Funny guy and lectures are interesting and never boring; likes to shout.
funny guy, never a dull lecture, except when the TAs lecture..
funny and interesting...knows what he's talking about
very funny
Very funny. Reminds me of the war teacher in the cartoon Daria
Great lectures! Filled with anecdotes (some pretty funny) that brings history alive.

funny guy, sarcastic tone a lot. does like to shout now and then to make point across. he is not anti-white, it seems that way because of the truth that he brings across in class. he does not white-bash, even though he has all the opportunity too. Very gd
great teacher, has a sense of humor and makes the class fun to learn!
yes, he likes to shout. but hes very funny, and entertaining. hes not ****, as someone mentioned, but he tries to get you to think differently about things. way cool.
He is a very good professor. You have to take alot of notes during lecture, but he makes it interesting. I learned alot about asian culture through this class. You have alot of reading, but this class is great. I recommend taking this course.

The history of whites is anti-minority. We are force-fed the glorified history of whites. That is the truth and ETST is there to educate. Stop whining, you haven't learned anything in class huh?
An energetic professor. Funny. Teaches well. Lots of books to read (about 4). Hw is just to read.
you must do the readings or have a good TA who will explain everything (most won't). he's a good lecture, very sincere, and very approachable if you have a problem.
Great person, very professional
Very funny professor and he is very professional. He makes the class very interesting.

easy to understand, easy to get an A. lectures were not boring, but i dont like the talkshow-like opinion-gathering sessions he has.
he's really funny and easy~!
hes funny but gives way toooo much readings..

Knows the material very well. Approachable. Assigns A LOT of reading, but overall the class is very easy. I got an A.
Easy only if you have a good TA or a friend with a good TA because Eddie Chang won't help you out at all!

the class was quite easy, but only with the help of my wonderful TA. he is not helpful during office hours but gives great lectures. not that bad looking for an old guy.
He is a funny guy who teaches you things about our history that we would never learn outside of this course. It's hard to tell what he wants to focus on for the tests because he emphasizes everything, but he's a very good prof.

easiest class ever. like other have said, all you need is a good T.A and pay att. in disc. an "all over the place teacher who yells as he speaks." makes you buy 3 book with lot of reading, did'nt buy any or read any just pay atten to t.a.
he's very animated. he loves this subject so much. he can go hours talking about it. he knows his materials. explains it very well. he even wrote his own books required for his class. his books are somewhat interesting to read. take his class and learn something and get a good grade.
funny guy
Professor Chang is a very good teacher. He keeps the students' interest and he's very funny. I've laughed and cried in that class. If there were a continuance to this class, I'd take it in a heartbeat. This is the only class I found interesting and looked forward to.

he makes the subject very interesting.. but its not a class you can just breeze through
Held us hostage by posting TA's at exits to take down names of those who left early, then would take points off your grade. The texts were boring and useless, big waste of $.
VERY INTERESTING CLASS, THE PROFESSOR IS EXTREMELY COOL, HE KNOWS HIS MATERIAL REALLY WELL. JUST READ SOME OF THE READINGS, PAY ATTENTING N' TAKE NOTES DURING LECTURE, THEN YOU WILL GET A GOOD GRADE
He is a good professor, the tests are all essay questions, pay attention to lecture and discussion and read the books because having lots of facts will help you get a good grade!
UGH!!!ok for an UNDERGRAD class,it was pretty hard only because it was so time consuming; felt like he didn't realize that there are other classes and life(ex:there were about 200pgs of reading a week). on the other hand, he was quite interesting and taught the course like a story; very nice guy.
The course itself is very easy. The prof. teaching the course, however, he likes to repeat himself sometimes and at times he doesn't make sense b/c of his accent. Overall, it was an easy class. He just likes to assign a lot of reading, so read! They're important for the midterms/final.
His exams are not as hard as you think. His class is pretty interesting and easily understood.
Reallllly Easy...all you have to do is understand general concepts...the TAs grade al lthe exams and all you have to do is know how to BS properly and you've got a Gaurenteed A in the class...very interesting subject matter, and shows good videos to suppliment the readings and lectures.
was pretty easy but i got a bad grade cuz i didnt goto class nor did i study properly for the exams.
very interesting and informative, had much fun in his class
I had him for ETST 5 also and he got me interested in minoring for Asian American studies. Yes, many will say that taking his class is time consuming because of the amount of stuff you have to read, but it's interesting and informative. He's funny and very helpful. I recommend to take him for Asian American classes. He knows his stuff.
teaches very well. doesn't read off anything, just lectures off the top of his mind while following an outline. exams aren't hard, depending on how the TA grades.
he rambles a lot in lecture .. just make sure to get a lenient TA.
He's a good teacher and tried to make his lectures funny. The class itself was rather easy but you definitely will learn a lot.
Horrid professor. Lectures were excrutiatingly boring and sometimes he was hard to understand. Discussions were pointless and a waste of time.
His lectures were okay. The class itself was pretty easy.
Cool professor. Thought he seemed a bit conservative at first, probably because of his appearance, but had a good time learning in his class. He really tried hard to get some class participation, but things were the same by the 10th week. However, he ma
Very interesting class. Easy A class if you go to lectures.
Smart guy. He's te fist PhD in ethnic studies in all of the US! A groundbreaker! Smart as hell if you talk to him. Yeah, his class is chill, but you can learn TONS if you actually do what he asks and engage in the class. He's pretty famous in his field I found out.

