He uses a lot of info from the book that seem like minor details on exams. Otherwise, lecture is usually somewhat entertaining. He's not as approachable as some, but he is still a very knowledgeable prof
Lecture was usually amusing, even at 8am students were rarely falling asleep. Really stresses participation in lecture, although not super approachable outside of class.
He made 8am class fun. He brings in a lot of outside perspectives like philosophy and stresses critical thinking as opposed to rote memorization.
very knowledgable and experienced. has multiple exams so less material to cover each time. 8am was tough to make, but it was always worth going.
Great teacher! I didn't like the fact that class started at 8am, but once I got over that I enjoyed the class. Chang is very knowledgable and makes the subject fun and interesting!

A lot of work for this class. The discussion and lecture are basically entirely separate classes. It's a decent class though, and he does a pretty good job.
He was very unhelpful, and often called people out for asking questions in class.
discussion and lecture were basically 2 completely separate classes with lots of work. chang seemed like he was going to be a straightforward, helpful professor but when it came to the exams, he was very ambiguous with material on the exam and the questions themselves.
His lectures are boring and they were at 8am...there's nothing you can learn out of one blood-shot eye at 8am, especially from this guy. The workload is ridiculous...don't take this class
Lecture and exams = EASY, the discussion has separate books and is basically another class with a scientific paper due each week...graded extremely difficultly...definitely unfair should be an 8 credit class. Lectures were good, extremely predicatable and necessary for doing well on exams!!!
He makes it clear what you need to study, and if you actually try you will do ok. Then again, when I took it there was no discussion and I liked that. Ed's a great teacher though. He knows what he's talking about and he presents multiple perspectives. Good class.
Lecture and discussion are like 2 seperate classes. Entirely too much work for 4 credits. Its not difficult material, there's just a lot to do. I personally, thought his lectures and readings were boring, but that's just me.
Prof. Chang taught my Psychopathology course years ago. He's a mentor to me and he is a wonderful professor. He clearly knows the material, adds many interesting information to it, and is an all-around amazing professor. Anything less said about him is simply from ungrateful spoilt brats.
His classes are sooooo boring..I regret soo much for taking his classes...when people tell me how interesting psychopathology is, I just wanna cry for not taking the same course taught by another professor. He is okay, but..don't recomment that you take his course. James Hansell is much better prof
I thought this class was great, the only thing I didn't like was the 8am timeslot.
He's a bit arrogant. Behavioral psych is a joke. He tries to incorporate philosophy into everything he says. He thinks he is so smart, but guess what? He's not. Seriously not a hard class, but really boring. Pretty much common sense. Sometimes quizzes are tricky, but you have xtra credit.
It's been awhile, but I remember liking Prof Chang.
Chang tries really hard to be available to his students needs. His added philosophical ideas are a very important part of his lectures because they reveal the flaws in arbitrary, institutional diagnosis. Also the philosophical aspects of his class show that we're not dealing with statistics but with the enigmatic concept of the human mind.
i thought it was a good class, one of my favorites at um

He was pretty good.
Interesting class, but because discussion and lecture were basically 2 separate classes, it was a lot of work. Some of the things he says are off the wall and make him seem very arrogant, but he's always willing to meet with students to help them with material or just psychology related questions in general
Not a bad professor, but his lectures are very formulaic. Not always a bad thing, but because they're predictable (content aside), it can be easy to nod off during lecture (which he does not take kindly to). I appreciate his insistence on conceptual critique of the field, as well. However, he was very unapproachable, IMO.
His lectures are pretty dry, and he doesn't put any resources online- so if you can't write fast enough to keep up, you're screwed. Also, section is basically like a separate class (even has a different text and different exams), so the class is twice as much work as expected. Chang is clear and understandable, but quite arrogant.
Your hand will kill by the end of lecture. He gives absurd amount of notes that are not posted online. Not hard but painfully long and quizzes are given during each lecture. Lecture and discussion are separate classes, that means double the work for one class, so not worth it.
Interesting topics and materials presented, but tons of notes and a lot of reading. Discussion section is completely separate from lecture and is as good as taking an extra class.
Terrible class. His lecture's aren't bad, but the discussion section is absolutely terrible. It's like a completely different class. Way too much of a work load for a four credit class.
Quiet and intelligent. He knew his material well enough. Not the most humorous person alive, but still made class interesting.
i think he is a great professor, the two hour lecture goes by quickly, and other than being there-taking notes there is barely any work load. This lecture did not have a discussion componet making it only sweeter!
Awesome teacher. 2 hour lectures go by quickly, with hardly any work. No discussion sections, which is a plus.
