Contreras's history class was a bit disorganized for my taste and goes by a very conventional lecture/powerpoint slide type sessions. You definitely have to get ready to take a lot of notes in this class, which contributes greatly to all the exams. Nice guy though, very helpful, although can get a bit repetitive. Easy class, if you do the work.
I really liked him!He uses videos to illustrate a point which makes the class fun!He lectures but often says what you need to take notes on and what u don't need,so it's not that bad!His exams are very straight forward and easy! It's history-don't expect smth groundbreaking but I think he is fun and nice (wants to know every student's name)!TAKE HIM
This class tends to be boring at times, but its a pretty easy writing intensive. Two essays, two tests (you can use one page hand written cheat sheet). He's really nice and cares for you. I had a meeting with him for extra credit and he was very easy to talk to and even said if I needed help in the future I could go to him. Recitation is mandatory.
He is the best lecturer I've ever had. Going to lectures are A BIG HELP. has like 6 slides for each lecture but it contains a lot of info - which he gives in the lecture - on the ppt itself just terms with no def. review sheets are basically the test he lets you bring a cheat shet because he knows your going to know a lot by the time you finish.
He is an amazing professor. I love his class and lecture. He really makes everything clear and explains very well. He does require attendance for discussion (sometimes lecture). He's friendly and helpful. He loves questions from students. The only thing is his test can be bit hard, depending on your TA. His rubic of grading is strict
I enjoyed Professor Contreras' class, but the semester was completely ruined by the T.A. - Ms. Harrison. This woman doesn't know how to teach and her grading methods are absolutely ridiculous and simply don't make sense. Other than that, Contreras is pretty interesting, attendance is optional, 2 exams with cheat sheets allowed.
The Professor himself is fantastic. Very clear and fair. Makes an already easy subject easier. Perfect for Freshmen. However, the TA I had (Harrison) was very unfair. She graded exams and papers very unfairly by taking points off for missing petty details. Made the class harder than it needed to be. Avoid her.
Professor Contreras is a really chill guy. Sometimes his lectures put me to sleep, but the exams are BEYOND easy because he tells you every questions that will be on it. But he doesn't grade them, the T.A does. I had Kat Mahaney, and she was great. Our discussions were always interesting and she graded all my work fairly.
Professor Contreras I hope you see this and realize how much everyone who had Ms. Harrison as a TA feels at this point. Her teaching methods are those of an elementary school teacher, and her grading methods do not make any sense. She didn't go over a single thing in class, yet gave us all C's and D's for missing the slightest details.
Contreras is an amazing professor. His exams are extremely easy. He allowed cheat sheets for the exams. The TA I had was Rosenbloom and he was inconsistent. He tells us that we just need to write the write main points but then he takes off major points. Discussion was really awkward cause no one participated but he doesn't force you to participate.
Everyone who had Harrison as their TA hated the class because the lady is horrible at grading. She is very inconsistent. The professor himself is not bad but he should choose better TA's. Harrison should go back to Ohio and stay there.
Professor Contreras is okay but he tends to repeat the same crap a lot. The worse part was having Harrison as my TA because I agree with the comments made by other people she is horrible at grading the tests and essays. Change TA's if you get Alisa Harrison as your TA.
I must say that he is a great professor. There is a lot of reading, but all of the class discussions were well thought out, and he explained what was going on. The semester started out slow, but as it progressed the topics were really interesting and I got into it. Just do the reading, say a few things in class, and it should run smoothly.
He is very smart and its an easy A. He wants to help you pass. He gives you the review sheet in advance. Easy exams and even though he talks a lot, you have to come to every class and participate or else you will not get your desired grade. It was a pleasure being in his class but it was long. He did not dismiss the class till the last minute.
If you take class seriously this is an easy A. Allows cheat sheet for exam and you know exactly what to expect. He takes attendance and will give you a higher grade if you participate in class. Very likable guy unless you use a cell phone or exit before class ends: he will notice and call you out on it. Very fair grader, I would take him again.
