Don't take his class if you don't need it or there is no other speech 4. Too many works on paper. You buy the book that you don't need it because he will give you his lecture note. This class spent too much time on paper and plan a speech instead of just talking. I don't really enjoy it.
awesome teacher. you had to study and try hard but its def worth it in the end. Hes a great guy who can take a joke and is always there to help u succeed in the class. just show up and READ the BOOK!!! i had to study for this class and i didnt mind. having a class twice a week with this teachewr was worth it. a definitely great teacher.
I was a little intimidated at first with this class because I am not a big fan of getting up in front of the class. Ed made this class fun and I actually enjoyed going to class in the end. Participation is worth over half the grade so you have to speak up if you want to pass. There is a method to his madness haha.
Ed is a really fun and well educated professor. I hate public speaking, but he mad it a little more comfortable then usual. His tests and quizes aren't as easy as you might think they would be, so read each chapter twice, seriously!!! This class was a lot of fun to go to, but it was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken.I worked hard for a C!
Ed is a good professor. do not go out and buy the book for his class. he suplies his own "survivleguide" to the class that will help you thought out the who semester. if you wnat to fail the class then attendance is not maditory but on day that you dont speak you will take notes on the other speaker. I have improved since the I beggan in his class.
This class was fun and he does a good job of engaging the class but he never gives good scores on speeche and outlines are never made clear you tend to put way more effort into your outline than speech. good thing though is hes easy to get ahold of to ask questions, i would look into other classes though
Interesting guy. Tips: PARTICIPATE IN CLASS! (It could make or break you). Do not wait until the last minute to do assignments (he will know and will not hesitate to tear you apart for it!) Just keep up on the assignments because he gives them all to you ahead of time. Also take note on your quizes because they are the same questions on the tests.
I loved this class and this professor. His class is realy interesting and participate is very important. In fact, if you don't participate, you don't pass the class. I really loved Ed Reed, one of the best C.O.D. professors.
I took Intercultural Speech with him. Ed Reed is one of the best professors at COD. He is humorous, demanding, challenging but most of all interesting. He encourages participation, which he uses to base your final grade on. Most of all, he wants to see that you are having fun in class! Always great to come prepared for class, because he always is.
Before taking this class I dreaded standing up in front of a room full of people. Ed Reed was the best person to help me get rid of my stage fright. He made the three hour class so easy to get through with his humor and engaging personality. Take this class if you are willing to work hard for your grade though. He grades tough but its worth it!
ed is a hard ass teacher! if you are not too scared of public speaking already and you don't mind doing a bunch of writing along with your speeches then go for it. ed is a great guy, don't get me wrong! i liked him, but his class was hard, i saw a LOT of people drop out. there are easier ways to learn speech...(other teachers)
Participation is the most important part of your grade in this class, be involved in all of his discussions and do your assignments(only assigns a few) on time. also start ur final presenation project early and pratice it. overall a decent professor, but had a bad attitude in class sometimes.
A very intellegent teacher that is awesome to listen to. He is very helpfull and gives enough responsibility so that you will learn but does not overwhelm you with homework. I took INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS WITH REED.
One of the best teachers at COD. He has now written a text book for Sp 04. Congratulations Ed! I loved you Intercultural Communication class!
Ed, is a great teacher. Participation is everything in the class, and you will need to read the chapters cause there is a quiz every week. He was extremely helpful to me in the final project, which is a ten minute presentation and a lot of work. Ed can come off as snippy sometimes in class, and its a lot of work, but worth it in my opinion.
Participation is mandatory, and Ed makes this perfectly clear on the first day of class--if you don't speak up during class, you will fail the course. There are semi-weekly quizzes on the chapters covered--cake walk. The class builds up to the individual presentation on choice topic. It's considered the hardest class but if you do the work easy A.
