He spends 5/6 of the time discussing current events and their relation to what we are studying, which is great, because we get extra credit for discussion. HOWEVER, when it comes test time that is not on the test. Only take him if you can learn the subject on your own. But he's very funny...

HORRIBLE TEACHER

This teacher is the worst. He doesnt teach in his class he just talks about current events. He wont ever teach you anything about the actual subject and things you will need to know for the test. Only take this teacher if you are some sort of super genious and like to spend hours learning it yourself.

this teacher is soo demanding and difficult! I took the class this summer and failed even though I passes econ in high school with a "B". He bases your grades on only 3 tests with no final!! His lectures don't really relate to the tests. the tests are 10 times more difficult than what he lectures on !

He is such a sarcastic teacher
Worst Micro teacher I've had and Im now and econ major. Not only did he not teach but I heard more about his community issues in the Russian River, than I did anything regarding micro. Not recommended!!!! And WAY too sarcastic...
Trust me, he is not worth your time and most importantly your money - DO NOT TAKE THIS DUDE -EVER!!!!.

He was an okay teacher. I think his class was easier than the other econ teachers at SRJC and I think it is easier to get an A in his class than the other econ teachers. Put simiple he is a "good" teacher. I would recommend him if you like his style.

INSANLY HARD! He lectures about current event non relting to your studies yo'd better read and use the internet activities to pass. I wish i had learned about ratemyprof.com before. Id save myself the time and frustration. I had to end up choosing pass/fail instead of a grade and i'm an A student!
For people that are not strong in Economics I recomend this teacher. You can earn extra points by interacting in class. Don't get me wrong it is not easy but those bonus bucks can help you pass! The online materials are very helpful, and yes you need to read.
SRJC must have the worst economics department in the state. Does not even teach the material. Rants about economic issues and completely ignores what is going to be on the test. You need to be able to teach yourself the material as he is no help.
Unlike the other raters on this forum, I appreciated Ed's tangential nature. The concept of economics is practical, so why not relate the material to student inquiries, current events, or sociology? As long as you are willing to stay on top of the reading, which is relatively moderate, the extracurricular subject matter is helpful and stimulating.
This is the worst teacher i have ever had. He would lecture for 3 1/2 hours straight, while only talking about econ for about 1. The rest of the time he was off on some tangent complaining about the world and talking about himself. If you want to learn anything at all dont take him.
It was difficult but very interesting. Great examples and useful information. Helped develop critical thinking skills.
He was a terrible teacher in my opinion. We all failed a test, and instead of blaiming his own teaching methods, he told us we were waisting people's tax dollars. He constantly goes on tangents, and i learned nearly nothing.
Very entertaining and engaged in the topic. Will go off on tangents, but usually with a valid point. Is clear about what is required, and explains things strait forward. A good teacher. Grading mainly hitched on two in class tests. Some math.
Worst teacher ever, do not take him. He is the worst teacher; he doesn't go over anything that will be on the test, let alone anything that has anything to do with Econ. I repeat -- > do not take him; wait until next semester if Econ won't fit into your schedule...
I dont understand why people are so down on him. Sure he goes off on tangents but he makes class very passable. showing up is worth 20% of your grade. he gives you all the tests except the final before hand (even on the final he gives you half the answer). Sure the material is rough, but he is proably the teacher easiest to pass
This class was a great summer course and he was an easy grader. He told us what would be covered on the exams so it made studying for them super easy. He gave real world examples of what we covered which made the class interesting and kept it from being boring and dry. He definetly knows his stuff and helps you understand economics.
Econ can be hard, but Sorensen is fairly easy and very informative. 20% of your grade is based just on attendance, the rest on exams, and he even posts copies of his old exams to his web site to practice on. Lectures are intense and not watered down, but I liked the fact that he used econ to explain current events. I learned a lot in this class.
I think that Ed is a really knowledgable teacher but I feel that he is too easily distracted for my taste, I wonder if I threw something shiny if that would throw him off. He is very passionate about Econ and uses the text for Exams but its hard to get him to stay on topic. If you can deal w/ a scatterbrain, he's your guy
He is a very informative teacher who relates economics to current issues and events. The people who don't like him are the people who bring in whole pizzas into class and text on their phone expecting to get a good grade just because they are there. You will learn, and he gives answers to test questions- super easy.
