Chang was boring, often would go off topic during lecture and did not hold my attention the entire class. Study guides are way too elongated and convers way too much material. I do not recommend
Chang is HILARIOUS. he is the nicest guy i have ever met. he is very helpful, and always wants you to come talk to him in office hours if u need help. i had him as a TA too, and he was the BEST! Chang was one of my favorite professors this quarter. take him if you can. and hte study guides are short and to the point!
approachable and friendly. knowledgeable about his history. clear lectures, lecture outlines and study guides online. He is a newbie as a professor but he's quickly catching up. laidback and chill.
Awesome professor. Definitely knows his subject matter and loves to teach it. His lectures are interesting, but also follow the reading closely. Tests are easy, but be sure to read everything since he likes to put questions on it that you could only know from doing reading all the source material. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
too cool for school. loves turtles!
he was extremely clear and to the point. made it extremly easy to get an A in the class
all i gots to say is study guides! a great prof, and he is very clear. needless to say, the study guides are helpful :)
I had Professor Chang for both MMW3 and MMW4. He is by far the best teacher I've ever had and is super friendly! I don't know anyone who doesn't like him and his classes always fill up the fastest. His study guides are extremely helpful so as long as you know everything on it, you're set for the test. He's always willing to help on essays + tests!
Chang is AWESOME! He is super friendly, approachable, and truly cares about his students. His lectures hold your attention pretty well, especially since he likes to crack some jokes here and there. I've had him for MMW2, MMW3, & MMW4. It would be a mistake if you didn't take this man.
Very approachable and makes the class interesting. Lectures don't have overwhelming amounts of info (sometimes I felt this way in Herbst/Chamberlain) and the material is not that difficult to learn and memorize. Since he gives you a great study guide with passages included you don't have to do the reading to do well. I
His lectures can sometimes be boring, but go if you're not going to read, because he goes over the important readings during class. ALso, he gives an overwhelming study guide for midterms & finals, listed with 100+ vocab words, 4-8 passage IDs, and essay questions. If you review this, you'll be set for the exam.
I have taken Chang for 3 quarters of MMW (2,3,4). He is great MMW professor! He outlines all his lectures for you which makes it really easy to take lecture notes. I would highly recommend everyone who wants to enjoy there 6 quarters of MMW to take Chang.
Great guy. After taking him for 4, it made me regret not picking him for 2 and 3 as well. Two midterms w/ MC, short answer, and IDs (given ahead of time so you can memorize them), useful study guide, and outlined lectures. Lectures were fairly interesting and he had open review sessions before every exam. He also reminds me of my dad.
Chang is seriously my favorite professor at UCSD --he is a very genuine guy, and you can tell he is very passionate about what he is teaching. He is very helpful, easy to talk to, and funny. HIGHLY reccommend Chang for your MMW experience!!!
Chang is so passionate about MMW. I have Herbst now, an even though his lectures on history might be more interesting, Chang's lectures on philosophy and religion are just so passionate, he really wants you to understand the world and he's extremely helpful and nice in the process. The tests are easy and hes a really nice guy, like a little Buddha!
Professor Chang is probably the best MMW professor on campus. He really enjoys teaching and the material in class. I had him for both section and lecture. I would highly recommend all incoming MMW students to try to get him for MMW.
I've had Chang for four quarter of MMW. He is extremely passionate aobut everything he teaches and doesn't get caught up on history facts and dates. Rather, he lectures on big picture ideas. After these courses you are able to relate each one to the next and it's a continuous learning experience of how the world came to be what it is today.
Professor Chang is entertaining at times. However, I think he makes events connect to each other in ways that don't make any sense. The MMW TA makes or breaks your grade (Cat Gmuca is a difficult grader).
My Favorite Professor so far at UCSD! He is so passionate about his subject, and genuinely cares about teaching things that are useful. Tests are easy to study for because he gives a very extensive study guide, and lectures are always interesting-His outline is very easy to follow/take notes on. Take him for MMW!!!!
Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. He makes MMW not only bearable but very enjoyable. I've had days full of crap but Prof. Chang always proves to be a bright spot in a rainy day. He will give you a more worldly perspective.
I love Dr. Chang, he is the best teacher. His tests are difficult but he gives an amazing study guide. He is an awesome lecturer and he has interesting stories to help illustrate his points. Highly highly recommend him.
Dr. Chang is a great lecturer; he organizes his lectures very well and links them together in a story format that is easy to follow. He also provides review guides before the tests which basically outline his tests. He is a very nice guy and very approachable. He does not surprise you in the tests, but he has a lot of reading to do.
If you study for his exams, you will get an A since he provides a full study guide. Nice guy, good professor. Grade depends on TA as for all of MMW. Lecture style does not facilitate note taking until you have him more than once. Often goes on tangents.
Your grade depends on your TA, that's how it is in MMW. He gave out study guide which was helpful. It was a little hard for me to take notes in his class, he used a lot of big words. The Bentley book is useless, so u could just save some money. Sometimes i think it is unfair to depend ur grades on TA, cuz every Ta had a different standard..
I really liked him as a professor overall. His lectures were interesting and they facilitated note-taking. However, his class requires a lot of reading (more than other MMW 4 classes) and two midterms. He isn't the most approachable at first, but get to know him because he's actually very friendly and helpful.
Great professor with a lot of passion in teaching the lessons that can be learned from history. I've had him ever since MMW2 and it's mostly been a smooth ride for the past 4 quarters with him. Just be sure to stay alert or otherwise you'll miss out on essential notes.
Great professor!! He is very captivating. I hate history, but he made that class one of my favorites. He is unintentionally funny, which makes class always interesting. You never know what he will say.
He's an okay lecturer. He does his job and teaches. Not the most exciting, but one of the better prof. for mmw. He gives study guide so is doable. You can get a good grade in this class only if you get a good ta. But he is fair and is always helpful in & out of class.
He is the BEST MMW teacher one could have. His lectures are VERY clear and easy to follow, unlike Jordan and Herbst who's lectures are all over the place. He is also extremely kind and ecstatic about what he is teaching. Chang is open and accessible outside of class. If you pay attention to lecture, you will do fine in the class.
Professor Chang is the best professor I have had so far! He makes lectures interesting, and his outlines for the lectures make it easy to write down quality notes to study off of. His study guide is awesome!! He is very approachable and available for help about the course. Everyone should want Chang for MMW.
As a Poli-Sci Major, I've taken lots of politics classes. Of all the classes I have taken here, no professor has been more biased than him. He is extremely liberal and rants about how much he hates conservatives almost everyday. He referred to himself as "marxist leaning" in class after talking about how the IMF and World Bank are evil capitalists.
This is by far one of the best Prof.'s at UCSD! Seriously! If you have to take the MMW sequence, do yourself a favor and take at least a class by him! He's on top of his lectures--everything's organized and clear. His study guides really help, too. He's really into wanting ppl to learn, and not as much into testing, so tests are extremely fair.
Pretty interesting Professor to have if you get a chance to take one of his courses. Besides the material you're supposed to learn he's full of interesting stories related to the class and it's great when he gets guest lecturers there. This man is funny to be around and his lectures are great to listen to! Fun, entertaining, and educational!!
His lectures are great, like storytelling but the tests are HARD. SO much is on the study guides that it is impossible to know them all. Test structure for me was very difficult, matching obscure terms.
He is such a good professor! I love attending his lectures he is very good at explaining the subject matter. Tests are easy if you attend the lectures and take good notes. He gives review sessions before exams too! Would strongly recommend him. I'm taking him for MMW 5 too!
