Yes, he does mainly teach theory, but if you take the time to see him after class or in his office hours, he doesn't mind helping with problems. I have had to ask fairly simple questions and he had no problem going over it to with me. It seems the people here giving these horror stories are reluctant to learn, and want to be spoon fed the material.
His notes are a bit confusing and do not make much sense even when he try to explain them. I would recommend taking bott or geanangel
His lectures are not very clear or helpful when it comes to the test. I would recomend printing the practice tests and going over them with a tutor or the chem help desk. It is possible to get a good grade, he just dosnt teach the material in a manner that is easy to apply.I wouldnt say to not take his class, just really study and get help.
He is actually a really good guy. The only people who possibly cause him to be a "mean" teacher are those who don't pay attention or flat out leave class in front of him. If you pay attention, you are guaranteed at least a B. Homework isn't that hard and the tests are basically the homework problems. He is a good guy so you should give him a chance
This is one of the most helpful guys I ever met, but he expects you to work hard (and you won't do well unless you do). Just like in real life.
Everyone says how much they don't think he's a good teacher, but he is. He reads of the slides, and then shows examples, ALWAYS. If you do the work, you pass. He is really helpful, and always wants people to go to office hours. Blackboard homework assignments each week, tests at CASA. Just make sure you study/practice problems. He's not a bad guy.
He's a pretty good teacher. Pay attention, show up, take notes, do the homework problems he tells you to do. It's not hard but people who think he's bad do not want to invest time into this class. Work and you will get an A. Go with him, he's good
Class itself isn't that hard. It's pretty easy and boring. But he doesn't make the tests, all chem 1331 students take the same tests and tests are at CASA. So you have to spend a lot of time teaching yourself the material, which is not impossible. The tests are exactly like the homework. Do the homework and the practice tests and you'll be fine.
Not helpful at all. Just reads off powerpoints and works fairly irrelevant problems. He likes to go on tangents about how much he hates teaching intro classes and thinks you're all lazy students.
He is a nice guy, but he does not explain the material very well. Sometimes he forgets, I guess, to let you know of formulas that are on the test. Be prepared to do alot of outside research for the material (including google, youtube, and other professors lectures online). Dont miss class becuase he gives bonus points at the end of the semester.
Well you get 2 bonus points at MOST for attendance, that really did help me alot so i'm grateful for that. He isn't really good as a professor, his notes are very details don't get me wrong, but the way he presented is really hard to understand. Yahoo answer was more of a teacher to me during that semester.
Tests are all the same for all chem classes. Do practice hws/tests to prepare. Stopped going to his class second week. Went to Geanangel. Took attendance towards end of semester for 2 points on avg. Had to teach myself. Got an A-. Curves down. No online slides. But fairly understanding if you talk to him during office hours.
Not helpful at all. His test questions are randomly generated, so you could wind up with the hardest ones. When half the class fails that means the teacher is not doing a good job teaching.
Can't teach,not interesting...don't take him
He never goes over examples. He will continuously derive equations through calculus and expect you to know how to apply it to word problems. Any question, he tells you to find out yourself by reading. I have never encountered such a horrible teacher. If a teacher must curve grades to where a 50 is a C then that's sad.
Just took this professor Spring 2013 and had to drop with a "W" because I kept having to teach MYSELF and thought I could do it. He doesn't explain anything WELL and he doesn't go over test problems properly. He was not meant to be a professor--he confuses himself & YOU in the process. Don't take him unless you already know your Chemistry.
People complain that he doesn't work out many problems, but I think that's a good thing. He focuses on theory, which is what we need to know thoroughly to get through the difficult problems. He makes chemistry interesting and gives a lot of insight on science in general. Go to lectures, learn the theory, work out problems on your on time.
SUCH an awful class. His lectures are summaries of the book, so know a good amount of chemistry before taking his class. Pro tip: He has 3 random quizzes, be there in class on those days because he bases his curves on them. SELF STUDY IS THE KEY!!! Bring something else to do in lecture to not waste time...
Unhelpful, disrespectful, rude, uncommunicative. Only gave 7 days notice for a mandatory assessment test that is due by the 2nd day of class; forced drop if missed. Was forced to drop the class because he would not, for any reason, make an exception for concurrent enrollment in the prerequisite class. Doesn't respond to email. AVOID like a plague.
This guy is horrible. If you want to learn it on your own...take him. He talks to you like you're in elementary school "does everybody see that?" And "here we go" he doesnt explain anything. He does all of his lecture through power points based off the text. He says attendance is mandatory but he doesn't care. Class avg exam 1 was a 12/20.
He only teaches theories.. no example problems...He's really boring... Don't take him, take Geanangel. The only way to get a high grade is to skip his class and study yourself
I'm sophomore and he was the best professor I ever had at UH. Pay attention in class, take notes, work every practice test and make every homework attempt and you will be GOLDEN. Easy A** A.
I would not recommend this class. My grade and understanding improved when I stopped attending. He's boring and confusing. I started reading the textbook, doing practice problems, and watching other lecture videos and I'm still having a hard time. Tests/homework aren't particularly hard but they're all online so there's no partial credit.
Everyone that said he was a good teacher is on crack. This is a class to try to get kids to change their major for engineering so its really difficult. Less than half the kids that started in the class finished in it.
The online homework he assigns has about 1/10 problems wrong. When I asked him to do something about it, he removed HIS wrong answer without fixing MY grade. Gave incorrect information in class. Tests have nothing to do with anything else. Stopped going to class after test 2, still got a higher grade on test 3 (hard) than test 1 (basics).
RUN!!!
Rude. Inconsiderate. Not understanding. Uncaring. The only reason why he hasn't been fired is because he's tenured. Avoid him as much as possible.
I can't think of one, single thing that I like about this professor. Not his lectures, not his methods, not his attitude.
Just don't. Do yourself a favor and take literally any other teacher.
He's without a doubt one of the worst professors at UH. He's condescending towards students and boasts about how many students fail his class. He's the kind of prof who blames his students for his inability to teach. He wont post anything online and sucks at answering questions. And he sounds like Speedy Gonzales when he talks. Avoid like 3rd ward
Worst professor in UofH. Exams are hard, his lectures are useless. He doesn't care about the students in his class. Do not take this class!
This guy is a clown. Dont take his class. He doesnt care about students and just goes through material like everyone is a chemistry major.
Took attendance on the last three days. Test are impossible to pass. Lecture is useless just read the book and search for PowerPoint online. Doesnt care if you pass or fail. Nor you can you understand him. He is one of the worst professors arE UH. AVOID HIM, TAKE THE CLASS OVER THE SUMMER IF THE OTHER PROFESSOR IS FULL. ITS A HARD GPA KILL.
Horrible teacher, do not take unless you want to be self taught. He teaches based off "Fundamental Theories" of chemistry while the tests are mostly written by Professor Simon Bott who does majority mathematics. I'd suggest taking summer school Chemistry 2 and cover in the course of 3 weeks then take him for a teacher. Take my advice. Save your GPA
I didn't like his personality. when people start packing before he finishes talking, he gets mad. Lectures are okay and when you ask a question during his lectures he answers totally different answer from what you asked. Tests are same as other professors. Attendance as bonus points so you MUST attend his class (randomly takes attendance) no curves
He jumps between a lot of topics and say's "Very Good" a lot.
He pretty much just reads off the slides, which you cannot access for studying, so good notes are pretty vital. You have to either have an innate knowledge of chemistry or do a lot of work outside of the class i.e. practice problems, textbook reading, tutoring. If you struggled with chemistry in high school take anyone else.
His lectures make no sense to me. At all. I survived on the textbook and khan academy. Study group is a must if you hope to survive this course.
