His class is so easy, you don't even have to really go. Just show up for the reviews and your entire grade is based on the midterm and final, which are really straight-forward.
Wide ranging knowledge, really interested in his students, has field experience in archaeology that provides interesting background to the class discussions.
He is not just an instructor but an educator. He is very interested in his students, very understanding and flexible. His tests are really easy all u have 2 do is read the books and go to review days.gives extra points to help peop[le with the grades.
He is a nice guy that is boring in class.
He is a poor dresser and talks a lot in class. I wish that he wrote the stuff on the board so I could follow him better.
hes pretty quirky but has very interesting stories. hel always ask with great xpectation if anyway has ever been to some place noones ever heard of.its cute.tests are easy he gives you a sample from where he chooses the test questions which is very helpful.east class just ask your question several times he does forget and get entangled.RECOMENDED
The entire class is lecture, you just sit and take notes, and he uses complicated words in the test. Not crazily hard though. Kind.
A really, really nice guy - but with poor organizational skills. Gets sidetracked, sometimes repeats himself, and isn't always very clear. He hands out a list of possible essay questions beforehand, so as long as you take good notes, you should be fine. He grades on a curve, final grade is based only on the two midterms and extra credit.
Best teacher I ever had.
Edgar Torres is on my top 5 list of the best 5 teachers I have ever had at city college...This proffesor is sooooooo coooool he is one of the best, it's sad because there are so many really CRAPY teachers at city college, but not Torres
Mr. Torres needs to write what he talks about. I could not follow his thinking in class. Too he needs to clean up and look like a teach
He's a really nice guy, but he's of the "press play on the VCR" school of teaching. I'm sure his other classes might be good, because he is smart, but he really didn't seem qualified to teach an art history class. We seldom looked at slides, we almost never covered description or analysis of pieces, and the focus of the class was on general history, definitely not art history. I will emphasize again that he's a really nice guy. He's just bad at teaching art history.
He's a really nice guy, but he's of the "press play on the VCR" school of teaching. We seldom looked at slides, we almost never covered description or analysis of pieces, and the focus of the class was on general history, not art history. Good thing this isn't a pre-req for anything, because there is a 0% chance that you will learn what you need.
Great class! Dr. Torres is extremely knowledgeable and experienced when it comes to Central American sites and extinct cultures. Tests are easy enough if you attend the reviews, and the course has left me wanting to see some of these places for myself.
it is about time there is a teacher who is knowledgable of thier field. I have learned alot and I am greatful. Mr T is awsome
very kool teacher, makes the subject vey interesting..
YOU DO LEARN A LOT
1. Likable 2. laid back 3.disorganized 4.friendly 5.confusing 6.talks too much
really cool guy, i've had him twice and he is very laid back. fun class!
Very knowledgable and experienced archaeologist/ historian/ anthropologist with an enormous collection of personal slides of meso-american and Peruvian artifacts and locations. Enthusiastic about his subject and helping you understand it. Great human being.
Mr. Torres is very knowledgable. He truly loves what he is teaching and makes it easy and fun to learn.
He is a good teacher, and really wants all his students to succeed. His lectures are a little boring at times, but he is really enthusiastic about the material and prepares you well for his exams. Take him even if you don't like Art History!
A nice teacher. Interesting lectures. He really wants everyone to pass the class. He is extremely flexible and helpful. Some have said that he is disorganized, but he is actually very busy. I recommend him.
He definitely knows what he's talking about, but is a bit scatter-brained. He talks a lot about his own experiences in the filed, which is interesting, but he goes totally off track from what he's supposed to be teaching. All in all, it was an interesting class, and not very hard. He's also a very friendly guy.
Mr. Torres has great, interesting lectures. If you want to learn a lot about ancient Latin American cultures, takes his class. Plus, his exams are extremely easy and he grades on a curve.
