He is a really good teacher, just goes really slow. He spends time talking about stuff that is not math, leaving us behind..
The best math prof i've ever had- very clear lecturer, good sense of humor. Stuff made sense.
He is such a great teacher! He explains things slowly, but extremely clearly. We learn more about the concepts and how they are derived than merely creating problems. His way of teaching makes you really understand the material. And a plus is that HE IS SO HOT!!!
A very clear and good lecturer. He really nails down the fundamentals of multivariable calculus for students.
Explains complicated material on extremely simple, fundamental level so we can relate the hard stuff to the easy stuff we already know. Very helpful- makes sure you understand why and how we get the formulas and the concepts we learn; and he's really friendly and easygoing in lecture.
Breaks down the material very well, but tends to give the same lecture for days in a row. On the plus side, you don't have to worry if you miss a class. On the other hand, the lectures fall behind the homeworks pretty often
Very thorough in explanation of fundamentals. Always makes sure you understand the material and answers any questions during lecture. And.. he's rather gorgeous.
clear lecturer, falls behind assigned topics
His lectures are very detailed and he constantly makes analogies to one-dimension. Thus, they can get very tiring to listen to, but he really nails down the fundamentals and a lot of the theory. He won't, however, simply do problems from the homework, and his lectures are often far behind schedule. His midterms are reasonable and straightforward.
Best math professor at Cal! If he were teaching Math 53 again, I would definitely take it. He makes several not-math-related jokes and is rather entertaining. Oh yeah, and he is HOT! for a math professor. HW does fall behind but the material isn't that difficult...just read the book.
soooo unclear! most unorganized teacher ever! always digresses and goes on tangents. never finishes lecture material on time! lectured on the last 2 sections of the text book the day before the final exam! wtf?!?! and he called it a review when he never talked about it before! if he didn't talk about it before, don't put it on the damn final!!! fuk
Can't be too helpful when he falls behind in the lectures. His lectures are also boring.
His lecture is very clear and helpful for me. Take his class.
His lectures, although slow, always relate harder material to easier material.
very clear and coherent lecturer. although he likes to delve to deeply into the material for a lower division class. Fell behind schedule a lot so we had to do the hw before he lectured on it.
He was well organized and explained things clearly. very neat writing, which is helpful if you plan to pay attention. Good Professor for such difficult material.
Didn't really like this class too much but to be fair it was mostly the material that blew it for me. Cool guy, snazzy dresser, very smart, but his midterms and finals are far harder than you'd ever expect going into them, and thats with an already difficult subject so the class can get very difficult at times.

Prof. Frenkel is an excellent math professor. If you pay close attention during his lectures, you will understand the theory behind the plug-and-chug problems very very well. He had incredibly well-articulated and structured lectures. His midterms were generally straight-forward, but the final was harder.
Fairly easy class. Just do the homework, curves are nice. He is very clear in lecture, though he did rush a little towards the end (fall 05).
I used to like math. Then i hit this class... But it's not the teacher but rather the material itself. Frenkel tends to relate hard concepts to easier ones which is a very good method of teaching. He has a bit of an accent that makes it harder to understand him but it's not very strong. he is a very good teacher. Overall, he's awesome.
Professor Frenkel is an excellent lecturer however he only lectures about the general concepts which makes applying them to specific problems near impossible. You have to rely heavily on your GSI for examples. His exams are significantly more difficult than the homework and practice exams so try to seek out someone who took the class before.
He is a horrible professor. Spends copious amounts of time on completely useless topics, ie differentiating between the O's used to denote the origin, 0, the zero vector, the null solution set, etc for twenty minutes. He can't teach if .. he just can't teach. Never take this professor's classes if you can avoid it. Take it next semester. No joke.
Frenkel likes to relate Multivariable concepts to single variable concepts and spends most of his time explaining concepts instead of how to use them. Midterms and the Final are very like the homework and take the medium/hard concepts from them and reiterate them in a similar problem.
Amazing Professor. Truly imparts the beauty of mathematics and makes concepts crystal clear. Will definitely enrich your understanding of mathematics, relating concepts extensively by analogy.
I think Frenkel is one of the better lecturers at Berkeley since others are even worse. However, it is true that the class can get boring since he loves talking about single-variable calculus and sticking with the basic concepts. I attended almost all of his lectures and dozed off many times but didn't miss much since he taught at a very slow pace.