If you have to take a communications class, DON'T TAKE THIS GUY. In fact after seeing what other people wrote and those curious "under review" ones, I'd say the egotistical guy is flagging negative reviews. Your 8 minute presentation @ the end of the semester is worth 60% of your grade. You MUST participate everyday in class to get those other 40%
I took Ed for Public Speaking. He's extremely opinionated to the point where you feel like you're being critiqued by Simon on American Idol. NOT PLEASANT I spent a lot of money and time on this class and concluded that he could have taught in a better way. If you're planning on taking pub. spkg...find another professor! I did pass though, It's over
DON'T TAKE HIM. HE HAS HIS FAVORITES STUDENTS ON CLASS. NO MATTER HOW MUCH EFFORT YOU POU ON YOUR ASSIGNMENT, IOF HE DOSENT LIKE YOU, HE WILL BARELLY GIVE YOU A C. IF YOU RESPECT YOURSELF, DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS I DID. I AM A STRAIGHT A STUDENT, HE IS MY FIRST B.
teahcer was terrible at replying to students and only thought about himself.
after reading everyone's comments about Ed I was nervous to take his class.H onestly it is the only class I've taken at COD that I reccommend. Ed is an amazing teacher who knows what he is talking about and takes time to work with you. He doesnt put up with B.S and i think thats why people dont like him because they cant get away with stupid stuff.
I took Public Speaking and it was great. I recommend him to everyone. Yes, he can be a butt but, he knows his stuff. I enjoyed the class and at first it was hard but, doing several speech on his format was easy. The way he judges helped me do better. I just didn't like the final test, that was lame for a speaking class. Take him!
Great professor. Very engaging class! One of the best at COD. He has high expectations and can be tough at times, but pushes you to be better. Highly recommended!
This Instructor is really professional, but all that scare me because i am just afraid of his class. I really hate to go in front of the class and speak. To me he is not flexible. And he grades very strict. Therefore, if I would have the chance to choose some other instructor, I will, but who knows, the other will be = so I will stay in Ed's class.
MR. Reed is very strict. There is no flexibility in this class whatsoever. Don't bother having an opinion unless its you agreeing with him... Don't take his classes. Wait a semester if you have to in order to get a different professor! Don't fall for his nice first impression it doesn't last...
Make sure you refer to him as Mr. Reed or Professor Reed, he does not approve of being called Ed. He is very intimidating and does not help you feel comfortable with voicing your opinion. You may think he is nice when you first meet him but he will change! Very strict, and unreasonable. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
IF PUBLIC SPEAKING IS YOUR LIFE AND YOU PLAN IN MAJORING IN IT THEN ED IS GREAT. IF YOU ARE TAKING THIS TO MEET REQUIREMENTS, DO NOT TAKE ED. HE IS VERY STRICT YET UNCLEAR AND DOES NOT FOLLOW HIS SYLLABUS. ED MAKES YOU HATE PUBLIC SPEAKING, AND LIFE IS HELL WHILE ENROLLED.
Ed makes the Speech class fun and it is really easy to pay attention in his class. I agree that he is very strict with his Speech assignments and you have to do them perfectly in order to get a good grade on them. If you are shy, this class is quite difficult, but you do learn a lot.He can be quite rude at times and has zero tolerance for slackers.
VERY strict with all his assignments-even if you turned in an assignment on time, if it was in the wrong format or didn't have the right indentations, NO CREDIT! The class is only an elective and he gives out as much work as if it is a graduate class. I had just as much h.w for this class as my chem class-not cool. Don't take this class if your shy
I found this teacher to extremely condescending to several of his student. While I never had a direct problem with him myself I witnessed this behaviour on an almost daily basis. After six years of post secondary schooling at one of the best universities in the world. I feel confident that I can spot a good prof. Unfortunately this teacher is not.
Read the book! You can't go wrong! If you follow his rules you will do fine! People say he is hard because you have to apply yourself. You will leave his class with confidence and great communication skills! Don't be afraid to talk to him! He wants you to do well!
He is very strict and like assignments formatted in a particular way. The book that he wrote (by the way) is very helpful and there are examples to go by. He really does want you to do well, but is a very tough grader. I am an A student and this was a tough class to get an A in. He has a good sense of humor, but only if you are a motivated student
Ohh My Goodness. The first 2 weeks were scary. I didn't know if to drop or stay. I am not a quitter,so I stuck it threw. He can be strict and hard on his assignments, but he just wants you to break out of your shell, which is what I did. Reed helped me a lot with my communication skills. I'm glad I stayed in his class.
