Kind of easy, fairly knowledgable, but quite boring
lectures boring, goes very fast, does examples wrong sometimes, tests hard
This guy doesn't give a d***, switch teachers if you can!
Change you class. You will not learn anything.
He knows the subject but is sometimes hard to follow.
Knows the stuff, but cant teach it. Test hard, but grades on curve (sometimes).
Worst teacher, didn't learn much, know's his stuff, just can't teach it.
Tests are difficult and lectures are long and boring.
Confusing lectures... Didn't really learn anything

Don't take his class if you can help it!!!!
He has made pchem an enjoyable class but doesn't spoonfeed students.
He'll always answer questions and he's a great guy
He couldnt explain how water forms to a chem mjaor
He doesn't GIVE good grades away - you have to work; but I learned so much! :)
I didn't learn anything! Knows his stuff but can't teach it, switch if you can!
One of the smartest guys on campus, very amusing, but HORRIBLE TEACHER!
very smart, but hard to follow in lecture. read the book!
Intelligent, but VERY disorganized. Forgets what he assigned a lot.
very smart guy but does not know how to teach
not very helpful, hard to understand, flies through lab trying to get you out
Great guy, very intelligent, too lazy to teach
He does not know what he is talking about. Do not get him as a professor!!!
Very unorganized and hard to follow. Tests are a nightmare.

Very, very unorganized, Exams are hideous, do not get him as a prof
This guy is horrible, GET A DIFFERENT TEACHER!!!
If you like to get test grades that are 50% or below, this is the guy to choose
HIS CLASS WILL KILL YOUR GPA
all you ppl who think he's cool.....burn!
Be ready to lower ur GPA, and waste entire semester Since Chem takes up 1/3!!!!!
This guy is ridiculous. he thinks he's the chem god.

this is the worst prof i've ever had. Knows his stuff, but can't teach it.
Not a good teacher, but i'm sure he is a nice guy... Hard to follow, hard tests.
TOO MUCH RAMBLING!!!!! I can't follow a lecture for more than 10 minutes.

he sucks...no point in saying anything else.
He is very hard to follow in class and can't explain things well at all
He is terrible!! Get out of his class

Not a GPA killer if you study, but he is an unclear teacher
never admits he's wrong, boring, hard to follow, horrible lectures/pop grp quizz
makes extensive use of website, horribly boring lectures, imcomprhensible
If he tested on what he taught, maybe I could have done well.
somehow I pulled a C out of the class. he must've been in a manic episode
easy class
he is horribly unorganized and does not test on anything he goes over in class.

Hated this class. Dreaded going to it. Take another Gen. Ed. if you can.
EXTREMELY BORING, lame class, but pretty easy
run!!

not very organized, but forgiving of students lack of organization. uh, he doesn't seem as interested in teaching as other profs. but he does know what he's talking about. get kind of an avr. prof. Lectures can get boring if everyone is class just sits
grades on the curve alot.

