He is awesome and funny. His class was so interesting. He is a ball buster. His exams are essay questions, but they were so easy. Just make sure you attend lectures and take notes.
You must be insane who ever wrote the previous comment. This guy is so hard. UNLESS you are as smart as a scientist who is ready for your PHD. His TWO essay question tests are insane, and extreemly hard, he expects you to know everything on the topic, even if he never told you about it, and its not in your book. Dont take if you dont need to....
Totally agreed. He's super hard. He may be funny and down to earth but his tests are HARD!
Do not take him unless you LOVE geology! The 1st comment must have been written by the professor himself because that's not true.
horrible teacher although he seems like a nice guy his tests are extremely hard; you must really be interested in the subject to pass the class; and if you need to talk to him he never seems to be avaible or as pleasant as he appears in class
Most unhelpful professor I have ever had! I had never failed a test in college until his class. I went to his office hours for help after failing the test and was yelled at! He told me i failed the test because i was a communications major, he made me cry. I was THRILLED to end up with a C+ in his class. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE IF POSSIBLE!
I took History of Life and Earth with him last summer and it was one of the most interesting science classes I have ever had. It was also my first A in a science class that I can remember.
Terrible professor! I took him over the summer. He tries to cram an entire textbook of info into you. His tests consist of two very broad questions. He is not clear on what he expects you to know for exams leaving you to study an entire book for 2 questions. Very hard. Not reccomended. Do not take unless you are/ plan to be a geology major or minor
I took his class over the summer and I liked him. He's a little scatter brained but he has tons of stories and is entertaining. We got to take a class vote whether we had essay or multiple choice tests, and his multiple choice tests were very easy, if you studies. He really loves what he teaches.
best teacher i've ever had! i took paleontology with him, as an elective, and it was the best class i've ever taken.he grades on improvement so even if you fail a test, you can make it up. on my first test i got a 10/100, and wound up with an A in the end. go to the classes and study and you'll do fine. he loves the subject and makes you love it to
This has to be one of the FUNNIEST professors on campus. However he is pretty hard. On my first test I got a 17 out of 100, so I later came up with a formula to pass his class. TAKE EXTREMELY GOOD NOTES AND MEMORIZE EVERYTHING FROMT HOSE NOTES. He is the type of professor that wants you to know it all. Just follow my "formula" and you'll do fine!
Forget about him. Take someone else if you can. He is the type of professor that thinks that being hard on your students makes you a better professor. and that everyone is, well... never mind. Be good to yourself, and look elsewhere.
Awesome professor! I loved this class. I learned so much and found the Dr. Petuch to be informative, incredibly knowledgeable, and very personable. I got an A and took a ton of notes, made the flashcards and sat up front. Bring colored pencils to the exams! :)
in class super outside not so good
This class was a good one, at that you just need to make sure you attend all classes and take notes. Book is not even needed. He doesn't count the first exam if you coninually improve, which most students do. Overall, it was work, but I learned a lot and it was enjoyable. He is a good prof.
He's not SO TOUGH - I have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST IN ROCKS and I managed a B in the class - DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK! Just go to EVERY class and take AMAZING NOTES .. He's funny and HATES late-ness and talking .. Worst comes to worst, invite him to have a Beer with you :) Heard that REALLY HELPS
The book was helpful but you need to be in class for his lectures. His teaching style is refreshing because he writes everything on the board. No boring powerpoints. He loves what he does. I do not agree with his method of testing but if you show up to class and make an effort you will get an A. Field trips are optional but very fun.
He is very funny and engaging in his lectures. There were 3 tests of 30 questions each so not a lot of opportunity for grades. All questions are from lecture - book is NOT needed. He HATES latecomers so be on time. Take copious notes. The language he uses on the test is tricky and hard. I was interested and learned a lot. I recommend him.
Petuch is AWESOME! But you have to attend every class as all exam questions come DIRECTLY from his notes. Don't be late, but if you are late say "There was bad traffic." This class may be challenging at first but it will definitely make you want to be geology major seeing how passionate he is. BTW check him out on monster quest on history channel
Be on time for this class and stay quiet throughout. Dr. Petuch doesn't like interruptions. Exams are from material from lectures, text recommended for material reinforcement. Very funny teacher, makes class more interesting than what already is. I loved having him as a teacher.
