He is very GQ person with gray hair. Most students in our class liked him so much. He teaches how to academic writing well with many helpful articles and hand-outs. He gives 3 big research papers with peer reviews, plus argument papers for each book(maybe 5). A lot of works were hard, but he helps students well and eagerly! he is really good.
He is really nice to every student. He tried to help everybody and even though you are not a good writer you can get a better grade, when you show your dedication. Go meet him as much as you can. He will help you with all! Although I didn't get an A, I recommend you to take this!!
Taught the best English Class I've ever had! Awesome prof. really helpful, does stuff to mix up class to keep it fresh. It was an 8:30 and it was thrilling enough so that I was more awake than I was at my 9:55 class.
Genuinely passionate professor. Wants students to improve with their writing skills and is a very reasonable grader. By my last research paper I actually enjoyed the entire process of writing and i'd say it was because of his class.
Really a great guy, and great teacher. Not the easiest grader, but you'll learn something, and not completely hate college writing if you get him.
Really a great guy, and great teacher. Not the easiest grader, but you'll learn something, and not completely hate college writing if you get him.
Very passionate teacher. Best I have ever had. Willing to help students, wants to see them do well. Not an easy grader but truly cares about the student. Take this class!
I had prof comstock last semester and I miss him so much. He made college writing fun and I really improved my writing skills!
really great teacher. His classes were engaging. Very passionate. Fair grader. Helpful.
Great guy and helpful professor. I learned a lot and he really cares about each individual student.
Professor Comstock was great. He's really funny and also very helpful. He's not an easy grader but if you work hard, you can get an A. You must read for discussions, but it's not too much reading. He's great, take him!
He was a great teacher. very passionate and I learned a lot. Spends a lot of time on they say/i say which some people didn't like but i used it and thought it was very relevant.
comstock is amazing! i'm in his honors english class right now and its one of my favorites. i thought i was going to hate english at first but comstock makes everything fun and enjoyable. He is extremely funny and always willing to help. Difficult class but very rewarding. I love this class, its a must.
Comsotck is the best professor here at American. It is difficult, but he is so helpful in creating a step by step process in your writing that its actually gets easier. And he's hilarious and wears nice suits!
Take this professor for college writing! If anything, he is nice to look at so you'll want to pay attention. The class was filled with interesting readings. There were 3 papers required. Only one of the papers was a pain to write. The others were based on personal interest. If I were a lit major, I would take him again in a heart beat.
this man is great. he is super nice and will help you with anything. he's down to earth and a great teacher. participate in class a lot and he will love you
Amazing and really helpful teacher really helped me to move my writing skills to the next level ! he is a nice guy that really wants to help his students even though he is not an easy grader, but he will make you a much better writer, and he is funny !
This is a class that heavily depends on the professor teaching it. A writing course has the potential to be very dry. However Comstock makes the material exciting and engaging. I never thought I would be entertained by a lesson about semi-colon and adverbial conjunctions. Stay on top of your work though.
I learned so much from this class. Comstock is a phenomenal professor and made me want to write well. Most people don't get As in the class; however, he provides great feedback on essays and your writing WILL improve. No question. If you have a choice, take one of his classes.
Amazing guy, really helped me a lot, not an easy professor. but he is the best, he will help you develop Take him !! 3 essays and that's it.
Seriously, the one thing that makes me not want to transfer. Hard, awesome class, and passionate prof ;)
Comstock actually knows how to show you how to improve your writing; a rare trait. A's are tough because you have to be a NYTimes editor to get them, but B's are possible. 3 major papers throughout the course. Max is 10 pages. I'd definitely take him again.
Scholarly, but completely down-to-earth. Comstock is one of the few teachers I can call "cool" who also drastically improved my knowledge and writing. He genuinely wants you to succeed in his class, and at times when I was slipping, he made the effort to keep me on track. Great connections to the DC music and journalism scene. I love the guy!
He is an amazing guy with a great shoe collection. He is slightly hipster; however, he doesn't recognize his hipster status, so it's less annoying. Don't call him Ed and do the readings and you will be fine. He will stand on his desk at some point (apparently he always does). Loved him and would take him again.