Sorensen is awesome! Knows his stuff and relates it to the real world. Will teach you how important economics is to every aspect of your life.
Awesome teacher who knows how to keep you engaged; relates real-life to subject so you understand clearly. Very fair with grading policy and very clear about what to expect. NO reason not to pass this class unless you just expect a freebie. He'll go the extra mile for you and wants you to succeed. Very underrated instructor!
Sorenson is a great teacher. I would highly recommend this class if you want to learn how to actually apply what you are learning. Everything he discusses is relevant to current issues. While he doesn't 'spoon feed' the content, you will walk away from the class with a better understanding of how the words in the book relate to the real world
Great class! Great teacher! Very knowledgable, spends a lot of time talking about current events. You will learn how the economy works.
Mr. Sorensen was easily one of the best professors I've ever had, and by far the most entertaining. The summer class I took with him was 5 hours long twice a week, but all of us were transfixed throughout every minute of it by his quirky and impassioned stories that related economic concepts to real life. This class was definitely "Good Times!"
Sorensen is awesome! I aced all of his midterms and he excused me from the final. No extra busy work, other than showing up for class. Plus, he made the subject interesting and related it to real world events. Highly recommend!
Sorensens class is designed for those who wish to learn and succeed. Everything is straightforward. 20% of grade is for just showing up and for each of the four midterms, a comprehensive pre-test is given out. Study that using the book and you will do fine in the class and learn a lot about econ. Disinterested passive "learners" need not apply.
Ed is a very interesting teacher who's very passionate about the subject. He's very helpful & more than fair. You must read your text. He is great at applying what we are learning to real world current events. There are no notes for the tests, but he does give us copies of old tests to help us study. It's a hard class but definately not boring.
Professor Sorensen is one of the few that actually care about students learning the actual subject. In my class he offered extra credit to students who tutored students falling behind. This shows his ingenuity and genuine concern for students learning. Warning: You will have to do work to pass this class. Concilation: You actually learn something.
Ed is a great teacher! Very smart and good humored guy. He made econ a fun class and he used many life experiences to show 1st hand how important econ is! Take him for sure! do the practice tests and you will Ace all the tests. Plus if you pay attention/participate in class he will definitely give you a good grade.
Online class is a lot of work, 20 quizzes, 5 exams. Math skills essential, and don't miss dealines for tests! Teacher is very helpful and fair; responds quickly to questions, plus you get extra credit for linking to a current news story and showing how it relates to the book. Ask questions. This class improved my knowledge of economiocs.
Ed made me really appreciate economics. He is really interesting best econ teacher at the JC!
Sorensen is easily the most arrogant and rude teacher I've experienced, thus far after 60 units. He is a helpful instructor, if you ask for assistance, but will make personal attacks on your performance publicly, as if empowered to do so. He is very passionate about the subject, but is extremely impersonal. This class is for "econ majors".
Best Econ teacher at SRJC, bar none. Teaches real-life economics and even gives great financial tips that I have taken to heart. Pay attention, take notes, ask questions, and you will succeed. Very fair. Adjusts teaching relative to type of students in class. Goofy guy and may go off track slightly but ends up hitting the point home every time
Instructor is SPECIAL!This instructor is passionate about his subject, refreshingly logical, unafraid to state his opinions, clear, easy to follow, helpful, FUNNY and most of all He teaches because he LOVES what he is doing and it shows! My only complaint would be that he is not teaching MORE classes!
Online class does not involve much in the way of teaching, you basically read the book and take quizzes/exams from it. Questions often confusing on tests. Read ALL supplemental material for help with math (though most doesn't explain things well for beginners.) Needs to put more time into online instruction rather than waiting to be asked.
I disagree with the previous post. Sorensen posted advice frequently to the class message board and always responded promptly. Lots of chances for extra credit if you were willing to work hard and apply your knowledge to real world events.