I do NOT recamend taking this class unless you have to. he changes test days randomly making them SOONER than suppost to and he does not care as to what you have to say. His tests are strait from his notes, but his notes cover many many chapters. If you are a good note taker than you'll do fine in the class, but he is a horribal teacher.
He was a great teacher, you must absolutely take superb notes! And flash cards really help as well, tests were easy if you studied. Even though he moved UP the test, making it sooner and sometimes tested us on words we never learned, I managed to get an A on every test. Bottom Line: Flash cards + ALOT of studying = A+
Go to every class, sit in the front, take good notes && make flash cards to help you study. 2 exams && a final which is somewhat cumulative even though he says its not. The tests were a bit hard and Petuch was inconsiderate at times but overall the class was okay.
Entertaining... but hard to follow. He gives a heads up that the notes he writes on the board is crucial, but his notes are EVERYWHERE and he tends to stray off topic horribly. The best way to survive this class is to make friends in it and compare notes.
he is all over the place,he starts off the class telling you that the bible is Bull Shiz.I tried to talk to him after class,he spent 20 min with another student,talking..no, braggin about his family so i never got a word in.Coastal Marine science?more like the world according to Petuch, no evidence to back anything up he did talk about drinking org
you have to take REALLY GOOD notes in his class.the book isn't needed but it helps because sometimes he only says words and u need the definitions.make friends and compare notes.goes off topic a SHIT TON and u have no idea of the stuffs on the test or not. otherwise, kinda funny... just needs to be more straightforward
I don't reccomend this professor. He tries his best to entertain his class so I understand why people may like him but I think he's rude and closeminded. If you like Geology then you may like him. If not, the tests are ridiculous and short. There is no review and he takes pride in failing students. Dont be late.
Dr. Petuch is the kind of professor that needs to be cloned. He's hilarious, chops up a dry subject with audience-targeted jokes to make it interesting, and he's fair. Study hard, NEVER miss a class or show up late, take good notes, and keep your wits/good humor about you. Don't take if you love your Biblical stories and can't take a joke. A+ !!
I feel bad for who ever decides to take this class, worst class i have ever taken in my life. im a straight a student and got a d. take my word for it. you will regret it if you dont
One of the worst professor?s ever! Many people were failing his class and he didn?t care or give them any chance to improve their grades. He tried to be funny but he goes off topic a lot. His tests cover many chapters and there are very few questions on the test. Do not be late to his class or watch out. Avoid taking his class unless you have to.
Very funny. Notes are all over the place and he draws lots of pictures that are very confusing. For me, I used the textbook more than the notes and got a B in the class. Although the tests were difficult, this is pretty standard for college intro level courses. Just study, read the book and dont be lazy and you should do fine. Religious jokes =)
I have taken two of Petuch's class's, yes his test are very hard, but you can usually figure what he's going to put on if you attend class. Don't ever come late you will get called out just don't come and he makes class go by fast, very funny. Notes are crazy but you have to learn how to read every professor. ITS COLLEGE!!! not high school
Dr. Petuch is a funny guy. He is really nice too. The material is easy as well. As long as you go to class, a B is easy. Any effort and an A isn't hard either. His class is fun and I learned more than in most of my other classes. I even changed my major to Geology.
Awesome class. He likes to go on random tangents and gets distracted easily. I would recommend his class, he is an awesome teacher.
If you have any religious beliefs avoid his classes. Every class had at least 15 mins of hating on religions and the Bible. He goes off topic all the time which is fun but then speeds through the class info which makes it hard to understand. He also writes all of his notes on the board which makes him really unorganized. I wouldnt take him again
If you're contemplating dropping his class before this Friday - DO IT! His class is horrible. Don't bother buying the text book, he doesn't use it at all. He gives 3 exams and that's it! I really wanted to like his class, he tries to keep it interesting, however he makes it too hard.
