Great and funny guy who really knows his stuff but very tough marker.
Edwin is the best professor at this school! He is extremely organized, grades fair and always available to help. Edwin is hilarious and witty, and you will laugh every single class. He is not only an expert in his area of expertise, but he is a wealth of knowledge in general. Take any of his classes you will not regret it. They should pay him more!
Edwin is one of the best lecturers I've ever had. He's funny and personable. I wish that he taught more classes because he has a gift for it. He's also incredibly clear about grading.
Really great guy! He knows his stuff. Expectations for tests and projects were a little unclear for the first bit but got better as the semester went along. He really tries to keep it interesting and light.
Edwin was amazing! Loved his class and the lectures were so great. He really tried to relate all the material to real situations currently happening or to his life experiences. Great prof, if you missed a lecture it was ok b/c he posts it online. But I tried to make it to every lecture even though it was a 9:30 am class, so I think that says a lot!
He's a good prof and manages to get people really interested in pursuing sociology further. Excellent lectures.
I took 100A with him last year, but I haven't had a prof like him since. He's one of the most amazing profs I've had, and I genuinely would take one of his classes all over again. He's funny, caring, and keeps you entertained and happy through his lectures. Great guy.
Best lectures for a class I have taken! He uses self-deprecating stories to teach concepts, which are always hilarious. However, he expects a lot in terms of assignments and tests. They are marked incredibly hard but the questions are given ahead of time. Would definitely take another one of his classes!
Second class I've taken with this prof and I do not regret it one bit. Interesting lectures, clear grading criteria, tutorial was not mandatory! The lectures and the textbook *gasp* actually said the same things!. Not afraid to joke during class and add life stories that were actually interesting + EASY online quizzes. 10/10 would take again.
I've taken both soci 100A/B with him and I cannot express how much I loved those classes. He is by far my favourite prof at Uvic with his relatable connections to material that at times can be hard to grasp. He is a down to earth guy who wants students to succeed if they put the effort into the material, and show up to class.
really good prof and great lecturer. The mini quizzes were very easy which is a great way to save your grade a bit if you did poorly on a test. Do not underestimate the tutorial assignment for SOCI 100B and make sure that you study for the exams EVEN THOUGH he gives the questions ahead of time. Awesome prof overall
Best prof I've ever had! He doesn't mark the exams but his lectures are amazing! So funny, and easy to talk to outside of class
His lectures are legendary, yeah attendance isn't mandatory but you're missing out if you don't go! He's super interesting to listen to, and his quizzes and midterms are super straightforward, would definitely take his class again.
I cannot recommend Edwin enough. He is hilarious and very insightful. His test questions are told to you before the exam so you know exactly what to expect. There are quizzes from the textbook, which are very simple marks. Tutorials are included, but only once a week. The material is very interesting and helps you to understand society differently.
Edwin is super funny and makes boring material fun. Really easy class. Can get kinda boring sometimes because he doesn't deviate too much from the lecture slides.
I love edwin!! My favourite prof by far!!! his classes are always very interesting and insightful
They are really passionate about the topics they teach, they made this class enjoyable. I really respect them. They are a tough grader as I saw a huge difference between their grading and their TA grading. Overall, I would def take another course with them.
Edwin was by far the best prof I had this semester, he was hilarious and made you want to attend lectures. Even though he gives you all of the questions that are going to be in the midterm and final, he made you want to attend his lectures. He was also extremely accomodating for my busy sports schedule, wish he graded our midterms and not the TAs.
I loved this class so much!!! Dr. Hodges is without a doubt my favourite prof at Uvic so far. Soci 100A is a really interesting course and he is very clear about what he wants for exams and assignments. An amazing course that I would highly recommend.
Edwin Hodge is the best prof I have had at UVIC. His lectures are inspirational and his dad jokes are unreal. He gives clear instructions for exams and online quizzes help boost your grade. 10/10 would recommend
Edwin's class was my absolute favorite because of the way he taught it. He is super passionate about what he does which is always good and gets the class to see the reasons why he thinks sociology is important. Definitely a tougher class than I thought but definitely worth taking!
Absolutely fantastic prof. I haven't had anybody in the four years of my undergrad be as engaging as Ed. Tough grader and does expect a lot from you on the exams, but as he gives you all the questions beforehand you just need to prepare thoroughly. Hilarious in lecture, questions asked on exams are fair, just go to class for the written answers.