Good professor. He likes it when his students participate and cares to see them doing well. If he sees you are doing something wrong he will definitely let you know. His lectures are long, but you start getting used to it, same with the readings. If you have a 3 hr lec with him bring a snack and water. He isn't boring, but you can get tired...
There are lots of great professors who teach HIST 152: Haverty-Stacke, John, Rosenburg, Brenes, etc. I highly recommend those professors.
He cares a lot about his students. I did not do well on a midterm and he really made sure I passed the class!
My experience with him was very unpleasant. I took the class as a prereq to a masters, and he conveyed a disdain for any preexisting knowledge in the course. Angry & brooding are my feelings for him. He took opportunities to make people feel bad in class which was unfortunate and a morale killer. Knowledge alone doesn't make a good teacher, sadly.
Allows you to use a cheat sheet for your tests, lectures are pretty boring because he's just telling you information from a powerpoint. However, you have to listen in class otherwise you'll miss important information.
He's an elitist and is only pleasant w students who speak a lot. In a class of over 50 students he expects EVERYONE to participate A LOT. If you don't he ices you out. You need to listen in class because a lot of the exam material comes from what he says only, not the cheat sheet or the book. Also, its what he says, or the highway.
An EXTREMELY tough grader. It's worth mentioning that on any assignment you are NOT allowed to use sources other than the textbook and his lectures otherwise it will be considered plagiarism. Isn't clear about how the grading is being done and when it comes to the exams, which are essays, you have to be VERY specific. Wouldn't recommend at all.
EXTREMELY TOUGH PROFESSOR! He is unapproachable. He doesn't explain how he grades your exams and then we lost points if we didn't have the exact points that he wanted (exam was 3 short essays and a doc. analysis). AVOID AVOID AVOID
Professor Contreras is an amazing professor. The class size is huge, and yet he takes the time to remember everyone's names. He gives 2 tests (which you can bring 1 cheat sheet to), and tells you the questions he will ask (they are essay exams). He also gives one essay. Some negatives are that the lectures are long, and you have to take good notes.
Tough grader expect a lot of discussions
He was a good professor. His lectures were interesting and he cares about what he teaches. He notices good students even in a lecture class. You get the essay questions before so the tests aren't difficult. Overall, it was a good class and he was a good teacher.
Boring class. His lectures himself everything was just so boring. FTB I think mostly the fact that he calls you out for taking notes made no sense to me.
picks fights with students and hung up on gotcha details. he has a bad attitude, fixated on rote memorization. would not take again.
An EXTREMELY tough grader. It's worth mentioning that on any assignment you are NOT allowed to use sources other than the textbook and his lectures otherwise it will be considered plagiarism.
Possibly the worst proffesor I have had during my college experience. Gave me an extremely hard time when it came to my office of accessibility needs. As alluded to, any outside source is considered plagiarism. Doesn't allow students to take notes by computer which was a huge issue for me, considering my handwriting disability. Awful all-around.
His grading is tough because it is a writing intensive course. He allows one page of hand-written notes front and back on his exams (2) including 3 essay questions and a document analysis. He also gives one essay assignment. If you don't hit 99% of the details, you won't receive an A. Participation matters and extra credit is given. Take advantag
He is a passionate professor. and cares about history. He posts the essay questions around a week before the test and he allows you to use 1 page of handwritten notes. There was a midterm, a final and 1 essay. He gives lots of information during lectures and the textbook for lecture was unnecessary, but for discussion it was.
You'll love his lectures. His voice is loud and clear. Unfortunately, he's an extremely hard grader.
using only the slides alone will not be useful. gives very specific details on the topics by word. he knows his stuff very well, is careful of offensive terms which i appreciate. he announces the essay prompts before topic so you know what to take notes on. if you take notes on what he SAYS in class, youll have no problem at all acing the essays.
