SFL 260 was seriously such an amazing class. One of the few classes I've taken at BYU where I knew that everything I learned I would use for the REST OF MY LIFE! Assignments did not feel like busywork, but really stretched you to become more financially independent and self-reliant.
Honestly one of the best classes I have taken at BYU. I have enjoyed it so much and have learned a ton that is actually applicable to life!! Looking for a class to take for a few more credits, would highly suggest.
Professor Hill has some great advice and lots of applicable life experience. You can tell that he is passionate about what he teaches and his goal is to see students succeed.
SFL 260 with Dr. Hill was easily one of the best and most useful classes I've taken at BYU! There are a lot of assignments, but if you put in the work, you'll be fine. And the plus is that all of the assignments are applicable to real-life financial situations. Highly recommend this class to all BYU students!
This class was SO amazing! My recommendations are 1. TAKE THIS CLASS! (It'll help you your whole life) 2. Do all of the readings (I know, it can seem like a lot, but it'll help you understand YOUR financial future more than anything) 3. Go to all of the lectures (he's a great lecturer, you'll learn both about finances and about healthy family).
Loved the class. Open note/open book quizzes and tests- minimizes stress, but you still learn the concepts.
Money and finances have always been intimidating to me, but this class breaks it down in a way that is super understandable and easy. There are weekly quizzes and usually an assignment or two due every week, but all quizzes, tests, and the final are open book and open note. Projects and assignments are all super easy. Take this class!! Easy A!!
I absolutely loved this class! Professor Hill is one of the sweetest, kindest people you will ever meet. He really cares about his students and wants to help them succeed in life, not just in the class. SFL 260 is probably the most practical class you will ever take and it is fun to take as well. Highly recommend!
My favorite part of this class was how the assignments and tests all built real finance skills. There is no busy work in this class, it's all useful. Professor Hill gives great insights into being financially wise from a gospel perspective and just really solid financial advice in general. A must-have class and professor at BYU.
Dr. Hill is a very good professor. He literally wrote the book! I was glad it was an online course since he speaks very slowly. That way I could watch at 2x speed and get through the material more quickly. Very good and useful content!
Dr. Hill is an excellent professor! He is very clear when he talks and you can tell her is very knowledgeable on the subject material. This class is super helpful for life as well!
He's really caring! You can always ask him questions. He'll have quizzes every week, but if you take the time to go over the material it's an easy 100. There's also other assignments due that week, but it isn't that stressful and he'll give you all the materials you need to succeed.
This was a very useful class. I liked the online format because it allowed me to be more flexible and to watch the lectures on 2x speed. None of the assignments felt like busywork; they all had real-world application.
His quizzes and study material are very representative of the test (almost exact replicas), he gives a million easy options for extra credit. His lectures are entertaining and applicable and he is a genuine guy who loves what he does.
I loved my class with Doctor Hill! I was taking this class completely online and he did a good job of making sure that we understood everything. All of the information given will be useful in the future. I think everyone should take this class. It's a life changer.
I loved this class. I learned a lot and his online course was very organized and easy to follow along to. I would do it again!
This class was a fairly easy class with useful skills that were taught. The tests were a little bit long but not too difficult.
Great professor, great course!
I love Dr. Hill. Family Finance was one of the most applicable classes I have ever taken. I feel closer to being an adult than ever before. Dr Hill was so loving and caring and I was always engaged in his lectures. The textbook he wrote is gold as well.
This class is very helpful for the real world. This class is heavy on the textbook readings and the lectures. There is also a math workbook that is time consuming, but super important. Although demanding, the class is super interesting. If you stay on top of reading, homework, and the math workbook, you're almost guaranteed an A. Dr Hill is great!
SFL 260 was not that difficult. I took the on-demand version of the class winter semester of 2021. The weekly quizzes were open book and note so get the textbooks online so you can easily find the answers to the weekly quizzes. Otherwise, I think the course would be way more difficult!
Amazing professor and human being! There is a lot of course material and homework, but it is soooo worth it!
This class was awesome! I took it online, and the TA's were super helpful as were the videos. There are quizzes every week, but as long as you watch the videos and work with the TA's if you need to you will be fine. There are lots of opportunities for extra credit, and the grading isn't too hard. I learned so much in this class, take it!
Fantastic class, learned a lot of very important things about investing, and retirement preparation that I will definitely be using. Not too heavy of a workload for a side class.
This class taught me so many things that I know will be applicable to my future. There was more work than I thought there would be, but all of it helped enhance my learning and experience dealing with financial matters. I would definitely recommend it to everyone!
Dr. Hill was a great teacher. Although I took an online class, his lecture presentations were very informative and helpful with learning hard concepts. There is quite a bit of work but it really is all beneficial to understanding personal finance. I would really suggest this class to anyone looking to gaining a better knowledge of money management.
Dr. Hill's lectures were not only so interesting but packed full of useful information. I took this class to fulfill a requirement but had I not taken it, I don't know if I'd be ready for the real world. The principles he taught I will use for a lifetime. He is also so kind! I recommend taking him, his class was my most enjoyable one this semester.
good man
I loved SFL260 with Dr. Hill. I took the live remote delivery version so I wan't in class with him but I could still feel how much he cared about his students. His lectures were really helpful and the class is set up very well. I would recommend this class to anyone and everyone, it is super helpful for real life.
Took the blended course but attendance not required. If you want to take the online version, take the blended because there are less assignments.
Great Professor and a great class
I loved this class! Every single lecture and unit was extremely informative and useful for future financial life. I learned a ton and would recommend the class to everyone. The online version had a million and a half assignments with weekly due dates, so I found it difficult to keep up with everything I had to do.
He really cares about his students and will work with you !!
This class was organized really well. It was my first experience with an online class at BYU and I really enjoyed it! The course was easy to understand, the textbooks were cheap and online, and there were many resources to help even when you weren't able to attend an in-person class. Prof. Hill is caring and really wants you to suceed. I recommend.
Most helpful course taken at BYU. Loving professor.
This is a very useful class!
Professor Hill is a great teacher who is passionate about what he teaches! The class layout is very organized and the expectations are clear. The class does require some work, but it is all practical and useful information that I will use in my everyday life. I think everyone would benefit from taking this class!
Professor Hill is such a great teacher!! He is super helpful and wants you to succeed in his class. Very inspired and teaches clearly.
Professor HIll is one of my favorite professors now! I just finished his SFL 260 online class and absolutely loved it!! It was so much fun, super applicable, and I learned so much throughout! He is an amazing person! Hottest teacher at BYU!
Dr. Hill is amazing - he genuinely wants to prepare you for your future and future family. You can tell he is so passionate about finances and passing on his knowledge.
Professor Hill is one of the meekest men I have ever met! I definitely recommend this class as it is one of the most practical at BYU. I took it online and all tests were open note/open book!
