Really nice teacher. But ALOT of reading and ALOT of work. 4 quizes, book review, mid-term and Final. Very vague key term list. pretty much pointless.. If you want to take an easy class, don't take this guy.
Very nice teacher!! You do have to work in this class but he is a VERY fair grader and very flexible and considerate! He is also very clear on his lectures.
his essay style quizzes, couples with a book report and intensive final make for a busy semester. he is, however a very nice young man with an ivy league background (Columbia University, amongst others). Very timely, respectful, courteous, and above all else fair. You'llhaveto work, he'll get you by
He's a really nice guy, always willing to talk with any of his students.
one of kindest teachers around.
most boring teacher in the world. you can drink 10 cups of coffe before his class and still fall asleep.
He is totally aware of his subject matter and interested in it enough to be entertaining. His grading seemd fair. He was helpful and nice. I will take more classed with him for sure.
You won't look forward in going to his class. Super nice, but super boring. However, you don't have to listen to do well. He gives you basically the information you need for the tests/ quizzes so if you study, youll do fine. He is really technical, but its not hard at all to get an A. Strict on attendence, but lets you have 5 absences.
I really enjoy the subject matter, so I like the class no matter what. I like Wilkinson for his clarity and attention to detail, and as mentioned in other comments, you basically have to study the quiz material and you'll do fine -- I really wish he was more creative, history can be such a cool subject, but he has a tendency to make it boring.
Gives you "ids" for quiz, if you study them very well you will do well. He grades very tough on tests. It's a lecture class, don't get excited.
quizes: 2 weeks in advance he'll give u like 16 topics and on the quiz there will only be like 8 Midterm: essay on 1 out of 4 possible questions he'll give u in advance. Bookreview: comaring and contrasting 2 books, prob the hardest worth 30%.Final: same as midterm...going 2 class is prob the hardest cuz its sooooo boring and pointless.
Wilkinson is a good guy.I got a B,I had to work somewhat hard.No offense but his lectures are boring. He meets with his students during office hours for sure.He is really knowledgeable. If you study the IDs(quiztopics) you will do well on his tests also.
This guy is a clown, poor in class time management, unclear grading criteria, weak lecture skills. If you want to work your butt off and only hope for a mediocre grade, this guy's for you.
this is just a dork. I took the summer session and he went through everything fast, but he won't during the reg year. He's helpful and gives you the ID's and essay questions before the test. He wants you to do well. he grades kind of hard.
Very knowledgable. Tough grader on tests but not impossible to get an A. Extremely helpful. Will meet you for office hours and explain material. Know your id's and essay questions (which are given) and you'll do well.
Excellent Professor! He really knows the material and doesn't lecture from reading but by memory. He explains things and elaborates on how things tie in. MEMORIZE ID's and attend the lectures, and you will get atleast a B. He gives you the questions to the exams ahead of time so no excuse to fail! Smart guy, caring, helpful, recommended!
He is very nice, and give three test, and one paper. I took him in a 8 week class, i think pretty easy. Study the ids and esssays that he gives you ahead of time. His lectures are boring though.
he is a smart and caring teacher. He wants everyone to do well. he met you in his office hours and explain the material and answer all your questions. highly recommended
Great teacher. Very helpful. Very understanding and will try his hardest to work around your personal problems. Very willing to meet with you outside of class during his office hours.
Great teacher. Extremely helpful. He actually cares about his students and how they do. Lives and breathes history. He knows it all. Only 3 tests. Tells you what to study for each test. He's more than willing to meet with you if needed.
Kindly enough man, however, very dull. I was unfortunate enough to get him at a busy time, I literally received NONE of my work back. I took the class in Fall 2007, it is January 5th and I have no idea of my grade. Forces you to meet him outside class for grades. Very frustrating... I hope he is more organized in other semesters
Really nice! Wilkinson is really passionate about teaching and is really straight forward. His class can be sort of boring...he just talks the whole time, but study the ID's and try to plan out your essays and he will give you a good grade. Pretty easy class and you will learn quite a bit...RECOMMENDED!!!
His lectures are as interesting as reading the book is. He's really nice and understanding (so always make an appointment to see him). Study the study guide and read the book you'll need it. Overall he's a great teacher and he's a fair grader.
ya boi can talk. You can listen to his lectures in class, take light notes, and the weekend before an exam, take your study guide home and just fill it in using info off the internet. His exams only require brief summaries of topics on the study guide, so his lectures are helpful, but not necessary.
Really nice and kind guy.class can be as monotonous and boring if you really have no patience on listening for the whole 1hr and 20 mins.gives the study guide ahead of time. ID's and essay.im probably one of the person who always finish last during exams because i try as much to answer the ID's and essay as detailed coz it will earn you an A or B.