He made it purposely difficult to get an A and was very rude in class. If he catches you with a phone he makes you sit up front in class and takes away your review sheet privileges which is so elementary school. He does give you the questions in advance for tests and lets you write notes to use on the test but he wants a response that's perfect
Tough Grader wants specific details from lectures and textbook. Allows you to bring a sheet of paper to exams (exam questions are revealed a week prior). NO electronics or talking. Dont be late HE KNOWS EVERYONE despite the large class number. Ask questions at the end. Dont sleep! He sees all!!!!
Very tough grader, looks for very specific answers without budging. Very inconsiderate to the students, has no respect for them. If you can take someone else don't take him. Gives you the essay topics before the exam but still expects specific responses.
Great Professor. He loves history and is very passionate about it. His class is solely lecture based. There is a midterm and final and one essay. The questions as well as the answers are given out during the lectures. And you are allowed to bring one page of handwritten notes (you can basically write your essays) for the exams.
take good notes as they will help you since majority of lecture is based on him speaking rather than following the powerpoint. clear and well knowledgable about what he speaks on. 1/2 textbooks are required since the lecture is combined with a discussion class. def be VERY detailed and specific on essays + midterm/final!!
Professor Contreras is a very strict professor however, what makes him an amazing professor is that he is always open to discuss if you have any questions or if you're struggling with anything. I guarantee, once you take his class, study hard, and follow his feedback on papers, any other research intensive class will be a piece of cake.
Grad level class. Participation was worth half our grade, yet he spent the most time talking over us. He's knowledgeable, but he does not lend himself well to a grad level class. His grading was very harsh on everyone. A participating 5-6 times per session/ conforming to his writing style. Good guy, friendly, take advantage of office hours.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. HE DOESNT SEEM TO CARE AT ALL IF A STUDENT NEEDS HELP OR NOT. WE TAKE HIS EXAMS THINKING IT WILL BE COVERING WHAT WAS LEARNED IN CLASS AND HW. INSTEAD, THE EXAMS ARE NOTHING THAT GETS COVERED IN CLASS. HE WILL TRY HIS BEST TO GIVE U A HORRIBLE GRADE ON HIS EXAMS, DOES NOT GIVE THE STUDENT THE RIGHT TO VOICE THEIR OPINIONS.
He cant teach whatsoever. Extremely tough grader without any concern for his students. Even his TA admits that he is very strict and dont have any wiggle room. I tried my hardest and got to the point where I completely gave up and stopped caring.
He cannot teach. Idk why hunter bothered hiring a professor who does not connect with students at all. Should get fired honestly.
He rlly doesnt care about his students at all. Cannot teach and doesnt prepare us for any of his papers.
Even though I did learn a lot from him and put in many hours of work, my essay grades do not reflect this. I am accustomed to writing heavy classes and my papers have been used by past professors as examples for their current students. I have never received grades this low on assignments I worked so hard on. Take literally any other class or prof.
save yourself time and find a better prof. This person grades very harshly and is very bias against students . Very rude and always sounds like he's threatening you if you disagree with whatever feedback's he gives you . His rubric for grading is very bias and if it doesn't fit his standards he's just gonna give you a low grade. worse Prof. ever .
Attend the class and recitation and you'll pass. For anything else make sure you take your time doing the assignments
Honestly the worst professor experience I've had. Biased against students deplorable grading. Someone fire him.
The guys a tough grader. But I've learned a lot. If people are complaining bout their grade that mean you did not properly answer the question, made grammar mistake, or did not participate in the discussion. Everything is on the syllabus and he has the right to grade you based on your work.
Professor Contreras is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He has a very specific grading criteria that he does not inform you of beforehand so even if you understand the material and reflect on it accurately you can still get a bad grade if it does not meet his specific standard. He is also incredibly rude and unnecessarily strict.
Among all of the professors i had, he is my favorite. His class is pretty hard and needs a lot of studying but I thought that the work was pretty reasonable for a writing intensive class. He is a professor that motivated me to do better when i was having a hard time in his class and he is willing to change your grade if he sees the effort taken.