As long as you do the work, you should be fine. I found the tests the be pretty easy and almost everything I learned was super applicable. Id recommend this class to any student.
Super genuine and inspiring. He helps your faith grow as he teaches you how to apply such great things in your life. He has such great knowledge from experience and wants to really help us in and outside of the classroom. Definite recommend.
Family finance was an awesome class! Use the TAs and you'll do fine! There are lots of assignments but they're pretty easy, quizzes make sure you know the slides and the math. Extra credit opportunities throughout the semester and at the end. Really useful information you wished you learned in high school to prepare for life. Highly recommend.
This class was taught through BYU Online, so everything was online. Dr Jeff Hill shares video presentation throughout the class that are very informative. You will have reading and worksheets that go along with the curriculum. The TA's are amazing and extremely helpful. I highly recommend this class.
Dr. Hill really believes in this subject. Everything he teaches about you can feel how deeply he believes in it and how he wants you to understand the content so you can succeed, not only in the class, but in life! He provides many extra credit opportunities. The textbook is online and he provides a walk through of all the material! He's awesome!
Dr. Hill's On-Demand Family Finance class was well organized. I enjoyed the recorded lectures. He tells relevant stories about his life that teach principles of being a wise steward over moeny.
Professor Hill is the most tender man in the world. This class also taught so many things about finances when it comes to life that I think everyone needs to know! Super beneficial and helped me feel more prepared for life.
Such a kind professor and really cares about his students! The class is pretty straightforward - you watch lectures, study the math guide, then take quizzes and exams. If you work through the workbook and feel like you understand it, the quizzes and exams are not too bad!
Prof. Hill is one of the sweetest teachers I've ever had, and this is also the worst class I've taken in my four years at BYU. I studied genetics, passed calculus and statistics but I was so lost from the very beginning. Nothing makes sense and you will never use any of the math in real life. The principles are important but this class was h*ll.
The books repeat some of what is mentioned in lecture, but not redundantly. Most quiz/exam questions come from the book but lecture is where the in-depth explanation is. Give yourself enough time to watch and read all of the material or you won't be ready for the quizzes/exams. Questions are based off understanding the material not skimming.
Like other reviews say, Dr. Hill is the sweetest professor ever BUT even with that being said, this class is way more work than it should be. I wanted to take this class to learn a few simple finance tips and tricks but instead it is a mostly complex stuff (a lot of math) that I will never use.. Dont take if you want an easy class.
Professor Hill is very knowledgable and a very kind professor. I took this class as a grad student because as a parent, I was interested in learning more financial principles. I did, but there was so much calculations/math involved for situations that I will never have to use, if I don't want to. The exams were long and tedious, way too long.
Professor Hill loves what he does, and it is very apparent to everyone in his class. It can be difficult to do the math when you take the hybrid class because you have to teach yourself on your own time. That being said, he has a wonderful team of TAs that are super helpful and have lab hours on Zoom and in-person to explain anything.
He is really nice! But I thought I wasted a lot of time with what I had to do. There was outside lecture videos, readings, and workbook pages you had to do before coming to class, then he would literally would just recite the same thing over again. I thought the information was EXTREMELY helpful though! Hence the reason why I would take it again!
This class as so helpful! All of the assignments are very clear and the tests were open book/open note. Professor Hill teaches so many life skills that will benefit you for years to come!
Great class! The tests were open book and note which is a major plus. I will say that you do have a lot of lectures to watch and readings to do. It's definitely not an easy class, but I learned a lot and still enjoyed it!
Good professor, just talks a lot of things that are not relevant to class which can be very boring sometimes
Teaches so many things you need to know! And applies the gospel to family life. Great class! And Professor Hill is the coolest guy!
Professor Hill is amazing and kind. He will provide ample resources to help you succeed in his course. I learned a lot about family finance and how to be a better financial steward.
Dr. Hill is fantastic and is very enthusiastic about family finances! I took the blended class and we had to watch recorded lectures every week and attend class twice a week. He often repeated stories from the recorded videos in live lectures and it made going to class a little boring.
This is one of the most useful classes I have taken at BYU, I think everyone should take it before they graduate! I learned tips and practiced skills in this class that I would not have learned in any other class. The projects help you apply what you are learning and gain control of your finances. I am so glad I took it online from Dr. Hill.
I loved taking Professor Hill's class! I learned a lot about basic finances that boosted my confidence. Professor Hill is very enthusiastic and clearly teaches principles of being good financial stewards. The workload is very doable, my only advice is to work on the two big assignments during the semester instead of waiting until they're due.
Great class, clear criteria.
There was way more math that I expected but each lesson was so applicable to life the math was worth the lesson. There is a quiz each week, readings, math, 4 tests, and a couple of activities/writing assignments. If you did the busy work then the class was an easy A. The quizzes and tests are open book.
Awesome Professor and useful class
Professor Hill and the family finance class are great. The study guides prepare you well for the exams and for life.
This was an informative and well constructed class. I felt like there was an unnecessary amount of busy work but I appreciated the material that was given. If you are willing to put in the effort, you should get an A in this class.
Dr. Hill is clearly very kind and cares a lot about what he teaches. This class is a TON of work though, so don't take it thinking it'll be a fun elective-type class.
I loved taking a class from Professor Hill! He is so passionate about what he teaches and makes it very doable to be successful in his class. The tests are long and kind of rigorous, but they are weighted pretty equally with assignments so it is easy to do well. I learned a ton and think it should be a required class at BYU!
Professor Hill is one of my favorite people in the world! He's so kind and so funny. He totally understands the struggles of financial life and dispels the fears usually surrounded by the financial future. The class did have a lot of assignments, but they were all manageable/not too difficult, so for a 3 credit class, it's pretty easy.
Professor Hill is great, and the class is a must take. You learn so much about how to handle personal and family finance. It helped me prepare for life.
Dr. Hill is a great professor! I always enjoyed his lectures and is just a quality human being. I would recommend him to anyone looking to take this class. You learn such valuable skills for life. He is strict with attendance and deadlines, but if you miss some, he allows for up to 16 point of extra credit!
Professor Hill taught a really great class! There are participation quizzes after every lecture, so you have to attend class to know the answers to the questions on those. The TA's were always super understanding and easy to reach. You could tell Prof. Hill really loves his students!
Jeff Hill is a genuine man who takes the hard life experiences he's been given and turns them into lessons for everyone else. The attendance quizzes are very specific so you HAVE to pay attention to do well on those. Make sure you get a good family group and pay close attention to due dates on LearningSuite and you'll be just fine in this class.
Dr. Hill is an amazing and very kind professor! His lectures are very engaging because he shares great stories to help illustrate concepts. The class is not hard just pay attention to do well on the quizzes. There is a group project, 2 bigger assignments, digital dialogues, and a final but no tests. Assignments arent hard but can be time consuming.
