Hard teacher but damn entertaining!

Talks Too Fast, Doesn't Teach Good
If anyone fails his class, they'd better switch majors. He's by far the best.
Awesome prof. The only good prof in the entire math department.
Fair teacher. Mainly teaches by doing examples. Tests are not too bad, they are taken straight from the homework. Just make sure you study!
He the only reason why I passed Calc 2
Great professor, best in OU's math department. Teaches very well, but not to difficult, and is a lot of fun.
never failed a math class before, but I can't even follow the logic as this guy does problems on the chalkboard
His tests reflect his past tests in the ASC. He was always available in his office for students' questions. He taught me much more then math. I am becoming a math teacher, and I hope to incorporate what he does in the classroom into mine.
he is very funny and entertaining. he was always willing to help and answer questions. unfortunately sometimes he was a bit unclear on explaining even tho he tried hard. he was a bit hard to understand at times.
Tests reflect the review that he does the day before. Great teacher
Best Prof I have ever had. He actually makes math class fun without being too easy on you. If you have to take Calc II, there is no better professor.
somehow i passed the class, but i don't know how. i was always confused IN class...he talks to fast, but is actually pretty funny. anyway, i was usually confused but i just studied what he wrote on the board, and that was always on the test.
Cheng is the man...
I love bonus check marks!!!
This is the best math professor at Oakland that I have taken. He will keep you interested in class but sometimes he'll bore you. But he explains things to were you will understand them. And if you have any problems, he'll help you out. I'll recommend him!
cheng is da man
oh, Eddie Cheng! haha he's hilerious. Love the bonus check marks. He explains things very well...he's a bit hard to understand at times but he makes sure you understand what you are doing. His tests are straight from the lectures. He helps you out with extra points on tests. definately recommend hi
Great professor. Very fast at returning emails. Class is fun, but you learn alot too
Cheng is the man! Can get confusing, but the end of the semester gets easier. He gives extra credit on tests for no reason and is very entertaining. Hint: Get bonus check marks it can raise your grade by .2 if you get a lot of them.
This class is very different than any other math classes taken. You have to pay very close attention to what he says, and think really hard about how it applies to whats given on a test. Some cheap moves on the tests and homework assignments, but does help when you seek it out. A great professor....
He was a good instructor. He was funny also. He kept us interested in his class...
You have to work hard in this class, but he is fairly thorough in terms of lecture material. Almost all of the tested material has been covered on the homework projects and pretest assignments. He is very willing to help if you ask, and is very prompt about returning e-mail. I recommend.
Cheng is an excellent professor because he does not run his students though the tedious theories and proofs of why a formula works the way it does. He simply provides straight-forward examples and reiterates the processes throughout the semester...BEST math teacher I've ever had!!!!!!!!!!
What a wonderful math teacher. I don't think he could have been more straight forward with what the tests would cover or how to prepare for them. He definitely knows his stuff and is very good at teaching it. Also, he's a funny guy.
Excellent teacher and a genuine individual. He's such a change from the ordinary bitter, don't-care attitude of most teachers. One of the better teachers I have ever had.
Bonus check marks rock! Explains things well and in multiple ways, recommend him for any course he is teaching and you might be looking to take
This is a very difficult class, and some of the test questions will make your head spin. It requires a lot of effort on your part. All math classes after this one get much harder--be prepared. Cheng is a funny person and teaches fairly well. He offers alot of help outside of class, something unusual for math professors.
he is funny, gives ya opportunites for extra credit and such, very cool
This professor is one of the math professors that actually makes you learn at oakland. He gives many examples of every possible situation. If you talk to him over the semester he won't fail you as long as he knows you are trying and will give you hints about test questions if you visit him often in his office for help. I suggest taking him.
eddie's an insparation
Professor was excellent. I was in his class for both Math 372 and APM 405, and both were great. Good sense of humor, friendly, good explanations, always willing to help, fair grading.
bad bad bad, stay away if you can. He doesn't know anything about CSE His lectures are confusing and exams are more confusing.Oakland gave him this class to teach because they are short in staff. His major is math not CSE. If you care about your GBA don't take him.