The only thing good about him is that he curves a lot - only because all of his students fail and he doesn't want to be fired. He is smart, but a horrible teacher, makes his students feel dumb when asking questions, tests are often very hard to finish
Took two years of honors chem inhighschool and still did horrible in class. His tests do not go off of notes or the book. Our last test he took out 5 questions and the class avg was still a 67%! DONT TAKE HIM!
his tests are really hard and he's not a good teacher at all. he knows what he's talking about but doesn't explain it well. i think he's pretensious and cocky.
Awesome class and prof. Learned a lot from him. This was a good course
kill me now! i dropped his class and i'm going to take ROCKS instead. don't make the mistake of signing up for him! tries to be nice but IT'S ALL AN ACT! thinks his is your only class. TOOOO MUCH WORK!
In padnos, hard to hear because of those fan-machines that suck up chemical vapors. He doesn't go into too much detail and doesnt make a whole lot of sense. I did not feel prepared for tests, but probably more my fault than his. just too hard to hear.
With this being a junior seminar the workload tends to be much lighter. The beginning of the semester was very interesting while the second half not so much. He's a nice guy but sometimes hard to read. He knows his stuff much better than he knows how to teach it. I'm glad I took the class, though.
An expert in his field, and he lets you know. Wasn't an especially great teacher, but this class was easier then my High School Chem, so it wasn't a big deal. Boring, pompous, but not bad. As long as your not a science major there's no reason not to take his class.
This is in regard to the junior seminar "cosmology for poets." Very easy class, hardly any work. He seemed a unprepaired for class on some occasions. He worked hard to make it interesting for non-science people. No actual poetry writing in the class. A bit self-centered but personable.
One word: RIDICULOUS. It's supposedto be ror a class for non-science majors, however he doesn't really care about that. You need extensive knowledge to follow what he's talking about. He's super full of himself, and complains that we don't "read enough newspapers." Drop this class and take rocks.
He liked to brag, but not explain things very well. It was like he tried to make it harder than it is.
do not take this class! he's sucks really bad. I had to drop to save my gpa! does not care class is for non sci majors.
This professor is really easy. I thought this class was going to be difficult, but as long as you do the readings and half pay attention in class, the exams are easy and he grades easy overall. His granding scale was skewd so a 90% and higher was an A, A- was 87-90. I had a 98 the whole class. Everyone in my class agreed that it was SO easy!
I thought Professor Baum was a great professor. He always made sure that I understood and always had time for questions. He also encouraged the entire class to do better. I think the class was challenging but an A is achievable.
Homework is a lot, but he doesn't really check it. Class is important because we do labs in class and he checks and grades those. He's pretty boring, but over-all it's easy. 90% is an A, and it's definitely doable.
Overall a good professor. The class is pretty easy, the exams can be a little tricky though. He's very understanding and knows that you are not a science major. Very flexible with due dates, fairly easy to get an A or A- with little effort.
Loved Dr. Baum. He is endearing in an old-man/grandpa sort of way. Very passionate about chemistry and renewable energy. Organized class and lectures. Helpful with labs and pretty lenient with late hw. He has a great sense of humor once you get to know him. Tailors the class for non-science majors and makes the material intersting and relevant.
Professor Baum is awesome.
Baum was just the WORST. Really unclear, made a lot of mistakes during is lecture that he had to correct, which made him extra confusing and hard to follow. I would never ever recommend taking his class. Also treated us like little kids assigning roles like "group spy" to get info from other table groups. Cheesy and annoying.
Professor Baum is a fantastic guy. He's got a dry sense of humor and comes off as a little intimidating, but he's a really nice guy. His class is an absolute cake-walk if you read the book. The lectures are pointless but you learn from the labs. Homework every week but the grading is very easy. Gives you a pizza party during finals week! Loved him.
Baum was pretty good considering I have no interest in chemistry. The class does a good job of making what you learn relevant to life outside a classroom. Baum knows his stuff really well and that is pretty obvious from the start. For nonscience majors in the honors college I'd say he's definitely the way to go. Not too difficult to do well in.
Professor Baum is a nice guy with good intentions. He attempts to make Chemistry fun for non-science majors by making it life applicable. Does not grade homework or labs, does them for credit no credit. As long as you pay attention and study his guides for the 3 tests (worth 70% of grade) it is not too bad. 90 or higher is an A.
Professor Baum is really passionate about chemistry. He understood that my class was not for science majors and did not attempt to make us learn lots of details. It was easy if you came to the lectures and payed attention. He loves to interact with the students.
He's a really nice old man. There are three exams that determine your grade but he lets you do corrections for half the point back. No midterm or Final. All the homework is done online.
Professor Baum doesn't care if you are in class or not. All of the homework is out of the book but you get grades for effort, not correctness. Tests are a piece of cake and if you get less than an A you can do test corrections. He makes the class fun and lets us out early often.
Assigned few projects and decided on the spot what they would be. Attempted to teach about Art History without any understanding of it or qualifications to do so. Students were responsible for grading each others presentations. He was removed from the course part way through the semester.
Gives partial credit back for exams and grades homework/labs based on effort! Lectures are rather lengthy, but it's worth it for sure
Professor Baum is super smart and a great teacher. Hes not very strict, and his class is pretty easy. Hes perfect for students that arent science majors because his lectures can be applied to real life and he realizes that science isnt the main focus for many students.
This class very hard to fail. He doesnt check homework for correctness, you could leave answers not done and will still get a 100% on the HW. Pop quizzes but once again he will still give you a 100% even if you leave things blank. To me his tests were pretty hard but somehow I could still get a 90% or higher because he gives test corrections
Prof Baum does not care about anything lol. We took a chem test and I literally thought about dropping the class, because he does not teach. I ended up getting a B+ on it and I was SHOOK. I am not a science major, so I found this part of the class to be really challenging.
His class was perfect for non-science majors. Lectures could be dry, but the class activities weren't bad. Only one end of the year paper. Homework was not graded for accuracy. His test were hard but I feel like he was a lenient grader and he also gave us the opportunity to do test corrections. He clearly cares about his student's doing well.
If you need a science class with a lab, but you aren't very interested in science, this is the class for you. Super dry lectures, but it's nearly impossible to get below an A. Homework is credit / no credit and you can do exam corrections if you managed to do poorly on one. Don't expect to learn much, although some of the concepts are interesting.
Lectures were sooo boring and he often did math problems wrong, so be prepared to teach yourself the material if you actually want to learn. His class was super easy because he did open book tests and test corrections, so an easy A if you try a little bit. However, we learned nothing about chem, just that acid rain and greenhouse gases were bad.
This class was an easy A. Homework was graded for completeness. Test corrections were allowed. Lectures were usually dull. Baum is a nice guy, but it was hard to learn what was on the test when the homework had no corrections, because I never knew if I understood the material. Used Khan Academy when necessary and did fine.
Baum is a nice guy. He gives study guides as well as goes over the study guide the class before the exam. He allows you to do test corrections for half the points back on the exams and all of the homework is online. He is a quiet talker and can be hard to hear.
Baum is a nice guy, but his lectures tend to be super boring and not interesting. The book comes with a code online that you use to do homework, so don't buy the actual one if you want. He does let you do test corrections for half the credit back on exams. He's super boring in his lectures though.
I would definitely recommend this professor for CHM 102. Professor Baum made this class exceptionally easy, and as long as you do your online assignments its an easy A. He also allows test corrections for half points back on all exams. He rarely takes attendance, but showing up will definitely make tests easier. Great professor overall!
Easy A /B+, but Prof Baum even stated that a lot of what he says isn't what we need to know, and he will ramble on about information that is not relevant. This creates an overload of information that is harder to process. He also doesn't explain anything well, if at all. Nice guy but arguably the worst professor I've had at GVSU, and I'm a junior.
I would definitely recommend this professor for CHM 102. Professor Baum made this class exceptionally easy, and as long as you do your online assignments its an easy A. He also allows test corrections for half points back on all exams. He really wants his students to succeed.
