Cool guy. I recommend the class. Rumors about his long tests are no joke, but if you study well then you'll do fine. I actually think it's easier (and definitely better organized) than Cell Biology.
I just got out of a four hour test for his class. His tests are no joke. To succeed, take good notes and review them constantly. On the plus side, there are few homework assignments and readings.
He covers most of the important basic materials on prokaryotic molecular biology but still covers fairly reasonable amount of eukariotic MB. Don't forget what you learn in this class, its a key to sucess for all your biologists out there who is going to take this class.
The guy knows ALL of the minutiae of prokaryotic biology. So he expects you to, too. Write down every word he says--and all he says are facts he will probably test you on--and recopy your notes nightly, or the tests will kill you.
Very well organized. Lecture notes can all be done in outline format, and he warns you if something will take up an entire page. Because of this he will test exclusively from the notes (which can be quite detailed). Know your notes and you'll enjoy the class. Also, invest in a pen with different ink colors.
If you're reading this, you probably have no choice whether to take Loechler's class. Lucky for you he's great. More than anyone else I've had, he stays up-to-date on the science - you'll probably learn stuff that was just discovered half a yr ago. Tests are long, but fair - 100% written and 100% from notes (don't buy the book). Curve is generous.
most organized and clear professor i've had so far. there is a lot of memorization, however, the tests are as direct as it gets. know your notes and you will get an A (copying them over helps).
This class is amazing. and really hard, esp the tests. 6 years after taking this class I'm entering med school and I've retained what I learned in his class. Probably the best class I've ever taken.
prof. loechler is the man! this class is easy if you attend class, pay attention, and memorize his notes. there's not much more to it than that. though a little condescending in office hours, just don't ask stupid questions and you'll be fine.
Professor is really unhelpful & horrible teacher. Teaching does not equal directly copying your own notes onto a blackboard. The good news is that it's possible to do well as the test comes directly from the notes & there is a huge curve(I wonder why)but hmwk is tricky & he's not helpful during O.H., could care less if u get it, you're on your own
This course is for people who have prior knowledge of Molecular Biology. Professor Loechler manages to sum up a large amount of diverse material in a concise way that allows you to revise the material effectively. Information is given in a highly ordered and dry manner. Professor's behavior during exams may seem intimidating.
Extremely clear and organized. He genuinely want you to learn and will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material. The test had no surprises but was definitely tough. Study and you will do fine as there was an enormous curve. One of the best and most thoughtful teachers I've encountered.
Way better than Celenza's portion of the course. He outlines exactly what you are responsible on the board. Copy that down and understand it, and you'll be fine. Noncumulative tests and no final, so the quantity of info is manageable even though it gets pretty detailed. Lecture was fine but a bit slow paced-ideal for multitasking.
Loechler has a great style of teaching, is thoughful about student schedules, and will answer your questions. The only thing that bothered me was his tendency to be pushy about political stances, global warming and intelligent design. Once he said some inappropriate things in class, but is generally on task and fair on grading.
The only problem I had with this class was that I didn't learn anything in lecture - this is because he writes pretty fast and I'm focusing on copying everything down. His exams are fair and quite easy if you study your notes, with the one exception being Part 3 on the exams which was very challenging in my opinion. But there is a generous curve!
The curve is nice, but he makes it hard for one to improve. There is a glass ceiling between the B and A ranges. It is also way too much information for one course, so you end up not really learning anything.
Really clear about what you need to know and willing to explain things until you understand. Tests can be tough, but there aren't any surprises. He's also really receptive to feedback about the class from his students. Overall, a great professor.
A fair grader, and there are no surprises on his tests. Responds well and is willing to reexplain difficult concepts, but lectures can be a bit dry. He knows however how to present large amounts of information in an organized manner better than anyone else.
A nice guy and helpful during office hours. Understands when the class is struggling with difficult concepts, and can present large amounts of information in a succinct and organized way.
Helpful when in a good mood. Class has too much material. Some arbitrary. Plenty of memorization. Go to class & take good notes! Recopy them & make protein lists to prepare for exams. Memorize figures. Read the papers (fair game on exams) & participate in discussion. HW is hard - go to office hours. Do all that & (with the curve) you'll get an A
On his last day he said "its been a pleasure-" and the whole room "awwwww"'d and gave him a round of applause. If that doesn't say it all...