Took this prof for two classes. I found his hard to understand, unorganized (my notes were all over the place trying to keep up) and he played favorites. He gave grad students the hardest problems in the book, and his tests were awful. I do not recommend him at all.
First Math class I ever failed. He is very funny and smart, but his the 2nd test and the final are extremely difficult. You have to be very clever to pass these tests. Final is 40% of grade. This screwed me!
Attendance is not mandatory but it just as well may be for a course like this. He does offer at least 4 hand in assignments. He allows you to use any source and work together in groups up to 5. These are still tough, but doable. He really wants people to "get" it. Prof. Cheng talks a bit fast and does not write the clearest, I'd rec. a recorder.
Very nice, not the easiest to follow. Writes as fast as he talks which is unusual so it can be hard to process what he is saying and copy the notes. He will happily answer your questions though so speak up if you don't understand something. There were 5 total hand in assignments, 4 were mandatory, the last could replace the lowest grade.
So far the best professor I've taken at OU. He saved our class after our original prof. literally abandoned us. Did everything he could to make sure we didn't suffer from the messy situation. One of the few OU math profs that actually cares if his students understand.
He is a very friendly and helpful teacher. He does not make you feel too stressed. His classes are a break from the normal awfulness of the OU math department. I highly recommend him for any class, especially the higher levels.
Had hom for number theory. He made it so confusing. He would get confused, then figure it out and move on. I was a notetaker for another student and I couldn't even take good notes because he was so messy and confusing. To me, he was condescending when you'd ask questions. Actually told me to quit the program. I'm now a math professor.
Eddie is a complete boss. Best math prof I've ever had. He's a funny guy too. Course material wasn't even hard (calc 2) I got 100% on the first exam... he takes all of his exam questions from hw problems and in-class examples. Overall great time.
He is very understanding that the class was hard. He helps your grade.
Great teacher, easy to ask questions to and seems like he legitimately cares if his students understand the material. Slightly cold personality, but he did manage to learn everyones name (all... 12 of us). Expectations were more than reasonable, and there was a decent linear shift on final grades
Eddie is my hero. He is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. He teaches the material in an enthusiastic manner and he actually cares about us learning the material. I understands that it is a difficult class and ensures that we fully understand. Plus, he's hilarious and has the greatest wardrobe selection I've seen out of any teacher.
Got a 3.7 - He's funny & dumbs down the material. On exams questions are very tricky but most are from the section examples or given on HW (he will tell you this). On all exams he gives you 5 pgs with trig & calc 1 identities. Gives extra credit up to .4 added to final grade. Curves & dropped lowest exam grade if students did well on next exams.
Take this guy! He makes proofs understandable and doable. Do the homework, cause that's the only way to get good at proofs. He wants everybody to get a good grade. He curves exams. Put in effort and you'll get above a 3.0. He's been my funnest math teacher and is by far one of the best at OU. Plus he brings cookies on exam days...
Helpful, more than fair, and funny, he made math seem much easier than it is, and was willing to ensure that every student did well. Undoubtedly the best math professor I have had at Oakland. His extra credit is a large amount, and his grading is very fair accordingly.
Makes calc 2 easy
Actually enjoyed going to class. He's a funny guy. Almost all of the questions on the exams are from homework and lectures, so if you just go to class and do the homework you will do well.
I am not a big fan of math - but Eddie made the class very fun and engaging. Test questions is STRAIGHT from the homework / notes. I took this class during an accelerated summer semester and passed with decent marks on my first attempt. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR - HE IS AWESOME.
Very good professor that actually cares about his students. Explains very well and can answer questions. Gives plenty of opportunities to bring up your grade and uses humor to keep your attention. I recommend him to everyone I talk to!
He's a great teacher that takes the time to make sure people understand what he's teaching. If you do bad on one test, he'll make future better tests worth more to help your grade. Lectures aren't mandatory, but it's much more helpful than relying only on the book. Also very funny and clearly knows the material he's teaching. I would recommend him.