An unreachable professor. His online classes had no live lectures; therefore, his lectures were one-sided. Had to rely on the teaching assistant every step of the way. Didn't provide proper feedback on any papers, especially when it came to tying his reasons for his grading to the rubric and how students can improve on the Final.
This was the hardest class Ive ever taken in my life. Save yourself and do not take a class under this guy. If you even look like youre not paying attention he will dock points. I was accused of bad grammar and I used Grammarly and had a professional journalist of 20 years give me feedback before I submitted my paper. Run while you can.
WAY too tough for a 100 level history class. Me and my homies HATE his arrogant and obnoxious ways. I got C's on paper because of "bad grammar". His TAs are basically his slaves, do and say as professor says. This dude needs to relax, he wants to be called professor 247 365 but is only an associates professor soooooo
He's not awful. He's a stickler for some ridiculous things and that can be annoying. Overall I found him helpful, yet occasionally condescending. Appears not to have a sense of humor... Was encouraging and supportive over Zoom, tried to engage students. Just approach him as a human and he'll respond in kind.
Avoid, avoid, avoid! He spends about half the class time scolding students in a condescending tone. Don't expect to use your own writing style, he grades harshly if it doesn't conform to his style. Stickler for small details, higher level history courses are not as harsh as he. Take another professor if 290 is required for your major. AVOID.
He concentrates way too much on making sure EVERY single student speaks. This takes away from any actual flow of discussion and makes it incredibly difficult to get through the readings (which there are tons of). You will only be allowed to speak up once in class then will be left to sit uncomfortably while he reprimands everyone. Do not take him.
I have gotten As my entire life and I will get a C in this class. He calls people out in class if he thinks you're not paying close enough attention to him when he talks. He is a harsh grader and pitches a fit (yes really) if you don't do it how he wants you to. Talks to students like they are children.
Please to all students that are required to take this class. Take a different professor. He takes away your first amendment and will implement a dictatorship in the class. He wants everything the way he wants it without informing us how he wants the set up to be like. Very rude and he discriminates people that are Asian Ethnicity. AVOID AVOID PLS.
This professor hands down is one of the worst professors in the whole of my adult life. Taking his class and being in the environment that he is in is like getting hit by a two by four every other second. Imagine students crying and failing his class just because of a few words that were accidentally plagiarized. Anyways, you get the idea. AVOID!
This is honestly the worst professor I have ever experienced. I would not recommend
I have never met a professor who is more arrogant and full of himself, He once yelled at me for checking the time on my watch in front of the entire class. He only cares about himself. Truly a horrible professor, I am going to school to become a teacher and its people like him who make me want to change the school system for the better.
This professor is a no-no don't even think about taking any of his classes. I attend college for six years and that professor is the worst teacher I ever see. Seeing him makes me feel uncomfortable he treats students like high school. If any of you arrive late he will call you to talk to him after class. His behavior is not suited to a teacher.
He induced fear among classmates and would publicly shame you for the slightest reasons. If students are unable to engage/looking @clock,isnt that telling of what class is like?He has told me and others that perhaps immigration &e class is not for us. There is some odd correlation between gatekeeping a class and immigration policies of U.S.
Unprofessional, inappropriate, and nasty. I hope CUNY/Hunter sees these reviews and investigates/reviews his teaching skills.
This is one of the worst "professors" I've had in a very long time. He comes to class not prepared, reads off slides robotically, and cant answer simple inquires about his own material! He's inappropriate, and treats his students with little to no respect. His class is easy and the material is interesting, unfortunate he as a human has to ruin it.
One time I was opening my google doc notes in the first five minutes of class and he came up to me, accused me of texting someone on my computer. I explained I was opening my notes and he forced me to close my computer. He is hostile. As someone who did not grow up in America, I struggled to keep up with the material despite it being a 151.