Very good instructor. Knows the material and relates everything to real life. Organized and everything is easy to follow. Gives plenty of opportunities to earn extra credit from class participation and occassional surveys. No discussion sections are a plus! Id definitely take another course by Chang if it were available
BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD AT UM. My class was just lecture, no discussion, which was great. He made the 150-person lecture feel like a group. He is extremely knowledgable, presents different perspectives fairly, and is kind enough to offer not-so-subtle hints about exam/quiz material. Exams/quizzes were always very fair, not difficult if you study.
Great class because there is no discussion. Prof talks fast but provides the notes. You have to go to class but its not so bad and also must read the book for the test. Tests are fair...mostly straight forward, study and you'll be fine. TAKE IT, better than other teachers from what i've heard. Know the notes cold.
I guess our class was the first to have an integrated discussion and lecture. Chang is a great Professor who forced us to think critically. He has great anecdotal material to supplicate the lectures. Excellent class and very interesting to hear a Clinical Psychologist with a Humanistic existential grounding.
i took this for fall06. no discussion sections! his lectures are 2hrs, can be long. but he usually gives breaks in between, so that helps. throws out questions to the students, emphasizes critical thinking. exams are straightforward (he gives out hints during class). MUST read TB. MUST come to class. plenty of opp for extra credit.
amazing class. the material is very interesting, and chang keeps it interesting. great lecturer. need to attend all his class. plenty of extra credit opportunities!
Nice and funny guy. He's from new york and has a very cut to the chase attitude.
Lecture is interesting, and Professor Chang encourages his students to think critically. No boring, useless discussion sections!!! 5 straightforward multiple choice exams based on the text and lecture. Must attend lecture...you will want to anyway! Lots of extra credit opportunity. Prfessor Chang is the best...take this class from him!!!
lectures are pretty much mandatory (lots of notes that must be taken by hand/not put up on CTOOLS and also 11 pop quizzes). the constant writing and funny tangents will keep you awake though. tests are straightforward and pretty fair.
he's great! there's 5 multiple choice exams, pretty easy and straightforward and there's no papers. he's a fun guy and keeps you awake. there's a good amount of extra credit opportunity. you should most definitely take this class!
LOVED this class. The quizzes were so easy and the 5 exams were every 2 weeks or so (less material covered = easier to memorize all the information). He was so dynamic and engages everyone in lecture. Quite possibly one of the best Psych professors I have had. I recommend this class, if not for the information covered, but to have Chang!
Good professor. Tests are fair. No discussion section.
Quite possibly the BEST professor at UM! Five exams, 11 quizzes, NO papers,NO discussion section. :)Professor Chang is engaging, knowledgeable, fair, genuine...a man of integrity and principle! You will him, and you will LOVE this class!
5 straight forward MC exams. 11 quizzes, but he tells you what will be on them and gives you a 5min break to study. up to 15pts of extra credit!! very engaging lecture. only downside was that you have to copy the notes from overhead slides for the full 2hrs.. which gets really tiring (no laptops allowed!) overall, i really enjoyed this course :)
you MUST read the textbook in order to well on the exams... it's a lot of reading, but definitely doable. easy exams. easy quizzes. great professor!
Am I the only one who did not find Chang amazing? I got writers cramp in lecture because he talked so much and notes are not online. Tests were straightforward as long as you know everything from both the lectures and book. Workload was not hard and it was nice to have no discussion.
I loved this class!! Class is almost always entertaining. He tells random jokes all the time. He encourages lecture participation and makes school much more enjoyable. Pros: Quizzes are easy; Tests are easy; No discussion section; plenty extra credit. Cons: You have to copy lecture slides; no computers. I strongly recommend this class. =]
One of the best professors I have had at Michigan! Professor Chang is an excellent teacher, he gives weekly quizzes instead of midterms and finals so you can manage the workload. He is also really funny and I actually enjoyed going to lecture.
This is the best professor I had at UM!! Not only is he extremely funny, brillant and cool, but his class is actually fun and interesting. If you haven't taken a class with professor Chang, I HIGHLY suggest that you do!!
My favorite class at U of M. Not only is the topic AMAZING but Chang is interesting and funny.
Great professor, great sense of humor. Class was actually entertaining. I learned alot (even though I took the class about 7 years ago) and still remember mostly everything from this course. Highly recommended.
Best professor I have ever had. Straight forward, easy if you attend lecture and read. Lots of extra credit too. Take this class.
5 MC non cumulative exams, 11 "pop" quizzes that he basically tells you the answers to, extra credit if you participate. you HAVE to read the book and go to lecture (or get notes from someone) cause he doesnt post it and you cant use computers. relatively easy A, just not as interesting as i thought it would be. okay, not as great as everyone says
Great lecturer and great sense of humor. attendance to all lectures is MANDATORY. you get easy points for going and taking the "pop" quizzes. tests are 5 50 question MC exams that are fairly straight forward if you attend lecture and READ THE TEXTBOOK. material is interesting though. definitely take his class!
