He's a very funny Texan. But he does repeat the same jokes so just tell him. I didn't really know anything about writing music but now I can understand it and read it pretty well. He's a great teacher and I recommend that you do the homework for points
He was very helpful and funny. There were a lot of extra credit options and he made the tests very clear and pretty easy. Very nice and understanding. Not anal about class absenses or tardies.
Teriffic teacher, he'll go out of his way to help you. He tells a lot of lame jokes, but once you get used to it his class is a lot of fun.
Awesome, very knowledgeable! Funny, good stories, good teaching strategies. Unbiased and fair.
Good teacher, very helpful. Has some corny jokes, but brings laughter to class. Really desires to give you a firm understanding and background in music, regardless if you know anything about music or not. Do homework/reading. Fill out outlines and memorize them to do well on tests.
Mus8 could have been SUPER boring if it had not been for Prof. Demmond. Corny jokes to share with class and makes fun of himself all the time. 99% of the answers for the tests will be given in lecture, so don't miss too much class. 2 concert reviews (2pgs)1 5-8pg paper(any topic about music really)Summed up: TAKE HIM!!
Best class I have ever been in
Man, this guy is a riot. I love coming to class just to hear him speak(he's very southern and always says 'y'all). Makes a hard subject fun to learn and has really lame jokes, but you still laugh at them. Everything he lectures on is in the book and the exams are straight-foward. TAKE HIM, I promise you won't regret it!
I took this class just because I needed credits. What a mistake. If your not a music major I totally advise avoiding this class. You have not so easy tests every 1-2 weeks, 2 classical music concerts to go to, a presentation you have to do in front of the class, a research paper (which he is very picky with) and a cummulative final. AVOID.
This class was really hard for me because I knew NOTHING about music before I took it. I got an A but I had to work for it. Don't miss class or you'll get even more confused. Do your homework and don't get behind on them! He does let you re-do them which is a good way to get points. He also offers extra credit on tests, which there are a lot of.
GOOD TEACHER. MAKES MORE OF THE CLASS THAN IT ACUTALLY IS. GIVES YOU OUTLINES TO STUDY OFF & U FILL THEM OUT IN LECTURE. THE TESTS SCREWED ME BECAUSE I NEVER LOOKED AT THE OUTLINES UNTIL 5 MIN. BE4 THE CLASS, CAUSE IT WAS A 7:30AM(A MISTAKE). THE PROJECT TAKES A LOT OF WORK, AS DOES THE CLASS. I ENDED UP WITH A (B). JUST 2 MUCH WORK 4 THAT CLASS.

The way he teaches music fundamentals is hard to understand. I do not recommend him.
With all the papers we had to write, I felt like I was in English M01 class, then music appreciation.
DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! What a pompus man. If you want to brown nose, you'll love him, if you're looking to learn, not so much. Don't waste time or money on this class.
m01s pretty hard. must memorize scales & play them for him for your "tests". m08s just LOTS of notes. no pprs, no homework, LOTS of tests, like every other day, so be ready for that. dont really use the book in both classes. in m08 MEMORIZE ALL COMPOSERS bc thats really important to him. nice guy, laid back, easy going, a sweetheart w. corny jokes
Dr. Demmond is an amazing teacher in the fact that he realizes that there is not a set way to teach a subject like music. He is able to explain things in different ways and is very forgiving if you mess up on tests or HW (in Harmony classes) Overall extremely recommended if you are a music major or have interest in the field of music
Good guy, kind of a goofball. He makes jokes all the time about musicians and loves to laugh. There isn't much homework, only 2 concert reviews, and an outline, all due at the end of the semester. He gives you outlines for each chapter that you just fill out during class. His test are pretty easy if you just study your notes.
Demmond is great! he's such a nice and funny man. i thought this class was going to be death but demmond found ways to make it as interesting and enjoyable as possible and i really did enjoy his class. i highly recommend taking it!!! dooo it. oh and lots of extra credit! which really helped out in the end... hes awesome.
He keep the class interesting and almost bearable especially since I took it over the summer. Brings in more than just classical music which is really nice. Relaxed grading is also cool. Do the extra credit...its really easy and definitely helps
He was a fun, energatic, funny, nice teacher. hes clear, concise, and fair. You do have to read the book thuroughly, and tests are on the tough side. The only down side to him is he takes all of class time. starts early and ends on the dot, no early enders with him, But i highly reccomend. FUN and learned a lot. you will really appreciate music
Oh, such a fun teacher! He is engaged, interesting, intelligent, kinda dorky sometimes. If you're not a classical music fan, that's fine, just wait until he gets into modern and world music. This class is really a music Appreciation, music of all kinds and styles, and he makes this journey exciting.