Eddie was not a bad professor by any means. He is a fair grader, and does try to help students out on their exams. My only complaint is that he tends to speed through the material, and leaves students behind occasionally. I recommend attending every class, as he doesn't teach straight from the book and makes it hard to catch up!
Honestly, I was disappointed in his teaching after seeing all of the reviews on this page.It seemed like he expected you to know all of the definitions and material before class making his lectures hard to understand and follow. He is very quick to e-mail back but he often misunderstands questions in e-mail or doesn't answer your question concisely
Professor Cheng is an awesome guy! If you get the chance, definitely take him! This class could have been horribly boring but he made it more interesting that other teachers would have. He's a VERY fair grader and gives out bonus participation points. Tests are straight off the reviews, except make sure you study all the proofs from class.
I have taken 5 different professor at OU and Cheng is the best thus far. Highly recommended.
Best teacher I have had at Oak. Calc 2 is a very hard class and I failed with Spagnuolo and retook with Eddie. He is a much better teacher and cares about the students understanding and passing. You have to work hard because it is calc 2 but he gives you your best chance of passing at OU.
His class is fun
Eddie Cheng is the MAN. He is hilarious and makes the class lighter. He goes through proofs really fast, but you can ask him questions and he will re-explain it. He gives you problems that will be on the tests in the lectures, so GO TO CLASS. I studied outside of class maybe 10 hours total for the whole semester and got a 3.3.
If you skip class you will fail. There is no online posting of notes. What you are able to write down in the class is ALL you have to study. I hated discrete math but I still managed to get a 4.0 on the tests by cramming the night before them. If I didn't take good notes and attend every lecture I would have failed the class.
Lectures are long, as usual in math. Ask questions! He usually explains okay, but you might not get it the first time. He is very helpful in and out of class. Pass the final you pass the class. You HAVE to attend class though, as he looks at your effort, notes aren't posted, and he also explains what you need to know for the tests in detail.
I've experienced Eddie Cheng's mathematical wizardry 3 times now, and each time has been more magical than the previous. Also, I ran into him at the mall once, so that was neat. Take his classes.
He is very helpful and knowledgeable. He explains things well. And not to mention he's hilarious and he makes the class more interesting. I wish I had him for calc one.
One of my favorite math professors at OU. Very easy to follow despite the topics not being simple, and always willing to clarify if you ask questions. You NEED to attend lectures. I never even bought the book. Every test and quiz is based on things he does in lectures. He gives sample exams which are VERY similar to the real exams.
Eddie is the best professor you can have for this class. If you skip lecture you probably won't pass because the test questions are from his lectures. Probably the best professor I have ever had.
Taking Eddie's class was a cathartic experience, and has inspired me to better myself and the world around me. Or something like that. Either way, Eddie is a great professor. His classes aren't necessarily easy, but he's easygoing and always willing to provide guidance.
He's the bomb from his lecture style to his floral shirts and neon shoes. He tells you everything that will be on the test during the lectures- so don't miss. He does not care about attendance but uses "bonus checkmarks" to see who's coming to class. The checkmarks are later used for curving the class. AGAIN: DO NOT MISS CLASS.
He was a great professor. Hes able to understand and knows what hes teaching and can make the lectures fun. Hes a funny guy and integrates that into some of his lectures as well. If you don't know whats going on in a class meet with him in his office hours, they will help. He does teach math so his classes are difficult so man up and do the work!
One of my favorite professors at Oakland. Took him for both MTH 275 and APM 263. Make sure you go to all of his lectures as they are VERY IMPORTANT if you want to pass. He'll drop hints at random as to what questions in specific he'll put on the tests. Also make sure you go to the review before the tests, as they are super helpful.
Eddie is the man. Take him no matter what. You will pass.
Besides his subpar handwriting and slightly unorganized notes, I really loved having Professor Cheng. Would definitely take him again.
He basically tells you what is on each exam. Extremely easy but you won't learn anything. You never have to open the textbook, just memorize your notes. I got a 4.0 by memorizing proofs. That sounds nice but it's a waste of time. If you care about learning and being a good mathematician, his classes won't promote that. I feel a bit cheated.
