Somewhat difficult to understand, notes aren't very clear, tests ask random facts from the book. If you ask for help he will help you. Not a slack class, which he emphasizes. Expect to do a good amount of reading particularly his one assignment on reviewing sociological articles takes a lot of time and is confusing. Tough teacher, interesting class
Intersting the first couple of days. Then he becomes kind of strict and boring. Must read the book in order to understand, and also you must spend alot of time studying for his tests. He asks you random things on tests pertaining to the text. Lots of lectures and notes on the overhead, which is hard to understand. This is one study hard class!
He is an ok teacher, but his quizzes have nothing to do with his lectures. So, basically if you don't read you fail. He also likes to ramble about stuff that doesn't pretain to the topic. He is also late or doesn't show up to class sometimes.
He is nice guy, but sometimes his tests and quizzes are hard to understand (may be due to english being his second lang.) If you do not read do not expect higher than a C. And he is crazy about attendence and tardies, but his class can be really fun. And the subject is pretty interesting (at least to me it is)
Great guy, horrible teaching. You must read the book to get higher than a C. Dont expect to do well just listening to him because he rambles on about stuff alot. He is always late to class and dont expect to get out early! You must study ALOT in the class to get a C
I had Perez in his first semester at CNU, and I enjoyed his class. He's funny, if a bit random, but still gets his lectures done. All of this crap about the impossibility of getting an A. . .just read the book, study your class notes, and listen. He wants people to succeed, not to fail, and I find him very fair. Take it and enjoy it.
really nice guy. cares and wants you to succede. but he isnt going to give you the grade you must read, attend class, take notes, and study for this class. its not easy but worth taking if you are seriousd about sociology.
Perez is really funny and has a great accent to listen to when you're bored. He's caring and has nice lectures, but they don't pertain to the chapters. You have to read. The only problem I had with him was he regarded some of the issues we talked about with too much humor, and usually with a very closed mind.
If you have a choice, do not take him. I feel like I just wasted an entire class. Not clear on what he truly wants, and grades very picky.
Has good intentions and means well, but seems to have problem knowing what he wants from students and is a very picky grader.
Dr. Perez comes off as a nice guy at first, but don't be fooled he will piss you off later. I had the impression the entire class that he didn't know what he wanted. Any time you go ask him a question he is completely unhelpful, if he tries to answer your question at all. Papers he grades kinda easy, but his tests will kill you as in M/C F average.
one of the best teachers i have ever had. he makes the lectured fun by applying them to real life, and not just real life but his own life, and he's hilarious. his tests are somewhat hard so study up and keep reading, just do what he asks you'll be fine.
As for the content, it is relatively easy, however, he's awful. He introduces a syllabus, but does not go by it. Our class expected about a total of at least 15-18 grades and I think we ended up with 8-10. He is unclear in what he wants and butchers the English language, which is why you can get good grades on papers, but so can a 6th grader.
Impossible to understand him, he makes no sense. Over half the class dropped throughout the semester, need the book for pointless journals, dont bother studying for tests, it wont help, just show up to class and hope you pass.
It is sad that such interesting material is taught by such a horrendous teacher. Not very helpful and very unclear about expectations.
Really awesome teacher and really funny but hard class and hard assignments. Just study hard and do what he tells you, but be prepared because he grades VERY strictly. Good luck, you'll need it with Perez and 301W.
undoubtedly the worst teacher I've had ever.I went to every class, put extra time in,even did well on the papers and still did poorly.strict grader yet has spelling errors in every power point, refuses to discuss issues,I e-mailed him after grades posted, his reply was a general e-mail saying he was unavailable to students until August so not to try
I think hes a decent teacher, but, I did goto his office during his office hours and he said he could only give me 10 min. b/c he was busy. His lectures give real lfe prspctv on theory, somtimes its good, but if you dont read, its impossible to do well. Read and don't fall behind on the big research paper stuff. It a tough class, so a B is vry good
Here's how to get through SOCL 314 with Perez. 1) you MUSTMUST read and especially KNOW little details and statistics. 2) after getting tests back, ask to go to his office to review it so you can see your mistakes. Sometimes, you can get a few points back if you can defend your answers. 3) Be polite in this process.
Only professor I've had that made me want to change my major. Completely wrapped up in his book, so much so that assignments don't get back promtly and he's inflexible with office hours. Tests and assignments are riddled with grammar and spelling mistakes. He takes it personally if you question him at all. I don't recommend taking his theory class.