I never benefited from his lectures and only showed up in case he took attendance. Study groups, tutors, and khan academy are lifelines for this course. Be sure to do the practice problems and at least attempt the HW assigned. Labs for this course fill up quickly so hurry and get them while you can. Get used to hearing "Veeeery Good."
Must work for the grade. Weekly hw and 3 exams & final through Casa. The way he teaches is geared to people who were good at chem so lectures were useless to me. Do the practice problems and ALL the practice exams, these are very similar to tests. He says get the newest book, but, the older edition is fine. Hard class, not impossible.
His lectures are useless. The textbook is written by the Chem department, so it's not helpful at all. I'm an A+ student and I'm dying in this class. He is confusing, rude, condensing, and DOES NOT CARE if you're failing. Absolutely horrible. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF. Calling him a professor is a joke. I would never recommend this class.
He tends to belittle the students unintentionally. He is also unapproachable to students, which is necessary if a student needs help. His PowerPoints had a lot of grammatical errors and when he did practice problems, he didn't explain them clearly enough, at least for me. He says attendance is mandatory, but he never actually took attendance.
He's a knowledgeable professor, but he lacks the patience and motivation to teach the course.
GO TO CLASS, take notes, dounderstand the homework, & study for the tests. If you miss class, which you will because attendance isn't mandatory, you'll be lost. He doesn't post lectures, or example problems worked out. Book little help. Explanations to some problems can't even be found on the internet. Many of the test q's are not MC. No curve.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! This is the worst professor at UH! He talks in circles, his lectures don't make sense, he isn't understanding at ALL, tests are difficult, and he offers ONE extra credit quiz, which may or may not be given on Thanksgiving day. He is a terrible professor. I dropped after he wouldn't let me retake a test after my grandma died.
Carrasquillo expects students to read the material and participate in class. He teaches concepts in class, where the tests and final are mostly calculations. Takes attendance the last 2 classes. He does not curve. Bott makes the tests, so it is better to take with him.
You're on your own for tests, show up for the chance at extra credit. Pretty funny guy. Would rather watch paint dry then sit through his lecture ever again. Better bring something to do during class or you'll be super bored. You get the grade you earn, don't expect to not study and get an AB.
Like he says attendance is mandatory, but it is not. I did get an A in the class, but that is because of Khan Academy , youtube, tutoring, and butt-hard self studying. I attended every single class and took notes, but I never studied from the notes. He knows the material, but unless you're already good, he doesn't give enough examples.
This one is for the Biology majors trying to get that chemistry minor. Do your best to take another teacher because this guy will make your semester miserable. If you do take him, my advice would be to take down his notes and get a tutor to break it down and simplify them. Trust me, his notes are very dense with too much information.
veeeery goooood! Excellent!
He is very full of himself, and acts like he is better. Also i have no idea what in the world he is saying
This class has made me hate chem. He does not teach what you need to know for the tests you will need to teach yourself everything. He is not helpful when he "reviews" topics. He goes way too fast for anyone to get anything out of the review and unless you already know what you are doing you will only be more confused. Take someone else.
He's a good teacher, IF you come to class, make sure you take notes, and do the homework online. He gives you review problems of chapters too. If you do the reviews he gives you, as well as pay attention and do the others things, you'll be fine.
Edwin knows his stuff but doesn't know what to teach you. In class he will teach you mostly math when on the actual test there are concepts. There might be some math but more than 75% of the questions are conceptualized. Gives a pop quiz in class that is 2 points added to your overall grade give that you get both the questions right. Hard class.
Took him thinking he was my best option, but was very wrong. He may know the subject if chemistry well himself, but when it comes to teaching, he's probably the worst I've seen. Tests are hard and don't match up with the class. If you learn lots of math in class, tests are more concept. Vice versa. Do not take him. VERRRYYYYYY GOOOODDDDD EXCELENTTT
Don't like blaming others for my problems and don't like talking negatively, so when I suggest you avoid him, I mean well. Realizing that students don't show up to his class, he stopped posting lecture notes years ago (His words). The lecture itself is unclear, the grading system without mercy. To be fair, the entire chem depart. is garbage
He doesnt explain
You can tell Dr. Carrasquillo knows his stuff when it comes to chemistry, but that's about it. His teaching skills are lacking. I sat in the front row, attended every class, paid attention, and studied frequently. I ended up having to drop because my grade was no where near where I wanted it to be. He also had a habit of being rude to students.
His tests are incredibly hard, nothing like his reviews or his lecture. Doesn't put any other resources up for students, and is honestly quite rude to students. He does know his chemistry, just not a very good teacher.
Take Carrasquillo if you want to prepare your self for college in the coming years. I attend every class but my primary study technique is practice. I attend class to be exposed to the material, and with friends I apply that knowledge to the practice HW. JUST PRACTICE AND YOU'LL BE FINE. 3 tests 20% each. 6% HW. Final 34%. It's not bad at all!
I wish i could give him all 0's bc thats what this guy is, A 0!!! AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COST
SELF TAUGHT If you're doing chemistry 1 do not take him. He's lectures barely go over the actual test which is usually all calculations. You have to put in a lot of work. He gives pop quizzes once in a blue moon. Make sure you bring other work to do because the lectures are so boring. I would not ever take him again. VERRYYY GOOD
He gives lectures through PowerPoint. there is weekly hw due. There are 3 tests and a final mostly based on practice tests and homework. He expects people to be on time and hates it when they leave early. There are random attendance checks. His lectures are clear but he expects you to know certain stuff.
DO NOT TAKE. UH need to fire this man, this guy makes the test and as a review he will give you at least 200 question, and about 10 at most from those question will be on the 20 question test. He does not post his lecture online but to me his lecture is usless.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! I usually do very well in Chemistry, but his class made it impossible for me to succeed/enjoy Chemistry at all anymore. Tests are never relevant to what you learn in lecture, they're pointless. I had to drop this class after the 2nd test and when I went to him to see if I had any final options, he told me to change my major.
3 test 1 final, tries making lectures fun, sharing his exp., introduce topics and stop at times, ask class if understand, but mainly depended on self-study, refer to book, and paid tutor. Create/Join a group and share practice examples. At this point, survive together. 2 things, concepts and calculations. Know both. If take,I wish VERY GOOD luck.
Okay it's not impossible. With hard work and commitment, a progressive study group, and the textbook, you can get a really good grade. ALSO YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS!! HE gave 5 points extra credit towards our final grade for attendance at the end of the semester.
Get in groups and practice! He gives you practice exams for each midterm. Take those and learn how to solve each question. I had an A- and he added 5 points (2 for attendance and 3 curve). You'll be fine! He's always helpful and there if you need him. I always went to him after class and he cleared things up always! Love him! VERY GOOD!!!
Edwin might as well teach this as an online course, his lectures are irrelevant/ nonessential to doing the hw, passing the quizzes or the tests. This class seems like it was structured to be self study and he belittles students more then he should, emailed him twice and i never got a response. 3tests x 20%, final 34% , weekly hw 6%
He is quite boring and it's hard to get much out of lectures. This is a stereotypical weed-out class, so your best bet of doing well on exams is just reading the textbook. He isn't very interested in how students do in the course, nor is he sympathetic to students that want to do better in the class. The class isn't designed for kids to succeed.
Extremely impersonal. Will not even try to help you if you are lost. His lectures are very confusion and are based on the assumption that you already know the material. Try to get another professor if you can.
Best chem 1 teacher at UH and that isn't saying much. Take him, the other teachers are worse. Expect not to understand much in lecture. Get together with your friends and study the sections that he covers in class in your book. Also remember, google is your friend.
