This teacher is pretty cool. All his lecture notes are on his website so you dont have to go to class. You turn in homework about once a week online and its multiple choice. Dont let yourself get carried away with missing class because you will be lost.
worst teacher
Overall he is a fair teacher. The notes are ready to print in his class website. all works are through the internet (((online))). The problem is that his tests are sooooo hard.
Everything is online. NOBODY attends class because of low motivation which ultimately makes this a hard class.
his tests are crazy. and no one goes to class cuz everything is online.
His tests are difficult, problem sets due every week, multiple choice.Dont buy the book, waste of money, all of his notes are on the website and are pretty detailed.Alot of students dont come to class because all the material is online, going is helpful
lecture notes are online... he explains things pretty clearly... just people become lazy to come to class because the notes are online... thats why some people find it a hard class but its not..
He does a poor job at explaining his lectures and making them easy to understand. Not too difficult of a class, however it is tough to stay on top of material bc class is so boring. Tests are not too difficult if you go over his lecture notes.
The tests are fairly easy, study off the problem sets. Homework is assigned every week, try to keep on top of it. The subject is hard and the teacher doesn't do a good job explaining, he just reads off the lecture notes that are online.Hard class!!
He's horrible. I'm a straight A student and still find his class extremely difficult because he doesn't help you out at all. His notes online are straight out of the book and are 7-10 pgs. why not just read the chapter?? avoid him at all costs.
He is so hard to learn anything from. He reads directly from the lecture notes and gives you no new info to try to learn, sometimes I wonder if he even knows what he's talking about. Mistake to sign up for his class, let alone go to it.
He is a good teacher and one of the best in the ECON department. Most people do not come to class b/c the lecture notes are on-line. That is why most find the class hard. However, it is not that bad if you attend class.
I hated this class. It was so boring, and i couldn't barely sit through it!
He's a good teacher. Just remember that ECON is not an easy subject and go to class. If you do that you'll be fine.
The worst teacher, and teacher is the wrong word to use. He does not teach, nor does he seem to know what he is talking about. His tests are hilarious. If you want to teach yourself, take him. If you need guidance don't.
The funk is a pretty weird guy...he seems pretty uncomfortable in front of the class. He knows what he's talking about but the class is so boring that its hard to stay focused. I got an A in the class without a whole lot of effort, but I had to teach myself everything. Study for the tests...
Boring class. Doesn't explain things very well, which is something that you need in econ. Sat up close in the lecture hall, but didn't make a difference. Would suggest taking another instructor if you are not strong in econ.
Ed teaches fast yet effectively. He explains well and is very organized. The class webpage is very helpful in general. If you know econ 100 you will be fine in econ 101. His exams accurately reflect problem sets. GO TO CLASS even though the lecture notes are online.
Funkhouser's lectures are very boring but, his class is not that hard if you GO TO CLASS and do the problem sets. A lot of people do not go to class so they find it hard. Dont be fooled, even though he puts all of lectures online he doesnt fully explain them until he talks about them in class this i
I had to drop this class after the first week. This guy expects way too much like his class is the only class. Everyone in the class has a blank stare when hes talking because he is not clear at all and just expect u to know what he is talking about right off the bat. PICK A DIFF TEACHER IF POSSIBLE
Exams were easy enough to pass with a B. He keeps U somewhat busy with assigments but he's an easy grader except for the 1st week. He's hella' nice.Lecture is going over the notes so if u study the notes u dont need to go to class, but if u do u will do a little better on the exams.Would Take again!
Very easy class if you do the problem sets, which are online and straight out of the book. Should be a breeze for anyone remotely interesting in economics.
this guy is NOT a teacher. He simply repeats himself for the entire class and sticks completely to his notes posted online. Boring!
He's a nice guy but his lectures are boring. As long as you study the notes and do the problem sets you should be fine. And the Final is cumulative.
freaking terrible teacher, youll have to endure a whole semester's of worthless lectures. he just simply does not know how to teach. when someone askes him a question, he gives some bulls**t reply that doesnt even come close to making sense. he should quit and find a new job. i wouldve done better if i had learn from a bum offa the streets.
THIS CLASS SUCKS! The lectures don't even help, he talks WAY too fast and sometimes likes to stray from what he's talking about. I even e-mailed him for help, but his answers were unclear. I don't like economics, so if you don't either don't his class. It's HARD!
