Don't just study what he tells you to for tests, study everything. Buy the book - you'll need it. Classes are boring and he likes group work, which I've always hated. Pretty easy class, but you don't learn a lot. I recommend a different teacher.
This class is super easy. Gives a lot of extra credit. Class is soooooo boring. He enjoys group work and making us watch dumb movies.
Best teacher in the world!!! you will definitly pass with an A or a B. just put in a little work and thats all you will need
Great teacher. Excellent music tastes and liberal approach to teaching
Definitely an easy A. Gives more extra credit than tests, but he likes group work and has horrible taste in music. Im very happy i took his class.
He's a nice guy but he didn't communicate his knowledge as well as he could have. Sometimes I wondered why I went to class everyday, since I wasn't learning anything new. He likes group work, and you may have to work a group as large as 15 people. Too many movies..opt for projects rather than exams.
Very easy A. Tests are online for 24 hours. Take only once, no backtracking. All questions come from the book. Most of the time, just copy the question and paste it on the textbook's website (URL comes with book) and get the answer. Only showed to class when he said to. Much communication via email.
He has six exams or you have the choice to do a project...at least half of the projects are very easy A's. The 1st and 5th are the best. Otherwise the exams are right out of the book and classes aren't very long.
Easy class, got a B. Lots of extra credit if you go to class. 6 exams out of the book online worth 15 pts each, and a group project. Highly recommended easy class.
Mr. Ford is a really funny guy. This class was really easy, there are a total of 6 assignments (worth 15 pts each)and you either do a project or an exam that you take online & can use your book. There is one group assignment which sucked, but overall this class was a very easy A.
if you are willing to go to class and work, he is willing to help you. make sure he knows your name
You should go to class, do the readings, and do the extra credit assignments when given. You won't regret this class!!!! He's funny and tries to liven up the class, so it's cool.
He is very funny. Reading the text and going to class is the only way to get good grades in the class, but it's not punishment because he gives a lot of cool information. I nevre saw a power point slide, and that was great!
This was a double class I took with two profs - EJ being one of them. If you go to class you get extra credit. I suggest going to class - he was always very lively and a jokester. He's very jadded though, which sometimes wasn't amusing.
He was very helpful, funny and willing to bend over backwards for the students. There is no one anyone could get lower than a B in this class. He makes the subject interesting.
EJ is awesome! Very helpful and tries his hardest to keep things interesting. Great class, even better teacher.
This man is great !!! Soo funny and lively and not hard and great videos. If you dont read ...no problem its all online tests !! Great man !! loved him took him for 2 diff classes cuz u just cant get enough of EJ !!!! <3
Always trys to keep class interesting - will help - just work with him and he'll work with you!
If his tests were on his notes or lectures you would be fine, but there not.
He keeps me awake for a two hour class that I'm not really interested in, and he puts tests online for 24 hours.
Easy class. He is a fun, easy-going guy... and nice to listen to. The only work in the class was tests, which are online. You have 24 hours to take them, and can take however long you want on them.. and even pause and get back to it later. Taking notes doesn't really matter.. but the book is essential for the tests.
this class sucked, the tests are online, and you would think that if you spent a few hours on them you would do well, but i wound up with a B in this damn class because the tests are unclear. this class was thought to be my easiest class this semester by far, and yet, its the only class i didnt get an A in...
This class is prety interesting. The professor is really cool but he has some dry humor sometimes. All his tests are on blackboard and there are 5 of them (including the final). He takes attendace all the time so beware. He takes attendance with his clicker system. Or he did last semester. I would recommend this class.
At first this class seems great because the test are online and obviously open book, open note. But the test was on the most ridiculously little details in the book that took forever to find...they usually took about 6 hours for a 40 question test...AT LEAST!!!
This class was very easy, the tests are online so you can use every available resource. EJ was very helpful, understanding, and funny! If you do the work, which is very easy you'll be fine I hardly tried in that class and got a 99% take it it's interesting.
This class is extreeeeemely boring but very easy, if you do all the work its pretty hard not to get an A/B. Tests are extremely tedious but if you look hard enough you can find the answers. The only time you use the text book is for the test. My friend got a D on both the midterm and final but did all the homework and got a b what more cud u ask 4?
He is a great professor, his class is fun and there are fun activities. The tests are a somewhat difficult, but they are online and you have one day to take them. The class in itself is pretty easy as long as you use your textbook.
Amazing Teacher. Thats all I can say.
I didn't really care at all about this class. He tried forming the entire class into groups of 10, and if you weren't in a group of ten then your group was still required pull the same load You vote on 2 group leaders and they pretty much decide your grade. I didnt care at first, but somehow a freshman got the job and screwed me over, big time.