AWESOME AWESOME. Out of all the professors for MMW, he's definitely the easiest IMO. His lectures are straightforward AND he puts a lecture outline online [but doesn't podcast]. He gives you study guides for the MTs and final, the terms are straight from lecture, AND he gives you the passage IDs and essay prompt ahead of time.
Professor Chang is so approachable and definitely cares about his students. Go to office hours!
best professor at ucsd, enough said.
This guy is pretty cool. I absolutely hate MMW though. It's really annoying and time consuming, especially when you're a science/engineering major.Chang's exams are pretty fair. Study his review guides and you'll be fine. As for the papers though, it's all up to your TA. Luckily, I got a pretty easy going TA.
Best lecturer ever. Must take class!
Really fun guy to listen to during class. His tests are all based on what he says in lecture so I really recomend that u go. The best thing to do would be to buy a recoder and tape it. Really helps when u are going over the study guide. And grades are all based on what TA u get. Mine was really nice and graded easy, but some might not be that way..
Chang is a person that is rare to find anymore. He is passionate and humble, and just his character alone is enough to teach a student, let alone his class material. Go to class and take great notes and you will do well in his class. Absorb what he is teaching, because if we all did, we'd become better people in life.
Great professor. But grades depend on the TA that you get....so rating the "easiness" really does not matter since the TAs do the grading.
One of the best MMW professors! Lectures are very interesting. Chang tells it like a story and keeps you connecting things to the themes of the course. Very nice guy and genuinely is concerned about his students. Grading varies from TA to TA though. You must have Chang at least once in during your MMW sequence or else you will be missing out.
He's so nice and sweet. He tells lectures like a story and keeps you interested. He's pretty funny sometimes and he is super chill. It's the TA's you need to watch out for, they make or break your grade.
Provides pretty thorough notes, can do well if listen in lecture without reading. Exams are A OK.
He is one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are so interesting that I actually liked coming to class. Originally I really hated the idea of taking this class but now after sitting through Chang's lectures I don't mind one bit.
Great guy, and if you can stay awake, his lectures are actually pretty intriguing. However, TA's pretty much determine your grade since they grade your tests and essays. He gives you a study guide for each midterm/final that's 100% what the test will look like (of course you won't know the questions he'll choose). Not a bad class at all.
Great guy. Gives the best lectures because he connects what he's teaching to a broader lesson. He has a way of teaching that speaks to each and every person in the room.
For some reason I felt MMW 21 was easier with him. There were a lot more terms to memorize this time so the class isn't exactly difficult. It's just a lot of memorization. I suggest u go to class and pay attention or take a tape recorder. Otherwise he gives an amazing lecture
Chang was the best MMW professor ever! Just go to lecture and listen and you'll get an A. Study guides are very helpful. He is really interesting and engages with the class. Loved him!
his lecture was good, but he doesn't care about his students at all!!
He is a nice prof, but for me, an international student, taking notes at his class is really difficult. the review guide is always super super long. although i went to all his lecture and did all the readings, i still cannot rememeber everything for his exam.
Very passionate about his work. Teaches in a style where he just talks to the class. Teaches class off an outline he posts online. Midterm was very challenging. 3 papers that I wasn't interested in. You need to work hard. It's the TA's that matter.
Chang is amazing! He is very passionate about teaching and is very helpful when it comes to exams. He is very supportive and really inspired me in his lectures. He is straightforward and he tells you what you need to know for the exams. I really loved his class!!! And my TA Sascha was so nice and helpful which made the class that much better!
Lectures are generally useless and full of several useless anecdotes from his personal life. The writing aspects of the class are rarely discussed, and readings and lectures are both useless if you just use wikipedia to complete study guides.
Dr. Chang has been one of the best professors I've had at UCSD. His lecture style is one I favor. He is very passionate and it shows in his lectures. He truly cares for his students and provides them with all of the resources in order to succeed in his class. He is very approachable and a pleasure to chat with after class and during office hours.
Professor Chang is the best! He's so passionate about history and he clearly loves to teach. Which is great because he's damn good at it! The best thing about him is that he's very approachable and easy to talk to. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to him, he's like the nicest guy in the world and really cares about all his students!
I took 4 classes with Chang, and he is very helpful and wants to get to know his students. He encourages students to introduce themselves during office hours. His tests are given ahead of time in the review outline. The extra credit come from the tangents he talks about in class.
He is a very good professor and knows his stuff focus more on your essays then the actual reading material use your TA and your writing center to ensure an A. DONT GET BEHIND ON READING! Test are easy with his study guides.
Great professor
Chang is a funny guy. I always wanted to skip class, but I never regretted going once I was there. He's a good lecturer, and taught me a lot. His office hours are all about him, which makes it hard to have a good conversation. He assigns hella reading, but you really only have to do the Bentley and some parts of the reader and you'll be fine.
I love Chang. He's funny and tries to connect the context to current issues. His lectures are heavily based off the readings, so you can possibly get away with not a reading once or twice, but the readings do help. His study guides are a lot of work but give you a fair chance of being well prepared for his test. Overall great professor!
The readings are ancient religious pieces, but the lectures (and essay assignments) were all based on his very subjective interpretations of what these mean in his personal life journey. Ugh. He mocked believers and nonbelievers, claiming "I'll make agnostics of you all". Repeat his beliefs in your essays for As, if you can stomach his rants.
Lecture is a must as his tests are based off the information he talks about during lecture. He makes you buy a $100 course reader, but you really don't need it. He is an amazing lecturer and keeps you engaged with his style of discourse and funny jokes here and there. Would definitely take again if I had the luck to get in his.
You won't fall asleep in his lectures and the material was alright. You have to buy a $100 reader though (didn't really read it). Make sure to ace the research paper!
He is a great teacher, but I feel that the theme of the first quarter tied in together better, than the second one. Your grade depends on your TA, so you better learn their grading styles. I think he is clear on what he expects from you on the test. Lectures are not mandatory but it does see like it bothers him when people don't show up.
Hand down !! Best MMW prof ever ! He give you the study guild that look exactly like what appear on mid-term and final :)
This IS a hard class, so if you find it struggling, it's not his fault. The class is actually very interesting, if you do all the readings (which is a lot though...). He is funny, passionate. Read ahead of time and you will do well in exams. Papers were given and graded by TA, so you need to attend dissucions. Overall I would say he is amazing.
Chang is an excellent professor in the sense that he is clear, concise and entertaining during his lectures. He also gives out study guides for the midterm and final that are almost identical due to the final and midterm. If you understand everything on the midterm, the midterm and final are EASY. Your writing grade depends on your TA.
This is a writing class. Be prepared to read and write. Attend class as the readings are super dense. Take good notes. Your TA is the only one who grades anything. He can be confusing. I think he means well, but I highly recommend the writing center and TA office hours to get a good grade. Hard exams but provides a study guide. Start papers early.
Prof. Chang is awesome. His lectures are at times pretty inspirational! He def. knows his stuff, and he's great at putting things in perspective. He made me realize so much about the world! His lectures are engaging and he's pretty funny too. At times he digresses from the lecture, but that's OK, it makes the lecture more interesting.
Good lecturer. Just do the study guides and you can get As on the tests
He is one of the best professors ever. I enjoyed going to his class.
Prof Chang's lectures are very organized and coherent. Not only does he gives you an outline of his lecture but he also connects concepts to important themes. In addition, his study guides give you exactly what you need to know for exams. Grading wise, it really depends on your TA And how generous he or she is. Dont get behind on readings.
He's an outstanding lecturer. The material he gives his students is phenomenal. Great sense of humor and just a good personality. He cares a lot about his students and really gives you a deeper understanding and perspective on what you are actually reading. Overall, AMAZING! I really do recommend Chang! He's the best of the best!