Absolutely loved this course! It felt good to finally take a class that contained important information that I could use in the real world. I am so so glad I took this class. I would take it again in a heart beat!
This class is fantastic! It is such a great way to get an overview of Family Life topics. I am an SLF major so taking it as a senior was a great way to review things that I had learned in other classes over the last few years. It's also a great class for non-majors who want some Family Life information but can't take a lot of other calsses.
Dr. Hill is amazing. 205 is such an easy class as it is an amalgamation of many different topics in the school of family life. Take this class if you have the chance. Easy, fun, and lots of extra credit. Jeff is super funny and lectures are always interesting.
This was the best class I have taken at BYU. The content was applicable and Dr. Hill knows what he is talking about. He is caring. The quizzes and exams were basically the same as the practice questions. I am now passionate about being a wise financial steward. The math was basic algebra. Great class!
I took Dr. Hills Home and Family Living class and it was awesome! I recommend this class to anyone looking for a class that covers basically everything about family life and honestly just good habits for life! There are no tests and very little homework. A very easy A and he has great lectures with lots of cool readings and videos.
Dr. Hill is the best teacher I have ever taken. I think that says enough.
All the lecture topics are so applicable to life and Professor Hill has the best life experience stories to add that make lessons memorable! There are just readings to do each week, a couple of group projects, and some discussion boards. Great class!
Dr. Hill knows his stuff. This class has a lot of information, but it is all very applicable to everyday life. I highly recommend this class.
Professor Hill is so great! He knows life is open book, so his tests and quizzes are open note/open book! There are lectures, readings and quizzes due before every class, but only once a week. Usually the other class is an optional math review. Super doable though! And it's useful information!
Dr. Hill is such a fun and engaging professor. He is knowledgeable and tells lots of great stories! He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to do well. And you learn some many useful skills for life in this class. Highly recommend!
Professor Hill is a gem! He's really funny and makes the lectures fun. My favorite part of his lectures was when he occasionally turned the lights off, put up a video of a crackling fireplace on the big screen, and told us a story. I loved this class!
He's very clear about what is on the test. All of them are open book so use the practice test key and online textbook search feature to your advantage. The lectures are mandatory but pointless because you take the quiz before class and teach yourself the math so there's no reason to go to class other than to hear his stories.
Professor Hill is awesome and family finance is one of the best classes to take at BYU. He makes the information useful, the workload manageable, and every lecture is uplifting. I took it on demand and it was not difficult at all to stay on top of everything. He makes sure the TAs are super accessible and they grade very kindly.
Professor Hill is so kind and lectures from him are the best when he shares his real life stories and application. This course had a lot more math than I was expecting but quizzes and test are open book and note because that's how the real world is! I loved the overarching principles I learned in this family finance class.
Professor Hill is THE BEST professor I have had so far at BYU, and this class is the best class I have ever taken. I did it online, but each lecture was clearly outlined, and he explained the (very, very good to know) concepts in such simplicity! It was so easy to understand. Take this class from him!!!
Great class and professor! I learned a lot and didn't feel a lot of pressure. This is a good class to take that won't take all of your time and you'll enjoy learning!
The class was fine but I took it as a blended class which is half online and half in person which was mostly fine, but it was annoying that attendance was mandatory because we would listen to his lectures online and then attend in person and hear the same exact lecture. If I could go back I would just take the only online version.
Professor Hill was amazing! The class was all online but I learned more from his online lectures than I have from most of my in-person lectures. The class teaches you a lot about finances that is so applicable to real life. Some of the math can be difficult at times, but the class has so many resources to help you out!
Family Finance seemed like an interesting class, but he tests you on very specific details on a textbook he wrote. Math is crazy hard, and they even mention we will never use it in real life.
Professor Hill really knows his stuff! He wants his students to not only succeed in his class, but in the real world. Unlike some classes you take throughout your college experience, this class help prepare for life after you graduate. This class requires a lot of work, but it is worth it in the end!
I took the online version of this course and the workload wasn't terrible. It was quite math heavy which I was expecting.
Great teacher! I took SFL 260 which was Family Finances. It was difficult and out of my comfort level but I did learn a lot and thought it was helpful!
Good class! Lots of homework, but if you do the work, you won't struggle
Dr. Hill's class was absolutely amazing! He's such a great speaker and he does a really great job with teaching about finances and connecting it to the gospel. I've honestly learned a lot of valuable information about how to handle my finances that I will definitely be using from now
Jeff Hill is a super great professor. So kind and wise and I think his family finance class is so valuable. The math is not difficult, you just need to do put in the effort to understand how to do it is all (but it doesn't take crazy amount of effort to be enough). Such a great class, everyone should take it!
Love Jeff Hill. He's one of the greatest people I've taken a class from, really inspirational. Most of the homework is really easy, the math parts of this class were so hard for me though. More homework than I thought it would have.
Dr. Hill really cares about his students. I'm not a math person, but have still been able to do well in his class because he provides lots of help and instruction. I loved this class and wish I could take it again! You do have to use the online textbooks to do well, but all quizzes and tests are open-book so it's good.
Great class. Really easy if you put your mind to it. Very beneficial for your future!
One of the most energetic and caring professors I have ever had. He wants his students to succeed. Everything is open book/open note but closed internet. Awesome class taught by an awesome professor! Highly recommend.
Really great class! I have heard the legends of the great Jeff Hill and I was pleased to find out that they were all true! This class will change your life!
Prof Hill is a very sweet guy. He is super nice and really cares about his students and he's passionate about what he is teaching. There are quite a few assignments in this class but nothing out of the ordinary. Tests are open note but they can still be difficult for a lot of people.
I took this class online through Canvas; it was very well organized. This class is very helpful and relatively straightforward. Just be prepared to do a lot of (not super hard) math. If you feel like you need a crash course in 'adulting', Jeff Hill is your guy and SFL 260 is the class you need.
Professor Hill is a great professor, and is really good at engaging the class. To pass this class, you mostly just need to do your group projects and a few smaller online assignments. This class is really insightful and helpful in preparing for a future (or current) family, and was definietly my least stressful class of the semester.
This class was so awesome! Full of useful skills and info that I will use my whole life. I'm so grateful I took it! I took it online and it was very easy, you need to do the homework but it never took my more than an hour. please do it
Professor Hill is an amazing teacher and you can really tell that he sincerely cares about his students. I learned so many valuable life lessons in this class that will help me navigate through life. I took this class as an elective and I don't regret it at all.
Jeff was a great teacher! He is very knowledgeable and an enjoyable person to learn from. His family finance class was super easy and the TAs are super helpful. I would definitely recommend!
This class was AMAZING. It's not difficult, but you learn so much important stuff. I thought I was financially savvy before this class, but I learned so much. It wasn't very hard, but if you put effort into the assignments, they will really help you in real life! Because of this class, I finally got all my financial ducks in a row.