Thought-provoking class discussions & readings. In order to excel in class, proper planning, regular office hrs. & writing center appts. are essential. Dr. Comstock motivates his students to evoke critical thinking by juxtaposing different perspectives & analyzing situations objectively, but w/ logic & reason. You will be empowered! Good investment.
He is a harsh grader and requires a very high level of work. He often talks in circles and does not provide useful, concrete feedback. His assignments are confusing, and he changes them often.
Definitely takes a little while to warm up to him. But I promise you he is worth taking. Assigns a lot of work, but every assignment serves its purpose, and he genuinely wants you to do well. Very knowledgeable and super chill in office hours.
Your stereotypical hipster professor - great fashion, chill guy, and totally develops you into a great writer. His work load is a little high (if you want a good grade) as all college writing Profs are, but do your work, and you'll go far. He has made me such a better writer and I deeply enjoy his personality. Watch out for a lot of sociology tho!
Professor Comstock is great! His comments to papers help a lot. He seems genuinely interested in improving his students' writing. He definitely improved mine! The course was a little boring at times, but we did some pretty good readings. Papers were hard, but I learnt a lot in the process. Comstock has a great sense of humor! He is a great guy :)
Really hard. You will not get an A. Have to do the reading to survive. Confusing assignments, but good in office hours. I did improve my writing, but this class almost killed me.
Great prof. Loved him.
A passionate and great teacher.
If you have any questions his office hours are always OPEN! He will literally walk you step by step through the assignment and through your paper on things to change and improve on! NO EXAMS! 3 PAPERS TOTAL! A lot of reading but, as long as you skim you can get your participation and seem like you're actually doing the readings.
Comstock is seriously a great professor and even a greater person. Although I didn't put a 100% effort into the class due to my immense course load, he understood my effort and gave me the grade he knew I deserved. He teaches you how to write well, is funny, is intelligent and is attractive. I sort of a have a small professor crush on him,
I didn't like him at first, but he ended up being a great professor. He really helps students improve their writing. Assignments can be confusing on what he expects, but he will clarify if you ask.
Funny, passionate, intelligent, and totally looks like Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother! Big time professor crush.
It's impossible to walk out of this class without becoming a better writer, no matter your current abilities. He was also the fastest, most helpful grader among all my professors. I wish he would teach higher level courses so that I could have him again.
Good teacher, cares a lot, but has challenging assignments.
Enthusiastic, he loves writing. He definitely made my writing better over the course of the semester, teaching me different ways in order to make my sentences betters. Gives multiple chances for revision, as first grades are tough. Work lets up towards the end of the semester, which is a nice change. Overall great prof and a nice guy. No final!
He's definitely a perfectly nice guy. He gives a lot of small, inane assignments that are hard to keep track of if you're not careful, but the major papers are simple enough and he seems to grade fairly-though I don't feel like I learned all that much. Rent the books, because they're expensive and the bookstore won't buy them back.
I LOVE PROF COMSTOCK HE MADE ME FALL IN LOVE WITH WRITING !!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO TAKE HIS CLASS!
You will learn more in this class than you probably have any ever english course you have taken thus far in life - truly makes you rethink the way writing should be handled. Favorite class I have ever taken in college. You will have to work hard for a good grade but it's so worth it. An actually educational AND fun course.
I would highly recommend Comstock, participation is a must but the more engaged you are (which isnt hard to do in his class bc he is really engaging and keeps it interesting) the easier the class is. He gives great feedback and is an amazing person
Just do the reading and your all good
Professor Comstock was intimidating at first, but he actually turned out to be one of my favorite teachers. He's a hard grader, but improves your writing so much. My advice is read everything (including directions), and absolutely go see him outside of class. He provides helpful feedback and is great to talk to! Really cares about his students.
Professor Comstock can be a tough grader, but he did improve my writing. He is funny and is genuinely interested in teaching. Buy the books, come to class, participate, do your homework, have fun.
different style of teaching. lots of tough readings and group work. very laid back and chill class, but there are a few papers that he grades tough. gives unclear instructions and feedback, rarely posts grades. I eneded with a 92.7 in the class and he would not round up to an A (93). expectations unclear in syllabus.
Prof Comstock inspired me to be a writer, hes such a hip young professor but truly cares about his students and his work. He wants to see students grow he will push you to become an amazing writer, I wouldnt take anyone else. TAKE HIM.