Professor Chang is a great lecturer. He lectures like story telling, and often would incorporate some humor into his lecture. Your grade depends entirely on the TA, and most of them are very tough graders. Chang also provides a very "extensive" study guide 1 week before the midterm and final. Lots of terms, concept, historical events to remember.
Chang is really funny and nice. He engaged well with the class. The class definitely has a lot of reading and he has a reading quiz every week si you definitely have to show up to class. It's nice that he has these quizzes though because it takes pressure off of the midterm and final.
Such a fantastic professor to start MMW. He really tries to hype people up for the entire MMW sequence. Reading quizzes are randomly given, and they are worth a solid amount of your grade. Readings are extremely long. Prepare for 50 pages of reading regularly. If reading is not your forte, take Jordan. Gives extensive study guides for tests.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!
If you are willing to do the work, you can learn so much from this professor. He is organized, prepared and keeps you interested. He provides an outline for all of his lectures and a study guide for the midterm and final exam. You will always know what to expect on the exam and as long as you read and attended lecture you should do well in the class
Chang is, by far, my favorite professor. He's a great storyteller and keeps his students engaged during lecture. He's hilarious and so kind. His class is really organized, with lecture outlines and exam study guides that are basically the exam themselves. There's A LOT of reading but you learn so much at the end of the day. 10/10 would take again.
Amazing professor: cares a lot about the content and his students. Class isn't mandatory, but there are quizzes once a week (not clicker ones). He gives review guides before the midterm and final, so if you do them thoroughly, the tests are not hard.
Professor Chang is the best!!! His lectures were really informative and clear. I wasn't looking forward to taking MMW, but he made me find history interesting. He's funny, energetic, and caring!!! Ask the TA for help if you don't understand some of the topics. Do the readings to pass his quizzes! And his tests are EXACTLY like his study guide.
Professor Chang is a really cool guy, holds interesting lectures and stories. Grading is mostly based off your TA/Discussion section and attendance is a must. Class isn't really too hard, just keep up with readings and show up to lecture and you should be able to pass.
Chang is really a great professor. BUT he gave too much reading and more 200 terms to memorize for exams. Be well prepared for this heavy workload.
Prof. Chang's lectures are very organized, passionate, and often story-like. He uses outlines and REALLY CLEAR STUDY GUIDES that are JUST LIKE the exams (so you never have to worry about what to study). There's a lot of reading, but all MMW classes are like that. He really cares about his subject and students. He doesn't use iClickers at all.
His lecture is fascinating. However, the reading really kills most of my classmates. If you want to learn and challenge you yourself, then try him.
Prof Chang's lecture is fascinating. However, his reading is so much that I could barely have time to work on other subjects, and usually end up forgetting many of the infos.
The class is inspirational. Despite relative heavy reading, his lecture is so fascinating that many students interact with him. Most importantly, he got study guide for midterm and final.
Professor Chang was an enthusiastic lecturer, amazing professor. I had his class for an hour and 20mins and it was entertaining and engaging for being a history class. Lectures and readings are important to pass the class. Quizzes aren't hard if you read.
Get ready to read, but if you go to lecture and sections, you should be able to get more help on understanding the readings. Chang is hilarious inside and outside the classroom. His lectures are very inspirational and relevant even outside of the course.
If you're down to do a whole ton of reading and study like 100+ key terms on the study guide + 6 passage ID's + a cumulative final essay with weekly reading quizzes that are specific af, go for it. But he does give a study guide very accurate of the test. But Chang's cool. It's just 6am rn and I pulled an allnighter for his final. I'm so done. gg
His lecture is fine, but he is pretty good at torturing his students.
Chang is a great MMW lecturer and is a great storyteller for the material. It is very easy to follow him in lecture and the reading connects to what he is discussing in class. There are 3 essays total, 1 midterm, and 1 final (both with study guides) and grades come down to the TA. Chang is a must take prof for MMW and should be taken at least once
His beautiful tea drinking bald head gives life to mmw. He is the best like A++. Grading depends on your TA but overall it's not that hard to do well. The study guide is life learn it and you will get an A. Also, his extra credit is really random so take notes in class even though he gives you very detailed outlines of his lectures.
Overall his lecture is very clear, the only problem is there is a lot of reading like all MMW courses, and the paper assignment are similar as well. However, he made Trump joke once a week and a professor shouldn't be this political. I didn't want to hear stuff about Trump but he kept making these stupid analogy thinking it is funny.
Pros: Teacher was passionate towards teaching which made the lectures interesting Test questions were straight forward & pertained to concepts in class Cons : Although Test questions were straight forward test grading seemed rather arbitrary Sometimes seemed to make minor mistakes in lectures that could be confusing
a solid professor and I would highly recommend him for MMW. The course itself was actually extremely dense and was A LOT of work, but the lectures were pretty inspiring and you can tell Professor Chang is very passionate about this particular discipline. He cares about his students and always encourages questions. I'm taking him again for MMW 122
MMW was not as hard as people made it out to be, you only have to put in an extreme amount of work at three times in the year for the midterm, manifesto and final exam. You still have to read, but its a light amount and I hate reading. The tests are hard, but if you read most stuff & showed up to lecture it wasnt too bad. I recommend Prof Chang!
Definitely worth taking once in a lifetime. He is such an inspirational lecturer, sometimes made me ponder a lot. Grade is ultimately up to your TA, because they read and grade your exams. Take good notes along the lecture outlines, because then you can elaborate the details on tests. Lots of reading, but try not to skip b/c everything falls back.
this man is the reason why my gpa is not below a 3. he gives graet study guides on mmw and has great/funny stories! i love this bald man hes from syria so he got some real cool experiences. i honestly attended lecture because i liked him as a person and because they were VERY important. at least have friends to give you notes. i love edmond chang
Drop 300 ug LSD and attend MMW 122 class for full effect
Hes one of the best professors in UCSD. He made me love reading and I wont hesitate to take him again. Hes class is very interesting, and hes very inspirational and knowledgeable as well.
He gives A LOT of reading BUT it is compensated by his lectures; because his lectures will stimulate your mind to actually want you to pay attention in class and even do the reading. Even though I am not taking him next quarter, he would be a solid choice for future MMW classes.
Chang is my one of my favorite professors in UCSD. Though he gives tons of reading, his lectures are inspiring and interesting. It's not that hard if you read carefully, go to lectures and go over his study guide before exams. Will definitely recommend him:)
Great professor but terrible examiner. Study guide was not a study guide, just a bunch of terms he has said and/or mentioned. Very test heavy and do not recommend.
Professor Chang is a solid choice when it comes to MMW, although MMW as a whole can be dry his lectures are interesting. He likes to go off on topic quite a bit but whatevers, makes lectures interesting. Papers + Midterm/Finals grades are entirely based on TA grading. Alot of reading which makes this class a bit time consuming.
A really great lecturer, not hard to follow along at all, it feels like storytime. Just hella readings and your TA might actually make you do them...
Love his lectures, he's very engaging and funny although sometimes he can be rude. His tests were very straightforward and easy as long as you studied the very long midterm review sheet.
Chang is a good lecturer and relays information clearly but makes sure not to be too boring. He gives study guides for the exams and that's basically all you study from. Has weekly pop quizzes on the readings, so you actually have to do them. He's more work than other MMW profs but it's worth it
Chang is a great professor (considering that MMW itself is a pain). His lectures are interesting and you don't really need to go to class. The assignments are hard and there's a lot of reading but as far as MMW goes, it's doable.
