Military history was boring taxing and thoughtless.
the class was hard, a lot of reading
His class was pretty challenging, but if you have any desire to learn about hito

One of the best (and smartest) professors i've ever had. challenging, but great
very hard , no joke ... bet great teacher
He is one of the best professors I ever had. He is extremly intelligent and interesting. Bec. of his class I am now minoring in History. Just to warn you his exams are difficult but not impossible.
this guy's awesome personality and sense of humor makes his lectures really interesting, but he's kinda hard, very intelligent
Has a lab.Lot's of material covered on a short test.Essay questions are really taxing.Don't recommend.
Dr. Kallina is a very brilliant man. This is made evident in his rather difficult exams. If you want a good grade in Kallina's class, you absolutely must do the reading and spend time studying for his exams. His tests tend to ask very specific questions.
military history is alot of work and should be only taken only if you have interest in the topic. he's extremely approachable. there's a reason he's head of history dept. and that is his superb teaching skills.
Very good teacher. Knows a lot about history. Shows video clips in class on historical events and wants students to know about history. His tests are hard, especially essays. But if you study ahead of time and pay attention in class you should do fine.
Very hard professor that makes you read boring books and turn in reports on them. Part of his exams are essay and ask very specific questions. Unless you're a history buff or like to study history a lot, don't take him.
Smartest teacher in his particular field I have yet met. Keeps you interested enough to take notes at 10 in the morning, somewhat harder work as far as studying and going to class everyday, but not hard if you have notes and take a few hours to study.
hardest tests ever!!! there are essays that are 50% of the tests and they are impossible. dont take him!!!
US History is not the class to take if you don't care. Most of what he goes over is interesting only if you love your country...your text is dry, and you'll also have to read 2 other books - 1 will be good and the other will be REALLY boring.
He is the teacher you love to hate! You know you will learn, but you must put in the work. I have a history degree and can honestly say that I learned more from his class than any other history class I have ever taken, but it took a ton of work!
Loved his class! Had me awake and interested at 9am! If you come prepared his tests are great, nothing tricky or unexpected. Wish I could take him again.
Discussions are no help at all. However, the class was great...very informative. Tests are pretty difficult, so study your ass off. Essays worth 50%...go to class and learn. Don't be lazy and try to coast through college.
An amazing teacher. I was a doctoral student getting an A in almost everything. Kalina was my first C in any grad class, masters or doctoral. He was tough. Now that I have graduated I want to audit his class just to get it right.
Dr. Kallina has like 280 students but he keeps the lectures likely and exciting. Really makes you feel like you have earned your grade! Very approachable and willing to help, awesome teacher!
worst professor ever. too much work
Excellent professor and very helpful. His lectures are excellent and his knowledge of his courses is superb. He is an upper level professor and you must be willing to learn and work hard and then you will succeed.
For god sakes someone get this guy a speech coach. If you're looking for a good laugh and a hard ass class sign up. If your looking to pass, this is not the class to take.
It depends on your disteacher. He is a really hard professor. Tests are really hard. Essay on all of them, extremly difficult, but your earn your grade. Got a B, but worked my butt off for it, thanx to my dis teacher.. 400pts exams, 300pts dis...
There are 3 books. Tests and papers over all of them, so be ready to work your butt off! and the tests are ridiculously hard. Class attendence required in large lecture; spent more time working on this class, than the other 5 classes I took. Good Luck!
HARD CLASS!!! The tests are very difficult. Lots of extra reading and writing. I always had something due for this class. You better hope and pray you have a nice discussion leader!!!
HARD, HOURS AND HOURS OF WORK EACH WEEK IF YOU WANT TO GET A GOOD GRADE. Check out your discussion teacher before you sign up. Very straight forward but have to work your but off.
He is very animated and loves history. He will keep you awake and as long as you go to class you will be fine.