I did NOT like professor chang. He is very arrogant (although he claims on the first day that he is not). He HATES the greek system and makes lots of comments that he thinks are jokes but are not funny and sometimes offensive. I would recommend the other 270 teacher.
Great class. Professor Chang was interesting & also pretty funny. You have to read the book, you have to go to lecture in order to get notes, but there are no pointless discussion sections and the exams are noncumulative. There is also a ton of extra credit, and he basically gives you the answers. One of the best intro level psych classes.
Great professor, interesting material, very easy to talk to. Take this class!!
Taking his abnormal psych class.. the book is interesting, but he's really not. He talks about himself the whole time and doesn't do enough with the class material to make it interesting enough. You'd think this class would be awesome, but it's TONS of reading and blah lectures. Nice scull cap Chang.
MY FAV CLASS SO FAR!! Lectures are so much fun and very interesting - Professor Chang is so funny and engaging. You have to go to class because notes are not posted. 5 exams, noncumulative (easier because less to memorize for each one). Textbook should be read because Q's on exam, however I didnt read it bc i was rly busy and got 86 on all my exams
I like his approach of combining different perspectives into interpretation of certain psychological disorder. He's kinda funny too
By far the best teacher I've had at this school so far. Makes you think! He's really knowledgeable and makes his lectures SUPER interesting! I loved this class!!
E-Money was awesome. Lectures kind of sucked because you had to go to get notes as they weren't posted AND they were at 9 am, but other than that definitely worth taking the class. He's funny and extremely knowledgable about what he's talking about
Chang's lectures are worth going to; he doesn't post the notes online, so you have to go in that sense, but he's actually pretty funny and it's entertaining to watch him run around like he has ADD. Read the book - there are quite a few questions on each exam of book material. Really good class, really interesting, and really good professor.
I actually didn't like the professor THAT much. He wasn't bad, just not my teaching style I guess. And kinda sucked because you had to read the whole textbook since he picked random and sometimes oddly specific questions from it. And go to all of his lectures to take down notes
No papers. Only 5 exams and 10 quizzes. I LOVE this class. Read the textbook carefully.
I thought he was really arrogant and no help when I saw him in office hours. Another annoying thing is I went to his office hours at least 3 times and he just didn't show up. When I asked him about it, he was just like "oh ya, I had other things to do." I really wanted to take this class, but didn't end up liking it. He picks random ? from the book
He's really not as great as expected. His lectures rock and he's interesting and funny. However, for his class, it was really difficult to do well in. You have to put in the time to come close to an A-.
Go to class. Take the notes he gives you. Read the heck out of the book. Follow these simple rules and you will do well in this class. No homework. Just mystery quizzes and 5 exams. Not easy, but very manageable. The professor is not the best, but he does the job.
Prof. Chang is a great professor. He genuinely wants to help you do well in his class. He goes off on unrelated rants sometimes, but you can just tune him out. It's important to go to class to get the notes and read the book because every slightest thing that he talks about or is in the book could be on the test, even if you think it's unimportant
Great professor! Best psychology class taken in the four years of college
Dr. Chang is legit. A little arrogant, yes, but he has a right to be. Go to all lectures and take the notes - he takes the majority of the exam questions from them. The 5 exams were a little hard because he asks random, random questions from the textbook. Good class all together.
Chang is easily the best professor I've had at UMich so far. He's funny, knows what he's talking about, and keeps you interested during lecture. The pop-quizzes and exams (5, non-cumulative) are straightforward and there's a ton of extra credit, so if you go to class and read the book, you're basically guaranteed an A.
You MUST read the text book (whole chapter) to do well in the class since he takes random questions from the book. Exams are probably 80% class material and 20% text book. He offers a few extra points to help you with the grade. He is kind of funny if you like his style.
You have to read the textbook for this class! Exams aren't too difficult and with the extra credit it's not a difficult class. If you want an easy class, take 270 with Chang, but if you want to learn more and are really passionate about the subject I would recommend taking it with someone else.
Ed Chang is a fun professor. I was extremely interesting in psychopathology to begin with, but he had wit and s fun sense of humor, which made coming to class enjoyable. He also runs the class with a sense of realism and always gives the call for his students to question and challenge traditionally held views, saying how important it is to think.
Chang's class is pretty laidback. He tells funny anecdotes, informs you about the material for the next quiz, and seems to want you to challenge what you're learning. Oh, and he has nice biceps. That's cool, too.
Chang was an awesome professor. He doesn't allow electronics in the class (weird, I know), but it actually proved to be helpful. I didn't study much for the exams because being in class and listening to him made me absorb most of the info. Oh, and he tells you what section of the lecture the quiz will be on, so it's easy to get good quiz grades.