I took the Scholars section of this course. His lectures are pretty boring, but you can tell that he really loves the subject. Always willing to meet outside of class. Gives you test ID's and essays ahead of time, and is willing to meet with you to go over your notes. A really caring professor. Just a little boring.
Wilkinson is very smart, knows his subject and is one of the NICEST professors around. Bends over backwards to meet students outside of class. Class is rather boring but I would rather have a prof like him that I actually am learning from than a prof who barely knows what their talking about and seems to dislike teaching (we've all had those).
Really nice guy, knows his stuff. Takes a long time to grade because tests are pretty long, but isn't a harsh grader. Cares about his students and encourages them to meet him during his office hours. Tests aren't on surprise material...he gives you any possible question he may test you on in advance. I'd take another class!
Very nice guy, but very boring. A predominantly lecture class-tests are a gangrape if you study the night before. Tests consist of 1 essay (4 page minimum) and 10 identifications (1/2 page aprrox). He gives you the study guide in advance with the 3 possible essay prompts and 15 possible identifications. He chooses 1 essay; 10 Identifications.
The nicest guy in the world, but also the boringest teacher in the world. He talks up until the last minute and sometimes holds you 5 minutes over.He talks in a very dull and boring monotone voice. But he's pretty easy,no research paper, you do a bookr review, and three test.He never covers all of the material so he eliminates essay questions and IDs.
He's so smart. He knows everything there is to know about history. He's kind of a nervous personn though. Very helpful. His test are easy if you attend class.
Ted is awesome. His class is really hard and you have to study for it. Read the text book it will help you with the ids and essays. I got an A but you definitely need to study.
A really nice guy who wants you to do well and will meet with you as many times as you like. You'll have to do a lot of reading and you definitely have to work to get an A but you'll learn a ton of stuff..
His lectures are a little boring, but his tests are what makes him so good. He tests in such a way that you really learn the material while studying. He's the nicest guy in the world and will bend over backwards to help you. I loved him, I'm taking him again next semester.
BEST HISTORY TEACHER EVER!!! He is always trying his hardest to help and history is such a passion to him. I highly recommend Edward! You will not be disappointed.
his very interesting and helpful and just good all around. One of the best profesors i've had.
This guy is amazing. He has complete grasp off the subject material. I don't know how he keeps the his intensity during his lecture, wow! I feel lucky to have had such a smart and professional instructor. Thanks smc...
Nice person, very helpful. Focused on the details of hist not the big picture. Lectures can be boring, but he says what essays & quotes are on the tests. No mult choice, just identifying/saying significance of quotes. One 2 pg book report. Never gives back tests! Always ends up raising e/one's grades. never know how did on tests.
I took his class for winter and while he's really nice and a good teacher, he's the slowest grader ever. Class is over and he still hasn't finished grading stuff!
Takes forever to grade exams as stated before (during winter at least), but for the ppl who didn't receive their exams back, he bumps ur next exam up a grade. Because I found out I got an A in the class, I doesn't bother me anymore. Exams r long but gives everything that's going to be on the exam online so u can study the night and morning before.
he is sooo cute. and helpful. im talking him for the scholars version of this course (spring) and he is realllly sweeet. he cares a lot about his students and is always eager to help. class is kinda long and can be boring (cuz its history) but overall hes really nice and u can tell he tries his best. tests are not hard if u study! i love him!
three ridiculously hard exams which consist of 10 IDs and an essay, each. took the scholars course and also had to do a 15 page research paper in the end. you realllllllllllllllllllllllllly need to study a LOT to get a B- on them. tough grader and takes forever. do not recommend, especially for scholars students or history major students
I'm currently taking history 11&12 at the same time its super hard you have to study A LOT A LOT A LOT but at least hes a nice guy and willing to meet with you out of class and always smiles lectures are kind of boring
kind of harsh grader but always ends up raising your grade (since he never returns anything) although i had a hard time during the course since i had him for history 11 and 12 at the same time now that i realize i got an A in both classes it was all worth it he's the nicest guy on the planet &will meet with you out of class
Perfect teacher, if you write all essays yo can get min. B+ or A-
Prof. Wilkinson is a very nice teacher. However, his class is super boring. It's hard to sit & listen to a professor lecture non-stop for over an hour.I think he should take another approach. I took the scholars course. He requires a 15 page paper at the end of the semester. Easy-no. Excessive-yes. I don't recommend his scholars class at all.
FAIR!FAIR!FAIR! Great. Not easy or hard.
