll stop talking about Shakespeare for a while (he's obsessed with both)
Very good teacher straight to the point!
You have to go to class to pass and he is very hard. I never understood the prompts for writing his 2000 plus word essays but somehow managed a B - probably from the high daily grade. Avoid him if you can.
At the beginning of the semester the class was full by the last day there were only 6 students! I used to like english and always did well on my papers until this man came into the picture! Do NOT EVEN SIGN UP FOR THIS TEACHER!! I tried to drop on the first day but they wouldn't let me because I was a freshman taking a freshman level class!!
pretty good
I had this man for short story, I must say some of the BOOKS we read were interesting. He is pretty hard on his paper grading and sometimes its hard to understand exactly what he wants but, if you go to class everyday and read a C is not hard, somehow I managed a B.
Class is mandatory. There is a paper due every class. He does not help you understand hoe to improve your work, he just sends you to read the useless text book to learn the format of the papers. Don't even think about getting sick and bringing a doctor's note, it's no use. This man was a waste of a semester.
Boring but extremely easy!!
If you take this man you are CRAZY. Good luck at having any sort of life at all. there are papers due every class and when you ask for help he makes you feel like an idiot. He grade EXTREMELY hard. Do yourself a favor and choose a different professor :)
Are you all joking? Yes, his class is hard but it's college you idiots!!!! College is not supposed to be a breeze. If you actually are mature enough to enjoy being challenged, take Tober. I did my work every day, attended class every day and what do you know, I got an A.
I must admit, class is sometimes boring, but overall it was a great class. I learned alot in his class. If you go to class, do the homework and pretend that you care, you will be fine. He is very willing to help you if you just ask.
This class i took we read alot of books but he was so interesting b/c he would get so into what he was talking about. He is boring but he was easy as long as you did the reading and study guides. Never had a test just two major papers which wasn't to bad.
This class was so incredibly boring. You don't learn a thing, and he has no interest in helping you. I tryed meeting with him several times when I didn't understand the assignments and he did everything in his power to avoid helping. Attendance is a must.
I understand perfectly the low ratings for Mr.Tober. You people are lazy!If you are expecting an easy A from the Tarleton English Department, you'd better get a grip.I learned alot from his class. He made it easy and to the point and was more than willing to help you if you were making a genuine effort. A's are not free!!!
He knows his stuff. It's not the easiest class but if you actually put forth effort then you will be fine.
I really enjoyed his views on the literature. It's pretty clear that he has his own thoughts about the literature and has already linked them together, but he makes it easy so that you can see the connections also. He will help you if you need help, just don't ask stupid questions. Try to understand the stories and you will pass. Grades pretty easy
Worst class ever! Do not take him!
I took ENGL220 online, and I have to say it was moderately difficult. However, I expect such from college. I am not a fan of English literature at all, so some of the assignments were a little difficult for me. However, I tried my best (even though sometimes I felt like a joke), and I received As and Bs. Do your best and you'll be fine.
Tough class. Absolutely no give. If assignments are late you get a zero. If you send email sometimes you will get a response and sometimes not. Weird reading unless you like the choices. So many better options.
Cannot speak for classroom style but DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR AN ONLINE CLASS. Grades come in VERY SLOWLY making it difficult to learn from your mistakes and improve the next assignment. The material is interesting but regardless of class description you WILL study Brit Lit only.If you are an online student HE WILL NOT ALLOW YOU AN APPT TO SEE HIM.
Uses large words that are not necessarily needed. If you do not complete the homework, it is a fail. If on some of the things that you do, if it's not verbatim of what he said it's wrong and gives you an 'F' on it.
Took class online and did all the daily assignments and followed instructions for the papers. Asked for help on the first paper and Professor Tober replied very fast and it helped a lot. The readings were pretty interesting and I made an A so I would recommend him.
I don't understand why some people complain about this guy. There are lots of what he calls daily assignments that have to be on time but they aren't hard. There are no tests just papers. He gives lots of instructions and he gives as much extra help as you ask for. I wanted to take another class with Tober but there weren't any more online.