This teacher truly cares about his students and their learning. Although he goes off track to share his personal life experiences, which by the way, have some relevance to the content, you do end up learning a lot more than you would from the text book. He brings his own handouts and discusses the most appropiate for the class topics. He also bring
Super knowledgeable! I thought he was a fantastic teacher who clearly loves his job and the material. I liked all of his stories about Latin America the best, you really grasp the flavor. He is genuinely interested in his students doing well in the class and is open to helping you. Great class. Really expanded my mind.
very nice, interesting, passionate teacher. really knows what he is talking about, has lots of experience in the field, and really wants students to learn. very helpful and understanding. kind of disorganized sometimes, but in an endearing, laid-back way.
Mr.Torres is the only teacher that is actually a good listener, he understands mistakes. He is a really good tecaher very explainable. I really really recommend his history and anth. class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Torres comes from a lot of experience and makes class more interesting with his stories. However with this he tends to go off topic ALOT. Nevertheless he works with you for whatever you are willing to put in his class and gain some Latin history.
super good teacher really good class
Film, if you can, all the slides, and you will pass this class with flying colors. Not a good lecturer. Extremely egotistical (talks about himself for weeks) and tried to justified his beard as a typically mayan feature based on bearded men in stelae. I am from southern mexico where like in Guatemala there are indiginous people and none have beards
really nice professor. rambled occasionally, but usually related everything to the subject matter. he has a lot of his own experience in the field and therefore the class is taught based off his experiences. he goes over everything needed for midterm and final in a few good review sessions. the class was almost too easy...
Unprepared; disorganized, rambling lectures, nice guy.
Nice guy but this class was a joke. I have never felt cheated by a class until now. 40% of lectures were history channel tapes. The only 'teaching' is on the exam review days when you are told what will be on the exam. Final took 15 minutes - enough said.
This professor is amazing! He is knowledgable, organized, experienced, and most importantly caters to the students need. Comments below me are completely false. Mr. Torres cares about the students, teaches very interesting topics, and most importantly is worth taking. He is truly an amazing professor who CARES about his students! A must at CCSF!
One of my 2 favorite professors in 3 years at City College. Can't understand the negative review-he is brilliant, loves his students, and is severely passionate about the material. I loved his personal stories of being an archeologist in Mexico. He really expanded my mind, especially about Native American history. Take him!
Nice guy with good intentions but he wasn't knowledegable on Colonial or Modern Latin American Art. Class was mostly limited to precolumbian Mexican Art, murals in SF, student militancy, politics and anything else but the description of the class. There was plenty of time that was badly managed. Very disappointing. Won't take a class again with him
An extemely well informed instructor who brings recently research as well as his own past experiences ti the classroom. In particular current archaeological and socio/cultural fieldwork. He also works well with his students often inviting them to events that are related at various museums in the bay area. He truly wants his students to suceed.
He's a very good teacher, very interesting aids for class, tests are multiple choice, to pass you just need to have notes from class, guaranteed! If you take it at 8am will be boring for you, manage your time and energy for this type of class where you need to pay close attention.
Tests subjectively on readings that he has never discussed in class. Short identification for him means a page. Short essay means 3+ pages. Talks about himself constantly. Loves his latino students, discouraging to others. I don't know how this man is head of the department. CCSF needs to check itself.
Torres is a great instructor. His lectures feature his own work in the field. He brings the most current information easy to understand. He makes the difficult to understand easy
He has great slides many which include art objects which you cannot find on the internet. Tests are hard but if you pay attention to the reviews you can get an "A." If you don't the class can be difficult
He loves teaching especially his Art History Courses. He always gives out about 20 ids and six essays questions for review. Study these well and the class is easy.
So laid back that he is lazy and boring. Talks a lot.
Just an average teach from my standpoint.Easy grader.
Mr. Torres is an incredible person! It is obvious that he loves people to succeed. The class was very interesting, and if you pay attention you will pass the class.
Extremely Helpful! The content of the class is very interesting. The slides and materials are really cool!I enjoyed the class!
A great teacher with so much knowledge in the content being taught. Not only does he explain with lectures but also uses slides to help students visualize and understand better the class. A great class to take to learn about the ancient art of latin america!
