He is a very unorganize teacher. He lectures too fast so you have to slow him down a bit. He is a very smart teacher if you ask him anything he will know the answer. Make sure you pay attention in class for the exam beccause anything and everything will be one it.
Great teacher. He does everything with power point and gives you power point handouts to follow along with. he gives extra credit. He is extremely helpful. Just make sure you pay attention to every lecture or your screwed. Easy A.
I disliked his teaching styles. He graded unfairly.
He knows a lot about what he is teaching and he has genuine interest in it. Lecture is very interesting and he posts his powerpoint on his website so that you can print them and bring them to class. Overall a great instructor as long as you are in class and attentive you should do fine.
I have to admit. He does know a lot but his test were extremely hard. I took him for the first term of BI 231 but it wasn't that hard. Now he made the test extra hard. I saw some students were taking their whole period on their test. He is hard but at the same time he knows so much that it scary.
gREAT GUY very helpful always trying to make students succeed
Degrauw is one of those teachers who just gets it. He realizes that this is a 'jump through the hoops' class, and he does everything he can to help you. Yes, he is a hard tester, however if you dont do well on his tests its your fault for not going to him for help. Ive never seen a teacher more willing to go COMPLETELY out of their way to help!
I would love to take my 233 with Ed, but alas he's not teaching it until next spring. He's an extremly helpful teacher and goes out of his way to help the students who want help. He does have hard tests, but he likes challenging his students. Isn't that what your here for???
He uses a slideshow off his computer to lecture. It helps, but not everything makes it into the slideshow. Make sure you read and there shouldnt be any problems!
Great Teacher!!! you will love him. Not many techers like him as far as make this hard class an esear.
he makes a difficult class interesting and kind of fun. his lectures do go way too fast, so make sure you learn most things on your own before coming to class
Ed is a great teacher who knows what hes talking about. his tests arent entirely easy , but if you go to the study sessions and take notes and work hard at it, you can succeed. He also offers extra credit and is willing to help his students in any way.
Great prof. really good at making you understand and works very hard at helping you do well. You do have to apply yourself. Anatomy is one of the hardest class you will ever take.
He is probably the greatest teacher i have ever had. Makes class fun and interesting. Wants you to do well. I would recomend Ed to anyone.
He is the best
Dr. DeGrauw is excited about what he teaches, and one can tell he knows a lot! His lectures are intense (as is A&P) but he allows enough time and explaination for the information to soak in. I recommend reading the slides ahead of time, and take advantage of extra credit. Great teacher, great lectures, even if it's a hard class.
Ed really loves what he teaches and it comes across in his lectures. He is great at what he does and really wants his students to succeed. I have really enjoyed having him for a year of A & P.
He is very intelligent. He shares his intelligence well. Ed is very enthusiastic. One of the best teachers I've ever had.
lectures with ease, lives his subject, inspires the class. Tests are based on his lecture notes (you can print them before each class and there is a space to make your own comments).
Very poor teacher
Had him for 231 and 232. GREAT TEACHER!!! He is so helpfull. He will meet with you anytime and help you the most he can to succeed. He is very knowledgable. He is hard, but any A & P class with be hard, at least with ED you get a great teacher for a hard class.
He is the best! He lets you know what to expect on tests, and he tells it like it is.
Ed is a great teacher! He has a way of making learning about the body fun. Hard class, but great teacher!
best biology teacher ever!!!
He is a very good teacher but his class darn hard.
Best AP teacher for sure. No joke. Lots of Xtra credit opportunities. No other teacher does that. He is the coolest.
Probably one of the hardest class that I ever took. Although his class is very hard, he is a great teacher. One of the easiest teachers that you can talk to. A&p is overal very hard, but if you are sure that this is the class that you what to take, then take it with him.
I took him for all Anatomy classes and he was clear, professional, and always keeps your interests. A great sense of humor and explains things again if you ask him. Very fast paced but if you go to class and study you should have no trouble keeping up.
AMAZING TEACHER! He is VERY knowlegable in the subject and very interesting to listen to. He is extremely helpful and always willing to meet if you have any questions.
Ed's the man! He makes such a hard subject like a&p interesting and fun to learn. very good at what he does!
always helpful and willing to explain anything you don't understand
Very fast paced and difficult to work with. Struggled to get a B. Take Larry Sanders for much better appreciation of an instructor. Larry is thorough and easy to understand.
He teaches some hard material, but he really makes it a fun class.
the best teacher in my 4 yr. college career! Ed is an amazing and competant mentor through the world of A&P. You have to work hard, but there is no limit to how much you can learn from this man. He is funny and the most talented educator I have met so far. He does his homework and expects you to as well.
Very hard, need to study a lot.
Looking over the many comments posted I chuckled at the negative ones. It seems that there are still people that don't do their homework and or want the easy way out. Ed is a gem. Yes, he covers material in a whirlwind, but he often repeats the stuff you "need" to know. Lectures are entertaining. Grading is fair. YOU have to do the work!
the nicest teacher and the most helpful
Ed is by far the best teacher i have ever had. The information is tough, but not ed's grading of it. if you put in the time you will get the grade you want. he is always available to help. you would be stupid to take this class from anyone else. he is the best there is as far as A&P goes.
