Don't take this course if you're not interested in Latin America. A TON of reading, and a lot of marks given for participation in tutorials. Can be boring and easy to tune out, but a nice professor. Expect at LEAST 8 hours of reading per week.

Excellent prof, I learned a ton from this man. But be warned -- a lot of reading and he marks papers much harder than most profs at York. Gave me the only d+ I ever got. But, it was also the last. Good course overall.

a Very interesting man. he presents ideas that are different yet make sense. he is also very clear about his expectations and is totally willing to help. his lectures are interesting and you'd never wana fall asleep in those. he's hot!

I wasn't interested in this class at all before I came, and it turned out to be the class I not only learned the most in, but LOVED the most...what an incredible prof...don't expect to get stellar marks cause he's challenging...but SOOO worth it!!

He is an excellent professor, I would say that he is the best prof I´ve had so far. He explains really well, shows you different points of view and he even threw a party for as at the end of the year. Really great guy, really great prof, learned a lot

This Professor is great, easy to talk to, very clear in his lectures, one of the best at York. The course itself is not easy but you will learn valuable info. He marks hard but fair, its not easy to get straight A's but you will learn alot. I loved this course

Very good teacher. Made complex material easier to grasp. Sometimes rushed through things that would have been more helpful if explained, but, for me at least, that was taken up in tutorial. Know his stuff.

He's really good in terms of explaining the course material but sometimes he makes off-handed remarks such as his water bottle would be considered holy to Catholics...that's pretty ignorant..but otherwise he's clear and knows what he's talking about

This professor is the best I have ever had. he is very well organized and clear. He is friendly and approachable and is always up for debating any issue. if you disagree with him, say so. he will respect your point of view and never make you feel dumb or bad about speaking your mind. while his classes are fun, they aren't easy be prepared to work!!

Phenomenal prof. Class has very intense subject that covers a broad spectrum of subjects, yet he manages to explain it clearly and in an interesting manner. Has a good sense of humour, even at 830 in the morning.

Not the easiest class -- but he presents everything in a clear manner, and in a fairly unbiased form (unlike many profs and TAs). It is a lot of material to cover, and not the easiest - but he makes it interesting and worth it

One of the best profs ever!! This class is amazing...an eye opener...and even if its 8:30 in the morning, its interesting...the course itself is somewhat hard... my T.A., Leandro was fabulous...hard marker, but just so immensely knowledgeable and hot too ;) just fantastic!!

His accent is not a problem, it probably helps as it generates occasional humour. He cares about the students and about the subject and this comes out in his teaching. Not an easy class, but I went into it with minimal knowledge of the subject and came out of it considering it as a major. Nearly the ideal professor.

He is one of the best profs ever :) Im so glad that York has this kind of prof. His lectures opened up my eyes and some of the things he addressed in the class really changed my life. Studying for his class was never a pain because the course materials are really interesting! the best prof in the social science for sure!! ;)

Great sense of humour. Seems very approachable, although I haven't needed to speak to him yet. Makes expectations very clear. Does not post slides online because he says we need to learn to take notes, but very clear and easy-to-follow lectures. Does not tolerate latecomers. If you're not on time, you have to stay at the back of the room.

this was an amazing prof as well as an amazing course. the course is not an easy one and a lot of long and hard readings are required, however prof canel as well as the TA's did a very good job at presenting the material, if your looking for a interesting foundations course, this is definetly one you should take

Best professor ever. Funny guy, interesting views, approachable and friendly. Wicked accent, and his tagents are interesting and sometimes comical. Hates latecomers, dont be late, or you will recieve the death stare. The class is awesome, if you want to view the world differently, take this course.

Does not tolerate lateness. Very helpful in clarifying course material. Does his best to keep lectures interesting, and has a great sense of humour. Exams are VERY writing intensive, but not difficult if you study before,and manage your time during. Make sure to watch any videos he shows and avoid skipping lectures wherever possible.

Although he seems slightly biased, he is very clear and knows what he's talking about. He does have rather high expectations of his class in essays and exams. The reading material is interesting and educational and so is he. I repeat, he knows what he's talking about. It's too bad my TA doesn't.

This course was more interesting than I anticipated it to be! The course material is very good, and if you know how to write a REAL essay, then you shouldn't have problems at all writing in this class. I would recommened it to anyone because I think it helps alot in understanding the existing constructs of the developed and developing world today.

Exams are definitely an exercise in time management, especially the in-class one. They're not necessarily hard, but it's hard to finish AND do well. Lectures are interesting, although a little reliant on videos toward the end. Explains everything clearly. Assignments are fair. Second half is more interesting, since it talks about concrete issues.

He is a very intelligent Professor, knows his Job and does not entertain nonsense in his Lectures. Always keep time. But all the Male TA`s he work with. bheee..! They are all....You can throw`up. They know nothing and pretend to know it all. Sorry if i`m a little snarky. He needs to be interviewing his male TA`s before hiring them.Course is great.

must show up on time! lateness is badd. good prof. nice guy. must keep up on readings. most difficult first year course by far. dufficult marking, so you must be passionate and work extremely hard to get some decent marks. :) overall the course was interesting nonetheless.

Amazing Prof! Amazing class! The material is very interesting but you need to either have decent knowledge on the subject or do the readings. The key is to get a good TA, they are the ones who give you the grade.