Great professor! Spends a lot of times going over concepts, but not examples. However, if you do understand his concepts in class, homework is easy. Midterms/Finals do-able, provides mock tests and review material. Clear lecturer. attend discussion for GSI to go over actual examples. Clearly the best math professor I've had at CAL.
He moved slowly through the material for the whole semester. Sure, he's good at establishing fundamentals with references to "single variable calculus." A lot of the teaching came from book and GSI. Provided interesting insights near the end. Straightforward exams, and he's a good person.
His lectures are pretty clear. I would had prefer that he do more difficult examples of problems during lecture, but I suppose just ask your GSI for those. He tries to say some good jokes. His tests are about same difficulty or slightly higher as his mock midterms.
He is a cool guy. He made a movie about math: The Rites of Love and Math. He spent a lot of time going over the basic concepts. Just know the concepts to do well on the final. I just read the text book. My GSI was cool.
His homework and suggested review problems are an accurate reflection of his tests, but lectures are SO slow because he VERY THOROUGHLY explains everything. I just couldn't stay awake in lecture, so I stopped going. However, I would love to take any upper division class with him, because of how clearly he explained concepts, both tough and easy
His lectures were very clear in their explanations, but sometimes he spent so much time making sure that something was clear that lecture felt slow. Discussion sections are more helpful, if you have a good GSI. Tests were standard. Frenkel is a very sharp dresser.
I watched him online for Calc 3 (multivatiable). The way he explains is very detailed and clear. Thank you sir.
Terrific at imparting difficult concepts, which makes everything else easy. An outstanding teacher.
I enjoy watching him from afar. His extracurricular activities stimulate me in ways I never thought possible.
By far the best Math professor I've had at Berkeley!!! Very fair exams that you can ace if you study... First Math class I actually enjoyed and didn't feel too stressed about. TAKE HIM!!!
exceptional teaching. The teacher is very lax. Go to office hours. He explains exceptionally well.
I watched online after taking this course at my college. He's very good at explaining some concepts but in the videos at least, he makes mistakes often whereas my professor had an outline she consistently went off and she never made mistakes. Would go to him for harder math courses for sure! (Plus he's hot!)
Very thorough in instruction, but spends way too much time in simple concepts, and as a result, class is extremely boring. I did not need to learn single variable calculus in such depth in a multivariable calculus class. After the first week or so I stopped going and just read the book, which worked well.
UCD student here, Frenkel's the only reason why I understood anything and did well in my Multivar class.
He is simply awesome! very interesting classes! Thanks!
The best professor I had met
He open a door to math for us. And he is really a kind guy.
He is the most sweet prof , and anyone loves him
Overrated professor, all charm and little substance. Tends to repeat himself on simple topics, spent too long on basics and ended up speeding through hardest parts like Jordan Canonical Form. Only covers easiest concepts in lecture- read the book! Explanations also sometimes very muddled, overuses metaphor. Very willing to help and sweet during OH.
Very overrated professor. Spends way too much time on the basics of each concept, and not enough time on the concepts necessary to do the homework, so I didn't bother going to lecture since it was such a waste of time. Fortunately, his test problems are exactly like the homework problems, so if you do the homework you're set.
Overrated. Doesn't seem prepared for lecture, talks to the chalkboard, and only spends time on basic concepts, forcing students to learn most of it on their own. He's also not very available to students and doesn't help much when reached out to. Tests are a huge part of your grade- he doesn't collect homework so all that counts are tests/quizzes.
Great Professor overall. People are saying he spent too much time on basic concepts. With that being said, if you learnt the basics, you learnt the real stuff.
Frenkel explains topics very clearly, but usually spends too much time on the basics and digresses, and may refer you to the textbook to learn the formulas. Most of his lectures are more abstract than concrete, so doing the homework is necessary. (for fall 2016) Grades based on your ranking in the class from 2 exams and 8 best (of 10) quizzes.
VERY overrated professor. If you are like me and have no background in multi, then DO NOT take this professor. I put in a lot of effort and time in this class and still ended up failing. Went to his OH once and was a bit rude.
His lectures are funny but a little slow and he covers only the surface of things. I eventually stopped going to his lectures and used the book and GSI OH exclusively. The class is completely based on exams. 20% quizzes, 50% final, 30% midterm. There are no easy points. Know how to do all the problems on the tests. They are usually straightforward.
He is awesome!!! Loved him! Strongly recommend.