Cool guy, goes really fast tho so be ready for that.
Eddie Cheng saved my gpa. I took this class in the fall of 2016 and failed with a 0.0 Took it again with Cheng and got a 3.0 This man is a modern day hero. You know what they say, not all heroes wear capes. Well this hero wears Louis Vuitton belts and floral shirts with some fresh Nike's. Also, go to office hours. You get free stuff from him
Oakland's math department is quite possibly the worst in the state, but Eddie Cheng is the probably the only professor there that genuinely cares about his students and has the skills to help them learn. I'd take him in for every math class if I could,.
Eddie Cheng is a great professor and makes all the lectures fun to go to. He gives bonus check marks which help out at the end of the year and tells you exactly what you need to know for tests because he wants you to pass. He's hilarious and makes you want to pay attention. I highly recommend this professor.
Funny professor who teaches a very hard subject with ease. His lectures are interesting but he moves fast so take notes. Get the book. Grades only from tests which are hard but he will curve. Gives you every chance to succeed. If you need help GO to his office hours it really helps. He is BY FAR the best professor to take for this difficult course.
Eddie Cheng is the best professor I have had at Oakland so far. He gives students every chance to pass the class, and gives bonus checkmarks in class for participation (which makes lectures extremely fun). If you don't take Eddie Cheng, you're missing out on a wonderful instructor. Discrete Math is challenging but his lectures are well thought out.
Probably one of my favorite professors ever. It's amazing witnessing his lectures - you can clearly see his passion for the subject. Discrete Math is a hard class but he makes it easy with his clear lectures and formulaic tests. Seriously. He tells you what problems will be on the test in some form or another. Inspirational.
Eddie is one of the best professors I have had. There are countless things he does that show he has put a lot of thought into teaching. He can also explain anything in at least 3 different ways. I have had him twice now and would take him again if given the opportunity.
Oh what can I say, Mr. Cheng is a trouble maker. He knows his subject, will make you work for it but does not make it complicated. It's mostly about memorization, so if you practice well you will be fine.
AMAZING! He is one of the funniest teachers I have ever had. He is great at explaining the materials and he is a wonderful teacher.
He was a nice guy and is willing to work with you and wants you to succeed. I personally struggled with his teaching style. He had us do a lot of examples in class, but I prefer a more solid outline of notes to be given. He does offer office hours, emails, etc. And is willing to help!
I have never witnessed better lectures; he has the ability to make the most difficult material make sense. He keeps lectures upbeat and interesting with his humor. He is very accessible outside of class too. Participate! He doesn't make you feel bad for not understanding something and you will only learn.
Really funny guy, keeps class interesting but if math isn't your thing then you will not enjoy this class. The quizzes and tests were not easy and he did not curve. He gave bonus check marks throughout the semester but I did not see them in my final grade so I don't know how those helped.
Professor Cheng is an amazing person. He made a class that I failed at another institution bearable, while also doing everything in his power to help us students. He is one of the good ones. He regularly will go out of his way to help his students succeed, even personally explaining concepts to you at 8 PM. Future students, DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS!!!
This professor truly makes learning fun and is one of the best math profs. He is very knowledgable and works with the class to ensure that we are following along and understanding. He makes class fun and will let you know what type of problems he may include in exams so that you can study appropriately. I would 100% take him again.
Take this class with this professor if you have the chance, he explains and does many exercises and examples comparable to the exam. I really feel I didn't waste my time taking this class. A balanced professor from whom I learned a lot.
Definitely not an easy class, but he is a good professor. Pay attention to all lectures or you will fall behind. Grade is based on 2 quizzes, 2 exams, and a final. Bonus points given for participation. Gives many chances to redeem yourself and your grade. Gives homework problems, not mandatory nor graded, but impossible to do well without practice
GREAT human and GREAT professor. He is a math wizard and a comedian. He made Discrete Math, a very hard class, enjoyable. I wish I had the opportunity to meet him in person. Take this professor, he literally tells you what will be on the exam. He even went out of his way to congratulate me on my grade. May take him for Linear Algebra. I RECOMMEND
The subject was brutal for me, but fortunately, Prof Cheng wasn't the reason it was difficult. He is incredibly passionate about teaching and the subject and will always be willing to answer questions. He is incredibly strict during quizzes and exams (at least online), but that easily dismissed. He keeps lectures engaging which was helps you focus.