Professor Hill is AMAZING! Take SFL 260 from him! And any other class! He cares so much for his students and you can feel that he wants them to succeed financially and in their future families. Everything he teaches is done with love and is done simply! I took this class online which I loved because the powerpoints/math reviews were accessible.
Dr. Hill is engaging and truly cares about this topic and helping his students learn and grow. He give opportunity to earn extra points on exams by working with the TAs and really seems to care that his students learn how to apply the information from the class. Highly recommend. Most useful and applicable class!
This is my second class with Professor Hill and I love him!! He will tell you that family finance is the most important class you will ever take and it really is. The work itself is extremely easy, but he gives out what felt like a lot of busy work, so be prepared.
Professor Hill is so passionate about teaching this subject! This was an incredible class and I'm so glad I took it before graduating. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to "adult" better. I understand taxes now!! The financial principles apply a bit more once you're established--but it never hurts to start learning them now!
Professor Hill is amazing. He is such a genuine, happy guy. He teaches the subject enthusiastically and tells a lot of stories. The class can get repetitive, but it helps to engrain concepts into your memory. It is also super applicable and will teach important skills with family finances.
I think Jeff Hill is a good professor you can tell he loves teaching. I think his life is evidence of his dedication to the concepts taught in class. Lectures include many real life stories.
Great guy. Has wonderful things to say about finance and the course is well-organized. If you make sure to study the math problems in the work book you'll be fine on the tests.
Professor Hill is an incredible teacher! All his lectures are engaging and everything you learn in this class you will use in everyday life. All the assignments have a purpose and help you learn how to handle different aspects of finances.
Dr. Hill's SFL 260 online class was great! The organization of the class made perfect sense. There were videos that helped explain how to do all of the math. The quizzes /exams were all open note/book.
Professor Hill is a great teacher! I really enjoyed his lectures and he was really inspiring. He taught a lot of real life lessons and skills that I will definitely use in the future.
Great lessons for real life, and there are a ton of TAs to ask questions on assignments or about the material. Take advantage of office hours! Tough class if you don't take notes/study, but totally worth the knowledge you gain. I took the online class, so lots of lectures and reading but only a quiz per week and little work. Limited extra credit.
I really enjoyed Prof. Hill's class. It is really a class that will help you in life, not just get you to graduation.
Professor Hill did a great job this semester. The course was engaging and really easy to follow along with. Taking it online was a great choice because it gave the chance to work through everything whenever you had the time.
I took this class on demand (and I am not a fan of on demand, it is hard to stay motivated) but that being said I still really enjoyed myself. It is a great and practical class that I think everyone should take. Dr. Hill does a great job in lectures and speaks clearly, I never left confused after watching a prerecorded lecture video.
Absolutely amazing!! Brother Hill is fabulous! This is the class that has helped me the most as a person throughout my college experience. I'd recommend this to anyone.
Dr. Hill is super awesome! I wish I had taken this class in person because learning the math side of family finance was difficult to me. Highly recommend!
Professor Hill is such a likeable person, I would definitely take his class again. He gave weekly lectures that were easy to follow and comprehend, and the TA gave very thorough reviews of the material we would be tested on each week. The work was time consuming, but as long as you TRY, you will succeed. I learned a lot of applicable life skills.
I took this online and loved it. I was nervous for this reason, but the video lectures are great, clear, and interesting. There were a few papers but they were easy & small. There is math, so be ready for that but a lot of it was common sense that a 7th grader could do. Tests were clear and didn't try to trick you, and were open book & notes.
I took SFL 260 on-demand and I have no regrets! Professor Hill is an amazing professor! He truly cares about his students, his lectures weren't boring, and his course was laid out in a very thought-out way. If you're thinking of taking this class, DO IT!
He was a good professor and made class interesting, the tests were pretty hard but Im also slow and rubbish at math so probably easier for other students. He also did everything through canvas, and it being my only class on there it was annoying to switch back and forth to see what is due, twas confusing and I missed assignments because of this:/
You receive practical knowledge, an easy A, and flexibility with this course. All quizzes and exams are open note and book which is super nice. The questions are often very similar to the practice problems and wording in the book. It is all online so you don't interact with Jeff Hill much but he makes it known that he cares about his students.
There is a textbook but I didnt really read and I was fine. The lectures provide good advice for life and all the tests were open note open book. I was not expecting the math portion to be hard, but it was difficult if you do not put the effort it. Minimal effort class and professor Hill sincerely wants his students to leave his class happy.
Professor Hill is very passionate about teaching and family finance. All the tests and quiz' are open book and open lecture. My only complaint is that some of the larger assignments felt a little bit like busy work. Material is very applicable and has changed the way I save money.
I liked this class. I am already pretty financially secure and so this class was something I took because I needed it for my major but I would recommend it if you are looking at how to start becoming more financially secure, especially in regards to family life.
If you are interested in learning financial basics, take this class! I am not interested in the topic so this class was not as fun for me. I learned some important things. Make sure to watch the TA math videos!!!!
This class is amazing. It should be required as a general course. Every single thing I learned is something I am excited to apply in my life.
Dr. Hill's family finance class is a must for everyone. I learned so many life skills and things that are important to know as a college student becoming more and more financially independent. And Dr. Hill is definitely the best teacher to take it from since he knows so much. He also is just a genuinely nice prof who really cares.
Professor Hill is a great teacher! He lays out his class online in a clear and effective way. He gives you all the resources you need to be successful!
Just talk to him if you ever need anything. He is a SAINT.
Great Professor really cares about you and the subject matters.
It felt like projects came out of the blue and asked us to do really random things. And then there would still be a quiz and a discussion in weeks where wed have a 6 or 7 hour project. And the amount of work some projects tookdidnt correspond to the points they were worth.
This class is literally the best class I've ever taken at BYU, not kidding. Tons of extra credit, clear grading, and I took it online so all his lectures were 2x speed. I actually learned so much that has genuinely helped me in my life, plus he is just the cutest old guy ever. You won't regret taking his class.
Professor Hill is great! I gained a lot of useful tools from this class for managing finances wisely.
I could tell Prof Hill cared a ton about his students. He shared a lot of personal stories which helped me understand the principles he was teaching. I took this class on demand and it was a great way to do it. Highly recommend Prof Hill! He taught clearly and the class was so organized!
This was a great class! Dr. Hill is hilarious and always tells the best stories. Attendance is mandatory but nothing he lectures on will be on the test so it was hard to get myself to class. But study for the tests and you'll be fine. EC is also available which is nice.
Super applicable class! Dr. Hill teaches so much about managing money and general financial knowledge that is so important. Great teaching style and overall amazing class. I would highly recommend this to anyone. I would get ready to read and work though- not an easy A.
