lectures are interesting. nice guy. very helpful. he gives the essay questions on syllabus as well as key terms for scantron exams.
Teacher sucked... lectures whole class.... never gives A's....
Talks the whole class but makes classes interesting class is not too hard. Difficult to do good on his essay question tests. Best history teacher i've had in a long time
No Comments
I just finished his Cold War class and it was awesome. He is extremely knowledgeable and is an excellent teacher. Do the reading and take good notes in class and it is a breeze. Just don't let him make you read "The Quiet American".
best teacher i've had at ncc. He knows what he is talking about and adds humor to his lectures. I would reccomend him to anyone who is taking western civ 101. I got an A by taking good notes and using the text book to prepare for essay exams.
Funny, informative lectures, no homework, no project,s and relatively essay tests. You learn alot while not being burdened by the course.
Taking this class was a very good experience. Very interesting, and funny guy. If there is anything you don't understand, he will have no problem explaining it. Has some good stories to tell to accompany lectures.
Im not a history buff, but he made this class interesting. He has good lectures and adds humor to the material. take good notes and study for the essay tests.
Great teacher, funny, quick witted, and very intellegent. good man too. You work with him, and he'll work right back. Bring a tape recorder ;)
He is an excellent teacher. He explains everything in detail and is very smart. You could tell he knows his stuff and he makes the class so interesting. I love his sarcastic humor and when he talks about his adventures in Europe. He can be hot sometimes and I love his mustache andlong puffy hair.
sooooo easy, i pulled of an A with ease. If you have trouble with this class, i suggest rethinking your strategy in regards to school.. You will never take a hist class at a 4 year school that is as easy as this. anyways, he is intelligent and belongs at a research university
this teacher is a must have. easy class, easy grader and most of all keeps you awake!
Very interesting and funny but strict about grades
even though i got a c ... i still love him. he makes the past reality, he's freaking amazing, i reccommend him like crazy
Overall great professor
pretty much everything was said about boyden and its true. he was a pivotal person in my life. he intensified my desire for knowledge. i am truly grateful for the gift he has...teaching at its finest...
I am not a history person at all, and he basically just walks into the class and talks for an hour and 15 minutes straight. His Medieval History class bores me to death. Then for homework he assigns like 100 pages of some boring history novel each class.
He is funny at times but you will be annoyed by him.
He's a great teacher, right, and he's not out to give you a hard time, right, he wants to learn and do well, right. Just make sure you don't talk when he's talking or make comments about his hair lol
awesome prof, really fun classes, just pay attention and its an easy grade. midevil was the best class, really interesting. DO NOT TALK WHILE HES TALKING OR HE WILL SHOW HIS FURY!!! otherwise awesome person!
He is a great teacher. Take notes for the essay tests and you'll be fine. His tests are easy if you know all the definitions. He makes class really interesting. Make sure you participate cuz you get brownie points that way.
THIS GUY IS GREAT. SO SMART, FUNNY, INTERESTING, HELPFUL, ENTERTAINING, GOOD STORIES, FAIR, JUST GREAT. A LOT OF HOMEWORK BUT TEST ARE EASY IF YOU READ AND PAY ATTENTION. DONT LEAVE YOUR CELL PHONE ON OR TALK DURING CLASS, HE IS INSANE ABOUT THAT :)
He is the coolest teacher! You can learn a lot about Europe from him, because he tells about his experience there which is very interesting. Just do all the assignments and you will pass. Just rememeber to leave your cell phone off during his class because he goes nuts if the phone rings.
probably the best teacher i've ever had, if you like history take any class with him, he's the man
Awesome lecturer. I did not find his class at all boring. His essay tests are not hard, he just grades VERY hard. You have to write EVERY WORD he says about the topic to get full credit for each question.
He's brilliant. You learn so much from. Sometimes it gets a little dull but he knows how to get your attention back. The tests are only hard IF you don't study. If you don't study then it's easy to fail. You don't just learn about history, you learn about or things as well, like never move a lawn chair in chicago... best story ever!
He knows his stuff. His grading is amost impossible though. Essay test = C+ and C++++...yes, four plusses!? Vry interesting but make sure you know your infrmation to the "." for he tests, because he expects you to know what he knows.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He shows up late everyday. He grades hard where no one can get an A. He contradicts himself by saying he won't take off points only if the answer is clearly wrong but will give extra points if there is additional information. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS unless u want a C average or worse.
Hes a pretty entertaining teacher and overall he's really cool.there are A LOT of notes;like 5 pages per class.i studied really hard for his tests and still only received a B.no one in my class got an A on any essay test.the class is incredibly hard to get an A.if you're looking to keep your GPA high, dont take this class,no matter how cool he is.
