I've also had him for Anthro343, and he is a really great teacher. He teaches Anthropology through the book, discussions, and movies. It's a great class. He really cares whether or not you understand the material.
I love this class. He is the nicest guy and his lectures are always interesting. He wants everyone to do well and he is super easy!!! I would recommdend him to anyone!!!
This class was easy, and he is a good teacher. A little dry at times, but good. All you have to do is a few papers and answer a daily question.
Easiest class of my life. All you have to do is answer this easy quiz, 2/3 of the time take home so impossible to get it wrong, write a couple 2 page papers graded easy, A+ grade. No final, never took notes in class, lots of movies. Worth 3 credit hours, i would advise taking it for a gpa boost!
Inconsistent. Sometimes his questions are easy, other times impossible. His tests can be awfully hard. Wastes a lot of time showing movies, so if you like to waste time, he's great. Goes on tangents in the middle of giving notes, so you have no idea what to write. makes notetaking hard.
So last semester, this teacher was said to be remarkably easy and that there were no tests or anything. This semester he DID have tests and they were vague and random. He also isn't very punctual with when he changes the schedule, which is a pain becuase he assigns some VERY long readings.
Great class! This year we had tests because the class was so huge he couldnt grade all the esays. Tests can be easy, just have to ask him for help during it. Brother Andrus is the nicest guy ever, you can help but love him with that little smile he always has on his face!!!
You just watch movies and he teaches the same thing everyday. The subject matter is interesting, but it is hard to know what he wants as answers on the quizes and papers.
Also had him for Anthro of China, and Anthro of India. Easy (if you listen), and honestly wants you to have a brain of your own. He uses movies to illustrate points and break things up- I found it a very useful strategy. I will never watch another movie without analyzing the cultural aspects.
I had mixed feelings about class. I learned some interesting things. I liked Andrus. Two complaints. First, his tests were inconsistent and sometimes vague. I would studying the same and ace one test but not as well on the next. Second, required five books, primarily used one or two of them.
I thought the class was pretty interesting. However, he requires a bunch of reading and the reading is what the daily quizzes are on. The tests weren't that bad as long as you go to the reviews and take good notes.
Great teacher, always kept class somewhat interesting. Biggest complaint is that the tests had vague/difficult free response questions, but the multiple choice was always easy. I'd recomend him
We watched a lot of movies. Your grade is based on 4 papers and a group presentation. Interesting class and not too hard.
He is very intelligent but his lectures are long and sometimes tediously boring. When he feels the class getting bored, though, he puts on movies to illustrate points which help a lot. The tests are vague, but he gets them from the author of the main textbook, so I guess it's not his fault. He offers extra credit to those who come to class. Easy.
Dr. Andrus was so easy. You knew basically exactly what would be on tests after a while. As long as you went to class, you would get all the info you need for tests. Also, there is no big term paper which is nice.
Professor Andrus is the man!
This class was so awesome. The tests were easy, there is no final, extra credit opportunities, you get points for going to class. Awesome Awesome Awesome. Plus this class counts for 2 GE requirements, Social Science and Global and Cultural Awareness
professor andrus has you take notes on the things you need to know and the things he will test you on. no tricks, no trying to figure out what he wants you to know. he's straight forward and, i think interesting.
This is a fairly easy class. His lectures are extremely repetitive, but attendance is mandatory so you just have to sit through it. The lectures are straight from the book, and what he teaches is what you are tested on. He offers a ton of extra credit at the end of the semester. You watch a lot of foreign movies, and there is no final.
Good easy class!
This was a wonderful class. The lectures were extremely easy to follow and the professor was very nice. I took the class at the Salt Lake City extension, and it was a breeze. The only homework requirements were reading and two papers. It is an easy A, but I learned a lot too.
Great teacher- I highly recommend
Easiest class I have ever taken, it's sad but you don't have to listen. Quizzes worth a few points at the begining of each class from readings, but they are easy. He lectures for an hour, you watch a movie for the rest of class. You can get everything from the lectures in the books before the test in a lot less time. One test, a few easy papers.
Pretty easy class. 10 point font, single space 3 page essays aren't so fun, but it's pretty easy to make up stuff like you know what you're talking about. The movies are pretty fun, but sometimes it's hard to stay awake during the hour long lecture.