Excellent professor. Very passionate about clinical psychology and you can tell by the way he lectures. The class is probably the easiest class I have taken here at the University of Michigan (many psych classes are pretty easy. I could study for 2 hours the night before and still get an A on the exams.
Dr. Chang didn't allow any electronics in his class and lectured with an overhead projector. Yet, somehow he made the class very interesting and engaging. He turned a 250+ person lecture into an open discussion type of class and is very interested in what students have to say. Exams came from lecture and the book. He is a true NY'er
Chang is a good lecturer. He uses examples from his personal life, perhaps to a bit of an excess since none of the information is relevant to exam material and he tends to get a big braggy. If you read the book and go to lecture, you're pretty much guaranteed an A.
really interesting class, and he's a nice guy. comes off as a narcissist at first, but he grows on you. 5 exams, and you have to read the book to do well. sometimes questions are too specific but it's not too bad
Despite the class being at 9 AM, it was surprisingly engaging. His personality grows on you and you can tell that he's passionate about what he's teaching. Lectures sometimes get a bit off topic, and you definitely have to read the textbook to do well on the tests. Otherwise, there's no essays or projects, which is nice. It's a course worth taking.
Like other people said, Professor Chang has some interesting class policies. But if you go to class, take notes, read the book and do the extra credit, there is no way to get less than an A.
Dr. Chang was awesome! He made this big 250+ class an open discussion course. Five exams, no papers or projects, and easy extra credit offered! 11 five question pop quizzes and tells you what section to study! Must read the textbook to do well on exams, but they're fair. Doesn't use CTools (no notes posted) and no electronics in class. Great class!
tests are not cumulative, pretty easy, and no final exam. He is a good, easy to understand teacher too with some interesting stories he ties into class material. Overall a great professor.
Best professor of the semester. Lectures are clear and interesting. Exams are short and easy. But most importantly, the professor is erudite and inspirational.
Professor Chang is a great lecturer. He acts tough, but he's a nice guy. Gave out a fair amount of extra credit. Must attend class and read the book to get an A. Gives a half a point for speaking in class, and does want to hear from his students. Take advantage of it. I missed an A- by a single point because I didn't speak two more times.
Not personable at all. Not a great professor. I would NOT recommend him to anyone. I was interested in clinical psychology UNTIL i took this class with Prof. Chang
Professor Chang is the best psychology professor I've had here at UMich so far. He gives 11 pop quizzes, lowest score dropped, but tells you the week before which section to study. Along with textbook material, he includes personal anecdotes from his clinical days during lecture, and is very open of everyone's opinions. Doesn't feel like 2 hours!
Very into what he teaches and very knowledgeable. He does not always make things as clear as they could be and sometimes actually makes things more complicated than they really are. The content is not difficult, but you need to get used to what he expects. Tests are all multiple choice; no technology allowed whatsoever.
Dr. Chang is entertaining, engaging, and extremely knowledgeable about the material. Shows a great deal of respect for his students and demands the same in return. Since the course grade is based on five multiple-choice exams and ten in-class quizzes, attending lecture is extremely important. He's an amazing professor and an inspirational guy.
Dr. Chang had a lot of interesting personal examples. Lectures were basically copying notes from an overhead projector, which could get a bit tedious. Exams were straightforward, but had a lot of info that wasn't covered in lecture that you had to read in the textbook. Quizzes weren't bad, and there were opportunities for extra credit.
Prof Chang was my favorite professor so far at the university, he tells you exactly what you need to know for tests, and keeps things real in the classroom. He is very easy to listen to and amazing teacher. Super impressive how he facilitates such good discussions in a lecture hall. 11/10 people find him to be amazing.
Lectures are long & require attendance. No notes or slides are posted online. His outlines and lecturing is clear-cut. Just study and read the textbook and you will get an A. He also offers extra credit occasionally, but I wouldn't expect it. Also, in-class pop quizzes are during lecture but he often tells you what they'll be on / when.
Dr. Chang is seriously phenomenal. His lectures are long, but if you're truly interested in the topic it goes by quickly. The notes are clear cut, and he tells you what to study for the exam. Reading is necessary, but again it's really interesting. His exams are very straight forward! He truly cares about the students.
Dr. Chang was a great professor, he cares about his students and made class interesting plus is really funny. Just had to read and study lecture notes/the text to get an A/A-
Dr. Chang was really passionate about teaching and constantly worked in stories from his own life making it more interesting. It's easy to keep up with notes during class, but make sure you're there b/c he doesn't post them. Dont use your phone during lecture, he'll call you out. You definitely need to read for the exams.
Though Dr. Chang has funny anecdotes that make him charming, he's nearly impossible to meet with and he clearly cares more about his research than the design of this class - we never had a course site and we took notes from an overhead projector. Such old-school methods for a young guy, and detrimental to the student experience.