Incompetent. He does not give enough guidance or clarity to his students, causing his students to feel a general sense of dispair and a lack of motivation. To pass his tests you have to read his mind and regurgitate back to him what he THINKS is the best answer. He tests on things not covered in class, and doesn't give enough time to take the tests
By far the WORST professor in the Sociology Department and at CNU. He is completely incompetent and is unclear about everything in the class. Will not stick to the syllabus or guidelines, so they are useless. He makes no sense and an 8 year old could correct his grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. Perez = Pay hundreds, learn nothing.
Worst professor that I have ever had in the sociology department. His class was pointless to go to. Tests were ok, a lot of statistics. Do the readings! Good luck if you get him
Worst professor to attempt teaching thus far. Outside of class he's not the worst human alive. But if you'll ask him for help, don't expect anything.
Perez is a terrible teacher. He's a nice guy but wow he is completely unhelpful! I studied nonstop for all of his tests and had NO absences, took notes.. yet i have to repeat it and dont get me started on the paper.. good luck trying to understand what his pointless notes mean! he wont help you one bit. 60-80% of students have to retake the class!
SHOULD BE LET GO! Insulting or funny depending which side you're on. Uses old sources. Lecture does not always match readings. Cocky and insults you instead of answering questions. Tests were fairly easy if you write down what he says- even if it goes against what the power points or reading says. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
One of the Easiest Professors at CNU!! Extremely smart and a great person. He also tells very funny jokes during class to keep us engaged. GREAT PROF!
His class is really fun and interesting he makes the material come alive! Great Professor!
He is funny, and makes the class interesting!
Perez is an excellent teacher who gives the information needed to understand the subject, but makes it fun at the same time.
Gives Extra Credit. Amusing to listen to.
Perez is an awesome teacher. He is very enthusiastic about the material and it's obvious that he loves to teach. He has a passion for the subject, and makes it really interesting.
Perez is a good teacher. Come to class, take notes from the power points and you will do well on the tests. Very few homework assignments and NO PAPERS!! Learned a lot!
Great teacher! His class is really interesting and helpful if going into teaching! Only a few reading assignments for homework and no papers! The tests are fine as long as you come to class and take notes! Great class!
Dr. Perez is a very interesting professor and makes it worth coming to class. After taking the first exam,I understand his teaching style.... I feel that his grading is fair and his tests cover only material that has been discussed in class.
Lectures are interesting. He has the energy to make the class interesting. Doesn't use a text which is nice, but I miss the security blanket to look things up. If you go to his office hours he is willing to listen and help you as much as he can.
Dr. Perez is a very friendly professor, and makes the information interesting to learn about. His lectures are easy to follow, and go right along with the information needed for the tests. He wants his students to succeed, and learn as much as they can in his class.
Easy extra credit, interesting lectures.
It is a awesome class if you pay attention it is really interesting... He is pretty funny and very real
Dr. Perez has a lot of knowledge on the subject matter and has a real interest in learning. His tests are not difficult if you study, come to class and take notes. Overall, his lectures are interesting and enjoyable!
Professor Perez is a funny, down-to-earth guy. His lectures follow along with his power points, and he shows videos to back up the information. Take notes and study them before the exams, and you'll be fine.
Dr. Perez is a really funny man who has a genuine interest in what he is teaching. He is very willing to help any student who asks. The tests are not hard as long as you take notes on the lectures and come to class (which isn't hard because he makes the class interesting!) Great professor!
Dr. Perez is a great teacher. He is willing to help. All you need to do is attend class, take notes, and study before the test. Not much work for the class. He is a funny professor and makes coming to class enjoyable!
Dr. Perez has really opened by eyes to the extreme amounts of diversity many students will face while in the educational system. If you want all of your beliefs about school debunked, then this is the class for you. Dr. Perez is a character, a character you will want to get to know better.
Gave a study guide. Study it, go to class and take good notes. You'll be fine. Scary dude if you don't know him. Get to know him, you can relax and learn. Cool dude after all.
Mr. Perez is a really cool teacher! He keeps you entertained and not bored, which is good because I had him on a day with a full class load- I looked forward to his class. The information he gives you is interesting. Take good notes & study them and you will be just fine! I would definitely take a class with him again!
Dr. Perez is a great instructor. He is helpful and easy to get along with. He is also very funny and keeps us entertained.
He's adorable in his eagerness to get his point across. He KNOWS his subject and tries to help students to understand it, whether it is their major or not. Reasonable, and understanding of student limitations.
A few people in the past gave him negative reviews, but he really isn't too difficult. We don't use a textbook, he provides study guides, and is available for office hours if anyone has questions. If someone tells you he's mean or too hard, it's probably because they took him for Sociology Theory (which is for Sociology majors).