This class is a lot of fun.Interesting if you like Medieval stuff. He is a funny teacher. He's very unorganized and tardy.(If that bothers you.)Notes everyday. 3 Essay Tests.3 Exams. 3 Quizes. Need Texts: Medieval Europe A short sourcebook, A Medieval Europe A short history, The lais of marie de France and The Vinland Sagas.
Tooooo unorganized! I'm usually an A student...and I only got a C+ in his class!
Great guy and very smart. Learned alot from this man. Was very helpful and would clearly clarify hard and complex lessons.
Dr. Boyden is an interesting professor to say the least. He does know his stuff plus more. He dictates almost everything. He's pretty funny to watch. He paces back and forth with his long hair flipping around and always quotes monty python and the quest for the holy grail. when he tell you what to study, make sure you study it.
you really need to be able to pay attention and take extreme notes.he allows 10 absenses, which is a miracle for ncc. he doesn't emphasize studying the text, but you should. his tests are kinda random compared to the notes. he's pretty funny and knows everything about what he teaches (mideval hist in my case-- and he looks the part)
best history professors in ncc
Really hard grader when it comes to essay exams. Definately study the textbook and the vocabulary after every chapter. His classes are amazing, really funny teacher. Keeps you interested the entire semester.
Professor Boyden may look crazy but he's extremely smart. H lectures A LOT so be prepared to take down as many notes as possible. You'll need them to pass his Essay exams. His quiz's are multiple choice and pulled from textbook vocabulary words. Overall, he makes it easy to pass his class. DO NOT get intimidated by him!
DO NOT take this class if you enjoy not being given notes, and if you enjoy listening to straight lecturing for an hour and a half. Test's are fair. VERY BORING CLASS, and you hardly will use the textbook. Nice guy, but hard class. I would suggest not taking.
I've taken his Medieval History class a few years ago and it's definitely changed for the better. He's a great professor, and yes he does take a lot of notes (this is college kids, what are you doing here if you aren't taken notes?) He's a very funny guy and is a hard grader, but when he says read the text book, READ IT. It will help you out! He
looks like a lead singer for a 70s heavy metal band, pretty sure he lives for music, in fact id be shocked if he didnt love zeppelin and other classic rock music. his class is a straight lecture, but he lets his students ask questions and make points. makes it easy to understand by making analogies to modern things kids would get. recommend him
Professor Boyden is an excellent teacher. He makes the class very interesting and entertaining. I was very impressed with the way he handled the middle ages, especially where it coincides with the history of Christianity.
Great Professor..sexy man jk Prof Edward is very humble and nice take his class and you will sure make your History knowledge more greater after you take his class..Enjoy his class!!!!
Professor Edward is awesome...Looooveee him I enjoyed every class! I was still sad when his class ended really I will Never Forget him or his class.I miss you terribly Professor Edward. We all need more Professors like Professor Boyden..You made my History soo much better since I been in your class thanks Professor boyden thank you so much...:)
Talks the whole time doesn't give notes, very funny! if you are a person who needs notes be careful
Professor Boyden is an amazing teacher who takes the time to really explain his material. The only negative thing about his class are the 5 point quizes they are really hard to get a good grade on, but there only five points. Overall he is a great teacher.
Great professor!
he's great! at first i couldnt quite figure him out. he seemed strick, non conformist, has an interesting hair style, opens every class with an announcement to put all phones away (you'll see) but as the semester goes on he is relaxed and funnier. his quizes are based on the vocab in the txt book, essay exams come from your lecture notes. take him!
He's a funny dude that will keep you entertained during class. He doesn't care about absences and will let you make up any missed test or quiz. There's alot of readings with occasional pop quizzes, so be sure to keep up! He's kind of a hard grader on papers and his lectures have lots of unnecessary material, but overall he's a great professor!
I did horribly on his quizzes and still got an A! I could never seem to study the right material for the quizzes. He adds 2 points your participation grade every day that you speak. It's an easy way to make up for missed points on quizzes or tests! All essays are in class. Just do the work and ask about your average so he knows you're trying.
Prof. Boyden is a intelligent, humerous, and overall fantastic professor. He loves the subject and knows the material inside and out. His quizes and tests are challenging so studying from the textbook + lecture notes are a must. However, the final is the easiest exam in the world. I wish I could take every history class with him.
He's one of the smartest professors at Nassau. He knows everything about history and can go into depth about events and dates without ever looking at a text book. He has great stories and is a pretty cool guy. He lets you make up any test before the end of the semester and any essay before the next essay. Overall he's a pretty awesome guy.