Mr. Demmond deffinetely kept the class interesting. Yes, his jocks aren't the best in the world, but that's part of why the class is interesting. You need to listen to all the songs on the CDs for the chapters tests. The tests aren't all that difficult if you pay attention or read the chapters. Grade wise, I would say you would have to try to fail.
Funny guy in a dorky way. I enjoyed the class. Beware though, this is not a "clap for credit" course. Follow the study guide and you'l do fine.
I enjoyed this professor, as he was funny and interesting. This is not a kick-back class, though, as you must, must, must use his Study Guide (I did it and got an "A"). There are a lot of terms to learn, but the Study Guide is tremendously helpful. You'll have to do two concert reviews. Just get them done and out of the way (don't procrastinate!).
This class was hard!! You will have to read the book and listen to the music cd in order to get an 'A' in this class. Some of his jokes are corny but overall he's a great professor.
very amazing curving system with tests, not mandatory for classes, but read text and study guide. send him ur two essays before hell tell u how he wants it and if u do as he says u get 100%
I love most music classes -its my major - but this is the worst music class I have taken. Instead of teaching, he rants and yells and rants some more. The content is also VERY boring. I would avoid taking him.
5+++++
loved him! hes very knowledgeable, this was a hard class for me but he has TONS of extra credit on tests. i deff recommend this class even if ur not majoring in music, he is very funny and nice and ill miss his class alot. take lots of notes and study hard and youll get a B, listen to music cds & ull get an A
nice goofy guy. weird sense of humor. Cares a lot about the topic. Seems like a lot of work but not as much as you would think. show up to class and you can get a B on test if you listen. Enough extra credit throughout class to bost your grade at least 10%. Curves test and fair grading.
This teacher is a disgrace to MUSIC. I don't see how he is a "Dr." in Music. He knows he is stupid and doesn't remember what he assigns for homework and gets mad if you bring it. He is NEVER prepared for class or FINAL exams. His tests are full of typos. The only kids who passed where already knowledgeable about Music. Don't TAKE this GUY!
Took him for Music Appreciation. Easiest class I've had a MC, and also the MOST BORING!! Had to buy an ipod touch just to make it through this class. Easy tests, you have to go to 2 concerts and write required reviews. No required HW. One word describes this class - BORING (and useless for me)
I'm sure he has much knowledge about music, but he just cannot teach it.He cant explain things very well to those who have no musical background. He would grade my homework wrong when it was correct! He calls himself a stupid teacher frequently. Not responsible or prepared! For an easy A: have knowledge in music, read text, and do his extracredit.
Nothing good to say at all!! Beware!!!
Ridiculous teacher! Extrememly hard because of his terrible teaching method. Spend alot of money on the book with this horrifically complicated online portion your supposed to do. fairly confident the class average was a D. was my hardest class and had to drop ><
Excellent teacher. He's funny and engaging, so his class will keep your attention. Tests have a lot of extra credit, and you can turn in homework early so you can fix mistakes. It was an easy class for me because of my music background, but it will be tougher for others. However, it is still possible to get an A w/o a music background. Excellent!
Didn't get an A, but a fun teacher anyway. Makes the class interesting but requires two concert reviews during the semester. Also, you must log into (meaning BUY) the online services to listen to music. Explains well, but can get behind at times and rushes certain parts. Likes to crack jokes (not bad ones). Would recommend taking this course.
Great teacher. Very helpful
Pretty easy teacher. We barely ever used the book. He tells you what questions are going to be on the test. Same questions on previous chapters are on every tests. Gives a lot of extra credit questions on the test. If you take notes in class and study them alone, you will get a high grade.
Demmond is an amazing teacher. He grades fairly and his lectures are always interesting. He is passionate about what he teaches and willing to help his students. His tests are not difficult because his lectures are relevant to what is on the test. He is even courteous enough to review specifically what you need to study on the tests and final.
Very cool, nice and easy even though i did not get an A i still enjoyed his class! pretty easy test and grades easy!
i took music appreciation and i loved it. i always thought it would be boring and useless but it wasnt! he makes the class interesting and offers a lot of tests so that you have a lot of points. also there are many extra credit opportunities :) he really loves music and made me appreciate it. take him.
Funny guy. Lectures are boring sometimes but he does all he can to make them fun. Jokes with everyone and makes fun of himself. Tests are hard but there's so much xtra credit that you end up with a higher grade anyway. No hw, just study for tests and do the concert reviews and you're golden. Don't buy the textbook! It's online anyway.
The hardest teacher I had at Moorpark. He simply does not know how to teach, so he tries to be funny to make up for it. All the extra work we had to do for music appreciation was ridiculous! I had to put more time and effort in his class than my English class. Do NOT take him.
