Mr Miogi meets Dr No
Really nice, clear and concise. Teaches actual science.
Very helpful. Very smart and not arrogant. Honest.
Rude and moody
Dr Jeckle, Mr Hyde
Emphasizes things that he doesn't want you to know- misleading.
Pretty good prof. Can crack some cute jokes.
Work hard and be rewarded. Clear and concise lectures, great to study from.
Takes forever to get your marks back!
Good notes; not too boring; addresses issues regarding microbiology.
A nice guy, but MOODY!!

great course material, cares about his teaching, a little moody
Knows his stuff - pretty interesting.
Good prof, bad mood swings. Like the fact he admits he doesn't know.
Don't expect extra help from this guy. Told my friend to go home read textbook.
interesting teaching style....fair tests
Say what you will about Ed (moodiness etc.), he genuinely cares about students.
great prof! true- he totally cares about his students and loves his job. knows his E.coli really well too:) p.s. i've never noticed his modiness....
Good notes, really unfair and crappy tests!!
Dr. Ishiguro gives a very intersting lecture. This was the first university course I actually enjoyed! His tests were easy, but you had to study for them. I never noticed any mood swings, although I found his arrogance funny.
He's fair and the tests were easy
Although he's quite mean (or looks quite mean), I must admit that he's the best professor in our program. He's a real scientist, unlike some other profs that always talk about money.. Good lectures, clear explanation.

Nicest guy in the department and great teacher too. Hard material, but fair tests and good notes. Cares a lot for students, and looks out for their best interests
Dr. Ishiguro gives fairly good notes and makes the material interesting. However, his final last year was completely incomprehensible and vague. He did not convey what he was looking for and I still don't understand why I lost marks!
ed is a great teacher. everything he teaches is interesting and he gives good visual aids. my best teacher by far this year.
This teacher should use prozac, it 'might' get him in a better mood! He is a good prof, ut I really don't recommend him as a best friend.
his tests were copy and pasted from old exams which mad studying easy. Looks a little mean, but is quite funny and nice.
The class notes were not clear and the midterm marking was ridiculous!
He gives no notes so go to class... He should consider putting notes on the internet for people who have reading difficulties or need glasses. The course is full of facts that individually are not hard to remember but collectively suck. AWSOME LAB THOUGH!
very nice, tests were extremely fair; dont try and "weed out" students. he cares a great deal about the subjects, and his enthusiasm rubs off, this course has made me consider biochem as a major
Definitely piqued my interest in the field (unfortunately I'm graduating other wise I may have continued in Bioc), but he needs to learn some class control!!
The best prof in the Biochem/Micro department, except possibly Pearson. (Not that this is much of an accomplishment...) His lectures are interesting, and he's helpful outside of class time as well.
Not helpful at all, i asked him a question once and he made me feel stupid, not right. He is probably a good scientist but needs to work on people skills, big time. Get the chip of your shoulders ed!
He expects students to listen and drop down the things he said. He can keep my interests, and actually explains quite well. The only bad thing is he doesn't get his notes online.
Ishiguro is a good lecturer. He definately keeps you interested. The only problem is that he isn't very friendly when it comes to helping students with questions. I won't ask any questions in the class because of the demeaning way he talks to others when they ask questions.
LOVE HIM! Funny and informative.
Gives good notes, but needs to put them up on the internet for people who miss a class or two. Tries to be funny...sometimes it works, sometimes not. His tests are fair.
Very interesting and full of information. Make sure to note what he says, not just what's up on the slides!!
he expects people to know everything he talks about in lecture from previous lectures, but students need time to have the new information sink in to their head, in that sense he shows no sympathy to students and thus he is a pretty tough prof, also tricky final that lowers your mark further
He's not very helpful and can't answer questions very well. But, the course is not difficult as long as you study hard. Interesting course material.
He made this potentially interesting class not only boring but totally incomprehensible, and extremely difficult. For a class that's supposed to be intriguing and different it fails miserably all due to him.
Excellent
Easy class (you dont even need any science background because he starts from the basics) , interesting material, easy to understand. The whole no text book thing is different but he gives you all the notes he goes through in a notebook so there isnt much for writing.
Well, He is no good. I can't say bad, coz most profs are not concern about students anyways. Ishiguro doesnt let you print notes yet he sometimes rush slides. He aren't that great at pointing out main points or explaining. He doesnt answer ppls question well throu lecture. A bit arrogant, too. Maybe he's good at researching? but a terrible teacher
This class is very easy. He gives you the notes in a book she you aren't pressured to write everything done. The material is very interesting.
He was a pretty good prof - you didn't need any background in science but if you did this class was RIDICULOUSLY easy - the notebook with class notes was awsome if you had it, but he did move quickly if you didn't - however he had no qualms about telling our class about how much he hated us and how first years are immature compared to second years
Excellent
Good prof. Uses powerpoint slides for lectures, which I don't really like. Extremely cool and interesting course. Class is lots of info. but nothing really hard to understand. Study hard fore midterm - he does ~1/2 written questions, not just MC. Text necessary for reading assingments, but there's a copy of Prescott in libary.