Nice enough, sort of goofy, tests are fair and cover topics on his study guide. Not an "easy" professor, but certainly interesting and do-able enough to make a B or better in this class. Gives lots of opps for extra credit. Attendance is not mandatory, but being there will only help you do well in this class.
The best teacher I've ever had. Very funny, makes class fun. Fairly diffucult.
His lectures are easy to sit through.... Ed is very funny, but his tests are hard... once you take the first test you will know how to study for the next. He is a great teacher
OH my goodness this professor is wonderful! Honestly the best I've ever had. I believe only people who fail to do the work leave negative remarks: Ed IS extremely fair, knowledgeable and helpful. His tests are VERY FAIR! He'll go the extra mile for you if you do the work. Ed explains everything better than the text-he's an overall GREAT professor!
Ed is a really great teacher, he is passionate about the material and makes class interesting. If possible read the material before class as he can go a little too fast at times.
Wonderful teacher!!
With Ed there is never an excuse to not do well in his class, he is always available to talk to and is more than fair on his tests
Ed is an amazing professor. He is so passionate about the material and he is really an amazing teacher. He really connects with his classes and will do all that he can to make sure that you succeed. Truly one of the best profs I have ever had! Be ready to work and learn and push yourself, but you won't be sorry.
The semester was rushed due to bad weather/canceled class, but he got the basics covered. Didn't really learn anything too in-depth, though--glad I'm not going to nursing school! Interesting style of lecture. I only needed about 7hrs/wk study time, he recommends 20/wk! Taking him again for 3rd quarter.
Ed is a fair teacher. The test are tough but he gives you plenty of chances for extra credit. You can't pass this class without getting into his brain. On a test he will force you to analyze and work out scenerios fit for the ER. He knows his stuff though so at least you feel confident in what you are being taught, sometimes different from text.
I dropped Ed's class after he made a condescending comment when I asked him to explain something in more detail. Take Jonathan Christie's A&P class @ the Cascade campus. I THANK God every day I made the change. Jonathan absolutely loves teaching A&P, and his clinical, diagnostic approach to the subject prepares you for Nursing school. Take him!!
Very hard teacher and makes the subject harder than it has to be. You will do well if you are one of his "chosen" few and he will even let those come in separately for tests and help them. I do not believe I would have done well in this class if it were not for my lab teachers.
Teaches a huge class at PSU as P-time prof and full time at PCC. It is a wonder how he is able to make time for all of his students, but he does.
Ed is the best teacher I'v ever had. You will get out of the class what you put in. Everything you need to know he covers in lecture. He is fair and available anytime to help anyone who wants it. He knows his stuff. Getting an A is very doable. I highly recommend him.
I think he is an amazing teacher. p.s. He's sexy too!
I love ed!!! He make class fun and truly cares about his class. I have had class with him before and we have maintaind a friendship for a couple years. He is always there even if you don't have a class with him. He has an open door policy. Great Teacher!
Ed is such a wonderful prrofessor. His exams are tough, but that is what this subject is.... tough. I learned so much from this class... you really have to study as you would in anyone's A&P class. He makes this class exciting and adds jokes to his lectures to make them fun! He makes time for ALL of his students, some just don't talk in class or t
Awesome! His class is exciting and he makes jokes in lecture to make them fun He makes time for ALL of his students some just don't talk in class or to him at all and think they're not the "chosen" ones rediculous He is very fair and easy to talk to. You have to study 20 hours a week you're going into the healthcare field you SHOULD know this stuff
Ed, Is the BEST of the BEST! Anyone who says different is just mad because they are too stupid to understand the topic and are looking for an excuse! I had him for and year with 231,232,233. And got all A's, because I studied a least 2-3 hours a day. Go to class, listen and study and you will too!
I absolutely loved class with Ed! Before you know it 2 hours it up and class is over. You'll have to figure out how much you need to study. I would re-listen to each of the lectures and take notes again. Then I'd review my notes before the test for 7-8 hours over a couple days. Don't read book unless you feel like you don't understand big pictur
This guy is energetic, really knows what he is teaching plus more and makes his classes fun. He will go out of his way to make sure you understand and will work around your schedule for review. Tests are based on lectures and power points. Record the lectures and listen to them before tests and review the power points and you will get an A!
Ed is an excellent and enthusiastic teacher. He made this course feel more like an academic vacation than a regular class. The field trip to S/E Oregon was very fun.
BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! This is the hardest class I have ever taken. He makes Anatomy understandable and less scary.
I had Ed for all 3 A&P classes about 2 years ago. Im almost done with a 2 year medical program at PCC and will graduate in 2 months. Ed's class really got me ready for a very challenging program and not one instructor in the program was half as good as him. Enjoy your time with the BEST instructor at PCC and pay attention! He is a wealth of knowled
I highly recommend taking A&P with Ed. He's a goldmine of information and his door is always open. He makes the information easier to understand by relating concepts with real life situations. 2 midterms + final in lecture that are multiple choice. 5 quizes in lab and 2 tests. Study and ask for help when you don't understand a concept.
