Awesome Professor
he is the worst teacher i have ever had...he needs to go back to the 1700's (where he came from), talk about boring...bring something to do during class
Ok People, he may be VERY hard, I too know this, but he is damn good. If you can hang with him, you are hanging with the best of them! He doesn't even like me and I'm telling you to take him b/c it is way worth the work.
Class is very easy. No need to attend lecture.
he is one of the best teachers i've ever had
the worst ****in teacher in the world! i failed that class and worked my ass off! the 25 page semester paper was excessive! he drinks soda in class everyday! he is boring as hell! grades harder than he should...
The first half of the Sem. I thought he was the best, however his humor and style wear out around mid term. You will learn from him no doubt. He is worth taking, just brace yourself for the second half.
The guy should teach in harvard he is like the best i wish they had more guyz like him in cmu the best teacher and a real teacher who teachs not one of those A givin yahooozz
He is an excellent teacher. He knows everything about political theory, and he wil take you up on any offer to argue. He tries to connect with students with humor. His tests are easy because he gives you the questions and then answers them in class.
You read A LOT of books, but keep up and the class isn;t hard. He is an alright teacher, with a strange sense of humor
horrible- there is nothing more to say about it.
Sooo easy..I never attended lecture and did fine on tests. He gives you all of the questions on the test a week before. No homework either.

He is a really good teacher and cares about how well you do in his class. He may come off the first day a little harsh but after that he is a GREAt guy.Gives a studyguide for test 1 week in advance with all the questions there would be. Study and do well.
Does come off hard at the beginning, but is actually pretty funny in a nerdy way. Nice guy, loves his subject. Study the study guide and ace the test. You will end up learning a lot.
Clayton is a great teacher. Go to class, do the questions, and talk every so often - you'll get an A. Knows a lot about the subject, made it interesting. FUNNY!
He is a very knowledgeable professor who is skilled at conveying the information to his students. Taking a class with him is well worth it because he will supply you with the foundations for all political theory and you'll have fun in the process
worst prof ever....he once said that he wished he lived in the 1800's...i wish he did too so i wouldnt have to deal with his weirdness....
Monotone voice puts you to sleep. Even if he gives out test questions, they are all essay and are around 20-25 that you have to know for every test. Hard grader, takes off points even if you have exactly the answer he gives the class.
He is a very interesting teacher. There are a lot of books to read, but he will go over all the answers for the exam. I would take another class with him.
This guy rocks. He knows the books inside out and loves to make goofy jokes throughout the sem. Loves it when you challenge him; and he never backs down or avoids a question, unusual for a PS teacher. I would take him again.
If you can stay awake through his lecture and write a paper, and you have TONS of time to spend studying, then you will do fine. DO NOT go to his office hours he will just talk and talk and talk and never get to the point.
He is one of the best professors I have had. He is extremely intelligent and really motivates you to learn. He does more than just preach liberal rhetoric and encourages original thought.

This guy knows his stuff. The reading seems overwhelming at first but the lectures are pretty interesting if you go to class. The tests are right from questions sheets you receive in class so studying isn't too bad. He definitely loves political theory
Clayton is a great prof who knows his stuff! Just study and understand what he says, and you'll be good. He made me want to get up for my 9am.
I adored him! Even though his class was hard, he was great. I had a computer glitch and he was very understanding. I would have taken him for other classes, if possible. He made me want to learn...inspirational!
Boring as heck but if you choose to learn there is a lot to learn. BEWARE of engaging in any discourse in his office hours, unless you have hours to chat.
The class is really easy, but the professor is really boring. There is also a lot of busy work. The graded work is ok and the tests are ok, but some of the assignments that he just came up with during class were not fun.
Dont take this class if Clayton is teaching it. He is one of the worst teachers in the history of political science. I hated that class. It had so much potential but I just couldnt stand the Professor
It was very hard and so boring. the tests were impossible
If you enjoy learning take this prof. He is extremely knowledgeable and what he does not know he researches. You must participate and do the readings to benefit from this class but if you do you will benefit throughout your college career. Take him if you are interested in being challenged.
I liked the class besides the fact that lectures were pretty boring. Not too hard as long as you do what you are supposed to do. You don't really need to do the reading and he gives you 15 essay questions to memorize and like 5 are on the test...study before the night before is what i learned!
I was excited about political science till I took this class. There are a lot of assignments that hardly add up to any points, but the test questions are right from the book, and he gives you the questions beforehand. He likes to talk A LOT, and gets sidetracked. Not a class for 10 am.
Clayton is the master. He knows political science and much more if you go to his office hours you will find that out. This class is not hard if you work at it. Read as much as you can but you can also get by when you do not because his lectures are so good.
Great Professor, knows what he's talking about. Always there to help. Tests-tough essays, but he gives the questions at least a week prior, and he'll read the draft of your answers and help you with it. Same with big semester paper. No actual homework, just reading he covers in lecture very well.
