It is true he doesnt give that much time for quizzes, but the quizzes come straight out of the homework. Do the hw and you wouldn't need more time. duh. He has a fairly easy grading policy and he will work with you if you need help.
Most of the quizzes (not all of them) do come straight out of the homework. But still, I didn?t have time to finish them. Yes, there are also slow students ?duh..? I almost lost my job because of this teacher. He told us two days before midterm that we have a test and I had to take two days off from work to study without notice.
He was a really good teacher and very likable and funny. His examples were good and I learned a lot from him. Just do the homework and pay attention in class and you will do well. You will spend the first class listening to his slight accent and the way he says 'okay' and 'here' way too much, but you get used to it quick. I want to take him again.
has an accent and keeps saying "ok" after everything and "right there" when referring to diagrams. be sure to show ALL your work for full points. otherwise a good teacher, willing to explain in detail
This teacher takes off points for every little thing. Most of the class gets C or less. Do not take him, terrible teacher.
He is a good teacher.Just do homework and go to his office hours n u will be fine. However he is picky in grading!
Booooooooo!!! Sorry... That is the rating this guy EARNS.
terrible teacher
He is not hard at all. Just do all the homework and make sure you understand it. If you don't see him at office hours. Go to class, he does speak a little fast but his lectures are organized very clearly. Lastly, copy everything he writes and review hw for quizzes and exams. Easy A
The class isn't the easiest, but it's physics- what do you expect? Super knowledgeable prof, easy going when you get to know him. His speaking isn't the best, but if you don't understand something then you just go to office hours. Time on quizzes isn't enough though.
Never met a teacher with so much energy and enthusiasm about their subject. He'll explain something a thousands times just for you. Outside class work isnt mandatory but you will simply do terribly if you don't practice. the quizes, midterms, and final were all based on hwk. MUST have interest in physics to do well but he is all around great.
Good teacher. Clear lectures! Clear in class and in labs. Does 80% of your lab and lets you to take the lab books home whenever the majority doesn't finish. Some of the quizes are take home. Says ok a lot when nervous during the lectures I think... but after a while stops... Go to office hours when there are not a lot of people to not feel rushed.
In 4A, he was crystal clear. But in 4B, he ran out of time and not that clear toward the end of the quarter (just because he hasnt taught 4B since 2003). but still, very good teacher. His tests are interesting. he surprises you sometimes, but adds so much extra credit. His quizzes are easy, stop complaining people, 20 minutes is more than enough.
Very unfair, that's all I gotta say. He makes me hate Physics even though it was my favorite subject in high school.
Not too bad of a professor if you work hard, but very strict on even the smallest things
Mr Luna is the best physics teacher I've had. He doesnt fool around, he is funny, caring, hardworking. Go to office hours and get to know him. He's an amazing guy and I wish he transferred schools with me. You should take all your classes with him because you'll learn a lot. His testing is based on hwk, how much easier does it get? He's wonderful.
Wow, the way he talks is annoying. Imagine Bulwinkle w/ a lisp while talking super fast. No lecture sched will wait until the last minute about exams dates. Really needs 2 have a lecture/exam 2 ensure students can schedule their study time effectively. Why should I have 2 use his office time 2 get clarification? Explain it clearly the 1st time!
this is my last class...i dont care about the W...i shouldve dropped this class last week...i tried to understand him but I really can't stand his voice and flamboyant lectures he's so jumpy and his voice goes up and down! It is really hard to follow. I'm sure he is a very nice teacher but beware -- he chooses favorite students and knows their names by heart. For those who aren't egotistic or teachers pet, good luck to u in this class. As for me, I am going to sleep in n take Newton next qtr!!!
Ugh. I only had him for the lab portion of Physics, but I hated it. I wish Newton taught the lab portion instead. Luna repeats the same words constantly and does not answer your questions clearly. His lectures are sort of understandable. More than half of the class dropped after the first 3 weeks. The things he want is very unclear and disorganized
So far, best instructor I've encountered at De Anza. Knows his material inside out, is enthusiastic, explains clearly, is organized. Problems on tests aren't difficult, but there isn't sufficient time to complete, especially since he requires diagrams, labels, coordinate systems... His grading is nit-picky, but it does teach students to be precise.
Prof. Luna is quite possibly the worst professor I've ever had. He doesn't review homework problems or quizzes even if asked to and speeds through material with only one or two example problems. He hasn't even looked at the book material (admitted to that)and for one of the exams we had half a day for a whole chapter that comprised most of the test
Hes actually a very nice teacher who is willing to help the students!Though his lectures dont directly correlate with hw(its harder), they prepare you well for the tests. If you have your concepts clear, then you'll find the tests extremely easy!He is frivolous about what he wants on tests, but the skills we learn now will def help us in the long run!
He is worst prof.ever.SOOO talkative and don't let you to scrutinize the concept.
Knit-picky about grading but you get to learn to be precise. Quizzes are not reviewed; however, you can find the solutions to the problems online. Did a lot of examples in class. I hated Physics before; now, after taking his class, I understand better.
Coolest Physics teacher ever! Get to know him, he's very helpful, and lectures are enthusiastic! Do your assigned HW! It's true that the clarity of his lectures sometimes get blurred because he speaks a lot, but he's a very nice guy! 88% A, 3 midterms worth 15% ea, 9 quizzes (every Friday) totaling 15%, lab component worth 20% and final worth 20%.
The main problem with this professor is that his not clear on what should we do on the test, so you need to pay attention and draw everything but the time he gives to do it is very little. Then his lecture tends to blurs out and ends up unclear half the time.
If you do the assigned textbook problems regularly, you'll get an A, guaranteed. Lecture and quiz problems pretty much come straight out of the textbook. He doesn't collect homework, gives take home quizzes, and drops your lowest quiz grade. I liked him a lot, but then again Phys 50 is already pretty easy to begin with..
He's a really enthusiastic physics teacher. First thing you'll notice is that he talks funny but you get over it. Lecture is very clear and helpful; he explains everything thoroughly. Lab is the same. Very organized. Pretty hard grader on quizzes, tests, easier on labs. Workload is medium-high.
Not too hard if you do the not unrequired homework he assigns each week which is due in the form of a quiz on the last day of class. Quizzes are easy as they are based off of the HW. Exams are easy if you study his past exams available on his site. Has a strange habit of ending all his statements in 'here'. Easy for a capable student.
Honestly, do the hw and you'll be fine. I thought he was a good prof. Do the hw and you'll get an A easy. My grades literally reflected if I did the hw or not. Someone wrote not to take him for several reasons and one was that class is mandatory. Why would you pay for a class you don't plan on attending...? You're in college, suck it up.
He is good. If you just listin to his lectures you will pass. He gives homework but he doesn't collect. :-)
Now look here okie, I took his 4B class here. Okie, compared to other physics professors here he is down to earth and even if you get wrong answers okie, if you get the logic right you can still get full credit here okie. Now, okie, I think thats all you need in a teacher here because physics is suppose to be hard here okay.
quizzes are way harder than the tests. gives problems he never went over in class. if you ask him a question, he gives a sarcastic answer. stay away from him here, ok.
Dr. Luna is easy going and willing to help students. However, his tests are so hard. He keep saying "here and okie" all the time, which many people find it annoying. I took his class over the winter, and I barely passed. Do all the homework that he assigns even though he won't collect them. The homework will help a lot. Do the practice exams too.
Very enthusiastic and easy going professor. His class is a bit challenging if you have never taken physics before, but just do the homework problems he assigns. If you are confused, go to office hours asap. He is very helpful when you are one on one with him.
He is a really good teacher. Go to class and pay attention and you would get a good grade. If you have questions go to is office hours and he will help you. Make sure to do the lab the way he wants. He is very strict about that.
Day 1 HR1 first day BS HR2 lecture Day 2 - Quiz worth 15% of your grade. Bomb it, or any quiz and it is now impossible to get an A. Drop. Total BS. The dude just doesn't consider your grade. If the quiz was on day 3 I can understand. But this is unforgivable. Take Newton, or someone else. Being able to kill chances of an A on day 2 is ridiculous.