DONOT be fooled by his seemingly-kindness. Intrinsically he is expecting you to be a smart ass doing the reading but not reciting. since he teaches for quite a while, his materials are repeatedly used, including quizzes. Some people would argue the opposite and find this course hilarious. Not quite. I know a teacher when he really cares about all.
How can one get an A on the final but bcz of pop quizzes get a B. Quizzes are based on 78pg readings that are due & are immensely detail orientated. I would do the readings & still do poor on the quizzes bcz there is no way I can grasp such minor concepts in such little time instead Im trying to understand the whole idea. Quizzes should weigh less
He gave good lectures, however, his exams honestly pissed me off. He expects you to have primarily personal insight on essays, when the entirety of the quarter is just reading and listening to him lecture. Reading everything that he designs is probably not the most efficient use of your time, when cramming the study guide is more effective anyways.
Prof. Chang is a solid choice for MMW. While MMW is an inherently content-heavy subject, Chang is known for assigning an especially ridiculous amount of reading for each class. However, he makes very thorough study guides for each exam, which are similar to the exam itself. He really does want his students to succeed. Funny and passionate lecturer.
Chang is a pretty awesome teacher for MMW 11. I'm not a huge history person so it takes a lot for me to stay interested while listening to a history lecture for 80 minutes twice a week but Chang does a great job. The readings are super long and the quizzes are tough but it's doable. The study guide is hella clutch.
I freaking hate this guy. All he does is give readings and random quizzes on 50+ page readings once a week. The writing Assignments are hard enough, but his lectures and test make this GE Class way more difficult than is necessary. Plus he's super political, even though he claims not to be. It's not lit fam
Lots of reading but one of the best MMW professors out there! Funny guy with the best stories and fun facts ever. His study guides are the secret to acing his class.
I loved him! His study guides are the key to doing well in his class, because they're so similar to his exams. You can tell he really cares about his students and seeing them do well.
Solid choice. Grade based on TA which can suck so hope you get a good one. There's 2 midterms and a final. One big essay due week 10, and there's small writing assignments for it throughout the quarter. 1st midterm 3 parts, 2nd just multiple choice, and final 4 parts (matching, mc, passage ID, and a cumulative essay). STUDY GUIDES HELP A TON DOTHEM
Chang is a great professor, but a lot of your MMW grade is completely dependent on your TA. Chang himself is a wonderful professor who makes the historical aspect clear and understandable. His lectures show you what is important and why through history.
Loved lecture bc he was easy to follow since he uploads a lecture guide so you don't have to rush while taking notes. Lots of reading that I never did, but I feel like if you do most of it this class will be a breeze. Midterms and final are based on how much you study, since he gives you everything in a study guide. Loved the final paper assignment
Chang is an enjoyable, approachable teacher. His lectures are interesting if you make yourself focus. Tests require you to remember a lot about the numerous readings. Gives review guides. Likes questions and discussion. He's a sweetheart, but the class is hard and time-consuming. Take him, become his friend, work hard. Also, sections are mandatory.
Great professor in terms of knowledge. However, you'll spend most of time on readings every week since he gives TONS of quizzes during lecture, which you cannot pass if you don't do the readings. There is even a quiz in the last lecture. If you're a fan of history, take it as you'll learn a lot; otherwise you may consider prof with fewer readings!
Amazing professor who gives amazing lectures. Chang is truly inspirational and passionate about what he teaches. There's lots of work to do with the readings in his class, but I think at the end of the day it's worth it.
Dr. Chang expects you to read thoroughly before coming to class. Every week, expect at least one quiz in lecture (quiz category worth 15% of grade). His tests are among the most difficult in the MMW department but manageable if you read and come to class. Section attendance is near-mandatory. Fun and engaging lectures overall.
Lectures really go over essential content. The death of a good grade in this class comes from missing specific instructions. Attend section, take good notes on each reading, and it's a breeze. Make sure you go over every bit of the rubric. Tests tend to nickel and dime off points, so projects need to bear the burden of perfection for good grades.
This class was just awful. There were times were the material was interesting but, good lord, my TA. Everyone knew that I had the worst TA because they heard horror stories. He will grade your hard worked for papers and criticize out of the rubric. Secondly, he went on a power trip during section. Beware of the TAs.
Great lectures, almost all of your grade is based on the midterm and final (45%) interesting subject matter, but be prepared to spend some nights reading the course reader.
Professor Chang somehow, in a room of about 500 students, manages to make his lectures feel like conversations, and he's pretty funny, too. The midterm and final, however, are serious. It's a LOT of info and a LOT of writing, which can be difficult to prepare for without any quizzes or assignments in between. Overall, though, I'm glad I took him.
Chang is super nice and seems to be really passionate about teaching. The class was manageable and easier than I expected, although the readings were sometimes rough. The weekly pop quizzes were based off the readings and he gave thorough study guides for the midterm and final. As long as you prepare, you should do well in the class!
Your final grade really depends on the TA that you get, so it's really a hit or miss. But! the content of Chang's lectures is always interesting and he includes tasteful, personal stories and experiences that keep the audience engaged. Even if you do attend class, it helps to brush up on the lecture content outside of class as well.
Prof. Chang's lectures were engaging and interesting. However, his reading is much more compared other professors teaching the same class. Your grade is very dependent on your TA, as they grade the exams and the papers. Make sure you go to lecture so you don't miss out on information. You'll get quizzes each week also.
Professor Chang is an amazing lecturer. He's also very accessible to students outside of class and is very friendly. There are a lot of readings in his class which are tested in weekly quizzes but if you put in th effort you will get a good grade. This is an MMW class where you have to work but will also learn lots of interesting things.
He is a great professor overall and seems to be very passionate about what he teaches. Lectures can be boring, but the outlines he provides help if you follow along. It's also nice that he gives us review guides before the midterm and final-- if you study the review guides, then you should be solid.
Prof. Chang is excellent, but MMW is tough. He gives an excellent outline for the midterm and final, but make sure to continuously revise your notes and not to procrastinate because the material is hefty. The research paper is graded harshly. However, Change is friendly, funny, and very caring.
I've had Prof. Chang for 2 quarters of MMW (11 and 15) and he is an amazing lecturer. His lectures are profound and encourages you to think about material outside class and become retrospective. Managing time is a must as there is a lot of reading and not the simple quick reads. Still, would recommend as a professor :)
Prof Chang is entertaining and interesting, but it upsets me that he makes you buy the reader for this class and does not share files or encourage you to buy older editions, always pushing you to buy new ones of his reader which is an anthology of other works by other authors... sus. Hard class, maybe your better off w Herbst who doesn't pander
Ugh! Edmond Chang is the jewel of ERC , no doubt about it. He literally changed my life in MMW 11 and 12 and I highly recommend you take him at least once.
If you get the chance, take professor Chang- he is one of the best professors! He has more reading than some of the other MMW professors, but his lectures and essay topics are very engaging and interesting. I really like the structure of his online class. His office hours are also great- very insightful, helpful, and has great stories.
This is a tough class, and it's necessary for ERC transfers. However, i think he's one of the better teachers of this class as compared to the others. Lots of readings, big assignments (but don't bother much with Chang on these, focus on your TA) and a MT/Final as well. Class is graded not explicitly against one another but... it is a bit.
I liked him and respected him in MMW 13 so I took him again, but when I took 15 was when all the protests and quarantine was in full swing and Chang was not understanding at all. He called us privileged when all other departments were giving out more understanding rules and said we should be able to sacrifice some parts of our lives for some grades
Prof. Chang is fantastic! He's clearly very passionate about the material. The only issue is the sheer amount of reading. The reader is $50, and the # of required readings is crazy (they're not exactly easy reads). As far as the actual workload goes, three total papers (final included) plus a weekly discussion isn't bad! MMW is what you make of it.