He is a wonderful professor. He is a little hard to understand, but if you show up and listen the class can be extremly easy. You don't need a text book and there are no tests/ quizes only 2 papers and the frist one he helps you with and basically gives it to you. If you have questions email him that is the best way to understand him if you dont.
He was so awesome! HE was a bit on the boring side but as long as you went to class and put what he required in each paper, youll easy make an A. Need to go to every class though to know what exactly he wants.
His online class is the worst class I've ever took. His assignments are ridiculous and he takes points off for anything possible. His 3 essays that he assigns are all over the place and extremely hard to compose. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It lowered my GPA tremendously. Horrible professor.
I love ED! He is very spirited about his teachings, which made the class very interesting. I would retake this class if I had the choice because I love him so much. He is a great man and teacher. Yes, sometimes the assignments were boring, but he is very helpful and will practically write it for you if you take the time to ask him. He enjoys people
Great teacher, very clear on what he wanted/expected.
He was easy to talk to and he was willing to help anyway possible. He would sit down and help me through everything.
In his class we had days were he dedicated class to helping us write our papers.
I really enjoyed his class. By giving me helpful feedback I was able to better my writing abilities and literature knowledge. The material was very interesting and he was also very quick to respond emails that I would send him.
Your input on assignments was very helpful which is something lacking in many instructors I think. Overall the course was enjoyable and the major papers were challenging but not impossible, probably the perfect degree of difficulty.
i enjoyed that he made sure we understood each step in the writing process. It truly was an introduction to college composition. He walked us through, step by step, when writing our papers. He didn't just throw us into the deep end, only for us to come up short.
He was very helpful when ever we needed it.
Went to class and turned in all of the assignments but one. A pretty easy A since he helped me with the papers when I asked.
I was kinda worried when i saw the readings but they turned out to be pretty interesting since i like history and he knows a lot about politics and religion in England. Blackboard assignments were pretty easy but they had to be on time. You have to attend most of the class meetings but I made an A so it was worth it.
I failed this course the first time but made a B with Tober. Its confusing at first but he helped me with the papers and I did better on each one. Tober's the best!
His class is extremely boring but it is an easy A. He has lots of online assignments but as long as you do them he will give you full credit.
I really liked his teaching style. it wasnt too stuffy and boring for a lituratyre class. he was funny and the class wasnt too hard. he gave good feedback and i would definatly recommend taking this class with this professor.
At first the literature is kinda hard to read but the outlines help a lot and you get full credit for doing them, instead of taking quizzes. My daily grade was 105. He shows you exactly how to do the papers and will help more if you ask so its not too hard to make an A if you want to. He knows a lot about the history of the literature too.
Professor Tober was an excellent teacher. He always answered all questions I had on any paper that we were writing. All papers were practically written in class together, so the class was well prepared.
If you really like history, this is the guy for you. All of our essays were based on the Salem Witch Trials. To me, it seemed like he basically did the essay for you. The essay topics were quite difficult as the semester progressed, but if you listen to what he wants you will not get anything under a C.
Papers were all over the same topic just different main points. You don't want to miss class at all.. He pretty much writes the papers for you, but continues to say that we wrote it together (which wasn't the case).
This is the guy you really should take for the writing class. He explains everything about the papers and the grading really well and repeats a lot to make sure you understand. He will also give you extra help if you go by his office. At first I thought I might not pass, but I ended up with an A. I wouldn't say it was easy, but I learned a lot.
Had Tober for a 1301 class and it was great. Took him again for this literature class and it was even better. He makes the literature interesting with lots of history. Some of the reading was tough but instead of quizzes you fill out a reading preview as you read and turn it in online so my daily grade was 100. He helps a lot with the papers too.
Great teacher. Pay attention and do everything he tells you to do and you'll pass easily with an A.
Tober is excellent. We read "the black cat" by Edgar Allan Poe and wrote many of our papers over this. YOU DO THE PAPERS IN CLASS. (mostly he does it) easy as long as you give him something to work with.