This guy can teach. Easily one of the smartest professors i've had the pleasure of having, yet at the same time hes got a pretty hilarious sense of humor and manages to make class literally fly by. Im surprised he's never been asked to be one of those talking heads on the history channel. Also a fair grader and very easygoing personality.
very knowledgeable, makes every topic interesting, has funny stories, and lets students make up things they've missed. I had him for a summer course, and I think he's a better professor than anybody at my home university
What a dedicated and interesting professor! He wants the work and the reading done & he wants to help you do well. If you do the reading & do quality work, you get good grades. This is college, not high school, and he expects you to know the difference. He also makes himself available for questions and help. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
Good Proffesor
Really Good Proffesor
Absolutely love him he's an awesome teacher highly reccomend
Professor Boyden is a good Professor, kind and treats his students nice and is a really terrific Professor.Take his class, you will learn a lot from him! And that's a promise!:)
Highly recommend this teacher. He knows exactly what he is talking about and he is willing to help his students. He also has really funny stories and is just all together an easy-going professor. Would take him again in a heartbeat.
Great Professor! very clear! Really knows what he's talking about. Give you alot of time to make up the tests and essays. There's 3 quizzes and 3 essay tests. The final has the exact same questions as the 3 quizzes. You can just repeat wht he said in lectures for essays but you need to read the txtbk to do good on the quiz (all multiple choice)
I would suggest definitely taking him. He really knows what he is talking about and makes it easy to understand. He uses examples from today' world that make you understand things that happened way back when. His quizzes are a bit difficult, but his tests are simple. He tells you the answers to the quizzes and uses those questions on the final.
THE BEST PERSON!!! If you participate he will know who you are and pass you! Easy going and kind!
This class was my favorite all semester. He gives you 4 "surprise" quizzes, two essays(creative writing type of essays) and a mid term and final. Do the reading, pay attention and participate (good for the grade & he gets to know who you are) This is a class to take! ENJOY & GOOD LUCK
This guy was AWESOME! He's got a condescending sense of humor, but never condescends to the students. Definitely a rebel hippy in his youth haha you can miss class if you want, you can show up late to class if you want...at the end of the day his philosophy is: If you miss class, you're only going to make it more difficult for yourself. GREAT prof.
I learnt so much in this class and it was very enjoyable! You get extra credit each day you participte, so make sureyou do the reading. He gives 4 quizzes based on the last reading, 2 tests (he gives you a study guide),and 2 essays that are kind of like creative writing. He says he's a hard grader but he isn't that bad.
professor is awesome just pay attention to your notes and actually read your book and you will pass
Professor Boyden speaks a lot and sometimes goes off too much on his rants about his days in Europe but he's funny as well. His quizzes are solely based on the textbook, they are pretty hard. He gives out three written exams those are easier than the quizzes.
Very good
horrific! he just rambles on about the most irrelevant topics that have nothing to do with the actual class itself. nothing is ever clear and non of the material he teaches in class is on his tests. waste of time, drop as soon as you can.
BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR!
Boyden is the man. I took Hist of Medieval World and WestCiv 1 with him. He is definitely a character. He gets off topic with funny personal stories, but he gets the info you need out and if he doesnt bc he runs out of time, he wont expect you to know it anyway. Fair grader, fair workload, interesting well traveled funny guy. Cant say enough good!
3 Essay Tests and 4 Pop Quizzes and the Final was the Pop Quizzes put together (which you have all the answers to). Class is easy if you do your reading homework and show up to class to take notes. Prof. Boyden also tells funny stories in class about his life as he traveled to many places. Id definately take him again.
Amazing! Would take him again if I needed another History class. Gives unlimited absences & allows you to make up missed tests & quizes. As long as you read the material you will pass the quizzes. All tests are in essay format but he gives you a cheat sheet a week prior to the exam. He's a tough grade on tests so make sure you explain yourself!
Takes forever to give back essays and grades. Could care less if you show up or not. Lectures are boring listening to him talk the whole time. He doesn't even write down anything on the board. I wouldn't take him again.
If you enjoy history, Professor Boyden is the man... Extremely easy going, fun style of lecture, and smart dude. Its up to the student to take a bunch of notes, he will usually tell you what to really focus on and will prep you for your "essay" tests. Sounds hard but its very simple when you study and jot down everything game day. #EinsteinsNephew
Prof Boyden is the man!!!!! Gives you good prep for his "essay test" also gives you clues when there will be a "pop" quiz so you are aware of it, goes off topic sometimes but it somehow connects to the lesson we are learning about, fair grader but it is up to the student to pass because he doesn't give much work and he explains everything well
Without a doubt one of the best professors at NCC and certainly the best History professor. His lectures are fantastic and you need to take notes. Extra credit is given if you participate. He really could be teaching at a much better college but he stays at Nassau.