Lectures are usually interesting and he seems like a great guy, but his expectations for the exam are too high. You can spend hours coming up with answers and he will still find a way to take marks off. I put more effort into this course than any of my others and it ended up being my lowest grade.
I liked Edwin and always looked forward to his lectures, he always brought a smile to my face especially during a challenging time in my life. I didnt like that he took marks off our exam and found there was always an excuse to take marks off. I worked very hard in this class and just wish I got a bit more rewarded. He is hilarious though!
He's funny and the lectures are funny! The amount of work you put into the class doesn't show with the way he grades. FYI: yes he gives the questions ahead of time but it's not as easy as just googling them because some terms and concepts are not found in the way he wants. Anyone who got over 75%, went to class and worked their asses off for it.
Edwin's lectures were so funny! If you received anything over 80% it means you showed up to most classes and worked like hell outside of class for exams. This was my worst graded class and I spent hours and hours preparing for exams!!!
Edwin is one of the best. His lectures are always exciting and funny, while actually teaching you something new. His extremist movements class brings you new meaning to the world, and i would suggest to anyone of any discipline. Love him, would 100% recommend!
Dr. Hodge is amazing, he's funny, caring, and totally relatable. Super engaging and makes lectures a pleasure. Very approachable and allows students to share their opinions in class. Only flaw is that he's the hardest marker I've ever had. Impossible to do super well in his classes.
He's a good guy but the hardest marker. I normally get A+'s and this was my lowest grade. If you get above 80 in his classes it's actually A+ work, but it's hard to achieve with him.
I really like this prof. His lectures are super interesting and he makes some pretty funny jokes. His midterm exams are written and they are tough but he gives the questions in advance so you have time to prepare your answers. Even though the exams are tough I felt I got a lot out of the class. I'd recommend.
Hodge is an amazing professor. He is able to make the class laugh and get everyone to engage with any topic. That being said, he is easily the hardest marker I've had in my four years at UVic. I am typically an A+ student and received a B in the class. Great prof, hard marker.
Dr. Hodge is the reason I've decided to major in sociology. His lectures were amazing and informative and he truly cares about what he's teaching. He constantly reminds students of the relevance of sociology and it was a privilege to learn from such a dedicated and passionate professor. If you have the chance, take a class from Dr. Hodge!
Professor Hodge himself was a very good lecturer. It was an engaging and funny class, but I found some topics to be a little redundant. Aside from weekly readings and quizzes (which don't take long), and preparing for tests (which require at least 4 hours of preparation time since the TA's mark EXTREMELY harsh), the class isn't too heavy
If not because of him, I would never get my ass to school at 9:30am to attend lectures. You will do well if you put effort into it. Be extremely prepared for exams and attend tutorials - they are helpful.
Edwin was an amazing prof, I sincerely looked forward to his class every day and am forever bitter about losing out on weeks of his class. He really encourages your participation in class, and finds the humour in the class material. He's not an easy marker, but I didn't find him any more difficult than most of my other profs.
Edwin and Bruce are equally amazing profs. Edwin made the switch to online fair. He was very consistent on getting grades out in a reasonable time.
Amazing Professor. Funny, Relatable, and Interesting. Always willing to chat about topics of personal interest.
The TA's can be really rude but I love this prof. 10/10 best prof I've ever had. He's so down to earth and chill. Almost everyone showed up to his lectures and it was a 9am class so that says a lot
He is FANTASTIC I am an education major but he has made me want to get a bachelors in sociology. He is interactive and funny and engaging and his class is never boring. Other than weekly packback worth less than 20% the grades come from the term paper, midterm, and final.
Best Professor I've ever had. I get some of my worst grades from him, but it feels fair. Very down to Earth and treats students like people. First prof whose classes I have taken for fun.
Edwin is the only reason I took SOCI 100B (after SOCI 100A with him). He's amazing and his Zoom classes were very engaging. However, you should not put too much weigh on your marks if you're in his class - the exams are hard, and the TAs are extremely tough markers.
Super nice and funny guy to listen to but the exams are so hard and you can't cheat.