Great short story class! We read stories about the Civil War by a guy who fought in lots of the battles. The stories were interesting and I learned a LOT about the Civil War too. Papers were not hard if you follow the instructions Professor Tober gives.
He is a great professor.
I took him for Intro to Lit and I wouldn't recommend taking him unless you can easily understand old English writing. Also, I struggled with his essays and I'm and English major. He's tough but if you're willing to work he isn't too bad! There isn't a lot of homework but the essays are half your overall grade.
Just finished a summer class about civil war stories and Mr Tober made it really interesting. Im not a great writer but I made an A since my daily grade was over 100.
He's the best teacher I have had in four semesters at Tarleton!
He is a great guy and willing to work with you if come to class. He only has 4 essay (take the best 3) and daily assignments. So be sure to come to class and have your daily assignments done before class and you'll make an A
Probably the worst teacher i've ever taken. He talks the whole class about stuff y'all talked about last class. Attendance is basically a participation grade. He gives easy work but grades papers hard. I wouldn't recommend him.
I loved his class! Though it was a bit hard to follow his lectures, he was always very helpful, especially when it came to essays. He basically gives you the entire essay. Would definitely take his class again!
Great professor! I took him for literature and fell in love with his class. I ended up with a 102 in his class.
Does not seem to care for the success of students, refused to explain things to me in his office and hurried me out each time. Did not ever want to explain things more than once, yet is hard to listen to during lecture. Got mad at a student once for leaving to piss... he is that kind of professor.
He isn't the worst professor I have ever had, but he is extremely difficult. He pays no attention to the class because he gets consumed in what he's saying and doesn't stop to see if anyone needs help or understands the material. I am literally writing this negative review during his class while not hiding it and he has not even noticed.
One of the hardest professors I've had. Doesn't explain well in class, & if you go to his office to ask anything, he doesn't like to repeat himself. His daily papers aren't hard, but he's a tough grader. Also his handwriting is very hard to read, in my opinion. Doesn't like it when you're gone from class, even if you have a note. I don't recommend.
He is incredibly difficult and a confusing professor. All he does in class is hand out way too many papers and then he continues to ramble on about whatever is being discussed. Half the time I have no idea what he is talking about. He is also beyond awful at explaining what needs to be done on assignments. Do not take his class he never makes sense

great professor
Missed class a few times, and wasn't able to meet with him until late and by the time I did get to meet with him he told me there was no way that I could even pass the course with a D and told me to just drop the course. He isn't student focused and just rambles on in the class. Not a good professor when working with campus based activities.
I've never posted on this site, but a friend told me some bad comments were made about Mr Tober so let me tell you he is the best professor I have had so far. I went to class and did all the assignments the way he showed and made an A. I have used what he taught me to write papers in other classes and made mostly A's on those too. Great teacher!
Professor Tober is a piece of work, but if you go to class and do your part; he works with you. he assigns A LOT of outside readings and A LOT of papers, but as long as you follow the rubric he gives, you'll get an A on every paper. I got an A in the class, but it definitely was not handed to me
Tober can be a nice guy, but he talks so slow I was asleep half the time(kidding). He loves what he does and you can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching but he rambles a lot and is just boring. Papers can kinda get confusing, but GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!!! You are more likely to get a better grade if you ask for help!
Talks ALOT!!!! Very boring!!!!! You have to do a bunch of work that isn't really hard, but is time consuming. Your daily grade is 40% of your total grade, so you have to go to class and turn in all your homework. A lot of homework, but easy class overall just REALLY boring. He basically gives you the final, you just memorize it. I made a 104.
Professor Tober is a really good teacher. I did all the daily assignments so I had a daily grade over 100 and I made good grades on the big assignments. I made an A in the class and learned a lot about the Reformation in England which was really interesting since I'm a history major.
Professor Tober is an alright professor overall, except his lectures become really hard to pay attention to. We read Civil War stories and instead of focusing mainly on the actual stories, he focuses more on the actual battles and what happened in them. Seems more like a history class than an English class.