He is very approachable and has one of the most straightforward lectures in any BU class. Show up, learn material, memorize and you will be fine.
Lectures were clear. He made an outline of everything he would say which was really helpful. The exam had so hard question but they eventually did not count. Clicker quizzes were also easy!
Loechler is amazing, but be prepared to memorize like crazy for exams. Don't bother buying the textbook, because everything he wants you to know comes directly from his lectures (no ppt, all blackboard) and from the primary literature you'll read for discussion. Memorize your notes and go to office hours for homework answers. His curve is generous.
I found this class to be easier than BI 206. He is really clear about what will be on the exam and doesn't try to trick you at all. The exams aren't multiple choice which I found to be easier than Celenza's multiple choice exams. He records his lectures but I recommend going to class. Overall this is a great class and I recommend it.
Take notes his way, and youre set.
Prof Loechler was very clear in lecture, he writes exactly what he wants you to know. He doesn't pull information he didn't talk about for the exam. He's the only professor that will come to study sessions and basically help guide you on how to study and what to focus more on. He's awesome and a genuinely nice guy. Pay attention in class to pass.
Who doesn't love Professor Loechler?! Keeps your interest during lecture and is just a really great guy overall. The material is definitely tough, but he is great at clarifying things if you ask him to. Awesome curve on exams too!
HA! Easiest class taken so far in Biology. He tells you exactly what you need for the exam. Attendance for lecture is a must. I didn't do well in this class because I didn't study at all for the exam.
He was okay better than monette but his lectures were never very clear and always asked random small details in the test
Best Biology Professor I've had out of all the 107 and 108 professors. He explains topics clearly, tells you exactly what he wants, and helps you out big time with lecture quizzes and personal notes for exam. Could not speak more highly of Prof Loechler. If you study his notes, take your own, and read the lecture slides you are golden.
He truly cares about his students. He comes when the LA does review sessions which I thought was nice. :)
Loechler is the best! Super clear in lecture, not boring either. Stimulates interest in the subject.
Loechler is a really nice guy. He was super easy. Tested directly from his notes. Only problem... I felt like I didn't learn any Biology. He taught us very specific things that he wanted us to know but when anyone asked a question on anything deeper than the covered material he would say "Lets save that for office hours"
Easy, easy, easy. Its an intensive course because the exams are written. However, Loechler makes them copy paste of what he says in class so basically if you memorize your notes, youll get the A for sure. WRITE GOOD NOTES.
if you do not have to take this class for your major, i suggest you don't. too much material, and if you don't memorize the notes verbatim, you will not do well. he made interesting topics boring and abuses discussion section to just lecture more. if he isnt in a good mood, he's rude (has closed the door in my face before). hw is hard!
This class sounded like it came straight out of a nightmare, but it's actually not that bad. There are 3 exams (not cumulative). If you are good at memorizing, you should be able to score at least 70/100 points. The other 30 points actually require thinking. I like how he writes on the chalkboard instead of bolting through powerpoints slides :)
This guy is literally the best. He teaches you exactly what to you need to know. Lecture style is fantastic; methodical, slow-paced, and comprehensive. He's also so funny as a person, and pretty interesting overall. This guy is a bro
Fantastic professor. Lectures are very organized/clear and exams are fair. He tells you exactly what you need to know. He is also a very nice guy who genuinely wants his students to succeed. The course is difficult but he gives you everything you need to do well if you're willing to put in the work.
My third course with Ed and I can only say good things. Seems so intimidating but is genuinely the BEST prof I've interacted with at BU. If you work hard for MolBio you will get an A. All it takes is good, planned out memorization of all of his material. Fantastic notes, cares about students. Try for discussion/HW as its easy-earned.
He is very understanding of grades and is willing to work with his students. Make sure you go to lecture because his tests are straight from his lecture note. One the best professors Ive ever had!
Boring class, required for my major, fairly good professor overall. Clear about what will be on tests. Go to office hours
His lectures were very specific but he never explained the topic in a broad way which was very confusing. His notes make no sense looking back on them and his tests were unnecessarily difficult.
I don't understand why some people complain about Dr. Loechler. You won't find another Prof who cares as much as him. He is impartial with every test and is truly an advocate for the students. His notes are super helpful and you only fail if you don't put in the effort. I wouldn't have taken 108 with any other Prof.
