horrible speaker, boring, unclear; 3 essay tests
very very boring, and is a retarded grader...be prepared to get a D
Not the best lecturer-the class isn't hard if you go to lecutre & read the book
Good professor. Papers are conceptual.Lots of reading assingned -not necessary-
Nice guy, Borring lecture, 2/3 Essays instead of tests, 3-4 pgs each. rough.
Eventhough he takes a while to get to his point, his lectures help your paper!
Boring, and lectures never get to the point. Take another prof.
i rather watch a million re-runs of the golden girls then to hear him talk...
this time last year i disliked him...and today, I still dislike him..
lost our grades at one point, had to change them at the end of semester
Its been 3 years now, and I still cant stand that muppet of a man....
his classes are straight lecture, i.e. 75 minutes of taking notes. he may be boring to students, but he knows what he's talking about and he isn't big on dates and all - he wants you to know about time periods and influences on them. go to class!
He knows his ****! He seriously knows everything! His tests are easier than they seem-5 topics and just write anything you want about them- really easy grader! Tells you to read alot, I didn't read the document book, and i did fine
Not a bad professor, lectures are alittle dry but if you take good notes the tests shouldn't be that hard since he usually gives you clues as to what will be on the test. Did not really care about exact dates just major events that occurred during period.
not a bad class, except that it puts you to sleep. but if you stay awake for at least half the class you should be able to get enough notes to do well on the tests.
He is a very sweet man and really loves history. Can definitely be boring so drink coffee. Tests are okay. Write about 5 topics. I didn't do much of the reading at all, and I did fine.
A jerk. Bad teacher. I got a B and had all A's in all my other hard classes. This class should have been an easy A. Total subjective without regard to how good your answers are. Avoid him.
Class is cool all you do is watch movies, good ones too. Very little discussion, sometimes dry but short. He is always willing to help and if you go to class he gives you extra credit! Very nice guy, easy class just go. Highly recommended.
he makes outrageous comments. he misleads you about exam questions, and doesnt like to answer direct questions about its contents. do the reading for an easy b. go to class for the entertainment
the movies he shows are good and that's about it. forces his opinion on you, pulls grades out of his hat, and is flat out boring.
He looks like Napolean Dynamite...enough said
if u take this class, make sure ur house/dorm is near the library. too many damn movies to watch on TOP of the boring readings. tests are ok if you read, class is pointless to go to. older napolean dynamite is a good comparison
VERY GOOD CLASS AND INTERESTING TOO. IT WAS A LITTLE AWKWARD AT TIMES B/C HE WOULD RUN OUT OF THINGS TO SAY AND HALF THE CLASS WAS DISCUSSION.NICE GUY THOUGH. DO THE WORK AND YOU'LL DO WELL.
really nice guy, one paper and one final, lots of movies, makes class interesting, lots of reading
Watch the movies, read for what's on the study guide, and attend class occasionally and you'll do fine. Movie journals are time consuming but not strictly graded. Half of the movies were interesting and the class is definitely worth taking.
Definitely the worst class I have had at UD so far. He jumps from topic to topic, so taking notes is impossible. Don't take this awful class, you are destined to fall asleep.
He get's so excited about the material covered in class, and while it's sometimes hard to take notes, lectures are interesting. It's hillarious and awkard when he swears in lecture sometimes because he anticipates a negative reaction and says words cautiously. Come on.. just say it!
Possibly one of the most boring classes ever! Not a mean or bad man, but he will put you to sleep in his rehashing of the book readings. i hate this class, stay away
Had this class in the morning and fell asleep quite a few times. He recounts the book in class, but could never fill up class time for half the year. Midterm and final with multiple choice questions worth way too much. TA had to make many clarifications and eventually stopped coming to class also.
Sometimes he makes some real interesting points in lectures, but not consistently. If you like philosophy you'll enjoy his talks but not every day. I recommend the Western Heritage textbook, exceptionally good textbook reading. Incoherent powerpoints do not help you listen to him actively for very long. Class could be improved...