Dr. Hodge was the best! He was really good at connecting the course content to real-life scenarios, and the content of the course is really interesting. He got me really interested in Sociology, and he was my favourite prof this semester. The mid-term was really difficult, though, so make sure you're taking good notes and studying hard!
I'm friends with one of the TA's and it's not them who mark hard it's him. He blames them so students think that there is nothing wrong with him. So many behind the scene mind games that go on.
I really enjoyed his lectures, he is a good story teller and makes going to class interesting and engaging. However, I went to him outside of class for exam prep help and he said I had it on lock and not to worry, but after getting the exam back I did really poorly. Grading seems to be an issue for a lot of people who have taken his classes.
Edwin was an amazing professor. Classes are very laid-back and genuinely enjoyable. No pop quizzes, no homework assignments. Just two tests and one term paper plus weekly discussion. Attendance is not required, and honestly there is no reason to. I always wait until Friday night and sit through an entire week worth of lecture recordings.
His lectures were engaging. He always related to real-life situations and sometimes pop culture, but his class is very difficult. He said his class averages are 65-70%. His exams are very difficult making it challenging to get a decent grade because exams weigh so much in his class. Don't recommend taking it as an elective.
Edwin is a great guy... but his tests are insanely challenging. I learned a ton in the class and had my perspective changed on a couple issues. The average for the first midterm was 57%. Tests are so hard. Tutorials aren't really useful and don't prepare you well for the tests. This isn't an easy A like your parents tell you lol. Dropped my GPA
Ive had Dr. Hodge for 100a and 100b and I think he is a really great professor. He answers emails so quick and helps as much as he can. His tests are difficult but they are fair. His class is super interesting and Important. He gives great feedback and is super organized with his students and goes into depth on what he expects for papers and exams
I ended up doing bad on the midterm cause I thought it be more lecture heavy but it was 90% textbook questions. Dont listen to him when he says just to skim the textbook. A started skipping class and just grinded the textbook instead. I ended up with an A on the final. Unless u like reading a text book from A to Z, good luck. Lectures are useless.
Good lecturer. Not very accessible outside of class because of how many students he has. Tests are LECTURE HEAVY. Super chill guy and gives you modern-day examples to explain lectures. Attend every class, TAKE NOTES and read the textbook generally. Better than 100A.
Edwin's lectures were really enjoyable to go to and presented the material in an interesting way. Midterms / final are HARD and come about 60/40 textbook vs. lecture. Reading the textbook and taking notes on it is important. Had a good TA, which really helped.
Edwin Hodge made lectures very interesting and he is a funny guy. He made the course topics super interesting and I felt driven to go to his classes. However, the exams are very tough, abstract, and most of the students did not do well on their exams. Hodge and the TA's marked the term papers very hard and overall it was not an easy class.
By far my favorite class I've attended. The lectures were 9am and attendance wasn't mandatory, but I went to every one just because he was so fun and interesting to listen to. The tests were fair, if you spent time and studied for them you were fine (pre covid), although when I took 100B online the tests were much harder, even if you studied a lot.
One of the more engaging professors at uvic. Classes weren't madatory but I still went simply because Hodge is just a cool guy and he always made the class enjoyable. His test style is very straight forward, basically if you read the readings and listened in lectures, you'll get at least 90%. Would definitely recommend any class he teaches.
A few things irked me about him, he is very firm that he needs to be addressed as Dr, also he strongly condemned self-diagnosis- which I found classist, (not everyone is wealthy enough or has access to a professional.) Good lectures though, and interesting to listen to. Very hard marker. The test questions are very niche.
Edwin's lectures are entertaining and often leave you inspired or even just questioning how you view the world. He is not afraid to share his opinion, make jokes in class and encourages participation from students and questions. He gives thoughtful feedback when prompted. I can't wait to take class with him next semester
Great prof!
Edwin is a solid prof. The only thing holding him back from a 5/5 is the fact that he grades SO HARD and on few things. Other than a few units that were boring the class material was enticing and the lectures were engaging.
Lectures are so amazing. He tries to be hip with the kids and kind of succeeds, actually. Chaotic energy. He's a gameplay streamer in his spare time. I feel he gives you all you need to do well, as long as you put in the time & get really familiar with basic concepts. Also do Revel quizzes! Very easy if you do readings. Basically a free 15%
Hodge was a very engaged lecturer and kept the class interesting by relating material to current events and our lives. The slides for the class were straightforward, easy to follow, and had the perfect amount of text.