Incredibly condescending (overshadows the fact that he's "nice"). Exams are long, full of mistakes, detailed, and test you on specific information that does not reflect an actual understanding of genetics. Likes to draw pictures that make no sense. Completely ruined genetics for me. Not looking forward to future courses with Ed.
I really liked how he was clear on what we would be expected to know for the tests. He's a bit of a boring lecturer but he writes out the notes for us so that is really nice
The only way that you couldn't do well in this class would be if you didn't attend a single lecture. He writes the notes out for you! Everything you need to know is written in his notes. The drawbacks are, though, that he does get specific in his notes at times and expects you to know those specifics. He also only teaches the first half of BI108.
Loechler appears to be a nice guy, but sometimes he is super condescending and his exams are kind of cruel. They often had so many mistakes that it wasn't even clear what the exam was asking. Very thankful I don't have to take another class with him.
Mol Bio is taught so poorly. Loechler just throws out facts and expects you to memorize them without even understanding the material. All he does in lecture is copy down notes, and then students just copy it down from the projector. This means that you spend the whole time so focused on writing notes, that you dont understand any of the material.
Explains all material thoroughly without being confusing. You will need to memorize a LOT of material, but he makes taking notes and learning very easy during his lectures. Good professor, material-dense and somewhat difficult class. His exams are long and hard, but if you spend enough time studying you will do fine. Nice guy overall.
this class comes from hell. don't take if you don't have to. exams are horribly long and crazy difficult where you you just give up at the end. though questions worth 30 points of the exam that most people get wrong because theres truly no answer for them. Nic professor but difficult exams that cost you your grade
Really great prof. Not universally liked, but he tells you what's on the exam and gives quizzes on his lectures every Monday. Very clear about grading and knows his stuff.
He is one of the kindest professors ever and he really cares about his students. However, his exams are very specific so make sure to memorize ALL the details from the notes. The good thing is, he writes out all the notes. Just make sure to get it down word for word--don't skip ANYTHING. Helps if you already have a solid biology background.
Edward L. Loechler is the man. He literally writes out the notes for you so there's no excuse for not knowing something. There's really no trick questions on the exams, so just be ready to take good notes (from his) and study those. Apart from that, was the only 107/108 professor so far who went to review sessions and held extra ones, which I liked
Prof. Loechler is a super easy teacher for BI108. Easy meaning with dedicated work, you'll easily get an A. He is very transparent about what to study, about what will be on the exam/quizzes, and about what you need for success. Spilios might go over more information in her lectures, but Loechler is a more manageable professor.
what a kind professor. very thorough and well-paced lectures. posts the class notes and slides, and also has study materials. lets you know what's on upcoming quizzes and exams
One of the nicest professors at this University! This class was hard, you are expected to put in the time and learn every single detail, however, Loechler's unconventional lecture style makes it easy to learn and memorize these topics. If you try hard you will get an A in this course.
This guy is a gem. Amazing lecturer and breaks concepts down so that they are much easier to understand. He actually made his own notes during the lecture and had us copy them down so we knew exactly what to study and could focus more while he was lecturing rather than stressing about what to copy down.
Everything a professor SHOULD be! Very thorough in his lectures and moves at a slow pace so that everyone can succeed, not just the privileged kids who took all AP's in high school. Tries to help students in every possible way but you still have to put in the effort to pass (as it should be). One of the few good profs left at BU who teaches well
Professor Loechler explains the material with powerpoint and then writes everything down again as notes. This seems redundant to me, but his notes are definitely useful for studying. His test questions can be confusing most of the time because of the wording, so you have go through all the material (ppt, ppt text, notes, txtbk) to get an A.
Professor loechler is my favourite professor Ive had at BU so far. His lecture style is amazing because he explains with slides so we can listen and then we write it down. His exams are fair; every single question comes straight from his notes. Im just sad he doesnt teach the second part of the bi108.
Loechler is a G. He writes out the notes for everything you will need for the tests so be sure to go to class. He also does an amazing job at explaining complex concepts. Very smart, super sweet, wish I had him for the whole year.
He tells you what you need to know for the exams; just attend lectures and copy the notes/outline he writes and you should be fine. Know everything that he writes down for the exams, yes even that more obscure thing. The class was easy and a bit boring at times because the lecture goes very slowly, but overall, it was fine. And I would take again.