GREAT TEACHER! VERY HELPFUL AND UNDERSTANDING! U WILL ENJOY THIS CLASS VERY MUCH! NO HOMEWORK AT ALL! JUST A MIDTERM & FINAL! HE ALSO GOES OVER WHAT MIGHT BE ON THE TEST! ALSO IF YOU GET A LOW SCORE YOU HAVE 3 EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES. HE'S GREAT! THANX MR. TORRES!!!!!!!!!!!
prof torres is an extremely intelligent man and has studied L.A history in all its aspects.classes are long and he mostly just talks, often goes on tangents. you dont really use the books until the last test but prof. T tries to tell you everything that will be on the tests.you should have an interest in this subject, not an easy A
THE BEST! Ive learn so much about my own culture you have no idea! If you ever wanna take a trip to latin america and really have a taste of what it was like there for ancient cultures, first take his class, you wont believe how amazing your trip would be after knowing all that!
One of the easiest classes I have ever had. Show up to class and pay attention. He gives you handouts prior to the test which contain everything you need to get an A. Memorize those handouts and you'll get an A. No joke it's that easy
You'll do good in this class if you are interested in the subject. I'm not one of those people. Its 1 1/2 hour of pure lecture..super boring! Only 2 tests: the midterm and final. If you do bad, it WILL affect your grade but he does offer extra credit.
Great teacher but i have no motivation to come to class because he doesnt take attendance. otherwise, great class easy because only three tests whole semester
Very knowledgable and extremely passionate about his subject and the success of his students. Just like any class at any college, you have to make your successes. Dr. Torres was nothing but helpful, and I didn't mind seeking him out for clarity after a lecture that turned into a ramble. Lots of smart profs ramble. It's up to you to learn the stuff.
grade is based on 2 tests. EC available. tested on 3 definition questions, 1 short essay and SLIDE IDENTIFICATION so show up during the review! study guide for the first 2 and he will review slides. He will play them during the test and you will have to identify them(culture, time and etc). Sound difficult? Good news is low 50's % a "C" LOL
I really enjoyed his class. He is very passionate about the subject and encourages discussions. He has a very sweet, modest and warm demeanor. The tests are challenging, but he gives out a review worksheet of what will be on each test. Attendance is important, because many questions are from lecture discussions.
Professor Torres is so nice and understanding. I was late all the time and he never gave me grief. I added really late too but he met me half way on everything. Exams aren't hard if you study, if you don't study you could still get a D. BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!! ATTENDANCE IS NOT MANDATORY BUT HIS LECTURES ARE GOOD!!
This might be the worst class I have ever taken. I know this is rate my professor but in this case I am referring specifically to this class which, if you have any interest in learning about MODERN Latin American art you should not take. Half the class is about ancient art of the region and the second half has BS videos/guest lecturers.
very thourough, interesting, passionate teacher. really knows what he is talking about, has lots of experience in the colleagues which come to class, and really wants students to learn. very helpful and understanding. kind of disorganized sometimes, but in an endearing, laid-back way.
Great class. Great visual. Professor Torres teaches you to think see anew, think anew. Wish there could be more instructors who know the subject matter as well as he does and cares for students has he does
Great class! I learned so much about the cultures of the region. His slides are usually pictures he has taken himself and he has a personal experience with each site he discusses. The tests are pretty easy and if you bomb the first one he offers even more extra credit than normal. First test is easier than the second so do as well as possible on it
There is not enough positive that I can say about Prof. Torres. When they made this man they truly broke the mold. There are very, very few teachers that go out of their way to make YOUR success as a student possible, this man does.if you have the good fortune to have him as your teacher know that he cares and that your success matters sincerely.
Easy professor, lectures are boring, uses documentaries most of the time. He grades on a curve, easy test and he offers extra credit which is nice.
Lazy, disorganized, and unhelpful. I took him for art and history and he recycles lectures. He come to class late, he's also unprepared and just tends to ramble. Very self centered and spends more time talking about self rather than teaching. I can tell he's passionate about his subject but he's just not a good teacher. Questions confuse him.