I. LOVE. PROF. HILL. He is so much fun! I love his lectures. He takes time to answers any questions about finance. This course is so applicable to real life! I have discovered a real love for family finance.
This was the most useful class I've ever taken at BYU or honestly in academia in general. Dr. Hill gives such useful information--I'm going to use my notes for life! The math is not bad at all and you always have access to formulas. Plus, they are equations that you can actually picture yourself using in real life. 100% take this class!
Professor Hill is the best! I took his Family Finance class. He had great lectures and was very personable with his students. I learned so many things about taxes, mortgages, loans, investing, and so much more. This is one of my favorite classes that I've taken at BYU, and it's one of the most applicable classes for life.
One of the most caring Professors I have ever had. Wants his students to succeed. The TA's are there to help, use them! Would for sure take from Professor Hill again
This class teaches so many things that are applicable after college. Professor Hill is so kind and makes concepts easy to understand.
Prof Hill does a wonderful job teaching you everything that we always joke we never learned in high school but we should have. This class requires a solid amount of outside work, but in that time you actually learn how to invest, go into debt intelligently, budget, pay taxes, and many other useful things. Wholeheartedly recommend this class.
Professor Hill makes it clear that he cares about his students! He is accommodating and a great lecturer. The class was pretty easy and I learned a lot of valuable things that I will use for the rest of my life!
Dr. Hill does a great job of introducing interesting information to his students during lectures. His stories are really funny and he has lots of life experience to make him very credible. Very laid back, practical class.
Very good class with many TAs to help guide you along.
This is the most useful class on campus. There is definitely reading and work needed to be done but everything you will learn here will be used in the real world.
Dr. Hill is a fantastic teacher. Lots of stories and fun lessons. ALL exams and tests are open note and open book. You can even look back to online lectures and worksheets during an exam. Lots of TA's to help if you don't understand the material. Some of the math can be confusing but ask for help or go into the TA lab. Extra credit available!
I love Dr. Hill! He is amazing. The class has a lot of important information. I took the class as a blended class and I felt like I ended up doing double the work. Lots of busywork assignments. You have to do a lot of the math learning on your own which was hard for me personally. If you're good at math you'll be fine, if not the TA lab was helpful
This class is the most applicable class one can take at BYU, no matter the major. I would suggest it even if you already have your quantitative analysis general credit. Easily worth the money if you look at it as an investment to your future. Dr. Hill was kind and knowledgeable.
I took SFL 260 online and loved it. I learned a lot of very applicable information and liked the flexibility that the online set up allowed. If you watch the math review videos and listen to the lectures you'll do just fine on the tests.
Dr. Hill is someone who really wants you to succeed in life. The math in this course is what really got me, but I definitely learned a lot. You can tell that Dr. Hill really cares. Don't be afraid to reach out to him if you have questions or concerns; he always emails back quickly!
Dr. Hill is an amazing professor. He really cares about his students and not only wants them to succeed in his class, but in life. His lectures are enjoyable and very helpful. Extra math help is always available. Extra credit is very easy. Loved this class!! I learned so much!!
This is the class that I will use the most over the course of my life. It is SO worth taking and a curriculum should be developed for high schoolers so they can learn how to be wise financial stewards before becoming adults.
Dr. Hill genuinely cares about his students! One of the nicest professors on campus.
Dr. Hill is one of the most meek and inspiring men I have met. His class will equip you with a lot of practical financial knowledge that will save you a lot of stress and money now and later. However, the blended format of this class was very repetitive, the textbook, online lecture, and in-person lecture all teach you the same thing over and over.
Dr. Hill is so, so kind. I learned so much in this class, and really enjoyed getting to become a better financial steward!
Professor Hill is an amazing person, and he genuinely cares about the subject and the student's success. I know many have already said it, but this class literally is the most practical and useful class for adulting that you will ever take at BYU. It has a lot of material but the good thing is that all quizzes and tests are open book, open note.
This was one of my favorite classes. It was assignment heavy, which was time consuming. There was tons of practical knowledge. Everyone should have to take this class. Dr. Hill is the best.
I absolutely loved this class, and took it as an elective. I wish I had known about all these financial principles earlier in my life! I am not a math person (I am actually studying English teaching) but the calculations were manageable. I would definitely recommend this class, and this professor, to anyone.
I took this class online and it wasn't bad. I wanted to learn about budgeting and how to be a smart investor for myself and my family. I feel like I got out of it what I wanted to
Interesting class, I would definitely recommend that people take family finance. You can tell he really wants you to succeed in life.
Dr Hill is awesome! Bottom line, if you take this class you will walk away feeling confident in your financial life and honestly just life in general. Attendance is mandatory and that was frustrating at times, but overall, the class was great.
Professor Hill is an awesome professor who teaches an extremely useful class. If you struggle with how to use and manage money then take this class. It's easy enough
He's such a great professor, even online! He simplifies complicated topics, gives great insights (both spiritual and financial), and presents in a very precise manner. I definitely recommend taking this class if you want an easy GE credit!
Stop reading through these reviews and sign up for the class! Amazing, applicable financial advice and the best teacher at BYU.
I loved this class! I learned so much and Jeff was just amazing. Seriously, take this class. It's 3 credits but it feels like like 1, but its useful and just yes!
Dr. Hill was one of my favorite professors at BYU. He knows his stuff, teaches it well, and loves what he does. He shares so many good life lessons as well as financial advice that's just unbeatable. His class is not too hard and could easily be added on with your semester load. You just can't go wrong with Hill!
Jeff Hill is an amazing professor! He is really good at giving engaging lectures that you can watch anytime since they're recorded. There were discussion posts that you have to comment on almost every other week but the quizzes and exams are fairly easy since they are open note and book and the answers are pretty clear.
Jeff is the sweetest professor! The course was laid out very clearly and he made difficult concepts like taxes more comprehendible. The course was not too hard. Tests and quizzes were open book/open note but the tests were a little too long in my opinion. Overall, GREAT CLASS! Take Family Finance from Jeff!
Dr. Hill's class is incredibly practical for navigating finances in the future. You do have to spend time working through and understanding the math. But, there's PLENTY of help from the TAs (powerpoints/zoom recordings). They also provide powerpoints that literally go step by step through the tests (with different questions of course)
This was the most influential class I've taken at BYU. It gave you real world knowledge and experience to apply into your life.
Dr. Hill was an amazing professor; his lectures were inspirational and I learned so much from this course.
The class was super organized and very well-done. All the tools you need to succeed are easily accessible and at your disposal. The course content is really applicable to real life and you'll really use everything you learn in the class
Dr Hills class is very valuable and applicable to life! He clearly teaches concepts and provides resources if you need to understand more. I didnt use the textbook except for the tests, which are open book/note so I would highly recommend getting it. Overall, easy class but be prepared to do the work. As long as you do, youll be just fine!
