the actual class content and topics are incredibly boring unless you are a geology major. however, prof garnero tried to make it as interesting as possible. he has a sense of humor.tries to involve the class. a good teacher and easily relates to students. if you are going to take glg, take garnero.
fun guy lots of extra credit. Makes rocks fun
on the first day of class he smashed a kids cellphone wiht a rock and ate someone elses breakfast burrito. Funny guy and tons of extra credit
I'm pretty sure the cell phone smash was staged. Apparently he does it first class every semester. If it was real that would not have been cool. To early to tell yet how this guy really is...
One of the best teachers i have had. makes learning interesting. Tests are average difficulty. Grades are on a curve and tons of extra credit. There is one unanounced in class exercise a week worth 10 pts so if u like ditching classes be aware u will be losing pts, but can be made up with ex credit
Great Teacher!! even though geology is the most boring class ever...he attempts to make it fun and entertaining!!! like everyone else said...tons of extra credit!!!
He is a pretty cool guy. He makes geology as interesting as it possibily could be. TONS OF EXTRA CREDIT. There is no way you should not get an A in this class. Class can be boring but it would have been awful if he hadnt been teaching.
Awesome professor! One of the best Ive ever known. Recently awarded from university for outstanding teaching job. (:
Great teacher! You know exactly what will be on the tests and there is TONS of extra credit. Plan on going to class though because there are secret assignments and secret extra credit that is well worth the your time for the points you get. Really funny guy, he played bass guitar in our class more than once.

He's funny, and class is always interesting!
Fun class. Funny Teacher!
He knows more than anyone in the department, gives unlimited extra credit, and is able to teach the material in an interesting way. Don't take geology from anyone else at ASU!
This guy is great. He gives almost unlimited amounts of extra credit (analogies, poems, songs, field trips, secret extra credits, etc.). Don't take anyone else, I definitley recommend him. He's also really nice and professional, real down to earth. He posts all his lectures on his website, the TA is cool.
he tries to be funny and sometimes he is. it's a good idea to go to class because he does these random in class quizes that are basically free points. the hw is based on the chapter reading, so skim over that. tests, he gives you a study guide and goes over it the class before test, notes from slides mainly.
I got D's on the tests and still got a B in the class from extra credit! Go to class for the in-class assignments (free points) and to hear about the super secret extra credit! Send in analogies, go to his office before the final to look at previous tests and take notes, go on the field trips in the mornings (he brings bagels)
The class was easy as hell. The tests are hard, but extra credit allows a good grade. I was very close to an A, but pulled a B, and failed just about every test. I would recommend this class. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!
He is excited about what he is teaching, the material is straight forward, and it's an easy grade. If you have to take a science, this is the one to take. I loved every minute and he's cute too! :)
Easiest teacher ive taken at ASU. Tons of extra credit and in class CPS points. The homwork is straight out of the book and the tests are almost word for word from his study guides. He gives you 4 test and a final and of the 4 tests he drops one and the final is optional to drop another test! I got a A and didnt do any extra credit.
Very fun class. Easy-going teaching style. Tests are based on readings and emphasized with lecture. A lot of extra credit opportunities, including analogies that are read everyday and can be helpful with material.
Difficult class but well worth it. Garnero makes the class very interesting and he includes a lot of up to date material that is not in the text. Homework was difficult but he and his TA, Patty, were a great help and very approachable. Could use note page on tests so they were not hard. Need to attend every class but not hard to get an A.
Thoroughly competent and enjoyable lecturer. He makes learning difficult subjects fun. Hands down one of the best professors I've had.
Superb professor who is always accessible. He will explain anything you miss on his time or in class as appropriate. His TA and some of his grad students were attending the class, and he scaffolded advanced math concepts directly into the lessons. Supplemental materials were outstanding.
Really nice teacher, class is super boring and you have to always be there! All of his assignments are in class and if you miss it you can't make it up. Tests are difficult but he does curve most of them.
Great professor, very good at trying to make lectures entertaining. The tests were a bit hard but he provided a study guide with all of the test questions and gave out a lot of answers in class the day before the test. Tests were also multiple choice and he always curved them. I would recommend this course, awesome professor and fairly easy class.
Great professor! He was very good at trying to keep lectures clear and entertaining. He gave several homeworks and in class activities, but as long as you attend class you do well. He also gave study guides before each test that contain almost all the test questions but without answers. Very funny, I definitely recommend him.