Very easy for Art 105. Pay attention to the review before the final and you'll do fine. I recommend that you pay attention to lectures though.
The material is interesting, but his lectures are really boring. He is not organized, frequently shows up late, and doesn't really know how use the equipment to show slides, so we waste a lot of time in class just waiting for him to set it up. Tests are really easy.
Professor Torres is an outstanding Credit to the Human Race. City College is lucky to have him. He is passionate about Anthropology and the guy knows his stuff. excellent professor. He is there for his students :)
Edgar is one of my favorite teachers, he actually cares about you and wants you to do well. Attendance not mandatory! but you gotta show up for the handouts at some point. We just had quizzes. Listen in class and do the light reading assignments and you're good. I did't get the book or anything either.
Clear cut on materials covered, clear cut on what to expect on tests, grades on a curve, extra credit, easy A. He's very passionate about Hispanic cultures as a whole, very intelligent. Teaching methods are a bit unorthodox, but in a good way.
DON'T buy the books. Class is a WASTE of time. EXTREMELY BORING. If you are a serious student do not take his class, it is so boring. fairly easy A but since its so boring its hard to focus. would not recommend him. BORING!!!!!
Prof. Edgar Torres is a great instructor! Every class, he provides very interesting information that helps to develop critical thinking. Moreover, he offers office hours, and he is always willing to explain you more about the different topics that are seen in the class. Prof. Torres is a great inspiration to every Latinoa!
OMG so easy, and so fun... for me at least! love Latino anything love Latina anything! he makes you proud to come from such a beautiful history, and he really makes it easy for non-latinos to understand. i would take him every semester if i could, wonderful guy!!! TAKE HIS CLASS... AHORA!!!
Do not take this class. I took the summer class and everyone wanted to just leave. He is unorganized and does not take questions seriously. I am so angry that I wasted a summer session with this professor. Save some time and go take a worthwhile class.
I would not take a class with this professor again. Although he means well, this class was a complete waste of time. Everyone was either asleep or on their phone. His lectures are rough as you feel like crawling into a whole. Most people got okay grades but don't waste your time. I wish I spent my summer taking another class.
Don't take this class! His teaching is very unorthodox. I wanted to learn about the Latin American history, but don't expect any of that from this class. You will find yourself lost, and confused because he's so disorganized!Look at my notes, one minute he's talking about earliest history of human presence and the next he's talking about the Olmecs
Extremely Boring. Like other reviews, his teaching style is very unusual. He can be very chatty and tends to go off topic.
If you are lazy, don't like to study, don't like history and wants an easy grade, don't take this class. It is not for you. Otherwise, you will love it , like I did.
I took a class from Mr Torres in 2015. It was pretty disappointing. Mr. Torres is a very nice guy but he is weak and tired. He is disorganized and for the amount of time I spent on this class, his rambling, repetitious, unprepared approach to education, and his failure to engage our attention, made the course a chore rather than an inspiration.
Hands down THE WORST professor I have had in my entire time in school. Disorganized, unprepared, self-centered are just a few words to describe this professor. Very difficult for anyone who is unfamiliar with Latino culture to learn.
Take him if you enjoy watching documentaries! Edgar was supposed to lead an in-class review for the midterm, but instead he put on a documentary, and walked out of the classroom.
This man's prime is very, very far behind him. If he has knowledge on the subjects he teaches, he completely lacks the ability to communicate the information, relying on poorly organized powerpoints, rambling and unfocused lectures, and handouts that feel like they were prepared five minutes before class.
would expect college professor to hold himself to higher standards than edgar torres sees for himself. also makes the same dumb jokes every class and then pauses to see if anyone laughs (no one will). sorry, no one's interested in your stand up routine.
Amazing person and Instructor, he has led and been on many excavations and has so much knowledge that he passes onto his students and he will right a letter of recommendation if you a good student like I was, Thank you Edgar for being so amazing.