A real nice guy, but his lectures were very boring. Tests were easy, and he's a very easier grader. If you go to class and try to stay awake during his lectures, he will take notice and it will help your grade. Read the chapter summaries and use the study guide. Boring but easy class
I had him for my seminar on the Cold War. Very interesting seminar and very good teacher. I can see how others would find him boring and stuff but if you are a history major hes perfect for you. Theres a lot of reading but he picks good books, watched quite a few movies too so it wasn't a lecture every time.
Hes a really nice guy, and very passionate about history. Lectures are boring but its funny how excited he gets about the subject. Take notes during class and tests will be a breeze. He only gave 2 exams including the final. Take him for 106 hes the best ive heard of so far
Wholly decent class on a topic that might not at first seem exciting. Professor J is a very nice, rather shy man who tries to get students interested. No escape from required reading and writing but Professor J's grading is not at all harsh.
Good teacher, lectures are kind of dull. Genuinely cares about his students and is helpful. Attendance is not mandatory and you can get away with skipping, but he'll definitely reward you for showing up. He's a little quiet and scatterbrained but if he gets a discussion going it's normally a worthwhile one. Take if you're interested in the topic.
He's so gentle spoken and informative. Interesting stories to (in my opinion) uninteresting topics. He's kind of goofy and doesn't hold you for the entire class most of the time. Great class!
He is one of my favorite professors. He, of course, isn't for everyone, but if you like history, and you like putting something into a class, you will get something out of him for sure. He likes videos, and it's a lot of reading, so be prepared to read. If you come to class, you'll be ok.
Lectures wouldn't be so boring if he didn't stand there and just talk the whole time.Readings are too numerous and too long.Test questions are obtuse compared with lecture content.Expects us to have the same breadth of knowledge of impact without providing the information.
A little too liberal for my tastes but he's a fair grader. Attendance isn't really mandatory but the test questions essentially come from the lectures so going to class is to your advantage. Two research essays that are pretty easy are about 40% of your grade so make sure you keep up with the reading. Go to class and do the reading and you'll pass.
He is great. An elegant and liberal man in speech and mannerisms, even when he swears during lectures. Very knowledgeable about the topic; approachable and seems sincerely interested in helping his students. A lot of reading, so if you don't like reading, don't take his class. (He is handsome too.)
I was really interested in this class when I signed up but I walked away disappointed. He's a very nice guy and is certainly intelligent and approachable, but I don't think his teaching style is accessible to anyone except history majors who are used to straight, boring lecture.
Dr. Johanningsmeier is a very nice, intelligent man. However, his teaching style isn't ideal. I love the topic of this class, but I ended up withdrawing. There's no structure to the class and lectures are dry and tend to drift from topic. Unless you're a history major, I don't recommend this class.
His lectures are very jumbled and all over the place, but he is an easy grader on both the tests and the interpretive essay.
Fair professor, very insightful and well spoken. He does go off topic but does so to illustrate his point more. Could be more organized, but overall my favorite history prof.
I took this course for the movies, but the professor was very fair and knowledgeable. He loves the older movies.
A great overall teacher. Interesting to listen to if you keep up with the reading. Tests are very straightforward as long as you understand the issues.
As a teacher, he isn't great. However, he knows his stuff. Very knowledgeable in history, but lectures are extremely boring.
Professor is really nice guy and I loved taking this class.I will be taking more classes with him for sure. Tests are very straightforward and his movie selections were great.
Took class over winter. Met for three hours a day, tues-thursday. Never clear on what was required on exams. Exams were easy, but grading was not clear. I wouldn't take this class during the winter, kinda an annoying class. He says if you read you will get an A, but... I didn't. Nor did many others.