Dr. Clayton is very intelligent and interesting. His lectures are great. Exams come straight from study questions.
I loved this class. Professor Clayton taught it very well, and also was funny and explained things perfectly. Discussion in this class was fun. Take him!
A good professor for the most part. Unfortunately, he often takes the tact of acting as an itellectual snob. Nonetheless, he is an excellent teacher with a good background in philosophy.
GREAT CLASS!!! I took it for fun and learning. I got both from it ---ok more learning than fun, but so worth taking! The authors we read were fantastic. The questions asked were mind stretching. I'd take him again and again if I could justify it in my budget.
I agree, he can 'come off' as an intellectual snob, but that is perception, he is probably joking. One of the most helpful professors at CMU, LOVES LEARNING and passing on that knowledge to his students, definatly a rational authoritarian charater (take 375 and your get it) 375 = amazing if you are interesting in learning some real world poli theory
I absolutely loved him as a teacher. I think he's excellent! His lectures are great and he encourages the class to participate. He challenges ideas and questions commonly accepted ideas. I would definitely recommend anyone taking the class!
This class is WAY HARDER than PSC 105 non-honors. I do not recommend taking it Honors unless you want to write a 12 page paper and have all essay exams which are not easy. Clayton is a nice man, and he can be quite entertaining, but he is also quite arrogant and acts "holier than thou" and it annoys me to no end.
Nice guy. Not the most interesting prof, but he makes a rather boring subject bearable. I would not reccomend this class unless you are a PSC major.
I took political theory as an undergrad. I wish I had invested into it. I did enjoy the classes, and the guy has a great dry sense of humor. The readings are all classic political science works.
Dr. Clayton is one of my all time favorite professors! His lectures were very interesting, class discussions were very engaging, and his feedback was clear and helpful. Also, he's cute and funny.....I'm bummed that i've graduated and no longer get to take his classes.
Very Helpful- I enjoyed the class and thought he was a pretty interesting guy. I def liked his liberal side and having him talk about dave camp. I recommend the class for a UP or for your major
This class was very interesting! His teaching style is clear and easy to follow. I really enjoyed the class up until I got my final grade. For warming to future students, this professor has NO IDEA how to use Blackboard and it's online tools!!! His ignorance cost me my grade!
I found this class to be extremely difficult because I have absolutely no interest in politics. So, if politics is your thing, you'll do fine. The tests are all essay and the 12-page paper is a killer. It's hard to stay awake during class. Just read the book because you can't take notes on what he says.
THIS CLASS. Wow, is all I can say. I am completely agreeing with the comment from 12/18/08, probably someone in my class, that the class is ridiculous. If I wouldn't have branched out, eventually, and got to know other students, I really wouldn't have done such a great job. READ READ READ, that's all I can say. GOOD LUCK!!!
Dr. Clayton treat students respectfully, but he always push his ideas when he was teaching. He was also very strict in papers.
Clayton is tough but worth taking his class. He knows his crap and is always willing to help out by e-mail, office hours or whatever. He can be partisan but attempts to help the class see both sides of the issue. Has a real dry sense of humor but it can be funny usually.
HORRIBLE. The man talks like Ben Stein from Ferris Bueller. Has a beard that went out of style in the nineteenth century, and is quite dull. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
This is a extremely hard class, I studied hard for all three exams and still did not get the grades I wanted. There are 5 pop quizzes throughout the semester so you basically have to go to the classes, and read the book because the exams are all from the book, he lectures do not help much.
The class is generally very boring except for a few spots that may incite class debate/discussion. He is extremely disorganized and literally takes a whole month to grade exams. Rambles on, trying not to be partisan, but makes "clever" quips at those with a differing point of view. Grades pretty hard and doesn't make clear what he's looking for.
Very difficult to do well in this class. Tests were 50% mult choice with two 25% essay questions. If you knew all multiple choice, but didn't do well on even one essay question, you were sunk. He graded on punctuation, etc....not how well you knew the material. The class required a HUGE paper worth huge chunk of grade. Don't take his class!
Not a very good teacher. Socrates is his hero; he tries to use the Socratic method in his class, but his method is pathetic, lazy even. He?s oblivious that he needs to illuminate concepts for his students; and he would actually get upset when students wouldn?t talk and do his job. His discussions are a mess, no form, no organization; no correlation
He gives you the study guide for each exam with the same questions, that is GREAT! But the class isn't really intresting, its a talking based class and no one talks because no one can understand the reading! The book are needed but you can find them online, or audiobook for cheaper!
Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't show up you aren't going to do well. You have to read a ton and if you don't do the readings your screwed for the tests and discussion. Nice guy but doesn't curve tests and is hard on grading. For the papers you should send it in for his review or else you won't do well
One of the best teachers I've had at college. Very knowledgeable; I learned a ton. I really like how the class was step up too. Two short papers, three essay exams with 7 questions each , you pick 6. But he really prepared you for them. Overall, just a great experience.