Such a nice man who loves his subject. Wants students to be thrilled...too bad I died slowly each class. So boring with lectures -_-... He gives the test so just find the ID's and essay and just study that. Takes roll so be there it can help your grade. Easy class just bring something fun to do while he lectures :)
He is incredibly nice and you can definitely tell he is excited about lecturing... but listening to anybody speak the entire class period NONSTOP can make you want to gouge your eyes out. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you need it. His Scholars class requires a 15 page paper- start writing it as soon as possible!
(scholars)He is an incredibly passionate teacher to the point that it's inspiring how enthusiastic he is.Don't procrast on the IDs & start the 15pg paper ASAP.He'll guide you throughout the whole process if needed-he ALWAYS offers his help. His lectures contain the bullet points to the IDs(can b boring). If u read a magazine-he'll rightflycall u out.
OMG. this class is so boring you wish you could die but not be in it. he lectures non-stop for 2 hours and sometimes more. 3 exams based on IDs and essay questions. kind of a harsh grader but he raises your grade at the end. willing to meet with you and help you and he is very nice. the scholars has a 15 page research that is very annoying.
He's an excellent professor. Very passionate about the subject. He does lecture the entire class time. Tests are on ID's and an essay question. Studying and taking notes on everything he says is very helpful. I did better than I thought- I earned an A. He's leniant about grading. Willing to help you during office hours. Great professor.
Took him 4 scholars, prepare to work very hard [good training for uni]. He is a really nice guy and will answer all of ur questions thoroughly if you meet him outside class. half a large BB page for each quotation ID [10 total] 4 pages for each essay test [part B]. He gives you IDs and possible essay questions online. Put 110% in and got an A
The lectures are EXTREMELY boring. Took the class at 8am, fell asleep almost every class. He's extremely sweet. Really wants his students to pass. He's extremely helpful. I didn't read much of the textbook but having it comes in handy when studying for the essay portion of quizzes.
Took him over the summer-Very smart man who really understands history. The class consists of 3 tests and 1 book review. He gives you 3 essays ?s and 10 short quotes. He asks you 1 essay and 6 quotes. You need to put in time, if you do youll get an A. It was a lot of grading, and bumped all the tests up by a letter grade for being late. Very chill
I can see how a lecture for every class can be boring. However, Wilkinson is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his subject, which makes me really appreciate him and enjoy his class. He really is a nice and caring guy. Cute too!! If you're complaining, you're probably lazy and unmotivated anyway. ;)
THE BEST HIST TEACHER! Want to go to a UC? Do you want to know History? He knows everything & is willing to share it with you. I'm a UC student now & I use everything he taught me. If you want to learn something...Take him! It's some work, but you'll apply it everything he teaches you in life. BTW-He's hot because he is super smart, & that's sexy!
He is simply GREAT. Though, don't expect him to give you every little detail, that's something you gotta read on your own, which is really easy, as he's got everything posted on the school's e-companion. Be prepared to learn very interesting facts, and ENJOY HIS COLORFUL LECTURES.
Wilkinson is extremely knowledgable in his field. He is also very helpful. The class is very straight forward and should be an A for most people. If you have any interest in history this class will be very enjoyable and stress free.
He is a great teacher and the class is perfectly laid out so you know what you will be doing everyday and what you miss. the lectures are NOT as boring as other teachers because he actually answers questions and tries to make it interesting which some people dont. Personally i was really relieved to have a teacher as easy going and understanding
He is an awesome history professor. The lectures are more interesting than I ever thought before. He kindly answers everyone's questions. Even if you do poorly on the first exam you can get A as long as you get good scores at the last one and book review. He also encourages students to communicate so that they get better. Highly Recommended!
I personally think that this was /the/ most boring class ever. Yes, Wilkinson is passionate about History and he answers all questions, but I fell asleep during each class because it was so boring!! If you do not learn well just from listening to a straight lecture+notes, I would highly recommend not taking his class.
Prof. Wilkinson is the most kind human being I've ever met. He is so sweet and very passionate about his work. The excitement he has in every lecture is kind of contagious, since I've always hated history but loved his class. He answers all your questions, he is very clear, helpful and handsome :) I am going to miss this class. TAKE HIM!
Great Professor! Passionate and knowledgeable about the subject-matter. Exams are all memorization and are pre-posted on e-companion! YOU MUST STUDY FOR IT! 3exams + 1 Book Review Report (5-6 Pages). Highly recommend Professor Wilkinson for anyone who is a history major or who just wants to learn history!
Took him summer 2012, he's a really excellent professor who has passion for history and shows that during his teachings. He's very thorough in his teachings and in what he expects. This class takes some time outta your day but it's a really great. He's more then willing to meeting with students if they need help! Take him!
