Lectures are pointless and doesn't go over anything that is going to be on the test.
His lectures are interesting and funny. I really enjoyed his class.
very funny guy. is always cracking jokes, but is very unorganized and doesn't go over half of what's on the tests. lectures are interesting and keep your attention. my suggestion-do some psych experiments for extra credit!
awesome class...very easy if you just study night before test...make notecards! i did and got an A! his class is so interesting too cuz hes a funny fella!
Do the extra credit. he tells stories more than teaches which makes the class interesting, but it doesnt help you learn or help you on the tests.
Brainerd likes to tell stories. It takes all lecture to sum up about 20 minutes of material. Tests are multiple choice, but they are tricky. Study!
likes to make fun of his ex-wife. he is balding and tells nasty, provocative jokes. if you want to sit there and say, what the hell is up with this teacher, then take the class. otherwise, do not take it.
Lazy!! Does not go over 1/3 of the material for the test. Does not grade tests promptly (even though they're taken on scantron.) Tells jokes the whole class (and during the test)and helps you learn nothing. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!
Def needs to stop with the bad jokes that take 15 mins to tell, and needs to actually cover material that ur going to be tested on. He cares more about trying to look cool then actually teaching and then tests you on stuff you can only get from reading.
This guy is awesome. Yea, he cracks jokes a lot and sometimes doesnt get to everything on the tests, but this is college, you are supposed to do that by yourself. Much better than the boring professors you are used to.
Dr. Brainerd was off the wall during his lectures. On the day of tests, he would show up late. He did not lecture on 3/4 of the material that was on the tests. I would not recommend taking his class. You will be miserable!!
One of the most unique professors you will have at CU. Conducts interesting lectures and covers what is NECESSARY in class. *Make sure you study the chapter tests and answers from the book. He uses many questions from them on the exams*
It was a hard class. Brainerd is a nice guy, he was helpful to me (I had mono the term I took his class). I don't recommend taking the class if you don't like multiple choice questions on your tests. he is very funny and I suggest doing the experiments for extra credit, they help.
sure, brainerd is weird. i took him last semester and got by w/ a low B. he doesn't cover 75% of the material, but hey, his eccentric nature and crazy ass jokes made up for all of the other dull teachers I had. study the quizzes and on-line questions. READ THE BOOK!!
he is a funny guy, will keep you entertained, but covers barely any material in class. If you want a good grade you have to read everything in the book and study forever. he also always shows up about 10 mintues late for class
He is a cool guy, and a hilarious teacher, but he will cover about 1 chapter for a test on 4 chapters. He tells so many stories, which makes the class go by quickly, but you barely learn anything. To pass, you HAVE to study and read independently. Decent tests, slack attendance policy.
he is hilarious... and if you go to him he is very helpful! you have to definitely do the reading on your own outside of class... he only covers the MAJOR stuff... but he tells you what you need to know on his "knowledge checklist"... i'd take him again!
Honors. HILARIOUS man. Tests were straight-forward, and he was very clear about the amount of material from lecture versus reading. Does NOT go over reading in class, so plan on outside time. Honors just has an essay question appended to every test, no research or extra project. Good class.
According to him, his class is a lot like his ex-wife, easy and a good time! I made A's on all the tests but one. Minimal studying for tests, he lays the test questions out in Knowledge Check Lists. Study whats on the list and you should have it made.
Even though he was funny in class sometimes, I felt totally unprepared for his tests. He doesn't lecture on 75% of the material covered on the test. You teach yourself everything. Fun at first, but def not @ test time. Once he didn't show up on test day. Unorganized and unstructered class.

Never taught anything in class. When he came to class he was never prepared. He once came to class without the test that he was suppose to be giving that day.
I think everyone else has summed it up pretty well here. Doesn't teach a lot in class, funny guy (can sometimes over do it), does give good test study guides.
He is an excellent professor. He knows his stuff and explains it with several examples.
He never stops with his "Funny jokes" I understand he is trying to be entertaining, but be boring, teach well, let me learn and in turn, I will get a good grade rather than having to teach myself. He is like a child!
Usually teaches about 15% of the material that will appear on the test. It's not that bad if you read the book and teach yourself.
interesting to listen to for about half the class, then you want to pull your hair out. lectures arent very helpful on the test

Easy advice, DON'T TAKE HIM.
His lecture is basically 1 hr of personal stories. If you want to do well in this class you have to memorize the information from the study guides he sends out before the test. It is a lot of reading the book. A LOT!! He takes attendance and his lecture has nothing to do with what is on the tests.
His class is a joke. Avoid it at all costs. Nothing from class helps on the test because he rambles about his life stories the entire class. Tests are hard and come straight from the book.
Talks a lot in class about irrelevant things; however, if you can read the chapters and study some you should do fine. If you are not willing to study/read out of class then I do not reccommend taking him. Otherwise, I thought he was good.
His stories have no relevance to anything he's attempting to teach, but they're pretty entertaining. Tests are only hard if you don't review the questions at the end of each chapter. The questions are verbatim. Little to no effort required for this class. Attendance policy is a joke, but you'll want to go to class anyway.