This class was not an easy class. However, the professor offers lots of opportunities to be successful in class. The class is very applicable and it will be things I will remember for the rest of my life.
Great class great professor. Talks a lot though make sure to keep his lectures on double speed
This class from Dr. Hill was great even though it was fully online. As long as you set aside time to do the work, you will be fine. Be prepared to study for the quizzes and tests, but as long as you pay attention and do the practice math problems they are pretty decent.
I took SFL260 fully online during the Winter semester. The class is consists of two or three readings, a discussion board, and a quiz each week. Three midterms and a final. The TA lab is always open which is helpful. Honestly, I have never interacted with Dr. Hill, but he seems nice in the lecture videos.
Dr. Hill is very nice and just one of those guys you like listening to. The assignments are not very hard, but they do require effort and thought. Learned a lot in his class.
Super Great! Brother Hill is the Most kind person! The online version was great because all the quizzes and tests were open book! Quite a few assignments though.
I loved this class! Came into it not knowing much of anything regarding finances, and came out knowing so much more! This class is all application-based and the textbook is an enjoyable read! Dr. Hill cares about you and prepares you to bless your future family. Assignments were helpful and if you do the work, you'll have no problem getting an A.
This is an online class. There's three webinar's that you can either watch online or attend in person and other than that there's weekly assignments due on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I learned a lot of applicable tips and tricks to family finance, like you get the most value out of a car that's two years old with low miles on it.
I was looking for an easy class, and this was it! It was also very helpful. If you are looking for a practical, yet easy class. I'd definitely recommend it.
The class is so incredibly simple if you already like doing basic math. It takes about 1-1.5 hours a week, and a little more when midterms are open. He is also just an incredibly happy man. He gives you tons of extra credit at the end of the semester. Can be boring course activities, but material of the class is generally interesting to learn.
I took Family Finance from Professor Hill, online. This class is excellent. It should be required for all BYU students to take. The course content will help you become competent at managing your finances and developing good habits. There was more work than I expected. The organization on Canvas is also very complicated. Tests are challenging.
Dr. Hill is way chill. He sets expectations early on and it isn't hard to get the assignments done. He gives you everything you need to succeed and he's such a nice guy. Great life class and great professor.
A lot of it is online but he keeps it very concise. For exams it's super detail oriented so you almost have to reread the textbook for tests (which are open book).
I enjoyed the class. Would take again.
This is a great class for learning the basic of how to plan your finances and basically give you the basic knowledge of adulthood.
Great general class. The class is easy (answers for open-book tests directly from textbook), but you still learn things that are applicable to real life. In the online format it was not very demanding on my time. Not necessary to watch all the lectures, but I would recommend because Dr. Hill is great.
Great Class and Great Professor!
I absolutely loved the course. Dr. Hill provides many resources to help clarify the lecture material as well as the math portion of the class. He finds ways to have you apply the principles of finances outside of class. This is an amazing opportunity to prepare more fully for your future!
Fantastic Family Finance course. I took SFL 260 right after getting married and added a ton of useful skills to the foundation I already had. Not a heavy class so if you're on the fence about it, do it.
He's very kind and is available when you need him, he's very funny and smart. He knows a lot about finance and explains it well in his lectures.
Professor Hill is knowledgeable, humorous, has a good spirit and passion about what he teaches. The lectures weren't overly long or boring and instead were helpful and meaningful.
Dr. Hill is a really nice old guy who repeats his stories a lot. He knows his stuff, but his class is definitely catered to the upper middle class member of the church. I felt like if I heard the phrase "wise financial steward" one more time I might die. I learned a lot, but wasn't my favorite class.
Dr. Hill was very sweet and offered many fun and practical assignments for us. I would recommend taking it in person than online.
Dr. Hill was a fantastic professor. He is engaging and I learned so much from him. His course is set up so it's easy to follow and clear when things are due. I took his course online and it was the most beneficial class I have ever taken. You won't regret taking his course!
Professor Hill was a great professor who had a relatively easy course. If you're looking for a flexible online course, this is a great one.
I would highly recommend this class! It is one of the most practical classes I have taken at BYU. Homework isn't awful and neither are tests. Tests are open note/open book. Dr. Hill is super easy to work with and has great TAs.
Prof Hill is one of my all time favorite professors, he cares for his students and their future! So glad I took this course
I loved taking family finance from Dr. Hill! He does a really good job explaining what information is most important in a clear way. I liked that the assignments were mostly practical applications of what was learned in class. Take SFL 260 from Dr. Hill! He made the class very easy and applicable to life, and you always know what to expect.
Jeff Hill is super nice and really cares about the students! If you want to take it from him, jump on it fast; he's retiring next year. My only problem with this class is I wish there wasn't so much math. Then again, it's all important, practical, life-relevant math, so maybe I shouldn't be complaining.
His class was a little busy at times, but he was great to learn from and had a lot of useful things to say that many students don't know. He's a nice guy. I would have taken it in-person rather than online if that had been an option.
What meant most to me was that Professor Hill taught about believing in ourselves and not giving up. He was such a light and so happy to be around. I took this class on-demand and it wasn't my favorite way to be taught. I felt disconnected and it was easy to fall behind at times. So, if I were to do it again, I'd choose the in-person option.
Dr. Hill is obviously knowledgeable and cares a lot about helping students succeed in school and life! I learned a lot of valuable and applicable real-life lessons related to family finance that will be useful in life going forward. Online format isn't my favorite for learning, but ability to use our notes/textbook on exams was especially helpful.
Professor Hill is great! I took this course remotely so I didn't really interact with him personally, but his recorded lectures are informative and engaging. He does a great job of connecting the gospel to the material.
A class full of practical application, and taught in an engaging way - even online. The financial topics covered have the potential to be pretty boring, but his electric personality pulls it off! Great professor.
SFL 260 is a must take! It was one of those classes that teaches you basic life principles that you are actually going to use!
Professor Hill is one of those professors that you can immediately tell loves to teach and loves what he is teaching. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn how to be financially savvy. I believe he is the best teacher that could teach this class and he has formatted his class so that his students can succeed.
Professor Hill is the best! I took his class online so I did not get to interact with him much in person but you can tell he cares for his students and the material in this class was very clear! The practice math problems before tests are life savers! I also took Marriage Prep from his wife Tammy at the same time! That is a must take as well!
I took family finance online and I really enjoyed the material! This is one of those classes where you'll actually use what you learn in the future. I picked up some great tips to prepare for buying a house or car, starting a family, investing, and saving for retirement. Dr. Hill is very passionate about what he teaches!
Professor Hill is an amazing person and teacher. He is wise in financial matters and consistently emphasizes the importance of being wise financial stewards over our monetary blessings. Although there is a lot of required reading and a decent amount of math involved, it does not feel like a burden because the skills taught are extremely valuable.