This class can be painful to sit through at times but Sorensen knows what he's talking about. He can be a little out of line at times with his comments but it keeps the class energized. I thought it would be a much harder class than it was. There are tons of extra credit opportunities. High drop rate because people are getting lazier. VERY doable A
Best Teacher I have ever had in my four years at SRJC! He also teaches at SFU and it shows. Isn't an easy class, must read the text. Allot of extra credit to close the gap. The practice tests are gold mines! His humor keeps the class energized. He actually cares about his students especially if you show interest in the class.
Great teacher!! This was an online class, and the teacher not only suggested that students meet for study groups, he was happy to attend himself! Anyone who came to the study groups could ask him any questions, and he would take as much time as necessary for that student to understand the concept. Take this teacher if you want to learn economics.
I would highly suggest not taking classes with this professor. He rants for half the class about things that won't be on the test, then rushes through the material stating "you can read this in the book." If you want to teach yourself, then maybe he will be a good match. Otherwise, find someone else. Anyone else.
Take if you want to learn about real economics outside of the textbook. Sure the tests come from textbook material but you will learn way beyond that by going to class. He teaches you how to be successful in life. Great professor but his style might not appeal to everyone. I loved it.
Took this course online. There are 4 exams (all together they're worth 40%) The final in accumulative & is also worth 40% of your final grade. The teacher also doesn't grade your work as you turn it in, he procrastinates. After every chapter there is a 5 ? quiz. The good news about this teacher is that he does offer a lot of extra credit.
Make sure to solve and understand the practice exams. Gives extra credit if you can write well. Good teacher; very fair.
He is a very fair teacher. Make sure you study the practice exams they are very helpful. There are extra credit opportunities. The class is interesting and he gives you real world examples. He also gives you good advice on how to save money for the future : )
Worst teacher I've ever had. If you have the opposite view as him on something, prepare yourself to be yelled at. No homework, but there are quizzes every week and tests every so often. There's practice tests, but they won't help you because they're the complete opposite of what's on the actual test. I highly suggest NOT taking him.
Horrible teacher. Offers extra credit, which is nice. But refuses to accept the fact that this is an intro to econ. Every time you make a statement, he never fails to critique EVERY PART of it, to where its pointless to make the effort of doing the assignments. NOT A HELPFUL INSTRUCTOR
Took the course online, made sure to give myself an hour and a half twice a week to do his weekly quiz and reading. Got a B but should have gotten an A just was lazy and didn't do extra credit. He always emails back quickly if you have a problem. Good class.
The teacher does go off on tangents when he lectures, but it still relates to economics. He's always willing to answer questions and encourages them. There's no hw to turn in, but doing them on your own can help you for the tests, as he has an answer key. The exams are tough, and most of your grade. So read the textbook, and do the practice exam.
Sorensen is a tough professor! I He goes off on tangents and does not go over what will be on the test as much as he should. He does have a practice exam online which is helpful. But I struggled a lot in his class and I attended all of his lectures. Most of your grade is based on exams & if you're not a good test taker do not take this class !
Attendance is crucial for passing since most students that only came for tests failed the class. He tells you which areas to study the most for exams, but his lectures aren't very helpful. He talks more about his life than he does lecture. Read the book + do homework, quizzes, extra credit, & practice exams and I can guarantee you'll pass!
He is pretty funny, nice if asked outside class for help, and gives chances for extra credit. But his class lectures are not like the weekly quizzes, or the exams. Does not explain mathematical application well, it's a huge part of the exams. Gives you practice multiple choice exams, only 25% of it is familiar material. Take a different teacher.
I spent hours reading the textbook, reading the powerpoints, doing the homework, watching khan academy videos only to receive D's on the exams. I am a math major in math 1C and still manage to get severely marked down on math questions on the exams. I learned so much from this class, but his grading will NOT demonstrate this.
He makes no effort to actually teach the class, the textbook used is either really bad or he is just testing everyone on the wrong material. Pay attention to these reviews they are not lying. If you are great at math It doesn't matter because the math in this class seems easy but it is never taught and you will most likely learn during the test.
I took Econ 1 and Econ 2 online over the past two summers. I didn't have much trouble in securing an A in both, but beware that textbook use is heavy. He doesn't teach much, aside from a few handouts he made. The tests are pretty straightforward, and almost all the answers are clearly in the text. He can be harsh in grading/feedback. Solid teacher.
