He is a miserable professor
A great Guy
I will kill myself before taking a class from him again.

Easy but very boring. Do all his papers/projects and you'll be fine grade wise, but classes are amazingly uninformative/boring.
Nicest Guy in the world....
Boring lecture. Easy class.
Although some people thought the class was boring, I love the examples, stories and illustrations he used to bring the topics to live and relate them to real life situations
Boring lectures, yes, but he is so nice.
He's fine. I didn't do well but that wasn't his fault. The class he teaches is just so boreing. The book sucked! I never went to class.
He is so nice, which is why it is so hard to be mean here. His lectures almost never deviate from the notes he posts online. He tends to be forgetful/disorganized with lower level courses, and he isn't a very energetic speaker. His TAs really know their stuff, I had a great time in my sociology lab, but my lecture attendance was so freaking bad.
Lectures are reallyh boring! He posts the notes on webct and thats exactly the lecture. Takes attendance points with 'clickers'. Uses SA Grader to grade assignments although there not too hard once you figure out the SA Grader system. In my lab we student taught a chapter as well as attendance points. He test was very difficult for me! However the
Take attendance with clickers. I read magazines during class since i had to be there. Posts exact notes online. Homework but not to hard once you figure out SAGrader system. Don't plagerize use "According to the text..." Text is online you have to buy this (no book from book store) Test were difficult but are slightly curved. Do the extra credit!
EXTREMELY BORING!! All I do in class is read books and magazines. It's all slideshows and video clips....no book work at all. BUT SOOOOO BORING!!! Avoid this class just because of the risk of dying of boredom.
Lecture was really boring. He pretty much just reads you the power point, but you have to go to class since he takes attendance with clickers. His Exams are scantron and weekly assignments are graded by SA grader, a computer program. (SA grader sucks!) He doesn't do****. Everything is graded by a computer. Basically I didn't like him much.
Lectures are boring... extremely boring. The work is easy, SAGrader is a joke especially because you get an unlimited number of tries.
Dont take this class if you have Ed, I try to make it through his oring lectures and find myself either falling asleep or wishing that I was dead. He is useless the only reason anyone goes is because we have these stupid clicker questions. If you ever had an interest in any kind of sociology field forget about it due to this horrible class.(teacher
EXTREMELY boring. Takes attendance with clicker, & all notes are online. Played Tetris & Facebooked the whole time after clicking in for attendance & lecture questions. His stats are way outdated too (1994 is recent data for him) which makes one question their relevance. Lectures consist of him reading his powerpoints, which are online.
All of the lecture notes are online and he NEVER deviates from the slides. A ridiculously easy A, you have unlimited submissions on SA Grader assignments which are 60% of your grade. Despite how easy this course is I would not recommend taking it... Brent is a great guy and clearly knows his stuff, but skip this class and take an upper level...
Terribly boring class. If you did not get an A in this class I feel sorry for you. Homework is worth sixty percent of the grade
This is such an easy class, but it is boring beyond belief. He puts all of his lecture notes online, so the textbook is not necessary except for the SAgrader code inside of it. Don't take this class unless you want to be bored out of your mind!
The class was really boring, and even though he takes attendance via the clicker, I still skipped almost half the classes and still received an A. But I have to admit he seems like a nice guy. He tries to make the class interesting, but hey, it's basic sociology. How much fun can you make it? Just ace the assignments and you'll be fine.
Easiest Sociology class at Mizzou!.. Yea it's boring but just show up to class with your clicker and you can Facebook all day. Homework is 60% of the grade and its all online.. super easy!!!
If you do not get an A in this class you will not get an A in any class at Mizzou... it is easy, I did all of the SAGrader assignmetns and got 100 because they are unlimited submitions and worth 60% of your grade as well as the Extra Credit which is 5% added to your final grade... if you do this an A will be guananteed, just don't BOMB the tests!
The class is dry, but definitely worth taking to get an easy A and still learn something. He seems like a nice guy, but the lectures weren't too interesting. Just come to class with your clicker and keep doing the assignments until you get 100%. There are unlimited submissions on most of them.
Extremely boring class. I went to every class. Tests are decently hard because they are so big, but he gives a 5% curve. Professor doesn't really teach, he pretty much just reads the slides. Online homework is easy and you get to submit them until you get the grade you want. I would not recommend this teacher. I did not learn anything.