Dr. Hill is a great professor! This class was soooo practical and I'm really glad I took it because I learned so much.
I think this might have been the most useful class I have taken at BYU. I really really recommend it. He offers the ability to make up any test up to 80%, the notes are really clear, and the textbook is straightforward and interesting.
This class was extremely relevant and interesting. Professor Hill obviously knows what he is talking about. He prepares you well for exams because he gives you practice problems and study guides. Know that this class is kind of math-heavy, but he and the TA's make sure you understand.
This was such an enjoyable and applicable class. Everyone at BYU should take SFL 260: Family Finance because it contains such useful information for money management in our world today. There are plenty of assignments, but they are all geared toward helping you with your finances in your personal life, so they are worth the time.
SFL 260 is the most practical class I have taken in my 4+ years at BYU! I wasn't feeling confident in my financial abilities, but I learned so much & feel better about the future. You cover things like credit & loans, insurance, mortgages, auto purchases, retirement, investing, & more. Take this class before Dr. Hill retires in the summer of 2023!
Super useful and engaging class. I took this online, but I definitely learned a lot. I didn't expect there to be so much math, but it was all very practical. Personally, I think you could learn just as much by reading the textbook on your own, which Dr. Hill wrote. ALSO: SFL 260 is offered FOR FREE by BYU Independent Study! Just FYI!
Dr. Hill is very passionate about Finance and very funny in his lectures and sets clear expectations for coursework. There is alot of math, but if you follow the Workbook and do the practice problems, it should be no problem. I'd suggest using the online financial calculator, it seems a lot more straightforward than the handheld TVM calculator.
Take this class; it is incredible! Professor Hill is so precious and this class is a perfect blend of learning a TON, but it is not so hard to where it is overwhelming. 100/10 recommend.
Great class! You learn a lot of financial stuff-- more than just how to make a budget. Go over the reviews and the practice problems and you'll do great on the tests and quizzes.
Taking Dr. Hill's class was one of the most practical and informative experiences I've had in a class at BYU. He does a wonderful job of explaining finances from a practical, applicable perspective and has lots of personal experience to illustrate what he's talking about. I felt like every lecture and assignment was doable and taught me something.
I absolutely loved taking this class from Professor Hill! You can tell how much he really cares for his students and what they are learning. The TA's for this class were also amazing! Definitely recommend for anyone looking to learn more about finances.
This is a great class and Professor Hill was amazing! Everyone should take the family finance class!
Dr. Hill's SFL 260 class is very helpful. I took this class online, so I didn't interact a ton with the professor, but he demonstrated even through an online class that he really cares about his students. This class is a math GE, so get ready for lots of math questions on tests/quizzes. Tests/quizzes are all open note and open book.
Such an interesting professor! I enjoyed lectures and he explained concepts well. Sometimes the math was hard, make sure you do the workbook practice problems and watch the videos. Such a nice guy who made learning about family finance so fun! Learned stuff that was actually applicable.
I took the SFL 260 class online and loved it despite my dislike for math. The structure was very clear, and the modules taught were very applicable! My TA was very helpful and flexible. For those looking to get their math credit, I 100% recommend this class. Put in the work; the resources are there to help you succeed! Dr Hill is awesome!
This class is a very practical one and not too big of a workload! Would definitely recommend as a spring or summer term class, it's very doable. Lectures are clear and concise, rubrics are easy to understand, and the tests are open note/book/lecture.
Overall a great class. I felt like some of the test questions were specifically designed to trip you up, but that was definitely the exception. Relatively fast-paced, but it was during the spring semester so that is to be expected.
I LOVE Dr. Hill. He is caring, kind, intelligent, and it is clear he genuinely cares about his students. He is passionate about the material and so helpful. This class has a clear layout and clear expectations. It definitely requires time and work but if you use all the resources available it is not difficult. I have learned so much from Dr. Hill!
WARNING: If you take this class, be aware that exams are open book and open notes, BUT we're talking about 90 - 100 questions exams. They are timed and with lots of dumb questions and time value of money stuff. I've taken Acc 200, Stats 121, Fin 201, etc. and the exams for those classes were honestly more enjoyable than the exams for this class.
This class was awesome, if you are going to take any class it should be this one. It is the whole SFL major in one class and it is the best of everything you could learn in the home and family life. The TA was awesome and very accessible and helpful. Jeff knew everyone's name and shows that he cares about what he is teaching. No tests.
Professor Hill is so kind and caring. There are attendance quizzes so it is important to come, but lectures are engaging and interesting if you care about the family at all. I took it for my major but thoroughly enjoyed the class
Jeff is the nicest professor ever! The assignments aren't hard and the TA grades easy. He teaches practical things. Jeff tells the sweetest stories in class and really strives to know each of his students. There are readings before each class and can sometimes be a lot (about 15 textbook pages on average). But there are no tests or exams!
Dr. Hill is an incredible professor! The lectures are inspiring and fun to attend 10/10 would recommend!
Jeff Hill was a great professor. He responds quick to messages and definitely cares about his students.
One of the best professors at BYU. Cares about you and that you are able to apply what you learn. The class is easy and SO worth taking.
Dr. Hill is a great professor and has such useful tips for your life! Tests are open book and open note, so if you do your reading and fill out the study guide you will do well.
Great class! You learn a lot of really applicable stuff! He offers a good amount of extra credit and tests are open note.
Dr. Hill is awesome. The only thing I didn't like about this class was that it felt like most of the assignments were a little too long. There are write ups for almost all the assignments you do and weekly quizzes. Also there were 3 midterms which just feels like a lot for this class. I definitely learned a lot and would still recommend you take it
Dr. Hill is the best! His stories are awesome, he's engaging, and all of his tests and quizzes were open note, open textbook. Canva has prerecorded lectures that are super helpful. It kinda made going to class unnecessary, but it teaches such powerful principles. Definitely would take a gain.
You'll score well if you watch the lectures and prepare for the math before quizzes. Great guy who truly cares for his students.
Great class! There is a lot of assignment so beware of that, other than that it was a really easy class.
Great class! I learned a lot, and the professor was very kind/patient with his students. You will learn and pass the class if you go to the lectures and pay attention.
Professor Hill is awesome! I loved this class and learned so much about home and family life. I would recommend this class to anyone looking for an easy and enjoyable time.
Professor Hill cares so much about his students and about this class. The lessons he teaches are so useful in real-life and I feel much more prepared to be a wise financial steward after taking his class.
Professor Hill is super great! He is so passionate about the class and is so happy. He lays out the class very well with plenty of resources to use. The material can be difficult, so really make sure to study and know your stuff. There are always people to help when you need it, and there is test makeup options! Overall, a super great class.