He was 10 minutes late on the 2nd day, gave the class a quiz worth 15% of your grade on the 2nd day containing the hardest hw problems that were not covered, expects everyone to have read 2 chapters worth of material on 1st day, ends EVERY sentence with "here" or "okay" which is very distracting when he tries to explain things.
Just took his first quiz and it's pretty easy so far especially with some prior math and physics knowledge. The lectures and classwork are super easy and then homework becomes SUPER hard but he doesn't go over it unless you want to go to him after class. First quiz was really easy so far, you just need to pay attention and take decent notes.
For all of you in the summer session, like seriously for a physics class you gotta be dedicated and spend a ton of hours to get past summer session, I was already taking another class so I had to drop. And for the quiz he only gave it to us cuz of 4th of July. Overall I thought he was a good teacher, just that the summer schedule was hard to follow
his speech is sort of difficult to understand because he says the word "here" and "okay" at a rate of 2 per second. When he says "there here" it confuses me because you don't know WHERE it is. His class isn't that hard if you read the textbook and do the assigned homework. But I learn more from the textbook than the lectures he gives :/
I had lab only with Luna, so I don't know how he is in lecture, but Luna was awesome for lab! He explained the theory for each lab well. True, his "ok and here" was distracting, but you get used to it quickly. He is patient and even when I kept asking him the same question over and over, he was nice about helping me. Lab final was long, study hard!
I took Phys 50 with Francis and I withdrew from his class. At first, I was scared of physics until Mr. Luna made it very easy and understandable. I retook Phys 50 and ended up getting an A in his class. So glad I took Mr. Luna for only Phys 50.
I took Phys 50 with Francis and I withdrew from his class. I was scared of physics until Mr. Luna made it very easy and understandable. I retook Phys 50 and ended up getting an A in his class with test accommodation. So glad I jumped onto Mr. Luna.
I don't understand this teachers method of teaching. Here's something to pay attention to: If he goes over a problem in class, don't plan on questions like it on the exam. Every day it will be something new, even if it's on exam day
He definitely knows a lot about physics. He is very friendly and can explain everything well. The only problem is he teaches very fast, and gives hard tests. There is a quiz every friday, make sure you study his example problems, and the homework problems. Sometimes he will ask for conceptual explanations.
Good introductory physics class. Very eager to impart knowledge. Would take again.
He is easy and lenient in grading. Yes, he takes off some points when you don't do the way he wants but it's fair because he does a lot of examples in class. DO HOMEWORK IS A MUST TO GET AN A. Everything is based on the hw he assigns everyday. Lab is easy but you have to follow the his grading scale strictly when you write your lab reports.
Luna is a very good professor even though he has a tendency to move on to the next topic quickly. The fact that he finishes ALL his sentences but "here" or "OK" distracts a lot and you may find yourself lost after few minutes during the lecture.
His class was a nightmare. I was not able to follow his lecture. I was confused sometimes that I have to read the textbook. The textbook gave some of the terminology that he discussed in class, but it did not help much. If you want to pass this class, take with other professor!
Decent teacher who is always enthusiastic in his lectures. As long as you pay attention in class and do the homework, an A shouldn't be too hard. Still, when asked to explain problems/redo them, he tells students to just look at someone else's notes instead of taking the time to go over the problem again.
He is the most terrible teacher I ever saw. His class is a humanity class rather than a physics class. You don't have to know how to use a rule. If you were able to memorize all the definitions and proofs in the lectures, you would probably get a good grade. But just a reminder that he usually takes off points with no reason.
terrible experience ever. period
He is very helpful when you ask him questions but his lectures are just worked out problems. He does not slow down. Failed every quiz and test.
He's a very knowledgeable professor. Good lecturer, but class moves too fast. Multiple concepts introduced in 1 hr class. Some of the daily hwk is on material he has not lectured about yet so it's almost impossible to do if you dare to attempt. It would be REALLY helpful if he let us know what topic is next so we can print out material beforehand.
This class can be easy if you show up to class and follow his lectures. He does a ton of example that really help understand the concepts. Only problem with Luna is that he does not give out answers back for graded quizzes and tests, and it would be very helpful if he did. Very tough and specific with his grading. I did no homework and passed.
Luna is a nice guy but I did not care for him as a teacher. He taught through specific examples instead of teaching the general process, making homework difficult. He'd only get through 3-4 a class too. He was not clear on things; I depended on the book.
He's a bad teacher. While I got an A all he did in class were problem.... didn't dwell into concepts too much. Im currently taking newton for 4a and newton barely does problems in class.... makes me a more versatile problem solver cause I have a good conceptualization of physics. To get an A in his class, just do ALL your hw and show up to class.
Luna doesn't pull any punches on either quizzestest or lab work, but he more or less exposes you to EXACTLY what to expect, so if you miss something it's really on you. Testing material is taken right from HW, lecture examples, or practice exams. Be sure to do the reading. Expect to put in 15-20 a week to get an A in the course. Go to office hours
Absolute WORST teacher I've ever taken in De Anza. Don't be fooled by the pretty A- sign. Nearly 34ths of the class dropped him. At the end of the quarter there were barely any students left. Unfortunately, I had to keep the class due to the credit requirement. If you're new to physics--don't take him. You're left struggling on your own.
Here. here. here here. Ahh the pulley here. Well gee here. Vector here. Right there here
If you follow the structure of the class I don't see how you can get any grade lower than an A in Luna's class. Take notes, do the homework (textbook reading included), do the practice midterms and go over the example problems from lectures. His quizzes and midterms are straight from the homework and lectures. Study, and you will get an A.
I only had him for lab in 2A. He explained concepts well and was lenient with grading reports. He was a helpful for giving advice with sources of error. Seems like a nice guy. Overall, he is alright. There is better but also much harder physics professors out there. I appreciate how he is a little bit more straight forward than others.
His lecture is clear and fast. Tests are a little tough compare to his daily notes' questions. Doing hwk would be very helpful for exam which he never collect. Exams are only 5 questions. I don't know if I can pass his class, but he is a good teacher though.
this was my second time taking him. the first time i took him didnt pay attention barelly did hw didnt pass. Took him again!! sat in the front row! payed attention did hw (3-5 probs/day).. passed. his tests are 90% from hw/lecture. quiz every week. Gave 2 take home quiz! Midterm after 1st take home quiz was EXACTLY THE SAME...... DO THE HW UR GOOD
Absurdly meticulous with every step when solving for problems. Very easy to lose lots of points here and there. Very busy going over examples in class. Will answer questions during class, but not helpful outside. Puts up a great friendly front; a base man at heart. Not recommended if your new to physics. Otherwise, do the homework!
For those bad grades, they should admit that they didn't spend enough time. It's true that he covers the materials fast, but if you go to his office hour and ask him, he will explain them to you until you understand. He curves test grades and are open to take appeals on quiz/test grades within 2 days. And physics is hard... Ain't no easy A!
His lectures are clear but his expectations of students are outrageous. He will assign homework and then quiz you on it the next day. dont think it is possible for anyone to hold a job and take Math 1B at the same time with him. His class would be so much better if he would just wait a week (or a weekend) to quiz students on material he just taught
Organized lectures and schedule with a test every thursday and a few take-home quizzes. He wants you to succeed in class and also enjoy physics. His class was neither intimidating nor hectic. He would assign HW problems related to his current lecture everyday so it was easy to manage. His test are from HW. Will take his class again for sure!
if you're 5 min late to class 4 times, he will DROP YOU even if there is a month left in the quarter. Super unreasonable, & a snarky attitude. Gave him my notebook late and purposely told me he LOST it when he just had in his office. Way too emotional to be a professor. Gives little to no partial credit on tests. Don't take him or francis, so MEAN
Probably the toughest Physics instructor you'd take at De Anza. Despite learning the concepts, the tests are much more difficult than you'd think.