EJ is the man!...I recommend being a team leader - gets you 5 pts extra credit at the end of semester which gave me an A...the team leader decides the grades only if EJ notices the group is slacking in attendence and some arent pulling their weight..overall easy class and ej is balling!
Great instructor, fun class
Funny and absolutely amazing class. He splits you into groups but if your a workable and likable person than everything should be fine. Easy 'A' . Not a lot of work, tests are online, and the professor is an old punk rocker with a hilarious personality. TAKE THIS CLASS. You WONT REGRET IT.
A lot of his class is structured around learning almost the entire textbook. Too much boring reading.
Great teacher! I learned a lot! He is very intelligent and funny. Take the class!!! You def. won't regret it!
Didn't like his class. In the second half of the semester he kept changing what were were required to do and it got frustrating.
He plays really annoying music at the beginning of class and is a huge liberal. The first half was extremely easy with all tests online and 48 hours to complete. The second half was just annoying. Book reports or projects, your choice. He just couldn't decide what he really wanted you to do. Plus, mandatory extra credit??
EJ is extremely knowledgeable about anthropology and will inspire you.
Good professor, you will learn much.
he is awesome
great professor
E.J. Is an excellent professor, and very approachable. He relates to you as an equal, and the class was presented as a 'guided' open forum. That being said, he's serious about politics and anthropology, and expects the same from his students; also, I think he's got a good sense of humor... and I gave him a pepper cause he's like a big teddy bear!
Great guy
It's hard for him to really help students because the class is so big, but he's a great guy. Sometimes the lecture can be boring, but other times he makes it really funny. The videos he plays in class are informative and interesting. The format for the semester project is vague and backwards, so be wary of that. Internet tests are sometimes hard.
EJ is a brilliant man, but the mandatory attendance with the clickers sucked. Overall, I'd recommend him because he's nice, cool, funny, and not terribly difficult.
This was a large lecture class that had a 50min discussion/lab class with a TA. The discussion class is the main part of your grade, including a group project. EJ encouraged you to ask the TA questions and not him. The lecture was mandatory and took attendance with clickers. Lectures were simple and movies broke up the class.
Very good class, not structured traditionally. No tests, no mid term or final exams. Only four big project due throughout the whole semester. As long as you did these project and participated in class, you'd be fine. His talks about anthropology and politics are good and the class discussions are also interesting.
He was kind of fun in class and I had heard his class was loads of fun but it was fairly boring. I didn't like it much, and i wish he would have been more of a teacher about the class. I didn't like being told to do the projects on my own and without much guidance. I felt like I was learning from the book more than I was from him.
He is great teacher! He is always very excited about the subject which makes you interested in it. Very awesome teacher!!!!
Once I learned that his lectures had nothing to do with the online tests, I stopped going to them. He's a funny guy and loves teaching, but the only classes I attended were the discussion ones, because they were mandatory. No real tests, one big group project that ends up being 75% of your grade, but not complicated.
Lang & Cult: He NEVER taught us anything. I learned nothing at all. We had 2 project presentations and 2 minor assign, 1 'big project' which was unclear. Boring class, teacher is NOT funny or cool, he's just obnoxious & tries too hard. I really disliked it and feel really discouraged. Wish he was a teacher not your 'buddy'. You're paying for this!
Simply do the work and you'll do fine. A lot of students complain they weren't given enough instruction for the projects, well this is college and he treats you like a college student. Do the projects and turn them in, that's all he asks. He's passionate and not boring.
Very easy A. Two tests online take them as many times as needed to get an A. One group presentation where you present an assigned chapter. The final is also online. Attendance is needed at the beginning to get a group but after that attendance drops. HE is a cool guy and funny. If you like anthropology it helps too.
Easy!
Intro to Anthro with Ford is really easy and enjoyable. We were supposed to have 2 powerpoints to do in groups, and 2 online tests you could take as many times as you want, but he canceled one of our projects, love the class and would highly reccomend, great guy.
EJ rocks! Best professor ever! I've improved so much on research papers. You're required to do 4 group projects, which require research and writing skills, but as long as you divide the work evenly, the class is super manageable. Just make sure you don't have any slackers in the group, and follow the format for papers, and you're golden!
Extremely easy course. Attendance is not at all required, buy the textbook and teach yourself the course. Exams are straight from the text, open book, and you can take them as many time as you want.
Just dont do it. this class has so much potential but not with this teacher.
Had him for Intro to Anthropology. Mr. Ford is a very cool guy, but this is practically an online class; every assignment is online except for a presentation you have to give to a mostly empty class. It's an easy class and there's not much work to do.
Dr Ford is an amazing prof, and his teaching methods are great. Although I am senior, Anthro major, and due to his class structure this was the first opportunity I have had to do with 3team mates, my own research, and fieldwork. With his knowledge he should also be teaching higher level courses. Loved his dry humor. Highly recommend.