I just took him for the 2012 summer course. I will say that its a bit bland, and not many visuals aid for his teaching. But, his class is mostly graded on 2exams and 1paper. In the exams there are ID quotes that you need to identify who said them and when and explain the meaning. Over all he makes it simple.
4 quizzes, 2 exams, and 1 book review make up this course. It's not hard, but how well you do depends on how much info you memorized during his lecture. Hardly used the book because I took a lot of notes. He's a really nice guy and I chose his course over others because his ratings were higher. Got an A this summer.
First of all, I think he is absolutely adorable. Attending class was only necessary to receive credit for being present. All the study information is online and easily accessible. Syllabus and schedule are very clear and he sticks by them. He's not very engaging but nonetheless really enjoyed this class.
This is one of those Professors who deserves a set of applause. He is absolutely amazing in the way he lectures and runs the class. You will learn so much from him! I took him during Winter, and it had 2 exams = about 15 pages to memorize for each = peace of cake.1 Book review. I wouldn't bother getting the textbook. Audiotape his lectures instead.
One of the best professors in SMC. He gives more but demands less so students are not overloaded. I love his teaching style. If you are a history major you can study a lot if you are not then you will basically start to love history. 2 tests and 1 book review and your A is ready. Even though its seems easy you have to study, take notes, and read.
Which history class isn't boring? Took him during Spring13, and he's absolutely adorable. Very knowledgeable about the course material and he will gladly answer any of your questions in class. Overall, good professor. Exams aren't hard if you study for them and attendance is pretty much mandatory. Tips for the course;start early on the book review.
He was extremely helpful and urged students to come to his office hours. His class is not hard to do well in as long as you put in effort and time. You need to do a lot of memorization. The quizes get easier and the exams are not hard. He can be kinda of boring at times, but just drink some coffee and u will be fine ha. It was a good class.
He is such a kind professor very good lectures, you learn a lot. You have ID's to remember and then exam is ID'S plus 3 possible exam questions. plus a book report. This class was not easy but not hard, keep up with the ID'S and do you're book report as soon as you can. I def. recommend this class if you are a history major.
Took him for History 11 and 12 over winter and got an A in both. He is incredibly knowledgable on the subject and cares about his students. Never got much back but bumped our Exam 2 grades a full letter as a result. Two exams and a book review. Very fair grader and the work is manageable. Definitely recommend for history majors such as myself.
I'm not a huge fan of early american history but he was such a great lecture that i learned to love it. He makes history like one very fluid narrative which makes it easy to understand and remember. He is very knowledgable and can go further in depth on any topic. He is my all time favorite professor. Take him!
He is the caviar of SMC. I love his class and his tests and quizzes are simple, only of coarse if you study. Just take him! (if you can). He is also very passionate about what he teaches.
He teaches the history course like an english course. You are required to do a book review and read a historical novel. HE lectures like he is telling a story which is very confusing and makes the material seem like fiction. In fact, I remember fat checking him a few times and he was wrong on some circumstances of an event. Very boring class.
His lectures are extremely boring! Maybe its just the subject, but I wasn't interested whatsoever. However, everything is pretty clear on what you have to do. THere's a quiz every week, 2 exams, and a book review. He's not a hard grader which helps. Wilkinson is a nice guy.
Professor Wilkinson is a great professor. His History of California course was very fascinating. Lot's of reading and writing but it's well worth the effort, you come away from the class with a better set of analytical skills and a greater appreciation for history.
Simply the best teacher I have had. I wish he taught all of my classes. The quizzes are just on the documents he posts, simple. The midterm and final are simple and to the point, gave us three prompts ends up picking one. He is clear on what he says and yes his lectures can be long, but he says it like a story so it makes it interesting. TAKE HIM!
He seems shy and nervous on the first day of lecture but as the semesters keeps going on he's more enthusiastic with the lectures, though the material will always be boring. His quizzes on the quotes are easy, the book report is straight forward and the midterm and final essays are easy as long as you payed attention.
He does a great job of making lectures interesting. It's history, so it'll never be super exciting, but you can tell he's passionate about the material and it shows. There are a lot of quizzes, but they're super easy. The thing that bugged me most about his class is that he tends to talk 5-10 minutes after the class was supposed to end.
Professor Wilkinson was honestly my favorite history teacher I have ever had, and I usually am not a fan of history. You could tell he was passionate about what he taught, which was really cool and made his lectures more interesting. His syllabus is straight forward and the class is an Easy A as long as you do a little bit of studying. TAKE HIM!!!!