One of the coolest guys ever! He ALWAYS has something to say when we're discussing the readings but it's so helpful when he contributes. Strict about showing up to class, but honestly it's worth going to class for. So energetic and awesome!
Very strict about specific things (phones, participation, etc.), but overall pretty cool professor and easy class if you just pay attention. A lot of people complain about his old-school tactics, but not allowing electronics in class really did help me do better, so I thank him for that.
Dr. Chang is a good lecturer who told interesting stories about his work experience. There is a big emphasis on the textbook. I sometimes felt like we were not tested on the main concepts, but rather, on random details from both the textbook and lecture. Going to class and reading the textbook are both very important for success in the class.
Ed Chang has high expectations of his students. Attendance is completely mandatory, seeing as though there are quizzes nearly every class with no chance to make them up. Overall though, he is an excellent professor. He gives plenty of real work examples, cares that his students understand material, and is passionate about what he teaches.
I took several of Dr. Chang's classes many years ago at NKU. He is brilliant and inspirational. I wish he still taught there. I couldn't wait to attend every one of his classes. I left each time feeling inspired, energized, and wanting to learn more. His lectures were interesting and he had a great sense of humor. Miss you Dr. Chang!
I loved this class and Dr. Chang! The lectures are straight forward with basic note taking, and he leaves room for discussion. The exams are easy if you read the assigned chapters. There's an interactive project at the end where you integrate class material in a mock treatment with a client and then present the findings in class. So cool!
Ed is an amazing lecturer with tons of clinical and teaching experience. His lectures are old school, but they really help you to pay attention and better understand the material. There are a lot of pop quizzes but they're generally pretty easy as long as you come to class and do the readings By far my favorite class and prof at Michigan.
Dr. Chang is a great professor who is very knowledgeable on the topic. Going to class is mandatory as 90% of the material comes from lecture and he does not post his notes. He does give pop quizzes, but they are easy if you have been in class. Very passionate about his work and will help you do well if you put in the effort.
Pretty good lecturer, tests don't have any surprises if you do the reading. He will NOT offer make up tests even if you ask in advance, so if you think you'll miss a test, don't sign up. Will get very upset if people skip class, so he has pop quizzes which make attendance mandatory. He also threatens to fail students for using their phones.
Connects all the material we learn in class to real life experiences, work and traditions around the world. He makes the material very easy to recall, and his lectures are always fun to attend.
great class, but kind of an odd professor. no canvas page or use of technology whatsoever. the class is easy if you stay on top of the readings and go to lecture for the quizzes (he tells you exactly what will be covered). side note, he emphasized that it was important to use the current textbook edition but I didn't (free pdf) and did well
He's a professor who do not use Canvas or any tech things which makes attendance mandatory. Another thing I don't like is he tests on random things from textbook and you won't know what will be tested on from textbook. Textbook questions made up about 20% percent of exam.
Dr. Chang was very knowledgable on this subject and made the material interesting by connecting it to different cultures and ways of life. He doesn't use Canvas or post notes online and pop quizzes make attendance mandatory, but his lectures are interesting so they were always worth going to.
I waited awhile before reviewing because I had some mixed feelings on this Professor. In the end, I am coming down on his side. He made me think about things that were challenging, seems to genuinely care about his students, has lively discussions and isn't a robot in a tie. You may not always agree with this Professor's view but he's worth taking.
Dr. Chang comes off as hard and unforgiving, but just be respectful and he will too. If you're late by 30 mins, he'll chew you out in front of 300 people, so grow up 2 years and get to class on time. Not all profs care and its annoying when 10 people stumble over you 30 mins into a lecture that's not recorded. So it's nice when a prof sets rules.
amazing teacher, he presented a complex understanding of material that challenged many of the world's pre-conceived ideas. Best teacher I've had by far. Pop quizzes make attendance mandatory, however you can pass the class with an A if you miss every single quiz so there's that. Just gotta read and pay attention and the rest will fall in place.
Although he does talk about himself incredibly too much, sometimes the stories are humorous. He talks about how he is incredibly humble, yet there were very few classes where he did not go on long tangents about his PhD and his published research. I get being proud, but it was very distracting. The course was difficult, but straightforward.
Great prof - lots of jokes in class, which keeps a large lecture interesting. Easily accessible outside of class- very personable guy. 5 exams, non-cumulative. Memorization heavy class. There are pop-quizzes, but he always tell you what a quiz would be over if there will be one. Lots of textbook reading- makes up 35% of exam - have to do readings!
Very organized notes - super easy to follow during lectures. Several extra credit opportunities. Cracks lots of jokes.