Professor Comstock is a cool guy. If you're on the fence about whether or not to take him, I would say take him. His feedback for work is odd and hard to understand, but I did feel like I learned a lot from him.
Really cared about students and participation. Definitely do the readings and go to office hours.
extremely tough grading on things he was unclear about. Does not put any grades into blackboard at all. Countless amounts of busy work that does not help much. the topic of the class (object lessons) was honestly stupid, it didn't make me a better writer or help in any way.
Comstock is probably the most energetic professor I've ever had. He's so passionate about writing and never lets you forget it. I always looked forward to this class and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone taking 106. If you put in the work, you'll do well!
He was alright. You have to put a lot of work into his class and I think the work was honestly just busy work. There are three major assignments. The first he gave us barely any instructions and then gave back a a page full of critiques for each person in the class. Then we did an annotated bb which is so middle school. This class was honestly bad
I loved this class and it completely changed how I think about writing. Prof. Comstock is brilliant and I even looked forward to the online classes because of covid. You can tell he cares a ton. Amazing!!
Not a very challenging professor, in any way, but a great guy and very understanding. He encourages quality over quantity and gives really good feedback. He is also very flexible, accessible, and lighthearted. If you want a pretty easy, chill class to get a requirement done, I would definitely recommend Comstock.
I like Prof. Comstock as a person but his class was not very structured and sometimes his assignments did not have clear instruction. He is passionate about his job, which I do respect. Good person but maybe not the best teacher for me
Professor Comstock is probably the most enthusiastic professor I've ever had. He's very confusing and vague about what he wants, and this class was labor based and he strictly adhered to that.
Take Professor Comstocks class! He is so knowledgeable about writing, passionate about teaching, and really cares about the improvement of his students. Some of his assignments were a little confusing, but he is always open for office hours and for questions to address your concerns. Overall a great Professor if you work hard you will be rewarded
I had Comstock for Lincoln Scholars. He's smart, and gives good lectures. My only real issue with the course was his anti-racist grading criteria. In theory it graded on effort rather than output, but in reality, it was extremely confusing. Until the last week of the semester I only had one posted grade, which was very stressful.
Prof Comstock was really nice and understanding. Part of his philosophy as a teacher is that he does not have all of the right answers and you should not cater your writing towards what you think will get the best grade, which is super cool and allows you to learn, but also leads to very unclear grading criteria and not much feedback on your work.
Anybody who rates Professor Comstock under a 5 doesn't know what they are talking about. I am a Junior and have taken various classes with him now and can say without a doubt that he is the very BEST that AU has to offer. This guy knows how to make you learn. It may seem like a lot of work but they're all interesting assignments. Take his class.
I respect Professor Comstock very much. I though he was very well versed in his area of expertise, and it's clear that he cares very much about the success of his students. My only critique is that for a 100-level writing class, albeit an intensive writing class, the work can be very challenging.
Impossible essays, relatively easy grader. Didn't understand a thing, got an A-. Interesting guy but again, impossible to understand. The work you do in his classes will be more rewarding, (assumedly) easier graded, but much harder. Some chances to increase grade.
Labor based grading is not helpful. Only three major projects, but did not feel prepped for college writing at all.
Dr. Comstock is overqualified to teach WRT106. I really appreciate his passion and he's a very intelligent guy. With that being said, he delves very deeply into the metaphysics of writing and it's... a lot. It's interesting but very very complicated. Combined with his EXTREMELY confusing/demanding grading system, the class can be overwhelming
He uses a labor-based grading system that is confusing and requires an insane amount of additional labor outside of class. His content is confusing, and sometimes sitting through class is difficult. His attendance policy is so strict that I felt pressure to attend class through a family emergency.
I did not learn anything in this class, and many assignments felt like a joke. He was nice, but sometimes copied and pasted feedback for different students. Professor Comstock tried, but I felt it was such a waste of time and money. Some assignments had challenging demands, but he did not explain or teach them well. Labor based grade is annoying.
I took him last semester and it was my favorite class! Dr. Comstock gives tons of useful feedback and shows you the problem with how I learned to write in high school. Some students were nervous about his grade system because it was new to them but it's easier to get a good grade and by the end of the semester I understood it is anti-racism.
Took him freshman year for Writing. Great dude, interesting course, and interesting readings. The readings can be a little out there, but you will learn a lot about rhetoric and writing. Take his class.