Not an Easy A, Reading is a pain in the but. Lectures dont do much with tests. I enjoyed Adam's 2010 class. But this class made me hate history. Overall K is an ok guy. The tests are easy for a regular nerd that studies but doesnt read all.
Easy class for those who actually think. I have an A-/B+. Not as good as Dr. Adams AMH2010, but fair enough. Speech Deficiancy. I didn't read a single page of any book, and wrote A+ essays and got mostly B's on the exams. Not highly recommended
Went into the final exam with a B average, came out with an F. Not impressed - thanks for ruining my 3.8 GPA Kallina. Get a decent TA - makes a big difference.
The best lectures I have had. Lots of video clips and such to keep interest EVERY class. If you read the books, take notes on them and class, you will pass the class. TA's are alright. You must read. Tests are fair. Essays toughest part though.
He's awesome! He shows a lot of video clips and plays music before every class. He adds humor and although not always funny, it shows he tries. Tests are very hard though!
Fabulous professor! Very funny, always keeps class interesting. Tests are rather difficult but not if you keep up with reading & use literacy sheets.
he's an AWESOME teacher that gets you interested in HISTORY! and history was always boring to me. you do have to read a lot, but if you read and go to discussion you'll be fine. also really study his "clues" for the test, because they end up being essay questions.
A true teaching god. Very rare talent here at UCF. Makes history fun and interesting with his wealth of knowledge. He gives you lots of help to get ready for the test. Not a class to be missed. If every teacher loved what they taught and did it as well as him the world would be a better place.
A really good teacher- very animated and funny. Tests can be hard, they are over pages and pages of information and the study guide is over 150 terms long, most of which is not on the test. Go to class and listen to lectures...a pretty easy B.
GREAT professor, enthusiastic, funny, very interesting lectures. Quizzes in every discussion class. attendence required! generous with extra credit, no online work, no excuse for a bad grade!
you have to do ALOT of reading, from the textbook and a documents book. gives you a lot of terms to look up, but focus on the terms that come up frequently in lecture. loves history, and gives you a new appreciation for it! If you work hard you can get an A, but if you don't mind a B take this class
he is enthusiastic and nice, but his notes do not pertain to the test. However it is ALOT of reading. Quizzes every discussion on the reading. Tests are difficult if you dont study.ALOT of info on the test. 2 papers on two additional books. In my opinion too much work for a gen ed. not recommended
Mr. Kallina is a wonderful man and he really enjoys teaching the material. he gets very excited and really makes you understand the stuff. his tests are pretty hard though. a lot of terms to memorize and many dates as well. but he really made me enjoy the class!!
ONE OF THE CUTEST OLD GUYS IVE EVER MET! attendance in mandatory, lectures are really intersting - hes funny & plays alot of movie/music clips, if you have a good TA the tests arent that bad - you have to work for an A though.
He is old and studders a lot. Very boring class, hard to stay awake! If you have a good TA the tests arent too bad. He's nice but not a great teacher.
Good teacher. Gets into it. Nice guy. Test are from the notes. Not much reading. I enjoyed him. Its more on the Grad TA's.
Very good teacher. His tests have very exact answers and also contain essays, but if you can get the essays good, then you'll have a good grade. Also make sure you have a great TA because they do the grading so they determine what you get. I got an A in the class when it could have been a B or C
He's a man dedicated to what he does and it's more than obvious that he loves it. If you want to just fly by the class and get an A or B you may want to veer away from him, but personally I loved every moment of his class. The discussion aspect will be your saving grace if you do not do well on tests and the class is reading heavy for a gen ed.
The class is easier than it seems. Dont worry to much about the lecture but go for attendance. Make sure you read for the weekly Dis.Lab quizzes(easy). Do your papers! He tells you whats on the test and your TA will go over it then study. And you should end up with atleast a B. Hes a weird little guy but funny to listen to. Enjoy the video clips.