Dr. Perez is so fun! His class is the one to take if you are looking to be a teacher and learn more about the educational world. He always engages the students in conversations that help you understand the information in a practical way! I love Dr. Perez and this class! His humor and personality make my day everyday! Please take Dr. Perez!
Dr. Perez is an awesome teacher! He is energetic, enthusiastic and you can tell he really knows his subject, and really cares about it. He makes the subject interesting, fun and applies it to our everyday lives. As long as you study you can do really well in this class! I strongly recommend taking Dr. Perez!!
Dr. Perez is totally different than how people in the past decribed him, his class and quizes. I was a little scared but after our first quiz I can say that everything he tests on comes from his lectures. Dr. Perez is very intelligent, easy to talk with, and helpful. If you have doubts about anything you should talk to him first-he will listen.
I highly enjoy Dr. Perez's class. It is a great place to express opinions and to hold class debates on what I think is wrong with the world. I do think the tests can be hard if you don't take detailed notes everyday. Even though you may not think it important, it will usually show up on the test in the form of extra credit at the very least.
Dr. Perez is an encouraging teacher with a real understanding and appreciation for the world. He teaches his classes in a fun way brilliantly combining humour with fact and intellect. The key to success with him is OFFICE HOURS...if you don't understand something talk about with him! It will make sense and may even be entertaining!!
Dr. Perez has a self-evident passion for the subject and keeps things interesting, lighthearted, and humorous enough for everyone to feel comfortable in discussions. Doesn't require extreme amount of reading or work, but enough to get the objectives across in a relatable way, especially to non-soc majors taking it for an education requirement.
He is a pretty good teacher. Everyone should write down everything on his slides because they will become pertinent later on in class. Also the study guides are very helpful!
While his teaching style and my learning style do not always coincide, Prof. Perez is always very willing to meet up and further explain the information. He works very hard to connect with the students and is good about using material that is interesting and relevant.
Dr. Perez is very knowledgealbe in his subject area. He does not require much reading, and his lectures are very interesting and relatable outside of class. Although understanding his teaching style takes some time to get used to, once you get it his class is amazing. I have learned more in his class about education than i ever cared to know!!
Dr. Perez is a very helpful teacher. He is personable, funny, and entertaining to be around. I enjoy his class very much. I will highly recommend him as a teacher to anyone who is taking sociology classes. I will try to get him as a teacher for next semester. GO DR PEREZ!
This class is very interesting and Perez uses material that is applicable to real life circumstances. Make sure you pay close attention in class and write detailed notes as there is no textbook currently. Overall, this class has taught me alot about education that I can apply both in other classes, and in my field experience
Dr. Perez is truly a helpful professor. I was unsure of myself on the 1st test and I came to him and he prepared a study guide for the class that really helped! We've learned everything from Horace Manns Common School Movement to why teachers should use purple instead of pink pens when grading assignments. If you get the chance take SOC314 with him
Dr. Perez is passionate about what he teaches, and it is easy to stay engaged during lectures. The material is both interesting and relevant. While reading is minimal, actively listening and participating in class are essential to success.
First off, I'd like to say that using internet sites like this to completely judge a person is not fair. For me, teachers like Dr. Perez that push you is what college is about. He is not here to babysit you and hold your hand. Be responsible, show up to class, take notes and you will get the grade you deserve.
Perez gives you exactly what you need to know. He is funny, and makes the content interesting.
Dr. Perez is extremely passionate about what he teaches, which makes his students want to learn more. His lectures are engaging, he's willing to help and he tries to relate to his students. The material is easy and interesting to follow, so as long as you take notes and study (which you should do anyway) there's no chance you can fail his class.
On the first day of class, Dr. Perez walked around and introduced himself personally to each student. He's continued being approachable throughout the semester, and creates very engaging lectures. He takes student feedback and adjusts accordingly. I'd highly recommend taking him, but you will have to show up to class and be willing to learn.
Dr. Perez really seems to enjoy teaching. He is very approachable and encourages students to visit him during office hours if they need additional assistance or if they just want to stop by and say high. The class isn?t just listening to the professor lecture. Dr. Perez presents the material in and interesting way.
Prof. Perez always seem to be exciting about teaching, and for me personally, that is what makes his class so enjoyable. His slideshows are also very helpful, if you take all the notes, but that responsibility falls on the student, not the professor. Prof. Perez is always encouraging students to come to his office hours.
great professor! attendance not mandatory, but there's no text book so it is strongly suggested you go - but his class is fun so attendance is never an issue. Class is awesome, no papers, final not cumulative.