Mr. Luna is a good teacher and gives great lecture. He is very strict about grading and rubrics. If you want to get an A, you must follow him in the class. He will ask you to sign the attendance sheet everyday, so don't skip his class. Before midterms, he will give students exam reviews to tell you what will be involved in this exam.
Absurdly strict about tiny details, and doesn't explain concepts well. Always sarcastic and will grade labs or tests incorrectly and then argue with you for a long time, beyond you showing you're right before he'll give you points. Feels like he doesn't want to be there teaching and doesn't want you to succeed. I dreaded coming to his class
He takes off points if you don't draw a diagram or if you label things wrong. He doesn't collect HW, but it is best you do it though because some of the HW questions will be on the quiz or test. If you miss class more than 4 times you will be dropped. Quizzes are every Thursday. If you just do the HW and follow his rules, you'll pass.
Imo he a nice teach tho peeps get the impression of sarcasm. As long as you're not rude, then he'd respect you back. I've yet to visit him during office hours, but he's WILLING to answer a few questions about the lec., quiz, or test in the few minutes after class and does a great job of explaining if u've a knack or prior knowledge or else STUDY!!!
He is a great professor. His explanations were really clear. Quizzes were all from HWs. Lecture exams were easy and similar to his lecture notes and practices examples. His lab exam was fair if you understood all theories and calculations. Overall, easy A class if you come to lectures and took notes. I will take him again. Recommend!!!
Luna is a great physics instructor. Many students dropped the course (but that happens in every intro Physics course). He is eager to help during office hours. I will most likely fail the class, but I'd certainly take it again with him. If you've have exposure to physics in high school and/or calculus, this should be pretty easy for you. He's great
Really nice and approachable guy. Do all the HW and study everything he says to and you'll ace the tests, otherwise he'll take points without hesitation. Like any STEM class, expect a curve. Labs were a little frustrating, he grades you less for understanding the lab and more whether you follow his little rubric exactly, taking points away freely.
Took his class in Spring Quarter. Really ez class in my opinion since this is the intro course. Mr. Luna has a good teaching skill. He dislikes phones or chatting in class. H/w and the book is not very important. Quizzes every week and tests are mostly ez. All problems r from examples in class. Grading is generous. Very helpful with students.
He is a pretty good guy. I strongly don't wanna u guys to take this class because he pays too much attention on small details. And really stubborn about his opinion on how to do the problem. For example, u must follow his step completely or he will take off points without hesitation, even u get this question correct. Remember to do hw.
In terms of teaching he's pretty good at explaining concepts. His grading however is pretty rough. If your work is cluttered he won't bother giving you all the partial credit you deserve but he won't hesitate to mark off points if you're missing subjective information he deems necessary. Make sure your diagrams are clear and organized and do the hw
Def take Luna if it's between him and David newton. Luna is a really nice guy if you don't take photos or use your phone in class or be rude. He's super nice, but if your rude a switch just flips beware.
He's a nice guy. Can be helpful too. He doesn't collect homework, and his tests and quizzes (from what I've heard) are usually problems from the textbook. Make sure you know most the concepts in PHYS 50, stay on top of things, and solve the problems consistently.
He doesn't collect homework but quiz is every Thursday. I wouldn't recommend him as he only chooses to help students that he seems to like. Tough grader and unclear grading, everything must be his way or else don't expect to get any credit. If possible don't take him.
He is a funny man. Go over the concepts really carefully. Luna's office hours are very helpful, he is very willing to help. The only problem of Luna was the grading criteria, it wasn't clear, he made us label EVERYTHING and took out points when students forgot it. He had extra credits which was a take-home quiz and some extra points in the Midterms
Teaches well but very fast paced and only does a few problems every class. Be prepared to study several hours a day. Had a 4.0 gpa until I took this class.
His lecture is fun, but lab is difficult. He does require a lot for lab reports. I like his lecture, fun and easy to understand. DO all homework he assigns because quizzes, midterms and final are in homework. Don't miss any class and do hw then you will get a good grade. The class was easy for me
His level of difficult is clearly underrated! it should be 10! He picks on EVERYTHING! the only thing he ever cares about is Significant figures. He takes great pleasure in deducting marks. he is very picky about everything! take him if you want your life to be miserable. take his lab if you want to be even more miserable.
The class is not SUPER easy, BUT easy A if you follow the steps
I'll give a negative rating if I can. He OFTEN takes your points off for NO REASON. Don't ever try his 4A IF ENGLISH IS NOT YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE. It's extremely hard to catch his requirements. Hard to expect what's on the quiz. Takes points off on insignificant steps you skip. Gives example exams but doesn't provide good answers with every step.
His lab final (50% of lab grades) is closed book. closed notes, closed everything!! OTHER prof allows students to refer to lab notebook during lab final (which is a TREMENDOUS help!) But in his lab, you have to memorize everything! such as theories, formulas, and even how to prove an equation. Indeed the most horrible class I have ever taken!
in his lab final: There r almost 50 questions and 3 practical labs which you have to finish within 2 hr. No way u can finish it. Each lab class, each lab worth around 20 points. didn't write partner name: -1 point. lab notebook wrong size -5. didn't label XY coordinate -1. he would give u a 0 for late submission(the second after he lock the drawer
Lectures are very clear and understanding . Do the homework and attend lectures and you will get a good a grade.
Helpful during office hours. Drops lowest quiz. Need to study but not hard to get an A.
If you do all the homework and practice exams, you can get an A in class. Also attend the lecture to help understand the material. Very helpful.
GREAT teacher! Just do the homework. Most test/quiz questions are pulled from either the hw or review.
Took the class in the spring quarter. Challenging class. Lots of homework. The lectures are clear and helpful. Attend office hours for help. Work hard to get an A.
Had Luna for 3 qtrs. His lab exams are known to be difficult because they are NOT open note book (unlike other professors) Still as long as you study for the lab final it isnt too hard. Grades leniently. For phys4A4B4C I easily got 90%+ on lab portion of physics. Most laidback prof out of Lana, Newton, Francis and dkson.
This is for the lab section of 4A. Took him with 50 b4 and it was ez but now I know he has a very strict and high standard for lab report. Explains well, helpful and caring but he shows no mercy on grading. U need to work well with ur group, actually know what u r doing and follow every single rule in the rubric, no exceptions. Lab final is hard.
Professor Luna was honestly one of the the best professors I have had in de anza. He is very caring and is open to any questions that you may have. He takes his time to go over all of them. Lectures are clear. If you do the homework and read your notes for the test youll do great! 100% would recommend
Professor Luna is great! He goes through his lectures pretty quick and there's lots of info but he is thourough and takes time to answer any questions and give additional explanations. The homework is very manageable and he has practice exams online.
An awesome physics professor! Though physics and I are rivals, professor Luna makes it much easier for me to handle. Unlike other physics professors, the terms and language he uses are extremely simple and easy to understand. Quizzes and exams are based on assigned hw problems and practice exams. Btw, he is very strict about being in class on time.
Be faithful in attendance, pay attention during lecture, do your homework, and I promise you'll be fine. Don Luna is always happy to help you during office hour, and I learned a good deal about Algebra just by following along from his lectures, such that I wished he taught math here at UC De Anza. Physics: "Don't forget to draw a picture!"
Homework is not compulsory but if you do it you will be fine in the test . The only downside of his class is you have to come to class everyday .
Quiz & Exam questions are almost exactly like the ones from the HW/lectures. He gives you past exams which you can study from (80% of the exam will be like the past exam) His grading can be pretty harsh if you forget a step. Possible curve at the end? (got an A even though I was sure I got a B)
He's awesome, easy to approach and generally a really cool guy. He uses physical models like springs and basketballs to help visualize certain concepts which is nice. His quizzes are really easy, basically a copy of the homework. Make sure your work is detailed and well labelled on the test or he'll take points.
His Physics 50 in summer quarter is supper easy, but don't let that fool you! In normal quarter his classes are quite challenging! Make your choices wisely!