His class is very easy! All you have to do is read the chapters and memorize the questions at the end of every chapter. People only think he's hard because they don't want to open the book! He's entertaining and very smart!! Very helpful outside of class too!
Enthusiastic. Loves to hear himself talk.
his lectures are just stories about his life, he might go over 10% of what is going to be on the test, but besides that you have to learn it all on your own. read the chapters, work on the book companion site, and memorize the tests at the end of each chapter and you'll be fine.
AVOID THIS CLASS AND PROFESSOR AT ALL COST! Extremely pointless class; lectures are purely entertainment and jokes. He seriously needs his own stand-up show. Interesting material .. just not presented well AT ALL, which was a huge disappointment.
Always makes it interesting in class, and is pretty funny.

Funny but tests aren't
horrible
Agree with other 330 review. Class is a disappointment as the material is highly interesting but the Dr. lacks any logical presentation. Lectures ARE just entertainment hours (and 15 mins). do read the book. tests are worded tricky. funny guy, just make sure he doesn't get the last laugh on test day. KNOW YOUR MATERIAL!
dont do it, he never teches required material, then tests you on everything he didnt say. not funny either, even though he thinks he is. no help outside of class either so dont bother, never answers emails either. just not a good teacher in any aspect.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR! Clemson couldve done better! His lectures are completely pointless and he just likes to hear himself talk, NOT about the material on the tests! AVOID THIS PROFESSOR
DO NOT TAKE HIM! HE IS HORRIBLE! IF YOU CAN'T GET OUT THEN MAKE SURE TO STUDY THE BACK OF THE CHAPTERS AND READ THE BOOK! THIS IS THE WORSE TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!!!!!!
He gets off topic, but his lectures are funny and tries to guarentee and A or B by giving extra credit tests and study guides!
Really funny! Great professor, keeps things interesting
Funny but pointless lectures. Just read and outline the book with the knowledge check lists
He likes to tell stories... and they're really funny. the people who don't like him are just lazy and won't do the outlines that he gives out that say EXACTLY what's going to be on the test. He's a great teacher!
Take notes on the stuff he says twice in lecture, learn all the stuff on the outline from the book, and you should get an A
He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities, and outlines what will be on the tests, the questions at the end of the chapter in the book are KEY! :)
Funny man but HORRIBLE teacher. Does not teach anything relevant to the test.
His motivational psych class was the only course i took this year that i didn't dread going to. The course was difficult, but he makes up for it by curving the test grades, and he gives VERY fair and easy final exams.
Avoid him at all costs. He is probably the worst lecturer ive ever had in my entire life. His lectures arent on anything on the test. He really just likes the sound of his voice. I do not recommend taking him at all! Oh, and hes kind of a jerk.
awh hell. no sir. avoid! avoid! avoid! nuff said.
fun professor
He does not teach what is on the tests, the tests are tricky. The averages for tests are always very low. The extra credit test does help though
He's crazy and he always talks about his ex-wife Helga the she-wolf... he tries to make it fun and keep you awake but the tests are somewhat hard
He made this class seem really easy. He lectures in a way that makes note taking easy and structured. He tries to make jokes and laughs a lot, which wastes time, but does keep you awake. He's a really nice guy who wants to help. He lets you go over all the tests before the final - which is made up of questions from all those tests. EASY A!
Dr. Brainerd isn't that bad of a teacher, but if you want to do well in his class you need to teach yourself a lot. He is kind of vulgar at times during lectures, but some people like that kind of thing because they think it is funny. Make sure you read all the chapters and do the study guides for the tests. The tests are not that easy.
Classes are good becuase he is a funny guy. His tests are extremely HARD for an intro so dont think its an easy elective class. Be prepared to read your book cover to cover because his notes will not help you. This is a class you must work independently in and study long hours for the tests..
Don't take him unless you absolutely have to, if you are taking the class to fill a requirement its not worth it.
Dr Brainerd is funny, sometimes. But that is about where it ends. You must read the book in order to pass the tests.
horrible teacher. rambles on and on about things that have no relevance to the material. tests are very difficult but he does provide a study guide although it is not much help AT ALL. study the questions in the back of the chapter
he was really fun but he is impossible to get in touch with. he wastes a lot of time talking about things that don't have anything to do with the lecture.
He was a very hard teacher. His tests were unclear and he didn't prepare you for them. He was funny but very derrogatory against women not being at the intellect of males. I would recommend you getting any other teacher.
I loved him as a teacher and he gave so many opportunities for extra credit, it was nearly impossible not to get at least a B. You do have to read your book, but what teacher who isn't just handing you a grade doesn't? Anyway, just do the study guides he gives out and do the extra credit and you should get an easy A in this class.
Dr. Brainerd is a good teacher. He provides a study guide, tells you what he cannot cover in class, and he is engaging. No one should whine about having to read the book...the text book that the class is based on. Come on, suck it up and work toward a grade. A professor's job is to guide you as you teach yourself anyway.
Dr. Brainard rambles about pointless stories in class, but considering he has you in there for 65 minutes, it makes class more interesting. If you read the book and put forth effort without expecting an A to be given to you, you'll do well in the class. An A is definitely possible. He really isn't that hard and gives extra credit.