I really liked the way he taught in lecture. He would go over the powerpoint slides and then switch to writing notes down which he projected on the board. This made it easier for us students because he only wrote down info we needed to know. Throughout the lecture, he always checked to make sure we understood everything. Overall 8/10
Prof. Loechler is so caring and accessible outside of lectures. His lectures are recorded so they are easy to look back to. He does not curve down on grades even if the median is like 93.
Highly recommended! He's the best. The pace of the class is super manageable, and all of the lectures material is from his notes! He lectures, then write the note down in class, then posts both the slides and notes on Blackboard. Could not ask for more.
Great professor, breaks down notes to the key concepts that are needed for the test, will answer questions during lectures and is willing to explain concepts multiple ways so students understand.
If you're debating whether to take Loechler + Tolan for BI108 or Spilios, just take Spilios. But that doesn't change the fact I loved the way Loechler did his lectures because they were very clear and engaging. Wonderful professor.
The BI 108 professors from best to worst are: Loechler, Spillios, Tolan. I absolutely love Loechler, but for some reason Tolan takes over after the second midterm and he sucks. While Loechler is amazing, I would recommend just taking Spillios because she's consistently decent and you won't have to change note taking styles mid semester.
He is the best BI108 teacher there is. Tolan switches over after Spring Break though and the difference in note taking/learning style is enough for me to recommend you take Spilios for BI108. For Loechler, study EVERYTHING he gives you. Every word is fair game for his tests and the tests WILL be hyper specific sometimes. Easy tests if you do that.
Prof Loechler gives organised, easy to understand, notes which is basically all you need for the exams. No textbook needed. He's funny and enthusiastic in keeping students engaged. Explanations are a bit lacking as there is too much emphasis on notes and syllabus.
Loechler is genuinely such a gem. Molecular bio is hard, but his online exams are open note. He made a lecture outline for students to organize their notes exactly as he goes over them in lecture and leads all the discussion sections. You can tell he cares about his students, and he's super nice 1 on 1.
In this course, Prof Loechler simply lists all the most detailed facts about mol bio into bullet points and expect you to remember everything. Taking the course is just copy-pasting details without demonstrating one's understanding about the subject. The application questions on exams are very unclear to me. DO NOT take this course unless necessary
Professor Loechler is very well known in the biology department as he teaches some of the most commonly taken courses, but this is a very good thing. Loechler very clearly explains topics in lecture and teaches by writing out notes for students to copy as their study aid. It is extremely helpful!! Loechler really cares for his students' success!
If you have to take BI108, you can't go wrong with Loechler! All lectures comprise of him writing his own notes and the class copying them. He lectures while doing this, and manages to make a large volume of material concise and interesting! He is very accessible and truly cares about his students. He was even available to call during the midterm!
Loechler handfed us material. Kind of material heavy but was straightforward. Weekly quizzes, not too sure I liked the swap professors after midterm 1. Was okay, basic biology you learn in AP Biology until the second half of the semester. Was kind of boring as he repeated himself a lot, but was probably trying to drill information into our heads.
His lectures and note-taking styles are just not helpful for taking the exams. Read your book if you take his lectures.
Loechler is honestly one of the kindest and in my opinion the overall best professor in the Bio dept. He teaches by going through a PowerPoint and then going over everything a second time by writing out the notes you should take with a document camera. This method really helped me grasp the material better, and it was clear whats on exams
Prof Loechler is an amazing guy and I enjoyed his lec style for BI108 and 216, but not for 552. He writes notes that you copy. That's it. No ppt or anything. For 552 concepts, more focus on explanation or using videos/images would have been nicer. Also expected to memorize a crazy amount of minute details, however there's a very generous curve
BI552 is definitely not a class for those who are not prepared to memorize a TON of information. But, Professor Loechler really makes this interesting. The pathways and his knowledge of the material is truly inspiring. Would definitely take this class again! I think the way we take notes is great - everything you will need to know is in them
Professor Loechler was an incredible teacher for BI108. He gives strong lectures and is clearly passionate about biology, always willing to support student learning, both in and out of the lecture hall. Attendance is not recorded but absolutely necessary as everything on the tests is said in class. So pay attention, take notes, and you'll do well.