As a freshmen, I am always looking for constructive criticism that can help me become better in the near future, and I have gotten some good criticism from other teachers at this school that are beneficial, but with professor Contreras I think that his supposed "criticism" on my writing had more of a malicious intent rather than helpful criticism.
I have enjoyed 4/5 of my classes that I have taken this semester as a freshmen but the one class I truly despise is this class and not because of the material, but because of the professor himself. He chooses to treat his students like high schoolers by calling them out if they decide to check on a missed phone call or text for a split second!
Professor Contreras was all alright. The class is graded on three quizzes and two writing assignments. I am not sure what he looks for in papers, you can meet the criteria to a T and he'd still have something to say about it. He was big on participation and attendance and he HATES electronics. Take his class only if you HAVE to.
He is the worst Professor that I have ever had. His attitude is unbearable and grading seems arbitrary.
He is definitely the worst Professor I have ever had. I usually get along with low rated professors, but I have extreme animosity towards him even after graduating.
He talks a lot
If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you. Professor Contreras is challenging and inspiring. We read a lot for this class and participation mattered, but the material was interesting and the professor tries to keep the class active by promoting critical-thinking and participation. Great professor if your goal is learning!
Scholars beware! This professor is all rules without any actual academic rigor. He will shut down your ideas only to read from a book in a rote manner. Feels like working with a bot who malfunctions any time his feelings are hurt (aka when his intelligence is challenged.) Pass up on the needless torture & take a someone who will actually teach you.
I don't know how else to tell you...AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He will make you pay $100 for a moldy McDonald's sandwich (metaphorically speaking.) He makes things more complicated to protect his ego. You can honestly learn more by reading any course books on your own. Just do that and save yourself the trouble.
I wish I would have actually listened to all these bad reviews before taking his class.
One of the most self obsessed egotistical professors I've ever had in 4 years.extremely rude and condescending to me in multiple email and exchanges. The way he spoke to students at times left me in genuine shock. He's ok at teaching, but it's completely override by him being a horrible human being. Also showed blatant favor to Latinx students.
Contreras is the worst professor I have ever had. He talks to us like we're five years old then grades like we're in a graduate seminar. He'll talk the entire class then flunk your participation grade. If there is ANY OTHER CLASS that is available and not being taught by him, take it. If there are no other options, take an extra semester.
This professor was the most difficult one I've had so far. He was overly critical and rarely acknowledged our efforts positively. Participation was mandatory yet responses that didn't match his expectations were often met with a condescending tone. It felt like this man did everything in his power to prevent us from being successful in his class
He is a extremely hard grader. With pop quizzes non stop thru semester and they see work like .5 for every question he will say your participation is great but won't give beyond full credit for participation. It's not graded fairly you show up for all classes participate and you won't get an A this class stressed me out the most he grades tough
Beware no one gets an A. Even if you participate everyday you won't get full credit for class participation no one does the highest grade anyone got was a B+. Ten people dropped the class during the semester. I thought o was doing great he even said I had great class participation and still got a bad grade for class participation smh. Beware
The only thing you'll be graded on is the midterm, final, essay and participation. A lot go your grade goes to participation which is annoying. he's very rude and makes you read so much pages. He says it's only 10 pages max but towards end of sem it's like 20+ pages. he's strict grading essays and makes you write it in class in one period wtf??
He is the worst professor at Hunter college. Please do not take him.
All around terrible professor. Lectures are a summary of the reading, what passes for participation is just him looking for you to regurgitate a summary as well. Surprise quizzes on very specific details make it hard to do readings ahead of time. Not discussion based, with a bland and uncritical view of historiography around any topic.
He is the worst professor I've ever had. I think he's insecure about his own intelligence and he lets that affect his teachings. He is overly arrogant and dismissive. I really hope he is not tenured because Hunter should fire him. I received an A- in this class, so I'm not being vindictive. He's just an insufferable person and professor.