I am not sure what even happened in that class haha. The tests I thought I did well on, I would get C's or D's and the tests I thought I did poorly on, I got A's. I honestly don't even know what went down in that class, but I wouldn't recommend him for music appreciation.
Mr. Demmond is super funny and is very passionate about what he teaches. Tells corny jokes, but you have to laugh because they're so corny. =D Good-natured and offers lots of extra credit if you aren't doing so well on the tests - Which are all pretty easy by the way. Just take some time to ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK and you'll do fine! Easy A!
A hard and boring class. I could not believe how a music class could be so painful. Expect a lot of reading and studying. I barley passed this class. I do not recommend Demmond to anyone.
mr demmond is very weird, and very boring. least favorite teacher i have had so far at MP. i have gotten all a's at MP until this class. he is very hard to follow and often not willing to clarify when questions are asked. i do NOT recommend him at all.
He was very easy. He adds ALOT of extra credit and makes it very easy to pass the class. Has a funny sense of humor. Attendence is not mandatory. Great Guy
He is a good professor. He wants you to do well and offers a TON of extra credit. He tells you what to study and wants you to do well. His jokes are lame but over all he was the best professor I have had so far. As long as you study you should get an A.
dont take him very hard im an a student and got a c in his class by doing concert reports. never thought it wouldve been that hard
weird little guy with a southern accent, but overall he's alright. Class was difficult t follow as he often gave information in lecture that wasn't on the test. Assigns a lot of busy work but that helps to cushion your grade in the end. Probably one of the better music teachers though so take him.
His class is easy. Be prepared to pay though for a) your homework that won't help you b)concerts that you must review c) your book. Had I known how much it would cost I wouldn't have taken it. Waste of time, very average teacher.
Musicianship is a very VERY difficult class. And I'm a music major... Prof did his best to be helpful, but was not very effective in teaching. Overall fair.
Easy A but he gives long boring lectures. Can pass without ever going to class but he takes roll so if you miss too much you will be dropped. don't buy the textbook
Pretty much an online class you have to show up for lectures. Has all quizzes and test online, probably 50-70 of them during the semester plus outside work needed. Expects a lot from his students
Professor Demmond was super nice! You go to class for lecture and take all the tests and quizzes online, so you can use your notes!! You have to do two concert reviews which were not a lot and I enjoyed going to the concerts. The class overall was okay. I heard it was an easy A class, but you really do have to work for it.
It seems like most of this professor's negative feedback is coming from people who thought they could pass just by showing up to class and zoning out. Professor Demmond is a really funny guy and I really enjoyed his lectures. There is a lot of online work but it's fairly easy and he gives an endless amount of extra credit. Highly recommended.
Professor Demmond is a funny guy. He'll ask questions on the exam where you're required to identify musical principles and one of the multiple choice options will be a lawn mower and he'll play an audio track of a lawn mower. Each test was 50 questions, and there were 4. The final was a two hundred question test, it was a review of the prior exams.
Terrible professor. Makes his music appreciation class out to be more akin to a theory class. His concert reviews will kill you if you don't do them. He loves to screw students over at the last possible minute and doesn't offer any help before the finals. Waste of time and money. He makes you hate classical music more and have less appreciation
He's very funny which makes the class interesting, and he cares about your grade. Just about all semester he moved due dates so people that missed it could have a second chance. Class is an easy A if you show up and take notes. Everything is done online.
Dr. Demmond was a joy to have all semester. He lectures every single class, but he has a good sense of humor and weird personality to make it interesting. This class is an EASY A. The class ends up being about 900 pints for an A+, but there are about 1300 points possible (YES, that much extra credit). All lectures posted online. TAKE HIS CLASS
His lectures were very entertaining to learn about the material, and I loved how all the homework, quizzes, and exams were online. He used Canvas instead of D2L, which made a huge difference because I could always see my grade and see how to improve. He is hilarious and super easy to relate to.
This was my one of my first classes as a college student. He is great at holding your attention, there is an insane amount of extra credit, he will make sure to announce if something he says will be on a quiz/exam/final. His class is very straight forward and easy to keep up with. Easy A for sure. Taking thorough notes is all you need to pass.
He gives you so much extra credit, it's hard to not pass. You don't need the textbook, but definitely take notes. There are 2 concert reviews which aren't hard, and the online work isn't too hard either but he has you complete quite a few quizzes/discussions. Overall he's an awesome professor and definitely makes class interesting.
This professor is really great. Hes extremely funny and makes the class interesting.
Professor Demmond is one of the better professors I have come across. He has a doctorate degree in music theory and knows the subject very well. You will have 2 concert reviews you need to do and all the tests are online. Most people skipped his lectures, but he is very good to those who show up. Easy A and I highly recommend taking this class.