His lectures are nothing like the test. if you want to pass the class with decent grade use the book and learn. Also do alot of practice questions and your practice test. he also gives pop quizzes randomly for extra credit so attend class everyday. also when he says times up for the pop quiz pass your quiz or he wont accept them even if you did it.
Very nice guy out of class but not the best at teaching. Moves through chapters and material without many examples. Tests are nothing like lecture. I would look for another professor if possible.
Because I had some friends go through this, I would like to make sure that people who want to go be in engineering but didn't get accepted know: You need a B average in your science classes to get into engineering, so you better study for this class if you aren't already good at chemistry! I was lucky because I was already in, but not all are.
He did an okay job of explaining the concepts, but he's not an enthusiastic lecturer and tends to be condescending. Reviewing your lecture notes is not adequate preparation for a test. You really need to read to the textbook and do as many practice problems as you can. This class is difficult, but if you have a strong work ethic, you'll be fine.
He's condescending, but I like him as a teacher. He does a pretty well job at giving you the basic concepts. If I didn't understand him, I read the book. Use all attempts on homework and practice as much as you can. His class should be fine as long as you put in the effort. He gives at least 2 pop quizzes throughout the semester for bonus points.
He really isn't a good lecturer. He has that curved grading scale which is great. Read the TB! Tests tend to be hard since the way he teaches is ineffective.
You better study the text book because he doesn't explain too well. But honestly from what I heard about the other professors I was glad I took him for Chem 1331. Tests are hard yes, so you need to study everything and anything you can find. Not impossible to get an A (not A-) There is a standard curve given but also more extra credit via 2 quizzes
This professor is not helpful at all. He does not provide the same resources as other professors do to help their kids learn the material. Taking him puts you at a serious disadvantage. I asked him for help, he called me lazy and a failure. Avoid if you can, but if you can't, get help elsewhere and study by yourself. It'll be hard, but possible.
Not a big fan of his teaching style or class. All around nice guy, but is very confusing in his lectures and generally expects his students to somehow know everything. I started off attending his lectures, but soon opted to go to tutoring instead of his class. I found that the best way to do well in this class to self-teach myself. Tests are hard!!
VERY GOOD
He is the worst professor to take at UofH. If you can avoid and take it at community college then I would suggest you to do so. He's not understanding at all whatsoever and basically tells you that you're screwed the first day of class. Miss professor Bott so much!!! Don't take him please and save your GPA
You'll have to read Atkins and Tinoco. Don't bother emailing him/going to OH; you'll just get laughed at. He's got this power issue where he likes hearing students fail. It's possible to get an A, but there's better professors. Two midterms and a final with some homework. All tests are around 10-13 questions. Seriously, just put the class off a sem
It's the first week of classes and I dropped this course after the second lecture. Prof seems too cocky, hopefully not because he just became the new chem head. (Bott's gone _) When you ask questions and he thinks it's stupid he laughs and says oh c'mon. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
His lectures don't cover everything for his tests. You will have to study by yourself and read huge textbook. Homework iskind of easy but it's just small part of total grade.
Horrible professor! Doesn't teach very well and doesn't help at all.
Dont understand all the hate, he is VERY GOOD
He spends class time complaining about people leaving early and ends up going over. He's kind of a jerk in lecture and is pretty cocky at times. Not approachable at all. He doesn't do practice problems in class, so be prepared to get a tutor or learn on your own. Avoid if possible, take with someone else.
He recently took away the only saving grace of the class: the practice tests. He replaced practice tests (which had extremely similar questions to the actual test, which is apparently grounds for "abuse" by students) with 40-80 question reviews for each topic covered in class. He expects you to spend 8 hours a week doing hw AND do these too. Awful.
Don't take this professor. He doesn't care about you at all and he's a huge jerk about academic accommodations. His lectures make no sense and he got rid of the practice test too which was the best way to study.
Worst teacher I've had yet. Lecture is unclear and scattered with few real examples. Professor is quite pleased with himself and demeans students for a number of reasons (including coming late or leaving early with a class 500). If you choose him be prepared to teach yourself and if you're stuck with him, good luck.
Overall great Professor, very easy class. In order to do well in his test, do the online homework (12 questions per week) and the practice test (which he decided not to remove after all ). Practice test is very similar to the actual test and he will not throw in heavy knowledge questions, only very simple and straightforward questions. 90-100 A
He lecturers mostly from his slides, no uploaded lectures on BB. He always has problems with his microphone and sometimes lecturers without it lol.. Grading mostly depends on exams that are kind of easy if you prepare a lot but you will have to prepare a lot if you're weak at Chem. Textbook really helps to understand material much better than lectr
He probably is a nice person but overall I did not like his class. His lectures were over powerpoints and did not like how he would not post them on blackboard. Mostly ended up self studying for this class.
He's not the best at teaching chemistry but then again chemistry is not easy to teach. He reads his powerpoints and gets upset if you leave class early. Seems like he doesn't care about students. I took a SEP workshop with this class and it HELPED A LOT! TAKE A WORKSHOP! HW is 12 questions & 4 attempts. 2 pop quizzes. 3 exams & 1 final. Good Luck!!
TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR
He doesn't want his students to pass.
Awful professor, I literally went to one of his lectures this semester and couldn't stand his bad teaching style so I never went to another lecture again. He even removed practice tests even though he barely does example problems in class. I still am managing to stay in the high B-low A range because I used other professors lectures so good luck.
Do not take this man for chemistry. He says attendance is "mandatory" and counts it only by giving out completely random quizzes throughout the semester. That is the only reasons I've gone to lectures. I basically taught myself chemistry with the textbook. Hard material and he's no help. Difficulty of test is a complete toss up. not "VERY GOOD"
Carrasquillo is horrible at teaching chemistry. The lectures are a complete waste of time. Take Bott instead if he is available. The only reason I was able to do well in this class was because of access to Bott's videos.
Horrible professor. Wastes time in class ranting about how horrible teaching a freshman class is like he's doing us a huge favor by teaching the class. Unapproachable, lectures are all over the place, has an aggravated tone when answering students questions during lecture.
Best Professor I ever had in my life. Easy A guys
Do yourself a favor and take someone else for 1331 or 1332 if you can. He's the type of professor that says "if you're two minutes late, don't bother coming at all". His lectures didn't help much, so I had to find my own resources online and old videos from a friend in order to teach myself. You can make an A/B, but it's harder than it should be.
Extremely boring, lecture doesn't really matter, everything you learn is self taught.
This man has been one of the worst professors I've taken at UH. Not only his teaching skills are poor, but also discourages students so bad. Pretty much his lectures include rants, stories, and him pulling up his pants a lot. If you want to make the world a favor, do not take him for chem. If you have to take him, use other resources to study.
He honestly wasn't TOO terrible. He makes you write everything down, and that's how I learn best. My biggest complaint would be that he does not care about his students. He also hates it when ppl leave early and will start to rant for 10 mins about how they're probably failing the class which wastes the time of the students who're still tryna learn
Not as bad as people say, just show up to lecture and do the practice exams he gives(very similar to the actual exam.)
Prof. Carrasquillo was okay, not awful but you'll pass. Only took him because only 1 available. Rants about people leaving class early and how they won't succeed in life like that. Says "Very GOOD" & "Everybody see that"a lot during lecture. Just do practice exams and all hw attempts to make you understand whats going on, and you'll pass for sure.
This guy is as bad as everyone says he is. The lectures are horrible and you will only learn half of what you need to learn from them, the rest will come from the book or online. Only reason I went to lecture was for the measly two bonus points he adds at the end of the year to your average. Every question on a test is a point of your average.
Mediocre teacher, not as horrible as made out to be. However, majority of material will have to be self taught. Homework, textbook, and practice tests (if he gives any), will help a ton. Lectures don't really help unless you know material before going in. Manageable A if you put work into class.