I found after his first class how truly interested in the material he was. He made the material interesting. He tends to get sidetracked but he keeps the class interesting with his enthusiasm. If you study and go to class, the tests are no problem.
just show up. he doesnt take roll but he knows if u have been there. if you love the ocean or marine environments he will amaze you with knowledge. 3 exams only, so study the notes written on the board.
His digressions are interesting, but this class was near impossible. Unless you have hours to devote to going to SI study sessions, it isn't worth it. The 3 tests don't include most of what he has you write down, and he flips out whenever someone is late or talking and takes 30 mins to get back on topic. Nice guy, but avoid this class at all costs!
I have taken all of Dr. Petuch's classes. Many of you don't understand what an honor it is to have him as a professor. Think of him as the modern day Linnaeus. Having named thousands of species, he wants us to be able to do the same. Have a beer and get to know him, don't show up late, take good notes, major in geology and you will be fine!
Although his tangents and he himself are interesting, I found the class to be almost impossible. I took this class at another university but it didnt transfer, I got an A there but I cant say the same for Petuch's class. His tests dont always correspond with lectures or SI Review tests. Word of advice, DO NOT EVER BE LATE, he will call you out.
He is brilliant and loves what he does! He makes class interesting but it an extremely difficult class!! Take as many notes as possible and makes note cards for every little thing! Only 30 question tests, making it harder to pass. He knows when you're there but no attendance. BEST ADVICE: GO TO EVERY SI SESSION!!! IT'S AS IMPORTANT AS CLASS TO PASS
Mr Petuch is the best professor I ever had. extraordinary knowledge about the subject and the world at large. studying for this class I learned the whole load of history, politics, religion, chemistry, physics, philosophy and so on. however the exams are extremely hard 2-3 question (hint:to get an A) are based on your understanding not memorizing
I am studying my second career and I can honestly say that I have been lucky to have some of the best professors in key disciplines but none as remarkable as Dr. Petuch. FAU students should consider ourselves lucky to have a man of such encyclopedic knowledge willing to share it here. Dr. Petuch is a professor of IVY league stature.
Dearsweetmotherofbabyjesus. Best. Professor. EVER. The man loves what he does and his passion is infectious. Some say he's random, but if he didn't go off on tangents (which will tie in to the material, btw) the class would be beyond boring. You need to study and take DAMN good notes. He's a real professor, no powerpoints. Very funny guy. Brilliant
One of the best professors I've ever had. He keeps his lectures based on the material, despite his stories, and only writes on the board what's important. His stories are based on his experiences, which are worth paying attention to. Take notes based on the board and study, you won't go wrong.
Hands down one of the best professors in the ENTIRE school. Show up on time or he will call you out on it. only 3 exams, but will only test you on what he writes on the board. He's very enthusiastic to pass of his knowledge of the subject, and makes the material interesting. Highly suggest going on any field trips he plans during the semester.
Rare to find a teacher this good at FAU. Would take this class if you are interested in acquiring knowledge. If you want to slack off you might want to consider another class. All in all attending lectures on time is important but not mandatory, may be crucial to passing class as with any class where you actually learn during lecture.
Great professor, very knowledgeable and interesting. Watch for last test. SI reviewed entire lecture from test 2. Still failed because he tested on stuff that didnt matter. Watch that test!
He is a horrid teacher. He has stormed out of class. He rants about gov't conspiracies. He mumbles when he is lecturing. His solution to everything is to drop his class. He said that he didnt even want to teach the class. I learned nothing. The only thing that kept me alive in that class was SI. DONT TAKE HIS CLASSES!!
I've recently finished taking all of the classes Dr. Petuch teaches at FAU. Going to miss them. He's a fantastic professor, and the only reason anyone would fail his class is for not showing up, not taking notes, and/or not studying at ALL for his tests. He teaches at the university level, so if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.