GREAT prof. The ONLY way to get JUST a "C" is to NOT participate; regardless of your opinion, being an active part of the class get's Chang's attention and you wil do well even if you don't think that you will.
Hella Irresponsible!
very interesting, he is very informed about what he's lecturing. Has passion for what he teaches.
If you did good in AP US history in high school take this class right away: you can get an easy A without reading the books and just writing stuff you remembered about. The lectures were boring and this class actually creates racial tension instead of understanding!
Chang is awesome! His lectures are very helpful, his midterms and finals are from the readings though. Some may think he's difficult, but I think as long as you talk to him and show interest/ effort he will give you a good grade. Attendance is necessary and don't slack on readings.
One of the greatest professors I've ever had at UCR.His lectures stick with you forever and he teaches in a very laid back manner, while still getting his point across every time. There is a really long term paper but theres always enough information to meet the pg req. He's funny, nice, and a great professor!
Always singled out me and my other white classmates during lecture. He also compared Japanese Internment to the Holocaust...not even close.
Good professor who knows his stuff. Also throws in a joke every now and then, though lectures are still boring. As long as you make good effort in the class, you're good to go. Make sure you do all the readings that he specifies since exams are (essay/short answer) based on them.
super boring lectures. books pretty much required. just go to the discussion sections. thats where you get your participation points and grade. just show up to lecture for the tests. tests are pretty easy. all essay just read the books and youre fine. hes hard to understand but overall a nice guy. i would recommend the class for an easy a
one of the best professors ever! he is lenient and dedicated to his work. i learned so much even tho i wasn't that interested. overall i enjoyed him a lot!!
Easy Class. Really Good Professor. Just attend discussion and review sessions and you're pretty much guaranteed an A.
really easy class. just read the books he assigns and you should get your A
SUPPPPEERRRR EEAAASSSSYYYY. I NEVER PURCHSASED ANY OF THE 3 ASSIGNED BOOKS .....just read online journals and articles written on the books asssigned.....cake walk....got an A.
Professor Chang was pretty boring, tried to make the class interesting but in all honesty to make the class so is up to you. EXTREMELY VAGUE on the syllabus, you have to go up to him to ask questions after class. Oh yeah, and NO OFFICE HOURS HELD. Good luck taking this ridiculous class.
Super easy. Just do assigned readings and take lecture notes. Tests are essays or short essays. There is a lenient group project in discussion. I'm 5th generation Chinese and this was a real eye opener on my family history. The book Unsung Hero was a good read and reminded me of playing the Mass Effect series. Haha.
Easy A, lots of reading, attendance is required, free response exams
Recieved at A. The professor isn't great at teaching. Never read the books, only read online reviews about the reading material. Free response exams.
Skimmed assigned text books; did great on exams. Group project w/ 3 essays. Exam short essays and one long essay. Final 2 long essays, and short essays. Sometimes topics are interesting. Very vague syllabus, kind of wings the class. A lot of movies in the 2nd half of quarter. I missed 4 classes and still got an A.
Not the best avoid if you can
Professor Chang's class this year was based on a 30% midterm a 50% final and a 20% discussion. This is all during the current pandemic and civil unrest going on right now. Lectures aren't the best. Very disorganized tests where prompts had 6 questions attached to them. I'd hope the class is better in person.
Professor Chang's lectures were so disorganized. He's probably better in person, but online he isn't great. I hate the group project. You definitely have to read, but you can finesse the readings for the midterm and final.
Professor removed all his lecture videos during finals week, no slides were uploaded. I don't know why he removed though... he made it impossible for us to study for the materal.
Man, he was amazing as a lecturer and he pushed our buttons in our Intro to Ethnic Studies, the challenged, questioned our values, exposed our prejudice, our racism in a blunt but respectful and somewhat civil way. He was direct. I enjoyed his lecture and class. It was a large class so tutors took care of us and graded our papers.
This class was extremely boring, and I found myself watching the clock until class was over. He's extremely unorganized, has barely any information on the slides (which aren't available), and constantly has to go check his notes during lecture for like 2 minutes. Only Midterm and Final, which are online. No homework, but there's a group project.
So disorganized and unprofessional. Changes the format of the test so many times about a week or so prior to the test date. Does not have the exam structure ready from the get go. Didn't go to his own midterm. Never answers student email or addressed our concerns. 1000+ pages of reading and expects lots of memorization for an intro class. AVOID!!!
This professor was honestly incredibly unorganized. I didn't enjoy going to this class, it felt like I would only be going to zone out and waste time, or doze off. Grade is based on two exams and the discussion section. Doesn't post lectures online, to "promote better attendance". TAs were also unorganized. It was all insanely stressful.
I actually really liked this professor and my TA was amazing. I don't think this class deserves the bad reviews its receiving. Lecture is mandatory as it ends up on the midterm. No HW or essays just reading the books (online) and its split by weeks on the syllabus. The midterm was very easy and was open note as well as open book. I would take again