Cool in lecture, but exams are difficult. He does gives you a lot of extra credit chances though.
He is a very funny teacher...teaches the material he gets too well...however, he may not cover all of the chapters that will be on the test. Tests are fair....
Good teacher. Funny at times. However, the exams can be tricky...Plus, he will NOT cover everything in class. You may have to read the chapter and learn on your own. PAY ATTENTION to the little sidenotes/pictures/ and diagrams in the book! You could be questioned on them. Plus, pay attention to his stories in class. He will test you on them too!
Class is like storytime. Instead of actually teaching what is on the tests, Brainerd tends to tell stories that he feels somehow relate to the material. Therefore, it is entirely up to the student to read carefully every reading assignment in the book.
Dr. Brainerd is one of the funniest professors at Clemson! He can be a little "free" with his language, so some of the stuff can be a little offensive. He tells great stories and gives excellent examples. However, hardly any material for tests is covered in class. You REALLY have to study the book to pass his class.
What everyone else said is true: a lot of what he says in class is more set up for his jokes than material. I personally would rather learn from a book than a professor anyways, and the content is simple enough for this to be a reasonable possibility for most people. He's a good guy though, just bring your computer to class so you can dick around.
Very funny professor who really knows what he is talking about. Tests are very detailed and come mostly from the text. Lectures are very interesting, but tests aren't solely on the lectures. Good professor for a first-time psychology class
He covers very little test material in class. However, he does post a review guide online, but you will have to read the book. 75% of the tests are from the book. Also, it takes him over a month to give tests back =(
He is a funny guy and tells a lot of stories during class. It is usually pretty interesting but he doesn't teach most of the material that is on the exam. He does give an exam checklist before the test so you can see what you need to know and look it up in the book.
This teacher is funny, adorable and insanely rotund. I absolutely love this class. He helps so much with his study guides and extra credit. This class should be aired on Comedy Central. (seriously)!
The only material he uses on the test are the questions at the end of each chapter in the text. He requires you to go to class, but usually forgets attendence sheets. Tests are EXTREMELY HARD. This professor is NOT easy. Wouldn't advise taking him.
This was his firstr time teaching cognitive, so u have to give him a little slack. But basically just used textbook test questions, taught maybe 1/10 of what you needed to know for test, and made class boring. Took FOREVER to get tests graded! Avoid if possible
Terrbile teacher. Goes on long rampages with no connection to the subject, in addition to terrible jokes.
Yes, he is boring but he keeps the class entertained with his long tangents and many stories. His tests aren't that bad as long as you read and study the notes you do have. I didn't put a lot of effort into the class and pulled out with a B.
tells unfunny jokes all class- leads you to believe that tests will be as easy going as the lecture...definitely not the case!! very difficult and rarely from anything taught in class. avoid.
OMG!! I love Dr. B! he is hilarious and never boring. He keeps class interesting and makes outlines of everything that will be on the test. I don't understand this feedback from other students. He was def my best teacher this semester! Take him!!
One of my favorite teachers at Clemson. Very intelligent, Easy going, and really funny. Test difficulty is moderate but it is easy to make an A with all the extra credit oppurtunities he allows. Very cool guy to chat with. He has a PHD in Psych and has done many cool things that he loves to tell about. This is the way teachers should be.
I have a 105 average in the class right now. This class is EASY. The exams are EASY. READ THE BOOK, it's that simple. Don't expect the professor to spoon feed you all the information for the exam. He says in the syllabus that even though he won't cover all of the book material, you are still responsible for it!!!
READ THE BOOK! he gives long somewhat boring lectures in class. Some of the test questions come from the lectures, but most of the material is from the book. Lectures are not mandatory, and I would suggest avoiding, just as long as you keep track with the schedule in the book and know when exams are (he likes to miss class too).
I personally thought Brainerd was hilarious. I think the negative reviews are people who don't give class the time of day. There's information from class and from the text. Stuff covered in class is what's most heavy on the test, but READ THE BOOK. Use the study guides. I got an A by reading and showing up to copy the info on his transparenies.
I never went to class because attendence was not mandatory. This class is not a breeze, and he doesn't just give you baby questions, he gives senerio type questions. He sometimes gets his questions from the end of the chapter test as well. He goes on and on about nothing, but overall if you read the book you should get an A.
To the person below me, this class IS a breeze if you actually GO to class. ;) I finished with a 95 on the final and a 97 in the class. At one point I had a 110 in the class. You made it difficult by not going to class and you have no one to blame but yourself for that one.
This is an easy class if you attend and read the book. He's hilarious as a teacher, which helps keep your interest. He doesn't cover a lot of the material in class, but he covers some things that aren't in the book. He puts study guides on blackboard, which help as well. The final is basically a bunch of old test questions. Easy if you study.
honestly Dr. Brainerd's class is my absolute favorite class. He is such a genuine and hilarious guy and I literally laugh the entire class period. He is extremely passionate and very accommodating. I took psych in highschool, so its an easy repeat- most of it is out of the book and extremely easy to understand. if you study youll get an A
GREAT teacher. 201's probably my favorite class. Yes, he does use the book a lot but you don't have to read it. Fill out/study checklists and study the review questions and chapters' review q's and it's an easy A. There's plenty of extra credit, too. And he goes off into stories in class because he's preparing you for the scenario-like test q's.