I love Clayton, but I wouldn't suggest taking this class because you need to fill the UP, unless you're interested in Political Theory. He's nuts for it, and if you're not, you won't get a good grade. The class is you read the books out of class and have discussions in class, there's three exams, two papers, and that's it.
I was hesitant about this class after hearing about long lectures and papers, but I ended up really enjoying Professor Clayton's class. He is very passionate about politics, and he actually has a lot of interesting things to say regarding the subject. Don't let the 12 page paper scare you!
Fantastic class, incredibly interesting. Clayton leads a discussion rather than lecture. I had 275 on a Friday, but it was worth getting up for. He takes attendance, but only to boost your grade. Should've had an A-, gave me an A because I participated. Highly recommend class and prof.
So Dr. Clayton is one of the most amazing professors I've ever had, probably my favorite. I've taken all of his classes offered. If you like political theory and philosophical discussions, this is the place for you!!! While Clayton is very privileged, he teaches feminist theory with grace and empathy, not to mention incredible insight.
One of my favorite prof. I can't even believe he has bad reviews, these people must really hate school. Very smart, he really makes you think. He over prepares you for the tests and papers so if you fail you either don't go to class or you online shop the whole time. Pay attention & take notes and it's an easy A.
Dr. Clayton seemingly prefers a pedagogical style which encourages a dialectic between student and teacher (or whatever position he embodies and its opposition). So, be prepared to actively and intellectually engage. If not, then be prepared for a monologue. Dr. Clayton is a wonderful, caring, and goofy person.
His class is pretty simple. If you do the readings then you pass the class and get an A. He's a fascinating guy, he has corny jokes but he'll tell them to the class if you beg enough. Overall, he gets into pretty long tangents but he is a good teacher so he helps you really understand the content. If you go to class you're good to go. Also a beard
Dr. Clayton is a great professor. He really cares about his students and you can tell he loves his job. The lectures themselves are kind of boring, but he goes directly over the test questions which is extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this class to a friend.
Go to class and pay attention. His study guide has the exam questions on it and as a matter of fact, he'll answer the questions in class if you ask. He looks for questions and gives you extra points if you participate. My only regret is not being able to take another class with him. He is a wonderful professor and human.
It was a pleasure to attend class with Professor Clayton. His class has very little emphasis on lecture, and more about discussion between students and himself. He's a very compassionate and goofy guy. Definitely recommend Professor Clayton!
If you read the books and do the papers at full length, it will be fine. Prof. Clayton is a great professor that genuinely cares about his students so much!
If youre wanting to take this class for a UP then dont. Worst class I took and it just happened to be in the final semester of my undergrad. Tons of reading and youll have to study incredibly hard for exams. Only take this class if reading books about politics interests you. Professor isnt a bad guy but the class is horrible.
Majority of the course focuses on reading different texts. I didnt buy any of the books because either I could find them online or they were easily accessible from the library. Very funny. Only had a few papers and a few exams. Does take a while to grade but overall, very understanding and helpful. Strives to help students pass not fail.
Dr. Clayton is a great professor. Anyone who understands the readings, and applies that knowledge, will do just fine in this course. Although this was not a WI course, I still had to do 2 papers. However, if you do the readings and enjoy political philosophy, the papers are not very difficult. PSC 275 is also very centered around open discussion.
Taking PSC275 as an online class was a little tough--it's really fast-paced. You're expected to read and interact with one long reading each week. The midterm and final both had a bank of questions that you have access to, but there are over 30 questions each time and the tests are only 8 questions long. Fine if you're confident with essay tests.
Dr. Clayton is such a nice guy! He was very accessible and empathetic during the semester. He also really cares about the subject and what we are getting from it.
As a person, Clayton is a great guy who I respect. it's just such an awkward environment in every class I've taken w him. I'm not sure why, but it really takes away from my learning. Really draining to go to the class. He's the most accommodating and understanding professor I've ever met, especially when it comes to mental health needs and issues.
This professor is very nice and understanding but being in the class can be draining and confusing. When in class the lectures go way off topic to the point where I had to stop going. Hes not very accessible outside of the classroom and takes away points on essays randomly without explaining why and takes a long time to put in grades.
He just lectures by talking for entire class period, without a powerpoint/anything written on the board. He goes on 30 minute long tangents about things that are unrelated to the course. Also this is supposed to be a poli sci class, but was taught like a poli philosophy class. Very opinionated & liberal. 3 exams 1 paper that's it. Regret taking.
Professor Clayton is an accommodating and goofy guy but not a good professor. His lectures often go off topic and turn into rants. He doesn't use slideshows or the whiteboard when lecturing. He doesn't give clear grading expectations and is extremely woke and far left. He can't go a single class period without spewing leftist propaganda.
I LOVE Dr. Clayton! He is so beyond accommodating and will go out of his way to make sure you get what you need! He is always available to help you, and although he doesn't provide much feedback, if you participate in his office hours, he is always happy to discuss literally anything! I appreciated his classes so much, I took two with him! Yay!