This class is the easiest science class you can take. The professor is funny and he tells you what questions are on the exam. His in class assignments and extra credit works are easy way to gain points and the final exam is optional... You can take a total of 5 finals and chose the 3 best marks.
Ed is best teacher at ASU! He's really hot & handsome (FYI I'm a dude), and has a great sense of humor. The last 2 exams are optional and he offers a ton of extra credit opportunities. The study-guides have the exact questions on the exams. Easy A, if you put the work and effort into it. Love you Ed ;)
Awesome teacher. Very fun to take his class and I am by no means interested in Geology. I would recommend to everyone. Funny guy.
This class would be boring if any other professor was teaching it. Very easy class! He gives out so much extra credit it's impossible not to pass with an A and he gives out the test questions two days before the exam. LOVE THIS CLASS!
I went to about half of his lectures and still just barely got an A. If you got to ALL of the lectures it is a guaranteed A, because a lot of the points come from in class activities. He gives you all of the test questions two days before the tests, if you get the answers and turn them into flash cards, its impossible to fail. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Great teacher. He is funny and really easy-going. Before every exam he provides a "what-to-know" list and these are all of the questions that will be on exam. He makes such a boring topic easy to understand and bearable to listen to.
Professor Garnero is simply amazing. He is very engaging with the class and will most likely learn your name if you make a point to greet him even if it is just once. The extra credit is unlimited so if you accidentally miss a HWAssignment just relax and get yourself some extra credit.
Dr Garnero is a great professor! If you fail his class, you shouldn't be in college. Geology is a very dry subject but he finds a way to make it somewhat fun with activities and jokes. He gives you what to know lists for the test that have all of the questions that are on the test. Extra credit is always offered.
Ed is awesome! If you need to take a science class, this is the class for you! He is really clear in his expectations. Go to class because his lectures are important and he does in class exercises! No need to buy a book, lectures will be plenty for homework and exams!
Really nice guy with lots of extra credit, go to class every day because there is attendanceparticipation on about 50% of the days there is class. Gives you the questions and answers before tests, make flashcards and its impossible not to get an A!
Unfortunately I couldn't finish this class due to my disabilities, but Garnero is a wonderful professor. He's hilarious, if you plan on looking at the notes after class though online they aren't clear. Mostly just pictures and graphs. You really have to read the textbook as he doesn't go through everything in class. Lots of in class assignments too
This class is super easy. Don't even need the textbook. Just show up to class because he does in class exercises at least once a week and doesn't tell you when theyre gonna happen. The material is super easy to understand. However, this teacher is a huge jerk and is super rude. His lectures are also very poorly planned out which is kind of annoying
Dr. Garnero is a wonderful professor. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. The grade in this class is based on: 8 homeworks, 3 out of the 4 tests, 14 out of the 16 In Class Exercises. Do the analogies for extra credit. You will end up with over 100% in this class, like me. I would certainly take another class with him again
Great teacher, he has a clear and concise syllabus with the schedule of all the chapters he'll cover in class. Make sure to come to lecture because there will be pop quizzes every so often. The exams aren't difficult but read the chapters.
Great Professor and made the class much more interesting than I assumed it would be. The class itself wasn't exactly difficult as long as you showed up and were there for his quiz activities. Tests he made you an in depth review and if you can do that then you're in the clear. Overall great teacher and excellent class.
He is very funny, class was very straightforward. In class pop quizzes. Very funny professor, my favorite so far at ASU
Great teacher, very generous with curving grades. An 87% is an A in his class, 74 is a B and a 61 is a C. 8 HW assignments worth 40 points each, 4 tests worth 100 points each (he drops your lowest test score) and 16 in class assignments (drops your 2 lowest scores here). Show up to class so you don't miss in class assignments and test review days.
Garnero is a great teacher! Very funny and full of surprises. He provides a list of exactly what you need to know for the exam, so you could easily find the answers on quizlet. While you don't need to necessarily show up for class, I would highly recommend it for the pop quizzes, secret extra credit, and fun presentations, all of which are random.
I loved this professor! He was hilarious and very enjoyable. I'm not much of a science buff but he made geology interesting. The class was pretty easy, too. There are 20ish pop quizzes in the class, so attendance is important, but it was a fairly painless class. I'd definitely take him again if I had to take another geology course.
Garnero is funny and cool. His class was interesting most times. He has a vase where he'll randomly pick names during lectures to take their attendance once (10 pts) and sometimes have you do a demo for 5 EC pts. There are 16 "pop quizzes" (2 dropped) 4 exams (1 dropped) and 8 HW assignments. I totally recommend if you're looking for an easy class.