Like Ed needs any more praise - but I have to continue the trend. I took Ed for the entire A&P series and really enjoyed it. However, I really don't like his tests. It almost made me leave after the first term - even though I was getting A's, I felt like I was being tricked, and I hate that. BUT he's super smart and class is fun.
Absolutly the best professor I have ever had! Yes his test are hard but you can get and A because Ed is always open to helping you, always! He answers pretty much any question, and will go out of his way to make sure you understand. He really cares about his students. I just can't being to express how amazing he is!
To many tangents about peoples personal lives and not enough teaching.
tests are too hard!! Nice man, approachable, funny. hard tests! would not recommend this instructor for that reason.
Ed's class could be a model for A&P programs at other schools. He's a very busy man but goes go out of his way to help students. This class is a LOT of work so there's no easy A's, but if you approach it with the right attitude and sufficient time commitment you will do well. Don't cheat yourself by taking an "easier" teacher.
Ed is one of the best proffessors I've had. He is very knowledgeable and entergetic. He is always avaliable to answer any questions. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His test are hard but they get you thinking!
Ed is the man! Super passionate about the subject and a very interesting class. Takes some work, but he's worth it!
Ed really is a great instructor. I agree that you do need to attend lecture. However, he does post his lectures and he offers review sessions before each test. They are quite helpful. I honestly don't think it should be an easy course or series for that matter. We're all going into a medical or science field and we have to know our stuff.
Awesome teacher! Yes, he is hard but tells you what you need to know & not know for each test. Offers prep sessions before tests, gives extra credit...lots of opportunities and is all around a fun teacher. We laugh and joke in class and 1.5 hours goes by in what feels like 30 minutes. The info is exicting and the teacher is easy on the eyes.
OK! so this class is very hard, as in there is lots of material to cover but Ed is amazing at making everything clear and easy to understand! I would totally recommend him for A&P!
I completely disagree with the last comment. Perhaps this student didn't do well in class .... Ed is not arrogant or a condescending jerk !!!! .... He sets the example of how an instructor should conduct classes ... :)
For starters, A&P is going to be hard from any teacher you take it from, and if it's not hard then the teacher isn't teaching you anything. In this class there is a lot of material to cover and Ed does a good job of making sure you understand it all in the short amount of time there is. I would highly recommend Ed if you really want to learn A&P.
If you're serious about a career in the Health field, take Ed. He's knows his stuff. He tries to relate the subject to things we can relate to. Some people may find this annoying. I found it helped me remember the content. i will take Ed again.
Great Professor. Provides extra credit opportunities, which is rare for bio professors. A little cocky, but he has the knowledge to back it. Returns email right away, available after class. Grades on a curve.
Great Professor. Provides extra credit opportunities, which is rare for bio professors. A little cocky, but he has the knowledge to back it. Returns email right away, available after class. Grades on a curve.
Best prof I've had. I'm in nursing school now at U of Portland and Ed's voice still keeps ringing in my ears. Since everyone else says the same true things of Ed, I'll say this: He knows what you need to know if you're going to be a health professional! You'll be thinking like one by the time you finish, and he stays up to date on what's relevant.
Ed is among the most engaging lecturers I've heard but far from the best TEACHER I've ever had. Don't have time to meet outside of class? Probably not the prof for you. When you finally figure out how to study for his tests he will purposefully change his style. Super frustrating. Something is wrong when 30 out of 50=an A on the curve.
Best teacher ever!If you are serious in going further in health care, take Ed. He will get you ready for anything. Hard yes, very hard, but you will pass if you study. Dont know why previous person says he doesnt have time outside of class, I certainly talked to him outside of class and he was very helpful. He does everything to help his students!
Ed is a very talented lecturer and makes everything interesting to learn about. But, still read the text and review your notes for a good grade.
The material is hard no matter which teacher you have. This teacher is kind, funny, engaging, and can hold your attention through a 2.5 hr lecture. Grades on a curve and he subbed in for our lab and was a bajillion times better lab teacher than the one I had. Fantastic teacher.
Ed ROCKS .... :-)
Ed is not easy, but you are taking A&P for a program that will not be easy. He will prepare you to do the kind of work you need to be able to do to succeed. He is incredibly knowledgeable and the best kind of professor. Expect to be put on the spot, but he is doing it to make you better.
I studied 20 hours every week for this class. I am almost a straight A student and I got a C in this class. He likes trick questions for his tests, and often they got me confused about what was actually being asked. Tests should be difficult, not confusing! If he knows your name he WILL call you out in the middle of lecture to answer his questions.
Ed is a very interesting lecturer and will not read directly from his own powerpoint slides, and he supplies print copies, mp3's and integrity recordings which are all very helpful. Also, if he asks a question to someone in the class, continue thinking about it, cuz chances are he will call on you NEXT.
He grades on a curve which is a major help because his tests are super hard. Average for one of our exams is generally 30/50 if this gives you an idea on how the tests go.