His exams are tough and do not come from the material presented in class. Do not take him!!
class is boring FO SHO (for sure). However, if you do the problem sets AND study your mistakes you should do well. TO GET AN A: show up to class because he explains (not well, but he tries). TO GET AN A: do problem sets. TO GET AN A: review AND UNDERSTAND old tests and problem sets before each test. NOT 2 MUCH 2 ASK, maybe an hour or two per week!
Notes posted on-line and can post questions on-line. Pretty easy if you're good at teaching self, but sometimes he can get confusing. I thought he was easy, but other find him very difficult.
if you can, go elsewhere!
Econ is not at all and easy topic. But Funky tries to explain his material. There is homework every week that is due online, so this can help u to practice the material. Not a bad teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!! he is very confusing and his tests are hard...i studied for every test, reviewed the homework and still ended up with a bad grade...he really should not be teaching
super easy class. buy the book and dont go to lectures. best 5 of 6 tests. people that go to class tell me he cancels class all the time. i got a B and didnt buy the book until the 5th test. good if you dont want to go to class, but you do have to study
this teacher is boring. not funny and not interesting. his class is just straight up lectures,(on the overhead) and sometimes when students ask him question, he doesnt know the answer, but he acts like he does and just says something else. the test questions were confusing.
The class is straight forward, read and do the homework and you will pass the class. Although he is boring. Has sample tests on Beach Board to study from. Homework every week, 3 tests, and a final.
i think this class is really straight forward and not too difficult. the professor gives us the info and we take the test, basic stuff.
BORING BORING BORING...
Awesome teacher! Knows how to teach and knows his material. Very helpful when needed.
very smart teacher. knows what he is talking about and really puts forth excessive effort to teach and be fair in doing it. the one teacher i found at csulb to be really fitting of what a college professor ought to be. if you want an easy A, slack off and not learn anything class, then dont take him. if you want a real college experience, he's it
Good Teacher. print out notes from his website, but you still need to come to class, theres alot of extra info in lecture. 4 tests & a final with 25-50 MC questions and a graph essay part. old tests on website. dont need the book. may look like you can slack off but DONT. easy class if you work at it and come to lecture. makes every effort to help.
I'm sure he is very educateed in the material, but he is not a very effective teacher. In his defense, it is very difficult, in my opinion, to teach this subject in a lecture (150+ students) environment. Would suggest taking another teacher if you can, or better yet, go to a JC and transfer the credit.
horrible class. the topic is just boring in itself, he speaks a mile a minute, doesn't understand anyone's questions, gets angry if people don't answer his questions that make no sense because the answer involves making up numbers from your ass. very ineffective teacher! doesn't curve, doesn't give ec, homework every week, just horrible!!
Go to class, do the homework, you'll be fine. Posts previous tests online
Tough subject material but he is a good professor. Just print out his lecture notes, go to class and know how to draw the graphs for the test. It's a hard class no matter what, but if you pay attention and do the homework, you can get an A. Plus, he posts old tests online which makes studying a lot easier.
he overcomplicates everything and refuses to dumb it down a little to give a more understandable explanation. the second i stopped going to class and started reading the book on my own was the second my grade started going up.
BORING! lectures suck. doesn't use any examples except pizza and chicken sandwiches. However he knows his stuff and will answer questions effectively.
Great teacher, pretty easy class. He posts full lecture notes and previous tests/answer guides which makes it easier. Just print out notes, take some additional notes in class, and do weekly Problem Sets (online). Prob Sets: 20q's a week, only have to get 12 right to get full credit. really helps reinforce things learned in class. 3 tests + final
If you show up to class and pay attention, you should do fine in his class. Book isn't really necessary, but helps out with certain material that might seem confusing. Online homework and offers lecture notes and other things online to help study for exams.
I really disliked this professer, he seems to have an obsession with pizza and hotdogs as you will see they are in almost every example he uses. I though he was very unclear and most of the time made no sense. It you don't understand SPEAK UP. I thought the book was much more clear that he was.
lectures are boring make sure to print notes from online and do ALL the online problem sets. test are hard but if you study the problem sets and his old tests you'll be fine. i never went to class and passed with an 80%. its econ....who can really make it interesting????