Very boring class. Professor only reads the powerpoint, which is on blackboard, to you and attendance is graded. The online homework can be frustrating, but easy because you get an unlimited number of submissions. Tests are relatively hard. Homework is majority of grade, though. Don't recommend the class, especially with this teacher.
BORING BORING CLASS. I've never been so bored in my life. Used a program called essay grader which is horrible. Used clickers which were almost as horrible as the computer program that grades your essays. DON'T take this professor for Intro to Sociology.
Definitely do not take him for Intro to Sociology. Though the topic is interesting, the teacher was awful. Book was awful, easy grader program was awful, clickers were interesting but obnoxious. If you end up with him, try as hard as you can to switch out! Easy grade, though.
For Intro into sociology - your book is key. Dont even take notes..bring your book and highlight. All the powerpoints are taken straight from the book. DONT ignore SAgrader..its annoying but helps your grade alot, show up for the clicker and just guess on the questions!! Oh! and on essay grader just make it simple a "quote" the book.
Professor was absolutely useless. I love Sociology, but his Intro to Sociology class is horrible. SAGrader is horrendous, the clickers are horrible. I was having trouble with my clicker, and the professor knows nothing about how they work. Don't take this class.
Introduction to Sociology 1000 was by far the stupidest and most useless class I'd ever taken. Mostly because of the professor, Ed Brent. The class houses at least 400 people, yet he still makes attendance mandatory by electronic sign-in (which he doesn't even know how to use.) He is also Incredibly boring to listen to. I fell asleep every lecture.
He is one of the best professor i have ever taken class with. Enthusiastic, helpful and understanding. Be regular to his class, you get lot out of his class.
The class itself is super easy, but lectures are boring and he doesn't know how to even use the technology he demands we use.
Professor Brent is a decent teacher, but his hour and a half lectures are super boring. You have to attend for the most part though because he uses clickers to take attendance, even though he doesn't know how to use technology most of the time.
The SA Grader assignments were somewhat easy (and you get unlimited attempts to boost your grade), but they pretty much required you to copy straight out of the book for the program to recognize it as a valid answer. Pretty nice guy, pretty easy class if you do the work and pay attention to the lectures.
I fall asleep if I'm not on Facebook in that class. The tests are critical thinking application questions & he only goes over basic stuff in class. I learned more basic sociology in my 1650 social deviance class. The essay grader just gives you points, no learning involved. Do not take this class with this teacher.
His lectures are boring but if you actually read the textbook [which he wrote himself so you can't sell back :( ], you will do fine on the tests. The homework is graded online via SAGrader, but you get as many attempts at it as you want until you are satisfied with your grade (I got 100% on all of them because you can just keep doing them).
lecureare boing, he reads straight off the powerpoint, which corenspondes with exactly what the book said since he wrote it. SAGraders are easy and give you multiple attempts until you get 100% or desired grade. 4 exams and clickers points.
Would go to class to get clicker points, but I would put in my headphones and either read the book or sit on Facebook. I learned a lot more from the book than his lectures. His test are HARD, but since he offers SAGrader, you can still get an A. Just do all the SAGrader's till you get a 100%, and it is a guaranteed A.
Online assignments are easy. They are straight out of the book and you can do them as many times as you'd like. The tests are very hard. I studied for all three and didn't do well. Still entirely possible to get an A in the class. Overall very boring. No final exam, though.
If you can't manage an A in this class, you never will. That being said, this class is terribly boring and all of his notes come directly from the book that he wrote which you must use for the class. The online assignments are easy and you can resubmit them until you have a 100. Class is a waste of time but he uses clickers for attendance.
Horrible horrible class. This class is so boring I never wanted to go but there are clicker points. But when I do go I zone out before he gets to the second slide. Apparently you can get all the information out of the book but the book is Mizzou published and horrible. Homework is a majority of the grade and is super easy though.
This is honestly the worst class I have every taken. The professor is horrible. His lectures put people to sleep, the work is annoying, and the tests are hard. This class is a waste of time. Find a different professor. Also the extra credit is him trying to get you to buy his other book for the answers.