He's clear and interesting but you have to go to class to get the important stuff
just..a weird prof, I found him more confusing than helpful
No Comments
Likes pop quizzes. Uses IClickers almost daily. More confusing than clear. Often had to be corrected. His portion of the exam was the toughest because he likes to use the "more than one of the above" or "none of the above" options a lot.
Really cares about his students. He really loves what he's teaching and it makes learning the material that much better.
Great class, made the material very interesting, no text but so you had to pay attention in class, mind you it wasn't hard to do that. Efficient way of teaching, taught concepts rather than made you memorize a text book!
Excellent prof! I've taken 3 of his classes now (Micro 200a & b, Micro 302) and have really enjoyed them. I really like how he doesn't make you memorize the textbook (Micro 302 didn't even have one). His classes are about learning the concepts, not pages and pages of trivia.
He was very interesting in lecture and asked questions that got you excited about getting into the field. He was a factor in me switching into micro. The lectures follow his own notes that you can download beforehand.
Awesome! Enthusiastic, funny, and maybe a little crazy.
Great teacher who loves his job. Test was very fair. Used exact midterm in final exam, which was strange, though. Overall, happy funny great teacher whom you learn a lot from when attending class even though notes are not taken (it really helps to listen to him in class).
Incredible teacher, very inspiring, makes learning exciting.
Somebody get this man a crown - King of Micro!
Any professor who dedicates a lecture to his dog who recently passed away HAS to be a good guy. Dr. Ishiguro will inspire you to learn. If you attend lectures, take notes, and study hard, you will be rewarded.
Awesome, brilliant, soo helpful. One of the best profs i've ever had
Laser pointer is so irritating. He flashes the thing everywhere and it's distracting. Repeats some points over and over again when everyone understood it the first time. Gets annoying. Not very interactive classes.
Great prof teaching a great class. Tests are extremely fair - just study his notes and maybe supplement them with bits and pieces from the text and tada!...it's easy to do well on the exams. Ed knows his stuff, & keeps the class interesting. Focuses on key concepts rather than details. Attend class, listen to what he says, study, and you'll do fine
Dr. Ishiguro is the best professor I have had at UVic. He makes students excited about learning, and focuses on key concepts rather than requiring you to memorize details. Extremely fair tests. Incredibly nice guy, and always willing to help, just go visit him in his office.
His lectures are informative and he is able to teach well. The only negative thing about Dr. Ishiguro is his arrogance; at times, he gets so caught up in all the great things he's done and how much more intelligent he is than other people, the actually concept is lost. Otherwise, pretty decent.
After taking my course I really don't understand why everyone likes him. He uses the same questions over and over and his exams are all details. He also has this weird head wiggle/dance thing he does when he thinks someone's question is stupid or the answer is obvious. He smiles when he does it too. It seems arrogant of him...and a bit creepy.
The material he teaches is very interesting and he is an engaging teacher. He can be condescending however and I would not recommend going to his office. Our entire class did terrible on his midterm and he blamed it on us (we did not study hard enough?) We did bad because he put material on that we barely covered or covered last semester.
Dr. Ishiguro posts the notes online, which is lovely, but it tricks you into thinking you can skip class. He tends to have some extra details to add that show up on exams. He is so far from engaging it's not even funny, especially in comparison to Dr. Pearson who teaches the other part of the course. Some aspects of the class are interesting.
Fantastic prof, very engaging! Not sure why everyone did so poorly on the midterm? It really wasn't that bad. Yes, he is a tad arrogant, but he has also been teaching the course for many, many yrs....so let him have it. GO SEE HIM IN HIS OFFICE. DON'T BE SCARED!! It really helps! And yes he focuses on details, just study hard, and deal with it.
If you can get your hands on an old exam, use it. Review 10 minutes after every class to cut down on pre-exam studying. Avoid going to his office because he is a grumpy old man. Doing well isn't impossible, but he's definitely just there to listen to himself talk about his accomplishments. And yes.. he does bobble his head.
Arrogant and unhelpful. simplifies things to the degree where they are no longer understandable
I took micro 200A and B with him. The best prof ever. Ishiguro changed my life - literally - I fell in love with the subject because of him. He is very good at explaining things. The course can be challenging so please, for your own good, go see him in his office hours. He is SO helpful and not in the least bit mean. Love this man.
Arrogant. Does not answer iclicker questions. Answers questions with "I'll let you figure it out". LOVES fill in the blank questions on midterms and finals but the questions are vague and it's difficult to see what he's getting at. Each blank is worth 2 marks and no part marks are given if you don't get the EXACT word he's looking for.
Goon. Tests were wierd, final had stupid fill in the blank that were worth so much. arrogant, never answered clicker questions, made us figure it out. No, how about you tell us, cuz we are paying to be taught and clearly no one understood. seemed to always speak fast at key info in lectures. glad to not be taking 200B.
Great prof. makes you think for yourself, rather than spoon-feeding you like most. makes you question, and research your own interests. great with after-class/outside of class questions, if you are clearly interested.
Like others have said, very helpful outside of class. Lecture material is clear, concepts he wants you to know are clearly laid out.