This class was the most difficult I have taken but certainly not because of Eddie. The material is super hard and he goes over it fast but bc there is so much to cover. Very funny and helps students until they understand. Answers Qs thoroughly. Final exam featured material students performed better on. Almost no HW, its on you to practice yourself
Dr. Cheng is amazing! I appreciate his way of lecturing by doing a ton of examples and book work together. He really wants you to understand the material, so speak up if you are struggling. He does a good job preparing students for tests/quizzes & even specifically mentions questions that will be on assessments. Study the lecture notes!! :)
Overall a fine class. Lectures were for 2 hours and very fast pace. Only things graded were two exams, two quizzes and a final. If you're not a good test taker fine a different class because tests are graded strict. Has a heavy accent and can be hard to understand.
Great professor for online classes, he somehow managed to make lectures about mathematical proofs interesting. Highly recommended for APM 2663. Its a tough class but he really cares about the students and wants them to pass.
Professor Cheng was very passive aggressive when students would do bad on tests. Myself and many other students found it hard to do well on tests, and he would then send out an email telling us that we were the problem and not him. If you don't study every lecture video covered on the test you won't pass. He has a heavy accent and goes very quickly
Professor Cheng is a pretty nice guy. Discrete Math is a rough subject, and I had a hard time with it. Eddies teaching style was certainly not my favorite, but when I approached him for help, he was there. If you take Eddie, youre going to struggle at least a little bit, but ask for help and it WILL be there.
Very harsh grader if you do not have the exact way he does it then it is wrong. Anything that goes against how he is feeling that day he is grading is marked off would not recommend. Is extremely passive aggressive and give lectures and speaks in a condescending tone. Avoid if possible. Avoid the whole math department at OU if you can.
He is fun, and he tries his best to engage students in class, but he sometimes goes extremely fast in lectures. Sometimes it is also hard to understand his notes since he pretty much handwrites them, and he needs to work on his handwriting. If you take him, you'll like his jokes and stuff but prepare yourself since Discrete math is too hard.
Professor Cheng gives you the grade you deserve. There were 3 exams. He made it clear that if you bombed one and did well on the others as well as participated then you deserved a higher grade. He does go fast sometimes, but every lecture is recorded (at least for the online class) so you can go back.
Prof Cheng is a great, super caring professor who truly does want you to succeed in his class. Always available and ready to work both during lecture and outside whenever questions arise. PLEASE pay attention during lecture, this course is extremely difficult, but Eddie will do his best to help you get through as long as you put in the extra effort
This class is HARD.I recommend taking discrete prior to this one. You will struggle regardless tho. Professor Cheng does truly care about his students. Participate and do all the work including EC he gives. If you show you care and show improvement he will take that into consideration. You cannot get by from lectures alone. Study outside of class.
Super hard to understand his lectures. Does not give a clear definition of the stuff he teaches. Most of the lectures are just examples. One of the worst professors I've had. 0/10
Prof. Cheng is a pretty nice Professor, make sure you attend class and those bonus marks will help out a lot at the end of the semester. He will give hints to what will be on the exam, and his skeletons are pretty helpful along with the sample exams. To sum it up, show up to class and take some time to study, best math prof at OU.
Eddie is a very caring prof but this class is NOT easy. You have to study outside of class on your own, make use of his practice outlines and make your own examples to test yourself. If you do that, may attention and show up in class, you will succeed.
He is a nice guy but that will not save you as his ability to teach you the material is rather poor. You will need to study outside of class constantly. The class is also test heavy so be prepared for a tough time.
Would recommend taking this course anywhere but OU... His lectures are hard to get through, has horrible handwriting so rewatching his lectures are pointless... I almost wished he assigned homework for points just to cushion your grade since it's just based on quizes/exams and the final. This is also a class I wouldn't recommend taking online.