Horrible class. Professor is incredibly boring and the class doesn't help you at all but you still have to go because of his clicker questions. SAGrader assignments aren't bad but they're annoying. His tests are hard because his study guides are poorly written. Interesting course with a horrible teacher. Do not take!
Boring lectures but have to be there because he uses clickers, SAGrader makes the course an easy A, and the tests are pretty straightforward and he provides study guides. Take it with him if you are willing to do about 2 hours a week of homework. Not bad.
Very helpful, intelligent and friendly professor I have ever taken class with. Even though his lectures are boring once in a while, he is willing to help students and give enough time on the course materials. Take class with him if you actually want to learn
Supppppppppper boring. The only reason I go to class is because we get participation points via i-clicker. I would'nt take this tacher I had could go back in time.
STAY AWAY FROM HIM!!!! This is the worst class I have ever had. He sucks as a teacher. If it wasn't for clicker points I would have never gone. His lectures are very old and are copy and paste from the book which he wrote. This class is awful, stay away from it.
Brent goes very fast on his power points , however he posts them online. Clicker points are your participation gradeattendance. Also, the exams can be difficult but don't worry because they are only 30% of your grade. The majority of your grade comes from SAGraders , which are easy and helpful for future assignments.
I took this my first semester here and it will more than likely be the worst class I ever take. He forces you to buy his book that he wrote & it's expensive because it includes a code to an essay website that he created himself. You have to go to class for clicker points. Basically he wants to jip your money, so save it and don't take this class.
The class is fairly easy. I got a perfect on every SA grader assignment. I read the entire book which he wrote himself. I didn't really take notes or pay attention in the lecture because its the same as his book. Book is needed to complete the SA grader assignments. 3 tests; no final. iClicker points. Class is very boring. Offers extra credit.
One of the best class I have ever taken. Nicest professor who was willing to go outside the classroom to help students.. Thank god! MU has such an amazing professor
Everyone complains how boring he is, but if you are taking SOC 1000, Brent is the guy you want! The SAGraders (homework assignments) are so easy and you can retake them until you get a perfect score, and if you just do perfect on all of those you only have to average a C on the tests and you will have an A. Easiest class ever, only take him!
Nice but very boring, only go to lectures to get clicker points because he puts all the slides on blackboard. Do well on SAGrader and you'll be fine
Good luck navigating his pedantic SAgrader assignments--you'll need it, seeing as they make up about 60% of your grade. The rest is made up by 3 exams and attending his lectures, where you'll listen to him monotonously read his powerpoints word-for-word. Oh, and I hope you like being force-fed political propaganda; he seems to think this is polisci
This class may be boring, but it is also easy to take! Just show up everyday, get full points on the SAGrader assignments (which make up the majority of overall grade), and don't bomb the exams below a C average! By the way, he gives extra credit assignments! Also approachable for help if you need it! Best of all, no final exams!
Dr. Brent did not work with me when my iclicker was not working properly. He was very condescending and wouldn't hear me out; even when one of his lectures focused on proper argumentation, which includes acknowledging the other point of view.
come to class for clicker points. Online assignment on SA Grader can be confusing especially the case studies. But if you do your best on those and get at least a C on the tests you'll pass with an A.
Just awful, class is a joke! Reef polling doesn't work and SA grader is unorganized. Your grade isn't a reflection of your understanding of sociology but of your understanding of technology.
Long boring lectures that will put you to sleep, but you must show up. He has clicker questions that reward attendance points for answering so you have to go to class. Online essays are super easy as long as you put the work into them. Tests are fairly difficult. Requires a lot of studying.
Attendance is mandatory for the clicker questions which he gives you about 15 seconds for. Basically on your own with the SAgraders. There are questions on the SAgraders about content he hasn't discussed and sometimes isn't even in the book THAT HE WROTE. Be prepared to do a lot of digging through the book and lectures for your homework.
Boring teacher. must know material for test. get the text book. you don't need to go to class, all power points are online. all you need is an A on the SA graders and at least Cs on the test.
The material in his class was really interesting and the commentaries on each chapter were straight to the point and relatable. The essays were pretty easy for a writing intensive class since you can revise them as many times as you want. Be warned, the midterm is excessively hard!!! Make sure you know exactly what you are talking about.