Great Professor learned a lot from him about moral and ritual institutions as well as food.
Easy-going atmosphere, but I still learned a lot.
Very insecure professor; treats students like children; felt more like he thought he was babysitting rather than teaching students who can watch out for themselves.
He was okay, but nothing special. Tended to be a little condescending to students who missed questions on his exams. Still, no real complaints. He seemed like he'd be better in a smaller, upper-level class than in the intro. one I took.
AWESOME. I love this man! The class is straight forward, easy going, and in a way laid back atmosphere. I learned a lot and can't wait for his next class! Whoever downplays this guy needs a good backhanding cause Ed is the man
He is a great teacher and he clips his toe nails in class.
Andrus is sweet. He tells you exactly what to expect on the test. If you don't get an A in this class, reconsider attending BYU. It's one of my top 5 easiest classes ever. Very low workload, and he makes the material interesting but brining in gospel insight into the intro Anthro class. Take this class from him.
LOved Professor Andrus. He tells you exactly what's going to be on the tests. I did not use my book hardly at all because after reading the first chapter and taking notes I realized we took the exact same notes in class. Tests are all memorization.Just gotta study and he gave us ec for perfect attendance. I would take another class from him.
Professor Andrus was a wonderful professor. He was straight forward and fair. He told you exactly what was going to be on the test and was more than fair on grading my essay. The topics were interesting. Professor Andrus went over what is in the book but keep up on the reading (it's interesting anyway). Two enthusiastic thumbs up. :)
Andrus is truly a nice man but his way of teaching is a joke. The subject is boring and his way of teaching doesn't help at all. Its a pretty easy class but if you aren't a fan of sitting through boring subject don't take his class. I couldn't tell you how many times people look up to the clock begging for class to be over.
Okay, simply put Andrus is way easy. All you need to do is attend his class, participate in class, do some of the reading. Overall, he will give you an A as long as you do your part. Taking his class is a guaranteed A
If you're taking this for a GE, Dr. Andrus is the way to go. Do the readings and go to every lecture for an easy A. The tests got tricky sometimes, but you were more than prepared for them and he offers extra credit. He gives you a review sheet which exactly resembles the test. I would recommend him to anyone.
Love this guy. Do what he asks (which isn't much) and you will get an A. Watch movies, eat food, barely any assignments.
Nice guy. Actual international anthropologist. Group tests.
Super boring. Changed attendance policy after the add/drop deadline- began docking you points for missing class. (4 points every absence- 350 points in the class). Confusing. Not helpful. Worst teacher I've had. Boring. Didn't learn anything pragmatic. Old teaching style...
GREAT TEACHER! Caring, Lots of information, easy class. He uses movies to teach about Chinese Culture, understanding teacher, and super fun class. He expects everyone to get an A. Learn lots and have fun while doing it! What a concept! He actually teaches in a way thats interesting for our generation! I definitely recommend! I learned a lot!
Great teacher. Take the class from him. You take exams in groups so make sure you get a good-studying group. He practically gives you the notes and you just need to come to class and listen. Great class to get an A in...class can seem to drone on a bit, but it's worth it. I definitely recommend Andrus. Really willing to help, even on exams.
I found the material interesting but he is undoubtedly extremely boring. You don't have to come to class to learn, but he will guilt trip you into it. If you miss two classes, he will ask your test group if they would like to kick you out and he's not discreet about it either! He will ask in front of the entire class. So make sure you come
Mr Andrus is an ok professor. If you are looking for a class that you can have a solid discussion and engaging learning environment, this class is NOT for you. He is very knowledgeable and somewhat helpful, but has an ancient teaching style. Class is very boring, but is required. If you like to memorize instead of discuss, this class IS for you.
Horribly boring.
Without the semblance of pretension, he says things how they are. Gets distracted by where he's going with the lecture, on occasion, but always comes full circle to ensure things make sense. Humble teacher. Great man.
Bro. Andrus is wonderful! He knows the subject and I actually became very interested in anthropology. Because of his class, I am considering majoring or minoring in anthropology.
Old school. Boring. take it from someone else.
Brother Andrus is a great guy but not a great teacher. He rambles a lot and gets off on random tangents about China. I didn't like how he does test, because you take them in a group that you set up yourself and then study and take it together. So if one group member didn't study you had to pull their weight. Movies you watch were pointless.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Andrus was a great professor and really cared about our learning. Group tests, quizzes every class, lots of extra credit opportunities. Professor Andrus is a really great guy and I learned a lot from him in this class!