Pretty straight forward. He doesn't ever try to trick you, which is not normal for the Econ department. There are 5 Policy Topics whicha are super easy and can help boost your grade, and there are 3 exams. Beginning of semester is boring because it's all review, once he really gets into the subject it get really interesting.
Do not buy the book!didnt even use it once!he gives us the notes but you still need to attend class because otherwise the notes will not make any sense whatsoever! he is not very good at answering questions because he usually says "I was about to get to that but let me finish this up" and he never goes back. search for a better professor!
He is pretty good. can be boring but for the most part he tries to keep u interested. has the class using iclickers now. never uses the book. the problem sets are easy if you go to class. the tests are hard if you dont study. ima B student and im doing fine overall. id take the class again becuz im u can maintain a good grade w/o being stressed out
He holds back a little bit, He's a Harvard Grad. So not some typical average professor. When your done with his class you will know your stuff.
He is good in terms of his teaching method, only thing is that I did not ever read the book in his class. When I took this class, I'm at the majority of his office hours and from this, I learned very much and seemed like I know the materials way better than I thought. This was very interesting and I showed that I could even teach the subject myself
Not the best teacher, but def. not the worst. Pros: The class is lecture based so no need to buy the textbook, and he posts multiple copies of previous years' exams with a detailed answer key to help you study. Cons: His lecture style is not very engaging, and you only get 5 out of 20 if you turn in a hw assignment late.
Make sure to brush up on your calculus, namely derivatives, BEFORE taking this class because he assumes you already know the material and is not very good at explaining how to do derivatives. Textbook is optional, which is always a plus to me. Not sure why he insists on writing everything on the board because his handwriting is atrocious.
You'll def learn a lot in this class, but it involves a ton of reading. Some assignments involve 200+ pages of info, and you have to figure out what is relevant so you don't waste your time reading the wrong stuff. I didn't like the short time he gave us between posting the readings on his website & the due date, sometimes less than a week!
Economics was quite a difficult and tricky subject, but he makes it clear to the point of which the materials are not at all tricky or difficult to understand. If you need to take ECON 101, take him. He is the best.
The Funkhouser is the best! Just to know that at the beginning, he uses examples like Pizza Slices, Hot Dogs, and Chicken Sandwiches when talking about substitute goods. He makes the subject clear to the point that I find it not to be tricky at all, making the course very understandable. I totally enjoyed taking this class with him!
his lectures are really clear just boring. grades attendance by doing iclicker problems during lecture. review the old tests he posts online and ull do pass the test.
He's a decent teacher; study the practice tests and you'll be good. his lectures are kind of boring and the graphs are a lil difficult to comprehend, just make sure you do the online homework ahead of time- reference all the lecture notes!
ECON 101-His econ class was pretty difficult--though its not the easiest material he could have taught it better.he was very unclear and was difficult to approach. iclicker sessions every class count for grade, problem sets weekly. hard to focus.
Funkhouser was a pretty great instructor. His first two exams are the easiest, the third is a little harder, and the final is cumulative so that gets pretty tough. All notes are online and the book is helpful when you don't understand lecture. Weekly homework, and Iclicker use. Overall good instructor.
You don't use the book, so coming to class is vital. Put genuine thought into the outline, but when you get to the test you need to expand on your thoughts or provide more insight to those thoughts to get a decent grade. He's smart & trying his best to bring it down to level of the CSULB student, his way of being nice, I think. (>.<)
Funkhouser is pretty awesome. He is a little socially awkward but if you're a student that communicates with the prof, then you're good. Tests are almost verbatim his study guides/class notes. Uses the iClicker every class meeting. No extra credit. Final is the only tricky one, mainly because its cumulative, other than that, awesome class.
terrible confusing notes. he makes his graphs on microsoft paint and they are very sketchy. the way he words his questions are more confusing than necessary. i STRONGLY recommend avoiding this teacher, worst teacher i have ever had in college.
iClicker sessions for almost every class! But you get to miss 3 iClicker sesh. 4 tests. Last test is cumulative. The practice tests that he posts online are helpful. He mumbles and his notes are confusing. I would avoid picking this class but if you're desperate than go for it.
Real easy class. He puts up multiple tests from previous years as a test review. Homework is online and easy. Gives extra credit on test depending on how bad the class does. You can easily get an A by doing homework, going to class and reviewing the notes and problem examples. 3 mid terms and a cumulative final.
irritating. couldnt understand him. talked too fast. impossible to follow his explanations of different concepts. no way to prepare for exams. he always changes up the way he expects you to derive an answer. no matter how much i studied exams were always impossible. definitely do NOT recommend.