Terrible, overrated professor who cannot teach. Simply regurgitates the textbook. Very harsh grading policies and exams that are not indicative of what is taught in lecture. Unflexible with no regard for the student.
Most lecturers just tell the students turn right here, turn left here ... without first giving the whole map as a GPS system does. But Edward Frenkel first gives the student the whole picture and I like that very much. Well the guy appreciates the Langlands program and I see the implication of this appreciation in his lectures too.
Great professor, has good attention to details, enjoys teaching the conceptual side of math to give students a strong understanding of the material
Talks about fundamentals way too much during lecture (once spent 45 min graphing cos2x in class). Your grade is only based on tests (quizzes, one midterm, and 50% final) so homework doesn't count. Didn't cover the last four sections due to bad pacing, made us self-study during dead week, and those four sections made up the whole (difficult) final.
Horrible overrated professor. Spends way too much time on the basics rushed through the last 4 sections and tested us fully on them on the final. He also lied about the difficulty of the final and said it would be as difficult as the homework.
The lecture's were almost useless. He spent a good deal of time reviewing something completely trivial (a big chunk was on how to do single variable calculus) and he completely rushed through any new, more complicated material. You were left self-learning almost the entire course.
He spends about an hour going over general concepts and proofs and then speeds through everything else in half an hour. Your GSI and your self-learning abilities are really what your grade depends on. However, the materials and exam questions are not difficult if you actually do and understand all/most the homework problems he assigns.
Great professor
The best math professor! I don't know why people do not come to his lecture which is so inspirational and thoughtful. He does not only give you an idea about the textbook but also show you a totally new understanding towards math world. And if you do the homework, easy A.
Math 53 has revived my joy for math after a horrible run with math 10A/B. Many reviewers claim that he goes too slow, but I believe that Prof Frenkel does so to rebuild how students approach math: math as something malleable and meaningful, not simply a set of algorithms. This is reflected in his final, which tests your critical thinking skills.
He is nice, and personably. But he is useless as a lecturer, he went over so much of MATH54 that he didn't give us insight into this material. He spent so much time talking about the plane it was ridiculous! Tough grader, even if you have the correct idea, one small error and you get a zero. Right or wrong only, no partial credit for understanding.
Professor Frenkel is a Mathematical genius, and he is super nice as a person. Some people might find him hard to follow during lecture, but that's because he is very passionate about the subject and wants to explain everything from his perspective. Students complain because the material is hard but other than that he's an excellent professor.
Frenkel is phenomenal! Beware his lectures are slow in the beginning but they are so useful and so many people stopped going early on and didn't go, they brought the curve down because of it. If you go to all the lectures, discussions, and actually do all Hw. you will get an A, no question. His lectures are clear and concise, great professor!
He is a clear lecturer thoroughly explains the material. He goes slowly, sometimes at the cost of not being able to fit as much into a lecture as I would have liked. He assigns a lot of homework, which was not for a grade -- though you should do it if you want to succeed in the course. Tests are very fair, nothing unexpected.
His lecture is pretty slow in the beginning, but we missed nothing at the end. It is interesting to see him being so passionate about the subject and trying to get us the intuition about the topics. He is a great professor! We are only being graded by tests and quizzes while there is no mandatory homework for this class. Self control needed hahaha
A transparent and fair professor who is passionate about explaining the underlying essence of and design decisions in mathematics. Lectures are clear and quite easy to follow, however, some topics are covered tantalizingly slowly. Unfortunately does not reveal mistakes made in final.
Overrated Prof. His lectures are useless so the best method is to self-study.
LOVE FRENKEL!!!!
Prof. Frenkel doesn't know what's important and not important in lecture. He'll go off on random math tangents for a full hour, or regurgitate the textbook at a fantastically slow pace. Reading the book and asking questions in discussions is your best bet to doing well in the class; lectures are useless. Avoid taking if you learn from lectures.
Everyone at Berkeley likes to say Math 110 is the "easiest" upper div math course, which makes the stigma and pressure far greater than it already is. Professor Frenkel is well respected in his field and is very knowledgable about the topics he is talking about, I cannot deny that. Yet, he has no empathy for any of his students and is atrocious.
Very friendly guy and is clearly passionate about the material. I learned most of the class from the book and youtube, but I have nothing bad to say about his lectures. I just prefer to learn on my own time. About 90% of the quiz questions were definitely reasonable. The homework was really difficult and there isn't much guidance. Exams not bad.