Love the class, love the subject, love the professor. Just do the reading. That's it.
Run. Never have I had a teacher so rude, unhelpful, and unorganized. He cannot lecture properly and is so unclear with his message. He needs to retire because his methods expired decades ago. Seriously.. avoid at all costs.
Dr. Andrus drags lectures on for what seems like an eternity. Grading is really fair and if you study his study guides you should easily get an A. Just be prepared to waste a lot of time in class because it is not an effective use of time, but he will dock your grade if you don't attend. He gives an in-class quiz on the reading for each day.
He's is a really smart man and knows exactly what he's talking about, but his lectures are really long and he isn't very specific on what he wants you to know for his class and its really frustrating trying to prepare for his tests.
He is literally the best teacher that I have had at BYU, the tests are reasonable. There are weekly quizzes but read the book and you will do fine. He is so understanding and willing to help you at essentially every turn. He will often offer extra credit.
Not my favorite class that I have taken at BYU. Really not that clear on what we're going to be tested on. He passes out papers on what he plans to lecture on though so there is a little help there. But he goes off on a lot of tangents and it gets confusing because you don't know if its something we need to know or something he wanted to share.
Great class, not an easy A though. Makes you definitely work for it.
Not my favorite class. Professor Andrus isn't super clear when he teaches, but there are no tests so his lectures aren't super helpful. One 20 page essay for the final that is horrible. Readings are also a little heavy but we only met once a week. An average class for easiness but it is hard to stay focused during class. Not sure if I would take.
Honestly, this class just made me a little uncomfortable. Speaks very casually about very sacred subjects. He goes off on a ton of tangents, and his lectures never ave much to do with what you need to know. 10 page single space final paper, quiz every class period on heavy reading. Took this as an elective, NOT WORTH IT.
He is a really awesome professor and really wants to help you receive a good grade. He will help and explain anything to you. Lectures are long but in detail. The tests contain any material discussed in class. SUPER NICE!!! I would love to take this class again!
There is a quiz each week so you MUST do the reading to do well. The quizzes are the hardest 6 points I have ever earned but very doable if you read. This is one of my most favorite classes that I have taken so far. It is very interesting and teaches a lot about life, society and cultures. I really look forward to it each class time.
I enjoyed my time in this class and learned a lot. The class can be lecture heavy at times but if you pay attention to what is being taught than it's interesting. He is a very nice guy and is willing to help you of you need it.
Andrus really does make you work for your grade by making you accountable for readings and synthesizing what you read for class. Sometimes it's hard to water down how much reading it is, but if you pay attention, your eyes will be opened. And it sounds cliche, but it can really be a life-changing class if you let it. He's a quirky, funny old man.
Great teacher. Really cared about us learning. If you put in the work, you will get a good great. Not super hard. But not super easy. He is a great guy and funny.
I took Anthropology of Mormonism from Master Andrus. I'm an anth major, but at least half our class wasn't. Even so, everyone seemed to enjoy the anthropological approach to studying the practices that most of us had lived all our lives. The class definitely makes the strange familiar and the familiar strange.
Loved being able to see a different perspective on Mormonism from his Anthropology of Mormonism class! I loved taking it and would take it again.
He is great about extra credit to help boost your grade. He is terrible at emailing you back, so if you need anything talk to him in person. If you want to do better on a test make sure to stay during the whole test time, he sometimes will help you out if you stay behind. Take the in class quizzes seriously - They are usually about definitions.
Professor Andrus is amazing. He helps you understand the material well and gives great lectures. Participate and show up, it's worth it. You learn a lot from the readings and presentations. The big paper at the end is a bit tough but worth it. I've taken two classes from him now because he is awesome!
I really enjoyed him as a professor. He was very nice and would give us a lot of the answers on his tests.
I have taken Anthropology of Mormonism and Chinese culture and society. I loved both classes. They are enjoyable which makes it easy to get a good grade.
Professor Andrus is good at teaching the basics of the Chinese culture. The readings were challenging for me, but he always goes over them in class. Also, the quizzes are not graded hard, so you'll be okay if you struggle with readings. He forgets to mention assignments, but if you remind him he'll discuss them.