Words are not enough to explain this amazing professor.
Amazing person.
do not take this class in the summer. you have to read and understand a lot of material for his tests. i did not have fun in this class at all. if you are still thinking of taking this class during the summer, make sure to take a look at the textbook first. i didnt, and was forced to keep the class as i had already missed the first drop date.
I have taken his classes & worked for professor TORRES and I learned a lot about my culture!!! I love that old professor he is dependable !!!He helps out everyone from veterans to jcats !!!
Great class. Not only learned about Colonial History of Latin American but the class focused on institutions found among the Prehistoric Civilizations. Great stuff.
I took Anthropology 2 this summer. This is a difficult class to take in a six week setting. Professor Torres gave extra credit and his reviews were excellent. The class would have been impossible if he did not do a good job of outlining what to expect on the tests.
This the first art history course that I have ever taken. I was always interested in the subject matter but was blown away by the beauty of the art and architecture of ancient Latin America. It was especially meaningful to learn about it from someone like Professor Torres who is so passionate about the material.
Professor Torres is a great teacher. He often talks about concepts with current examples that everyone can relate to. He makes it a point to help everyone and is a vet himself. I wish there were more teachers who helps students like he does. He volunteers to write letters if needed. Who else does that?
I love the images which were taken in the 19th century and showed what this sites looked like before they were excavate. He has a great collection of images from all over Latin America. The best part is that he has been an active researcher. He has worked in Central America, Peru, etc. Take his class he is a great caring teacher.
I've taken all of Professor Torres" classes. He at first seems very distant but before long one realizes how well he knows the subject matter. He has worked everywhere in Mexico, Central America and Peru. He claims that if you take his class you will be able to separate the art of the Olmec, Maya, Moche and Inca from each other. He was right!
Professor Torres' History class was an easy "A" for me. I can't believe students fail or get less that a "C" grade. He actually makes up the exam with the class. It may be a lot to study but there are no surprises. You just need to prepare
I've take all of Professor Torres' classes. His art history sections are the best. I learned so much about the art of the Aztecs, Mayas and their ancestors. He possesses a wealth of knowledge which he loves to share. He truly loves the subject matter and often tell stores of his personal work at sites in Mexico, Central America and Peru
Anthropology 11 requires a lot of reading. His texts are easy because he gives out the questions in advance. You do have to work but nothing is overly difficult
Professor Torres is a great teacher who is dedicated to his subject matter but is also a hard worker for his students. His classes are clear, informative and very entertaining. I wish the school would have more teachers that were as dedicated. Easy "A"
Professor Torres completely changed by understanding of the Colonial History of Latin America. I was shocked to find out that place and nouns for many things in Mexico are actually Taino in origin. Names like, Tiburon, Yuca, Maize, and many more.
Take History 18A and you will walk away with a better understanding of events not made clear in high school history classes. He is a easy grader who will let you make up a poor grade with extra credit. Attend class and the class is even easier.
Professor Torres is my favorite instructor at City College. He helped me get into UC Berkeley like another other teacher. His lectures always include his own contributions to the field. I recommend taking him but at first recognize that he comes off as too demanding. Get to know him and he is always willing to work with you.
Anthropology is my major. I was informed by my counselor that Dr. Torres had undertaken extensive archaeological fieldwork in Latin America. Boy was that an understatement. He has worked multiple decades in S. Mexico, Central America and Peru. He loves to share this with students and is very student oriented. He is very open to extra credit.
I am finishing taking History 18A from Professor Torres. He not only helped change previously held misconceptions of Latin American history but his approach is to investigate everything critically. Attendance is not mandatory but it sure helps make the class much easier. I highly recommend taking this class. It will open yours eyes even at a 8
I took his night class when I was a High School Senior. Super easy class as long as you do the reading and take notes! I think your entire grade is based on the midterm exam and final exam (multiple choice in my class) so taking notes and doing the readings are essential. Can get boring, sometimes he'd leave during documentaries. Learned a lot!