This class is somewhat difficult because the book is so terrible. He is a very nice guy but wastes time by telling unimportant stories and sometimes inappropriate comments and then runs out of time for the important stuff. His tests are OK but some of the questions are hard to understand. Definitely read everything and make lots of flash cards!
Dr. Brainerd's a funny guy, but his tendency to tell tangent stories that loosely relate to the point he's trying to get across is somewhat annoying when he hasn't covered all the lecture material for exams. You'll have to teach yourself from the book, but the exams are easy enough that you can get by without too much effort beyond readings.
Love him! His class is so interesting. He makes everything really easy. He is great because he repeats everything he wants you to know for the test and gives you time to copy the info from his notes. It helps to have previous psych knowledge but you don't need it. Fill out the study guides and the tests will be so easy!
Dr. Brainerd is hilarious, explains things well, and makes this class a breeze. As long as you listen in class and do the study guides, you can get an A very easily. Low workload. One of my favorite classes! Every lecture is like a stand up comedy routine!
Dr. Brainerd tells A LOT of stories, and he really loves what he does. When he wants you to know something, he makes it very clear. Very easy as long as you attend class and study the study guide he sends out.
Very easy class. Professor is very nice and has a great sense of humor. Made A's on all the tests by just looking at the review sheets and then looking up the terms on it. I recommend this class.
I like psychology, but Brainerd made it almost impossible to enjoy. He rarely discusses anything that will be on the tests - which are very hard - and instead spends all of his time telling irrelevant stories. Avoid if possible, especially if you're in it for a good grade.
Took this class because I had him for 201 and loved him. This class was a lot harder. He's a nice, funny guy, but we rarely got through all the material before the test. You have to go through the book and learn some stuff on your own. It takes him a long time to grade, and he's not good with email.
Tells way too many stories and takes forever to get his points across. Is really funny but gets old after a while. In order to do well on tests you have to look everything up in the book, but he does provide a clear study guide.
Super nice guy but extremely unorganized. Usually this doesn't bother me, but he makes it really difficult. Claims if it isn't on the study guide that we can forget about it then tests on things not on the study guide.
Pretty funny, good sense of humor. He is very laid back, but doesn't get through much material because he tells too many pointless stories. Entertaining for the most part, but can also put you to sleep at times. if you want to learn a lot during the class time, I dont recommend him.
Tells a lot of random stories (most are pointless). His tests come straight from his "knowledge checklists" Study those and you're good to go. Class is boring most of the time. He offers an extra credit test, too. Just do what he says and you'll make an A.
He tells a lot of funny stories but doesn't get through a fraction of the material that are on his tests. He does provide a study guide that covers everything on the exams, but it's up to you to look up the information.
Extremely funny in the beginning, but it gets really old and annoying after a while. Only covers a very little amount of the course content and has long stories that uses ages to get to the main point. Tests are straight from his Knowledge Checklist, but lectures are of very little help. You need to study a lot by yourself and you will be fine.
NOT. GOOD. Was funny at the beginning just because he cussed every other word, but after the first two weeks its extremely annoying and the only one laughing is himself. He only covers the material he wants to talk about, and leaves the other 5 chapters on the test up to you. Nice guy, but slack teacher. Get someone else if at all possible.
The guy is hilarious, he gets old pretty quick, but hes always jolly and id rather listen to his corny jokes than a drab teacher. Definitely a joke of a class. Rarely ever went, and im sitting at a 90 right now. Gives study guides for all tests. Highly recommended, as long as youre taking it as a GenEd.
Jokes the entire class and gives a study guide of everything that will be on the test. I'd rather listen to his jokes than a boring lecture.
Tries to keep the lectures light and is humorous. The class is enjoyable, but the tests are based 1/3 in-class information only, 1/3 in-book information only, and 1/3 that is both in-class and from the book. Not great for making studying simple. Overall, I'd take this class again, easy A if you know how to read.
Yep, the jokes are corny. Half the class was pointless stories. He spends so much time on one point instead of trying to cover more material...So you have to read all that he left out. But it's easy, I aced the class with flying colors. He gives you a study guide before the test that has all you need to know on it. You do need the class notes too.
The fact that I'm writing this during class should say enough. FB is old, espn is read, I can't listen to his pointless, boring stories for another second. Have a lineup of websites to browse or you're down for the count. He's a brilliant, well-respected professor, but not the best teacher.
I'm writing while in class prior to a major exam, so that shows how important his lectures are. He goes off on long-winded anecdotes that were amusing at first.. Overall, it is an interesting course and he provides VERY helpful study guides. He is the best 201 teacher by far, but the class is easily self taught with the book
He's a hilarious and fun guy, but not so great at covering the material
He makes psychology easy and fun to learn!
If you want to learn psychology and do well then dont take this class. He's a funny guy but youre wasting your time sitting in class because he isnt covering information. You really have to spend a lot of time taking notes from the textbook.