Loechler is great! Although participation is not mandatory, you better go to lectures since everything on his lecture notes can be on exams. Super funny and entertaining, but he only taught half of the course:(
Professor Loechler is an amazing person and lecturer. His lecture style is easy to follow and understand and straight to the point. He is great at accommodating to what the students need and always shows up with a smile on his face.
Professor Loechler is a rare sort that is both competent at the material and caring that his students actually learn it. He is extremely well organized, communicates clearly, and able to present the material in a digestible way. To do well attend all classes and read the notes he provides online before going into the lecture. It will pay off.
I love Loechler! He literally writes out the notes during lecture and you basically just have to memorize the notes he wrote, and you will get an A. I would take any class with him again!
The class is based mostly on memorization and is not conducive to learning. Rather than understanding concepts, doing well on the exams is achieved by memorizing and being able to reproduce pages upon pages of notes and figures. You memorize everything for the day of the test and then quickly forget it. I wish it was more concept based.
He was great for 108 and 216, 552 is another thing altogether. The HW is downright confusing and exams are difficult/very unique. He's tough to read, sometimes unapproachable and mean, but is a good person. There are few online references and he teaches by rewriting his notes on the board which students are expected to have impeccably memorized.
Professor Loechler is an amazing professor He writes down the notes with the students after explaining the concept, which makes it convenient and easy to follow along for the students. He also holds review sessions on his own and answers questions along w office hrs. He is also entertaining and funny!I can tell he rly cares about the students
Speak a little bit slowly, but all the quizzes are based on lecture notes. He literally wrote down everything you need to know for the tests. Study notes, and you will succeed.
Very boring lectures because he goes slow but the notes that he writes out allows you to easily study content! Everything on notes is on test but it can be any small detail! Good for memorizers and not so good for people who like to deeply understand content and learn it well!
Lectures move slowly, Loechler hand writes all of his notes in lecture and will never quiz you on something that wasn't presented in lecture. Lectures can be a little boring but if you put in some effort you will get the grade you want.
Love Loechler! Such an amazing professor! Definitely take his class!
He is the reason why BI 216 is so much better than the dry and boring BI 206. His lectures are so easy to follow and he always records them so you don't have to come to class. Homeworks and exams are mainly straightforward. If you know everything that's in his notes, you're guaranteed an A.
love prof loechler! he draws out everything which was great for me as a visual learner. everything in his ppts are expected to be on the quizzes too. DO HIS PRACTICE QUIZZES! nearly identical to his actual ones. also go to S2S tutors / their review sessions, they help a lot too. he only teaches for the 1st half of the semester tho :(
I had Loechler for the first half of BI108. He is amazing with explaining this that are very complex like some processes of metabolism. He basically takes both notes for us and we follow along. The best thing is his office hours, his quiz reviews, and most important practice problems. The practice problems for the quiz are the same.
Extremely difficult class, so I would only recommend taking it if you are interested in mol bio or it's a degree requirement. Besides that, the class is amazing, and Prof. Loechler keeps his lectures very up-to-date with current research. Great paper discussions too. His tests are difficult (memorization heavy), but very doable if you prepare well.
Lectures go slow, since he copies notes from the slides, so we didn't cover as much as other BI108 sections and missed some concepts. Goes more surface level than other BI108 lecturers. Tests were extremely similar to practice questions, as they were purely memorization based than application, which I would have preferred and better for learning.
Based on the reviews I read I thought the class was going to be great. Guess what...not so much. Prof L is a good guy and I have nothing against his teaching style but his class is just boring and memorization heavy which is evident in his quizzes and the half empty class midway through the sem. If you prefer application based quizzes, take Spilios
Super difficult, kinda generous grade borders. I recieved the lowest grades I've ever gotten at BU in this course, but once I got in the "groove" of how to study for his tests it got a little more manageable. Many details to memorize, including figures (which was very difficult as a non visual learner). AVOID if you're not a bio CMG major.
Super nice and considerate honestly
Great guy, super nice, has a lot of personality. BI 552 is a pretty tuff class in terms of content but the expectations are clear. He gives you a study strategy that applies to all of his exams. Don't feel overwhelmed by the difficulty of exams, the grades go all over the place so he helps out with a generous curve where needed.
This course was very challenging as there is a lot of content to memorize and digest. However, Dr. Loechler made this course survivable. The exam curves were generous and you knew exactly what to study as he has a very organized "class outline" with all the information you would need. He cares about students' success and is overall a cool guy.
Incredible professor.