Oh, boo hoo, a teacher that actually makes you think and doesn't feed you all the answers. Deal with it, this is university! Ishiguro can come across as arrogant, but he is actually a very kind man, and very helpful outside of class. Go see him in his office hours. Fantastic prof. Great class.
Not an easy course especially the lab components but fun and interesting and they teach you the right way unlike in some other courses. Dr ishi loves to help students and has open door policy so u can drop by and ask questions anytime. no office hours!
Ishiguro is so awful! He finishes EVERY class at least 5 minutes late and makes everyone late for the classes they have afterwards. I wouldn't recommend his class to my worst enemy I really don't like him and he also isn't very good at explaining theories or ideas. DON'T DO IT!!!!
When I started taking a class with him everyone told me he was so great but he's actually really arrogant and unhelpful. he also isn't very clear. I have been reading all the material before class and after class as review and go for help and still don't do well in his tests. He purposefully tries to confuse people. so bad!
He is clearly really knowledgeable, but he is very arrogant. Constantly calling class stupid which makes people not want to go to office hours but go anyways. He is very smart and can explain things better one on one. On tests will have 5 mark question on something he mentioned once and 1 mark question on something we spent an entire lecture on
Ok, he may be arrogant, but it's his right since he's been teaching over 40 years. He is a real inspiration, and I don't think I've ever learned so much in two courses as I did in his classes. Topics were always interesting and relevant; tests were very fair. Labs could be tricky, but you learn a lot. Over all the best classes I ever took at Uvic.
Excellent teacher. I didn't notice any arrogance when I had him, in fact, quite the opposite. Kept topics interesting and was always willing to help anyone who had any questions. I learned a ton from him and I really hope to have him for a class later in my biochemistry degree.
This class was brutal. I am extremely interested in the subject but somehow he made it boring. The notes were all over the place and you could barely hear him. Exam questions were so oddly specific. I wish I had dropped this course. I do not recommend it.
Such a bad prof. Does not care about how students do in his class. Super boring lectures, cannot follow his train of thought. His lectures are so pre-planned to the T.
Excellent prof! Class started out a bit slow coming from a science background, and a lot of the information seemed repetitive. I am glad I did not drop the course though because as the semester went on, the class became more interesting. Really helpful during office hours, and a GPA boosting class for sure! Light workload / fair exams.
Dr. Ishiguro's lectures COULD BE somewhat redundant as he repeated himself a lot but the material he covered was very interesting. I found him to be very helpful, but some of the exam questions were not even covered in class and were not even related to what we were studying.
iClicker required. Can be a bit condescending if the iClicker responses are varied - "How disappointing". Ed speaks very quickly and very quietly; keeping up with notetaking is difficult. Midterm was easy; MCs and SAs only. Will tell you assignments aren't mandatory and only for help understanding, but boom! they're on the test.
Least engaging prof I've ever experienced. Arrogant, confusing, ALWAYS keeps talking after class is over so everyone starts leaving while he's still blabbing on. Somehow made a fascinating course excruciatingly painful. As a biochem major take my word for it and DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!!
Getting on in age but sharp as a tack. Explains tough concept in crystal clear ways. People on here say he's condescending. Yes, if you're a sensitive, affirmation seeking first year, then he will appear condescending. Bottom line is that he cares, and teaching is clearly his vocation. Grateful for this legend. Pay attention and get an A.
Ed is definitely one of the most inspirational teachers I've ever had. I had him in my second semester of first year - after having a pretty rough first semester. After day one, completely changed my outlook and motivation levels. His motives for his teaching style is to motivate us to think, do the readings, be involved.. Not just give an easy A
Ishiguro is a solid prof overall. He goes over the concepts very clearly and he repeats key concepts several times throughout the semester, but his lectures can be somewhat dull. Overall, tests were fairly simple, and he is not nearly as condescending as some people make him seem.
Condescending, bumbling, stubborn; easily worst professor I've ever had. Asks questions of the class, invariably interrupt the students during their answer, either to say the student was incorrect, or to get the chance to say the correct answer before the student did. Often, when he did "correct" a student, he said the exact thing they did.
Does not have a good understanding of the material and therefore rambles off topic . Final was horribly specific and was worth 60 percent. Worst prof I have ever had hope he gets replaced soon .
I truly respect him, but he is a little condescending sometimes during the lecture. The final was so stressful and I got muscle cramps after writing his final. Reading the textbook is essential for getting an A
Ed is getting up there in years so he as a lot of knowledge. Sometimes he can seem uncaring or disrespectful to students but it's him. He is very willing to talk to students about the material or about life in general but doesn't like it argue marks. He does make hard exams so you really have to know the material REALLY well! Overall I liked him.
Final exam (worth 60% of final grade) was supposed to have the written portion consist of short answer and fill in the blank questions. Instead we had 3 "draw a diagram" questions worth 15-20 marks. Hard to prepare for an exam when your prof does this.
Y'all need to go to lecture & basically write down everything he says ever because it will on the test. Don't bother going to office hours, he is not helpful & very condescending, nothing you say will be totally correct and he will let you know that. He gives no feedback on the exams so on the MC and TF you have no idea what you did wrong or right