Best prof I've ever had by far. His tests will definitely stretch you, but it's worth it. If you're pre-nursing, pre-med, etc... then TAKE ED. He will prepare you for your programs and will spend lots of time with you if you have questions about nursing/medical schools around the country. Very knowledgable.
The good: grades on a curve, gives lots of extra credit. The bad: tests are CRAZY hard. Guy's also obsessed with chemistry (chem not required to take A and P) so it's hard to follow if no chem background. If you have to take him, record all lectures, go over everything several times, and study like crazy. A's are hard to get, but within reach.
His examples usually help to accentuate a point from his lecture, but make sure not to get lost in the small details, make sure you understand the big picture and how everything fits together. Also, I highly, highly recommend going to any of the AM review sessions as possible. THey are at 6 am, be there if you want an A!
He is fun to TRY to learn from... But he is more impressed with his own knowledge than trying to teach others. His tests are purposefully too hard for you to get a passing grade without the curve. This seems like more of an ego boost for him than a learning experience.
This teacher is really fun! I don't want to discourage people from taking his class but you really need to realize just how much work he expects from you. I HIGHLY recommend studying for your tests the first day of class. He is very funny and has great stories as well.
A&P is difficult from any teacher based on the sheer amount of material. Ed is excellent at tying the material into real word examples that everyone can relate to and makes it VERY interesting. He's a great prof. I listen to the recordings and easily get a 90% on tests(with curve) Book is helpful but not necessary.Lab before lecture is helpful too.
Ed really wants you to get an A, offers 4% extra credit, and is available for office hours. He also records lectures. His powerpoints are not concise or organized with lots of repeated + outdated info. If he edited his slides to go with his presentation instead of regurgitating the same spiel then he would be a much more effective lecturer.
This professor is nice and funny enough, but he seems to be a narcissist who spends a lot of time stroking his ego. Love him or hate him for it, he writes his exams so that the class average is about 65% before the curve. I agree with the commenter who said Dr. D likes to use confusing questions. Choose him if you enjoy that kind of thing.
Taking Ed's class was torture. The entire term is a struggle. In fact, the entire series of anatomy with Degrauw is just completely and ridiculously terrible. His class is a horrible experience. He expects too much and his exams are too difficult. Ed is rude and egotistical and it is extremely difficult to get an A. This class will lower your GPA.
Ed is awesome. His class is very hard but if you study getting an A is possible. He has all of his lecture slides along with recordings online for your individual class. You will also never have to read the book. He also makes lecture really funny/interesting by telling stories.Ed may not be the easier teacher but he is the best.Dont take anyone else
Ed is awesome! He is brilliant, funny, encouraging, and motivating. His tests are a work of art, and his grading system allows you to not do great on tests but to learn what you missed by redoing them for a few extra points. He isn't for everyone, i.e. lazy people who just want an A. He'll make you work for it but in the end you're smarter for it.
Ed's class is difficult. No doubt about it. However, this class prepared me for grad school more than any other undergrad class I took, based on expectations and testing style/methodology. If you are struggling - the best thing you can do is go talk with him directly.
Ed is great. One of the best instructors I have ever had (I have multiple undergrad & grad degrees). He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed, which is why his tests are so hard. He really tries to prepare students for success in their future programs. Listen to his lectures, use the ppts, and talk to him and you can succeed.
Ed always takes time to answer questions and has an obvious love of his subject. makes himself available out of class and doesnt make you feel dumb when you are unable to grasp a concept. This class is no joke in workload: STUDY! tests are practice critical thinking tests; be prepared to think rather than spit up facts. grades on curve
Ed is an excellent professor. He gives examples that are relevant & makes jokes to help you remember things. He is willing to repeat things until you understand it. If you utilize his help, he goes above & beyond to help you to do the best you can do in his course. His tests only cover what he covers in lecture so use the book as a reference.
My experience was DeGrauw makes learning A&P harder than it has to be. Not enough attention to basic structure & function. Way too much focus on MICRObiology and PATHOphysiology. I earned an A only by relying on the text (which DeG discourages use of) and a good Lab Instructor (Richardson). Enthusiastic, but NOT recommended.
Ed is amazing with a love of A&P. His followers are VERY true to him and I recommend him to anyone I can. I have taken the entire series from him and this term I have really missed Ed! Yes, he is difficult; however, he WILL prepare you for any health field you are going into. If you are taking A&P at PCC or PSU, TAKE IT FROM ED. I promise.
Ed is a great teacher. Comes across as a jerk sometimes in class, but very helpful in person. Cares about the students and their success. Teaches from powerpoint. Tests are VERY difficult. Makes recordings of his lectures available (if you buy the subscription service with the text). Study harder for this class than you've ever studied before.
If you're trying to decide what professor to take for A&P at PCC then STOP what you're doing & register for Ed's class. I promise, you won't be disappointed. Yes, Ed is hard but he will prepare you for future medical ventures like you can't imagine! He cares about his students & will answer any question. All in all, an OUTSTANDING professor.
Ed is the best! Completely helpful and extended himself in office hours beyond required!!!
I couldn't believe how much DeGrauw was helpful with office hours. If you ask for help and study, he is willing to do A LOT to help you.