As other people have mentioned, it's clear through his lectures that he's very passionate about what he does. Most of the course is based on exams, but they're pretty fair, especially since some of the problems are just taken from the homework. Overall, he's one of the better professors I've taken a class from.
Homework is not graded and there is a 15 minute quiz every week, which takes away time from discussions. Lectures don't always relate to what you need to know for the class and aren't that helpful for homework but Frenkel clearly loves math and he's great to listen to. Tests aren't too hard if you stay on top of homework.
only thing i can complain about this dude is that his grading is PRETTY strict ... i screwed up on a computation prob on the mt by writing 1 instead of 2,and got 3/10 on it(the procedures were all correct).however, test probs were basically either THMs from the book,or from the HUGE amount of hw he gives. do them and you shud be fine. curve not bad.
Very passionate and wants students to succeed and enjoy math. Homework can be high as this was an honors class.
I liked his lectures. He tries to show you a little bit of what's to come or what cool things can be done with the material on the syllabus. Homework load was extremely heavy some weeks and annoyingly so because the problems were easy, but the "fun" problems on the homeworks turned out to be very similar to the final, so you gotta do it.
GREAT BECAUSE HOMEWORK AND LECTURE WAS OPTIONAL. I barely did either and still got an A+ bc too goated. Infinite praise for the flexibility. Feedback: he put questions from the practice final onto the actual final; could you really not come up with new ones? And I wish final exam scores were released rather than hidden; I always value transparency.
Decent guy but not a good lecturer at least for someone whose 1st upper division math is this class. Proof heavy. Lectures and homework optional. Weekly quizzes and heavy weight on the midterm and final exam. Super hard exams that were actually not like the practices, which the gsis said it would be.
A little bit of an eccentric individual - a lot of lecture time was spent on strange tangents instead of linear algebra. But the quizzes/midterm were reasonable, the final was hard but the course as a whole is manageable. He does seem like a pretty nice guy too.
Great professor and even greater cinema. Solid lectures if you are interested in seeing how math connects to different stuff. Legendary tangents. Weekly quizzes are straightforward from the homework, and the practice exams are very close to what appears on the actual exam + a couple homework-level difficult problems, and results from lecture.
The grading is really lenient. Frenkel just that guy what can I say... Honestly if you put in an effort (more than I did) this class should be an A. I didn't go to lecture much or discussion, so I'd recommend going to both and maybe even office hours. Homework questions are harder than quizzes, so if you can do HW you should do aight on quizzes.
Frenkel is a very engaging lecturer, a talented actor, and a fantastic musician. He gives weekly quizzes and practice midterms/finals which were very similar to the midterm but significantly easier than the final. Overall he is a great professor and loves connecting the class to QM, so if you're interested in physics I would highly recommend.
Homework optional but you should definitely do it, midterms and finals were very difficult and lectures are hard to follow. Very lenient grade bins and he makes it super hard to fail his class. If you read the textbook before lecture and actually do the hw- you'll be so fine.
Great professor, lecturers are engaging and interesting. The weekly quizzes follow directly from the book and homework and feel quite fair, and exams closely mirror practice exams (which he posts on canvas) and homework/quiz problems. He holds regular office hours, and is generally quite accessible. Course feels streamlined and well-structured.
I literally did nothing and got a B. I failed the midterm and probably the final too so it's easy to pass. Quizzes are fairly hard and lectures are god awful. Homework is tedious. If you want to do well, do the homework and go to lecture since exam problems are random things he covers in class and homework, which is ridiculous to know all of that.
Frenkel is an amazing mathematician and person. Legendary lectures on not just lin alg but logic, physics, philosophy. 20% take-home quizzes, 30% midterm, 50% final. Easy to pass, moderately hard to excel. He has a contagious passion for math. Highly recommend going to OH and connecting with him. Also dunks on CS/AI hypers which I appreciate.
I deeply regretted taking Math 110 with this professor since his lecture is unorganized and hard to follow. To be clear, I got a A+ in Math 104 and A in 113, but this course is just impossible for you to actually learn linear algebra. Even regardless of the grade itself, it DOES NOT PREPARE ME for my future courses that requires linear algebra.
Lectures were usually engaging + straightforward. Midterm seemed fair (although mean was 50%), much harder final. Never released final exam grades/stats. Weekly 2-question quizzes were good practice. Grading fully based on quizzes and exams (HW optional, ungraded). He sometimes got carried away with physics and philosophy questions in lecture/OH
