Easygoing, friendly, extra credits
very helpful office hours and lab, clear on whats to be done
gives handouts and review materials
very friendly, helpful, everything is good about him. The class itself seems fairly easy. Just make you that you go to lectures.
VERY EASY! gives many hints for quizzes and tests
He is not good at lecturing at all. He goes way too fast and he doesn't really explain how to do the problems. I only passed because of my lab teacher
Lectures are pretty easy to understand, just go and you should be fine on the quizes that are in lab every week.
He's the best chemistry teacher I've ever had!! Very helpful and clear lectures with organized labs. His quiz reviews are very helpful too. Just do what he recommends and you'll do great!!
He is a great teacher, for his lectures are clear and organized. The material is quite difficult to grasp, as expected of almost any chem class, but he made these diffiuct ideas easier to understand.
easy to understand
This class is decent. He's a cool guy and all, but I felt that his exams and final were pretty hard. As long as you go to most lectures and pay attention, you should pass the class
Love his class. He makes it so easy to understand pretty difficult material. I mean just go to class and study off his lecture notes and it shouldn't be hard to get an A. He has past exams in the back of the notes, what more do you want.
do everything he says, and you will get an A. great class, great teacher.
he's cool and one of a kind
Explains too fast in labs, but is helpful to students.
ed chichester is straight forward, well organized, and very clear. he never makes anything more complicated or confusing than it needs to be. he has a very subtle sense of humor which is GREAT. class is always productive and very interesting. he is totally understanding and kind. i love the guy.
dude, he straight up sucks
Very good teacher. Explains too fast at times but will tell you whats going to be on the quizzes. Easy class.
Excellent and effective teacher. Super organized. He tells you exactly what to study for quizzes and exams. Easy class!
Not helpful or clear.
He's a very good teacher and makes sure that students understand his lecture. He gives bonus quizzes and give a review for regular quizzes.
You will get an A if you take him
chichester is a great teacher. not too hard on grading and pretty laid back. great teacher.
He teaches at a very fast pace. You just can't miss class, cuz if you do u'll be so way behind. At times he can be unclear, but its all in the reading. He's an ok professor.
Ed Chichester is very organized and clear about the info he presents. He also has a lot of patients and will spend time with you to make sure you understand the material
Chichester is awesome!!!! He makes chemistry fun and is very helpful. He's my favorite this semester by far!
i only had him for lab, but he was one of those that were like "i dont wanna be here any more than you do" so he was extremely chill and just worked everything with you to get you out quick. 3 hour lab turned into like 1.5-2 hours.
People always say he's easy, but to be honest if you follow his "study guide" handout there is no way you can fail the class. The amount of time you put in studying is directly reflected on your grade. Makes organic chem interesting and fun. I had him for lab and lecture. I really recommend him!
Lectures flowed smoothly with a bit of humor mixed into his clear/organized presentations. A's are easily acheived if you study for the weekly quizzes. Tests are simply a collection of past quiz questions. Prof always willing to help if you're unclear on any material. Definitely a great teacher.
just transfered, took his lab and lecture. so much simpler and more interesting than any other chem class i have ever taken, even in high school. definetly take him for lab and lecture. 7:30 am lab but he made it interesting to actually stay awake. basically gives you the answer on lab reports/worksheets. study for the quizzes, they make or break u
He's a nice a guy and his lectures are straightforward, but the material in general is hard, at least for me it was. But if you do all the labs and study for the quizzes it's very posible to get a B even if you're struggling.
Take him for Lab & Lecture!! He is an amazing teacher, and always willing to help. As long as you do really well on the weekly quizzes, you'll be fine... just make sure to study for EACH quiz, don't get behind!!
This class what a lot of work! I really dreaded taking this class, but was really surprised at how much I like it. Ed was great - always ready to help and very approachable. He was also pretty entertaining. Don't fall behind on the weekly quizzes or else you're sunk!
Chemistry is never easy but this guy has really good notes and he's good at lecturing...he teaches out of a notes that he made and in his notes he gives you practice quizes which help a lot...Study a lot though, it helps
Definately recommend taking his lab and lecture. He tells you all the answers to the lab reports, all you have to do is turn it in. Try not to miss a class cuz he has a quiz every lab day worth 40pts each. Just stay on top of the information and there is no way to fail. GOOD LUCK!!!!
No B's. He is GREATS. All you have to do is go to lecture and lab and it's an esay A. Chem 30B is a lot easier then CHEM 30A. He give you a lot of oppurtunities to do well. There is about over 70 bonus points that are offered throughout the semester. (Come on, you cant beat that!!!!!!!)