He's a great guy with good perspectives. I had him for Anthropology of Mormonism which was a good class if you already have had a class or two about anthropology. Professor Andrus is slightly deaf so wait until he sees you to speak. He is willing to work with you.
This is a good class. He is fair in his grading and wants kids to do well.
This professor is great. You get to watch and analyze some interesting films. Also, he has an incredible TA, who is really easy on the eyes.
Professor Andrew is really nice and he gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. As long as you go to class and do the readings you should be fine.
The class is really easy and the professor is super helpful. He wants you to get a good grade in his class.
Not a terribly difficult class. Mainly lecture. He quizzes on random parts of readings, and tests are all from lecture.
We had quizzes each lecture from assigned reading, other than that, not much work.
This class was amazing. I learned a lot about how to analyze Chinese culture and films through a anthropological way. There was a 10 page single spaced paper that almost killed me, but I survived. He is sweet and caring. He gives good feedback and is willing to work with you if you need help!
Difficult to please if you don't match his style. He seems to grade on very specific criteria he wants met, yet most if any of that criteria is outlined anywhere, so you have to do your best, and hope it's what he likes.
Professor Andrus is great. He has a lot of knowledge in what he teaches. I took his Anthropology of Mormonism class, and really enjoyed it. There is a lot of reading, with quizzes the next class. If you pay attention, you are just fine. He loves China as well, and that influences his teaching. I learned a lot and really enjoyed this class.
He's great and really wants you to succeed
He really wants you to do well and he works with you. His lectures can be long, but the class is only once a week for several hours. Half of the time you watch a film.
I loved this class and the professor. She's so nice and he's very knowledgeable on the subject. He's a real gem!
This professor's teaching style seemed very old fashioned, in that classes (2 1/2 hrs long) didn't consist of much other than random lectures about whatever the professor felt like talking about that day, and often were repetitive and didn't always correspond to the reading. He often wanted us to guess what he was thinking and finish his sentences.
Professor Andrus gives a lecture every class. They are kinda boring. He gives out a lot of opportunities for extra credit. If you do the readings and study for the tests you should get an A no problem. Textbooks are important. Lots of reading
I liked the class and learned a lot.
you watch a lot of movies, pretty chill class, just pay attention to homework
Awesome professor! Very straightforward in what you need to know for the tests. Make sure you go to lecture, your notes will prove to be very helpful.
This guy is AWESOME! He is without a doubt, the nicest professor I've ever had. While struggling w/ personal issues over the past couple months, I missed several classes. Prof. Andrus was very kind & understanding and let me make up the work I had missed for full credit. Also, he is very passionate about this subject. You will learn in this class.
Fairly easy class. A reasonable amount of reading and a quiz each week on the assigned chapter. No papers and all the test info is given to you beforehand if you go to class. Tons of extra credit and lectures are pretty cool. Would definitely take it again
Professor Andrus gives a lecture every class. But he gives out a lot of opportunities for extra credit. You have pop quizzes over the reading every class- they are very specific so pay close attention.
He spends most of class either lecturing or showing movies but the most important thing is the weekly quizzes. Quizes are pretty easy and are based on the assigned reading. Reading is done in books not textbooks.
Professor andrus is a BOSS. do the homework or you'll fail the quizzes.
This professor was great and I had a lot of fun in the class. Learned a lot about anthropology which will help me later on in life.
Talks non stop
Professor Andrus is a really nice guy and you can tell he's really passionate. Honestly, it is sometimes a little difficult to focus through the whole lecture, but if you take good notes you will do really well on the test. Read the assignments! Otherwise you will not pass the quizzes, which make a big difference.
Its easy to get an A as long as you do each reading assignment, make sure to review before each quiz, and prep for the tests. He is more than willing to help you with any questions you have and genuinely wants his students to do well in his class. The tests can be a bit difficult and determine a lot of your grade but he reviews what you need to kno
My experience in this class was great! I enjoyed my professor and felt that they helped me push myself academically. School is school so I couldn't get past that but I really enjoyed my time this semester with this teacher and class.
I enjoyed learning about anthropology with Professor Andrus but found his style of teaching old-fashioned. He was hard to hear and understand. His tests were difficult because he's looking for a specific answer. He gives out plenty of extra credit opportunities. Make sure to do the study guides.