I loved Edwin's lectures! Sometimes, the material was a little bland, but Edwin always found a way to get the class engaged. Get ready for good discussion, and lots of jokes
fun class, aggressive marking. Don't take
Good professor. Very passionate about his teaching. Enjoyable lectures. Makes jokes here and there. But, very hard grader. Not easily satisfied. Expects too much. Biased (won't grade well if he doesn't agree with you)/expects you to be knowledgeable like you've had years of experience on the topics. Don't take as an easy elective.
Edwin is a stellar professor. He makes lectures unbelievably entertaining; there were days where I would only show up just for his class. The grading is quite tough, but manageable. I think if you go into his tests/papers with the intention of doing the bare minimum, your grade will reflect that. He will allow you to disagree, but you must support.
for a first year course he is way too harsh of a marker, the midterm questions were based a lot on specific things from lectures. I will say he does have amazing lectures, but the midterms and final exams take away from all his great qualitieis.
Edwin Hodge is a nice guy with charismatic lectures but he's too tough of a grader. I took this class as a summer class so condensed from the usual 4 months into 7 weeks and I wouldn't say there were too many readings or too many assignments, I think it was all very manageable but for a class with no pre-requisites he grades way too harsh
Edwin is a great professor who seems dedicated to teaching. However, his tests are brutal. I am normally an A student and am in my 4th year but struggled to get 75% on the midterm. This was for a 100 level class and I am a fourth year student. Definitely take a class from him if you aren't fussy about your GPA. Also, his TAs grade the papers.
Edwin is clearly very passionate about what he does and is always willing to answer students questions. His lectures are never dull but be prepared to do the readings as a majority of his exams are based on text book material. If you pay attention in class, take notes and do the chapter readings, you will excel in this class.
Edwin is very funny and fun prof though he marks extremely hard and his exams are difficult. I am typically an A student and i had to work extremely and unnecessarily hard to get a B-
Professor Hodge was amazing and inspired me to switch to sociology as my major! He is very accommodating, it was no hassle at all for me to last minute request a deferral for my final due to a medical emergency. He is a really good prof that knows what he is talking about. His lectures are engaging and informative.
1. Easy to understand - his lectures are funny, concise and interesting. 2. Not a lot of assignments - exams are open book. 3. Textbook isn't free, but it's not useful. 4. Slides are clear and organized. 5. Prof has great humour and is tech savvy - and he's organized. 6. There's a paper but it's not hard if you prep for it in advance.
Dr Hodge is a very good lecturer and makes lectures entertaining. He seems to genuinely care about what he is talking about and is very respectful in talking about tough topics. He is a pretty hard grader and does not give a lot of feedback so getting an A is a challenge
Edwin was a great professor and genuinely made me want to show up to class. He's hilarious, and understanding. This class did require a significant amount of effort when it came to papers, but there was a lot of freedom with what we could write, and support provided if you sought it out. He kept his lectures interesting for the most part.
I had Edwin for 100A and 100B and he is by far my favourite professor I have had at UVic. He is extremely engaging and funny and makes even the most boring material interesting. Exams are online and open book and are easy if you take good notes and read the textbook. Would highly recommend Edwin to anyone, he is the reason I am doing a soci minor!!
Dr. Hodge is a great lecturer and can be very funny. He is good with tech and very organized, and disruptions to the schedule were handled well. Can be harsh with his guidelines, but they are at least clear. Exams ask for critical engagement with main topics of the class, understanding is more important than rote memorization. Great class overall!
Amazing lectures- and I feel like the exams were marked justly with ample opportunities to learn how to improve.
he was funny, feminist, and plugged his twitch channel. i'm amused. and really liked how lectures were accessible at any time.
A fun, passionate, engaging professor that's accomodating and caring of his students. Lectures are easy to follow, and he knows his stuff. Would most definitely take a class of his again!
This has been my favourite prof so far I love Edwin. He is so funny and the workload is a good amount. I've had two classes with him and he is really understanding and so nice, I would love to have more classes with him.
Great professor always has been!