His tests were nearly impossible (multiple choice and an essay) -- it was the lab session that saved me. But he loves the subject, and really enjoys teaching. Don't take this class if you want an easy A, but take it if you want to learn history. And make sure you do the reading, and go to class, because attendance counts.
most rediculous tests i have ever seen in my life. If you like dates take him. Test questions (m/c and essay's) include things like What happened in the first decade of the 20th century and name the president it happened under (that's straight of the final) and that was part one of a four part question. The dis. could save you but don't chance it.
worst teacher ever, don't take him, his tests are impossible, i studying my @$$ off for this class (i'm a 3.3 student) and i got a D so i have to retake it because his tests are awful, the questions don't even make sence, unless you were around from the begining of the 1900's, i wouldn't take this class.
Excellent professor. He's truly passionate about the subject. His use of videos, photographs, and audio helps breathe life to history. The tests aren't difficult if you follow the study guides he gives. Take him if you're a history major.
dude is crazy, sometimes yells at random moments, keeps you awake. tests are manageable if you pay attention in class and keep good notes.
He's a really funny guy and you can tell how much he likes history. There are 6 paper topics but you only have to do 3 and they're pretty hard and graded by the GTA's. The classes themselves are interesting but his test questions come out of nowhere.. its impossible to make a good grade on them. Overall he's a great teacher but his tests are hard
awesome guy, reminds me of my grandpa. quirky sense of humor, but get the points across. keep up with notes and reading assignments and you will be ok. mandatory attendence, no chances for extra credit. have to write 3 papers with pretty easy topics.
I thought it was easy, especially with his curves. Studied the day before for each test and aced them. 3 Paper topics that are 3 pages max and 2 minimum. Also, I didn't attend class and still did good...so lecture notes weren't that important. Read Chapters.
He is definatly passionate about history and is an easy class if you study. Curves a lot and only gives three tests (not cumulative) and three papers (you choose three out of ten topic choices). Study and write a decent paper and you will do fine.
Great teacher. Passionate about history and makes it easy to pay attention. tests are kind of difficult but nothing too bad.
WORST CLASS EVER!!! AVOID TAKING HIM.. his test are near impossible to pass no matter how much studying you do. His test reviews are pointless so dont even bother attending class that day. If u love reading take this class because they are 3 books required and over 500 pages of reading per test! papers are easy to get good grades on..
Edmund Kallina is AWESOME. You can't help but like the man and he has a good rapport with his students. He has a sense of humor... His lectures are interesting and his tests are easy enough if you study, though the study guides are a little overwhelming. I didn't think I'd like this class but it's probably my favorite class this semester!
Take this man's class! So many funny stories and excellent movie clips that actually correlate with his lectures. He brings history alive and he exhibits great enthusiasm. His make-up policy is a God send... he's human and understands that ppl. need help from time to time.
Great professor, funny and helpful, yet hard when it comes down to work. Do the readings they help a lot especially on tests; but as along as you pay attention in class and take notes your fine.
greattt teacher. loved the class. test came really easy for me and papers came very hard but never anything below a 70. if oyu take this class and have ever watched the history channel for more than a few days you will be fine.
Great professor! Started every class with a video clip about the time period. Very enthusiastic and passionate about history! 3 tests/3 papers but gives you 5 to write and takes the top 3 grades. GTAs can be really helpful and make the class easier.
Extremely difficult, tests consisted of very obscure questions, tremendous amount of reading, enjoyable to discuss subjects with in class but take him only if you have no other choice.
If you go to class and keep up with the reading you can get a B easily. The text book is more important than the other two. Papers are easy. If you like history, its an easy A. Going to class is a must!
I didn't have much trouble with this class. Main thing is to make flashcards of all his test review terms and questions he gives you and study that. He also gives quirky extra credit points if you know random sports knowledge. MUST READ THE BOOKS. He also assigns 3 papers that are due but the grading is pretty lax on them. Good luck.