Professor Demmond is a great professor and person. He's incredibly understanding, caring, and has a genuine concern for the student's success. His classes aren't geared to be difficult at all; the content is straightforward and he offers extra credit as well. If you need any music course, definitely take this professor.
Took this class to fulfill an IGETC requirement and knew nothing about music. It is a very easy course with a lot of extra credit. There are a lot of online tests and quizzes but allow multiple attempts and is graded out of less points than questions so theyre super easy. Too many lectures but just show up, take notes, and get an easy A.
Such an incredible professor! Lecture has never been as fun as with him. He's old-school classy yet gets the jokes of millennials. Super easy class to pass, just show up, participate, do the online quizzes (which are easy) and there's two short papers. You are truly missing out if you skip this class. Would 110% take again.
Lots of discussions that aren't too bad. TONS of extra credit. Sends lots of emails about random stuff but he is nice, funny, and caring. The video lectures bugged out a lot and the audio could only be heard in the left ear which was kind of annoying. Would recommend 9/10.
Professor Demmond was the worst professor you will ever have. I have accommodations and he refused to ever help me. Does not respond to emails. Does not want to help you if you need it. You will have many quizzes a week, and tests all the time. You have to purchase his own book that he wrote. If you can choose a different professor, do so.
Prof. Demmond is the most HILARIOUS music professor I have ever had the pleasure of taking! He makes his lectures fun, inserting little jokes and stories here and there, while still giving lots of information. He gives many extra credit assignments, and if you do those and don't miss too many lectures, it's hard not to get an A in the class.
Mr. Demmond is a good teacher, I took his online class this year. It is very doable to get an A+ in this class. You can get an A+ if you score well on tests and do the extra credit offered. There are many chances for extra credit opportunities, and I recommend you take them since they can help your grade.
Just choose another teacher. respect the guy but can't teach basics well.
Took music appreciation because I thought it would be an interesting class and not too heavy with music theory, to my disappointment it was boring and filled with things an average person who doesn't play an instrument finds difficult to follow. He's probably be better in an actual music class, but this was meant to be introductory.
He is a very smart and helpful guy. However, this class is incredibly hard if you have 0 music experience. He is willing to help if you ask questions. Main issue I have is that almost the entire class failed an exam and he sent an announcement calling us lazy. Luckily, he gives a ton of EC. Prepare to spend hours teaching yourself material.
There is a ton of extra credit available, but it is the only reason I passed his music appreciation class. The class is difficult and very history focused, which I didn't expect. Also, he is rude over email and refuses to admit if he makes a mistake. I would not recommend taking one of his courses.
The course was async and 8 weeks. Interaction was fairly limited, but with written lectures, recommended YouTube videos, and my own research, I was able to learn everything (with limited previous knowledge). LOTS of extra credit opportunities (it's a little absurd actually). I would definitely take another course from him.
So basically i took this class because music appreciation sounds so easy. As it should be. Prof Demmond assigns too much homework it is a nightmare. There was an external website of his own that you had to do homework on as well as on canvas, it's impossible to figure out. There is a lot of extra credit but it's not worth the stress, trust me.
Due to this inorganization, this professor isn't organized and I often struggle to send him emails.
He doesn't even teach you at all, he gives you these modules that make absouletely no sense to a person who has no knowledge prior to taking a music course. This class is super hard and he really doesn't care about you at all. He says to reread the chapter even though you don't understand a single thing
Do Not take his class! Unorganized! Does not teach! Faulty website he created for his assignments!
Wasn't respectful to students and wasn't very accommodating. One of the most rude and disrespectful professors I've ever had. His tests and homework isn't too bad but trying to understand his lectures isn't fun because it's a lot of reading. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TAKING THIS COURSE.
DO NOT RECOMMEND!! Genuinely the most rude and disrespectful professor I have ever had. The class is very easy and there are lots of extra credit opportunities, but when it comes to communicating with students he spams announcements and comes off as condescending while blaming the students. The class is very easy but PLEASE avoid him if possible.
Do yourself a favor and drop this class. Took the music fundamentals class online and I dropped it after two weeks. The syllabus is so confusing. The way he wants you to turn in homework is so confusing and so paper heavy. He is not computer savvy whatsoever. I would highly taking Brett Wilson‘s class at Ventura college instead.
One of the easiest classes I've taken. Assignments and tests are straightforward( read the syllabus) ! his textbook is required & reading is a bit heavy but he makes the reading fun and it's truly not hard.Offers a lot of extra credit. As long as you do the work &aren't slacking off, its pretty hard to not pass the class. Would highly recommend!