Great teacher. Petuch knows just about everything including languages. You will learn a lot in this class, however if you dont study hard you will fail. 60% of my class failed and has to retake the class. Fun but hard...P.S. don't get on his bad side...show up on time, don't disrupt class...he is also very funny
This professor is unprofessional. During the Spring semester of 2012 he stormed out of the classroom twice. He mentioned several times of how FAU caused him to loose his house. He is reminding the class that he only has 4 fours left and that he does not like to teach GLY 2010 for his other colleagues is out having fun and he gets stuck with us.
great teacher, so smart he knows what he is doing; great as a teacher doesnt like religion at all though
Excellent Teacher, wants everyone to pass. Exams are extremely hard, but if you pay attention and review your notes a lot, it will payoff. His class rules can be a little annoying in the beginning but he chilled out towards the end. If you don't want to be challenged, look for an alternative. He means business.
If you're looking for an easy science, this is not the guy to take. If you work hard, and go to the SI sessions, then you'll do just fine. He's very helpful in his office hours as well. Will seem strict at first, but does mellow out as the semester progresses. He was fine.
Very rude to all students, especially if they were struggling or late to class. He was also very unclear as to what would be on the (very hard) exams, stating that everything he writes on the board will be there. This was NEVER true! He also goes very quickly through lectures because he uses the rest of the time to be rude! I don't recommend him!
Very hard and boring professor! Lecture material not consistent with exams. Very rude to students, particularly latecomers and those who struggle! I don't recommend him!
Brilliant teacher, very nice to students who are actually interested, calls out latecomers and isn't afraid of what students think of him. Despises religion, often rants about it which is interesting. Recommend for students who are actually interested in science, and are not fond of religion. Go to SI sessions.
Easily my favorite class at FAU. He's extremely well educated and the class is set towards teaching you how to master memorization techniques. I recommend it to all students who are afraid of Bio or Chem!
Nobody needs to put up with a class like this. The questions on the tests are harder to understand than the outrageous amount of material you have to study ( Most of it won't even be on the only thing you are being graded for; the exams ).
Do not take his class. He organizes his tests so that even if you read and memorized the entire textbook or took another GLY class, you wouldn't pass. He tests you on very detailed but almost useless facts that he mentioned in class, not broad concepts. As a senior, I was really disgusted by his teaching style. The lab instructor was great.
You're at school to learn, so he's going to teach u, if u dont like that, take another class. 1st test there was only ONE question I didnt have on my notes so if more than half of the class fails they all need to learn to take notes and study them. He's smart, loves science, speaks several languages. He's awesome. Chris is the best lab teacher :)
The tests are unnecessarily frustrating as they are always filled with questions about the most irrelevant details of the lectures and only partially about the main concepts. Some of the questions are practically open to interpretation and are unclear. Even taking every SI session won't fully prepare you.
This guy is by far the worst teacher I've ever had in all of my years of college. No matter how much studying you do, you will never pass his tests, and you will never understand the things he says. Hes messy, unorganized, all over the place and by far the worst teacher. I have no clue how he is still a professor!
Before you take this class, ask yourself - and be honest - am I a good student and do I have any interest in science? If yes, absolutely take this class over any other to fill your science credit. If no, take chem (there's plenty of extra credit). This class is difficult, requires excellent notes, but is very rewarding. Petuch is a true professor.
Petuch honestly has knowledge about everything. He tells stories to keep class interesting. Does not use power-points and instead uses the whiteboard to write and draw things out. He loves what he's doing and Is not afraid to embarrass students who show up late. SI sessions are very helpful. Study and you'll do fine.
Not very helpful, most of lecture is boring and he constantly rants about himself or other things that don't pertain to the class. Get ready to teach yourself. Takes this course way too serious, is not punctual, and the lecture is very scattered. Take it with him only if you are dying and he's your last option !!
Honestly, this is a difficult class. He is a very nice and knowledgeable person who loves what he does, but purposely constructs very hard tests that a lot of people FAIL and 50% end up dropping out after the first test. A lot of time needs to be spent studying/attending SI sessions...ooonly take this class if you are very interested in geology.
Attend all lectures, go to SI sessions, and study your butt off to get pass his exams! He's not an easy professor.
Dr. Petuch is extremely knowledgeable, and if you attend class and study you will learn a lot. Class isn't that hard. You have three exams, which come from everything he puts up on the board. Just try not to miss class. I recommend his class as it is interesting, and is nothing too difficult.