Professor Boyden is a very laid back teacher, attendance isnt mandatory and he doesnt care if you purchase the textbook or not. His lectures are very long and he tends to sway off topic majority of the time. He announces when he is giving out a surprise quiz and gives out study sheets for his essay exams.
Oddest grading I ever received But hes amazing Doesnt care how late you are Hes amazing Dresses weird tho but hes amazing
Gives really interesting lectures with his sense of humor and passion for the subject he teaches. It's a fun class to show up to, even if you don'y plan on doing much work.
Doesn't care about attendance, but if you like the topic of the class, I'd suggest attending because his lectures are entertaining and informative. You don't need to buy the medieval history textbooks, he will send you links to the material. Quizzes are on the reading material but are easy (you only have to answer two questions per quiz).
Fantastic teacher! Interesting classes and makes the course subject easy to understand.
He tells you from the start what it takes to pass this course. Attendance is not mandatory (there are pop quizzes though) but he makes the class so interesting that you will want to show up regardless. History is not my favorite subject but I learned so much and kept it super interesting. Great professor!
He is a great professor who gives very clear lectures, and tries being as specific as possible. The only homework we really had was to read the assigned chapters for his quizzes. However, his exams (except the final) are essay based. Although attendance isn't mandatory, I'd recommend just going to class anyway because he does verbal lecture.
a detailed lecture over zoom but has a great personality. says exactly what you need and keeps you interested theres 15 students in my class on zoom (all cameras off)and we still all interact in the class without feeling forced. essay tests& textbook quizzes. dont buy the textbook if you listen to lecture i got to return mine before the sem ended
Professor boyden is truly passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. Attendance is optional but his lectures are so interesting if you like the subject matter. Participation is key to boosting your grade so try and do so. Super subjective/tough grader, Submit to him for revisions before deadlines for help.
He's so entertaining and clearly very passionate about what he teaches. As long as you pay attention during lectures you won't really even need the textbook.
he's a great teacher and you can tell he really enjoys what he teaches. he's super knowledgeable about so many things, you could honestly ask him a question about anything and he can talk about it. the paper assignments were very weird though because theyre not the normal research paper type. overall a good prof and id recommend him
Professor Boyden is someone I would recommend to anyone even slightly interested in learning about medieval history. Has a sense of humor and amazing storytelling that kept my whole class engaged. Keep on top of the reading though!
He is a good professor and very knowledgeable in what he is teaching about. However, his essays are nearly impossible to get over an 80 on. He is a very tough grader and will write comments all over the text saying "no idea what this means" when it is something he has specifically said in class.
An excellent professor. His lectures are interesting and he allows you to ask any question and he will answer it. Attendance is important to pass and despite his difficult essays, he allows make-up essays and make-up quizzes. If you participate with comments and questions, he gives extra points and you can raise your grade by a half letter.
I thought this professor would be excellent after seeing that he had a high rating, but he was the opposite. He is the most challenging essay grader I have ever had. I had so much criticism that was even constructive, written into a 500-word essay test. His comments are belittling and harsh. It is very difficult to get an A on the essays!
His lectures are really interesting. He is very knowledgeable on the history of the middle ages. The papers he assigns are very interesting, you have to think creatively.
The best humanities class I've attended as a STEM major - I wasn't stressed to achieve a good grade in this class, focusing instead on learning the history. You don't have to show up to lectures if they have nothing to do with your quizzes/essay exams, but the lectures are entertaining so you'll probably want to show up anyway.
I read below someone said his fashion taste is questionable but I definitely disagree. Would take again, I wish there was a part two, the sequel.
Pretty good professor. Gives lots of information in class, so long as you take notes you shouldn't have too much of an issue. Can be quite funny too. Quizzes are annoying and hard to know what they're on unless you have the ability to see the future. Tough grader and gives unnecessary feedback on essays, I just ignore it though. A good professor
I was really looking forward to taking this class because the subject sounded interesting and timely. Unfortunately this professor did not seem to know much about the topic and wasn't very helpful. In today's political climate this is a very important class and Nassau should have a better teacher for it.
Very disappointing experience! This professor was totally clueless about women's history and ignored current issues.
Boyden was the best professor I took at NCC, alongside Cage. His passion for the history of Western Civ is contagious, specifically the Middle Ages. He is very student-minded, and his utilization of Brightspace reflects that. I recommend his class on the Middle Ages. He is receptive to student's ideas and understanding of their outside lives.
The best! Mildly disorganized lectures, which some students may struggle with, but all of the information on tests/essays is included within and those who pay attention will be fine. Great professor, very self-aware of the purpose of being an educator. One of the best educators from my scholastic experience.