Ed ROCKS! Best instructor I have EVER had at PCC!!!!!
Absurdly hard tests with numerous trick questions in an attempt to obfuscate, straightforward questions are a rarity. You will be required to know everything, and know how concepts could interact with one another without ever having addressed such an interaction in class or provided materials.
Ed is GREAT! He is one of the best teachers I've ever had, and I've learned more from his A&P class than I have from any other biology teacher. Having said that, this is also the hardest class (in terms of material) that I've ever taken in my life. This is a class for students dedicated to learning about biology, and Ed's the guy to learn it from.
I'll be honest and say I wasn't a fan of Ed in the beginning of first term A&P but I soon realized that he was one of the greatest teachers out there. His tests are hard and you have to find a way of studying that benefits you but Ed pushes you to prepare yourself for whatever programs await you in the future. Fantastic teacher!
Sign up for Ed's class. Now. Best lectures of any class I've taken. Tests are tough but curved and he'll go out of his way to help you learn. Ed treats students like they are smart and pushes you to do your best.
Ed is the best teacher I have ever had. Hard class. But he is very understanding. Take the time to go pick his brain he is BRILLIANT. He makes the class fun and entertaining. Prepare to laugh, learn, and say goodbye to your social life! I took his class and got 100 on the anatomy portion of the nursing exam to get into school! Very helpful
Took full A&P series. Not for the faint of heart. This is a high level series that is very demanding. Ed prepares you very well, whether you like his methods or not. Teaches same class at same level at PSU. Totally worth it if you want to truly be prepared for healthcare. There is a REASON it is so hard.
Tests are hard, know material 100%. Lectures are sometimes off topic
I think Ed is brilliant, but I had a very hard time actually LEARNING the material via lecture. He goes over a solid 4 or 5 ppt slides vocally and then skips through the ones he feels that he has already talked about. If you are a visual learner, I HIGHLY rec. reading the chapters prior to lectures, then listening to recordings after! He curves!
Ed is a very dynamic lecturer, I'll give him that. But I felt like his tests were way too difficult. The purpose of testing is to help students learn, not to trick them and give them an F (killing any motivation whatsoever). Half the class dropped out by the end of the term. Also, his grading criteria was so unclear. Avoid like the plague.
Ed's exams are pretty difficult, he does grade based on a curve, which is a pretty big curve. There's a lot to know, and he goes over it pretty fast, but he helps you understand. Now if only, I could get a better lab professor.
Ed Degrauw is an absolutely amazing, passionate and funny biology professor. Any student who does poorly in his class was a result of a lack of studying. Tests are difficult yes, but his curve is very generous. Ed is an expert at making dry anatomy colorful. I laugh at least 3 times a class. I have learned more then student's of other professors.
Ed was one of the best teaches I have ever taken. His material is very difficult but the way he explains it makes it easy to understand. the lectures are recorded too for added help. His curve can either help you or hurt you. I will be taking him for 232
His tests are hard but he wants you to be able to use critical thinking. He is funny and is passionate about what he teaches. Really makes a dry subject entertaining. He grades on a curve. If you do not get a good grade in his class it is from a lack of studying. He likes participation in class.
Ed is an excellent teacher. He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches and really wants to prepare his students for the careers they are going into. It's a hard class but Ed makes it enjoyable and is a very reasonable teacher. He also gives opportunities for extra credit outside of class. I know that I will be well prepared for nursing school!
His lectures are really entertaining, and he will pick people out of the lecture to answer questions. He also records all of his lectures, but the sound quality isnt great. Tests are really difficult, but he curves them very generously. Takes the time to give specialized advising after class for nursing, physical therapy, etc.
Although I got a B (not good enough), I have no idea whether I learned appropriately in this class. I felt like I was failing the entire time because you have no idea what the curve will end up being. If so much is knocked off in the curve, what is the point? If Biology isn't your forte, if you're not a great test taker, RUN. RUN anywhere else.
I'm a successful Registered Nurse who knows his stuff, thanks in huge part to this gentleman. He's entertaining, knowledgeable about the material, and tough, which means students who run the gauntlet see themselves at the other end prepared for the rigors of nursing school or other health programs.
Don't take Ed unless you're serious about these classes. His tests are tough, and grading is wonky, but his lectures are very informative and dare I say, fun. He is a wealth of information, and an interesting character. Go to his office hours, and don't be afraid to ask all the questions. it's your education, get your money's worth.
This dude was always running around trying to do as much as humanly possible while talking to students and being as helpful as possible. Hard working, excellent lectures, clear instructions on how to study and be prepared for the tests. Sensitive to student's learning needs, he clearly puts effort into organizing the material so it can be absorbed.
The only students who should take Ed are the ones taking adderall or other stimulants. Absolutely no amount/method of studying prepares you for his exams. He grades on a curve and his average class exam score is always an F. He tests on things he never lectured on, so most of the class relies on the curve. Take only for knowledge, not for an A.
If you want an instructor who grades and tests realistically, dont take Ed. Dont let the other reviews fool you. He makes his exams exceptionally hard to weed out students who arent good enough for nursing school. If you want to pass A&P with your self worth intact, look elsewhere. His exams are full of trick questions, so be prepared.