His class is easy to follow, and he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities! Make sure you do the hmwk he assigns, and ask questions during class. He is very approachable and friendly. I would definitely take his class again. Keep in mind that you'll need to study at least 5 hrs per week for this class alone in order to fully understand the class
the worse teacher that i had ever met. you won't get grade although your answer is correct. you must follow his useless steps for credit. finally, don't take his class
Luna is an amazing prof who made classes at 8:30am enjoyable. He explains the material well and is willing to help out during office hours! He has weekly quizzes based off the HW (easy) and gives extra credit as well. Just be wary of his grading because he wants you to show ALL your steps! His class is not hard at all as long as you put in effort.
You understand clearly what is going on with physics in this class. The quiz and midterms are easy if you do the reading and homework, they are the same type of questions as you see from the book. He really prepares for huge midterms by giving review sheets.
If you are looking to actually learn physics, take Luna. I took Luna and Newton, and Luna is way more efficient and actually gets places. He gives you a practice exam the day before exams which often times appear word for word on the real exam. Pay attention in class and the class is awesome.
Mr. Luna is simply the best Physics teacher there is. I have taken about 7 classes in Physics in my career. With Mr. Luna, I have done 4A, 4B and now 4D. He is sincere, hardworking, egoless and genuine. And the most important quality is how example based his teaching is - Mr. Luna is the best teacher I have ever hard in my career.
AVOID HIS CLASS!!! The lecture is pretty heavy. Every single week, there is a quiz. The quiz is tricky. Also, he is a tough grader. He is pretty strict on lab and his lecture is boring! Avoid taking his class.
Took Luna's 4A class in Fall 2018. Labs were fun and lectures were great with lots of examples. No +/- grading though.
Honestly, Luna is the worst professor I've ever had at De Anza. He is very technologically behind and doesn't update grades ever. He doesn't help when he walks around to "help" in class and just says useless crap that everyone already knows. Just really awful.
awful guy
I took professor Luna for physics 4A & 4B and they were both great classes. Lectures were clear with lots of problem solving examples. He was always willing to help. Make sure to attend the lectures and go to office hrs to get help with homework. Talk to other students to get their feedback about his classes.
Luna is a good Professor if you have taken physics before. Attendance is mandatory and you will get dropped after 5 absences or tardiness. Quizzes and exams are super hard and hes very picky about notation. Even if you get the problem right and dont use his notation he will take off points. Lectures are super fast and he doesnt answer questions.
Very Very strict professor. You only have 5 tardies or abcenses throughout the whole quarter. Very tough grader and lectures are not helpful at all.
Lectures are great. They are clear and detailed. Attend the lectures and do the homework and you will get a good grade.
PROS: He is good at lectures. CONS: He lets his emotions sway his decisions too often. You never know what exactly he wants you to do on a test. MAKE SURE TO NAG HIM AT HIS OFFICE HOURS or else you wont get a good grade. Lab is the worst because even if you follow the rubric you will get a C. He is just not clear with what he wants you to do.
Professor Luna is a very good lecturer! His Quizzes are very Lecture and HW dependent. Dont make the same mistake I did and write all the notes for each chapter as this is not needed. Just listen in class, do the homework, and youll be fine!!!! If you want an A do a little extra practiced problems BASED on the same thing he taught in Class!!!!!
I do NOT recommend his class. If you are late for 2 mins, you will be marked as absent for that day. Too strict for small things. He doesnt even take attendance everyday. Its random which is unfair. He is also emotional. If he doesnt like you, he will totally make sure to take attendance when you are not in the class or late for the class.
He doesn't tell you what he wants, and he grades very harshly about his specific notation and format (which he doesn't tell you). Even if you do the question 95% correct but make a small mistake in the beginning of the question, you get a 0. He has a pretty bad verbal tic, so even if you don't care about your grade definitely don't take his class.
The lab is hell. Why do I need to decorate the lab book?
Luna has a nice personality and is always willing to help. Don't cheat and don't be late for classes.
I took Luna for Phys 50 and got an A. Thinking it would be the same, I took him for 4B and wow. He definitely has an attitude and a bad side you could get on, but his lectures are better than say Francis. Only issue is his grading is so harsh that the 1st exam, most got single digits. Covid19 is the only reason I even have a small chance of passing
He's nice and kind person, but when he grades the test he might do a sloppy job. During the tests or quizzes make sure your work is neat and organized so he doesn't just deduct a lot of points. The concept of phys4B is hard and you might have to visit his OH every week to understand what his lecture was about
I took Luna for 4A/4B and he was very helpful. The material is not easy but if you go to his office hrs, do the hw, understand the lecture notes, and do the review midterms you can definitely get an A. Show all your work in the quizzes/exams just like he would solve the problem in class. Extra credit quiz! Respect him and he will respect you back!!
Great class. Video lectures are very helpful and clear.
Just had our second exam graded. Got an A on both. Exams are straightforward. Make sure to vied the lecture videos (very helpful), do the hw, and do the exam reviews and you'll do good in the class. Attend his office hours. Very helpful.
Luna's class is the best of all my spring classes. He is hard-working, has office hours every day. Quizzes and exams are based on lectures and homework. He makes physics class very straight forward. I like his class
Some things in the quizzes/tests are based off things not on hw and/or aren't covered in class. Absolutely no study guides too, so it's basically hope that you can work it out in time. He doesn't collect HW, so you can't use that to fluff up your grade. His lectures don't help you learn that much as he just repeats the same thing over and over.
Absolute gem. If you're able to take him for physics, do it. He is very easy to access out of class and genuinely cares about teaching the material. There was a quiz every week which can be a pain, but with how well he teaches I never complained. Again, take him, his lectures are super clear and you just need to do his homework (which isn't a lot).
I've had some really bad Professors at De Anza, but Luna might be the worst I've had, even if you study hard and pay attention to his lectures, you still won't know what he wants you to do. Even if you use the same method as him to solve, and get the correct answer he might not give you credit. His lectures are rushed. COVID-19 is less stressful.
Textbook only uses to do hw even though he doesn't collect hw. The grades are dependent on quizzes & exams. He'll drop your lowest quiz. You have to show every step on the exam or he will take off points. He's kind and willing to help you with hw if you attend his office hours.
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. I don't even know how he grades these quizzes but they are brutal. I have watched every lecture, done the practice problems, attended a few office hours and been to the Success Center. He gives 1 hour for the quizzes and some of the questions are not in the HW or the lecture. I hate his attitude.
He was a good professor but hes been teaching for so long that his ego gets to him. Rude to many students, has favorites and grades biasdly. My friend copied my work, she got an A and I got a D on one assignment yet she copied my work word for word. Hes not understanding of students situations either. Would not recommend.
He is one of the worst prof. I ever had. I took his Physic50 class, I know it's not going to be easy but taking him as a prof made it even harder. His explanations and examples are all over the place. Can't understand what he is writing and sometimes his lectures doesn't make sense. Don't recommend taking him.
I took his physics 50 and I got an A. I thought he was nice and he teaches well. Now I'm in his 4A class and omg I have no word. Everything has to be just exactly as he says and wanted. You do one thing differently and he still will take points off. I just want to ask. Why, luna? Why do you have to be so harsh and mean?
I took his phys50 and got an A. Now, I'm taking his Phys4A since I liked his lecture style. But I regret that I'm taking him right now. The average score for one of the quizzes we took is 2.8 out of 20. SMH. Can't even get partial credits and marks off more points than you can get. Never again.
I don't know how you're supposed to pass this class. Second quiz and literally everyone fails it. Make sure to follow every single step his way or else he will take off points but even then you don't know exactly what he wants for full credit.
I came back to rewrite a review because I didn't think it was fair to represent Luna like that. Luna's lectures are good, but he shows no mercy in grading but it's understandable why he grades like that because in the real world an error on an engineering project will result in disaster so he's training students to prepare for the workforce.