Hes a funny guy, lectures may get boring but hes definitely not the typical monotone teacher, if you take notes (and pay attention) and keep up the reading you'll get an easy A, papers arent too bad either (gotta write a good paper though)
Just because there are a few people listed with the same name on this site (Edmound, Edmund etc)..it's all the same guy. Read the other reviews. JUST. DON'T. TAKE. HIM.
Great teacher. Has excellent class structure. 3 tests, 3 papers, done and done. Papers are very easy to do, grading is pretty liberal on them so if you write something half way competent you'll get an A on them. Posts test reviews online which are VERY helpful. If you have an interest in history and know your stuff this class is too easy.
Prof. Kallina knows his stuff. The class is really hard though. If you have a hard time understanding politics this is not the class for you. You HAVE to read all the books. 3 tests all 100 pts and a 100pt paper make up your grade. Doesn't leave much room for error. Tests are very hard and reviews never really reflect what will be on the test.
Worse teacher ever! He smart but cannot teach.. his test are way too hard! Point Blank DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! unless you enjoy high stress reading 3 books and writing mulitple papers..good luck
OMG so much reading! Interesting class though, I don't recommend taking it if you want an easy A or an easy B for that matter.
I have been in college 5 years and graduated community college with honers and I have only fail one class in my life and that is his. His lectures are not great but not bad either but HIS TEST ARE HORRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He wants you to know the book like it was your own life story. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Dr. Kallina is probably one of the most brilliant professors I've taken. You need to come prepared for class (read ahead) or the lecture will seem very scattered. Tests are extremely difficult but you can do well if you study class notes and actually do the assigned reading. He is also HILARIOUS which keeps class interesting.
If you have no interest in history or politics do not take this class. His tests are EXTREMELY hard. He gives 5 page reviews for each one. I memorized them all and still had difficulty. 3 100 point tests, and you have the option of writing 3 of 5 papers.
Over 3000 pages of reading (I counted). Long review lists, several hard tests, questions are often vague though he expects a specific answer. A fantastic teacher -knowledgable, funny- but not worth getting a B (if you're lucky), take an easier teacher.
Best history professor at UCF. Not an easy class but read before class + participate bc 20% is participation! That's a test grade. Exams are challenging but fair-do study guide throughout the semester because it is LONG. Once you have it done, 4 hrs of studying and you can pull a solid B-if you can't then you just fail at life LOL
I've had Kallina for AMH 2020 and 3547. He's the best history professor I've had at UCF, and he never gives a boring lecture in my opinion. His grading is very lenient, with room for extra credit. His tests are not hard as everyone claims, IF you do the reading. It's a lot of reading, and I've seen most of my class slack on it. READ. Great prof.
This is an easy B. If you dedicate time to the few assignments on the syllabus you'll do fine. He has TA's grade so grading is hit and miss. There are 5 paper dues dates and you only have to turn in 3. Flexible and moderately easy if you aren't a slacker.
very good teacher. keeps history interesting by never having a boring lecture and being funny. the only issue in this class is the hefty amount of reading
He does take attendance and if you sign up for the Mon Wed Fri, DOES have class on Fri. He does assign a LOT of literature, but the books are not that bad. Three papers chosen from five topics. His lectures are very interesting and has many extra credit opportunities. Reminds me of my grandfather, great professor! Recommended!
I did not particularly like Professor Kallina, mostly because of the TA's. He takes attendance, but it does not count towards anything. Assigns a lot of reading, which is not ideal for heavy schedules. If you have the time to devote to a class, he is perfect, but anything else would be easier.
Best professor Ive ever had. The class itself is somewhat hard because there are so few grades and tests are not extremely easy. But Prof. Kallina never gives a boring lecture and you can really tell he loves his job. EXTREMELY recommended. lots of reading (semi-optional considering i read only what was required to write the 3 papers and got an A)
Couldn't be more unsatisfied with the professor. Test reviews done by TA's (who never know what to cover during reviews) and the TAs grade the paper. I failed the class because of the TA's. I honestly would advise taking a different professor.