I loved Professor Andrus! He is funny and I loved his lectures. Make sure to do your readings every single week because he quizzes you on them.
Professor Andrus was good. He just talks a lot in his lectures and he seems to go off on tangents. He gives you lots of extra credit opportunities. He wants to help you to get a good grade if he knows who you are. He really likes when you comment in class too. He told me class participation gets extra credit. It was an interesting course.
Professor Andrus is a super nice guy and totally knows his stuff. He is passionate about anthropology. His lectures can be long, but he shows movies quite a bit so that helps to break it up. He is very willing to help. Lots of reading, but if you do it you'll be fine. He also helps a lot on the tests so that's always great! I'd take it again.
I LOVED PROFESSOR ANDRUS! He is the cutest and sweetest professor of all time. His quizzes are kinda hard but as long as you bring your book and do the readings you'll be more than fine. He gives study guides for every test, there are only two -- a final and a midterm-- and everything on the study guides are on the test. Super easy and fun!
Great guy! Cares about his students, wants to help people understand China better. The class was two and a half hours which was long at times, but he helps you get an A.
For the most part, this class is pretty easy. I felt like he prepared us really well for the midterm, but I found the final to be a lot more challenging. The quizzes are usually pretty reasonable as long as you do all of the reading and review it real quick before each class. It was definitely worth the drive to SLC for me!
Professor Andrus is very knowledgeable at Chinese culture and Chinese society. He always gives thoughtful insights about China and anthropological points regarding Chinese culture. I surely enjoy his class. He has excellent TA as well.
Andrus is a great teacher and his classes are fun. Classes are long, but the time flies because the info is interesting. The long paper is a killer unless you start in good time. Great TA. There is good communication.
Master Andrus is a wonderful professor. He really cares about his students and will help you to achieve an A. The movie reviews a little difficult and he requires a 10 page single spaced term paper instead of final. Overall, a great class and professor.
Andrus is a great teacher, definitely knows his stuff, and cares about the students. The tests, however usually have some info that was never really talked about, and poorly worded questions. Also, if you can fill up the space provided on a short answer question you'll likely get the points. Quizzes every class period so you do kinda need to come
He knows what he's talking about when it comes to anthro, but his tests have a lot of unreviewed content that weren't on study guides. His quizzes also have questions about insignificant details from the reading that aren't related to what you talk about in class, and there's a quiz every week. So do the reading and take notes.
Andrus is a pretty good teacher and definitely knows what he's talking about. He might not explain it the best sometimes though. You have to read a ton every week and hope you remember the slightest details of what you read cause he quizzes you every week. Then when you get them wrong he doesn't go over why you got it wrong. Test are also the same.
Professor Andrus is a great professor! He is very familiar with his subject and has great stories on most points that he talks about. Make sure to raise your hand AND talk loudly when you make a comment or he will most likely not hear you! There was a lot more writing for this class than I was comfortable with, but he is willing to help you!
Professor Andrus is a fair grader who makes sure that everyone understands expectations and the grading criteria. His Anth343 class on Chinese culture and society is easy for people like me who have no background in anthropology. There is a large paper that is required, and it took a lot of time, but classes are easy and there are no exams!
Professor Andrus is very knowledgeable and has been teaching a long time and it shows in his ability to teach well. His lectures were always very interesting, he did an excellent job of applying what was being taught to things we were more familiar with and could be applied to our lives making it easier to remember. Overall, great teacher!
Professor Andrus is a good teacher and if you show up, do the reading, and participate you will do well. He only gave two tests but they consisted of about 30 long-answer response. He does, however, go over almost everything from the test in the review. Make sure you show up because he gives reading quizzes at the beginning of each class.
The paper we had to write at the end of the semester was the biggest thing I have ever written. Get ready for that. Otherwise this class was interesting and I enjoyed it.
Professor Andrus is very passionate about Anthropology. Reading for his class is mandatory if you expect to pass all the quizzes at the beginning of class. You won't pass his class if you aren't there for the quizzes. He gives quite a few extra credit opportunities that are a good idea to do them.
Andrus is a tough teacher to have. You basically have to take notes on everything even if it doesn't seem important. Beware of quizzes on obscure reading topics. He is a really good guy and cares about his students. He loves short answer tests so get those pencils sharp! I had an enjoyable time in his class
Great material, not the most clear in lectures and sometimes hard to follow. Gave a lot of extra credit option. Its important to show up to class!