Very reading heavy class, if you skip reading a single chapter you will do extremely poorly on the exams. The notes are easy to follow but not posted anywhere so attendance is important, there are also pop quizzes but he will tell you what they will be over. Makes a lot of jokes and goes off on tangents but keeps class interesting.
Dr. Chang is a very sarcastic, funny professor that tries to keep his students engaged in an 8am class. His class was fun, but difficult to wake up for. The lectures are heavy with notes, but are easy to follow and organized. If you miss lecture, make sure to get the notes from somebody. Also, make sure you read the chapters he assigns! have agood1
Grading Scale is ridiculous. Have to get a 94.1 to get an A in this class... Exams are based on arbitrary information from the textbook. If you don't read EVERY word in the book then you won't do well on the tests.
Dr. Chang is an amazing professor and is dedicated to his profession. The only pitfall of the course -IMHO-is that material for exams is not explicitly stated. So no study guides (although he will hint at certain material that will be present on exams), and anything in lectures or in the readings is free game.
As a person, Chang seems super cool, nice, and funny... As a professor, he's rough. Lectures weren't boring, but exams were incredibly terrible. You have to know so so much and in so much detail, every single lecture and every single sentence of the textbook. I have never gotten below an A in a psych class before his.
He is very strict on his electronic use in class (aka: no computers, phones, tablets) nor does he have a canvas page, so success in this class is heavily dependent on taking good notes. That being said, this was one of my fav classes. The material was fun and interesting, and Dr. Chang is sarcastic, entertaining and engaging.
The class was not as interesting as I thought it would be, which was disappointing. He wasn't very helpful over email personally. My only real issue with the class is that there is no study guide so you're really going over everything in the book and memorizing a lot of material for the exam.
Dr Chang was an amazing psych professor and he made the class seem interesting. You definitely have to do a lot of reading in order to do well on the exams, but every lecture is based off of the textbook. Dr Chang was very good at adjusting to the online format of the class, which made the transition easier for me. I think that he was a great prof!
Dr. Chang is such a funny professor and he genuinely cares about his students. This course is test heavy, but the tests are fairly easy and entirely based on the textbook. Read the chapters a few times and youre good. Content of the course and lectures are very interesting, and I personally really enjoyed this course.
He gives no study material for exams, and you are expected to memorize small details in the textbook. If you can, avoid taking this prof.
Overall a very interesting man and lecturer however not worth if you're willing to sacrifice your grade. His exams are from very specific portions of the textbook which you must read in its entirety. This is not one of those "take for an easy a" psych courses. I read the entire textbooks and was lucky to receive a b+ by the end.
4 exams- 50 MCQs, 25 minutes, 30 seconds per question! Each question locked so you can't go back. No study guides, practice tests, nothing based off lecture. He never turned his own camera on, made no accommodations for the circumstances. Lecture AND exams on election day! Seems nice but hard not to judge his character based off course policies.
Chang makes lots of jokes goes beyond the book material. He introduces the complexities of abnormal behavior. He's also generous with his time outside of class. Recommended prof. His class isn't easy. Success requires reading the textbook and work (crazy, ik). Some unfair reviews are written by lazy and entitled students who skip and don't read.
He believes that he is a liberal arts teacher, but does not teach in a progressive and meaningful way. He hosts lectures that give information pertaining to his childhood and life experiences, but dont help in the understanding or learning of content. His tests are extremely difficult and have nothing to do with what he teaches. He wasted my time.
The tests were all based on the book and had nothing to do with the lecture. 50 questions in 25 min and all of them were very specific. Each test covered over 150 textbook pages and focused on minor details. Not worth it.
By far my favorite professor at a University. Presented ideas with complexity that broadened one's spectrum as compared to other classes and made you genuinely want to learn in life, and wants to push his students to do better. Honestly if you study and read you'll do more than fine all the test material comes from lectures and what's in the book
There is a lot of studying required for this class, and reading the textbook is necessary for the small details he tests on. However, the class is very engaging and I learned a lot. There is extra credit given for participation in lectures and a strict no technology rule.
I was very excited going into this course but unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. The exams are solely based on the textbook and Dr. Chang makes that very clear so there really was no reason to attend lecture, he also does not post slides. Pay attention to details when reading! Dr. Chang also spent time in lecture talking about himself.
Do not take this as an online class. The way professor Chang has it set up there are only 4 tests and a group project. The exams are all based on the book, more so concepts than definitions. He's a great professor, he just fails to make the class online-friendly. I would've enjoyed the class more if it was in person, so wait to take it if you can.
Chang is definitely a good lecturer and tries his best to build relationships with students. However, the online format of this course definitely made it harder. Your grade was almost solely based on four tests and they relied heavily on the textbook (as in you're gonna need to read every word of every chapter multiple times).
