he is crazy boring, and you have to read these horrible books that no one has ever heard of and then write rediculus papers about them. and he always talks about how he enjoys sex and women

I wish I would have taken a class with him sooner. The only reason people do not like him is because he is honest & has an uncanny ability to read people. Sometimes this comes off as arrogance, but look past it and it will work to your advantage.

A man with a great sense of humor, and someone who is keeping philosophy alive in the dingy halls of academia. A refreshing break from the politically correct. Not for those who can't take a joke. His insight into human nature is profound. The best.
horrible teacher. anyone who thinks he has insight has probably grown up reading only the backs of cereal boxes. he said he loved my papers but gave the girls better grades. if you value your time- do not take this guy.
He's very honest and even funny, but the books he assigns are horrendous. He wants you to write papers by guessing what is it that he thinks about the topic and not what you think. Don't take him!

I thought he was a great teacher, refreshing & made philosophy intersting with his book assignments. I would highly recommend him.
This Professor is horrible.Took him during the summer.Made us buy 5 books, and we didn't even use all.We had 4 papers due, not enough time to finish them.His grading method is ridiculous. He wouldn't give letter grades, instead wrote "Ok" or "Not Good".I DO NOT recommend.He does favor girls.
this is a tricky class....he gives a RIDICULOUS amt of work and rapid fire paper assignments, however he is a good teacher. He expects a lot (prob bc he went to harvard). If you have interest in philosophy and want to work take the class or else steer clear. He also does favor girls.

Just bad, really bad. He doesn't tell students much about their papers, so your final grade is a major surprise. I thought he was a cool guy unti I received my grade. If your thoughts are different from his it will just hurt you in the long run. For a 100 level class, it is not worth it.
awful! he is so bad.....my goodness i cannot stress it. My final grade came out to be a suprise. I took him my freshman year and he gave me the chillz..i thought that that was how most college classes was like. Do NOT TAKE HIM WARNING!!!
worst teacher i ever had, first essay i ever did in the class, he said his going to fail me, i can't rewrite nor can i do extra credits, not friendly nor helpful! stay away from him!!!!! he desirve the worst teacher award.
Unclear lessons, pokes fun at people (uselessly), is the "walk in, open book, blather on and on, say "you understand?" at lot, assigns a paper, then walk out" kind of professor. We just got a 1500 page paper due in one week, and the details were anything but clear. Avoid his purposeless classes.
Unreal... i couldnt believe it. I fell asleep almost every class. He drops a 1500 word paper bomb on us (due in one week). DO NO TAKE!!! You have been warned.
He got his education at harvard yale and princeton..but there is no evidence of it.. he grades the papers.check..check plus.. check minus..made us buy 5 books like 600 pages each and expected us to read one whole book in 2 weeks..his ego is so big i dont know how he can fit his head through the door

DO NOT TAKE! the worst teacher in queens. All he does in class is read passages from the books that has assigned, he doesnt explain anything and expects you to write a 1500 word essay about the book. He is full of himself and you are better off not taking this class... you will get nothing out of it except a bad grade!!!

Warning........he is the worst professor i have ever had. Umm...what can i say. BEWARE!!! i wish i knew how bad he was before i signed up for his class. i couldn't wait for the semester to end. He was sooooo boring and difficult. He seems very self centered and is not open to others' opinions.
Leites is an awesome prof. Yes it's true, no syllabus, no structure, papers R difficult & discussions R off the wall, & yes everyday he does discusses books being read & then some, but 2 hell w/structure and formality. Just actively put yr 2 cents in, try 2 relate 2 what's being discussed, & write yr papers. Y'll B fine, he has a wealth of info.
I do not know how he was hired, no syballus, no tests, no homework, text in french which noone understands, 1500 papers about what nobody knows, does not give grades for the papers so you have no idea how you are doing and is completely horrible...i had to drop him because I could not stand him and my GPA is 3.9. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! HORRIBLE!!! AHH
this is the worst professor. he can't teach at all. if he was ur final choice don't take him... wait till the next semester. our class started with 60 student after 4 weeks it only had 20 students.