Dr. Edward J. Comstock is the greatest professor I've had so far at American University. His lectures are genuinely fascinating, and he does a great job of explaining complex theoretical concepts in a way that makes sense. If doing so works with your class schedule, I highly recommend taking a course with this professor.
Personally I didn't enjoy most of the assignments, but I still became a better writer after taking this class. The labor based grading system is kind of annoying at first but it makes sense why he uses it. Comstock is accessible and incredibly caring outside of class.
Assignments are extremely confusing and you have to constantly check canvas. I appreciate the philosophy behind his labor based grading but it often prevents flexibility for students. Unhelpful and rude when students have an emergency. He has good intentions but is unyielding and confusing more times than not. I do not recommend this class at all.
Professor Comstock is definitely a character but he cares a lot about his students and does labor based grading, so you're basically guaranteed an A if you want one. Overall, I would recommend if you can deal with a little weirdness
Easy class and a funny guy. The class is labor based so as long as you do the work, you're bound to get an A.
He's lit
Really strange guy and was kind of a hypocrite about writing. Did not like him but the class was not awful.
At first the class was confusing because I think he struggled with canvas so it was hard to understand what was and wasn't due but now he has it down. He is very passionate about the inquiries you will be taught about and I have never taken a class before where I actually felt like I came out the other end with a whole knew understanding. Worth it.
The class is labor based, so as long as you do the work you get a high grade. Prof Comstock is a little awkward but kind and cares about writing and teaching. I felt like my writing improved in this class.
Kind and very passionate professor, but I just did not like the class. My writing definitely improved from the labor-based structure, but the assignments always felt extremely tedious in the moment. I often zoned out in class, but his lectures were heartfelt. I can see plenty of students benefitting from his teaching and his thorough feedback.
Does labor-based grading... EW!!! Completely disorganized, but is generous enough to give kids a second chance.
I took his class which was gradeless which had its pros and cons. Professor Comstock, however, is very personable and very passionate about writing. At times his class had a very unclear lesson plan and was a bit all over the place, but his creativity in learning styles made up for it for sure.
Prof Comstock is eccentric. His guidelines are often unclear and difficult to follow. Very passionate about writing, very knowledgeable and pretty helpful. You'll definitely become a better writer, even if its kind of a headache at times. Labor based has pros and cons but I think I enjoyed. Def take if you love writing
Professor Comstock essentially goes on a wild rant in his own little world for an hour every class. Super easy A because of the labour based grading, but still a little insufferable to sit through class. 106 is a useless class anyways so I would take his section for the A anyways, but just beware.
He is very passionate and gives very good feedback. The class is labor based.
comstock is really understanding and accommodating, and the class is labor based so if you do the work you get an a. such a strange class and guy though. it's not like actual science at all--mostly philosophy and him trying to connect things that don't really connect with made up metaphors. felt like a fever dream, but good class bonding for sure.
Great guy, definitely taught me a lot about writing and I always had fun in class. Labor based grading is not something I agree with or would like to experience again, but he made up for it with really creative and fun assignments.
Functionally, every assignment is completion graded. There are one-three written assignments every week, in just about every possible writing style. I learned a LOT about writing in this class and it helped me to be able to write college-length essays. I definitely wrote a lot of three-hour-three-page essays for him, but he's nice and I learned.
He was an okay professor, but I did not like how he viewed grades. He told our class that the highest grade you could get without doing extra credit was a B, and each extra credit assignment would bump your grade up by half a grade.
Comstock cares deeply about what he is teaching, but his enthusiasm is lost on students taking a required class they are not interested in. All work is graded for completion, and you get an automatic A if you do the extra labor assignments. I dreaded going to class (so boring), but worth taking for a break from more difficult classes/assignments.
Makes class a bit overly complicated but very passionate about what he teaches. Responds to emails pretty quickly and the work is pretty easy since it's labor based. He gives good feedback. Lectures feel super unnecessary and he kinda just talks to himself most of the time but he's a good guy.
Effort-based grading, so do all the assignments and you get an easy A. Decent amount of work but Comstock is very flexible with prompt interpretation. Gives great feedback because he doesn't need to give a grade. Readings are conceptually interesting about how we think about travel and tourism. Incredible choice for completing HOM requirement.