History wasn't my strongest interest but Prof. Wilkinson managed to tell history like a story! He knows history can be a boring subject but makes it interesting. He seems shy at first but willing to help his students. Flexible office hours and great lectures! I would definitely take him again. You won't regret it :)
Definitely take him! No matter how bad the syllabus may seem and by bad i mean work and reading, he is super chill and gives great feed back! Make sure to ask questions and participate! Read the textbook at all costs and you'll pass!
Professor Wilkinson is a good teacher. He's passionate about history and there really isn't any homework besides to read the textbook and study for quizzes. There is a book review to complete by the end of the semester and the final is the same format as the quizzes. It's an easy A as long as you study!
Nice teacher & approachable! Drops lowest test grade. I got an A on both midterms & A's & B's on quizzes. I think attendance factors in the grade, because I got a B which is frustrating. Very boring lectures, but if you can tune in, the material's good! Worked with me on times to retake a quiz I missed. Quizzes all based on quotes from books.
This class is really easy. It's honestly based off memorization. If your the type of student who shows up class everyday and studies you'll be fine. There a midterm and final, but he gives you the prompt beforehand.
He's lectures are super boring and dull, he just talks off his own notes with no emotion. But the class is easy. When he is talking, pay attention to what he says about the documents because you are gonna be quizzed on it. Just show some effort and its impossible to not get an A!
He was a very caring teacher. He always was very understanding when I was absent and always told me what I missed. His lectures are snooze fests though. Also, it's hard to follow. He was very passionate about the subject though, you can tell since he was always smiling.
Professor Wilkinson is nice and understanding. He encourages students to ask questions and to see him in office hours. He is super lecture heavy and has the notes online. The textbook isn't necessary unless you like to read about history. Theres an easy quiz every week and only two tests. Only homework is a book review due the end of the semester.
Though Prof. Wilkinson was a very educated individual, I personally did not like his teaching style. He is very lecture heavy and I don't do too well in those aspects. Besides that, he was a great, encouraging teacher who clearly cares about all his students. He's available all the time to help you out of class. If you love history, I recommend him
Really enjoyed his class. VERY lecture heavy but history should be like that. Great guy and is VERY flexible with due dates. Theres a book review but get over it you're in college. Not sure if he takes note of kids leaving so attendance may not be mandatory but he discusses whats on the next quiz at the end of each class so you should go to class.
Extreamly knowledgeable in his field with degree's from U.C. Berkeley, San Francisco State, and Columbia to back em up. Will help you achieve the grade you want if you do your part. Accessible outside of class, and will help you correct papers. He is very lecture heavy, and doesn't personally engage the class. Do not be afraid to interrupt. His20
Professor Wilkinson is very passionate about his subject. His teaching technique is great , He makes it clear for you what questions to study for quizzes and exams, and in a studying process you end up learning a lot. (Not like most professors , who try to "stuff" all the information in your head but you forget it the next day )
Professor Wilkinson was great. I took his class and I enjoyed it a lot. He cares about his students so if you talk to him and show up to class he is willing to help you out. See him during office hours and he will answer any questions. Great Professor
He does not use canvas for submitting assignments, but by emails. The due dates are confused. He send all his announcements through emails. He grades the home work extremely slow. It is now in week 16 and he only posted the grades for the first three weekly quiz. Not recommended
Could not have been more unreachable. Wasn't even sure I was enrolled in this class till I had to contact the department head to get an email back, and it was only ever that one. Never received grades for my work, not even mid-term or final papers. Found out grade from the transcript posting. Totally absent. Don't take this class online.
ugh.. he doesn't even give you ANY grades, you could be failing and not know. never responds to grade emails or anything. quiz every week. book review abt 6 pages long. 2 exams like 5-6 pages essay. I got an a but I had a heart attack till the last day of the sem. never watched a lecture of his just crash course as need be. idk dont take
okay sooooo... this class is a guaranteed A if you do all the work and the work is easy. the thing is he won't give you grades until the end of the semester and he doesn't answer emails but if you did the work and turned it in you WILL get an A. even if its late. so if you want an easy history class take this but don't expect to have contact w him
This Professor was a very straightforward one at that. The work was assigned through email and turned in through email as well. Canvas was not used at all. Easy A take this class if you want to learn about California through readings. Dont expect to have ANY contact or grades before the semester ends.
The bad: - You won't see grades on your assignments - Assignments are sent/submitted via email making due dates a bit difficult to remember Good: - Not difficult work, at all! Even the full essays did not take long to complete! - Learned a lot - Removes your two lowest scores for the weekly assignments!
This class is an easy A if you do all the work. He won't grade your work up until finals. He is straightforward with the expectations and gives extra time if you ask.