His class was structured pretty well - follow the notes, do the online homework once a week, and review for the exam. However, his practice exams were a lot different than the 3 tests and the final. I would not recommend him.
I attended all of his classes, took extensive notes, and did his practice tests. However, when taking the 3 exams and final the practice tests didn't seem applicable. I regret taking his class. I would not recommend it.
Professor asks the class if you have any questions and is skeptical when you don't have any. The only reason my whole lecture hall didn't ask any questions is because either 1. They thought they knew the material, didn't and failed or 2. Didn't know what to ask. Avoid if possible, thank me later :)
Ok. This guy definitely knows what he's talking about, he can just speak a bit fast at times. He gives you previous exams (with answers) to study from. If you go to class and take at least 1/2 decent notes, you don't even need the book. USE THE PAST EXAMS to study and the class is cake.
very intelligent and knows what hes talking about but material is hard to follow sometimes and his handwriting is messy. class is somewhat mandatory because you use an i-clicker to answer questions everyday. hes a chill teacher and will answer any question you ask. i recommend him!
He posts notes so don't even bother getting the book. He also talks really fast so keep up because he'll refuse to slow down even if you ask him to. He posts old exams online but the material in class is not relevant to what is on the midterm. I would avoid him if possible....
really good professor, easy class. Just show up in the class and do few simple questions. You don't need listen the whole class, review the notes he give and do the past paper he post online, you will be fine. 3 midterm, 1 final and couple homework, all MC. really easy! make sure study before the exam, you will get A like me! :)
AVOID!!!! He's a nice guy but he talks way too fast, not really any help at all, & the HW & test are way completely different from the class. I would not take this person.
One the best professors that I have taken so far at CSULB. His notes are meticulous. They explain the basics very clearly. You'll still need to come to class because in order to know how to apply the concepts to different situations. Extremely helpful during office hours. Very lenient grader. Math part might be difficult for some.
he talks really fast during class and rambles on and on all class. The homework starts off pretty straight forward but then has nothing to do with what he says in class. I dont recommend him but if you get him just make sure you understand the problem sets and you should be okay.
Teacher can be frustrating at times. offers alot of points in homework and it should be your'e friend. Tests are difficult but graded very fairly. Doesn't use book at all so don't bother buying it. Have an 83% going into the final.
Honestly show up to class and make sure you review his previous midterms before each test. Also do all of his problem sets since they do en up being worth alot towards the end and you should be fine. Entered final with 93% hoping for an A
Worst professor I've had in my four semesters at CSULB. He would talk about the main points quietly and quickly, point at his examples a few times, and then expect everyone to retain everything. He would often rudely reply that students should listen more if someone asked a question. His class is the only C I've ever received in college. AVOID.
Easy B, kinda gotta work for an A. His grading is fair. Do the practice exams! His homework is damn near necessary as it is exactly what you will see on the tests, and it is worth a large amount. Just like Econ 100, it is a class full of axioms that build on themselves with a bit of logic necessary.
I don't understand why his rating is so low. Yes, he talks really fast but he posts up lecture notes beforehand and everything else you need (past midterms/finals and answers) to learn and pass the class with a decent grade, so don't bother getting the book. Show up to class and review the notes, problem sets, and past exams and it's an easy A.
He is such a sweetheart, very much enjoyed his wry sense of humor. Don't bother buying the book because you don't use it that much, the class is pretty easy to understand if you review the lecture notes beforehand.
He is just straight up not a good teacher.... its cool that all of his assignments and lecture notes are online but during class its hard to learn with him talking so fast. his final was nothing like anything he gave us to study off of sooo BEWARE.
show up, do the problem sets, review the practice exam, listen and ask questions. if he doesn't know you are having a hard time, how can he help you?
Funk is the homie, you will get the grade you deserve based on your effort for econ 310.All you econ 101 students, c'mon it's an easy class don't blame the professor. Funk is very clear and will repeat himself when ever asked, does not assign a lot of h/w. Pay attention and ask question, but most importantly show up! Does cough a lot, UENO
Great professor, better than expected. He has the method of explaining the subject matter to the way of which it is not at all tricky. Sometimes in some of the concepts of supply and demand or the indifference curves portion, he uses bacon and sausages in his examples. Wonder if such and such would be if an ECON professor with the name Bacon would.