Welcome to Luna's class, where the quiz average was a superb 14%. Here there right there you know uh all right but hey
Those of you complaining about Luna are in for a rude awakening when you transfer to a UC. In UCs, many professors will not give you breaks. He may do a sloppy job grading at times so show your work neatly and the way he wants you to. His exams are for the most part reasonable, and he was helpful during his office hours when I struggled in 4B.
he does little explaining on lectures and gives hard hw afterwards. prepare to self-teach in order to pass his hard tests/quizzes/hw. you are forced to go to his office hours so he would explain you the material because he doesn't give solutions/explanations. ps. - umm g here
Worst teacher lmao quizzes are 45 minutes, but you need to submit a pdf file, so less time for u to work. Closes right at the due date. Won't let u submit quizzes late for partial credit, there are no makeup quizzes or exams. Doesn't take into account anything that might go wrong for online submissions. Only grades are quizzes, exams, and final.
he gives ez hw but then quizzes which are something you have never seen. worst teacher i ever took during my years at college
As long as the classes are online, don't take this class if you're taking more than two other STEM classes because the labs will consume a lot of time if you want a good grade on them.
Sometimes the hw are hard Sometimes he doesn't even give answer to some hw questions so idk if I was right or wrong. says hw help in tests but a lot of times doesn't. Assign 8 labs and only grade 3 of them and doesn't tell which ones he will grade, big waste of time. Especially when the lab and exams are in same week. can't even prepare well.
Solid professor, though I wouldn't say he's an easy A. If you don't study like the other students who claim his tests and quizzes are impossible, don't even bother to take physics here at De Anza because Newton and Francis are no easier. Want to do better? Go to office hours, put in the time, and get tutoring if needed, period.
Had Luna for lab. He was a decently nice guy, but the class wasn't run very well. He only grades 3 out of 9 or 10 labs, but doesn't tell you which ones he's going to grade, because he wants you to do them all. Since he only grades 3 labs, you also don't get any feedback and if you do poorly on 1/10 labs, that bad grade might count as 33.33%.
This is ridiculous. I don't know what he wants from the quizzes. All my answers were correct because I checked my answers with tutors. However, I have always got lower grades than half of the grades. He always wants him to solve problems in his way. Otherwise, he doesn't t give credit even though the answers are correct. Don't get his classes.
He teaches by giving examples, which really helps me understand how to do the problems. Homework is optional, but it helps to practice. The labs can take a while to complete (but it gets easier once you're used to the format and his expectations). He doesn't respond to emails but is available in office hours on most days. Quizzes/exams are timed.
Luna teaches by using examples so if you're an example-based learner, he's the professor for you. However, he is a really picky grader so you must do problems exactly the way he does them otherwise it's very hard to get full credit. Even if you don't care about your grade either, he shouldn't be your first choice unless you follow rules to the tee.
I really don't know how to pass this class. Just don't take him.
I have had Professor Luna for 4 classes, frankly because registration filled up before I had the chance to take anyone else. You don't learn too much from his lectures/attendance is mandatory, and he grades very toughly. I transferred with a 4.0 GPA to UC Berkeley this year for Comp Sci and he was my hardest professor. That says something.
Professor Luna lectures and then gives examples. Honestly I understood the material from his examples. He is willing to help you during office hours. I have taken him for physics 50 and physics 4A. And next quarter I will take him for physics 4B. The lab was very tedious in the beginning, but once you understand his concept it is repetitive.
Graded by 14 things, 3 tests, 7 quizzes, 1 final, 1 EC quiz. EC on every test. 3.5H of lecture every week. Optional HW. Lectures cover the topic then go through a handful of examples. Not bad class, but very stressful. Answer questions --EXACTLY-- like him for full credit. Most quiz/test questions are from examples, HW, or online. Best of Luck! :)
Honestly, most prior bad reviews aren't a good representation of Luna. I think he does a good job lecturing, and he's more than happy to help in office hours. Do problems exactly how he'd do them, and stay on top of homework and lectures. Don't make the same mistake I did by falling behind mid-quarter. That's the difference between an A and a B.
The class is not that bad. His expectations are very unclear. If you do not somehow guess what he wants to see on the quizzes or exams he will take all the points. The math can be right but if you leave out one single detail the whole process is wrong.
I just took 2nd test and it was straightforward again. The exam reviews are very helpful. Do homework and go to lectures and eazy A.
Great class. The lectures are very helpful. Need to show all work clearly to get full credit. Office hours are very helpful. Do the hw and you'll get a good grade.
This dude needs full attention from you. Do exactly follow what he wants from your test or else you'll get 0 on your test, literally. So in order to do that, I recommend going to class every day and maybe rewatch the video. Couldn't expect my final grade cuz he doesn't grade for the end of the 3-4 weeks. Overall, it was a bad experience.
Luna's 50 wasn't too bad, but expect a 180 for the 4 series. Luna lectures exactly out of the Serway textbook, doesn't go in detail with more difficult concepts and uses examples to explain everything. He's tough in grading, so do problems exactly how he does it for credit. If you make a critical conceptual error, good chance he'll give a 0.
This professor is disgustingly tough when it comes to grading. He wants you to only and exclusively use his methods to complete the exercises. He will give you an automatic 0 on the exercise if you do any type of mistake (big or small, conceptual or practical). I highly discourage anybody that doesn't want to ruin his/her GPA to even consider him.
Luna teaches by example. As long as you pay attention and follow the steps he taught, you can get the answer completely wrong and still get full score. His quizzes and exams use the same questions shown in lecture, homework, and past exams. He is super patient and always available during office hours. Extra credit on all exams.
Took a summer course ( phys 50 ) and he is a nice professor. will give lots of homework, but if you have any doubt he will solve at the end of the lecture As there is a 15 minutes window for doubt session.
Luna is a great professor. He always goes out of his way to answer questions about the lecture. He does have a lot of homework but it's great practice since he never actually grades them, and all his quiz questions were based on his homework and open notes. He also records lectures. You just have to work hard and study in his class.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS. 1. Does not give you enough time on exams 2. Very ignorant during office hours (dont bother going to office hours) 3. Bad time management (terribly timed labs & midterms) 4. If you fail, he gives 3 points (to compensate for all the bad grades you get) 5. Dilutes the concepts of physics 6. Etc.. char limit
if you want to be miserable take this class. dog water professor does not care about you and will not give you enough time for exams and quizzes
Worst professor I have taken at De Anza, last choice professor, does not reply to emails, does not accept late work, be warned.
He doesn't really teach, more or less he just shows examples on how he does questions. Be noteful of this though, he is very picky about your method of answering, as if you do not use his methods, he will penalize you for it, even if you did put in an effort with a correct answers. Plenty of HW, which he doesn't check anw, defeats the purpose of HW
Prof Luna is very rigid about what he expects, but he's clear about it upfront. No wiggle room for exam/quizzes being turned in late, but does grade on a curve and averages your lowest exam grade. Go to lectures, take notes and then copy the way he does the problems and you'll do fine. Gives an exam review the day before which covers all material.
Absolutely rubbish class. Lazy lectures and labs, does not respond to emails, has no time for you in OH (always crowded) and annoying with his constant okay, umm. His grading is my way or the highway, you either do incredibly well because your a favourite, or do incredibly poor because you've done something that he doesnt like. Avoid at all costs.
I never write reviews but I'm trying to save students. Trash Professor. He expects you to do things his way or no credit. His lectures are useless. Rude in office hours and has all his classes in the same office hours.
Don't take him. He's unsympathetic to the whole online environment of class. Very bizarre grading but his teaching is subpar at best, diluting physics and shows you how to do examples, but he doesn't outline clearly what step is needed for each question. Penalizes heavily for small mistakes. Labs are insanely low effort by him. Boring and unfair.
You have to do everything his way or you won't get full credit. Lectures are ok. My advice is to do the homework to past tests since some questions are homework problems.
If you want an A you have to spend more than 10 hours outside the lecture.