Terrible teacher. I can't understand what he's saying because he stutters so much. You have to do everything from the book. He goes off on tangents in class and does not cover the material.
He gives such long examples for the material, you forget what the example is even about. Easy tests, you have to teach yourself everything from the book (He usually doesn't cover all the material before the tests because he goes so slowly with so many 15 minute long examples) however, I have a 101 in the class and never pay attention
I LOVE HIM! Best teacher I've had at Clemson simply because he's hilarious and makes going to class worth it. His tests are easy if you use common sense and read the textbook. He even gives everyone an awesome study guide to use. A lot of people complain about his classes being boring and it's probably because THEY'RE boring. Take him.
Dr. B is very entertaining and funny! His jokes don't get old. You HAVE to read every word of the textbook and do the study guide to make an A but those are not difficult at all. Get the SG from someone who has already taken it--they're lengthy. Lectures attendance is required but not very helpful. You know exactly what is on the exam! TAKE HIM!!!
He is really boring and goes off on 10 minute tangents about an example that most of the time doesn't relate. Bores me so much would not recommend
Funny guy and very interesting teacher, but he doesn't cover enough material in class. Pretty much you show up to class, listen to him make jokes, then you have to go home and try to teach yourself the material. Easy B if you study, to get an A you really have to read and study the textbook.
He has weird stories. Literally impossible to pay attention. He is funny which is a plus side. I could not focus at all and learned nothing the whole class. I was on pinterest the whole time. I made D's on every test. I don't recommend taking him
There is no point in going to class at all. He is funny and loves psychology, but he just rambles about stories that do not help at all. I got an A because studied the book and the study guides like crazy. I had to put in a lot more effort teaching myself because he taught me nothing.
NO POINT IN GOING TO CLASS because he just rambles on about his ex wife and his crazy life. He is really funny but it is aggravating because I wanted him to teach. I was super interested in psych but he completely RUINED IT FOR ME. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He does not teach. You go to class, he tells stories that vaguely go with the material. He never follows his syllabus and most of the material you learn on your own time. I do not recommend taking him. Also, he is always late and that's just annoying. However he is funny, but in a way you just want to mock him. So no. Find a different professor.
He is very funny and tells great stories, but does not cover all of the information in class. He provides "Sheets of Knowledge" to study for the tests - as long as you complete these (about 8 pages long) you should pass with an A or B.
I like Brainerd a lot. He's a knows his stuff and tries to make lecture entertaining. I soared through his 201 class but this course was different. Too much material on his exams you had to find yourself in the book and his study guides were WAY too long. He also scheduled an exam after we returned from fall break. An A will take some work.
This class is not hard. All you have to do is sit and listen. If you do and don't get distracted you can get an A. Everyone is very harsh on him. He is a great teacher. I have never had such an insightful and smart professor. It's your responsibility to pay attention and not to get distracted.
Brainerd is annoying. Classes are mandatory to go to because there's a sign in sheet. (Just have a friend sign in for you. He won't notice.) He's literally the worst teacher I've ever had. He doesn't do a good job teaching and most people agree that it's easier to just do the Knowledge Checklist than to go to class. Pick a different teacher.
Brainerd is a funny guy, but as a professor there was something lacking in his lectures. While his tales of the awkward lives of the psychologists we studied were amusing, they took up the majority of the class and left us at least a chapter behind for every exam. If you don't memorize each chapter (the ones missed and covered) you're SOL.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had. He gives a very specific (approximately 9 pages) knowledge checklist, which pretty much consists of the entire book. He may get through one idea during the entire lecture because he's too busy trying to be funny and telling stupid stories. Get ready to read basically the whole book to get an A.
awful! do not take him , PLEASE DONT TAKE HIM! he does not teach at all. You must read the book
This class was extremely difficult, the tests were anyway. His lectures are not too bad, just long. His tests, however, are extremely difficult. They covered a ton of material and nit-picky. I would study all week and still do bad on the tests. He is a very sweet and enthusiastic man, but his tests are hard and he takes forever to grade.
Brainerd spends most of his time telling pointless stories that have nothing to do with the class. He'll only get through one or two points on the powerpoint per class. He does provide a "study guide" but it basically encompasses the entirety of the textbook. If you don't have the text memorized, you won't do well. Worst professor.
Dr Brainerd is hilarious. The thing is I hate psychology. If you're looking to really LEARN psychology, don't take him. If you're like me and just want a gen ed requirement, then he is fine. I played sudoku all class period and just read the book when I got back. All the test material comes straight from the text. He also gives an extra credit exam
He gets off topic all the time but it makes the class better and he usually gets back on track
The entire course is straight from the book (even his power points). He gives out knowledge checklists that are a basic summary of anything you need to know from the book, which makes it easier because you don't even have to take your own notes. If you don't mind teaching yourself fairly easy material, then this is a good class to take!
Brainerd is nice. He really wants his student to like him. He tries a little too hard to get students to like him. He makes a lot of jokes and has a lot of opportunities for extra credit, but the class is still tough. Tests are the only grades and there's a lot of material on them. You have to study!