He grades in brackets, so as long as you get a certain number of points, you are thrown into the grade bracket. He is knowledgeable and funny. Makes lectures interesting. Just don't use your phone in class.
Garnero's GREAT. Have to show up for attendance but otherwise he is super funny, actually teaches but lets you check out. Assignments are easy enough, class is very easy to get an A and he has EC. You can read but you can also just not. Exams are LITERALLY A REVIEW GUIDE HE GIVES YOU it's the exact same just figure out the answers. no +/- take him!
Garnero is an excellent professor! He is hilarious and manages to make even boring topics very interesting. Make sure you show up, he has pop quizzes and will sometimes draw names of students to have them answer questions for attendance points. He also provides you with a list of all the content you need to know for tests!
Take this class if you need a science credit but don't like science. Garnero is extremely funny, caring, and straightforward about what he expects from his students. Show up to class, take good notes from his slides, and take advantage of the EASY extra credit opportunities he provides. Strongly recommend!
He was a good guy and he made the topic a lot more fun to learn about. However, a huge chunk of his test questions were stupid and revolved around info that no adult will need to know in the real world. He just seemed to think that his class was the most important, and he seemed to forget that not everyone in there is a geology major.
This class is easy as long as you do the homework! Test answers are found in the homework and lecture pdfs, and he provides a study guide with pretty much the exact questions from the test. Literally the easiest science class you can take without putting much effort into it!
Garnero is hilarious and tries making class as interesting as possible. You never know what to expect. 8 HW, 4 exams (1 dropped), plenty of EC. No + or -. If you put the effort in the first half, it's possible to obtain an A with a month to spare. I didn't show up for the last month or final and still finished with an A. Good science class to take!
Show up, do the readings, and do the homework, and you'll be done with the class a month early. He grades on points, not percentages, and the last test is dropped. You can basically get as much extra credit as you want if you try. Additionally, he's just a great professor. As someone who knew little about geology, I learned a lot.
Dr. Garnero is one of my most memorable, fun, and great professors, period. He is funny, unexpected, shocking, and completely engaging. He took what is probably perceived as a more pedestrian course, an introductory geology course, and elevated into something I found useful and inspiring, and will keep all my life.
Garnero understands that most people taking his class are not geology majors so his class is not hard at all, but he is still good at teaching the subject. He is clearly passionate about geology and cared for his students. He is a funny guy and makes a boring topic more interesting. Highly recommend his class!
Stop reading and register with this professor right away. That being said, so far Professor Garnero has been great and his lectures are so much fun even though it's about rocks. There's open note exams and he offers extra credit for everyone that shows up to class. I had him as a zoom class so in-person has got to be a lot more fun
This class was an easy A just attend class and pay attention and you'll ace your FA and exams
I literally loved this professor! He was one of my favorite professors as ASU so far, he is hilarious, loves his students and treats his TA's wonderful! I liked class strictly for the entertainment and the homework and tests are so easy, everyone should earn an easy A in this class.
Each week you have an assignment the covers that week's material. After three of those, you take a module assignment which is an assignment based on the last three week's material. No other assignments are given. Both of these are easy if you put in the effort and he has plenty of extra credit opportunities. Overall, very easy class.
Ed is the best! He incorporates humor into his lectures and tests. He knows that most of his students are in this class just for their science credit so he keeps it easy light and fun.
Fantastic dude. Cares so much about his students and wants to continuously put himself out there. He tries to engage the class as much as possible and very obviously has so much passion for his profession. Not only a good teacher but also a good person. You don't have to work very hard, and not many attend class, but it may be rewarding.
Garnero is a very good professor who will keep you engaged in the lectures even if geology is an easy/boring class for you. Interacts a lot with his front row so if you want to avoid talking or being talked to sit in the back.
Drops 2 exams and 5 quizzes! If you get called on more then once, free extra credit. Other ways for extra credit, but just showing up is easiest. His lectures are really cool and focus on the present state of the Earth/climate. He gives you the pdf of the textbook and posts his slides online. Both quizzes and exams are multiple-choice, open note.
Very sweet guy cares a lot about his subject and class. Class was not hard and the lectures were long at times but he tried his hardest to make them engaging. He likes to have fun with his lectures as much as he can so be ready in the front row. Overall great he's a nice guy.