He's actually a good professor. I advise you not to fall behind. Keep up because he goes quick. His midterms are a lot like the problem sets so get familiar with problem sets and the clicker questions. Attend class!
Class is really dull. You go. You look at powerpoints. You leave. He does an okay job at explaining concepts and tests do require adequate amounts of studying. He posts past exams online to practice. However, he does try to trick you in reversing what you practice so many times.
he's a nice guy but please stay away from him. He doesn't explain anything, all he does is read off the power point very very FAST. The book didn't even help.
He's talks fast, but he's explains the material clearly. He has past exams that you can simply memorize and get a very easy A on the class since he recycles most of the questions except for current events. His lecture notes are all you need for that class. I ended up getting 95.5% in the class without using the textbook.
He was an okay teacher. If you want to understand his notes you HAVE to go to class since they're (most of the time) a different language. The best way to get an A in the class is to do at least 3 or 4 of the old test the nightweekend before. I found a free PDF of the textbook online (after I bought the book(ugh)) and I used it for problem sets
People seem to think he is a hard teacher. I am not an Econ major and I still loved this class! He always brings up topics that have happened very recent! Our final had a question about something that happened earlier that day in the news! Don't worry, you don't have to keep up on the news he will explain it!
Overall the class was not bad. Just go to lecture and follow his powerpoints and you should be fine. You don't need the book. He puts his past exams on his website so it is a good way to prepare for his exams. Also his problem sets for each week were very helpful. He is not that harsh of a grader.
Worst teacher ever. I enjoy economics, but his lectures make the class seem much harder than it actually is. His problem sets are questioned vaguely. He is a very smart professor, but teaches poorly, speaks too fast, and lacks clarity.
Funkhouser is an awesome professor. What you need to know: Go to class (he will have iclicker for participation) and follow along the lectures and you will be solid(he's not too boring so you'll be fine). The material itself is not difficult at all you will have to understand the concept he presents. Take him
I never enjoyed econ or even thought I would have to take it again. I started the class fearing I would fail or barely pass with a C. If you print out the notes and follow along during lecture, you should not be failing! He explains the concept very well even if its not interesting. Don't sweat the homework. Test is simple if you pay attentioned.
VERY CONFUSING IF YOU DON'T KEEP UP. DON'T MISS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO PASS. GIVES YOU PROBLEM SOLUTIONS DUE EVERY WEEK. I WOULD NOT TAKE HIM AGAIN. HE DOESN'T DELIVER THE MATERIAL VERY WELL.
Expect to write a lot in this class. Being a Harvard grad the professor will assign papers that will test your research and writing abilities. His assignments will not be your standard run-of-the-mill stylized works, instead he encourages his students to take a more unique approach when assessing the articles he assigns. Exams are to be expected.
2 Exams 10 Papers 1 Research Paper Midterm & Final VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD. If you do all the assignments and show up to class I guarantee at least a B-. Papers He's really clear. Read a couple articles and then give YOUR OPINION on the case. Final Paper: Start Early and ask for feedback early HONESTLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE CLASSES. MADE ME GROW
Funkhouser is a really good lecturer and he knows what he is talking about. I took him for Advanced Micro and I got a B in his class. He explains things really well and he definitely knows what he's talking about. He's super friendly too! So you should definitely take him for upper division econ classes. 0:3
Great, caring guy professor. His lectures are slow and mellow so you should not have a hard time understanding the subjects. He is helpful and is willing to review your papers to make sure you understand what is going on. He is not a tough grader but he does expect you to make logical arguments in the papers & exams. Take him!
Funkhouser is a good professor. Workload: weekly problem sets that are few hours long ps I don't see why so many undergrads take this class (note it's a shared section with econ 510). Advanced micro is relatively calculus/math heavy for an undergrad so I wouldn't recommend it unless you are Math Econ option and perhaps thinking about grad school.
I highly recommend sitting next to someone so you can work out the clicker questions together (they can get confusing). Overall he does try to explain and clarify everything. It's easy to get lost in his lectures if you don't pay attention and zone out. Past midterm/final exams are posted, so practice them as much as you can!