Dr. Brainerd is a nice guy. He's funny too. But what I can't stand is how he'll only cover a little over one chapter in class per unit, and then test us on three. You literally are told to read the textbook. Aside from that, he does give a lot of extra credit which is nice. For good attendance you get EC, there's an EC test, and he curves the exams
Dr. Brainerd is super funny. His lectures are very long but theyre pretty entertaining. The tests are easy as long as you read the textbook. Hes really lenient with attendence, make up tests, and extra credit. Great guy I loved his class.
Dr. Brainerd was an interesting guy and I really learned a lot from his lectures. But the lectures did not prepare me for the exams. You will have to read a lot and follow his knowledge checklist to prepare for the exams. Tough class.
This class was so annoying. I didn't learn anything in the lectures because he would take an hour and a half to go over 5 slides. But, I had to go to the lectures because attendance is mandatory. You essentially teach yourself by completing the knowledge checklists. If you do that, you'll pass the tests.
If you read the textbook you will be fine. He takes questions from the quizzes at the end of each chapter. His knowledge checklists also give you direct insight to the test. He can be funny but it gets tiring after an hour and 15 minutes. Attendance is mandatory but you could probably get someone to sign your name in, there are 200 people in class.
Dr. Brainerd is overall an okay teacher. He often gets sidetracked and spends a lot of classtime telling stories. However, he is very funny and entertaining. He gives study guides for each exam, and if you know all of the information on the study guides, you'll make an A. He also curves the tests and gives an extra credit test.
Dr. Brainerd is a very funny guy and made his online lectures extremely entertaining and worth going to. I have a thorough disdain of online classes, but this class was arguably one of my favorites. I learned a lot by going to class and reading the book. He goes over a good amount in lecture, but be prepared to read the book for some stuff.
Dr. B is funny and kind but his lectures felt like a bad use of time. Class notes unneeded because exams are from book, with MAYBE one question per test from class. DO get the extra points for not missing many classes because the exams are actually fairly tricky even after reading text. Was the difference between grades for me. DO READ THE BOOK.
i wouldn't recommend taking him. he goes off topic so much during lecture. he tells stories that aren't even related to the class. you basically have to teach yourself to prepare for tests.
Get's off topic a lot and doesn't get through material quick enough before the test so you'll have to use your book a lot.
Dr. Brainerd is so funny and a really nice guy! I love going to his lectures because they're very entertaining. But, the lectures are very unnecessary to go to because he will spend all 75 minutes of class going off on tangents and telling stories. He will teach one chapter and test you on 3 others. It's mostly working on your own.
Extremely talkative, and although he does go off on tangents he is a wonderful professor. He provides A TON of extra credit opportunities, you get extra credit for attendance. Despite what others have said his lectures are actually meaningful, and not difficult if you fill out the knowledge checklist and USE CENGAGE it really helps.
Dr. Brainerds' class is easy to pass. I did not come to class for almost half of the semester and with all the extra credit still passed with a high B. His lectures can be useful and his knowledge checklists for each tests he sends out are very useful. The easiest way to pass is to read the chapters a week before the test then go over the notes.
He moves very slow. A test will be on 4 chapters and we will only cover 1 or 2 in class and even in the class we barely go over them. He answers his emails, but is hard to reach in office hours. He was a funny, happy, old man, but I wouldn't take again if given the option.
This semester I took his class alongside 4 other courses two of them 300 level (18 credit hours). I received a D in his class and all A's in my other four. That being said I do not recommend taking his introductory course or any of his other courses. He does not teach during class so if you have a heavy class load like I did and don't have time to
Very picky grader. Took him for PSYC 2010 online. Just put as much info as possible on every question.
One of the worst professors that I have ever had. His power points do not match up with his lectures and he doesn't get through all the material on the tests. His class is all around boring, infuriating, and confusing
DO NOT TAKE He moves so slow, never finishes chapters and makes you read/finish the chapters yourself for the test. you have to teach yourself the chapters and study guides are like 20 pages long. SO MUCH MATERIAL he expects you to know for the test-very confusing, best way to study is read before classes. he's funny but this was my worst grade.
All tests, nothing else. No extra credit. Doesn't cover test material in class and then asks questions that are not in readings (textbook) or covered in class.
Dr. Brainerd is a jolly old man on the surface, but I would not recommend taking him unless you enjoy reading and are up to a challenge. He asks questions on test that he only talks about in class, so it is recommended that you attend. He likes to joke around and only gets through like 2-5 slides of his powerpoint in class. It is not an easy A.
He goes off on tangents. He asks questions that are not in the book and asks you to extrapolate the text. He does not even go through the whole lectures covered on the test. You HAVE to go to class or he will lower your grade. He is slow, constantly late, and talks a lot to the point that it is annoying. I did not even take notes in class.
Heres a breakdown of this class: You won't learn anything from his daily lectures he mostly just rambles and tells stories lol I used it as a study hall. You have to teach yourself on your own time by reading the book and filling out the knowledge checklist as you go along. You learn a lot by filling it out on your own. Seriously
Brainerd is a super nice professor, wants to see you succeed. You WILL need to read the book, his presentations in class don't cover everything and he usually goes off on tangents.