Chang has great lectures but they can get a little lengthy. Class is mainly graded on the two essays/final, critical analysis assignments, and weekly discussion questions. Usually lots of reading which can be hard to keep up on. TAs do most of grading which in my case wasn't great as my TA was pretty harsh but I've heard of other people being fine.
Prof Chang is very knowledgeable but his lecture formats can be hard to follow as his power points are a little vague in their points. There's lots of reading to be done for the essays through the course and the final is a full on demand essay.
Prof. Chang is by far one of my favorite lecturers at UCSD! I am a stem major with little initial interest in the history field, however I have taken his class for MMW 11, 12, and now 15, and he has made history interesting! His lectures are super engaging and insightful, and you can tell he is very knowledgeable and passionate about his field.
Took him for MMW12 and MMW13. Both quarters, I was only able to score around B range. This class demands a lot or reading . Lectures were hard to sit through. I was not engaged with his course. I am now taking MMW 15 with Prof Biess and can say that I'm doing much better in connecting with course material and he makes it easy to understand.
Took him for MMW11 and MMW13. His lectures are SUPER long, low attention span doesn't help BUT he is a good lecturer and he's a cool guy. I'd complain about the paperwork amount but I think that's just how MMW is, and your grade heavily depends on your TA, not the professor. Only problem is he assigns too many readings lol but that's all really.
Professor Chang gives amazing lectures that kept my attention even online. His organization of the material seems to flow well with the course's goals, and the lectures often give way to meaningful insights that Professor Chang explores. Overall great professor, could not go wrong with choosing him.
Personally I think Chang is overrated for mmw bc he gives a ton of reading/work. His lectures were prerecorded/boring so watch it at 1.5x speed. Also his essay prompts were weird compared to other mmw professors. Probably the hardest mmw class I've taken yet and your grade depends 100% on your TA so hope you get a good TA.
Professor Chang expects his students to read upwards of 50 pages from both the textbook and external readings before each class. Unlike other MMW professors, Prof. Chang implements a midterm exam rather than a critical analysis essay. You will not pass the midterm without studying the study guide in its entirety and completing the daily readings.
Chang's class is tough, but his lectures are amazing. I would 100% recommend not missing class if you can, though. His lectures are detailed and interesting. He can sometimes go off topic, but his stories are fun and interesting, and help you catch up with your notes if you got left behind. Lots of readings, though.
Professor Chang assigns quite a bit of reading and his exams are extensive. Try your best to not miss class, as so much material is covered in each lecture. He also mentioned that in Winter 2022 for MMW 12, there will be a reading quiz before every lecture. He is passionate about what he teaches and you will get a lot out of his class.
Prof Chang is great. He assigns a lot ALOT of reading so prepare. MMW 11 had no essays however so that was a plus. Only two written exams but a lot of quizzes online based on reading assigned. Very passionate about his class! I loved it. Hes such a charismatic and like able Professor.
Chang is one of my least favorite MMW lecturers at UCSD. He makes rude jokes about students in class in an attempt to be funny but it comes off as insensitive (he made fun of a girl for not knowing what Lululemon leggings were). He assigns an inane amount of reading and expects you to be able to read it all like you have no other classes.
The workload in this class was well above that of the other MMW professors, but for me, I found that the material was worth the effort. Steer clear of this class if you lack sufficient time or have a heavy schedule. If you attend lecture, do the readings, and study Professor Chang's study guides, you will be successful in his class. He is worth it.
Professor Chang is a good lecturer and his lectures are fun and engaging. However, he is the only MMW professor that relies on memorisation and examinations. While other professors required open book essays, Chang's final involved writing a 6-page essay closed book in person with a time limit. MMW could be interesting without Chang.
Be prepared to read lots and lots. Technically the class is doable without doing main readings but studying for the exams is pretty difficult and requires lots of times. Hes a good lecturer to listen to but he does make crude remarks that are mildly racist, sexist, and homophobic. Not worth the effort.
Fun lectures, but definitely a harsher workload and reading list than other teachers. More memorization-heavy, less essay-work. Also, Chang requires you to pay for his own custom textbook, but other teachers provide their texts freely, so know this class has a fee! Def beneficial to be friends with him outside class.
This is probably the only honest review you'll read: Do not take Chang. He makes the class harder than it needs to be which is not worth it considering it is a general ed class!!! Remind that to yourself! Him being an okay lecturer does not justify the fact that he is out of touch with reality, he will make your learning experience a purgatory.
Good lecturer, fun to listen to, could be the best MMW prof if not for absurd readings. Assigns a lot of readings that make the class harder than it needs to be and makes you have to read them. He also gives actual midterms and finals, but they were open note this time. Grade depends on TA. Could rate higher if not for the readings.
Prof Chang's class certainly is challenging, but not if you just read. While the readings can seem daunting, if you just do them then the midterm and final are manageable. Both the midterm and final were open notes. Reading quizzes are frequent, and the grades you get on papers just depends on your TA. Great lecturer who makes insightful points.
Pick Chang if you want to actually learn the course material for MMW. Easily the best prof for covering course content with tons of experience/passion. If you'd prefer the easy A, just pick someone else. That's it. He's not a bad prof just cuz he gives more work and wants you to achieve a broader understanding of the course (that's his job btw).
Professor Chang is passionate about history and cares about his students. If you love history and love an interesting lecture, take him! He manages to make dull content interesting, with interactive and funny lectures. He's also very caring and kind. He gives more work than other MMW professors, but you will learn more in his class.
There is a lot of readings assigned. Grading is dependent on your TA, but the readings are usually very overwhelming. On top of that, professor Chang typically uses a separate course reader that is quite expensive.
As much as I loved going to his lectures, Chang turns MMW 13 which is supposed to be a GE class into the most time consuming class. On top of the research paper which is required for all MMW 13 courses, Chang also gives 2 midterms and a final based entirely off of readings assigned outside of class. Just going to lecture WILL NOT help.
Chang makes MMW content interesting in his lectures but assigns an outrageous amount of reading. Course reader is $40 and readings are LONG and dense and basically required to pass the midterms and final. Chang seems to think this is the only class you will take in a quarter and his workload reflects that. Grade is entirely up to your TA's mood.
I don't know if someone told Chang yet but we are forced to take MMW as ERC students at UCSD. Not all of his students are history majors but he expects us to work as much! He made us read an insanely crazy amount of readings as if we didn't have any other class through the quarter. He is nice (as a person) but LOL that's all i can say!
The inaccessibility of a reader that you have to pay for is unfortunate; many words are distorted beyond legible alongside the font type and size within sources that differ widely and are a complete eyestrain. Chang is a congenial man, but when the course consist of reading to pass, one would think it was perfected.
This is the last time I'll take his class. He makes students read a lot for 2 weekly quizzes that are highly specific. Just knowing the basic concept will NOT do. He called his students "masochists", but he's the only professor for this class. No study guide. Just cramping readings. Doesn't even teach, we learn through readings. T v T Exams hard.
Mentally and physically draining. He complained about not being paid more, while charging us a lot for his reader w readings that we can find online. Waste ~ 6 hours every week on reading. No time for other class. Lots of surprises on quizzes/exams. I hope to catch covid from him cuz he refuses to take sick days after positive. I want to sue.
he be making me cry. crying rn srly. writing this comment to warn future victims instead of studying for my exam. I be overdosing on Red Bull just to keep up w/ the readings. bad vibes in lec. making us wear masks and complains when we ask him for one. he the one getting covid, not us.