Master Andrus definitely cares about each of the students' and always has interesting stories to tell. However, most of his lectures were exactly the same and didn't even really feel like they directly related to the class. This hasn't been my favorite anthro class I've taken, but it was definitely worth my time.
Brother Andrus is a great teacher and gives you many options to succeed. make sure you read the textbooks and you will be fine in the class. Learn how to be thorough and complete with your answers. Go the extra mile. You will see what I mean.
He was good about accommodating to students! Mostly just lecture based class though that can get pretty long. You def need to do the reading each week to do well on the quizzes and in the class. Tests are pretty hard and majority short answer. You will need to put in the time for studying. He gives lots of extra credit options which really help.
His teaching style is lecture based. He does show some movies and video clips, so that's chill. He offers lots of extra credit opportunities. You have to read a lot and he has a short answer quiz on the reading material at the beginning of every class. Tests are based on review sheets he gives you, so make sure you know everything on there.
I really enjoyed this class. It's not super hard and he is a really nice guy who loves the subject. I learned a lot in this class! Take it from him!
I loved Professor Andrus and this class (Anthropology of Mormonism) was amazing. It was very faith provoking and eye-opening. There is a 20 page paper due at the end of the semester, which takes up a lot of time, but it was one of my favorite assignments in college.
Master Andrus is a good person and seems to love anthropology, but I felt like we weren't given the tools to write all the papers we had. You learn everything in class-- make sure you do the readings. Also there's a huge paper for the final which can be good or bad... I wouldn't take it again, but I know other people did love the class.
Dr. Andrus is an incredible professor and brings some much needed perspective to BY. His lectures are super interesting. You have a medium length reading each week (class is only once a week) and a small quiz on the basic principles at the beginning of class. There are only a few other graded assignments! Completely recommend taking his classes!
Great teacher, I enjoyed the class!!
Andrus is unexpectedly hilarious. The class is heavily lecture-based but he tells you exactly what will be on the tests. You definitely need to attend class every day.
Cares about the students and the material. Amazing at the knowledge and research that he has completed. Taking this class as a senior, it did seem like busy work, but very worth it. He is an awesome teacher!
He is a good professor in general. He respects students and class is fun. It requires a lot of readings but as long as you read all materials, you will get a good grade.
I am not an anthropology major, so I was not accustomed to this much reading, but I found each of the reading assignments interesting (especially the laws of sympathetic magic). I loved learning to see the overlap between Mormonism and anthropology. The final paper is a big part of the grade, but you get to choose the topic, so it's pretty fun.
I would definitely take Mr. Andrus' class again! There are no exams, only a long paper (time consuming but very easy to do). His grading criteria is very clear. There was a short (very easy) quiz based on the reading each week. He's a great teacher, the class was interesting, and it's super easy to get an A.
Master Andrus is easy going. He teaches some cool anthropology concepts and specializes in Chinese and Mormon societies. Its a manageable work load as long as you start on the group project and semester paper early on in the course.
Professor Andrus has a lot of personal experience with Chinese anthropology, which is why he really knows his stuff and can lecture from experience. His expectations are straight-forward. We were graded on a reading quiz in each class, a group project, and a large paper that admittedly took a lot of work.
Prof. Andrus is great! He is extremely knowledgeable and can be funny at times, too. He has a lot of firsthand experience with China and knows a lot of anthropological literature on the topic as well. The class would be 1.0 for difficulty, but I put 3.0 because he requires you to write a 10-page single space (so really 20 page) paper.
I really enjoyed my class with Master Andrus. I thought I was pretty knowledgeable in Chinese culture already but I learned a ton from him! The class was pretty rough for me as it was 2.5 hours long once a week but it actually became one of my favorites really quickly. The 20 page paper isn't too hard, just get a start on it early.
Professor Andrus is a great teacher! He explains concepts clearly and often goes over concepts several times to make sure we all understood it. If you don't do the reading, the quizzes for each class can be a bit challenging but there is so much extra credit that it shouldn't affect your grade that much. One 20-page paper and a group project.
Master Andrus is really great! He has so much experience with the Chinese people. He has been an educator for years and is good at what he does! I learned so much. We did group presentations, watched Chinese films, took quizes and wrote a couple papers. One of my favorite classes!