The material isn't easy. You have to put in some effort in the class. But since we have soooo much extra credit opportunities, an A is a cinch. I found his lectures very good! Make sure to attend EVERY lecture. Prior to taking this class, I was so scared of the subject matter, but his class made me very interested in O-chem.
Teaching style is very clear. He gives hints on lectures so you better attend every lecture. He gives some interesting anecdote while teaching. No need for textbooks if you can borrow it from a friend.
do not take this teacher! he thinks that you should look up all the information so he does not have to teach it. kelly writes the tests and final and shes a much better tracher anyway!
Great Chemistry Prof! If you go to his lectures then you will certainly pass his class. His midterm and final are tough, but his quizzes are fairly easy if you study notes. Very organized, explains material effectively. Easygoing and funny. Makes Chemistry easier to understand. Take him if you are worried about passing a chemistry course.
In a nutshell, Dr. Chichester is one of the strongest instructors at SJSU- hands down! His A's don't come free- you have to work and be on top of his "green sheets," attend all his labs and lectures! He is EXTREMELY organized so his lectures are easy to follow. A+ Teacher
Probably one of the better qualified instructors at SJSU. Chichester provides lots of interesting facts which makes the subject feel more relavant. Lectures go fast. It's an easy A if you go to lecture, do the reading, and do all the practice problems. Unfortunately, the lab instructors are awful.
ed has been my favorite teacher thus far at sjsu. he explains ideas in simple terms and will go over them again if the class seems unclear. he's funny and knows what's up. and after a while there is something very attractive about him :) i was sad when the semester was over
I was scared about 30B but Dr. Chichester keeps it very simple and straightforward! Go to lecture and write down what he puts on the overhead in the class notes and take the practice quizzes and you'll do fine. He's a very fair instructor with what he assigns. Getting an A in this class is well within reach if you do the work. Great teacher.
The man is like a Chem fiend and his lecs are dull. In order to get an A, you must attend all lectures and do everything on the greensheet. Perfect attendance and note-taking alone will not guarantee an A. Reading the books is a MUST. Overall, the course is tough but not impossible. Procrastinators beware since things catch-up quite fast.
so, if you procrastinate, better get rid of your bad habits. everything is laid out in front of you from day 1 on the green sheet. do as you are told and you will do fine. there are quizes each week in lab. STUDY FOR ALL OF THEM. he is a passionate professor and is fair. expect to work hard if you are an average student.
This class was hard for me but Chichester is a good professor and is very nice and willing to help. His lectures are somewhat easy to follow but you MUST stay on top of the work or you will get left behind quickly. Just keep up with the current chapters and reading and you should be fine.
Chichester is a funny guy. He really knows his stuff. There is a ton of material but as long as you go to class and study for the weekly quizzes you should pass with an A. Makes learning organic chemistry fun :)
Very funny professor. I always and forever hate chemistry. I never understood it. He made learning chemistry fun. He is totally sweet. Uses the textbook a lot in his lectures but he also provides online lecture notes to printout for the lecture. If you can take Sherman Lee for your lab. He is a great lab instructor...
It can be difficult paying attention in class. Attend lectures, take notes, and definitely read the book because his lectures alone cannot help you on the tests.
Awesome instructor. I walked into that class convinced I would fail because I hate math! Prof. Chichester took the time to explain everything in minute detail, and would go over it until you were sure you had it mastered. As long as you attend class/lab religiously, read the textbook, and practice, you can pass this class.
Chichester is really into his teaching and relates it to today.. sometimes because it was his senior thesis but interesting all together. He doesn't like to slow down so he'll move through the notes quickly, but will explain everything thoroughly for you! Ask questions, go to class! He's really funny!
ick. not helpful.the book makes more sense than he does.
Ed's lectures go by quite fast and I'll agree with the person bellow me that reading the book is a must since it makes more sense than his lectures. If you don't go over the material before class, you'll have trouble understanding the lecture. Going to his class is a must, since he give students hints for the next quiz and exams. TAKE!
Chichester goes through lecture a bit fast but tells you what you need to know. He posts his powerpoint lectures online so you can look at them or print them out to study with. Read the chapters assigned in the textbook and do the problems indicated in the syllabus, it'll be VERY helpful when it comes to the tests. Similar problems appear.
he was an ok professor i did not really learn a lot from him. i learned more from my lab instructor. chichester tells you to study certain things for the test, like memorizes certain elements on the periodic table, but then they are not even on the test. and the book did not really help at all.