Gives 50+ pages of reading for every lecture, most of it blurry photocopies from his mandatory reader, and reading quiz questions are insanely specific. Wastes time during lecture talking to students but refuses to answer questions about readings because there's not enough time for both apparently. Stuck with him as a math major, get me out.
Very engaging lecturer. Assigns SOOOO much reading. An ungodly amount.
He is a good lecturer, but the reading is horrific. There's way too much and we had to purchase the course reader for $40. He could easily post the pdfs on canvas as so many other professors do. Expect a reading quiz before every class and lots of info in every lecture. He's very enthusiastic and engaging in class, so lectures are valuable.
SOOOO much reading. Really quite ridiculous; he wanted us to read a novella in the span of two days after taking a midterm (!!). His lectures are fine, kind of boring, but he tends to go on tangents. The biweekly quizzes were also annoying but doable to an extent.
MMW with Chang is too much. His extensive reading expectations are harsh and his requirement of a $40-60 reader is awful in comparison to his peers. In my experience with him, he lacks understanding and sympathy for the position his students are in and attempts to justify his course load by blaming students for a "lack" of effort or readiness.
Too much reading, extremely annoying for STEM majors. Do not understand why we have to spend more time on this one class compared to other actually useful classes. Definitely do not recommend taking him.
There are not enough characters to describe my disdain for any of Chang's MMW courses. There's just so much wrong with the course from the purchase requirement of a reader, to his midterms, to the amount of reading he assigns. There are so many better, understanding, and welcoming professors in the MMW department...take them instead.
You will fall behind in all of your other classes reading hundreds and hundreds of pages for a GE class. First pass MMW just so you won't have him. Don't make the mistake I did or you will hate your life
A lot of reading from his $40+ reader, 2 midterms, and 1 final in addition to the writing project. You HAVE to do the readings for the exams and weekly quizzes. Exam and paper grades depend on your TA. Lectures focus on context, and are optional and very fun; he clearly loves his job! If you don't mind the extra work and love history, I recommend!
Prof. Chang is an amazing professor. There's no denying that he does give out a lot of reading and we have weekly quizzes (2 lowest are dropped), but he's such a caring prof. I never miss LE because he's able to captivate my attention and sometimes he goes on tangents which I don't mind! Overall, great prof. he's kind, and cares for his students :)
He gets a bad reputation because no one wants to do the readings; the content itself is great. Very heavy workload but his lectures are engaging and the readings are very interesting. He genuinely cares that people are engaging with the concepts and how they affect us. Recommend taking this with someone one you know and splitting the reading notes.
Chang is an awesome professor. He's a great lecturer and is both really engaging and great at explaining the class concepts. The assignments are all reasonable and the exams are all easy. It's really easy to get a good grade in this class. He does make you read things, but they're interesting and not too much. He makes class very fun.
went into this class expecting a train wreck based on other reviews, but to my shock I ended up enjoying all of the lectures and readings...sheesh it's a lot of work but his lectures are low key engaging. would recommend, but def do the readings, would NOT recommend slacking
W class and W prof. ngl his lectures got real spicy throughout the quarter and were worth attending. the weekly quizzes took me out tho because the diligence required to answer the questions was unholy. coming from someone who somehow finessed an A, I would just recommend doing the readings VERY diligently.
This course is a GE course but it is treated like an upper division History course. There are a lot of readings a week and very few lectures so the majority of the content is through the readings. The readings average about 15 pages with about 6 readings per lecture.
Great lectures, but SO MUCH READING! Readings are mandatory for reading quizzes. Up to 100 pages a week easily from his own reader! The money you spend on the reader lines his pockets. Downright greedy if you ask me. Lectures were always good though, but didn't offer much else besides regular MMW curriculum. DO NOT TAKE if you're a STEM major!!
I dont think Chang deserves the poor reputation he has. It was a lot of reading for a summer session but even with working I managed. He also is a pretty nice guy and is passionate about his students and course. It's a tough class but he makes the material interesting.
Although this class was challenging since there are a lot of readings (which was challenging to cram in 5 weeks), he truly cares for his students. I can say that I could not have asked for a better professor for my last MMW course at UCSD. Just be prepared for the weekly readings and reading quizzes and you will be fine. Very kind professor!
Cool and funny professor, but the readings assigned are hell. You will need to treat it like a full-time job because you will be spending more time reading and writing than doing your major classes combined.
Great professor for MMW 13, don't listen to previous reviews. Yes there is a lot to read every week, and yes you do need to make sure to annotate. But the readings are very insightful, and apart from that there is only one essay due. Would heavily recommend the class if you want to learn a lot but is willing to sacrifice more time into this class.
Was worried about the workload but it honestly wasn't that bad. He goes over the readings in class. The slides he shares in class aren't that important, it's what he says about them. Awesome professor and an inspiring class. Take him!
Chang's lectures were very well structured, he really tried to connect on a personal level with his students, and the passion he has is evident. He does make you buy his course reader, though, and his lectures were never recorded which made studying a lot more difficult. The readings were tough and there was a lot per week.
I HIGHLY recommend Chang. Yes, there's a lot of reading, and he gives reading quizzes, but I thought they were interesting (besides Greece - Greece was hard). His lectures aren't mandatory, but they help you understand the reading better. They're also engaging. He gives study guides for exams and as long as you study them, you'll pass.
Mandatory reader and lots of reading from it and the textbook, but it's manageable. Lectures aren't mandatory but worth attending, as he's so funny and really illuminates the course material. Weekly quizzes that are easy to improve your grade with and his study guides for final/midterm give you some of the material ahead of time to prepare.
Be ready for a lot of reading in this class, like over 50+ pages every week. Falling behind is easy, especially if you're juggling other classes. I ended up learning mostly from outside materials and last-minute cramming. He does provide beneficial study guides for both the midterm and final that help.
I think Chang gets a bad rap, but he's probably one of the most interesting professors I'll encounter at UCSD. The class is perfectly completable assuming you actually do the work. I screwed myself over by not doing all of the readings, but if I had done them I think I would've ended up with an A. That being said, I was able to get a B.
His readings were VERY heavy. Online quizzes twice a week for tues thurs lecture, but his midterm and final were very straightforward and easy to understand. He gives a study guide before both exams. It is manageable to do quizzes and readings, but if you fall behind it is still easy to grade well on exams. Lectures were interesting.
a lot of reading but chang is a caring professor and is a kind person. lectures are kind of boring when he rambles on and goes off topic, a bit less engaging than other professors.
Only take if you actually want to read and don't just want an easy A. Readings assigned 2x week ~ 20-25 pages. He genuinely teaches, which means you have to pay attention during lecture (slides for notes don't suffice). Makes you buy $50 reader that he made himself. Engaging and funny lectures, but would not take again due to workload and readings.
Professor Chang was an amazing lecturer. The key is to note down what he SAYS about each text. The midterm is a bit more difficult that the final and the exams were open note so take advantage. It was a lot of work like everyone says but I am actually grateful because I actually learned interesting things. Just beware of time management.
There was a lot of hate on him but I loved this class and came out with an A. Go to his lectures, that's where all the important info is. The TAs are the ones who grade so understand their requirements. Only one essay during the final, and all other assignments are pretty quick
Yes he does assign a lot of reading, but he is a spectacular lecturer and actually explains why the reading are significant. He is also very understanding and cares about engaging his students, highly recommend going to his office hours. The more you actually like your final essay topic the less painful it is to do.
Great lecturer and does a great job finding modern significance in historical events. There are a lot of dense readings but lecture explains them really well. He's super approachable and kind, genuinely cares about the subject and wants students to succeed in his class. If you sit near the front, he will teach AT you (heads up lol).