4 group projects the whole semester. He is always open to answer questions and help with the project. He'll even pretty much come up with the ideas for you. Make sure you pick a good group at the beginning and you'll have a great class
Easy online class, about 7 essays that are 250/500 words each and that's it for the entire course! Also very easy to get A's on all the assignments, just look in the book for a couple examples and your good.
This guy is unorganized and unhelpful. Seems scatterbrained. Records grades incorrectly and doesn't respond to emails. Posted final grades late. TA was unhelpful too.
It was all group work 3 people max. 7 essays. No tests. Follow the instructions and answer all the questions for the essays with the correct citation an you get an A. Simple participation points.
Online class with not much to do with Anthropology. 7 or 8 essays with no tests, finals, or quizzes. Just don't take if you expect anything great or to really learn anything about anthropology. Also the professor is nonexistent. I would say I don't even have one if I hadn't been getting grades this whole time.
The class is entirely group work base if you don't like depending on other don't take the course. Also he has a smart mouth.
DO NOT (I REPEAT) DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I foolishly took this class to learn more about the more controversial sides of capitalism. It ended up being just massive criticism without evidence. This teacher was unwilling to listen to any views outside of his own. He would regularly shut down students who disagreed with him in class. NEVER TAKE THIS!
This guy is awesome! Literally haven't gone for most of this semester and have a high grade. He's funny and lenient. Definitely have to take him.
He's a great and easy-going professor, and lenient if you're a bit behind as long as you're doing your work. The class is based on group projects and not on readings, so if you think you'd prefer lectures on all the linguistic theories, don't be disappointed. It's a good experience if you're into anthropology.
If you do NOT like group projects then this is not a class for you. All the projects are group projects. If you decide to take this class anyway choose your group wisely. There are 4 projects in total and a paper due one week after the presentation of your project. He holds nothing back when it comes to criticizing your work. Easy A.
Nice guy, easy class. Choose your group members wisely. The only grades are from the four group projects. If you need ideas for your project he's willing to help. Due dates are very lenient. Interesting class discussions.
There is a 250-500 word discussion post every other week and you can be in a group and the one post each week will count for the whole group. There are no tests or quizzes and you really don't have to show up for class. If your looking for an easy FKL take this class.
Tried to teach a lecture hall class like a small class by assigning group projects to a total of 200+ students and expected them all to have time to present. We essentially had no time for actual lectures. I wish there was a sample of what he was looking for in our project reports, but we were left in the dark.
It REVOLVES around group projects which I didn't love because it was the same group all semester. But the projects weren't tough. Powerpoint and paper at the end of 3 projects. MAKE SURE YOU GO TO OFFICE HOURS IF YOU NEED HELP ON THE PROJECT! Those meetings helped me soooo much! He gave me ideas of how I can do my projects. Would recommend with EJ!
Not a great professor; lectures are long, but not mandatory. However, his class is extremely easy, and it is a GPA booster. As long as you put effort into the group projects, you will get an A. There are no tests, quizzes, or homework assignments; only group projects.
A great professor! He really goes in depth in the topics and gives amazing and relatable examples. Very funny and makes the class interesting; however, the class is project based and attendance is needed to make sure you understand the topics since its all on the projects. Appreciates participation.
Took this class to satisfy an FKL. Mr. Ford is defiantly a smart man and I enjoyed listening to him talk during class. There are only 3 projects and the final was online so the class should be an easy A.
Dr. Ford has great cultural anthropology knowledge but this linguistics class was super boring. Although all you have to do is four exercises and two papers, he doesn't grade them in enough time for you to be able to successfully complete the next assignment.
EJ was a pretty good professor, not a whole lot to complain about. He does take a while for grading, and the Anthropology department doesn't round final grades. I found out that an 89.99 is still a B+ on the last day of classes. Also, you can get by without the text book, but my grade sorta reflects what that can lead to.
Great Professor !!! If you follow his instructions consider it an easy A !!!
Seriously this class was one of the most frustrating classes I've ever taken. It was Linguistic Anthropology which is NOT EJ's specialty. I'm sure he's probably knowledgable in his field and he's a nice guy overall but his assignments are unclear, he doesn't grade assignments in a relatively OK amount of time, and he's not at all helpful.
Awesome teacher. No favouritism, a lot of input, reasonable grading structures. Insightful, thorough and interactive lectures. I hope very much that I will get to take his upper level classes!
Classes were enjoyable, quizzes were pretty easy as long as you read the chapters from the textbook. Participation is a plus. Good sense of humor, I would definitely recommend him and would take him again in the future.
Took this class online and it was super easy. You don't even need to read the book because the tests have unlimited attempts.
Ant2000 was super straightforward and easy! only 2 essays and 4 exams that were also super easy!