I learned more from my lab instructer. He tells you, this is a vital part of Chemistry you have to know this, he says that to almost every thing. quize's are similar to the final, he tells you to study one thing and the test is not the same. Make friends with someone that has lab before you if you have hope for quizes. Good Luck
class was very hard. only teacher that teaches this class so good luck. what made the class hard was the material. what made the class worse was how fast he went through the material. lab was hard. take apel. gives answers to lab =) but a very bitter man. quiz every week - hard! studying the material everyday before class is a must to pass. GOOD LU
both semesters were terrible! WORST TEACHER AT STATE EVER he doesnt teach he avoids true answers 2 Qs and just avoids them like he goes in a circle around it... and the lab teachers are the real teachers... take it at city u'll b better off... i stopped going to lec cuz it was so useless and still passed
Goes through the material WAY too fast and his lectures are pretty pointless. Chem 30a is easier than chem 30b. Chem 30a READ THE TEXT BOOK; chem 30 b- read his class notes; the book is useless for the most part. Quiz every week and is basically memorizing the class notes. Good luck
Descent teacher. Rushes through the material but the material is gone over in lab. Basically, this lecture is useless.
Both classes were easy, material wasnt hard to understand. Prof. Chichester did go fast during his lectures but there's too much material to cover to go slow for everyone. 30A had 3 quizes and 1 midterm, midterm was really easy. 30B has a quiz every week in lab, i studied 2 hours before the lab class and nvr recived lower than a B on a single quiz
This class is hard because there is so much information to cover. there are weekly quizes in the lab which require a lot of studying. if i studied for the quiz before lecture then lec became so much more clear and the info and quiz was a lot easier. the midterm and final are hard! study!!!
Attend class/complete all assignments and I guarantee you at least a B. Exams based on problems done in lab and lecture. Half the questions are based on the reading. Final was extremely random though so don't bother to study. I did and it was a complete waste of time! I ended up with a B+ in the class with minimal effort. Chichester rocks :)
Don't like this teacher. He doesn't go over the material too well and goes through it quickly. Not hard nor easy, and you don't have to show up for class because notes are posted online.
I hated him in 30A cause he was behind the syllabus's schedule so he blew by some lessons and he was a bit confusing when he taught off his powerpoint slides. But I loved him in 30B because he was organized(we had lecture manuals this time), on schedule, was funny, had good stories to back up his lessons, and was always at office hours and helpful
Class was not the easiest but you can get a B no problem. He can get confusing sometimes and a bit fast but overall it was pretty clear. You will not use the textbook unless you want it for reference.
He talks & goes through the slides very fast. There are about 12 labs, 3 exams, 1 midterm, 1 final, & 1 paper. Lab is a huge part of the final grade, so it helps to do well on lab reports. He provides lecture slides online, but he skips & adds stuff. There may be things you need to know in the lecture that are not on the slides or on the textbook.
there's so much material to cover, he has to go SUPER fast to get everything in. he's a witty person, and was VERY nice regarding my final grade. bumped my grade up .5% in order for me to get a B- instead of a C+. easy A if you do all the suggested hw + had prior chem knowledge
If you attend lecture (Lab is mandatory if you want to pass) I can guarentee you at least a B. Pay attention, his lecture is only 50 something minutes and ask questions after class if you're confused. He is there to help you. I had Apel for lab and even though he scared me, he was willing to help you and answer any questions you have.
Well if you dont understand or like chem, it can be hard. My friend and I were lost most of the time. But he is a good guy, he means well.
Chichester is a great chemistry professor. Although he goes through his slides fast, it just means it's not going to be on the exams. He tries to makes sure his students understands the concepts by doing examples over and over again until it sticks in their brains. His quizzes are kind of hard. I failed 2 or 3 of them, but I ended up with A.
this class was ok i took it along with micro 20 so it was a bad idea on my part. i got a C+ generally this class is straigh foward. you should do good if you study hard.
I don't know why people are complaining about him. I haven't had chemistry since sophomore year and don't remember much, but I aced his exams and quizzes. Why? It's called studying + reading out of the book every week, not just cramming right before exams. Keep up with the reading and you should get an A.
Last time I took Chemistry was sophomore year of high school and I found this class to be refreshing. I learned a lot more from the book, but I learned the problems and test format from the lecture. He goes through the information fast, but he generally addresses all the information thats going to be on the test and practices the problems with you.
He needs to cover material better and re-do the teaching curriculum. It's the same dull thing every semester - unfortunately he's the only one who teaches LECTURE.