There are opportunities for extra points, but they aren't going to make a big difference. This professor is literally always late, and he spends so much time telling stupid stories you won't learn anything from him. I taught myself all the material and hated going to class because he is crude, loud, obnoxious, and socially awkward. Terrible.
The power-points online only give you 50% of information. Make sure you write down things he talks about in class over 50% of test info is on in class material. This professor does ramble a little, but they are IMPORTANT! This professor is accessible outside of class and willing to help you. DO NOT SKIP! your overall grade will be docked.
Dr. Brainerd is probably the best professor I have had at Clemson. The material for this class can be hard, because of all the important figures and theories. However, Dr. Brainerd explains it well. Not everything gets covered in class, but the book goes along with lecture, so read it. He also gives you the option to take an extra credit test.
Dr. Brainerd lectures every class, only sometimes about the lesson. He does not get through all the material he tests on. He often spends class time showing up late, giving reminders, or offering impromptu reenactments of his past in an attempt to entertain the class. Some of his jokes and comments may come across as "out-dated," to say the least.
If you love yourself, do not take a class from him. He's all nice and friendly when he lectures, but he is extremely rude and tough when it comes to grading. The lectures don't even give you the information you need, so you're left to read the textbook and you're pretty much screwed. And there's only four essay tests and a project, that's it.
He is a nice guy. Lectures are all over the place, I went to class and never payed attention. You MUST read the book though. Read the chapters, do the study guides, and you'll be fine. I made a B, and put in average effort. Read chapters, and filled out study guides.
Dr. Brainerd is a nice man, but he does not teach. I'm having to sit in the library right now teaching myself chapter 1 - 5 because he spends the whole class period talking about everything but psychology. For example, he talked about his sign in sheet for attendance for 45 minutes, and apes for the last 30. Do yourself a favor and don't have him.
Rambles more than any man I have ever met in my life. He's funny, but good Lord, He didn't cover a chapter and a half for the first test. Our class is starts 30 mins after it is scheduled regularly. Be ready to teach yourself.
Brainerd is a very funny guy, but he spends an hour making up hypothetical examples and very very little time talking about important things. You will never get through all of the chapters that are on the tests because he rambles so much, so it is imperative that you read and do the study guide. If you only study lecture notes, you will fail.
The best thing about this guy is that his voice sounds like it belongs to a nice cartoon character. He rarely finishes a sentence because he moves from tangent to tangent for the whole 75 minute class. Does not use email, insists that you call him on his home phone if you need help. Test questions are much harder than "Knowledge Checklist".
Enjoys talking about sex, probably lacks that in his life. When talking about Freud he talked about preventing a childs masturbation tendencies. Mentioned how they might sexually repress thoughts as they might tell their partner to tie me down daddy ( his words not mine) ummm yea, dont remember anything Ive learned in the class but I do laugh
He does provide helpful comprehensive study guides for tests. Very boring mandatory lectures. Often goes off on tangents and makes it very confusing as to what is course material and what is not. Read the textbook and you'll do decent. Keeps lecturing past the end of class everyday. Even if students begin leaving after time is up, he'll continue.
Dr. Brainerd is a hilarious teacher, but if you are looking to learn everything is class it's not going to happen. You will have to spend a lot of time in the book in order to learn the material. He talks so much about one topic that you will rarely ever cover any material. He does give knowledge check guides but they aren't that helpful.
Don't take Dr. Brainerd. He seems nice, but he does NOT teach. You must teach yourself. The majority of class is him giving long examples of situations that he finds hilarious. He never responds to emails. He made a mistake with attendance sheets and told me I'd have to go through every sheet to find MY mistake because HE doesn't make mistakes.
He spends the majority of class giving long anecdotes and repeating a few main points, and leaves about 70% of the material on exams completely untouched in lecture. He gives a nice extra credit test that helps and usually a decent curve on exams. He shouldn't require attendance, you don't get anything from it anyways.
Brainerd is hilarious and a good guy. Attendance to his lectures helps if you have a grade that is a 79.0 or an 89.0 because he says that he will move it up if you attend class. Unfortunately, the lectures cover minimal information and you end up teaching yourself most of it before the exams, but the info is common sense. Textbook use is a MUST.
He is a great guy and very funny. You must attend class, though he does not cover most of the topics on the test. As long as you read the chapters and look at the knowledge checklist that he gives, you should be fine. He gives generous extra credit on tests and even gives an extra credit test.
Does not teach at all and expects you to know a lot on the tests. His lectures consist of him talking non sense the whole time. There's no need to ever show up coming from someone that was always there and didn't learn a thing from him. Does give one extra credit test that helps but take any other teacher for psych.
Worse professor I've ever had. He spends his lectures rambling about stuff that won't be on the test. His study guides are basically useless; they're AT LEAST 8 pages with 75% of the material not showing up on the test. Expects you to teach yourself anything he doesn't have time to cover (which is a lot). Take literally any other teacher.