By far the hardest course I have taken at UH. Lectures were very confusing to follow and felt fairly discouraging. I ended up using a lot of outside material to try and teach myself. Class was composed of only tests and homework so obviously if you do well on them then you're fine but if not then there isn't much room to improve your grade.
Attendance is important. The professor gave I think around 3 pop quizes, and during his lectures he might tell you to refer to something in the book. I liked how he sometimes gives us a problem to attempt before showing us the answer. His lectures can get boring despite an honest attempt, and he brings some really tricky test questions.
He doesn't give out notes for dumb reasons, makes students write it down from the slides so we got no time to actually pay attention to the lecture which really matters (and his lecture is not even good). And the final grade is 94% made out of test grades, no chance of redemption if you ever make a mistake.
Contrary to the popular opinion, his lectures are actually very helpful, he covers everything you need to know in the exams, although not very cooperative with office hours at times, questions are welcomed during lectures. Just put in the effort to take good notes and make use of the text book and you should be good. Expect weekly homework
His class is informative as compared to other chemistry lectures. You actually learn something when you're in his class. He is not good when it comes to answering questions in class or outside. If you depend on his class notes you will not pass the tests. You have to read the book and do plenty self study in order to get a good grade in the class.
He is a mediocre professor who is a little rude but the class is not difficult if you do the practice homework.
Please read the book and do the practice homework to prepare for exams because there are questions you have not seen. His lectures are okay, sometimes very helpful and sometimes very confusing. The grading scale is crazy but so are all of the science classes. If you don't have to take him, CHOOSE SOMEONE ELSE. Be ready to self teach all semester.
Carrasquillo is a mediocre lecturer and it takes a lot of work outside class to ace the course. I already had a good grasp of the material from AP chem but still had to study the book and practice questions intensely outside of class in order to succeed. The grading policy is extremely difficult, but you can ace the class if you work hard.
I had to get a tutor and he would not accept my academic accommodations because he was under the impression that I needed to being him more paperwork for some reason, which was not the case. Lots of random rants in the middle of the lecture, and god forbid you have to leave early or use the restroom. Take with literally anyone else.
He lectures by reading off of his Powerpoint presentations. It is easy to zone out while he is lecturing and he does not provide many examples of practice problems. You will have to self-teach yourself on many units if you want to be successful in his class. He provides some extra-credit with 2-3 pop quizzes. Says "Alright, very good" often.
He spends a lot time over concepts and doesn't do many practice problems. I found that reading the text wasn't helpful as it is very vague. There are pop quizzes so go to class. He expects you to understand material immediately after covering it which if you have a background in chem is great but for those who struggle in chem it's frustrating.
Terrible teacher. He jumps from subject to subject and is unclear about what he is teaching sometimes. Rarely works examples and when he does you can't tell what he's writing. Grade is basically all the tests (20% for three exams, 34% final) but its like that for all chem classes. He took attendance twice and that got me 2 bonus points.
People like to whine a lot, but he provides most of the resources necessary to be successful. Complete the homework on-time, using ALL attempts to better yourself. Practice tests are just like the exams so there is no reason to flop. 3 random "pop quizzes" throughout semester that give you +3 points towards final course grade.
Carrasquillo spends most of his lecture doing a few things: 1) Messing with the mic 2) Telling students who leave early or show up late that they're failures 3) Proclaiming VEEEERRY GOOD I pretty much taught the course to myself using the textbook, the homework, and the practice tests. He does give out a couple bonus points if you show up to class
He isn't the best lecturer. At least once a class he would interrupt the lecture to shame a student who was leaving class. If you are one of those students that learn everything outside of class, take him. Beware though, that his extra credit in class quizzes boosted our grade by 6 points though. DO HIS HOMEWORK PACKETS THAT ARE OPTIONAL.
Very boring, will get very angry if you leave the class and has taken some students' poppers for leaving before time. Refuses to post notes he did not cover in class so students who did not show up to class don't get the material. Tests look more like practice exams and his lectures as well as the book are not helpful. Practice lots of problems!!!
Yeesh. This guy. I did not like him. He taught me nothing. I had to use homework and practice quizzes for learning. Textbook is irrelevant, don't buy it unless u want to learn something I guess. He gives EC (2 or 3 grade avg points) if u show up at random times. Tests were aight if u study the quizzes. For hw, u could just search it up.
His lectures really won't teach you much, best way to get your education is try to understand as much as you can from the notes he gives and go over them while reading the textbook. He lets classes out late and stops teaching while a very few number of students leave the auditorium.
he is the WORST professor I've ever had in my life. he is not helpful at all and goes over concepts instead of practice problems. he also does not post lectures online so that people who dont come cant access it and he yells at you if he sees you taking pics of the ppt. goes off topic alot about how we will all be failures
Edwin carrasquillo is the bane of my existence. I took ap chemistry in high school and loved it so I thought signing up for a more advanced intro chem class would not be difficult at all. I was so wrong. He says lecture attendance is mandatory but its really not. do the practice exams and practice homeworks. watch Thomas teet's youtube videos!!!!!
Professor Carasquillo is every first semester college student's worst nightmare. Most of what you thought you knew in high school is irrelevant. You will have to teach yourself everything in this class as his lectures are very bland, superfluous, and don't match what you're tested on. Do a lot of practice and try to find outside tutoring and videos
Show up to class and do the practice problems, you will pass.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM. TAKE HIS CLASS. EASY A IF YOU READ THE TEXTBOOK
VEERRYYY GOODDD. Class is based off of PPT's. Showing up doesn't hurt; if anything, it helps because he goes over similar problems (maybe 3 or 4) that you will see on the exam. Does a good job preparing you for the HW Quizzes, but not so much the tests. If you practice enough, should be an easy class. Requires work and time, but very doable.
He interrupts class when people leave to tell the entire lecture hall that this person will fail his class. He just reads off the powerpoint and that doesn't even cover everything on the tests. Basically just read your book, do the homework, and do the practice homework and practice exams before tests and and you'll do fine. Often runs over time.
Just attend his class to be there when he is taking attendance. he will do it only thrice.
Not an easy class to teach, but still was a bad experience. Asks questions in class to students and expects everyone to know and respond within 2 secs. I recommend taking the chem workshop, which helped me learn better rather than how he taught. I managed to get by with an A bc of the workshop. 3 Tests + final, randomly generated questions, beware.
Here's how to be successful, attend the class bc he gives out a few pop quizzes that could boost your overall grade btw 2-3 points. To study for exams just YouTube Tom Teets videos, do the Practice Homeworks in and out, and the Practice exam and make sure you learn the concept, then you get an A
Excellent.
Not particularly better nor worse than other UH Chem professors but has extra credit so consider picking Carasquillo for up to 5 points of extra credit to your final grade. Extra credit is just surprise attendance taking.
Don't take this guy. Totally disrespectful to students. Lazy, does not care, and cannot convey information clearly enough to be learned. Rely on book or another professor's lectures. Complete waste of time.
Oh man where do I start. Best advice: STAY AWAY. He doesnt care about his students
This professor is not good at teaching the material. Half the class dropped before the deadline. He doesn't give examples, he only reads his power points which are not posted anywhere. The exams make up your grade. He doesn't care if the students understand or not. Wouldn't take a class of his again.
I'll edit this if it goes downhill from here, but as far as I'm concerned, the people who write negatively about this man have no work ethic and write in big bubbly letters really freaking slowly. It's not hard to copy down his lectures. Just don't be on your phone in class and try not to procrastinate. Looks like its gonna be "VERY GOOD" indeed.
VERRRRY BAAAD!!!