So unorganized. Assigns us 1000+ pages of reading as if we're in an upper div and tests us on specific chapter and minor details. Doesn't have the format of the exam ready until a week or so before. He literally skipped his own midterm exam where many had technical difficulties. Posts no notes and moves too fast for us to take notes. AVOID!!!!
Take someone else if possible. The affect he has on one's mental health is just crazy. He makes us get 3 textbooks, one of which is his own that he translated which is 300+ pages along with other textbook readings that accumulate. He moves way too fast during lecture giving no one time to copy notes. He is very unorganized and unprofessional.
DO NOT TAKE CHANG take literally any other etst course just not with chang. Boring long lectures where he rambles about things irrelevant to course material. Tests are based on his bad lectures as well as the million pages of reading you do for hw. Changed the midterm and final last minute (100 question final btw). just dont take this class.
Literally anyone but this prof. He doesn't are about his students and posts nothing. No announcements about changes to exams leaving us confused. Never addressed our concerns and never even showed up to his tests. Makes us read 1000+ pages like we are not upper div students. IT'S AN INTRO CLASS. Formats syllabus so he gets away with it.
I really liked this class and professor. He was very sweet and I enjoyed lecture and discussion. I got away with not having to read the book but this class is graded by midterm, final, and discussion. There was no homework. Midterm was open note and final was 1 cheat sheet multiple choice 100 questions. Don't be worried about taking this class :)
Where do I even start. The most UNORGANIZED class i think ive ever been. He doesnt even post the slides onto the canvas so if you skip, good luck. All he did was just yap in lectures, and had his TA's do the rest of the work. He didnt even come for the midterm and final. Overall this class really wasnt clear so please im warning DONT TAKE HIM PLEASE
Although the class was easy the professor made a lot of things worse with the final with last minute changes like it was suppose to not be a cummalative final but within a week he changed it and the TA's had to scramble to help us. He was also a no show for both exams. Lastly theres a lot of reading as he assign an entire book and 2 text books.
Very unorganized and changes the final last minute on us. Never showed up for exams and felt like he didn't care about his students.
Class was supposed to be easy; the professor made many things hard for the final with last-minute changes. It was supposed to be a non-cumulative final, but in week 8 he changed it and the TAs had to run and scramble to help. He also did not show up for all two exams (midterm and final). There's a lot of reading because he assigns 3 entire books.
The amount of strain he put on my mental health is crazy. He lacks organization and keeps changing formats of everything. He creates his syllabus in a way that allows him to do this. Gave us 3 entire books accumulating over 1000+ pages of reading for an intro class. Please save yourself and your mental health by taking another professor.
Simply reads off notes on his tablet and yet he posts no slides, which he breezes through. Tests are super specific to readings in which he assigns 3 entire textbooks that are very long with one 300 page book being assigned the 8th week of class expecting us to finish it. Definitely take another professor.
Poor experience. Very boring lectures. Changed the format of the Final less than a week before. The final was changed from 50 to 100 questions and went from content after the midterm to cumulative. There were multiple questions on the final which had factually incorrect answers but the TAs or Professor refused to give points back.
He treats us like the plague given how he never responds to our emails or concerns. Never sends important announcements regarding last minute changes to exam structures, which he doesn't have ready until 2 weeks before the actual test. Assigns way too much reading like as if we're in upper divs. Do not take this class with him save yourself.
This class wasn't as bad as others say. I actually enjoyed it. mostly thanks to my TA, Omar, who was incredibly helpful and easily the best TA I've ever had at UCR, take his section if you get the chance. Class has just had 2 multiple choice exams. Chang is very knowledgeable; students just need to give him a chance and actually attend lecture.
I had professor Chang Spring25, class grade depended 30% on discussion, 30% the midterm, and 40% on the final (it was 100qs, with 1 page of notes). He expects you to read 3 books during the whole quarter but depending on your TA, they can either help you a lot or not at all when it comes to preparing for midterms/finals (I had Carol).
His class was a mess, but it wasn't the hardest. My TA was chill, but the study guides he provided were vague. (Victor)
It's so disorganized how do you accidentally mess up the grades of many students and submit them without checking. There's so much readings to do for an intro class and he never responds to emails. 2 or 3 TAs carried the class and made our life so much easier. No slides posted to encourage attendance even then he moves too fast on slides. Not good.
Took this class in 2014. Respectfully disagreed with the professor during a lecture, but he didn't seem to like being challenged. Later, he accused me of cheating on a midterm over a formatting mistake. TA stepped in later, and I got a B. Threat felt connected to the class. Wouldn't recommend to voice different views in his class.
I don't like the professor. His slides are very unorganized, he never posted lectures slides in canvas. He is not the kind of person who is approachable. He doesn't very care about students. However, my TA Carol is nice and passionate for students.