Caring professor who gives 150% to make sure that you understand wicked hard material, particularly the organic chemistry. Trustworthy in that he's not going to leave you hanging, he'll work with you in every way to make sure that you know the material.
He is extremely caring and exponentially smart. Hes personable, makes biology fun, and is understanding. I went through an emotional issue and he worked with me and helped me utilize PCC resources for counseling. His lectures are entertaining and he offers extra credit. Though the class is hard, I cannot respect this man enough for all that he does
Although he may be smart with AP, when it comes to ethics and morals this guy is a nightmare. He made us all come in today for our final when the school was shutting down due to COVID-19. He fought tooth and nail to make us come in for this, putting everyone at risk. Claiming he wiped things down & didn't. While he joked about it, AWFUL!!!!!!!
This was my second time taking this section of A&P, the only saving grace was that he grades on a curve. first time through getting C's on tests (with no curve), had there not been a curve this time, F's. His tests are TOUGH and TRICKY. You WILL NOT PASS if you don't show up and study hard. So many people dropped this class. You've been warned.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Ed expects you to memorize everything he does not understand that we have a life because he only probably does A&P! He expects you to know everything and the tests are too hard and expects you to study outside of class for 60+ hours. Do not take this class unless you want to fail or have to withdraw.
It was an online class during pandemic. His recorded lectures are good to listen, however his test questions are out of nowhere. Average class grade F+, no curve. 5 quizzes, 20 questions each/1 minute per question, and final exam that cover all the material. He misspells words in test question to trick you, so you wont notice and fail it. RUN
I had no choice but to take 232 with Ed and boy was I disappointed. He fails to breakdown concepts and explain physiological processes in a way that is easy to learn. Tests would often have questions over things not covered in lecture and when brought up to him he was quick to dismiss u. refers to unborn babies as parasites which I was not a fan of
The best A&P Professor at PCC. Lectures are informative and interesting. Excellent explanation of material. The hardest quizzes and exams also. You must spend up to 50 hours per week studying in order to get A. No curve for online class. Take for knowledge. If you dont have such much time for studding, you wont pass. No extra credits.
Okay so I have to be honest I ran from this professor when I heard the horror stories, bit due to Covid, I got stuck with him for online lecture. I have to tell you, he's amazing. He explains the material extremely well and he's very helpful. He wants you to get this stuff. He's also very humorous. Always reminds you of your impending doom.
He cares a lot. Although the class is hard he puts a lot of effort into making sure students come out with an A. Can retake lab quizzes unlimited times and keep the highest grade. For the lecture quizzes that needs more studying because it is not unlimited, but after the attempt it is unlimited for practice for the final exam.
Ed is a great teacher for such a difficult course. A & P is the hardest series I've ever taken, but Ed broke it all down and made everything easier to understand. He's been at this for a long time, so he really knows his stuff. I also appreciate how he keeps up with modern knowledge because that is so important in the medical field. TAKE ED DEGRAUW
I took online BI 232 with Ed. Yes his tests are very hard, but if you study the lectures and attend Zoom meetings, you will be fine. He allows you to take weekly lab quizzes as many times as you want. I only lost points on lecture exam and final exam. He even helped me with questions about nursing school. Highly recommended.
Do not take Ed! Run! He makes it his goal to make you fail and brags about it. He will ask questions that werent covered in lecture or in the book. Horrible at emailing back. Expects you to study 50-60hrs/week. Some of his lecture quiz ?s dont even make sense and grammar is horrible. Take someone else if you can. I wont take him in 233.
ed is a true gem for students who truly are here to learn. you wont have lectures like his with any other prof. he knows his stuff, he loves to talk about it and he is a wealth of advising knowledge as well. helps you think clinically and challenges your knowledge on tests. quizzes can be retaken unlimited times. go to his nonmandatory class!
Ed is very knowledgeable, a passionate educator, and willing to help. However, I would not recommend his class. I enjoy learning and am willing to work hard, but working hard in his class is demoralizing and disorienting. The tests are full of tricks and material not covered in class. It leaves me unsure about what ive actually learned.
I signed up on this site just to leave this review. TAKE ED for A&P! If you can pass his class you can do anything. He really gives you tons of opportunities to do well and if you don't take advantage of them then maybe you aren't ready for the big leagues ( university or nursing school ). I left the A&P series feeling well prepared. '
Ed is very knowledgeable but when other instructors are asked questions about the test that he generated and they have to look up the answer, that's an obvious sign of how hard his exam and lecture quizzes are. The language he uses when describing anatomy can be offensive. If you don't show up to zoom you will not know what's on the tests.
I took BIO232 and BIO233 with Ed and I can say without a doubt it was the hardest class I took at PCC. However, I left feeling so prepared for my future in healthcare. If you want a future in healthcare you want to have as much knowledge as possible and that's exactly what Ed teaches. Prepare to work hard and be challenged but it will pay off.
Im a physician assistant who has been practicing for many years. I took Eds A&P series. His classes are really hard but they will prepare you for your professional programs. If you cant handle this class you likely wont do well in med school, PA school, nursing school etc.