If you're on the fence about taking Edwin, don't be. His lectures are amazing and he wants you to succeed. You have to work for your grades (duh) but his office hours are really helpful for talking through tough concepts/getting support. He's a real one.
great prof, great TA, easy and enjoyable class
I learned so much in his SOCI 100B class! Super engaging and funny prof. Also make sure you attend all classes and take lots of notes because that's all that the tests are based off of.
Discussion heavy class, lots of group discussions and participation via discussion. Lots of people like Edwin, but I really don't like his lecturing style, it's definitely not for everyone, he's a bit crass and difficult at times. Get ready to cringe.
My favourite class. He's engaging and interesting and approachable. This is the only class I consistently went to a) cause you have to and b) it's so worth your time. You do have to read the textbook but it's also interesting
Edwin is a great professor. He is very well-educated and connects well with students. He does expect a lot from students, and essays can be quite heavy. Office hours are super helpful. He rewards creativity and out of the box thinking. No tests, just essays & critical reflections in 309.
Edwin is the best sociology prof I've had yet. Almost lost my interest in my major and he brought it back. Lectures were so inspiring and he actually cares for your thoughts and opinions. As long as you engage with the theory and critically evaluate theories in the papers, you'll get a good grade. Also is extremely understanding and caring.
GPA killer. Unless you can write/work above your grade level be ready to feel disappointed in yourself and your abilities after every assignment is handed back to you. Criteria and rubrics will situate the average student at a 'minimal' or 'satisfactory level' and to earn even 'good' you need to write like a published author or graduate student! GL
Don't get me wrong, I like Edwin Hodge but it seems he enjoys making his class as hard as possible for his students. He isn't worried about the stress he creates through a lack of feedback, vague outlines, and many readings. He seems to be very resentful about "how easy University is these days" and is trying to change that through his classes.
For lower level courses Edwin's lecture style is fine and engaging, but for contemporary theory it proved to be confusing and rambling. He shows little care for students and is unwilling to accommodate or reply to emails. He gives little to no feedback on assignments (or at least does not instruct TA's to do so) and is a tough grader.
While clearly passionate for the subject, Edwin made this class almost unbearable with his constant complaining about his personal life and financial situation. No feedback was given for midterms, even when specifically requested. He did not communicate sufficiently with TA's on grading criteria and assignment details.
He does not have the bandwidth to be teaching the classes he is. He has very little time or patience for his students. Would be better suited to manage a Starbucks (his words, not mine). The TA will make or break his course as he seemingly does not grade anything.
Not cool, hard grader and annoying. Avoid at all costs
Definitely one of the best intro profs I've had: he's thorough and leaves lots of room for questions. Interesting examples make the concepts introduced in lecture easier to get a grasp of! Lots of readings, which are a big part of the exams. Funny, but a tough grader.
bro is such a yapper he makes no sense
Soci374 Will rage quit class if you don't watch unknown assigned videos
for SOCI 374 very harsh marker even typically above average students will receive a satisfactory mark, very unclear instructions and confusing feedback, be sure to go through weekly slides ahead of class and watch assigned videos because he will cancel the entire class for the day if enough people haven't watched it.
Edwin, your behavior in class today was abysmal. To assign a 1 hour lecture video on thanksgiving with ZERO notice or heads up, with the expectation that we will find it on brightspace is absurd. I emphasize ON THANKSGIVING DAY, during MIDTERM season! Swearing and storming out of class as an adult man is crazy.
He says lectures aren't mandatory, but for the exams he says you need to include content from his lectures anyway. He talks so much in his lectures, a lot of it goes off topic and it gets so confusing. The only reason I am doing good in his class is because the TA marks everything
Definitely make sure you are attending lectures: not only are they well-done and very engaging, but there is a lot of understanding you will miss if you only read the slides. Edwin is very funny, direct, and encourages student questions which he answers well. Don't love his use of Packback, as it is quite useless and costs forty dollars.
He knows what he's talking about but other than that just go for Ravelli. If Ravelli hadn't been on leave I would've picked him. Although Edwin does seem to be an agreeable guy, it all depends if you get a nice TA or not. If you get a harsh TA then you're cooked. He just yaps and yaps and yaps.
Difficult marker but clear grading rubrics Interesting lectures! Lots of readings but they're not too hard Feels like he really cares about the topics
Edwin was disappointing. None of the four assignments throughout the course included clear criteria, making the evaluation feel inconsistent and difficult. He also assigned a lecture over a holiday without proper notice. When students hadn't watched it, he swore and yelled at the class before abruptly ending class early.