I only attended class for the extra points (maybe 2 in the end), but keep this in mind if you enroll in his class: I had an 84.9 in his class. He wouldn't round me up to an 85 which was an A-. Completely useless class, just study the practice HWs and practice tests, you'll be better off. Also, don't buy the book.
None of his lectures matter. You need to read the entire book forwards, backwards, and then some. Only 3 20 question tests with malicious questions that deliberately trick you to lower your grade. He literally said he will do this and gets joy out of teaching freshmen a lesson. Doesn't respect your time, shows up late often. Please don't take him.
I took him my first semester at UH. Horrible teacher. He expects us to master the material by quickly going over it. All he does is read from his empty slides and he doesn't actually teach. If you're good at self teaching then don't bother showing up because you wont learn from him. Your grades are 94% tests and final. Try to get anyone else
And while I say attendance doesnt matter, he does give out pop quizzes that are bonus points DIRECTLY to your class overall grade. That being said, make sure you sit in a row with other people nearby so you can pass your quizzes down the rows easily. His tests are nothing like the homework or practice exams, and he doesnt explain concepts well.
This man is not veeeeerrrrryyy good. I don't know who would be a better professor, but I had a horrid time in this class. Notes did not prepare for test. He would say kids that left class early were not going to graduate and that they are the reason for our failures. Not very good at all. Although, he did bring candy on Halloween :)
boring lectures and does not teach most important things. have to teach yourself.
This class isn't easy at all but he makes it so much more difficult than it needs to be. His lectures are no help but it is best to show up for random attendance quizzes. He is not understanding at all and frequently gets mad if we don't understand the material. He blames us for failing but doesn't want to offer help. I would avoid if possible.
You're gonna have to read the textbook but he is a better option than Mark Smith and here's why: He posts optional review problems for each chapter on blackboard with 40-60 problems per chapter to review for tests. Between HW's, practice HW's, review problems, and a practice test, you have access to 200+ practice problems for each test
Lectures don't help for the test! Attendance not mandatory but occasional bonus quizzes so beneficial to come even if you don't learn anything... Yes exams are very hard no matter the professor. If you want to do well: watch Tom Teets youtube videos (he posts his lectures), do every hw & practice hw (4 attempts), & review problems that he posts.
Save yourself and try to get anyone else as your professor or take this course at the Community college
If you think you can learn chemistry all on your own, he's a great choice. If you're still considering him, seriously.. good luck! :)
Prof. Carrasquillo's lectures were boring and did little to prepare for exams. I showed up to every lecture and learned little. It was a lot of trying to teach myself, but that only goes so far. However, he does provide extra credit pop quizzes that go directly to the final grade. My advice: watch Prof. Teets YouTube lectures and form study groups.
Lectures are confusing, but he says some useful things sometimes. Most of this class requires self study - his review questions for each chapter are VERY helpful, do them! Also, reading the textbook is tedious but provides a lot better of an explanation. Not an easy class, but manageable. You have to work for your grade.
Gives like 1-3 points to your overall grade on extremely random pop quizzes. Expects students to already know most of the material, doesn't really explain anything. Test questions are worth basically 1 point to your overall grade. Get ready to read the textbook front and back.
Do not take this professor unless you have no other option... You barely understand anything he says and he also spends too long on one topic. He likes to call you out and embarrass you, if you are not following his rules. Get ready to teach yourself, if you want to pass.
No reviews. No online notes. Can't record lecture.
Look! Future chem students you're not hopeless. Just take good notes and study with a group and you'll be fine. Go to his lectures. He isn't the greatest by a longshot but he makes a great meme! Mediocre professor for a difficult class.
I took his class this past semester. It was the hardest class I took and it showed. I was sure I was going to fail but I managed to pull through a passing grade. Point is, you're better off self-studying. Attend class only for the pop quizzes. He knows the material, it's just unfortunate that he can't teach it.
I walked into this class ignoring all the comments that stated how bad the guy was. Biggest mistake of my life. Back out while you still can. Yes, he gives extra credit, but he's such a jerk with the way he collects the papers you probably won't end up getting credit. He DOES NOT POST NOTES and the tests are NOTHING like the HW's or practice tests.
WOW BEST PROFESSOR EVER! I love that you legit go to 3 hours of lecture a week and learn absolutely NOTHING! It really its a great way to spend my time. Don't even get me started on the great attitude he has!! I LOVE hearing "you're going to fail my class"! Its so great I cant even think of three tags to put because he actually does NOTHING. 1/10!
Run. Do not take this teacher. So boring we had to check his pulse every 5 mins. Tries to introduce higher level chemistry and lecture is not applicable to test. Stoped going to his lectures half-way through semester because I would learn just as much listening to him as sleeping in: that is none.
Worst professor. The first class, he took around 20 minutes to talk about dropping students. If you ask him a question he passes it off saying either we should remember from Chemistry 1 or we need to teach it ourselves. He only told us about extra Chem tutoring services at the end of class. Unless you can teach yourself chem 2,don't take this prof.
Just do not take him. Class in general is hard. A lot of self study.
Carasquillo does post his lecture slides/ notes online, and does not let you take pictures of the board. He covers alot in lectures but it's mostly conceptual. He post a practice exam the night before you're actual exam, you get one attempt but not considered extra credit.
Felt as though this course was designed to weed out students, rather than teach them anything. As far as I understand this professor is on par with the rest of the chemistry department at UH. If you are not strong in math and chemistry prepare to dedicate a massive amount of time to this course if you intend on passing. Very disappointed.
Chemistry at UH as a department is pretty bad overall. Carrasquillo isn't the best professor, but no matter who you have for Chem, you will have to learn most of it yourself. If you pay attention in class, you will learn a little bit about the things you need for the exams. If you put in the amount of effort, you will get the grade you want.
He was not good at explaining things when someone didn't understand, and would basically just repeat himself. Failing more than 3 homework assignments is an automatic drop. Every test question is 1% of your grade. Says test questions are copied from homework but homework questions are random from a large bank so no telling if you'll see everything.
Worst professor Ive taken in my academic career. From the very the first day to the last, he was very rude and loved to belittle students who asked questions. He would either point us to past material or the book. He never really taught but would only Lecture. Sadly I did not take the advice of other reviews... and I paid for it.
You have to teach yourself and pray you get a similar test to what you've studied. Each question you miss is detrimental. He is hateful, does not post notes, HW is barely worth anything yet you get dropped if you fail three. This is every professor, except some are less hateful. Your mental health is more important. Pick ANY other professor.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. This is a weed-out class for a reason. You will have to teach yourself, his lectures are confusing and extremely boring. He has no respect for his students and will not help during office hours.
horrible prof worst grade ever recived in my life
This class is very hard. You have to hope to get a test similar to what you studied. He does not seem very approachable either. The homework is worth only 6% of your grade while the test are worth 20% each. He does not post his lectures online. I would take any other professor.
Don't take this guys class, plain and simple. He doesn't care about anyone and whenever you have questions you will just be dismissed and told to read the book. He says to do practice problems but doesn't provide any. He expects you to teach yourself the material.
Lectures are just him talking for one and a half hours. For once I actually wished we had more homework. You have one homework a week, and you're timed. He constantly reminds you how everyone fails this class, yet has never came up with ways to set up his students for success. Also wastes time telling us how he doesn't like people leaving.
Prof. Carrasquillo's CHEM 1331 class is awful. His lectures are unclear, slow, draining, and unhelpful. He does not care about his students one bit. The chemistry department at UH is already bad enough, and Prof. Carrasquillo makes it about as bad as it can get. If at all possible, try to avoid him and take another lecturer.
He's a terrible professor. He gets distracted during lecture by students leaving and coming (students have lives outside of class TOO), answers his phone, and talks about his personal life during class time. The class could've been an easy A if it was taught by another professor.
my expectations were set pretty low going into survey of PChem because people said it was hard and he was a bad professor. It met my expectations. Exams were easier than I thought.