Dr. Petuch is extremely intelligent and flaunts it. He tries to dissuade you from continuing the class if you do not do well on the first test, but it is possible to pass. Study what he writes on the board, and you will pass. SI sessions are good help if you have the time. He is worth taking if you do care about your education. DONT BE LATE.
Extremely intelligent guy and keeps his lectures fun and very interesting. That being said, he goes off on tangents for most of the lecture which can be frustrating if you really want to understand the material. 3 exams, all difficult. Kicks out late students and wont allow laptops/phones. But if you want a good laugh, this is the guy for you.
Petuch is one of the smartest people i've ever met in my life. He can tell you stories about anything and everything and has traveled everywhere. Classes are always interesting but the tests are a nightmare. I failed my first test, and although he persuades kids who failed it to drop the class, i love going to his classes too much to give up.
The professor refuses to help and his tests are very difficult. He refuses to adapt to other learning styles and all visual aids are drawings hes done on the board. H will belittle any views and opinions other than his own. Take this class if you have an photographic memory or are a geo major. Otherwise I would suggest something else.
Impossible class. Tests are so hard. Notes don't even help you study. For your own sake do not take this teacher. You will regret it. He is unclear, tests don't match up notes. Doesn't use a textbook. Goes off topic and talks about how funny he is Just don't do it.
People make this class sound like the hardest thing but honestly it is not that hard. As long as you go to class, take notes, study everything that he writes on the board, go to SI session, you will definitely pass the class. Dr Petuch is very smart and funny. He can also be mean at times but his lectures are pretty interesting
study hard!!! Everything he writes on the board is on the test. take notes, go to SI, have a good study partner, make notecards.. It isn't an easy A class, gotta work for it. but if you do those things you will definitely pass. lecture is interesting and not long. theres two 50 questions tests and a 30 questions. over 60% fail this class so study
pay attention to his diagrams that he does in class, most of his upper level geology classes are essay exams and at least one question is always a set of diagrams
I absolutely loved this class and Dr. Petuch, and I would take it again if I could! Dr. Petuch is hilarious, and very inspirational. He not only teaches the material for the course, but he tells you things about the world that you would never have known. The tests are hard, but tutoring is offered 3 times a week to help you.
Lets start with saying that Dr. Petuch is extremely intelligent and interesting professor; however, he is a bit narcissistic and will throw you out if you are late. Notes are mandatory if you want to pass a class. The material is interesting but the tests are extremely hard due to the way that questions are worded. Three exams in total and lab.
Dr. Petuch is BRILLIANT. He is what other professors should strive to be. No powerpoint, just straight lectures. He does go off on tangents, but they eventually tie in to the material. Not an easy A, but completely satisfying when you get it because you need to work for it. Go to class, take notes, make notecards, STUDY, and make sure you want it.
Fixation on disproving FSM than teaching about geological processes
Dr. Petuch is an excellent professor. He often goes on tangents during lectures but always comes back to the main topic and explains it clearly. You need to take excellent notes during his lectures in order to get a good grade on the exams, which are tough. Material is not spoon-fed, as this is a true university course. You need to work for the A.
Dr. Petuch is a genius and does a good job on making his lectures interesting and he warns his class on the first day that it's not an easy course. He tells his students that everything he writes on the board will be on the exam. On the first exam, I memorized about 80% of the material he put on the board and got an F. Don't take this class.
Great professor. If you don't do anything for the entire semester, attend his lectures and TAKE GREAT NOTES. Bring a recorder. Things on the test are right from his lectures, but he doesn't write it ALL on the board, its mostly what he SAYS. Sometimes gets off topic and can get upset, but he has a great way of teaching and keeps things interesting.
Thought it would be a great elective because he is a genius-- it was a nightmare. Grading criteria is unclear; you can do horribly on tests and get an A, or do great on tests and fail. Unforgiving/insensitive. Participation seems to count more than anything. Att. isn't mandatory, but GO. Tests off of lectures which are VERY hard to follow. Dropped.