My class was an 8:30am class. SInce his overhead notes are conscise and clear, it was easy to catch up. But YOU HAVE TO ATTEND or else you willb e lost. The corner stone of your success is really, the right T.A. Makes the world of the difference with all the concepts used. Time management in exams is key!

Amazing prof, make sure you attend the lectures because the course does not have a website. Very clear and helpful, his lecture notes are really good as well. Overall, one of the best profs I have ever seen.

A great prof, excellent at conveying concepts and keeping lectures interesting. Passionate. Approachable. Maintains a near-authoritarian approach towards late students. Course had a few substantial readings, though readings were not overly complex. Lectures brought ideas behind readings together and addressed underlying themes and the bigger pictur

Even though the class was earlier than I normally like, it was worth waking up at 6:00 am for the long commute to school. Canel is a great lecturer and the material is very interesting. However, don't show up late and make sure to attend every class!

The best prof I've had. Simply amazing- would recommend taking another course he teaches . He presents the content in a manner that is simple, yet detailed. Keep his lecture notes for future references if your in international development, because it comes in handy!

Eduardo is the best professor I have ever had! His lectures are incredibly well organized and he puts important points on the projector so make sure to write them down! His TAs are also amazing, I had Tim MacNeill and learned so much from him! Also the intro to IDS course is soooo useful for future courses in most social science degrees.

Extremely passionate about his subject matter, intelligent and a great lecturer. He is the best professor that I've ever had. He would always start his classes with music that the student brought for him. Professor Canel has exceptional teaching quality.

OH my God i have no words to describe this prof. Seriously he is an angel. He is the best professor ever. I love his teaching, his talking he is so cute and has meaningful lectures oh my God i have never seen a person on this earth like this prof. To be honest he is a real Angel. i would rate him 10/10 perfect prof .

AMZING PROF! He explains concepts clearly, and keeps course material relevant. Keep in mind though, that this is a hard course, and you need to constantly attend the lectures and do readings. The payoff though is worth it! He is one of the best professors that I've had, and it would be so sad if you miss an opportunity to be part of his class.

This prof is very tough and strict. If you are late by a minute for lecture he wont let you enter! His marking is extremely strict. Cant understand his accent. He does not put up slides for review at a later date.

I guess this is because it is a social science class, but I notice that he fails to mention that everything he says is just based on opinion, not fact. Him, together with his TA's treat lecture material like facts, which is quite laughable coming from someone who isn't in social sciences.

The lectures were plain and simple to follow. However, your grade depends on you showing up to class, doing the readings and maintaining a good relationship with your TA. The readings are a bit difficult if you are a first year in my opinion so you really need to work hard, ask questions and attend office hours in order to do well.

This class was by far one of the most interesting, and helpful classes of my university career. Professor Canel is punctual (with many professors are not at this university) and does not just convey his opinion, he offers both sides of the argument. Go in with an open mind, and you will definitely leave enriched, educated and enlightened.

not a fan of him at all! i suggest you do not take this cause it is not easy & if ur looking for a class that will boost ur GPA this is not the class. He listed almost 70 topics to study for the exam but only 10-15 were on it. He is VERRY boring & i always fell asleep in this class but if u do take this class NEVER MISS A READING OR A LECTURE!!!!!!

One of the best classes I took in first year! The content was interesting, and the prof and TAs were helpful and friendly. Workload was bearable, and focused on readings! But overall an awesome course & prof with a sens of humour

Really enjoyed this class, it is very hard and very dense, but you learn a lot, i have taken away so much from this first year course, i would suggest anyone to take it, im in special ed and was able to pass with a B so if you work hard you will do great :) was a very nice prof and very informative !

I loved Professor Canel. He treats his students in a great manner and is very helpful. He is an extremely fair person and will go to great lengths to make sure his students understand the material.

Eduardo is one of the best profs at York, he really knows his material and his lectures are very interesting, clear and insightful but in order to do well you need to put the effort. Loads of readings especially for a first year student, so if your looking for an easy A do not take this course!

This prof is still by far one of my favourites! His lectures were inspiring, interesting and full of valuable information. I fell in love with the study of IDS following this course. This course requires plenty of participation and reading, but you will gain so much from it! Highly recommend!!

If you show up late, he will call you out. That being said, I found the course context interesting, but sometimes depressing. Not a bird course at all. Sarah is the best TA for this class.

I loved professor Canel! I found his lectures to be very good and he relays the information and main themes in a clear, concise, and easy to understand manner. His personal and professional background is also quite inspiring! I have to say this was one my favourite classes at York U so far and I took away so much from this course.

I was given a choice to select btw two. However, the moment, the prof spoke I said I will take him. He assumes things abt the students even abt the ones who has never taken his class. Will become your friend when he sees something in you.

A treat for people who want to break the hegemony of pseudoscience like Economics. Come and join him. Will open the door of a new world on students where they will learn how to protect themselves from predators in NGOs, media houses, and other places.

Eduardo was the best professor I had in my entire university experience, I took 1430 and then 4608. I found his lectures interesting and engaging compared to all my other courses. But something that stuck with me the most is how much care and compassion he had towards students - Eduardo is one of the reasons I was able to make it through undergrad.