The lectures are useless. If you read the book you should at least get a B and for a better grade I'd recommend solving as many practice problems as you can. I honestly don't know how he is because I spent most of the time sleeping but I guess if you can go for someone else you definitely should
Professor Carrasquillo is by far one of the worst professors I had for my first semester in college. He doesn't post his notes and his lectures leave everyone confused for the homework and exams (which are worth A LOT). If you didn't take AP chemistry in high school, you aren't going to pass this class, at least not with this guy. Pick someone else
He was a super annoying professor. Always getting mad at students for leaving/entering the classroom after his lecture starts. The only aspect I liked about him is that he talks slowly and repeats his points during lecture multiple times. The problem is that NONE OF HIS POWERPOINTS MATTER AND THE INFO ON THERE IS NOT ON THE TEST. Read the book.
Carrasquillo isn't as bad as I expected but I still had to learn a lot on my own. Read your textbook, watch Teets, do practice problems, bring questions to ACS and you should be fine. I've asked him questions after class and he seemed willing to help but he sometimes doesn't understand what you're asking. His lectures aren't great but he tries.
He is a cool professor. His lectures are not the most helpful but if you read the book and go to lectures, you will can pass. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK and download your attempts! They are the best ways to study. They are made from the same test bank!
Day 1 of the class professor goes " YOU SHOULD'VE KNOWN THIS YESTERDAY". Day 2 professor goes, "Alright","Ok", " YOU SHOULD'VE KNOWN THIS YESTERDAY".
Terrible lectures, he talks super slow and is not good with technology. You basically have to teach yourself out of the test books and watch videos online.
The way he talks absolutely ruins him as a professor. Very slow and drawn out. Lectures do not help. You will need to read the textbook and find other resources to learn. Find another chemistry professor!
Lectures are borderline useless and long. Be prepared to learn directly from the textbook. Tests count as the vast majority of your points, so focus on them - though remember to do HWs since test questions are drawn from them. Don't pick this guy unless you want to learn by yourself, he's not mean - but he's just not effective in teaching.
Dr. Carrasquillo is the worst professor I've had the misfortune of having. He gave unclear lectures and always took time after every test to lambast the students who showed up to class for... not showing up to class? The tests are simple CASA tests, so if you read the book, you'll be fine. Only take him if you have absolutely no other choice.
Overall, I would stay away from him as a professor. His lectures are often very redundant and he does not do a good job of explaining the material. The only reason I passed this class was because of chemistry youtube videos. They taught me more than this professor did.
I would try to keep as far away from him as possible. He has a terrible accent and has to have a laser pointer on the PowerPoint at all times. Lectures teach you absolutely nothing when it comes time for the exam and homework. He gets mad at us for not being at the lectures. You could get struck by lightning before he offers you any extra credit.
honestly just don't. don't even bother taking his class. But, then most of the UH chem department is trash, so if you're stuck with him good luck haha. His lectures are SUPER boring. I'd recommend skipping lectures and reading the textbook instead
This was the class I studied for the most during the semester. I read the textbook, went to the lectures, and attended the supplement class to help me achieve a decent grade in the class, but I ended up failing the class. The grade for the class is purely based on the tests and the homework. I highly recommend not taking his class.
To preface: I took this class in the midst of a global pandemic. He is extremely knowledgeable about chemistry, but he is a "traditional" professor. I think that was his weakness this semester bc this was an online course. Heavy tests but good grading scale. Not the best English. The textbook taught me more. An A is not impossible, just work hard.
I should have dropped this class when a person sitting next to me at Cougar Woods warned me about him during the first week of school. Made it another three weeks and dropped due to falling so far behind. Was terrible at chemistry in HS and he was no help.
A truly inspiring person, he definitely knows what he talks about. Despite all of this, he is not the best teacher in an online setting.
He told me that reading the textbook would be the best so I skipped his courses and read. I recommend reading textbook, watching tom teets (if needed) then doing all attempts of homework and practice homework (note that the homework questions come from the same question bank as the exams). He has a thick accent and does odd analogies in class.
I took him last semester, and he was literally the worst. He just skimmed over the content in his lectures and expected you to know how to do stuff. I just ended up not going to the lectures and I would rewatch them later on x2 speed because he talked so slow. If you want to pass his class, I highly recommend watching Tom Teets Youtube videos.
Whoooo boy. Once Prof Carrasquillo starts lecturing, he doesn't stop. HW is every week and is good practice for the tests. Read the textbook and actively take notes. Attending lecture isn't recommended if you are disciplined at keeping up with the readings for the week's HW. Reach out to the prof via email for easy-to-understand replies.
When you look up professors that teach harder classes, you should take the review with a grain of salt. However, you should only take him if you have no other option. My 77 year old grandma who didnt even go to college couldve taught the course better. Save yourself the trouble and choose another professor
Self-study. It is the only way. You won't get a lot from the lectures. I suggest you find the Bott's videos and learn from there. His lectures are draining and unengaging.
Do not take this class if you have another option. I attended lectures that didn't help with the homework or tests. Most students had to learn from other professors or look up supplemental material to teach themselves.
After a short amount of time, I stopped attending the lectures bc I have never heard such a monotone and unenthusiastic lecturer in my life. Whenever I emailed him about an issue/circumstance, he was not understanding at all, like he has no heart. Other than that, I watched Bott's vids to learn cuz u have to teach urself anyways. Don't take him.
This class is a weed-out class, finals and exams account for 94% of your grade. Carrasquillo's lectures are slow and boring. Although I tried to attend every lecture, his materials do not prepare you for the actual exams. I had to look for outside sources and ask friends from other classes to teach me the actual material.
Lectures are slow, hard to understand, and has nothing to do with the actual homework or exams. Prepare to self-study. Majority of grade is based on exams.
Avoid at all costs. Lectures are unbearably slow and incomplete. The professor is unenthusiastic, monotone, and seems lost. The lecture atmosphere is dead. Do not take this professor especially if you are newer to Chemistry.
I made the mistake of not looking here first. I don't want to be too harsh on this man because, in all honesty, he sounds like a stroke victim. When you play his lecture recordings at 2x speed he sounds like a normal person, that's how slow he speaks. Please do not take his class. Save yourself the trouble of having to teach yourself everythinggg.
Prof Carrasquillo is ngl, a bit old. Hes really slow with his lectures and most of the time sounds bored of teaching the class. Hes super unenthusiastic, his mic is always messing up so you might as well just teach yourself from the book cause I go in that class and come out really confused. Sorry prof :/
This professor is simply a disappointment. His lectures aren't at all understandable. He is boring and monotone and the grade is entirely based on tests and homework. If you depend on his lectures, you won't learn anything. Everything I learned was from my independent studying and I still ended up dropping. Take someone else if you can.
He never really explained the material well in class. I always ended up having to study and learn the material outside of class. He is also very petty. I dont think I really ever learned from his lectures and I made sure to attend all of them. I ended up watching videos from a different teacher instead to actually be able to learn the material.
This class is extremly hard for no reason. I studied for 7+ hours a day for two weeks before each test and barely passed. The only thing that help was the UH Launch tutors. It is a lot to memorize and so much material on each test it is nearly impossible. The amount of practice required to pass is not possible with 15 or more hours.
Pros: Gives review problems for the tests, gives extra credit, cured my insomnia. Cons: Manotanous voice, condescending, points out students for leaving class wasting class time.