He has a course reader for every class, its miserably long and the print is tiny. The midterm is multiple choice, matching terms and passage ID's and the final is the same but it has an essay. Your TA will make or break your grade and pay attention to the little funny details he gives in class about himself, it can be on an exam as extra credit.
With all the reading and weekly quizzes, people aren't too fond of his classes, which I understand, but overall he's a nice guy and really does care about his students, I took him as well for MMW 15. He's really not that bad
Chang gives amazing lectures and is very engaging. There are one or two weekly quizzes and LOTS of reading, but you'll probably learn lots. My TA was very strict and graded very harshly, but cared a lot about teaching. Overall, only take the class if you're willing to put work in.
Wonderful lecturer and clearly cares so much about his students. MMW (especially 12) kinda sucks by design but he works hard to make the content interesting and engaging. The reading is a lot and the test are intense, but if you stay on top of everything the class is doable. He means it when he says the test are about preparation, not memorization.
Do the reading, and prepare for the intellectual ride Chang will take you on.
my 13th reason
I took Chang for 11 and I get his lecture-heavy style, but it just doesn't work in 13. He acted like the essays didn't exist and it felt like I was taking two separate classes at the same time, one with him and one with my TA. Lots of reading from HIS book, no recordings, unusual test structure, but a very good lecturer.
Expect a heavy workload, but Chang is an engaging lecturer who makes the dense material digestible. Go to class, use the study guide, and try Unstuck study AI for extra prep - you can get an A if you put in the effort.
Loved prof. chang, such a silly dude, but seriously reading heavy class. Like, 40+ pages twice per week. But he really, at the end of the day, cares more that you understand cause and affect. Tests are remarkably AP adjacent, and overall I enjoyed the learning!
dont believe the inflated reviews, 50 dollar reader for 35 readings that he expects you to read. Bearable if your TA is Thomas Mclamb but the class was just a waste of time, makes themes a lot deeper than they actually are. You don't actually learn much and the whole class just pisses me off. You can either read a ton or cram a ton for the exams
Forces you to buy his course reader. Loads of reading every week. Terrible class.
Hes not a bad professor just a bad class the class just takes up so much time and there is so much work its ridiculous. and he expects us to read so much (40+ pages before each lecture) and a course forum with peer review weekly with quizzes every week. the quizzes aren't hard but the paper and reading is long and bad. will drain you mentally
I know a lot of people like Dr Chang but I personally found his lectures to be SO boring and run on. There is a ton of reading for his class, which can be interesting, but if you are a STEM major with a busy schedule I would recommend taking MMW11R, which will take up a lot less of your time.
Chang's class is very lecture heavy and lots of reading. Easy enough, but lots of busy work and not very engaging.
Great teacher because he really cares about the subject and the content, which leads to informative lectures. Midterm and final were a lot of work to study for and take, but everything on the tests were mentioned in lectures and readings. Heavy reading work that is somewhat difficult to understand because of older English and bad translations.
Chang is solid. He's a great lecturer, and while his class is reading-heavy, the rest of the workload is pretty light so I found it manageable. Quizzes are pretty easy. Chang also gives a great study guide for the midterm and final so definitely use them! He offers a few extra credit questions on tests so pay attention when he tells stories.
the amount of reading is kind of obscene but i ended up finding a happy medium between doing the readings and having unstuck ai help. both tests were really easy since he basically gives you everything you need to know in advance, including essay prompts. my TA was an annoying grader but it really depends on who you get
There's better MMW profs.
took him for MMW 11, expensive course reader, a lot of reading (like to much), ehh study guide, show up do readings u will be fine
the goat, has pet tortoises and good at lecturing
There is a lot of reading. You have the benefit of the weekends, Monday, and Friday (if you have him Tuesday & Thursday), but it really sucks when you have a lot of readings due Thursday and all you got is Wednesday to do them. His lectures are very helpful when interpreting the readings, and are sometimes really entertaining.
As bad as people may view him, his course was genuinely easy to get a passing grade in. He had an open note midterm/final so you don't have to worry as long as your notes are good. As a terrible procrastinator & someone who hates reading & writing, it wasn't too difficult overall. I'd take his class at 1pm rather than an 'easier' professor at 8am.
MMW 11/12 A lot of readings Because i took MMW 11 I was very used to his midterm and final Basically Read, Stay Afloat, and do the study guide. TAs do all the MMW Work
Chang is such an amazing dude. He truly loves what he does and cares for all of his students. He will go out of his way to ask for your name in the middle of the lecture and remember it. I would 100% recommend taking Chang. You get used to the readings, and the overall experience is worth it even with the heavy readings.
Stay on top of stuff and you will be fine. It is difficult but manageable.
didn't attend lecture once and still got an A in the class. highly recommend reading the textbook pages he assigns yourself and then using ai tools to help you trudge through the course reader to make the course load less overwhelming. he basically gives you the entire midterm/final on the study guides so you have no excuse to not do well
honestly mmw 121 was one of my favorite classes because of chang. his lectures are interesting and if you get the right ta, you can totally get an a in the class.
Very difficult class with lots of readings and quizzes for each. You have to pay 50$ for his reader. Nice person with interesting stories, learned a lot from classes. Study hard for tests, but theres a study guide with most info. Mostly Ta graded assignments. Lecture not mandatory, but important for info for tests. No posted slides or vids.
Chang requires a $50 reader of scanned PDFs. ~40 pages of dense reading weekly. Timed quizzes (4 Qs) on reading before lectures. No cheat sheet, but study guides for midterm/final. Tests: multiple choice, matching, passage ID, final adds an essay. Engaging lectures, but no slides/recording so attendance is key. Tough but informative, learned a lot.
Chang does require a lot of reading, but his class is super clear cut. You have a lot of time for essays, and TAs tend to grade really nicely. MT and final require a lot of studying but he gives a super clear study guide, so you know exactly what to prepare. He's a good lecturer, but sometimes gets weirdly distracted and won't finish his slides.
He is not forgiving at all. Your grade is also dependent on your TA. The study guides are provided but there is so much information to memorize. The course could be structured to make it so much easier for you. Get ready to get grey hair early and a receding hairline.
Its like taking 2 classes, one with ur TA one with prof chang, honestly he is a good lecturers, but so much readings (100+ pages a week small font), makes it almost impossible to do them all, quizes on readings, but if you find time do them you will be fine, mmw sucks so get used to it, he gives study guides, got an A in both chang for 11 / 12.
Lectures don't matter. Tests on reading. Confusing instructions for papers. Grades depend on TAs that are a hit or miss. $200 reader that are sources from the internet. Don't think he could pass the class if he took it.
chang is fine but the TAs were brutal. they graded too harshly it being a GE. this class made me hate mmw
If I can pass you can pass
I have taken Chang for all MMW courses. I failed MMW 11 with a different prof, but after re-taking it with Chang, I passed 11 through 15 with minimal struggle. He provides lecture outlines & his lectures are captivating. Yes, there's quite a bit of reading and writing, but all MMW courses have that. As a senior ERC student, PLEASE TAKE CHANG!
Great class passionate lecturer
Lectures are very entertaining, engaging, and information-filled. The grade is comprised of weekly reading quizzes, course forums, a midterm exam, a final exam, a final paper, and section attendance/participation. TA's typically share very clear expectations and instructions for assignments. The midterm and final exams allow unlimited open notes.