Not a worth it professor. One of the worst in the Phys department, grading is very vague, you'll either get awful or well to do grades. I'd suggest picking a more fair and reasonable professor. He is also very annoying, and he'll show his distaste for you when you visit him in OH. Very unorganized lecture with terrible labs, worst among online labs
His teaching style different with every teacher or professor i know, there are homework, but you don't need to turn them in(Do your homework, trust me). Grading is based almost entirely on quizzes and exams. This professor taught well, I got a B because I didn't take the class seriously at all, don't be me.
Very tough grader. Every little small errors he will deduct a lot of points. If you don't do it his way you will me marked down severely. OK professor at teaching just his harsh grading is the issue. Had a lot of office hours but most of the time its crowded. No matter how much effort I put in even if I get the right answer he will mark it down.
This dude was condescending, cold and just overall evasive. Hes always in a rush when you ask him a question and his answers to your questions dont answer the question. Taking him will be really rough. He does teach clearer than some other de anza physics teachers tho. Go to office hours before submitting his labs to get them looked over.
Weekly quizzes, 3 exams, and 1 final. He gives out additional 3 points for every test. He assigns hw problems every class meeting and you should do them in order to get an A.
One of the worst classes I've taken. Very tough grader and tries to make things harder than it is! Have to do exactly as he says. Quizzes every week and give a very short time for the work and submission. Assigns homework every day. There are also labs every week and assign a lot of work for it! Had to follow a very specific guideline.
I got a 5 on my AP Physics C mechanics exam and I still found this class to be super hard. Does not explain well at all and has very specific grading criteria. His quizzes are only about 20 minutes for 2 super long questions. Office hours is always PACKED with people and so he never gets to you. Take a different professor if you can.
He gives a lot of hw but he doesn't grade any of it at all, your grade is dependent only on quizzes and exams and you only get around barely 30-50 mins to do it. I never had any time to check my work at all, I only passed mine when he let them be take home. Don't take him for the love of god, also office hours are a joke.
This class is not something you can just take in the background. You REALLY have to put in the work in order to get an A; quizzes and exams are graded very strictly. If you don't solve the problems EXACTLY how he does you lose a lot of points. It's definitely possible to get an A, but it's way harder than it should be. Take some1 else if you can.
He doesn't explain things well at all and grades harshly if you don't do things exactly like him.
His lecture is pretty good and easy, but the periodical exams and quizzes are too difficult. his textbook assignment is not helpful for the preparation of exam.
He has a great accent. I thought he was Italian during the first lecture. There are 4 quizzes, (lowest one dropped) a final, extra credit, and an assignment to tell about yourself. His lectures drag on, but he records his lectures so you can always go back whenever you need to. His quizzes are HARD. As a high school student, he's okay overall.
He's a very nice professor but his class is insane tough towards the end. He teaches poorly towards the end and he fails to explain concepts, he will just go over the basics. The quizzes are however easy, if you take summer session you get lots of time. His grading is insane, you need to solve it his way otherwise no credit.
lectures are just him doing examples on the board and then he assigns you a bunch of homework problems that you don't really know how to solve because in his lecture it the problem he solved was quite different. So when you go home you have to study/watch videos after every lecture to understand. Doesn't grade hw and never replies to email.
Quizzes based on homework and his exams based on his exam preview or whatever he went through in class. Definitely have his own grading criterias and he strictly sticks with them. Just do whatever he did in class and the rest is much easier compared to other classes
his class is easy but he isn't. He doesn't use Canvas, doesn't reply to email. You have to focus on his lecture and can't do anything else even though it is so boring.
When it comes to teaching, he actually does a really good job despite the reviews. The problem is that unless you attend his lectures and take notes, you won't do well. He doesn't post a single thing online, has no canvas, and what he teaches isn't in the textbook. If you struggle then your only option is office hours.
I took this class online and it was not as bad as many of the reviews say. However, this isn't an easy class, so you must do all the homework and go to office hours. I often went to office hours to have Professor Luna double check my lab which was very helpful and ensured a good score. The tests were usually much simpler than the homework.
This professor only follows his set of rules. If you failed to follow it, you will be guaranteed to get a zero. His office hour is quite useless as he will only tell you to look over the lecture notes. Just avoid him at all costs unless you are really good at following instructions.
this was the first and only class i have ever failed. your grade will depend SOLELY on how well your midterms + final go. if you do not spend literally 4 hours a day studying, you will not do well in this class. his labs are also ridiculously nitpicky. if you plan on taking this prof, you REALLY need to spend literally all your time studying. gl!!
He is a tough grader with his owns set of steps that you must follow. A lot of effort and time are required to pass this class with an A. Having him check your homework or lab report before due date is a great idea. He'll explain the problem and point out what needs to be fixed. Not an easy class, but perfect score is possible.
Luna can be a great professor if you follow his guidelines just how he likes them. Not very lenient, you get what you get. A is definitely possible if you understand the material and study at least a couple hours a day. I was working and taking another class and it just didn't work out for me, but just try your best and you'll get what u want.
You cannot reach him, you cannot communicate over email, he will miss our assignment and if you go and ask also he will not provide credit.
Decent professor but the concepts themselves are pretty tough. He gives some free points in the quizzes and exams to make it a bit easier. Falling behind is really easy in this class and will be really hard to catch back up. I would not recommend you take Luna if you cannot manage the time.
Man, I wish I can turn back time just to tell myself to not even pick this man as my physics professor. Concepts are hard to understand, and when tests and quizzes come around, you'll have a mental boom. Don't take, even if he's the only one left, not worth your GPA and sanity.
This class was made so that the max amount of students would fail. This teach just wants to fail you bruv. It is almost impossible to pass this :/
I'm convinced that the only thing this professor wants to see on our exams is a detailed diagram of our tears. I mean, seriously, the questions are so hard they make quantum physics look like finger painting. Wayy to hard :((
class averages for labs were always around 8/20. his grading criteria is awful and he is really hard to follow in class.
Worst Prof. ever, avoid at all costs; better to wait for a quarter. Very mean, the full score of one lab report is 20, and the class average is 8. You have to ask everything not because you don't understand the concept, but because you don't know what he wants.(everytime) Always have a fake smile on his face, very uncomfortable to work with.
The professor tries his best to explain the lessons but because of the way he talks and the lectures being 2 hours long I doubt anyone can concentrate after 30 minutes of his talking. He grades in the specific order that he teaches things so it is extremely easy to lose points.
We cannot reach him, and he will not respond to emails. He forgot to grade and blame us. Worst teacher ever met in my life.
I had Luna as my Lab Professor and he was such a tough grader. Super nicky-picky about small things so if you have him for lab make sure to follow the structure he wants. I combined two questions together on my lab report and he didn't count the entire thing saying it had to be separated- even though I still completed the assignment.
Solid lecturer but everything else about this class is awful. He doesn't use canvas so you don't know what your grade is at a given time. 3 tests, weekly quizzes, lab, and final is the entirety of the grade. HW is optional but you need to do it if you want to pass. He doesn't outline what he wants until you already got a bad grade. STAY AWAY!!!
When Winter quarter began, the lecture hall was nearly fully packed. By finals week, very few remained in his class. Luna grades very tough and makes his midterms very tough. He gives very little room for forgiveness. I scraped by with an A, though I wouldn't do it all over again. If you want to enjoy 4B and keep your sanity, I don't recommend him.
I hate him because I dropped and I paid 1200$ for this course as an international student. He is the worst teacher I've ever had. He is do rude and careless about everything. He didn't teach and solve problems. You don't have any solutions for questions. Don't take physics with him if you like A grade .
I have never seen anyone like him in my 13+ years of going to school. Please don't take him if you're not the long-lost child of Albert Einstein, Issac Newton, or Stephen Hawking.
WE ARE NOT DOING PHYSICS! ! HE WANTS US TO FOLLOW HIS STEPS OTHERWISE WE GOT EXTREMELY BAD GRADE
Avoid him at all costs. Labs are designed so that you fail, grades lab reports very harshly and isn't specific about what the lab report should look like, the class average on all the labs were under 50%. He docks points on the tests because you didn't do the work exactly how he would do it. Almost everyone dropped the class because it was so bad.