All questions asked are either half answered or answered so patronizingly that it discourages other student from saying anything. Class is extremely test heavy and the homework doesn't always reflect the test. He assumes we know way more than we actually do and thinks we can memorize things "instantaneously". Seems bored teaching a first year class
Never absorbed one thing from his lectures. Watch Professor Tom Teets on Youtube and basically self-study. 94% of your grade comes from exams and the rest is based on homework. Good luck.
Worst professor ever
He's not a bad professor, he's entertaining and is very thorough on his lecture slides, but his problem is that he focuses on the wrong things. I'd get out of his lectures and not have any idea what to do on the homework assignments. I REALLY WISHED HE WORKED OUT PRACTICE PROBLEMS! He did this right before our final, and it helped SO much. (Tom T!)
This professor is not professional at all. His lectures drag on due to his monotone voice and agonizingly slow pace. He doesnt even go through material that is too relevant, he just reads off slides. Attending his lectures was a waste of time, and I honestly think he needs to retire from teaching. Watch Tom Teets for some actual learning.
This professor is awful those not know how to motivate and engage with students. Lectures given in class those not cover nothing in exams would not recommend. Never mind the fact that he is one of the chemistry department heads and cant even teach.
Most people reviewing Professor Carrasquillo are being really unfair to him. This is a weed-out class, and you're going to do poorly if you're lazy. His lecture slides are concise and the information on the slides are all you need to do well. He's a super monotonous speaker, but provides a lot of practice. Do the reviews and take notes.
This man speaks slower than my grandma can walk. He never really explains anything. Your best bet if you want to pass is to watch lecture videos from other profs
Very slow and ineffective lectures paired with difficult content make for a really bad class. You'd be better off just studying and learning all the content on your own.
Do yourself a favor and don't take this professor for Chem 2. You WILL have to self-teach yourself everything if he is your only option. I recommend watching Bott's videos to help you with learning the material taught in this course.
No matter who you take this class is just absolutely horrible. But I went to three of his lectures and stopped attending because he was lecturing over stuff that didn't even help on the homework. His lectures are so slow and boring. I only got an A- from getting resources from other professors.
Get ready for a lot of self studying.
His lecture were almost impossible to learn it, jumping all over the place. He always berated the students that had to leave early, despite letting us out late every time. He does random poppers when he sees that half of the class is gone (this was because they skip to either do the exam or to study for it) and didn't let them make them up.
The chemistry department at UH is quite awful though but just prepare yourself for a lot of self study, practice practice practice! He does care about his students as long as they are respectful towards him but he goes very slow which is difficult as you end up doing a lot of catch up for the exams
Mumbles through most of the lecture. Slow speaker. Just watch the lectures posted online at 2x speed to make him speak at a normal pace. The only helpful part about the course was the posted practice questions. One can do well in this course by running through online lectures and doing practice problems.
Don't bother showing up to lectures cuz they're worthless.
If you're in this class, I suggest watching Tom Teets on Youtube. For our lecture, he ended up posting the old lecture videos but I wouldn't count on that. He doesn't post his slides for notes and he teaches fast so it can be hard to keep up. To succeed, use as many practice problems as you can. Pop quizzes are extra credit & workshops are helpful.
Just a tad bit disrespectful toward students at times. Lectures were pretty unhelpful a majority of the time, but he tries his best.
Avoid if possible. He is not good at explaining material. He talks very slow, but it doesn't make him easier to understand, it only makes focusing hard. He is condescending and unhelpful when answering questions and . When you tell him you need help he only tells you to study more. He also runs long most classes and gets mad if people try to leave
He genuinely explains concepts very well but doesn't post his lecture slides and doesn't go by the book. However, he waits for people to write down notes. HW due every Sunday. Posts practice problems before exam. Good at answering questions. No attendance but if you skip, you have no idea what he went over that day. No extra credit.
FRESHMAN AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! if you must take him watch Tom Teets videos online on youtube he helped me a lot because this course is so hard and professor Edwin is not great at all.
Had a horrible time in this class. The professor was horrible at explaining things and wasnt helpful at all. Homework due everyweek and tests make up most of your grade.Didnt take attendence every lecture but would have suprise questions/quizes that would count as attendence.
The worst professor ever. Should have replaced him for another one for freshman and sophomore to less suffer.
Very fast pace lectures. Wish concepts were laid out a little better. As someone who came from an AP chem class who's teacher never once gave a lecture, this was new. A lot of this class was new, or much more in depth. If you have not taken AP chem, you will most likley be lost.
I just stopped going to lecture and started passing. So the moral of the story is, you have a better chance at passing by watching youtube videos than going to his lectures.
Without a doubt, one of the best professors I ever had this semester. He is very passionate about chemistry, which made the class enjoyable for me. Also, be prepared to read. If you are required to take chemistry, then this professor is the best option for you.
Not the best at teaching and explaining, heavy accent, a little disrespectful towards students. Did not share any lecture slides, did not allow us to take picture of the lecture slide. I learned more from Tom Teets on youtube than his lectures.
I made a mistake of not checking rate my professor before choosing him...never again. I went to a few of his lectures at the beginning of his class and never went again. I watched Tom Teets on youtube for the rest of the semester, he's the only reason i got an A. Carrasquillo made you feel dumb if you ever asked anything in class, just overall bad.
If I knew, I would've fully not believed the ratings here and taken a different professor. His lectures are very tiring and slow, I learned nothing from the few I attended, and opted to self study for everything. My knowledge of AP Chemistry did help to an extent, but Tom Teets helped even more. I did better doing that than I would've going to lecs
I attended all his lectures and did all my homework on time. I still failed his class .Wish I'd heard of Tom Teets earlier .I tried to save my grade after test 1 ,but it kept getting worse. He just tells stories the entire time, it was my first semester in college and lesson learned .If he's the last chem teacher don't even take chem that semester.
Prof. Carrasquillo is arguably one of the worst teachers I have ever had in the history of schooling. Lectures are incredibly unhelpful, slow, and hard to sit through. If that isn't bad enough he tries to make everything as difficult as possible for his students. If you can, avoid this professor and watch Tom Teets instead.
He knows his stuff but his lectures are 50 minutes of continuous droning. So many people straight up stopped attending lecture, myself included. It upsets me that such a mediocre professor is so many students' introduction to college chemistry. Avoid him if possible, or get ready to skip and teach yourself the material.
He should be the last professor to look at, if he's ur last choice wait another semester and take another chem prof. save urself and sanity. please.
Do not take him. DO NOT DO NOT. The class itself is already challenging so imagine your worst enemy trying to make it harder for no reason. This class and teacher destroyed me.
The only reason why I passed was because I signed up for a tutoring class adjacent to what he was teaching, in which two students taught me better than he did. If you must, use Tom Teets, the textbook, and try to find tutoring and practice problems; I don't think I ever used his own material to pass. Our first test average score was 50-60-ish.
If we weren't completely comfortable with partial derivatives ( which was not a prerequisite for the class) he would ask why we were there and tell us to drop. He was better for physical chemistry than gen chem 2, but it's hard to learn when you are getting degraded the whole time. He also curved down to a C average.
please run away I still have nightmares
Nuh uh
gives work on topic he doesnt go over well.
If you took AP chem and were good, then you will be fine. It's mostly review I barely studied. If you hate chem and or suck it you have a few options if you only have this guy. Either go to Larsen's lectures and maybe skip this one and risk pop quiz attendance, or read the textbook and watch videos. He is not that bad if you know chem.
His lectures are useless and I had to start off my freshman year of college self learning chemistry because his lectures had no useful information and wasn't even related to the tests.
He is genuinely one of the worst professors I have ever had to study under. He spends more time complaining about student performance than teaching the material. He demands you stay for the entire class time, whilst wasting time complaining about class performance. He actively shuts down students who ask "simple questions". DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Dr. [Professor's Last Name] is an extraordinary chemistry professor whose passion for the subject is both inspiring and contagious.