Super easy--failed two tests and still received an A in the class. Just get 100% on the SA graders and do the extra credit
The lectures could be extremely boring on one day, and very interesting on another day, it honestly varied. He's pretty entertaining sometimes, he's a very nice guy and will help you if you reach out to him. I went to class about 60% of the time and still got an A. I barely used the textbook, he puts everything online.
Material is easy and interesting, but the way Brent teaches it makes it hard to pay attention for very long. His lecture notes (which he posts online), are practically the same as what is in his textbook (that he wrote himself).
The lectures are long and boring, but all of the homework is online and you get unlimited attempts. Show up to class for clicker points, but he gives you more than enough extra credit. I did average on all the test & still got a 96% in the class. EASY A as long as you do the online work. I recommend taking this w/ Brent if you need a GPA booster!
find a group help each other with the SA graders get 100's on them & do the extra credit you will be fine. some friends even did clicker questions online in bed and never even went to class. if you skim the book & read the notes you will get a decent test (shoot for a c) also the website study . com is basically your textbook i ended with a 98.9
Easy to get an A because homework has unlimited attempts and offers up to 5% extra credit. His lectures are really long and boring and he is very monotone and boring as well. I would recommend taking it with a different professor, his tests are actually more challenging than expected for a 1000 level course.
Professor Brent is the absolute worst teacher I've ever had. He and his TAs completely ignore all emails, he has NO office hours, and does not prepare students at all for tests. If I were you I would pick a different teacher for Sociology 1000.
This class was online, so there was a lot of using SA Grader. He was very unclear about his expectations for our assignments, and was very rude about answering my questions. The midterm exam was impossible, had to write 11 essays in 2 hours without having the essay questions ahead of time. Once I got SA Grader figured out, it wasn't too bad.
His lectures are painfully boring and he uses clickers so you have to show up. His tests are surprisingly challenging for a 1000 level class. Overall, Brent seems like a jerk, is insensitive to a student who has disabilities so I would strongly recommend a different professor for soc1000. SA graders are also really unclear and daunting.
Listening to Brent lecture was my least favorite part of the week. Most days I just watched Netflix on my laptop and only went to class for the clicker points. Lots of essays but it's easy to get an A on them. He also offers extra credit. Average C's on the tests an A's on the essays and get the clicker points and you will get an A.
Very boring lectures but have clicker points, easy assignments that are on SAGrader, easy A if you go to class and study for your exams
Thought it would be an easy course for a humanities Gen Ed. but I really had to work for it. Uses online essay grader which usually has problems with grading. Wouldn't recommend.
Lots of pointless homework. Three tests which are not bad if you study the material. Clicker questions are like the tests. A lot of the tests have specific knit picky questions which is annoying. SA grader is used and are annoying, but actually made me read the book and learn the material. Not a fan of Ed, he is boring and rude. A lot of EC though.
lectures are really boring, but if you go to the lecture, you don't have to read the textbook. with a test average of like 70%, i still got an A- in the class bc he offers easy extra credit. homework is online and you get unlimited tries up until the due date. he uses clickers for attendance, but it doesn't matter if you choose the right answers
Don't miss his classes as he takes point off . Easy and helpful professor.
Very helpful professor if you reach out for help. Easy class and easy A. SAGrader helps you boost your grade.
Boring lectures but easy A if you go to class regularly. Do all the SAGrader assignments which help to make up for the points you will loose in the exams. Make sure you reach out for help. Very helpful professor.
Boring class. Easy A.
Very unhelpful teacher and not care about his students concerns. The SAgrader system is ridiculous and cannot accurately grade an essay that you spent hours writing in 5 seconds. It asks for info that is not in the prompt provided and grades definitions wrong even when they are the exact same out of the textbook. Dr Edwards does not seem to care.
The lectures are so boring, but you have to go and answer the clicker questions. Plus, the test questions are taken mostly from lecture. If you do well on the SAgrader hmwk and extra credit, your grade will be fine.
I took this class online. SAGrader is nice because you get unlimited attempts, but Brent provides no feedback when you challenge the scoring. He just tells you that it's wrong. I definitely recommend attempting to get a 100 on all of the homework, then you won't have to worry much about the exams. Also grading criteria isn't very clear.