The reviews are not very helpful. There is a ton of material that you are tested on. The TAs were extremely helpful if you go to office hours. Study everything. I wouldn't recommend taking this professor though if you can avoid it. I got a decent grade, but not the grade I wanted.
Great professor. TA's do grade everything but they are very helpful if you go up to them. The class is basically the same as what you learn in high school. Super easy. Text required (and read it!). 4 exams and 4 essays. The topics are given way in advance. I suggest making notecards to study for exams.
Unless this class is required for your major/minor, don't take it. Find something else. Rather than "US as a Great Power 1945-present," the class was essentially a Cold War History class. It's not about diplomacy or international aspects, it is made for history majors. There are 5 text books and about 200-300 pages of assigned reading each week.
Pretty good professor altogether. Sounds almost like Gilbert Godfreid, but he makes the class interesting.
Dr. Kallina isvery passionate about history so the class is really fun to attend. He assigns pages to read every week. 3/5 of the papers are mandatory. The grading on them is very hard so make sure you understand what is expected an d go to the GTA's for help. The tests aren't too hard if you study and make sure you know how everything relates.
Dr. Kallina is a very smart professor he just doesn't know how to communicate with students well through his lectures. The GTA's grade ALL of your work. So make sure that you make an effort to stop by and let them know who you are because they will help you out. I went to class most days and got a B
By far the WORST professor I've ever had. His assignments are dirt stupid. I looked down at my notes once and the guy thought I was sleeping and called me out for it. Avoid him at all costs.
Dr. Kallina hammered me big time in the first course I had with him..... in 1977. And I deserved it. He taught me critical thinking at a time when that concept was out of fashion. I had 6-8 classes with him and really looked forward to each one. I ended up being an IT executive but my History degree and those classes with him meant everything to me
TA's were the graders in this class and they graded your test and papers. they were very tough on the papers. I went into my TA and he said it was good, but i got a 50. do not take this class but if you do you will get an easy b.
I loved Dr. Kallina. He gives an easy 15 point extra credit paper at the beginning of the semester, which helps out a lot. His exams are pretty straight-forward and easy. He also includes bonus questions on his exams. He's funny and loves to play videos that relate to the time period you're learning about.
10/10 would learn cool stuff from again. In all seriousness though, Professor Kallina is very helpful, and seems to really enjoy teaching. I feel slightly biased as I was already highly interested in the course material, but he manages to make the class very exciting.
This teacher, very knowledgeable on the topic and gives you plenty of recourses to study from, is very difficult. His resources are good but the amount is impossible to absorb. He tries to give lists of test topics to study but it ends up being scattered throughout the book making it very hard to find anything of use. His papers are hard. Just run.
If you are not required to take this class then don't take it! If you do not have a genuine Interest in American history, do not take this class. There is so much reading that it is hard to absorb all the informantion and the study guides for the exam are not very helpful.
Dr. Kallina was an absolutely excellent professor. The course always remained interesting and I really enjoyed coming to class. Dr. Kallina kept the class entertaining with great lectures. I used the textbook for the first quiz and somewhat for the second quiz, but not at all for the third. The lectures supply enough information for the quizzes.
Dr. Kallina was an absolutely excellent professor. The course always remained interesting and I really enjoyed each class. Dr. Kallina kept the class entertaining with his lectures. I used the textbook for the first quiz and somewhat for the second quiz, but not at all for the third. The lectures alone supply enough information for the quizzes.
If you need an amh credit take greenhaw. The class was very entertaining and I learned a great deal about diplomacy. One thing thing that I will say is that if you do not have enough time to read 300 pages every week then you may want to avoid this class. It requires a ridiculous amount of effort but in the end you will learn a lot.
I really did not like this professor his course was hard.