Take this class just show up the one time a week its scheduled. flexible on due dates
Great teacher! I really enjoyed the class!
Professor Andrus is a very nice older man. He does a pretty good job at telling you what is going to be on the test. The course has a lot of reading and in order to do well on the reading quizzes you need to read. He isnt very good at grading things, but if you read, and pay attention and take good notes, you'll be fine.
Professor Andrus is the man! He is passionate about the subject and wants everyone in his class to succeed. I would take again if I needed to.
The tests were very difficult and a majority of your grade. If you're taking for an easy general consider another class. He has a nice sense of humor and loves BYU sports though!!
Professor Andrus was a good teacher for the required credit. If you show up to class and read the assigned reading which was never too much, you'll do great. However, there were only two tests for the semester which means that those tests make up majority of your grade. He is so nice though and is willing to work with students.
The class met once a week for 2 1/2 hours though we always had a break about halfway through. The class was nice and discussion + lecture based and he never discouraged questions or interest!
Btother Andrus is a great guy and really enjoys teaching and cares about the students. There is a ton of reading and a quiz every week. You must show up to class in order to get a good grade on tests. You need to study for tests since they are all short answer. He's not the best grader in the world, but offered a lot of extra credit!
Master Andrus is a great professor and I enjoyed his Chinese Anthropology class. It's a great class to take if you need a few extra credits.
Brother Andrus is such a nice guy! He is so humble and kind and cares very much about what he teaches. There is not final but there is a ten page single spaced paper at the end of the semester.
There's plenty of opportunities for extra credit. If you do the readings you will do well on the questions of the day. And pay attention in class; you will pass the class with an A.
Professor Andrus was the sweetest man!!! He has a clear passion for anthropology and is very clear about what he expects from you. Be warned, there is a lot of reading every week. He also holds reading quizzes with pretty specific questions every week. If all else fails, Andrus provides a lot of extra credit!
He is a super sweet professor, but his lectures go off topic and kind of hard to sit through. You only take a midterm and final and if you study you'll be fine, but they are pretty lengthy and you have to put exactly what he's looking for. He gives extra credit opportunities.
Very kind professor, he definitely wants you to succeed. He gives a ton of opportunity for extra credit and it is an easy A if you do the reading, take notes in class, and study for the test.
He's a very kind and caring professor. He is willing to work with you if you need help. He doesn't just hand things to you though. If you put in the work, you should do just fine.
Class is actually ANTHR 346 2 major projects: group presentation and a 10 page single-spaced paper. They weren't too bad. No exams! Just little reading quizzes. Also watched 2 movies in class and wrote reviews on them. Really discussion based and sometimes "guess what the professor is thinking." Really great guy!! Extra credit opportunities!
Great teacher!
Not my favorite class, but okay overall. Be sure to speak up and write a lot on the quizzes.
Fairly easy class but can be kind of long in the evenings.
This class was pretty much awful. He doesn't put the syllabus or schedule on learning suite, and only goes off the paper syllabus that he gives you the first day of class. He will read grades out loud in class, even on exams. I'm pretty sure that's not legal... He makes the class harder than it needs to be, even though Anthro isn't that hard.
The man cannot hear and needs a hearing aid. His lecture notes are pretty disorganized. If you do the readings, you'll be ok but make sure and study for the tests.
Master Andrus was a great teacher! I would totally recommend taking this class to anyone. It was educational and not overly hard either. A lot of extra credit opportunities is a great plus!
Take good notes and learn to organize them conceptually. He prefers essay questions which is more work for him and you, because you have to demonstrate conceptual and relational mastery of the topic. Grades are definitely proportion to time and effort.
He is a good professor. He has a particular way of thinking about anthropology and if you can answer along his line of thinking, you can do well!
Anrus is cool. He is very particular about his grading on tests. I was overconfident on the first test. The class isnt hard if you devote time to it, just dont take any shortcuts!
Master Andrus is a cool teacher. He wants to see his students succeed so he offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, there is a daily quiz every week but if you do the reading it should be pretty basic. He is always happy to help and be of assistance. He is really nice.
The class is all about how you do on the tests. There is extra credit, but it does not do a ton to the overall grade. Professor Andrus is a weird guy. That being said he wants his students to succeed so if you have to, stay after class and he'll help you out/tell you what you need to do to succeed in his class.