He has notes for all his lectures, homeworks, and exams available online. He isn't vague about what to practice for the exams. He wants you to do well. What else can you ask for. He lectures on the concepts and then teaches you the equations to complete the problems, unlike some other econ profs at CSULB. No nonsense!
Funkhouser is a very fair prof. You don't need the book but you do have to buy a clicker because you do them every class. Study the notes and do the problem set questions, they help for exams. If you email him he will reply to you quickly. He posts study guides and they help for exams. He does talk fast but concepts are fairly easy. I RECOMMEND
Really great professor. Really describes things clearly. Kinda tends to jump around the board a bit when working through problems. Exams are questions taken directly from the HW and notes. Not a lot of homework. Definitely easy to pass. Would highly recommend him. Really cares about his students understanding. Does lots of examples in lecture.
Love this guy... He's a smart and mathy guy, really enjoyed his class. Took him over the summer and despite the difficult nature of the course (given the short time span), I feel like I learned a lot thanks to this professor.
Econ is already hard, having it in a huge lecture with a professor who doesn't always understand student questions is tough.
His lecture is easy to understand but sometimes he might go quite fast. Having someone next to you to do the clicker questions is highly recommended. He does provide previous midterms and finals beforehand, practicing them is really important if you want to get an A. Overall a great and fair professor. Take him!!
He gives examples in class and also provides them online. You need to study and practice in order to do well. The HW and old tests help for the exams, they will not be the same so you need to understand the material. Ask questions, redo all HW, study all old tests.
Funkhouser knows how to do the work... unfortunately that is not very helpful for students. He is a perfect example of someone that is an expert that has no idea how people actually learn. Sure, he gives you examples and practice questions... but he speeds through the lesson asking "Everyone got that?" and then moves along.
Very hard professor. Must go to class every day and attend clicker sessions, which are basically mini quizzes . Be prepared to be very stressed every day you're in that class. You must do good on the clicker sessions to get a good grade. Tests are very hard, not many questions are directly from problem sets and clicker sessions. You MUST study.
All i have to say is AVOID THIS GUY! Toughest teacher ever, gives no extra credit, tests are very hard. MUST ATTEND CLASS - CLICKER SESSIONS. These sessions suck and count against your grade by a lot. You must study a lot in this class in order to even get a "C." Better yet go take this class somewhere else online or another professor.
Grade is based upon 10 Problem Sets (20pts each), 2 midterms (100 pts each), and a Final(200pts). Professor is trash. Doesn't know how to teach. Adequate understanding of Fundamentals in Calculus is a must because he WILL NOT teach it to you he will assume u know it. Problem sets are graded based on accuracy. STUDY THE OLD MIDTERMS he provides
take this class online or at a CC bc this prof cant teach clicker sessions count against your grade skims over lectures has examples but his explanations dont go in depth on why the answer is the answer you pretty much have to teach yourself so save yourself and avoid this guy Went to office hours once&got annoyed with my questions dropped
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! HE IS THE WORST ONE I'VE EVER SEEN! TESTS ARE EXTREMELY HARD. STAY FAR AWAY! DOES NOT TEACH AND IS RUDE WHEN YOU ASK QUESTIONS, VERY CONDENSING. IF YOU WANT TO FAIL OR GET A C THEN TAKE HIM BY ALL MEANS! FRESHMEN - YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. LIKE I SAID STAY AWAY! TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE INSTEAD
He's well intentioned & he DOES want you to pass. He grades more based on effort & the exams mirror what he gives you on the homework problem sets. He's quick in lecture but they're posted online, as well as hw w/ the answers later too. Come to lectures w/ notes printed, review those & the problem sets w/ the correct answers & you'll pass.
Kinda boring lecturer but he means well. Pay attention and go to class because the clicker question points add up. If you fall asleep in class everyday you wont pass.
Funkhouser taught the entire class using slides. I definitely could have applied myself more, however he is most likely the 1st or 2nd worst professor I had my freshmen year. Funkhouser isn't a bad guy, he just makes no effort to verify that his students are actually learning the information that he's teaching.
I was skeptical at first because he had really low reviews; however, his class is not bad. I wouldn't necessarily say he is good at teaching, but the class itself is not too hard. He posts all his old tests online, so STUDY those: The same questions appear on your midterms. Just review your notes and practice old tests, and you'll get an A.