I can't add very much to all the "bad, bad, bad" descriptions by other students, except to say that they are true. A confused and offensive person who seeks to confuse and offend his students- there is no way on Earth I would recommend taking his classes, even tho i usually enjoy fresh ideas. His ideas are not fresh, they're absurd,&so is the work

Don't take this class if you can't author one original thought. Just be like the average, mediocre queens college student and take an easy A class. We all know that real work and effort never gets anyone anywhere in life.
ok, everything u've read b4 this comment is true, however if u really look beyond that u'll c that he is really different from all the prof. that u had b4. He introduces discussions that u've neva heard in a classroom and prob never will, which is a good experience on its own. Take this class if u're tired of the everyday, and want something more!
When i read the comments about this professor i was a little worried about taking the class but figured it couldnt be that bad...how WRONG I was! The other student comments are right on the money! Oh come on guys..he's not THAT bad. He does give alot of essays, but if you read the books, you'll be fine. The essay questions are reallyy broad so you could say alot about it. And even though he says 1500, he doesn't penalize if it's shorter. I gave him 700, 800 words and it was fine. He's funny, I liked the class. I got a B+

Leites is a very interesting prof. His classes are stimulating, his thoughts are original, and encourages participation. If you are like the average Queens student and are lazy, you will not like this class: It requires a lot of time for reading and writing (so far 7 1500 words essays, although he doesn't care that much about the amount of words.)
edmund is the worst teacher in the world. He is offensive, rude, and completly out of touch with reality. He judges everyone in class and put people down left and right. After my first paper he asked me of i knew any one in my family who spoke english. His grading system is a joke. I would never advise anyone to take this class.

If you can't take the heat don't walk into the kitchen. This class is not for everyone, and that's what I like about it. I learned a lot, wrote a lot, and fully enjoyed the class; though I see why others hated it. If you're interested in sex, lit criticism, have a philo background, hate conventionality, then this is heaven. For the rest, hell.
Openly ****, borderline ****, disregards any formal philosophical aspect of the course, holds his poetry selections to be closed to interpretation, wastes incredible amounts of class time. Fortunately the truth is all I have to say to get my point across here.

A keen observer of human nature. If you want a lesson, nay,a methodology in discerning truth it will do you well to take his course.
great professor really enjoyed the class.. a little to many papers, but he is such a great professor, a bit of a perve, but at his age it's hysterical, realisitc and truthful, best professor I have had in 3 years..
I don't know how he is for other classes, but if you take his literature class you will learn nothing. There is no discussion of the texts he assigns aside from whether or not you liked reading it. WASTES TIME - I cannot stress that enough...avoid at all costs.
I don't recommend this professor at all. Too many papers, does not explain anything. he doesn't even teach about philosophy, he mainly focused on poetry, such as Pindar and Virgil. He shows up late all the time, and he waste class time all the time.
This is not a philosophy course its more of a poetry course. You have to write a 5 page paper on a poem after each class. He reads both the german and english texts to all poems. Class is very boring.
Classes were boring. Spent my weekends writing essays but he doesn't give useful feedback on them. You wouldn't know your standing in class, it's useless to ask him. He might get interested knowing your personal life story. His discussions makes sense though. He's a nice guy, makes 'pervy' jokes sometimes. And he curses in class. A lot.
Quite unique professor. He either likes you or not. Class participation matters more that papers, but in the mean time do not underestimate the importance of a good paper. He appreciates your insightful analysis of the readings that he assigns, both in written and in verbal forms. You have to have your strong opinion and arguments to support it.
My favorite prof. I loved the different dynamic of the classroom. Interesting discussions. Sometimes it's better not to listen to all the negative things students have to say about their professors. I'm very happy I took his class.
Your grade in this class basically comes down to whether or not he likes you, no matter how many of his papers you do. He gives about 3 essays a week but they aren't graded. He doesn't give tests either. Your grade really does depend on him liking you.

This guy is the man. He will talk forever, literally. You will write about 25 long papers on the reading. But get this, you don't actually have to write about the reading, I just wrote funny short stories all the time, and he loved them haha. He will give you input on your papers. Make sure he likes them, and stick to that plan. Very challenging A+
So he teaches to hear himself speak. He assigns one book and you have to write papers on it every time you show up. He is a genuine guy. This class isn't hard but it's annoying. Easy a if you show up

This professor does not consider anything else but participation. Shy? Don't pass. If you do plan on speaking, make sure you analyze fully because he will tell you how you are wrong or you are not educated enough to take a philosophy class. Classes are an hour and 15 minutes long, but majority of the time he is rambling on about his life.
Why is he still teaching?
TBH one of the worst philosophy professor in QC. Always try to crack jokes thinks that he is funny,and does not have any grading standards.

Honestly one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. No HW, no Exams, just readings and talking. If he did give anything to his other classes, probably just papers based on the reading. He's an opinionated man but honestly no one smart cares. Just let him rant and take the free A by showing up to class

In the first day of class he promised that we would receive an A as long as we showed up to class. He kept his promise. No participation. No homework. Made us buy a book, we didnt really use it but he will check if you have it. He would read a small paragraph and then talk about his life. Guaranteed A if you just show up.