I have no idea what people are talking about. Pretty much if you attend the lecture/lab and pay attention, you'll be likely to get an A. He clarifies everything for you if you go ask him, and he tries his best to help you get a good grade. I loved having him for chem and I enjoyed the class. I hated it in high school hands down, but I love it now.
I learned more from the labs than lectures. Thought i had an A, but the final was awful. He doesn't use the book well and hes really boring in lecture
A lot of what he tests on is based on the textbook, but there are those questions that are solely based on lecture. Attend lectures b/c towards the end of the semester he gives EC to those who show up. A really nice guy and a really easy class if you read the book based on his reading schedule. Got an A with effort.
The overall class was ok, but his teaching methods weren't very good. He wasn't clear, as in things that were on the test werent things he covered in class. He was on ok guy, but if avoidable take another person.
I had him for both chem 30 a and b. He is a great professor that explains everything in detail for you. He gives you extra credit so don't worry if you didnt do too well on the weekly quizzes. He talks at a good pace. The book really helps by explaining the material that you were confused about during the lectures. Do the practice quizzes.
He has a very strong chemistry background. Attending lecture is a must because it is basically stuff you will see on the quizzes, midterm, and finals. Try to keep up with him. He moves from one topic to another very quickly.
He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches but the course itself is difficult. Since he's teaching hundreds of students at once he won't teach slowly just for you. Be prepared to do lots of studying on your own.
He knows his subject. He is helpful in answering your questions. Lectures are confusing. Read the textbook in order to get a good grade.
Covers the notes well. Occasionally gives out extra credit quizzes.
He goes by the slides quickly. Be on top of your studies if you want to pass this class. You can easily fall behind in this class since he covers a chapter each week. The things he covers within the slides are guaranteed to be on the quizzes. The book is also helpful for studying, but his class notes are very helpful.
It's very possible to get an A (coming from student who only studied the day before and always came to class 10 min late and sat in back lol). Very helpful. Pay attention in lectures because there's extra info to write down in class notes and he tells you which part of notes are important/on quiz. Very approachable, nice. Gives bonus quizzes!
Took chem30a and chem30b with him. Found chem30b way easier. You can buy his class notes from chemistry department, and as long as you show up to lectures and write down a few extra notes, you're set to get an A. Also gives out bonus quizzes towards middle and end of semester.
I wouldn't say he's he most amazing lecturer but if you pay attention and take notes, his lectures are helpful, barely touched the textbook, didn't use the workbook at all. You don't need it, he goes over enough. Pair him with a really good lab instructor (Sherman Lee). Quizzes are kinda hard but pretty irrelevant, midterm and final are easyyy
I wouldn't say he's he most amazing lecturer but if you pay attention and take notes, his lectures are helpful, barely touched the textbook, didn't use the workbook at all. I'm sorry but I have to be honest...I hated this class. Science has always been my strong suit, but not with his class. He goes through the notes waaay too fast that you can't even write notes of your own about it. I don't recommend his lecture...unless you're a book worm...because reading your textbook is your only chance to pass...
People complain about how fast he goes, but you have all of his slides in the notes you buy. Each and every one of them. I'm not a Chem person, but with studying, I pulled a B+. An A is possible because I was 2% away from it. Study for him. He's good at explaining things. He's nice and approachable. Take him.
I got an A in his class. I just want to say always attend his lectures!(Lab is also mandatory--easy A for the labs) If you understand all the material, then you'll definitely get an A.
You really have to read the book in order to pass the class. He is so confusing because he goes trough the notes super fast and at times he is all over the place and his examples are all over the place. I got an A in the class because I read the book but his lectures are all over the place.
He is very clear about what he teaches in class. Professor Chichester has never given a single pop quiz in class. If you need extra help on getting concepts explained more clearly after each lecture, he is more than happy to explain to you the concepts if you still don't understand them during the lectures.
Make use of your tuition by attending this class. It will definitely help you. BUY his class notes because everything you need to know for the midterm/final and quizzes are in his notes. I got a whopping A+ for simply studying. If I can, you can.
I took his lecture early in the morning at 9AM which was tough because he is very monotone and boring. He goes through the lecture pretty quickly too, and chem is a lot to take in. Regardless, he is a great professor who is very knowledgable and helpful one-on-one. He knows his info thats for sure. Would recommend but maybe not early in the morning
I took this class Spring 2014. His class was straightforward; attend class and review your notes and you'll ace the exams. There were bland parts to his lectures but the majority is interesting. Exams during lab and one paper graded leniently.