I took Ed's A&P class back in 2014 at PSU. I'm now a board certified clinical pharmacist in a hospital. I cannot tell you how impactful his class was for my education and healthcare career. He demands a lot from you, but you leave understanding the material at such a high level. Highly recommend it for future healthcare workers.
Take this class ANYWHERE else. Just trust me. Not the best teacher. You basically teach yourself the material. I would meet with him every day to get help and I felt like a burden even though I was PAYING to take the class. Test heavy and the tests do not often reflect the material taught in class.
I really enjoyed this professor because he genuinely wanted everyone to get an A and didn't make things intentionally hard for the sake of it being a hard class. Quizzes can be taken twice. I didn't find the notes too helpful, but overall it was a good class. Labs were allowed to be taken unlimited times
Took Ed's A&P series in 2013(ish). This was one of the hardest, and most rewarding classes I ever took. I've been nursing for a little over 6 years now and still that class inspires me to learn more. This class will not only prepare you for future classes in the medical field, but it will help prepare you for your future practice.
If you want to be successful in your career because you actually know the information required for nursing or whatever program you're going into... Ed is the guy for the job. His classes are challenging but are rewarding and worth it. You'll be thanking him when you're the only one that passes your endocrine exam in the nursing program.
This guy is awesome! He will be patient with you and take his time to explain things so you can understand. He will be available in his personal time to advice you on anything you need help with if you ask him. He is a fantastic resource for questions related to RN programs and his lectures are awesome and informative.
I really enjoyed this class and I am happy I had professor Degrauw. If you are someone who needs repetition of material this is a good match/professor for you. He does not simply just go over the material but really breaks it down in a matter that makes sense. I highly suggest attending class even though attendance is not mandatory.
The BEST teacher! Ed doesn't just teach A&P, he teaches applied A&P. He related what we were learning to real patient scenarios driving us to really understand the topics. Anytime I had a question he knew the answer without hesitation. He is very passionate about A&P, his knowledge seems endless. If you want the best, take his class.
Ed Degrauw is one of those love-or-hate kind of professors. I never saw the appeal. If you like listening to the rantings and ramblings of a sarcastic old guy, go for it; but I found his lectures to be brash and offensive with more than a touch of narcissism and misogyny lurking under the surface.
Ed is helpful, smart and straight forward! He gives you resources such as prerecorded lectures which are amazing and informative to a degree that makes you love Anatomy and Physiology. By the time you are done with A and P taught by him you should feel prepared and competent to face nursing school or any other medical profession.
Ed is simply the best. & He is teaching the lab this term! I hope he will also host open lab. Ed's are not easy courses- but I I'd rather pass my boards, thank you. Ed will make sure you know the physiology, and that you will be ready to think analytically about very complex concepts. Take his class or you will regret it.
Amazingly interactive lectures. He really gets you thinking. Absolutely my favorite science teacher I have had in many years!
Ed has really engaging and fun lectures. He is a genuinely good person. Lectures are available to watch online if you want to get ahead in the class. The class is hard. Read the chapters in the book first for a broad scoop- Watch the lectures second for the information you will be quizzed on. Pay attention to all of what he covers in lecture.
Ed is amazing. The class is tough, so be prepared! But Ed truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Unfortunately, the lab portion is not taught by Ed. Prof. Slusher teaches lab, and a very large number of students dropped the class because they struggled to get help, feedback, or engagement from Prof. Slusher. Again: Ed is great.
This class in general is very difficult so it is up to you to study the content. He gives really good lectures and he always leaves a hanging sentence so that he makes you answer the question or at least attempt to, in order to make you remember all that important information. Lab is fairly easy. Lec. he has a question bank of approx. 100 Q's/quiz.
He grades super hard and makes you feel dumb if you don't answer a question correctly. I've never failed a class in my entire life and I think I'm on the verge so this just shows how he is. If you take him prepare to teach yourself plus he is very unapproachable.
Ed is an accessible genius. Do take advantage of his office hours and you will receive the best one'on-one advice on how to succeed in PA, PT, OT, or nursing programs
He takes pride in tricking his students and laughs at you when you ask questions. When you email him about stuff that will be on the lab practical he tells you one thing but does different. Has certain female students who follow him around like lemmings and hang out in his classroom afterhours. Loves to hear himself talk and is jaded about students
Ed is great! I took him for both BI232 and BI233. His lectures are entertaining and use real world examples to tie things in. Bonus, you have access to recorded lectures to help study outside of class. Guidelines for grading are clear and he wants you to do well in class, so he is happy to help.
Quizzes can be tough, but if you spend time with the material you can ace the final. Grading is clearly outlined on day one. Encourage class discussions and/or study groups to succeed.
Giiirl..just no. I was hoping to be one of the people who liked him but I just couldn't. I'm convinced he writes some of his own good reviews lol. Take someone else. He's rude and says lectures optional but then ridicules you if you don't know info he only said during the "optional" lectures that are not included in the prerecorded lectures.