THIS GUY IS AMAZING! Loved his class.
Such a funny teacher. There is no test in this class, 6 papers that don't have a minimum word count. Took it in person and attendance isn't mandatory just every once and awhile he'll do an in-class quiz. Easy grader finished course with a 98 A and he is VERY flexible with due dates
While you actually have to work in this class, EJ is always ready to work with you. Definitely takes late work, more than willing to give you an A.
Okay lectures. Not a strict prof, pretty laid back. Doesn't respond to messages/emails so definitely make a friend in class if you have any questions/concerns. Pretty much just do the work & you get an A (waits until the end of the term to grade). Attendance not required & only the Ahearn book is needed for the assignments.
The man is funny, truth be told. His class is by no means hard, and if anything the things he grades are given a bit more slack than his TA's hands. Come to class or don't - there are "hot seats" assigned by the first couple weeks of class for reading. There is a free text book or a five dollar one that isn't half bad for more context. You're good.
If you are not a motivated person, do not take his class. There are 2 assignments and 2 project papers so its an easy A if you do the work but he is unclear with direction, does not grade until the end, and the first few weeks of class is simply banter between him and students hes had before. Youll be fine if you are okay teaching yourself.
Professor Ford made what sounded like a boring class actually somewhat interesting for me. He's a pretty chill professor and there isn't a lot of assignments to do during the semester. He's an easy grader so the class is an easy A so long as you can write papers well. He says participation is mandatory but that wasn't the case for my class.
One of the easiest classes I have ever taken. No attendance, classwork, exams, or homework. Just 3 papers that don't even require the material he teaches to complete them. Definitely recommend. Don't know why he has such a low rating. Very cool professor and very funny!
This class confirmed for me that my chosen minor was perfect for me. You will be required to read the text to properly participate in discussion posts. It is very possible to earn an A in this course.
I took him in the summer and attendance didnt really matter. His lectures were interesting and relevant and I liked how his lectures were discussion style. The only real assignments were 3 essays andhe was very helpful in that process.
Although this class was not difficult I found his "lectures" a little pointless; he just answers questions and doesn't go over the powerpoint slides. He was a really nice teacher. Make sure to do the reading and put effort into your essay.
There were 6 super short (500 word max) papers we had to do, 6 quizzes, and then send in questions for him to review in his lectures. I received extra credit a few times for my questions I sent in so there are extra credit opportunities. You will need the textbook for your quizzes and papers. He responds back to emails quickly.
This class was a breeze. I put in about 2-3 hours of work every two weeks and got an A+. And he's a great guy. Just a great experience overall, I learned a lot about anthropology.
All the assignments were easy to do online with a quiz and 200-300 word essay every module (there were six when I took it). After the second week of classes, I stopped going to his lectures and did fine with just the textbook. Pretty easy course for the credit you need.
Very easy class and great professor. I only attended a few classes but I was able to do great on the 3 main projects. Lots of extra credit and generous grading on assignments. The assignments themselves were fun and interesting.
Very down to earth Professor. Assigns 5 HW assignments during the entire semester, each assignment is a field research paper that you have to go out to a place and study. First is a participant observation, second is an interview at the same site etc. In-class periods are just him talking through a PowerPoint over the book chapters. Very good,10/10
He was so nice, and cared a lot about his students and the course material. His workload was fairly easy. The class is easy and the material, and he is really a good professor!
Professor Ford (prefers E.J.) is a teacher who truly cares about his students if they have questions, and if you email him, either his TA or he will answer and try to get you the help that you need. However, the only thing is that his lectures are incredibly dull. You may stop showing up once you complete the 3 projects he assigns.
Lectures are PowerPoints based on the textbook, visually unappealing. Otherwise a great professor, three assignments and a final exam which is open book with multiple attempts. Insightful answers when asked questions. Good professor and an easy A if you put effort!
Dr. Ford is a down-to-earth and funny prof. who makes material interesting and digestible in his lectures. While his lectures hinge around reading off a Powerpoint, he'll also throw in discussion questions that deepen your understanding of a topic's relevance. While there's few assigments, he's an easy grader. Put in the work and you'll be fine :)
Professor is alright but the instructions for the assignments are literally the worst I have ever seen so many people said they had issues following them correctly because they made zero sense and then we got blamed for not doing it the way he wanted it as if it was our fault, would never take this professor again nor do I recommend anyone do so.
He makes anthropology seem interesting. Fair grader, very few assignments. He is clear with what he wants assignments to look like, overall great experience!
Would 100% take this class again. Attendance was not mandatory and all the PowerPoints are on Canvas. He is very caring and wants you to succeed in his class, which I believe would be very easy to do. You are only graded on like 6 quizzes and then 6 essays (300 words) so not bad. He is very interested in the topic and cares a lot about it.