I took his Econ2 class this semester online. Hes a very harsh grader and doesnt explain things well. I decided to come into class to see if I would get the material better and im sad to say I did not. His teaching style all around is very difficult. Hes willing to talk after class a bit which is nice but this class was a big nono
Disclaimer: ALL of the SRJC econ teachers are bad. Sorensen is because it's nearly impossible to prep for his tests/quizzes, which is your entire grade. Every week I read the chapter at least twice+did the extra credit. I was only able to get a C. The way questions are worded makes you doubt yourself, & the quizzes are out of 5pts (SO easy to fail)
One of the hardest, yet most knowledgeable professors taken. Very intimidating, but knows his stuff! And wants you to know economics in the real world. A lot of quizzes, offers extra credit, but you MUST work hard to get it. Tests are super hard!!! Offers good feedback. Great teacher. Subject is not my favorite though, so hard!!!
I had to take this class as a pre-rec for my Masters and my god it was ridiculous. For an introductory class it was a lot more work than I was expecting. I would spend hours reading and doing the homework in order to truly understand the material. (You have to do this since he isn't teaching you). DO the extra credit and you MAY get an A.
Took the online class. Requires a lot of reading and there are quizzes on each chapter and a test at the end of every week. Quiz questions can be easy but a lot of the time hard. His communication style is rude and inconsiderate. He does not give much explanation for things except after an exam has passed. Not helpful.
He's not a good teacher at all. Don't take him! There's better econ teachers than this guy.
This class will be difficult if you are not willing to put in work. My advice create a schedule for yourself and seek help if you need it. Yeah there are weekly quizzes but there are no time limits on them, so pull them up at the beginning of the week and work on them. Exams will require you to study, so take notes and watch the videos.
Difficult subject but the professor tries to make the online class the same as an in person class. Exams are only open for 24 hours. Very strict on discussion posts format and how you solve the word problems.
Online classes are challenging without any human interaction. Prof. Sorensen creates an online environment allowing for direct contact with each other. It's a tough class, but his curriculum forces personal accountability and makes it easy to stay on task - just set a schedule for yourself. Overall, his online teaching is more effective than most.
Not easy, but I found the workload very manageable (3 hr/week for an A), you just have to be disciplined. Mr. Sorenson made the expectations very clear, was kind and prompt in his responses to my questions, and offers a bunch of extra credit opportunities. If you aren't interested in econ, don't take this class. If you are, this is a great class.
Quizzes and test will absolutely not help you on the final. Doesn't give study guides. Does not give feedback or give back graded assignments for study material. Save yourself the trouble and find another professor! You're welcome:)
I took ECON2 this summer online. Sorensen offers plenty of extra credit, but getting an A still requires an immense amount of reading and work. If you show him in discussion posts that you're interested and willing to work for a certain grade, he will try his best to help. The class overall is very tough.
DO NOT take if you have a lot of other work, especially as your first online class. I took his online Econ 2 class in high school and I didn't understand the time commitment. I missed a few assignments, which was definitely on me, but he was NOT KIND or understanding when I messaged him. At first I appreciated him, but he didn't help when needed.
The worst professor I have ever had!! He doesn't respond to emails, doesn't teach any of the material on the exam, is a hard grader and doesn't give any partial credit. He also gives rude feedback to students and no matter what you do he will never give you a good grade. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!
How has anyone managed to pass Edwards class? Toughest grader I've ever taken. Passed the exams, final exam, the weekly quizzes, still failed. BEWARE the problem solving assignments and discussion assignments both are worth ten points, but he's picky and horrible, you'll never meet his requirements his expectations are out the roof! Skip trust me.
Absolutely does not care about students. In the beginning of the year, he will force you to purchase a subscription for WSJ that is required for the class (you use it about twice throughout the semester) which is an affiliate link that gives him money per subscription. He cares about his paycheck, to be expected from an econ professor.
I took his class expecting it to be like my other hard classes but ended up being a waste of time I did not receive partial credit only because I forgot to label. Quizzes very confusing and not properly taught lessons. You must read and study outside the classroom to learn proper material. Waste of time will not take a class again.
I took Econ 2 with professor Sorensen in the spring. It was the hardest class I have taken so far in my community college journey so far. For an introductory microeconomics class, he expects way too much and does not have clear instructions for the discussions. My one tip is: write a lot more than is needed, and create your own discussion topic.