Great class. Classmates do well if they participate. Attendance is the key.
Reading are difficult but Torres goes over them in class. He likes students to ask questions. Easy A but an easy F too.
This is my last semester and I wish I had taken a class from Professor Torres earlier. Not only does he present a wonderful engaging class in the Ancient Art and Arch. of Latin American but he is one of the few instructors who will spend time with you outside of class answering questions regarding transfer. He wrote me 2 letters of rec'dation.
I took Torres's HIST 18A Spring 2019. Here's a breakdown: the first exam is based on the lectures, the second exam is textbook/lecture based, and the third exam is textbook based. Films may be dull, but helpful for tests. He is lenient on attendance; accessible outside of class; offers lots of extra credit. Personally, I enjoyed his class.
Prof. Torres is a nice person, I guess. But he clearly doesn't know how to organize lectures. If he talks, it's always about himself. And since he doesn't really teach anything, he offers very generous amount of extra-credits and a lenient grading curve. If you used to a systematic approach in studies, don't take him it may be painfull.
A good teacher overall. Yeah, he goes off on tangents about himself pretty frequently in class, but if you skim the textbook and read the handouts closely youll get a good grade. Show up consistently and he gives you a grade boost at the end of the semester.
Edgar Torres has clearly lived a more interesting life than most of us have and has so many amazing anecdotes from his time out in the field as a grad student. Very interesting class that definitely exceeded my expectation. That being said his focus seems more geared towards anthropology so morph your expectations around that. Overall Great Teacher
Edgar doesn't actually teach. He may be better offline but basically you end up having to read 640 pages of textbook (50 a chapt.) in the hope that you can memorize it because your ENTIRE grade is based upon only three exams. The crazy thing is the study guides provided are confusing, spelled wrong, and don't even cover what's on the exams.
After all these weeks, we've only met with Prof. Torres 3 times. Overall, we had one official essay assignment due, to which Prof Torres had accidentally duplicated the module, so it was a copy-paste 2nd essay, and even his grading method was off. Offered no kind of feedback for improvement whatsoever. Sure this class was easy, but eh.
talks about himself in lectures but at least they aren't mandatory. entire grade based on 3 exams to which he gives the questions beforehand so you can write as much as you can. he grades based on the work of your classmates, so if they had better answers you have a worse grade.
Professor Torres is a cool guy. I like his attitudes towards running a class, he records the lectures, attendance isn't strictly mandatory, and he wants everyone to do well. Just whatever.
It doesn't seem like he grades papers or discussions. He runs them through the plagiarize machine and if it shows anything has been plagiarized you're marked down. My only points off were for copying the question into the body of my answer. Be creative with your writing to avoid similarities to others and you should be fine.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He grades on a curve. Only had 3 assignments which were the Exams, they are passable as long as you read the book. SO READ THE BOOK.
The course was interesting at times. The professor is technology-challenged, making learning from his video lectures challenging. Most of the course was spent on two cultures without branching into other regional cultures. You'll get some feedback on short essays, discussion posts that are straightforward, and some easy quizzes.
The class can be engaging if you participate. Professor Torres is tech-challenged, but his lectures are worth attending. Use Unstuck AI and the textbook to stay on top - it pays off with a solid grade.
Professor Torres was one of the most frustrating professors I've had. Communicating with him for questions or clarification was difficult and often required multiple emails. Although I rented three books for the class, we only really used one. While the subject matter was interesting, I would not take this class with this professor again.
Professor Torres is a very nice and well respected professor, although he isn't that tech savy so it is crucial for you to reach out if you think there is a msitake. Also, reach out to him, he was always able to accommodate! The class is very interesting and informative, but criteria is fuzzy, make sure you ask as many questions as you can!
What ppl have said abt him is very much true.He doesn't really teach is class, just talks about his life & other things, then pivots back to the lecture randomly but u won't be paying much attention.Makes u read the textbooks and packets for the tests (Just short essays and definitions).Ur grade is based on wtv u get in those tests but he gives EC.