He's a nice guy but will not offer office hours. He will not record synchronous sessions. Be prepared to use email to ask all your questions. If your math skills aren't strong, don't take this course, he doesn't write out the steps. I'm almost 100%, but this class is draining because it's so difficult to decipher his youtube videos.
I took this course during the pandemic and it really isn't too bad. The content started to get a bit harder after the second midterm and he could have explained things better, but I understood the concepts after doing a lot of his practice tests. Overall, he teaches well and he's an easy grader when it comes to short answer questions. I recommend
This is my third class with him(110, 310 and 410). Solid Professor. His class grading format is 10 problem sets and 3 tests normally and he posts all past midterms and finals for you to practice. Class is boring so I skipped A LOT but as long as u can figure out the problems sets, you will prob do fine on the test.
Super strict on deadlines & time limits, doesn't seem to care much about his students or teaching. Can be rude and abrasive, expects you to basically teach yourself (online). Cost me my 4.0 GPA just because he refused to be flexible rather than a true lack of understanding of the material. Should be more considerate of the challenges students face.
I am a senior finishing my final semester and taking this course to complete my credential. Avoid this man like the plague, like he has COVID. His archaic website (refuses to use Beachboard) and uninformative lectures will leave you trying to teach yourselves on Discord. Grade determined by a series of quizzes called problem sets and 3 exams.
He got his Ph.D. at Harvard. I don't think he really understands that CSULB students are not on the same level. Very simple: submit late - fail, make mistakes - fail. Just do everything you are asked to do on time and make sure you do it right and you get an easy A. Don't fall behind.
Prof. Funkhouser is a solid choice as long as you work well in a nearly asynchronous course. His lectures are straight to the point (all online), and homework (and even exam) answers are easy to find. He grades very quickly and you have a good idea of how you do in his class throughout the semester.
My advice is to make some friends in the class discord sever, and make some study group dates. I would say to have 2 study sessions. You should go over 2 or more previous midterms/finals. As well, make a study sheet together (open-book!). Most importantly, write down the lecture slides on a google doc first before going through the lecture videos.
Hes okay, his class does consists of a lot of studying and preparing for exams. Some things can be a bit confusing but he does answer questions as best he can. He doesnt use BeachBoard, instead uses another website for his class which is a bit confusing and sometimes crashes. Make sure you show up, pay attention & check the website constantly.
Good luck. Compared to other professors it seems like he is the best option. Very difficult to comprehend material but tries his best to provide what you need for tests and problem sets (homework).
Prof. Funkhouser is an amazing teacher. Don't buy the textbook; everything you need is in the lectures. Make sure to pay attention and be engaged during class; the lectures are like a group study session. Tests are based off of problem sets and old exams; there are exams up to 2006. Class is less conceptual and more quantitative. HW worth 36%.
*clash of clans opening*
Uses iclickers, posts pasts midterms and finals. If you study the past exams, you can get a good score since most of the questions will reappear. Weekly homework is a worksheet with around 20 multiple choice questions. Has his own website, didn't use Beachboard. Lectures were chill but mandatory because of iclicker questions.
Attend class because there are a lot of clicker questions. This subject is not easy so i can not recommend going to classes/ trying on the homeworks enough. The class is not easy and requires work but definitely not impossible. Tests are basically identical to his previous ones so to study use those resources for sure
iclickers for attendance. lectures r slow but fast, not much funk to them. got through the class with the past exams he provided as a study guide. lenient grader honestly at the end of the semester. 10 questions of hw every week that did help. uses his own website so making a discord is harder. not too bad of a class but going to tutoring helped !
If you took AP econ this class shouldn't be too difficult for you. All the content you need to know for exams is provided during lectures and slideshows can be accessed later as well. Participation is measured by clicker questions, around 5 per lecture. He also provides previous exams similar to current midterms which are helpful for practice.
SO MANY typos & mistakes in lecture slides and answer keys for exams. One answer key was SO riddled with typos, suddenly switched to a totally different equation, incorrect formula. Since he doesnt explain his steps its extremely confusing- are you not getting it, or is it just WRONG bc of typos/mistakes? Better no answer key than a nonsensical one
Professor Funkhouser's class is no walk in the park, but with the right prep it's manageable. Use past exams, study groups, and tools like unstuckstudy to stay on top of the material.