Ed is the cool science/hippie uncle we never got growing up. Wicked smart, personable, very engaging and funny. I have never worked so hard in a class but I seriously regret only taking him for 233. If you are serious about your education, take his classes. It will prepare you well. Ask A LOT of questions. USE THE QUIZZES FOR PRACTICE.
Rude when asked questions, his lectures are very rambly, VERY unorganized. I appreciated that his final is directly from the quizzes, so if you memorize the quizzes you'll be fine. I often found myself confused during lecture but afraid to ask questions due to how he responded to others.
Ed is a hilarious encyclopedia of A and P.. He explains tough topics with spot on analogies and makes himself available to students. I took him twice for 233 because earning an A in Ed's class is something I am proud of. Study in groups and listen to his lectures until you understand them. Ed has a following for a good reason. The best!
Be prepared for longs hours of studying and prep work. Ed is very knowledgeable and full of interesting facts. Do not take if you have lots of courses, full-time work, or demanding obligations. Take if you want to challenge yourself to deeply comprehend the information. 3 exams in total and curved based on class performance. Hard but worth it!
If rote memorization is your game, you'll be fine. Lecture quizzes are all online, multiple choice. No lecture midterm, the lecture final is created from a bank of questions (100~ each for each section). Very generous with lab quiz grading. Ed tells fun stories and can be funny but he is extremely disorganized, abrasive, and words questions poorly.
Lectures are engaging, but the material is challenging. Use resources like the textbook and Unstuck ai to stay on top of the content. With dedication, you can succeed in this class.
Ed does little as possible to teach. During lab he does not show you the structures and expects you to figure it out yourself. You will learn more from YouTube than ED. He is very condescending and rude if you ask for help. You have to go to open lab and ask different professors for help. Avoid at all cost.
AVOID HIM! I think he's writing these good reviews himself because no he is horrible. no lecture homework so you can't have anything to go off to prepare for quizzes. all lecture quizzes are online. no midterms to prepare you for lecture final, just one huge lecture final that is so much of your grade. lab tests are awful. tests are all your grade.
I find AP 233 difficult. You have to study on your own! YouTube and Quizlet are great extra resources for studying. Lectures are hard to understand. The best way to do well is to practice online quizzes regularly. The labs are moderate. We graded the quiz ourselves, and sometimes he tolerably gave us points.
This is the thing, I held my A for 12 weeks then lost it due to the final. Lectures, are not mandatory but he spits off to much information AND IS SOOOO DISORGANIZED. Lab, he will give you lots of models that " could be on the test" and FOR ALL TESTS HE WANTS TO TRIP YOU UP. Quizes are 20 q's, and is supposed to be the final (500 q's to study). :(
Ed is one of my favorite professors I've taken him for AP1 and 2 (3 soon) I personally love his teaching style and would recommend him 100%. Yes, your grade is solely on quizzes and tests, but they are not bad at all as long as you actually put effort into the class. Don't be scared to ask him questions, he is hilarious and wants to help you!
Lectures are painful. Quiz q's are mostly diagnostic and he will throw in a “none of the above” or “more than one of the above” in nearly every question asked, just to make you reconsider anything you know is true. He states to take the quizzes 5 times and you'll know the final, but it cycles the same questions over
Great professor and interesting lectures
He is a great teacher and very engaging. He explains concepts well but when he asks the class questions, he would often make me feel dumb if I answered incorrectly. Lecture quizzes were online with two chances, opens them up to unlimited retakes after due date. Only exam is the final which is 200 points. He also goes barefoot while teaching.
Ed's the best AP resource you will find for physiology, advising, and random clinical questions. He's an engaging lecturer and fun in lab. His classes are exam heavy, and exams aren't easy, especially the final. However most of what I learned stays with me because Ed ties the series together well. I worked to earn my A and I'm proud of it.Take Ed!
You are only graded on the lec/lab quizzes, the lec/lab finals. He will make you feel dumb if you don't know the answer to something, but he wants you to succeed and actually know the answers and the why behind the answers. He walks barefoot, is hard of hearing, and will talk quietly, so sit closer to the front to hear him. Hard but simple enough.
Ed is great! One of the best professors I've had. He really wants the best for his students and it shows in the prep he gives us in the form of homework, online quizzes and lecture/lab quizzes. He is engaging and although it is test heavy, it balances out your grades as the lecture midterm and finals are difficult. Lab is pretty straightforward.
Ed made A&P manageable. He doesn't want to make the material harder than what it already is so he tries to make things and clear and easy for students to understand. I have struggled with other science classes, but ed makes learning enjoyable.
Ed places a lot of importance on attending and interacting in lectures and labs. But he does a great job at making them interesting and is also just a funny guy. There is a textbook, but his course structure doesn't rely on it too much. I was able to find success by reviewing the lecture slides and lab model pictures and making flashcards.
A good professor that cares about his students success outside of PCC. He is very understanding. Take if you're prone to dumb mistakes.
Just know when in syvania campus you'll have two professors which is hard to get engaged especially if they personally don't agree with some of the things that they both cover. I personally did better with just one professor so if having that structure is for you then so be it. It just doesn't feel as personable to me and can be a bit discouraging