Hands down the best History professor at this school. Incredible amounts of knowledge about so many interesting topics, especially Cold War military history. Only problem would be that the grading can be a little confusing. Overall-great experience
Honestly, one of the weakest professors I've had at UD. I have a history minor and really struggled w/ class. He lacks structure for lecture & makes it very hard to grasp information & take notes. Ambiguous grading as well. 3 "quizzes" and 2 papers, crazy amounts of reading. DO NOT take as easy A, only take if you have tons of background knowledge.
Not too bad. Lacks some structure, but really does love and care about the subject. Once you realize how to take notes, the class isn't hard at all. Gives extra credit and even cancelled our final paper. He incorporates films and documentaries which really helped. Reading is hefty but all relevant. Learned a lot!
DO NOT TAKE. Extremely boring- and I'm a history major. He rambles and lectures on useless and irrelevant facts and stories. Do not take him if you want to learn anything about US history. Very nice and passionate guy, but he's a terrible professor.
His tests are kind of easy, but every topic is painfully boring. He lulls you to sleep. don't take
Thought provoking lecturesdiscussions. Only problem was during a visit to his office hrs where I had questions about Chicago format. Took 5 yrs off before going back to college and wasn't that familiar with in-text citation. He was kind of flippant with me about it and made me feel a bit stupid for asking. But overall I recommend him.
Only two tests-- midterm and a final as well as a 4-6 page midterm paper. I took this class passfail and didn't attend lecture once after the midterm. I studied purely from Wikipedia and saw maybe 2 of the movies all semester. Got an 82 on the midterm, 86 on the paper, 88 on the final. My only regret is not taking for a real grade.
Honestly, Johannigsmeier's classes are easy but the lectures are PAINFUL. He actually doesn't understand how to be engaging. I have taken 3 courses with him; this one I made PF. 2 exams, one paper. It's not the subject matter which is challenging, rather sitting in a room in Gore for 3 hours listening to him.
Frankly, I really liked Johanningsmeier. Very nice guy and really enjoys what he teaches. Little flustered, class always runs five minutes over. Easy grader, take good notes and you won't have to read too much. 3 easy quizzes and two book reports. Offers extra credit towards the end of the semester. Sit closer to the front so you won't fall asleep.
2 Papers, 3 Quizes, Final and some participation work. Dr. J is quiet and the discussions aren't lively, but they aren't terrible. Decent grader, have to read.
He's a nice guy so I feel bad saying it but he is the least engaging instructor I have ever had. Obviously very knowledgeable but his lectures are the cure for insomnia. You don't have to go to class if you're willing to catch up on movies on your own time because you WILL need to watch them. We had two papers and two exams. Textbooks were futile.
My background: Finance Major (B Student) There are 2 exams: Midterm and Final. There are 2 papers that are 4-5 pages double spaced (SUPER EASY). Don't have to go to class but attendance is 10% of your grade and there is a sign in sheet. I'd say take it its NOT bad. Wrote papers and studied the day of and got an 89 in the class.
Professor Johanningsmeier really enjoys what he teaches. If you study the movies youre good to go.
He is an ok professor, lectures are very boring and he rquires a lot of reading but you really don't need to study that much. He has absolutely n structure to his class so be prepared to make your own notes. Its a very bleh type of class
Movies were interesting, but lectures before were sometimes boring and hard to follow. 2 exams and a comparative essay. Wish there were smaller assignments/homework to help grade. Has slideshows of movies. You can skip class and watch the movies later on and still do well on the exams. He is very knowledgable about the time periods/movies.
Your grade is based on three exams and a paper. For exams, gave NO feedback whatsoever. Difficult to understand what to study for exams despite review guide given. Overall, class was frustrating and would not recommend!
We watched some really great movies I found some new favorites!! I recommend emailing him if you are going to go to his office hours. He is helpful in and out of class. I really enjoyed the class and what we learned. I also recommend taking it with friends because you can watch the movie homework tg and study tg. Tests aren't bad at all. Great prof
Lectures are very dry, and he can put you to sleep in a matter of 5 minutes. Always pauses the movies to explain what is about to happen before it actually happens. Need to watch movies outside of class and he says they are "free" but no matter where you look, they aren't free. No grading scale. These movies are old and roamed with the dinosaurs.