He's such a cool dude, you can build such a great rapport w him but BROOOOO THE READINGS ARE INSANE. imo there are too many that it's hard to get a fundamental understanding of any of the readings since there are so many
SO MANY READINGS! Do not take him if you're dyslexic, I had a hard time remembering 30-40 pages for the reading quizzes :( But don't let this discourage you! He is very nice and extremely passionate on the subject, and I'm glad I had him for my last MMW! He's also really funny, and the lectures always keep me entertained! Only TAs matter for grades
Inspiring and engaging lectures. Literally just go to lecture and you'll be fine. He assigns so much reading but you can easily get away with skimming everything. Quizzes are easy and test expectations are very clear cut. Professor Chang is so knowledgeable and really interesting guy.
Chang is the goat!
Favorite professor I've had at UCSD so far. Super caring and insightful. Very inspirational too. Would definitely recommend for MMW 13, 14, and 15 - open-note exams.
I took him for 11 and 12 too. He's an amazing lecturer, very clear and entertaining and he posts lecture notes. There's an insane amount of reading and exams rely almost entirely on the readings, but if you do them and take good notes you're chilling. Lecture attendance not mandatory but helpful, he never mentions the research paper though
Chang is an awesome lecturer and a really funny guy. However, he makes you buy the course reader he puts together full of primary sources and it's a lot of weekly reading with quizzes. The tests were okay, but mainly depend on how your TA grades.
Prof Chang is one of the most entertaining lecturers and overall a good guy. However, I would not take him again because he assigns readings like it's the only class his students are taking. His expectations for midterms/finals are very clear though and he makes great study guides. Overall fun lectures but ridiculous amounts of readings assigned.
Annoying class and teacher
Great prof, is a very caring man. Lectures are extremely entertaining but the amount of reading needed for that class is astounding. Your grade mainly is based on your TA, not so much a prof thing (makes sense it's a writing class), lectures aren't recorded but posts an outline, offers extra cred.Grade is solely midterms & final, and research paper
Chang gets a bad rap but I liked him. Lectures are non-mando, which is why he gives so much reading, but the quizzes are a grade boost if you actually do the readings. CAs are exclusively based on those too, so you have to study less. The research project sucked, obviously, but that wasn't really his fault. He's very reasonable overall.
After reading 500 things in one day, I still have 500 more.
Don't take MMW with Chang, unless you are ready to READ TONS OF MATERIAL, with low printing quality. Lecture is not mandatory, well structured, but useless for midterm /final (use lecture notes rather than primary sources on exam will lead to a auto-deduction from your grade). Grading system is suck, a little mistake in exam would make your B to D.
I have taken Chang for MMW 11, 12, 13, and 15. My biggest advice for incoming UCSD students, take his class because it will prepare you well ONLY if you are willing to put in the work with all the readings. Reading and taking notes on it is so long but doing this will GUARANTEE you an "A+" attend TA Hours because they do the grading for MMW.
Pretty good dude that want's to see success in students undoubtedly, but do not expect to cut corners in class. Not reading and annotating is going to cost you a lot, but overall could be much much worse. It's a course that does not consider that you could be taking other rigorous classes.
The workload in his classes is a lot, especially with the amount of reading he assigns and there are two quizzes per week, in addition discussion is mandatory. Other than that he is a really good lecturer and he preps his students well by providing them a study guide a couple days before the exam. Exams are similar to APWH but memorize readings!
read read read. reading the textbook/reader is 90% of this class. if you actually do it you'll be fine. Chang himself is very likable but his lectures are kinda boring. discussion are mandatory with participation points. its a fairly easy class but just a lot of work if you actually do it
Really good lectures, but there is so much reading to do in the classes. It's super important to actually read EVERYTHING or you will fall behind. Lectures aren't mandatory but please go and TAKE NOTES! Even if it's just copying down what he's written on the slides, it'll help you a ton when prepping for exams without re-reading everything.
This highkenuinely is the worst class I've ever taken. I genuinely have never felt such hatred for history than I have now. The tests are the most braindead things ever created and require 100 hours of studying and for you to remember how kitto wiped his ass. The TAS expect you to know every aspect of the term even when it has no purpose. dont take
i'm only taking this class bc i'm forced to but his tests don't even examine your actual knowledge of the cultures or anything they're just a buttload of studying for no reason like he genuinely just wants people to waste time in his class and he doesn't even know much about the topics he's teaching. he just makes you buy some 50 dollar reader
MMW is just a real messed up thing ERC has to do. There isn't a "better" option between Chang and Herbst. One thing for certain tho, Chang gives A LOT!!!!! OF READING. like, an ungodly amount of reading. Like, 40 pages/week w size 5 font. It really depends on your TA.
Chang gets a lot of flack for the reading, but this class is truly what you make it. He's a very inspiring lecturer and very knowledgeable. Also genuinely care about students in my experience. Participate and ask questions! You can get a lot out of the reading if you really try.
Professor Chang is an amazing lecturer and honestly made taking MMW a little more enjoyable. There is a lot of reading but it is manageable if you space out your time correctly. The midterm was extremely easy as he gives a comprehensive study guide which mirrors the test so you know what to expect. Show up to lectures and take notes on his stories!
He's very passionate about the material and his lectures are quite entertaining. It is a lot of reading but it's manageable - he also gives study guides so the tests are easy (just like AP world). Lecture isn't mandatory but I highly recommend going as it's super helpful since he goes over the reading's key points (so you don't have to read).
Papa Chang is the goat. There's lots of reading and reading quizzes on canvas before almost every lecture, but its manageable. There's a lot of content, but Chang makes everything fun and engaging to learn. Grading on discussion boards, midterm, and final is dependent on your TA, but they grade fairly. Chang >>>> Herbst
Chang is amazing. His lectures are informative and funny and he's a sweet guy overall. There are a lot of readings though and if you struggle comprehending lots of text (like me) you'll struggle understanding the readings. Grades are very TA dependent. Discussions and exams are graded by your TA. So it's a lottery whether you'll get a A or not
Great class, learned a lot (though very time consuming). Attend lectures since he explains the readings thoroughly and you can write those interpretations on the test. I love the integrated humanities approach and I would probably have overwhelmingly positive feelings for MMW if it wasn't borderline torturous for an engineering major to complete.
This class is a lot of reading - like often 30 pages or more. I love professor Chang as a person and his lectures are literally amazing. Even though it required a lot of work, it always felt like if you put in the time and prepared you would do well. His exam study guides have prompts for the essays on them so as long as you study you'll get those.
Evil, evil man. Like yeah "you'll get an A if you do the readings" if you're willing to read ~80 pages a week about phallic monuments in ancient India (on top of textbook chapters). If you don't get off the Herbst waitlist, try your luck next year
Honestly I love Chang. It's A LOT of reading, but easy quizzes and assignments, & INSANELY DETAILED study guide before exams (time consuming but exactly what's on exam). 2 quizzes before LE each week, open note/book, lowest 5 drop. OH established. Really cares about students. Mandatory DI, no LE attendance but vids aren't posted. I suggest go to LE
Chang is so inspirational and amazing lecturer. You will definitely LEARN and be immersed in the material but the homework is actually horrendous. Its like 6 hours+ of reading weekly and a quiz before every class. Despite this, its pretty easy to get an A, so i recommend him
Barely read WTWA and got an A (you don't have to read it, just do course reader and lectures). Only need to do the readings, which are quite a bit. Gives the most clear midterm and final prep ever and if you don't get at least a B on them that's kind of on you, not him or the course. Is a good lecturer and gives extra credit on the midterm & final
Very knowledgeable and underrated professor. A lot of reading, but he goes through the contents of the readings during the lecture, and it helps a lot with test prep. Attendance is not required, but lectures are not recorded, and I don't think you can afford to skip any. Nice guy; tries tries to get to know all his students during OHs.