The problem I had with this class wasn't so much the professor, but the class itself. There was too much to cover, and aspects of it weren't given sufficient detail. Oftentimes, Prof. Chang would brush over these aspects with a "it's complicated." I'm a non-major, so I'd only recommend this class to people who are majoring in psych.
Professor Chang made the class extremely hard for no good reason. We had 25 minutes to do 50 questions on the exam so regardless if you knew the info or not, you didn't have time to think and couldn't do well on the exams. When students came to him with concerns about exams, he didn't care at all. He didn't seem to care about student's wellbeing.
Dr. Chang is a very nice guy and enthusiastic about the subject he teaches. I would not take this class again because of how much memorization is necessary for the exams, which basically makes up the entire grade of the class. There's so much content to read over and learn at once, and this overwhelmed me. Though, the content is very interesting!
Hes runs a tough course, but it forces you to actually learn the material. I have retained what Ive learned in his classroom better than any other class Ive taken this far. He also brings a great philosophical approach to everything he presents, and is very flexible with office hours to go in depth on ideas.
30min 50q exams, video on, questions are locked as you go, can't review what you got wrong, textbook heavy. No rubric for the final presentation that's 1/5 of grade. Didn't upload slides bc they're "intellectual property." Spent a lot of time during lecture talking abt himself & ignored raised hands. Didn't seem to care abt feedback from students.
This was the most interesting class I've ever taken. Dr. Chang's lectures were extremely interesting and he related it to his life in a way that was engaging and made the concepts more understandable. There isn't homework except studying and the tests were easy with a lot of memorization. Everything was on paper, not online.
Gives no material or support to students. Tests were not representative of textbook material that students were forced to rely on due to professors lack of any technology use. Worst class format.
For people who want to take his class just be aware that nothing is online everything is in person. no laptops are allowed in the class or phones and he will call you out if you go on your phone. doesn't use canvas or anything he hands out exam grades in lecture. you have no resources other then lecture and discussion and office hours.
Was the most interesting lecture I had during my time here! Would definitely recommend.
Has an old school way of grading exams. He will not hand back the exams unless specifically asked by a student, which then you can head over to office hours in person. Does not allow lecture recordings and will call you out if you are on your phone in lecture. Some of his exams had very specific questions about the book, focused on small details.
Everything is in-person, you cannot receive notes or updates outside of lecture. There is a no-technology policy, so all your notes have to be handwritten. You must throughly read the textbook since most textbook-based questions are intricate details. The most stressed for a class I have ever been. Avoid this professor if you can.
I disliked class because he did not allow electronics in class (ie phones and computers) so everyone had to take handwritten notes and if he sees you on your phone (he always will) he'll stop lecturing in the 150 person class and stare at you and ask if you're done. All texts multiple choice but still difficult because you never know what he'll ask
Very interesting class but NO ELECTRONICS were allowed during lecture. He explains difficult topics well and gives great analogies. The class is very heavily graded on 5 exams. 20% of each exam is based on random textbook info. Hit or miss on exams.
His no-electronics rule wasn't too bad for me, but his lack of a canvas site was annoying. The tests are based on very tiny details that you blink and will miss, and they aren't handed back so you don't even know what you did wrong. The lectures were interesting, but I was so focussed on making sure I wrote everything I couldn't appreciate them.
His no-electronic policy was really tough, and all the tests are complete memorization. Very reading heavy for tests that have a minority of textbook specific questions. For what it's worth, abnormal psych was interesting to learn about.
This class is based very heavily on five exams throughout the semester. The exams are very detail oriented and on both textbook and lecture. This makes them difficult due to each exam being on multiple very long chapters. This professor does not give study guides so it is very difficult to know what to focus on for the exams. Avoid this professor.
The class is graded off 5 exams. Exams are very difficult and based off specific textbook questions. You never get a break with exams every two weeks. It is hard to understand material in lecture as you are so focused on writing everything down since he doesn't post the slides or lecture recordings after class. Avoid this professor. An awful class.
Any technology was forbidden. Do you take notes on your iPad/laptop? Too bad better get a note pad and pen, that goes for everything. There is no class page to see your grades on and your 4 exam grades will be shown to you in class when he calls you up. I would have passed if I knew how close I was and done the end of the semester extra credit :(
Professor Chang has no respect for his students. Exams are nit-picky and often don't cover central material from class, he says things are on the exams that aren't, and he refuses to post any class material because it's his "intellectual property". His GSIs are not told what is on the test, and no canvas site. Talks about himself endlessly.
This class is VERY test-heavy. If you miss one class you are basically done for unless you know someone in the class who takes good notes. there is no canvas site and technology is not allowed in the class. lectures are not recorded and if you miss a class notes will not be sent to you unless you were in the hospital or had COVID.