I ended with 110% grade because of the amount of extra credits that are available in this class. Lectures were interesting and engaging to attend to. Definitely recommend if you're planning to take Geology.
Garnero is a great teacher! His class is so easy! We have weekly homies(25-50 questions) But you can find the answers pretty easily. We have MAQ tests every few weeks that are quite easy. His lectures are engaging and he's really fun overall. He offers a bunch of extra credit options, but he does randomly call names for attendance, so be in class.
One of the best professor at ASU. If you wanna take geology for boosting up your GPA, take him. You would definitely love his course material which is so so easy, I promise you. I was able to done class with A+ within the first 3 months but attended every class to do ICE which were super easy. I love you professor Garnero.
Professor Garnero is the only professor I've had where he seems like he enjoys what he is doing. Made the class easy. No electrronics are allowed in his classroom, but it honestly isnt that big of a deal. Drops 2 tests, so I didnt have to take last test and final
Class was pretty easy, just make sure to do the work. Put noticeable effort into his lectures and made them fun sometimes.
Gives a lot of EC and the the tests/quizzes are super easy, basically a free A+. The professor is also super nice and gives a lot of current world news and "motivational advice". Is really strict about laptops/cell phones during lecture time though, besides that its super chill. Does a random attendance selection from a jar every lecture.
Best professor I've had. He really promotes curiosity about the world around you so it makes the course interesting. Besides that, he makes it interesting because he's funny. I cannot say too much about the format of the class because he did mention he switched it up for this semester and that he might switch it for the next. But anyway it is easy.
Easiest class I've ever taken. Not sure if it was a one-off thing or not, but I had no midterm and no final in that class. Each week we were graded on two things: a take-home, open book/note/internet quiz, and an in-class collaborative quiz. Attendance points are a one-time grade but can be redeemed later. Take this class for easy SQ credit.
Very easy to class to succeed in, watch out for in class iclickers happening at the beginning/end of class. Canvas home assessments every week due on Sunday, no midterm or final. Rocks for jocks
Professor Garnero is an excellent lecturer; although I can't say that geology was particularly interesting to me, he found ways to keep the class engaging. Lots of extra credit, homework is relatively easy, pop quizzes in class. Also has a name jar that he pulls out of to ask questions, which I found fun but I could see why it could be a con.
I didn't study anything the whole semester and got an A+. Attendance points are negligible, but there are weekly in-class icklickers that you can take in groups, and open notes. Weekly at-home quizzes have 3 attempts, no time limit, open notes and not proctored and other than the first 2 you get the same question on all. lots of extra credit.
amazing professor, 100% would take again
Take his class! There is so many amazing things to say about Garnero. His lectures are engaging, he is very transparent on what ASU expects from their curriculum. Tons of extra credit, drops MULTIPLE lowest quiz/hw grades, changes the course to make it easier on the students. Final is only 5%. Over all amazing teacher and chill dude in general.
Very Funny, class is enjoyable. Only work is the weekly CHA's, and sometimes in class exercises, which are easy. No tests. Weekly reading material, although I never read them, should be easy enough to understand the material from the lectures, and common sense. Lots of student participation, but usually it's fun.
There's no final & does attendance by calling about 3 names every class and once he's called your name once your set for your attendance for the rest of the semester. There is random unannounced Iclickers so beware. His lectures are a bit weird and don't go into depth about geology but its an easy A.
Fantastic professor who manages to make geology extremely engaging and fun even with no prior experience.
Honestly one of the most fun professors i have had. He picks names out of a jar and if you don't show up that day when your name is called you lose out on a lot of points but the lectures and interesting enough to show up. He is pretty funny too and enjoyable to listen too. Easy A and and fun class.
Ed really loves teaching! This GLG 498/598 Geophysics class covers lots of topics, and he uses the simplest words to make you understand, think, and laugh. Every week an assignment, every class an interesting small quiz. Lots of opportunities to correct your homework and get extra credit. Don't miss it!
On Canvas, the grading is not clear, and I thought I was passing the entire time. When I got my report card, it said I failed with no explanation. When I tried to reach out multiple times, I got no response.
Nicest professor out there. He is so funny and engages with the class a lot. I loved his lectures because they were so entertaining to watch. Take him!
50 question quiz with 3 retakes and an in class questionnaire or two every week, no finals/midterms, super straight forward. Listen to lectures (which he usually makes very interesting)/ read the provided online free textbook and it's easy. Truly an interesting professor, passionate about his subject. Beware of cool free rocks! I got one :) 10/10