He put a politically charged question in the final which is completely unprofessional and shows that he grades on opinion. The professor does not make definitive statements in their weekly notes and even when searching for an answer online or in the textbook I could not find what he wanted me to put. He seemed like a nice guy, bad Professor.
AVOID. he does not care about students. there's no definitive rubric and he never tells you want he wants and then knit picks in grading. discussion posts are politically sided, completely unprofessional and very off topic, do not take.
Class work was relatively straightforward and quiz/test answers were easily found. Problem solving activities and discussions seemed irrelevant to what we had learned and he was a TOUGH grader. Never got more than a 5/10 on either. Everytime I thought I did well I got a bad grade and he would comment with very little instruction on how to do better
does this professor proctor online exams.
Background in basic algebra is a must. Class consists of quizzes, exams, problem sets, and discussion posts. Follow directions CAREFULLY. His communication style can be off-putting; he critiques every detail. Very harsh feedback and tough grader. Offers lots of extra credit opportunities so it's an easy A, but the final is challenging.
Great professor, great class content. Super difficult class for me. Hard to communicate with, but if you do the work and actually demonstrate knowledge from the course objectives published in the course description, you will get a good grade. I could not get the math assignments down which might be the difference between an A and a B.
Discussion boards and problem solving quizzes are impossible to pass. Discussion boards had very little instruction. Was barely able to pass the class as both discussion boards and problem solving quizzes were 10 points. And most of the assignments we had each week were 10 points. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
One of the hardest and worst professors at the srjc. Super tough grader for no reason, and shows no sympathy for even trying. If you don't structure your work how he wants to, he will dock points off. Assignments are super unclear which makes an hour assignment take three hours. You have been warned, only take if your life depends on it. :/
There is a weekly 5 question quiz on the reading (approximately 100 pages). There are discussion topics, homework problems and math problems . TOUGH GRADER!!!! Doesn't allow students to get more than a 60% on the discussion topics. No late work. At all. Assignments due at 8pm, which sucks. Definitely a more conservitave leaning class.
Weekly discussions were very tough! Touch grader and assignments are due at 8pm which is random. You have to get a subscription to wall street journal, a lot of reading for weekly quizzes. Again, he's a very tough grader and the weekly discussions are confusing and difficult.
Sorensen is quite literally the worst teacher I have ever had. He is unclear on what he wants from you and will grade extremely harshly if you do not get it perfectly. He is also careless in his grading and will take off points for things you explicitly said in the discussion post. It seems as if he wants all of his students to fail. Simple as that
The simplest way to put it is sorensOn despite teaching people provides a net negative value to society.
Sorensen thinks its okay to write comments that should be private to the whole class. After completing an assignment he responded in the public discussion with his thoughts. His questions are hard to understand and he does not provide clear grading criteria. I would beware of this teachers online classes and lack of respect for his students.
His grading system is absolutely horrible, almost as if he wants kids to fail his class. He will nit pick every little thing he can to lower your score on every assignment. Absolutely no respect for his students, especially in discussion posts. I would just avoid this class if you can.
Probably the hardest professor I have ever had for no apparent reason. He makes no attempt to help you understand your mistakes, just complains that you got the wrong answer. He also is an extremely hard grader. I understand having a professor that is hard on students for their benefit, but he's just straight up mean with no real reason to be.
Did not teach, just assigned reading material. Quizzes and problem solving assignments had questions that were vague or hard to understand. Instructions can be unclear, or confusing. They even sometimes set me on the wrong track instead of helping. Very harsh grader who expects way too much out of an introductory class. Would not recommend.
Seems like a genuine guy, just isn't a very good teacher. Often loads his lectures with personal political opinions and goes off on long tangents that don't cover class material. Provides unclear grading criteria and still proceeds to nitpick the things he didn't make clear. Also makes the final worth over half your grade which isn't fun.
0/10 took this class online and had a horrible experience. No zooms, no recorded lectures or even posted lecture slides. This was a "read the textbook and good luck on the test" type of class. Also not accessible outside of class besides an "ask a question" link on canvas. I had to drop the class with a W, he doesn't teach at all. AVOID at all cost