Worst professor ever
Although I felt like he conducted labs instruction-wise better than Francis, he's super unhelpful when u ask for clarification and sounds like belittling when he answers. Francis labs are more fun. He's also hard to reach outside of class and barely answers emails until the end of the quarter. He also grades on small things for the lab notebook.
Does not use canvas. Grades unknown til quarter ends. There's a *very* specific way he wants you to solve his problems. Harshest grader ever. In the beg of the quarter, his class was full. By the end, only a third remained. Take a diff prof if you want to pass prep physics. quiz ea week, 3 exams, 1 final. No equation sheet allowed (only on final).
This is NOT an easy class. Put in the work or you will suffer. Only exams and labs are graded, but is very upfront about how everything is graded and sticks to the syllabus. Attendance isn't mandatory but you miss so much info skipping 1 day. TOUGH grader but is diligent about answering Q's. Half the class dropped. 1 EQ quiz. Expressive lectures
I understand why other people think he's a bad professor but in reality he is not. His lectures may be a bit dull but if you can hang in there then you should be fine. Make sure you prepare very well for his exams and do things the way he expects you to and you will have a good grade.
Half the class dropped. I'm one of them
I don't think some of the reviews accurately represent his teachings. I took PHYS 4A in the spring quarter and it was a great class! Do the practice exams and homework and you can get an A in the class.
Had PHYS 50 and PHYS 4A with Luna and they were both good classes. After taking 4A with Luna, PHYS 4B was easy. Attend office hours, lectures, and do the work and not difficult to get an A.
Worst professor I've had at De Anza, Negative feedback I've heard was not exaggerated Weekly tests are based off "optional" HW, but questions are instead from the whole chapter Threatens to report lab partners to the Dean if they share calculations on the lab report?? Canvas things due at 8:00, doesn't respond to msgs +more Avoid at all costs
Just checked my grade for PHYS 4A spring quarter and I got an A! Do the homework, attend all lectures, attend office hrs and you can get an A. lectures are clear and very helpful.
Took Mr. Luna's class this past spring quarter. I got a C in the class but I didn't do much homework. His lecture are great. Explains everything clearly. Do the homework and you can get an A.
Had PHYS 4A in the spring quarter. He assigns lots of homework but he does not collect it but you definitely need to do the homework to do well in the class. Lectures are clear and direct. Weekly quizzes based mainly on the homework. Exams also based on homework and lectures. Put the work and effort and you should do well in the class.
Pros: Lectures are clear. Answers your questions. Tests are based on optional homework and are similar to the example problems in class. Offers an extra credit assignment and you can drop your lowest test score. Cons: Problems must be solved exactly how he taught otherwise he takes off points. Rushed through topics toward the end of the course.
I always sat in front of class during spring quarter. The lectures were clear and easy to follow. Quizzes and exams are straight from the lecture and hw. I always went to his office hours and he was very helpful. He is also available during lab if you can't make it to his office hours. Go to class, do the homework, and you can get an A.
He is the worst teacher. Avoid him.
Took Luna for 4A in summer. Lectures were straightforward and very helpful. Very fair grading scale. Go to class, do the homework and study notes and you will do well in the class. Enjoyed the class.
I finished the class with 104%. Put in the work and you will succeed. The quizzes and tests are all based on the homework, you will know what to expect IF you study. Go to his office hours. Always willing to answer questions and give guidance. Great lectures, a bit rushed towards the end but no complaints. GIVES EXTRA CREDIT ON LITERALLY EVERYTHING
I learned a lot from him and passed his class, so I can't complain. It was a very difficult class though.
Assigns optional HW everyday, but completing it is crucial for doing well. Weekly quiz and exam questions are ripped straight from his lectures and the HW. He's strict about the exact method you use to solve problems, but if you follow them, he'll generously give lots of extra credit. Has office hours everyday, and are extremely helpful.
His office hours are great and his lecture is easy to digest. Physics is hard though so you will have to pay attention but so long as you do and understand the homework it's not too bad. Caring
TAKE PHYSICS AT FOOTHILL kind, but PLEASEE DON'T TAKE. Passing rate was 30% Most failed and had to repeat / drop. Hw optional, but U MUST DO IT TO SUCCEED. EXAMS ARE SUPER DIFFICULT. Labs are Stressful u have to submit FULL lab reports each time. THeres a lab final. note: I am not a dumb student who didn't try. If u need phys, GO TO FootHill
Took him for 4A and 4B, but 4B was MUCH HARDER. He is very selective and harsh while grading exams, but does give some extra credit on it. Quizzes have questions from that week's homework. Exams are based off lecture examples and the exam reviews. YOU WILL SUFFER! There is no other option. I was so stressed I pulled an all-nighter before midterm 2.
Professor Luna is very kind and helpful but his class is difficult for no reason. Just don't take physics at De Anza, it's not worth it unless you're very good at physics or just have a lot of free time. For reference, my physics 4B class with Ellen Judd at foothill was MUCH easier than my 2A class with Prof Luna a few quarters ago. That says A LOT
Phys 4B can be a very difficult class regardless of your professor. In this class you will either be a A/B student or narrowly pass with a C. A good amount of people fail/drop towards the middle of the quarter. If physics is your thing and youre good at memorizing answers, you should be ok. Luna's class is heavy testing and strict grading.
People who complain about this professor just don't do any of the homework. All quizzes and exams are based off homework, notes, and study guides. This is not difficult, it just isn't an easy like your other classes. Lots of extra credit, he's very helpful in office hours, and he's very talented with physics. Him and David Newton are amazing.
use the methods learned in class to do quizzes and exams. im not sure why my entire class expects him to give them full credit for stealing work off of chegg. tried to make study groups but nobody did their hw and they all dropped and complained. pro tip: find students who actually do hw and create study guides with them! do ALL ur hw! go to o.h.!
from the POV of someone scholarly (does hw, etc.): problems can only be done in his way, except his way is very unclear at times, you need to decode what he is saying. unfair grader (handed out 0's for 1st exam), does this weird condescending thing where he talks to you like you're a child. strict and stubborn. wanted to like him, wasn't possible.
took it a quarter ago. Do the HW problems day of, do them 3x-5x, it will lock into your memory easily. And then make sure you can do it again (without getting stuck) before the quiz/exam. go to his office hours because physics is not the easiest.. don't get waste time getting stuck on one hw problem, just refer to notes/book or go to office hour.
Luna is always enthusiastic and happy in his lectures and you can see how passionate he is about physics. There are weekly quizzes, and while he's a harsh grader and will take points off if you don't show work his way, he gives back extra credit points at the end so they pretty much even out. Do all the homework, and you're good, easy class.
There are lots of formulas to memorize, and plus lots of homework too much for a 4 unit course.
horrible grader, gave me points off in tests for the correct answer and work but was not allowed to ask for a regrade. maybe his classes are easier for in person or in longer terms. i took a summer class and had to drop. but i do not recommend this teacher to anyone how is genuinely trying to learn. i cried everyday, literally.
Honestly, the worst I have had in this college and actually in my life. His teaching on lectures is actually not bad, he is also funny, but the way he makes quizzes and grades them is horrible. If you are a new at Physics, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Real tough grader Also I always felt that he likes some students more than others
this teacher was very harsh on grading the quizzes and he tests you on things that he did not teach in class. the class was very fast paced and there was a lot of homework.
For success in this class, do the homework diligently and make use of study tools like unstuckstudy AI alongside the textbook. Professor Luna's teaching style is straightforward, and office hours are valuable. Stay engaged, and you'll likely do well.
Took the summer session and felt it was fairly slow-paced- many lectures (especially later on) consisted of doing 3-4 problems throughout the class. Quizzes make up the whole grade, and problems are very predictable (he publicly posts past tests) and studying classwork and concepts will set you up for an A. SO much extra credit offered on quizzes.