Dr. Brainerd spent the majority of class talking about things that were not relevant. He covered 1 out of the 3 chapters that we were tested on, so you basically have to teach yourself. Would not recommend taking him
Just flat out not a good teacher. I did very well in the class but did not enjoy it at all. He rambles for so long that you will want to switch majors. Learn meager amounts of psychology and instead learn about random anecdotes in his life that you will never need. Read the textbook and you'll be ok but this class could be much more interesting.
Dr. Brainerd definitely loves psychology, yet he does not know how to teach it very well. He is often distracted and goes off on tangents, sometimes for the entire period. This class can easily be passed if you fill out his knowledge checklist and read the textbook. Lectures are pretty irrelevant and often off topic. Does give an extra credit test.
Brainerd is a nice man who loves the subject he teaches, he's just not good at teaching. He goes off-topic constantly. He talks about how we won't have time to cover everything in class yet my other classes have way more on their exams and yet we somehow manage (GASP). The reason we don't get to everything is b/c he's a bad teacher.
If you want to actually learn dont take this class. He does not teach! He will barely cover one chapter out of about 4 on each test. He gives extra credit luckily because you will need it. Lots of textbook reading and the chapters are long! Goes very off topic on unrelated stuff.
There's a reason the first thing that comes up when you google Brainerd is his rate my professor prof. It's as bad as they say. He's a nice guy, but he has no idea what he's talking about. Lectures do not correspond with test material at all. Just read the book page by page and you might get a 70 on the test. he takes off points for absences too!!
While Dr. Brainerd is a nice guy, he is not a good teacher at all. Instead of teaching the material that will appear on the test, he spends half the class on one slide telling stories that he finds funny that have little relevance. If you are going to do well in this class you MUST read the textbook deeply. If not there is no chance for success.
Dr. Brainerd is passionate about psychology. There's no denying that. It's just that class feels like a self-taught class given that you're expected to know all the material on the knowledge checklist whether he gets to it or not. Honestly, I used the class as a study period to write notes for all my class. He's a good man. he goes on tangent often
Dr. Brainerd is quirky and he likes to talk about his ex wife which is quite entertaining. He loves what he teaches and is caring, but be prepared to only have a few grades. One test brought me from an A to a B so make sure you study up and don't mess up on any of the tests.
He is very knowledgable on the history of psychology and is a good professor IMO. Write down everything he says during class (which is easy to do - he gives you time to write & is easy to listen to) and you will be fine. Study the "buzz words" he mentions in class. Reading the book helps too but I've done fine using notes and knowledge checklists.
The only grade in this class is tests. He does give an extra credit test and curve some tests based off of the average class score. HIs lectures are very wordy and long, but if you read the textbook (!!!!) and follow the study checklist, easy A.
You can tell that Dr. Brainerd is a nice guy, but his lectures are very scattered and drawn out. He doesn't respond to emails so getting in contact with him is difficult. Study and memorize the knowledge checklists. It's a ton of info to remember and you must know every detail about each psychologist/theories to do decently well on exams.
I have Dr. Brainerd during Covid-19, so it's all online and on zoom, but from my experience he is not a very good teacher. His lectures at the beginning are pointless, so a lot of people think that all of them will be that way and don't watch them for the rest of the year which hurts them. Reading the book is needed to do well, and it takes TIME.
He's such a nice guy and he tells hilarious stories in class, however be prepared to do a lot of the learning on your own. Do the knowledge checklists and read the textbook for sure. The only grades are the 4 exams so it's imperative that you do well on them. He's a really nice and I feel bad, just not the best prof.
Brainerd is not the worst prof ever, he just doesn't teach much. You will NOT pass any exam if you do not own the textbook or find an online link. Your grade is determined by how well you do on the 4 exams there are in the class and that is it. If you just study and learn the knowledge checklist you should be fine, exams are pretty straight forward
If you're looking for a gen ed, don't take this one. His lectures are just story times that consist of maybe 5 minutes of actual material. He does not know how to answer emails. You only get around 5 grades in the semester and they are all tests. If you want to get a good grade, you have to read the whole textbook.
the only grades in the class are tests which he does give a so called study guide for but its pointless because its basically just the entire book chapter anyway. Also, I stopped going to lecture after the first week because he just tells pointless stories.
Hes a nice guy, but an awful teacher. Hes basically impossible to get in touch with by email or phone, and since he wasnt in his office due to Covid, there was no way to reach him. The class material is relatively simple, what was confusing was knowing what would be on the test. And dont expect to be taught during lectures, he just rambles.
Tries harder to be funny than to actually get through lecture notes.
Literally, just no. Do not take Brainerd... for any class. He talks about the most random and pointless stuff during class, then expects us to know SO much information for LOCKDOWN RESPONDUS exams. Only grades in this class come from exams. Don't do it.
Brainerd doesn't require attendance and as the class was online, Zoom lectures were recorded and posted. To be honest, if you just read the book and follow the knowledge checklists for each test, you will do very well regardless of if you watch the lectures. I wouldn't say he's a great teacher, but the class itself is very passable.
Funny guy. I took his class back in the day, maybe 2017. Would go off topic quite often but would keep me focused and entertained. It's a shame he killed his wife and himself