Try to stay awake during this class. Everything that he says, write down as test material will be said during lecture and very disorganized. Not very good use of technology, needs IT in almost every class. Just about 6 textbooks and expects you to read all of them. No grading scale. Although he is very dry, he is very knowledgeable of the subject.
TAKE HIST221 ONLINE! It's definitely an easy A online, I'm not sure how it is in class. He assigned 2-3 movies each week with a discussion section of a couple paragraphs answering questions about the movie, plus the movies were interesting. For the midterm you answer 5 questions about the different movies with a couple paragraphs each.
Not bad. Lectures ok. Nice guy. Lots of reading, easy papers.
This class had such a high workload-- we had only 1-2 days to read passages, view a PowerPoint, and watch a movie. He gave very succinct feedback as he didn't help clarify exactly what I did wrong and how I could fix it. If you want to do well, you need to spend COUNTLESS hours working on his assignments. One of the worst classes I've ever taken.
"Film & American Society" class lets you watch generally very good old movies (nothing newer than the 1960s, at least when I took it) for academic credit. Couple of exams and couple of short papers. The prof is not the most scintillating lecturer, but he's a very nice guy and seems to be a pretty easy grader.
He is so cute and sweet and genuinely tries to help all of his students. The movies chosen are pretty interesting, though old, and are well discussed in class
Although he is pretty monotoned in lectures, don't fall asleep and take good notes about what he is saying. Exams and writings are open notes. He is passionate about what he talks about, we had to write a paper and I had him read my paper beforehand to see what to change, I changed some things and got a 100/100. Not all films are free you watch.
He was really sweet. His lectures were a bit monotonous but he was passionate and knew his stuff. The films were all iconic and most were free. I barely did the readings and still got an A. The only things graded are weekly discussions, an essay, and the midterm and final. Pay attention in class and you'll pass.
He is passionate for what he is teaching and it shows, but he is very monotonous and rambles on. It feels like he talks forever and he can take a while to get the point. You need to watch the lectures and shows up to class because everything he says is important. Take notes on what he is saying and you will be fine. No too many assignments. Easy.
The professor knows what he is talking about and I really enjoyed the movies that were chosen as they taught the history very well. Although this course was online-asynchronous overall, the discussion boards helped keep me involved. Great class with fair assignments and a very fair, helpful, dedicated professor!
Very monotone professor and class is just always a lecture period. People sleep, finish other work, or just not even come... Be sure to do the inquisitive and get 100 on them if you aren't good at the documents quiz. The study guides he provides are very helpful to the midterm and final. If you're bad at history, you might want to change to P/F
Professor Johanningsmeier is a great guy. Very soft-spoken and offers a lot of extra credit. Most of the grade is focused on the Midterm and Final, but they are easy with a lot of studying.
The professor really cares about movies. Exams can be kind of hard but just take your time. Also the readings arent really too necessary. The first half of class is kind of useless but if you want to hear some background he can go on for a while. Also many of the movies are REALLY old so be prepared. He is a really nice guy an the paper is easy.
A student could not make a scheduled one-on-one (for paper topic discussion) because he had to go to his job. Professor Johannigsmeier responded to this with: "Have you thought about dropping the class?" While we were more than halfway through the semester. He did not believe this to be a rhetorical question.
This professor is not interested in teaching this class as described (History of the US 1865-present). He is interested in teaching History of the US 1890-1910. He's a very nice man, not an organized lecturer, but grades mostly on reading comprehension so a good grade is not too hard to get. Plenty of extra credit available.
This man is so educated and he is so passionate about film history its adorable. He's quite old and he tends to fill his lectures with "umm.." and "uhhh" but if you can get past that he has some very insightful things to say. Very light class load, a midterm, and exam, and an essay with some discussions. If you pay attention to the films its easy.