If you don't go to class you will fail. If you don't complete your assignments you will fail. If you blow off hid class you will fail. Its hard, know what you're getting yourself into...
He talks the entire class period and get boring, don't miss a class or you'll be behind a lot! Good dude but makes the class 50x harder.
Prepare to take notes and write and rewrite. There are assigned readings, read them and take notes. Do everything you are told to do and you will pass. He is available outside of class and he is helpful.
This guy talks the entire time and you dont ever truly realize what he is actually talking about, the way he explains things makes it all sound so confusing, honestly sounds like a history class the majority of the time.
Professor Tober is a decent man, but his teaching style is not my favorite. He rants a lot and it is difficult to keep up with the points in his messages. He gives quite a bit of homework, but it is not hard work. He expects you to be in class every single time, no matter what your excuse is for missing--he does not care.
Professor Tober is had to understand what he wants. Nobody in my class and I knew what we were supposed to do at all. Do not procrastinate for sure.
this is not an English class this is a history class. you will write 1 paper the whole semester that you have no idea what it is supposed to be about. there are so many mini assignments that could be spread out but is crammed together. he makes everything so confusing and boring.
Tober is a pretty good teacher and this class is really easy. His lectures are really long and theres a lot of reading but its pretty easy and you can do the readings during class. Theres two essays and one final essay but you can opt out of the final. This class is extremely easy to get an A in so if you dont youre just doing something wrong.
Each class took years off my life. I really tried to pay attention during the lecture but it was just too boring. Completely inflexible on attendance and grades. get ready to leave every class more confused than you came in. Big biceps though.
Sis, I tried. That is all I'm going to say. Good luck. YOU WILL NEED IT.
After Spring Break the class was all online and Professor Tober was really helpful with detailed assignments and what he called templates to explain how to make the assignment better. When I had a question he emailed me back really fast with the answer. I signed up to take another class with him in the fall.
I don't know why anyone would say Mr Tobers class is awful. I thought it was pretty easy to understand and he really cared abour us students. The Edgar Alan Poe story was interesrung roo. And I made a A.
Mr. Tober is a very good teacher. I was worried at the beginning of the semester but he gives lots of good handouts to show you what to do. The Black Cat was a really interesting story, kinda creepy and kinda fun and Mr. Tober was really into it and the history too. I hope my next English class is as good as his.
Me and my roommate were in Mr Tober's class and we learned a lot about writing and made good grades. If you don't understand something just ask and he will help. He's the best teacher I had this semester.
I really loved the class. I learned so much not only on how to structure my papers but also the history of each story we read. Tober loves what he does and is very knowledgable. There is a lot of handouts and reading but it is doable.
10/10 do not recommend this class or this professor.
Professor Tober is an excellent teacher. He is excited about the material & discussing the reading material. The honest answer is if you want to pass his class, participate in the discussions. They will help you write better papers, & understand the literature better.
sweet professor who grades on your effort
Good professor, would take again.
if you dont write exactly how he wants it good luck passing. He grades hard and wont give you an actual grade until the last week of classes. Hes nice but takes the whole hr. and 30 min to explain one thing and half the time it doesnt make sense. He also doesnt give good rubrics or assignment directions. Very little details
He is a very good professor who is willing to help his students out. Some of his lectures are a little confusing when explaining a paper but he opens the floor up for questions, students only confuse themselves for shyness of not asking questions SO ASK IF YOURE CONFUSED!! Other than that his class is fairly easy just do the work and you be fine.
Honestly at the beginning it was not too hard but as the semester progressed nothing made sense. He forgets to tell you certain things points will be taken off for and grades super strict. You can't get in contact with him unless its over email no face to face meetings and over email he's still not much help.
He seems like an amazing person but grading wise hes really tough and doesnt seem to care his students are failing. Theres only three grades used for the semester and theyre all important essays. Good luck.
Although I will say that at times his lectures got confusing and it seemed like he kept going in circles, he was a really good professor. If you pay attention to the detailed instructions, you will do fine. We had two major writing assignments due and a lot of homework, but if you do the homework well and pay attention to feedback, you will be fine