He's so soft-spoken in a large lecture hall that he's hard to hear. He often gives incorrect information and contradicts the textbook. If you take the SEP workshop with this course, it'll make the semester so much easier. The practice tests on Cengage mirror the exams. Attendance isn't required, but he offers pop quizzes for extra credit.
He might of been a great instructor decades ago but he is honestly jaded. Lectures are quite banal and constantly complains about how disappointed he is with students and the class is not very engaging; there are fes assignments and there is little room for mistakes due to low number of questions.
Terrible professor wouldn't ever take again doesn't answer questions and barely provides review for tests.
Genuinely an awful lecturer. He may be "proficient" in his field, but he is terrible at conveying his thoughts/observations to the class. He (on multiple occasions) has given up on finishing lectures, spends an unreasonable amount of time complaining about non-chemistry topics, and generally disrespects the students' time.
Genuine torture. Terrible at teaching and disrespectful of students' time, often holding the whole class until 5 minutes before the next class, using the last 10–15 minutes to criticize student performance. Exams are overly weighted and brutal. If you get this professor, self-study instead. Skip class and watch Tom Teets for better learning.
The professor constantly complains about students leaving 10 minutes early, which feels more disruptive than helpful. He seems to have anger issues, making the class uncomfortable. He mainly reads off PowerPoint slides, making it boring. Prepare to study on your own and do practice problems. I would not recommend this professor at all.
The biggest problem is the lectures. Even if you show up, it's hard to understand the content of his lectures without doing your own studying before. If you rely on his lectures alone, you don't have a great chance in this class. My advice? Watch Tom Teets and do many practice problems. If you can take Larsen, he will answer your questions better.
TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ABSOLUTELY HATE YOURSELF AND WANT TO BE IN TOTAL DESPAIR
AVOID THIS DUDE, if u don't show up to his class you won't get the extra 2 bonus points. His lectures are not helpful at all and he does not care about your success. I would not want my worst enemy to have to go through this class. If you dedicate your life to watching tom teets and doing practice exams you have a fair shot at getting an A.
Taking Professor Carrasquillo was an okay experience. My AP Chem background helped me follow the lectures, but without it, I don't think I would've succeeded. He often kicked students out for using computers or not engaging and complained about the new generation of students. By the end of the semester, only 1/5 of the class attended lecture.
My sincerest condolences for any future students taking his class.
Would not recommend. His lectures are hard to understand and does very little practice problems in the lectures. Your grade depends heavily on exams and didn't seem to care how you were doing in the class. Since the first day he said not to email him about your grade.
I WISH THERE WAS A WAY TO GIVE THIS MAN ZERO STARS! HE DOESNT CARE IF YOU FAIL DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!
Lectures were a little confusing but they did give you an overall idea of how the lecture material worked. The really bad things about about the lectures would be how he ranted about how bad technology is in the classroom, him hating student habits, and stopping to complain about people leaving early. He is otherwise an average professor.
He has a despise towards new technology and makes it known. His lectures are helpful if you have read the book before attending the class. I know plenty of people who relied on tom teets but I did a mix of textbook, which has powerpoint notes, and tom teets. If I could go back, I would do practice problems. Lecture is not needed to succeed.
This professor had an accent and was hard to understand. The course focused on very specific topics within chemistry that was not the so called "fundamentals of chemistry". Professor has little to no respect for students. I studied for days on end for each exam to score around 75%. Best way to succeed in class for me was to skip and study at home.
The problem with this class is with the professor. He managed to take a relatively easy, freshman course, and make it harder. He would frequently teach or go on rants about irrelevant topics, like the usage of this laptops (for notes!), and started giving pop quizzes for extra credit late in the year, which he didn't announce previously.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.The guy is pushing the age of 80 stuttering on words and forgetting what he's saying mid lecture .The homework is completely different than what he teaches and his tests are worth 80% of your grade. My class 240 people enrolled at the beginning and at the end, there was barely 50 people attending lectures.
If you are forced to take him, do not attend his lectures as attendance is optional. He cannot teach in a clear and understandable manner. Just watch Teets on YouTube and self-study.
He was a great teacher. He went over the material that would be in the test. I would suggest to do the practice exam. In my experience they help me understand what type of question I should expect in the exam. He gives out two extra points at the end of the semester. They are participation points, a team group and a writing portion.
I have reoccurring nightmares about this class. If you're not religious, pick a religion and start praying as soon as you walk in through those doors just know your life will flash before your eyes. Never in my life would I recommend this professor to anyone not even my worst enemy. Save your self and I mean it. Beware I mean it, please.
One of if not the best professors I have ever had. Chemistry is already difficult at UH, but his lectures were easy to follow and made the topics a lot interesting. He is charismatic and very wise. Take HIM if you want to save your chemistry grade, you will not regret it. He does give out random pop quizzes, so just be aware of that.
He literally doesnt teach anything thats gonna be on the exams.
literally better off skipping class and reading the textbook at home if your other option is sitting in his lecture hall. tests are super hard ONLY because he doesn't teach anything relevant to the exam he made
Skip the lectures, go watch tom teets and read the textbook. DO the cengage test reviews.
When first seeing his rmp rating I got scared but after taking his class, I did not see what all the hate was about. Professor Carrasquillo makes the time and effort to make his class interesting and fun to attend. The tests can be perceived to be hard but if you take the time to review you will be fine.
Scream Hallelujah if you want, but it looks like this professor won't be teaching after this fall semester. It's great, because his teaching methods for the fundamentals of chemistry were completely lacking. Accented voice, test heavy, and clearly hates technology with a passion with all that anger in his mind.
If you want a lecture filled with pulling his pants up every ten seconds, a saying of “verrry goood” every minute, and abstained anger for leaving class early or using technology in class, then this is the professor for you. Otherwise, if you have actual common sense, avoid if he teaches again.
Yes very cool
This class is literally not that bad, just do your Cengage review and utilize resources outside of the lecture itself
The only things I remember from his banal lectures is him saying “verrrrrry gooood” more than ten times and he has a tendency to pull his pants up so much. He also has a short fuse when people leave his lectures early or use laptops for notes. Clearly isn't “fundamental” enough to keep teaching in this day and age.
Run while you can, I have nightmares every single night about this class.
Say it with me: "VERRRRRY GOOOD!" Needless to say, it's the exact opposite, regardless of how Edwin wants to say that. It's "very good" to choose other professors while also avoiding Arnold Guloy.
Please run quicker than a cheetah whenever you see this professor or when you enroll in your classes. He's terrible, I swear.
Run don't walk from his class. This man was the bane of my existence. Tests are worth so much but his time is worth so little because this man cannot teach for the life of him. He teaches off slides that were probably made the last time he got some action. (1980s.....)
The WHOLE department of chemistry at UH isn't good take it at a community college. This professor gave out pop quizzes at the end of midterm 2; the exams are kinda like the practice exams, which is what helps me. He goes very fast in the lectures, leaving many confused. I learned nothing from him. Watch Tom Teets and Chad's Prep TRUST
Lectures and book did not align with exam. this class is a self taught class. You are expected to stay the full period but yet provides little structure or guidance? Exams were harder than the book material. Read that again. Can I get a large pizza with pepperoni please blink blink.
This professor is absolutely not good and, but as long as you study outside his lectures you'll be good. --Ali Fatawi
If you are 80+, hate technology, have no respect for people's time, are bad at teaching, and love the phrase "VERRRY GOOOD," then you can relate to this prof and should take his class. WARNING: if ALL do not apply to you, long story short: Just don't take his class.
bad, just bad. he was not a good lecturer and never taught me anything. you should still go to lecture to get a foundation for the material but use other people to really understand what's going on