Awful professor. Chooses not to use Canvas (unlike every other professor at U-M) and puts random information scattered throughout the textbook chapter in the tests. Also has a strange "no-tech" policy meaning no iPad or computer notes. Interesting material but awful professor made this a really bad class. Would not take again
Professor Chang's a great teacher and super passionate about the subject. The lecture is heavy but interesting, and the textbook is long but manageable. Go to class, read the textbook, and you'll get an A. Super nice guy. Seriously though, go to class. Exams are 60% lecture 30% textbook.
Interesting material, even though it wasn't on PP, which could be frustrating. The tests seemed fine, just make sure to also read the book. There's some/a lot of memorization. You're graded on 5 exams & two 1 page reaction papers.
Whether or not you like Dr. Chang will depend on context: I had him for summer classes, two summers in a row, where class sizes were small. He's old-school, so if you have a strong preference towards using classroom technology/dislike traditional lectures, you might not vibe with him. Personally he's my fav professor: strict, but clear and fair.
Interesting psych class, but Prof. Chang's strict no-electronics policy and test-heavy grading make it a challenge. Thankfully, Unstuck AI was a big help for study prep.
He's a nice guy and lectures are interesting. Exams are terrible. You have to remember the tiniest details from the textbook. Unless you're really into psych I wouldn't recommend. Taking 2 other 300 levels and this is my toughest class. Just take it with the other professor.
Dr. Chang's grading seems tough, since grades are only determined by 5 exams + discussion grades, but seriously if you read the textbook, attend lecture, and go to discussion, you'll be fine (tons of good Quizlets out there!). He's a really caring professor, and is clearly super knowledgeable and passionate! #READTHETEXTBOOK #GOTOLECTURE #10/10 !!!
He is passionate and enjoyable to be taught by. Yes, the expectations are heavier considering you must read the textbook and take handwritten notes, but if you properly put in the time and effort, you succeed. The tests are no problem at all as long as you've paid attention and read the book. Great person, awesome course; he's funny too :)
I enjoyed having this professor. Exams are difficult but he offers lots of extra credit opportunities to balance the difficulty. Just go to class, read the book, and do the extra credit to succeed in this class!
Dr. Chang is a sort of tough professor but great overall. If you put in the time and effort an A is very achievable. No technology during lecture, only handwritten notes. The small details will come up during exams!! There are multiple opportunities for extra credit that you should definitely take as well.
It has been years since I took his class and I remember it being the best I've ever taken in multiple different programs. He had such a unique way in approaching the subject matter and if you needed help he was there to help. What a breath of fresh air, and he teaches like he's in a 20 person class which you don't get often enough in a big uni.
I have never met someone who talks about themself as much as Chang. What an ego. The exams are extremely difficult in this class, and he does not allow tech in class. No canvas notes. I had to miss class because of a family function, and he would not give me the notes because it wasn't a life-or-death emergency.
The exams are extremely difficult and nitpicky, and count for 90% of our grade. No review materials or sessions. Chang often tests on the tiniest of details and makes up his own psychological terms that he expects us to know for the exams. Also, section is completely useless, and its pretty apparent that he does not communicate with his GSIs.
Honestly, probably one of the best psychology professors i've ever had! He's nice, funny and very clearly passionate about his work. Textbook was a lot and required but he only covered some things from each chapter so your responsible for the rest for the exams (5). Hes available after class and answers questions. Many chances for extr crdt. 10/10
Chang is funny and interesting to listen to (does talk about himself a lot though, lol), but get ready to memorize pages and pages of the textbook---exams are difficult not because of content but because of the tiny details that come up. No electronics, no Canvas; lecture is pretty much mandatory if you want to do good on tests. Overall fine.
Smart guy but not humble. Exams asked for information briefly mentioned in the textbook or in one word in the lecture notes. He does not post lecture notes even though he asks for 5 note takers at the beginning of the semester to send him their notes. Attendance is mandatory to score well on exams. Extra credit is offered but exams got harder.
This class is primarily graded by 5 exams (non-cumulative). It is textbook and lecture based, but he does not post any of the notes if you miss a lecture and you cannot expect to get it from him even if you ask. He picks out small details from the textbook and expects you to know them on the exams. He has a big ego and is funny though...
Conflicted. Chang is funny and engaging, but the class is brutally hard. Grade is only 5 tests, no Canvas, no notes if you miss lecture. Exams pull tiny details from 100+ pages of readings. Discussions pointless (can't discuss lecture). I studied intensely and still struggled a lot.
Overall, I have mixed opinions on Dr. Chang. The workload was heavy, but that is sort of expected for a class with so much content. If you go to lecture, read the book, study a lot, and complete the extra credit, an A is very achievable. However, it was annoying that he didn't have a canvas, and talked about himself a lot. Interesting class though.