He is a very odd professor. He has an extremely particular way of grading and I often lost points because I worded things "wrong". Your grade is based on how well you do on the tests which are very long and only include essay questions. There are lots of extra credit opportunities, but they are a lot of work for a little gain.
Andrus is an interesting professor. from requesting to be called "Master Andrus" to not being able to hear all the comments made in class. He grades pretty hard on daily quizzes based on reading (sometimes a lot). Make sure to stay the whole time for tests and write a lot on tests and quizzes.
The tests are all short answer which could make them harder if you don't know the material.
Hes a good professor with tons of good insight. Knows a ton about Anthropology and loves it, and can tell when his students love it too. Great dude, just not clear with his lectures. Although hell give you the information you need its usually kind of hard to follow. Tough grader- you need to write a TON to get a good grade. Cant hear very well
Great teacher but need to attend everything and read all assignments very carefully! But lots of extra credit is given to help the tough daily reading quiz's. There is one every day so really read the assignments really well!
Professor Andrus is a typical anthropology professor. He assigns a lot of reading and there are quizzes for those that sometimes can be a little tricky. Other than that, there is not a lot of weekly homework. The final paper, however, is a little bit of a doozie because it is 20 pages. Overall a not a hard class.
Not accessible outside of class. Can be difficult to understand what he wants you to understand from readings. Midterm exam was all prompted free/short response. Requires three textbooks, but only really uses one.
Knowledgable but kinda odd and asks questions that encourage students to randomly guess. Not sure if normally like that or because it was his first online class. Lots of reading and one-page responses, but is easy going on grading and gives extra credit to "superb" papers. Exams are all written response. Easy A if you show up and do the reading.
Professor Andrus is flexible on due dates and usually accepts late work for full credit. Easy to tell he enjoys his job. Lots of reading & papers due every week, but it is also easy to get extra credit (like if you write a bit extra or do a specific bonus assignment). Not sure what it is like in person, but overall, a decent online class.
Super easy A (I got like 110%) but he is by far the worst professor I've ever had at BYU. He'll never respond to an email, there are no rubrics, and he teaches the same 3 lessons like 5 times but expects you to be attentive at every lecture. Spare yourself and look for a more engaging professor if possible.
He struggled with technology, so the Zoom class was an issue. He also constantly lost assignments on his email, and called people out at the beginning of class if they were missing things. Very biased grading toward anthropology and Chinese studentshe always gave them extra credit. Class lacked structure. Big final paper, lots of mini papers.
This is by far the worst class that I have taken at BYU. So many papers and super unorganized and boring lectures. If you don't have to take this course for credit I really wouldn't.
This guy does a page a week, plus 2 pages every few weeks, then 6 pages for a midterm and final, and then a couple more 2 pagers in there. And they're all single space, so double it, and then the topics are pretty vague and ambiguous. Lectures were bad. In the last week of class, there was a total of 10 single space pages due... for a 101 class.
Lots of papers, including several movie reviews and a 1 page single-spaced reflection on the reading due every class. He doesn't have a rubric available for anything and didn't give me much feedback or guidelines when I asked how I could improve my papers in the future. Had to turn everything in via email
This class was AWESOME! If you like writing, or would rather write than take a multiple choice test, this class is for you. I took it Spring which was so easy and awesome. HW: Read, then write one page paper reflection of your personal experiences. Midterm/final are writing 3, 2 pg papers. Gives extra credit for participating in class.
The class isn't horribly hard itself, but he is not up to date with tech at all. It can be a drag when its an online class, and all you get is 1 very short and vague syllabus he emails you at the start for very limited instruction for EVERY assignment in the class, so it makes it difficult to know how to do assignments right and get a good grade.
Pros: -Fairly easy -Mostly writing, no tests -Easy readings -Movies -Likes getting to know his students Cons: -Struggles A LOT with technology -Will dock points off your assignments with no feedback -You have to submit assignments via email, but he always loses them and calls you out in front of the class -Long lectures
This class is a writing-heavy course, but if you're willing to put in the work, it can be a breeze. The lectures can be dull, but using Unstuck ai for study prep really helped me stay on top of the assignments. Just be prepared for some tech struggles from the professor!