He has pretty good and helpful lectures, but it is super easy to zone out, and do other things on your computer. The homework and iClicker reef are easy points. Just try to listen and take notes in class, so you dont have to waste time to learn it later. Go to class for clicker question. Hardest part of the class, it's super easy to get distracted
He means well but the class is very boring and it is very easy to zone out. I took SOC 1000 and although he is boring, it was an easy A. The class relies heavily on online assignments which allow unlimited submissions until you get 100%. The exams are challenging but he offers like 10% worth of extra credit at the end of the semester. Easy A/B
His lectures were very dry and inaccurate most of the time. Was very rude to students that asked questions and uses SA Grader very heavily. Easy A if you get good grades on the SA grader stuff, they just take a long time.
Online 1000 was the only course option that worked with my schedule to earn my Sociology minor -- I wish there had been any other option. The textbook is insanely expensive and poorly written by Brent -- I spend more time distracted by errors than absorbing information. SAGrader doesn't measure your understanding of material, just of technology.
If you are regular to your class, and do all the assignments, its easy A.
I did not like first few lectures but once I started doing all my assignments on time, I got very comfortable with the subject matter. I would strongly recommend this class to students who are looking for easy A.
Extremely boring class, but as long as you do all of the SAGrader assignments you can still pull off an A even with doing very average on the exams. If you go to class you can also get participation points which helps a little.
he is a G
SAGrader should be your main concern throughout this class. He posts his powerpoints online so you do not really have to go to lectures. He takes attendance for participation points, but he tells you on the first day that he provides extra credit to make up for a student choosing not to come to class.
You have to do well on the online assignments. If you do, then it's an easy A. Plus, you can keep submitting them until you get 100% so make sure you do that because the tests are pretty hard. Brent is kinda dull but he's really nice and cares a lot about his students. Also, he gives out a lot of curves and extra credit, which is really nice.
Not the best professor but if you do your SAGrades you will do fine. Go to class to get points, tests can be tricky.
Dr. Brent's class was one of my favorites. Even though I'm not a sociology major, I would take another sociology class because of how much I liked this class. He has a deep knowledge and his lectures are amazing! I would 100% recommend this class.
Decent guy. He makes sociology pretty darn bland, but the information is all good. Not a fan of the reliance on SAgrader -- the tech is just too unreliable. I almost always had to challenge my "wrong" answers. Also: clickers are a scam. Very straightforward lecture class other than that.
Prof. Brent was a great match for me as a freshman taking sociology for the first time. His lectures, while large, were engaging, and he had a good variety when it came to topics, and induced critical thinking in and outside the classroom. I will say, SA Grader can be difficult, but as long as you finish them on time, you will pass for sure.
Dr. Brent's SOC 1000 was an easy A. Online writing assignments can be done as many times as necessary to get the grade you want. Only 3 tests (no comprehensive final) and they're multiple choice. He gives extra credit assignments at the end of the semester. Lectures not mandatory, but he uses iClicker for attendance and questions in class.
You have to go to class for attendance purposes but the assignments were so easy on SA grader it tells you what you miss and lets you do it til there's nothing left to fix. I got a 98.9 in this class.
Rather boring lecturer, but very easy to pass. Pro tip: Create a GroupMe to discuss the assignments with people before turning them in, but DON'T COPY! As long as you make sure to have all the required elements for each assignment, you'll be good. But if you cheat and copy exactly, the system WILL catch you and punish you.
I first had Professor Brent as a professor my freshman year of college while taking his introduction to sociology course. I enjoyed this class a lot and even decided to minor in sociology. I am now a senior and just got done taking his social psychology course. I HATE writing, but you can rewrite the essays as many times as you need so I liked that
horrible class. was not given information about anything. I had to contsantly email with questions. There is not even a canvas page for this class. No idea what was gonna be on exams. Very difficult for a bull shit class.
Dr Brent's use of SAGrader should be illegal. This MAN asks you to define multiple concepts in every paper (paraphrased obviously), use a direct quote for an example and other bullshit. BUT WITH SAGRADER YOU LITERALLY HAVE TO HAVE THE EXACT SPECIFIC WORDS TO EARN POINTS.This MAN doesn't even GRADE THE PAPERS HIMSELF, you get the grade from SAGrader