Prof Cheng wants you to do well, but you have to put in the work by attending all lectures, reviewing the notes & videos. For the tests/exams, he will give a skeleton(review), and there are no trick questions. Also, he will not put problems students struggled with on upcoming tests. Not the best grader (sometimes tough), but he wants you to succeed
Best online class I've had. Professor himself tries hard to make material easy to grasp, but subject matter is VERY hard. He's accessible, funny, and blunt, and I wish he'd teach simpler material so I could enjoy his class. His skeletons literally tell you some of the questions he'll ask, and quizzes were changed to your exam score if better.
Prof.Cheng is caring for his students. He wants you to pass and will make sure to do his best to explain the material. He gives test skeletons (study guides), and those helped a lot. But you have to do the sample exams many times and even try to make up your own problems and practice. This professor saved me by helping pass 2663.
Professor Cheng does go a bit fast at times. But I liked how he provided us with many example questions and gave us the info on how many questions would be on the test, and which problems to study. If you showed a decent amount of correct work, he would give partial credit. I am happy i passed even with the grade I got.
Prof.Cheng isn't that great. He grades very picky. If you show all steps correct to a problem but he thinks you just memorized them, then he'll fail you. I still don't understand why he thinks we can do difficult proof problems on exams.
Prof.Cheng could really improve his way of teaching. He goes over new concepts and expects us to understand them immediately. He gets agitated when we ask questions. His tests are alright, but grading is just unfair. There is nothing else to boost your grade, except quizzes which are worth JUST 2%!! He needs to change his syllabus because its BAD!
Eddie is the best math professor. He provides a skeleton for exams which clearly states what to expect on exams. He's lectures are very engaging and funny. With that being said this class is not easy, you do need to study outside of class and put in work, at the end of the day this class is still discrete mathematics.
I find it funny that a student who took this professor over a year ago would post a review on here again boasting about how they got an A in this class. This professor isn't that funny, and he isn't much of a fair grader either. He tends to go fast during lectures. Stop boasting; it's annoying.
Prof.Cheng helped me to pass discrete math and linear algebra. He really wants his students to pass and be able to take higher level math or other major classes. He curves our grades at the end of the semester if he sees that you attended every lecture, participated, and shown you want to pass. Gives exam skeletons that are similar to actual exam.
Eddie is a nice guy and he is funny, but if you do not focus on the lectures, things get very confusing. Be sure to study for tests and quizzes because the material does get hard at some times. He does give you a good heads up of what is going to be on tests/ quizzes in advance.
It is extremely easy to fall behind, and all of his lectures are recorded. He is intelligent and can answer anything that is thrown at him, but the exams are the most difficult part of this course. He gives a skeleton outlining the questions on the exam, but his curves make this class passable for anyone putting in effort.
APM2663 will be a hard class regardless of the professor. Dr. Cheng is easily the best option available. He gives practice tests and outlines for each test and records every lecture. He is very generous with partial credit, he's funny, and is a nice guy overall. He throws out curveballs on tests, though, so be sure you understand the material well
Professor Cheng is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is always willing to help you if you need it, whether it be in person or an online meeting. The course material is challenging but he basically tells you what is on the test. There is no homework. Take it with him
Lectures are hard to follow. Professor goes too fast, has sloppy handwriting, is hard to understand verbally, and does not give homework assignments. There are not many opportunities to change your grade. Content on the exams is complex and hard to understand, as well.
Strong accent and questionable handwriting, but imo it's easy to get over that. He records and posts lecture and notes (i didn't go to half the classes and still passed) and gives skeletons for exams.
Fun guy, very interactive with the students, loves to teach. Also is a great human in general! Will (almost always) boost your grade at the end of the semester, he gets that this subject is hard.
I liked professor Cheng, but most of my friends did not. I have former experience teaching math so most of what we went over was review for me and I wasn't actually learning it. Anything I didn't know already I had to teach myself because he does not explain well. His accent also makes him a little bit hard to understand and his handwriting is too.