It isn't about the papers or the pen or the veneer callipers. It's about discipline, obedience, and humility. Following orders that you think may mean nothing without hesitation so that when orders come, when arrows fall, and hooves trample, and blood flows, you will do the same, without hesitation. Trust me, anonymous, get rid of your past life.
This professor was unclear with everything that he taught the the class was fast. did not feel like a beginner class and the grading is HARSH. If you want an A, DO NOT take this class.
This guy is a total joke. He thinks he is something
Illegal teaching
I don't recommend this professor. His summer class was extremely difficult for a 4-unit course. Quizzes are tough, and he insists you solve problems exactly as taught, even down to wording. Correct answers with all steps shown still lose points if not done his way. It's not worth the hassle — choose another professor if you can.
Ever wanted to go to a casino, but can't afford it? Professor Luna's got your back. No matter how well you understand the subject , if you've ever heard of a "physic" outside of his class and do a problem slightly different, get ready for a whooping. His grading criteria is so cryptic, Shrodinger's cat probably feels like it has competition. Avoid.
Try to avoid him even if he is the only one there. His classes and labs are totally aweful and unfair. He always do his best to deduct points as much as possible.
Hands down the worst professor I have ever had. If you are considering taking his class you might aswell just wait a quarter and take someone else. DOESNT HAVE A CANVAS PAGE, unclear grading and unreasonable grading, will not receive a take home quiz at the end of class the day it was due since it was due at the beginning. He wants you to fail
If you are new to Physics, stricky stick to the homework and textbook. Of course this is a science course and put in some work is what expected. If you already knew Physics, follow his steps in solving problems and it is gonna be an easy 100%+
Spring '24. Weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, final, lab final. He's the blueprint physics professor & many other professors use his material. Must show all work exactly how it's done in lecture/book. Gives partial credit. Provides practice exams. I think HW was ungraded, but MUST do weekly to pass. Lecture slides on website, but don't skip!
We just had the second test. Very similar to the homework and exam review. Do the homework and exam review and easy A.
Took the class in fall quarter and I am taking physics physics 4A now. His class really helped me a lot in 4A. Do good in physics 50 and it will make 4A easier.
I managed to get an A despite skipping a lot of classes. I did terrible on the quizzes but extra credit and take home quizzes saved my ass. A few advice: Do your labs diligently, as the final lab would cover all of the previous labs, and check them with him during his office hours. Do the previous exams and review for the test. Good luck you all!
hopefully he discovers the concepts of canvas and emails soon 🙏
foothill is 15min away
He is difficult, not the class. He won't grade what he doesn't want to look at. He's the type to make you learn and write with his own version of the alphabet and claim not to be able to read english. His step by step process isn't here to help you get the problem, it's to make it easier for him to grade.
Nothing is impossible, except finding a teacher, or human being in general, worse than whatever this is
Is there any way to make the rating scale go into the negatives?
do not take him - do a 3rd year if you have to - go somewhere else - move countries - continents - DO NOT TAKE
Had physics 50 last quarter with Luna. I am taking professor Artum now because Luna's class conflicted with my schedule. Luna's class is helping a lot in physics 4A. Highly recommend Luna for physics 50. The previous ratings seem to be from an upset student.
Unbelievably high expectations for lab reports. Avoid at all cost. He grades it as if giving you any point is giving you a part of his salary.
Genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. Extremely unclear how he grades, and when I tried to talk to him about how he graded my paper, he pointed at his unclear circles and smiled with a shrug. Doesn't let you submit assignments even 2 seconds late, or else you get a 0. DO NOT take his class.
Class is tough but fair. Labs are hard, had 15/20s every lab but I still ended with a 97% overall. Do the homework, it's literally the exam. A lot of students complain that Luna is “too hard,” but honestly, if you're just looking for an easy A without putting in real effort, go take someone else. He's not going to hand you a grade for showing up.
Prof. Luna is a great professor for those looking to pursue a more rigorous stem related education. He approaches teaching physics in a more numerical approach, but also covers the conceptual components well enough. Do the assigned non-graded homework on time, and understand it, and you will be fine. Solve using his problem-solving methodology.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR UNLESS YOU ARE AUDITING. I will say that he is pretty okay at lecturing (in terms of other professors at De Anza), but my god the lab reports were ridiculous. Weird, inconsistent grading that will tank you. I do not recommend taking this professor for lab- maybe if he was just lecturing but he does not for many courses.
He is the worst prof I have ever met.
His class is helping me a lot in PHYS 4A which I am taking now. Take his physics 50 class and it will help you do good in physics 4A. Do the homework and the exams review and you will get a good grade. The lectures are very helpful and clear. Highly recommend his class if you plan on taking physis 4A.
Not worth your mental health or your soul. Just take physics at Foothill if you need physics. Please take literally anyone else.
Go to class and follow his steps in solving problems and you will get an A in the class.
Awful on being lenient on anything
The class was very straightforward. Quizzes and exams are directly based on the homework and lecture. Attend his office hrs for help or go to his lab for help. Not difficult to get an A in the class.
I didn't do much homework and I still got a B in the class. Attend his class and follow lectures carefully and you can get a good grade in the class.
I didn't get him at first, people who write awful reviews for him just didn't follow his instructions. The easies class i've ever taken. After 60% of class dropped he gave so much extra credit that my grade went over a 100% in his class. He gives extra credit only to those who do well, he doesn't if u get bad score. Just follow his simple steps.
One of the toughest professors I've had. You really have to try in order to pass. >50% of my class dropped. I would have gotten a B had I not went to office hours. He let me fix my 1/20 quiz, as well as some bad labs. He notices if you try and he will cut you some slack in terms of makeup, especially after the majority of the class drops.
Don't let the bad reviews discourage you from taking Professor Luna. He's a truly dedicated and friendly physics professor. I've never seen another teacher lecture for 3–4 hours straight with such energy. His teaching is clear, straightforward, and effective. If I get the chance, I'll take the entire Physics series with him!
I got an A but fought tooth and nail for it. Take another Professor, Luna is truly terrible.
I took 4A in summer and it was a great class. Got an A and so did several other students in the class. There were several take-home quizzes. The extra credit assignment helps your grade so make sure to submit it. Quizzes and exams were based on the homework and lectures. You will do good if you do the HW and attend the lectures.
Do not take him. More than 60% of the entire class has dropped his class
Lectures are hard to follow , gives no second chances even though you have very good and logical reasons , miss the time by one sec and ur done , 12/60 students in my class passed , everyone else dropped cuz he has no kindness in his heart , tests and midterms are crazy long and hard , He also is a do it my way or no way typa guy .
Genuinely the worst teacher I've had in my life. Extremely picky about formatting to the point of not caring about whether or not your actual answer is correct. Have to worry more about whether or not a solution aligns with the rules he makes up than actually learning the material. Says he gives partial credit then docks 50% for missing subscript.
I would alter the timeline to mean I wasn't born if I could prevent Professor Luna from ever becoming an educator.
Lots of rules, but lots of extra credit too. Lectures are boring, but take note of what he says (not just what he writes down) because it is often the answers to quizzes. Homework & practice tests are similar to exams. Could be harder for the first physics class, but this is easier than AP Physics 1. Easy to talk & super helpful outside of class.
Yes, the class is tough, but it's not impossible. If you stay consistent, keep up with the homework, and take advantage of the extra credit, you'll be fine. Complaining about the rules doesn't help, they're there to make sure you don't miss steps or make things up. In the end, the professor is fair, structured, and gives you tons of extra credit.
BROS, the final exam is so straightforward that it would be nearly impossible for you to fail, I love you so much Luna
No way the final is real, it's literally a free pass. The first time I've ever felt less pressure in a physics course than in my Math 1D class
This class can be hard in the beginning with too many rules, but in the end, the extra credits and easy finals save my grades. Super friendly Love this guy!!!
Honestly, this is the worst class I have ever taken. This Professor is very biased and his class is so Byzantine without any actual structuring. An extremely enigmatic grader, DO NOT TAKE !!!