Unclear assignment guidelines. The criteria and what he tells us in class are completely different. Assigns lecture video on a holiday and then yells at the everyone for not watching the video and storms out of class. Instead of apologizing he makes a joke out of it. Makes it clear that he does not care for the class or any of the students.
Hodge has really good ideas and is quite passionate about his work and what he teaches, however most lectures he ends up reading quite a bit out of the textbook. Keep on top of the weekly readings and packback and ya should be fine. And explain thoroughly your ideas on your exams.
Hodge is so funny and his lectures are amazing. Make sure to attend them or you will be lost, he posts slides but says so much more in class, and you're expected to mention them in the exams! He can be brutal but just don't ask stupid questions and you'll be good! Highly recommend this class. Beware though you have to pay extra for the textbook!
he's a nice guy and knows the material well, but thats about it. Your grade is dependent on if you get a nice TA or not. Material is easy and his lectures are funny but he's a yapper. If you get the option pick Ravelli.
GO TO CLASS, lectures arent recorded, slides are unclear without context, only include a fraction of what he talks about in class. Hodge is funny but makes it clear he does not like his job. Did not respond to me I emailed him. Exams are timed written essays, if those are difficult for you (they are for me) I would not take this class with him.
Need to buy the textbook (that he helped write) to do weekly quizzes and pay for a third party AI platform to do weekly discussions - despite Brightspace having tools for both. He does not even remotely care for his students, made abundantly clear by his "I can do anything and they won't fire me" attitude. He's funny, sometimes. Avoid at all costs
Edwin is largely directed by his personal views. States he studies "redpill" men, but "can't fathom" why anyone would listen to Joe Rogan. Asserts he would never listen to anyone speaking out of their field of expertise, yet frequently criticized other disciplines (business, compsci) because they're "saturated" and sociology is full of opportunity
why would he make 15% of grade some 40$ discussion boards?! Its so annoying and feels like he is robbing his students. Also dont forget that there is a 80$ textbook with weekly quizzes. He always curses which is in my opinion not acceptable for professor with phd. Avoid him if you dont like yappers. Tutorials are boring and silly
A lot of people either love him or absolutely hate him. I loved him! He was straight to the point and would stop to allow for questions (which he always answered well). His lectures were super engaging. If you just want to sit peace and dive into the lecture, he is a great prof for that. Only minus is the textbook and third party app, it's $$$.
I love him so much, he makes me want to show up to lectures and learn which is the biggest compliment.
It seemed like he was more interested in making a show of his expertise and humble background rather than really getting into the nuts and bolts of Sociology. It was difficult to really take what we was saying seriously because he swears quite a bit and will usually make references to his own experiences & he discusses content not on the slides.
I can see why Edwin is appreciated as a funny guy because he is definitely very laid back but he simultaneously gives off pick me energy. Made us buy a textbook and packback which was not great but the lectures were entertaining at least. Essay exams aren't too bad either.
By far my favourite course and professor. Every lecture was spent with constant note-taking, be sure to attend lectures or make friends to receive notes on lectures missed as the extent of what is said in class will not be found on posted slides! First class can be intimidating, as long as you show up and pay attention you will do well. Fun Class!
This is the easiest elective I've ever taken, only studied for midterm/final. However, don't expect to get grades back in the timeframe allocated. Final and midterm both submitted up to 2+ weeks later than scheduled date, really annoying. Had weekly question/answer you had to pay for and most people lost the point of them so they got useless too.
Lecture attendance wasn't mandatory, but lectures included key details for exams that weren't on slides. Midterm and final are both essay style with questions given in advance. Good grades required heavy details outside of the question. Packback questions were due weekly, and were incredibly boring and pointless. Lectures were funny and engaging
Edwin is a fantastic professor with a passion for teaching and sociology. However, first-year students might not like him. His courses are reading-heavy, and he expects good quality writing. He is very laidback, and very accommodating. Anyone below trashing him for first-year courses should consider taking another with him in 3rd/4th year.
The class is super interesting, but the professor's attitude really kills it. He's a great speaker and keeps you engaged, but his superiority complex and self-obsession make him hard to deal with. He acts like his class is way more important than it is and piles on way more work than needed. Is also a tough grader. Very rude man, very annoying.