Dr. Perez is a great professor and makes the class interesting with his knowledge of everything that has to do with education! I was scared when I saw some of the other reviews saying his tests were hard, but they cover the exact material that is in our notes.
Prof. Perez is a great teacher. He is approachable if you need help during his office hours or through email. There is no text but he uses articles on topics covered in class. The classroom discussion and lectures are interesting and sometimes amusing. He grades fair and as long as you are there to participate and take notes, you should do fine.
Dr. Perez is a really good proffessor. He makes all the classes very interesting. There is no textbook for this class so he always has an article or video to help relate to the class material. He uses powerpoint lectures, which helps a lot when studying for the exams. I would highly recomend him for this class.
Prof. Perez is a very nice and easy-going teacher. He is serious about his work but willing to help as needed. People said he was extremely hard but that must have been for the writing intensive because I like him and his methods. The no textbook idea is nice because we can talk with him more (and we save some money!)
Dr. Perez is a great professor. He is very friendly and approachable. The class is very interesting. Just make sure to come to class, take notes, and study for the exam! I would definitely recommend taking a class with Dr. Perez!
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Dr. Perez's class. I have learned an extensive amount on the Sociology and consider myself lucky to be in his class. While the subject matter can be somewhat difficult, Perez is fair and informative. I actually have a lot of fun in his class and look forward to going every Tuesday and Thursday.
I have never been a big fan of powerpoint, but it works for me in this class and I attribute that to Perez's ability to teach. Granted, his first langauge was not English, so sometimes he says things "wrong", but he is perfectly understandable. He is very helpful and our most recent test grades were all B's and high C's. You have to try to fail.
professor perez is a good teacher who is very interested in his work. he loves to talk about random stuff during class to make you laugh and keep you interested in the material. i recommend his class to any class rank at cnu
Dr. Perez is the best professor at CNU.
Dr Perez is very helpful and engaging. He knows his subject and makes it easy for students to grasp the informataion. If you put forth effort you will gain a lot from the calss!
excellent teacher
Dr. Perez is a hilarious and incredibly intelligent professor. He covers material well by bringing in relevant articles for us to read but keeps the class captivating with his wit and humor. I generally put a lot of effort into my course work and have found that with Perez's teaching I can do very well just by following lectures and studying hard.
Dr. Perez is a great professor. He is interested in what he is teaching and makes us laugh at least once every class!
IF YOU PAY ATTENTION THIS CLASS IS VERY INTERESTING AND ACTUALLY NOT TOO DIFFICULT! PEREZ KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT AND IS VERY REASONABLE
Professor is very knowledgeable and makes the class engaging and humorous. Makes himself very accessible and convenient for office hours and will help you understand what you may have missed in class. Study guide is helpful and tests are straightforward.
took this class at 8 am with 95 other people. if you're not a lecture student you aren't going to do well. he is very funny but he thinks a C is fantastic in his class. very few grades. tests aren't the easiest because he word things so badly.
Dr. Perez is a great professor. I had him last semester and while his class was certainly difficult it was also manageable. Go to class and you will get a good grade I never missed a class and I managed to get an A. The only reason students dislike him is because they are lazy and he has high expectations of his students, he is also extremely funny
He is the worst professor. I had him and my friends had him as well. If I were you I'd think twice.
First off don't believe any of the positive comments this professor has gotten, at the beginning of the semester he gave his socl 314 classes 5 pts on a test to give him a good rating on this website. This was before we all knew how awful a teacher he was.
Do yourself a favor and choose another teacher for this class. He hates MAT students, he repeatedly called the masters you receive a "certificate" and refused to call it a masters even after he was corrected. He called the program "fake" and said it wasn't a real masters program. Just save yourself the abuse and choose a professor who cares.
I would not recommend this class at all. He is funny and nice, but that doesn't make up for anything. There are so few grades (3) that to do semi-poorly once can destroy you. I went to his office hours twice a week, and studied on my own. I was 100% confident in myself going into the test. When I received a C, he refused to show me my test.
Refused to let me see test that I worked so hard on. Only 3 grades in entire class. Sense of humor doesn't make up for anything. Not a good class to take. He said the first day he didn't really care enough to learn our names...
Can anyone say sexual harassment?! Perez is horrible! He thinks he's funny but all of his jokes are just about how stupid everyone else is. He literally tells students at the beginning of the year that he doesn't care about them. He also writes his own comments on here so be weary!