This class was life changing. Professor Hill is very experienced in teaching this class. His class is very organized and I have found EVERYTHING that I've learned helpful. Take this class!!
This is by far the most useful class I've ever taken! He's only here for one more semester! Seriously, I learned so much about family finance and applied it during the semester! If you're like 99% of students who didn't learn anything about the practical aspects of finance from budgeting to taxes to investments and more, you need this class now!
Dr. Hill is awesome. He knows his stuff and is super funny. I loved the practical application with everything we learned. Tests are open book but have a lot of math so make sure you study. 10/10 would recommend.
I loved this class. The exams and quizzes are open book but don't be fooled, they're also times and it takes some time to get the math down so work on that before taking them. I would love to take this class again and would recommend it to anyone. Very useful and applicable information for anyone!!
He's great. Very engaging and fun to listen to.
I loved taking this class. Professor Hill is caring and intelligent about the subject matter. He is a great teacher. Fair warning, the class is more math heavy than I expected, but I learned enough applicable real-life concepts that made it worth it. Definitely recommend and would take again! I wish I had this info years ago
Dr. Hill is passionate about what he teaches! His lectures are entertaining, he shares interesting stories, and he encourages students to ask questions. The on-line text books and TA videos of the math were well organized and informative.
Dr. Hill is a great professor and very passionate. I took His class online but it was still a great course. Probably the best online course I have done at BYU yet. Winter 2023 is his last semester so you should defintiely take his class!
This class was good! I would recommend it to friends who are looking for it!
Dr. Hill's lecture videos are great and easy to understand!
Professor Hill is awesome! He really cares about his students, and about the material he teaches. He makes sure we understand the importance of finance in our lives, and he helps us be wise financial stewards!
I loved Dr. Hill's class! Being diligent about doing the online work will help you out a lot, but lectures aren't totally necessary. TAs teach the majority of the actual math for the course.
This professor is very knowledgable when it comes to family finance and it is clear that he simply wants his students to learn valuable skills that are actually applicable to real life.
Dr Hill is the kindest guy. There is a lot of busy work given in the class but it isn't graded harshly.
Brother Hill is one of the nicest professors here at BYU! His class was super clear and easy to understand. Overall, 10/10 class and instructor!
Jeff Hill is an incredible teacher. He cares so much about the content of the course, and his love for his students is so strong! Some of the material is difficult to grasp, but overall it just involves using fairly simple equations and plugging things in. Tests and quizzes are open book and notes, so as long as you do the reviews you'll be fine!
Professor Hill is an engaging, fun, and enthusiastic teacher who explains the class content in a way that makes sense. However, the class I took was blended (half online), so there was a lot of unnecessary repetition in the online and in person lectures. He also has a tendency to get off track during class.
Professor Hill wants to prepare you to be financially prepared. He does an excellent job of giving assignments that are applicable and relevant to you and your current situation. This class does not require a lot of work, but if you put in an extra effort, you will get far more out of the class.
Dr. Hill is the BEST! Just a down to earth, caring, hard-working person. In every video lecture, you could tell he was excited and happy to teach and help students become wise financial stewards. First few tests were super easy, some of the later ones were a little harder, but totally doable with open-note/lecture/textbook policy, etc.
Dr. Hill was very engaging and welcoming. I had some mental health issues mid-semester, and he was quick and willing to work with me to help me finish the class. He was very respectful and adaptable when I needed help. I would highly recommend this class!
Dr. Hill was very kind and a great teacher. He cares about what he teaches which is one of the most important qualities for a professor. I would attend his lectures more for the actual life benefit than to help get a good grade. It's a fairly easy class but math heavy.
For anyone at BYU, I would highly recommend taking Family Finance from Edward Jeffrey Hill. He is not only an expert in the subject matter, but an expert teacher and his class is awesome. He has already had a successful career and chose to come back and teach because he feels finances are important. Winter 2023 is his last semester so take it fast!
This class was actually very practical and helpful for future financial decisions. It had a decent amount of the course that required some math skills that I found difficult. There were tutorials to help, however.
I loved Family Finance! Super helpful class and professor Hill is THE BEST!
Useful class with good info, tests are open book which is a lifesaver
Class was very easy if you keep up with assignments and the exams are open book.
*For Dr. Hill Sr., not his son. Not sure which RMP page is his.* Dr. Hill knows his stuff! He cares about our well-being. Biggest issue: way too much math hw. Maybe because I didn't take this for a Math GE but rather to learn about family finance (the name of the class), but I was less-than-thrilled about how much math busy work there was.
Professor Hill really loves what he does and you can tell by his teaching. He also has relatable stories that connect you to the material we are covering. Since it was a blended course, there was a lot of outside work which was sometimes tedious, but overall it was pretty manageable. The TA's were amazing and helped when you had any question.
This was professor Hills last semester teaching at BYU but I enjoyed his class a lot! He has great stories and is friends with all the students. The work load is super manageable and the class is a great environment.
Dr. Hill is one of the most thoughtful, kind, and passionate professors I have ever had. He knows what he is talking about, and has incredible lectures that are packed with good information and advice. Dr. Hill also makes an effort to learn everyone's name, which is just so impressive and makes the class more personal. He is the best!
This was a super useful class as far as the information goes but there was a ridiculous amount of busy work. So much so that I started to not want to really try on the assignments towards the end of the semester becasue I didn't really feel it was helping me.
Dr. Hill is a great professor. His lectures are interesting. I learned a lot from this class. I took it not as a math GE, so the math felt tedious and like busywork at times. There were a lot of assignments but they are pretty easy. Exams are open book open notes. Overall, a really helpful, easy class.
He had difficult tests, but they were open note. There were also a lot of readings and lecture videos (I took the blended class option) and the lectures we watched online were super similar to the in-person class lectures.
Jeff Hill is a fantastic professor who loves what he does! He is very kind and is helpful to all of his students!
I love Dr. Hill, he genuinely cares about his students and speaks from his heart. He always has lighthearted lectures that are pretty easy to understand. The math in this course does take practice and repetition but the course material is very well organized!
Professor Hill is amazing! He taught me so much about personal finances and helped me gain confidence in my ability to manage my money throughout my life. He made sure to make lectures interesting while at the same time providing extremely valuable insights into how we could become wise financial stewards. One of my favorite professors ever!
Dr. Hill is a fantastic professor and I feel honored to be in his class his last semester!
Dr. Hill's class covers all things family finance-buying a car, house, insurance, investing, taxes, budgeting, etc. He highlights so many wonderful principles of being a wise financial steward, and often has relevant stories to illustrate these principles (especially given that he has a lot of life experience).
Super easy class and I felt like I learned a lot, but it was VERY repetitive. The lecture, reading, and online lecture were generally all the exact same. Also, I recommend talking or messaging him directly because his TAs never responded back. I recommend taking from him, but I would try to find a finance major friend who can help you with the math