Clearly passionate about sociology, but thinks he's better than teaching a first-year course. He's rude, dismissive of student input, and more focused on showing off his own knowledge than actually teaching/helping. He's all about his own ego, and it's clear he doesn't care about his students. Lecture were annoying and tutorials were unnecessary.
As someone who is on my way to be majoring in sociology, I strongly recommend Dr. Hodge. His lectures are entertaining, and as long as you keep up with the class you should get a decent final grade. Only downside is that the learning materials needed in total cost over $100, but I've found them to be quite useful, especially the textbook.
Edwin is an incredible professor, dare I say, the best one I've ever had! His lectures are engaging and interesting, his grading rubrics are very clear, his area of study is fascinating, and he keeps it real with students. His expectations are high, but if you follow the rubric and go to his office hours if you're uncertain, you will succeed!
Put some respect on my man's name. Don't listen to the students looking for someone to blame for their poor performance. Having taken 4 classes with Edwin, I can say that he does expect a certain level of effort from his students, but his expectations are reasonable. Put in some effort and you can absolutely do well. Engaging, well-spoken, friendly
Edwin is obviously quite passionate of his work and his lectures are for the most part entertaining. But, he often says that he knows how hard it is to be a university student, both the workload and the money spent - yet in order to pass this class you need to spend upwards of $100 dollars in online resources. In my opinion not worth it.
He was very biased, and not inclusive towards those he disagreed with.
class is overall really easy, he publishes the mid term and finals questions to prep before the exams. make sure you get a good ta, if you dont like your ta first week transfer to another block. easy graders overall. put in minimal effort and got an A.
Honestly one of the nicest professors I've ever had. You'll be fine if you put in the work and try in the class. Says that lectures aren't mandatory but always go because he talks about a lot of main and important concepts that he doesn't put on the slides.
Hodge is childish. He once ended it early when no one watched the video that he expected everyone to watch. Mind you, he made no mention of this video and it was meant to replace the class that took place on Thanksgiving. He became visibly upset and stormed out of class. Assignment Guidelines are unclear. Not a good prof for this course.
Engaging and approachable professor. Textbook readings are interesting, and lectures are worth attending. Consistent hard work is key, but Unstuck AI can be a helpful study companion. Overall, a great class experience.
One of the best profs I have ever had. Not as tough of a marker as some people think - just think outside the box and create interesting research. Made me want to become a full time academic!
I want to be his friend and have dinner with his family. Lectures are never boring and I grieve every time I accidentally miss one. He is my play boy carti. He's not everyone cup of tea but who is. If you like having a good time, take his lecture.
Was an overall very easy class, it almost impossible to do poorly/ not pass if you put in some time and effort. There was really no assignments besides a weekly discussion and quiz which were very straight forward and simple. However, he likes to TALK most the time being off topic and not making sense. Take if you don't want to really learn.
Chatty prof but i enjoy the tangents as they are great for critical thinking and application. I think he gets a harder time on here than deserved
Edwin can be a tough marker, and the first class I took with him thoroughly humbled me. But I've taken 3 or 4 classes with him, and I can confidently say I'm better for it. He taught me how to write a good lit review (which I've been complimented on by other profs) and GOOD papers that actually meaningfully contribute to academic conversation.
Dr. Hodge is a really interesting guy to listen to, but he is very cynical. Cheer up pls
I hated him for the first 2 weeks then learned to love him. It's barely necessary to attend the lectures because he gives the exam questions a week before and you can just lock in on those concepts ESPECIALLY in 100B. Although I would recommend going to lectures cause I found them entertaining and his lore is so funny (and sometimes tragic).
Don't know if it's him or the TA but tough grader. Good luck
Funny and engaging lecturer who explains concepts very well, and interesting assignments. Feedback for the midterm was rather confusing but he changed the final format to adapt which I appreciated. However, in my experience horrible at replying to emails which can be frustrating. Despite this I would highly recommend Edwin as a prof!
Was very open to answering student questions, explained course concept's in detail, was humorous (but sometimes apathetic) and understanding of the student experience. When the class didn't do great on the midterm, adapted the study guide format for the final to help us, but could have provided more guidance in the first place (+ for the paper)