This professor is extremely monotone and sitting in his 3 hour class was one of the most painful experiences. No grades only consisted of exams which was not an accurate representation of the class. Do not reccomend taking this class or any class with this professor.
History through film course teaches you history in an interesting way. The assigned movies were good and the class well organized aside from a few tech blips. I recognize that some might find his lecturing a bit dry, but the guy is both very nice and very smart. Don't expect a light show, just make an effort and you'll do well. Good course.
Make sure you get some caffeine in your system or something to keep you awake. Class is often discussion based but he tends to lead the discussions and can talk at a slow steady pace, not to say what he is talking about isn't interesting. Sometimes because of his intelligence what he says can be kinda hard to process but none the less a good prof.
He's a very good lecturer and can teach material well. The course was a lot of reading, so have fun doing that.
Truly interesting history seminar class about John F. Kennedy. I'll join other reviewers in noting that Prof. Johanningsmeier is all of the following: super-smart, super-nice, and sometimes kind of dry. But if you actually did the work for this class so generally knew what he was talking about during the sessions, the course was satisfying.
Not an easy A but not a particularly hard A either. His lectures are not that useful and are kinda tangent-y, so just go to class and do other work. As long as you read the text book chapters youll be fine. Make sure to do the study guides before the tests. Probably not the best professor for this class, but hes passionate and willing to help you
I took Dr J for a 60s history course and don't loved it. He's a very smart and nice man with a passion for history. That being said, he can be a bit shy and soft spoken, so sit in the front. Class is all lecture and discussion, so do the readings and come prepared with questions. Grades are all based on essays and writing-based exams we had online.
I'd 100% recommend watching all the films he has just because they are integral to the exams. 1 midterm, 1 final and 1 essay. But all are super easy as long as you pay attention, remember character names, and themes.
Prof. is intelligent and has a lot of knowledge on the topics but his lectures can be very boring at times (film class so 3hrs long). Attendance not req. but I would recommend just going and doing work during the time. Def important to watch the req. movies and do most readings or you won't do very well, overall I actually enjoyed this class a lot!
Do not take this class unless u are actually interested in old films. 3 hour lecture that will bore u if ur anything but a film geek. He's a sweet man and wants u to do good in the class but i would not recommend.
Personally I didn't like this class it was rediculously long and he was boring to me, he's a nice guy but I had a hard time staying awake. If you take this class don't just watch the movies like I did, REALLY pay attention to what's going on and make deeper connections in order to do extremely well on the exams.
Johanningsmeier's class was good but sometimes mind-numbing. He seems like a professor who knows what he's talking about but feels unorganized lecture-wise. Doesn't use PowerPoint and will just straight talk; definitely need to read the text for quizzes. He will just rely upon the reading. Studders a lot like he's thinking about what to say next.
Two papers, three exams, and sooo many reading quizzes. Grading was strange in my opinion, I received the same exact number grade on every exam and essay. Reading quizzes were graded somewhat harshly, if you didn't write exactly what he wanted to see you wouldn't get an A even if you proved you read
2 exams, 1 large paper, and a few canvas discussion posts. Prof was not the most engaging lecturer, but he was very sweet and always willing to discuss or answer questions with students. Highly recommend this class to anyone who needs an easy breadth. The readings were not necessary.
This film-focused history course can be dry, but the professor is passionate and the movies are fascinating. Engage with the content, and tools like Unstuck AI can help you ace the exams and essays.
He's in general a really really nice guy and teacher. But the fact that the midterm was multiple in class short essays written on a piece of paper is kind of inconvenient and difficult. Plus the class time is 3 hours, I wouldn't wish a 3 hour class on any student regardless. That's not the professors fault it's an issue with the course structure.
He's a nice guy but the class is really hard due to the 3 hour length. Exams are mainly paper written short essays, so be prepared to read or you won't do that well. That said, Professor is really nice and wants you to succeed. Attendance is not mandatory for every class, but I'd suggest at least staying for the lectures.