He was a cool teacher, you got to give power points and teach the class about something new and he gives his feed back! The speaking part was easy as long as you did research on your project and you knew what your talking about and you will do fine. ALL test where group test! and there was NO final!Fun teacher to take!
Ed is a great guy. His class is not easy, but he is always available to help his students. The truth is, whatever grade you received from him, you earned.
Great teacher, but he's really tough on grading!
Ed is a cool teacher but you have to participate in order to get full points! I got a C in his class and most of those points that i lost were from participation. One midterm and a final, plus group presentations. Good luck!
A lot of work assignments. Took the hybrid class, he is cool but be prepared to do a lot of work. Not very easy on grading.
His daily desperate attempts to be funny and relatable die quickly. He spends more time making jokes than actually clarifying what it is we're doing. Don't mistake this for easiness he is so anal retentive. Not helpful at all when it comes to answering questions. Leaves no room for creativity and most of his assignments are absolutely useless
Good teacher. He is not easy on grading. If you do all the assignments you will get a good grade. You cannot miss class because he gives participation points. If you do not attend class you get 0 points in participation.
Would not take him. You must come to every class and TALK every class to get your points. HUGE presentation at the end of semester, puts you into groups of 6 people which is hard work to coordinate. Not an easy class, hard work to get a B and very very critical. Funny guy, but rude.
He is very opinionated. He will not take wrong answers so if you don't have the right answer don't say anything, but he will call on you at random, though. Reading the book is VERY important because he calls on you to participate in class. He knows his stuff and he expects you to know it as well...
My opinion is Professor Reed is an excellent teacher. This is why. You will leave his class and know you have learned something. Is his test hard? Yes. Does he require you to get your moneys worth out of a class? Yes. Does he expect you to be alert in class? Yes. In my opinion, he wants you to learn something whether its just about yourself.
Reed is good at teaching the various parts of speak and you'l definitely get something out of the class. Reed does a poor job of holding everyones presentation to the same standard. Grading is hard and he's very picky and makes rude and inappropriate comments to students who don't agree with him during discussions. Advice: take class w/ some else.
A class worth taking; Reed's class inspired me to embrace my own cultural heritage and understand the perspectives of other cultures. Although, a difficult instructor, he is very fair and expects you to pass. Definitely one of the most cooperative instructors, thus participation is a must!
Really hard teacher! expects you to do everything his way some students got better grades than others without doing much! you have to do a midterm which is really hard and confusing and a final also confusing and a presentation which he grades some students better than others. take with someone else!!!
I love Ed's class! It's definitely not a class you can slack off in. He requires the outlinesspeeches to be organized very specifically. But he's hilarious, he's always willing to help you, and you definitely become a better public speaker after taking his class. Definitely keep up with the assignments, and don't miss class! Overall, a fun class.
DON'T TAKE!!!! He's so rude and doesn't grade fairly! Worst professor and all he does it eat carrots and make fun of you in class. AVOID!!!!!!
The class was interesting. Participation is graded every class. There is a group project in the end that affects your grade, but is difficult to handle as a group. Just make sure you guys get everything done early. The midterm & final are tough if you do not study.
Pay attention to lectures. Do not skip out on class. Participation is must in this class. Ed is a fair teacher with grading and assignments.
Ed is a wonderful Speech instructor. Since this is SPEECH class-participation is a must. I took this class in three weeks (Winter session) -it was hard and tiring but Ed was there for his student. He was helpful, gives good feedback, very energetic, he was humorous but also dedicated. So thank you so much Ed! That Winter class was the best!
ED Reed is a very inspirational teacher, at the beginning of his class I must admit I was intimidated, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, the intimidation helped me prove myself to do the work that was expected from me. I would definitely say that this is a class that requires work but at the end is very well worth it.
exams feel like my calculus class. tough grader. his "perception" is how ur graded on speaking the "right" way. avoid if possible. large homework load. four 100 question exams, that are difficult. better options for public speaking at the school. can be rude. rarely helpful. "does not repeat himself". Not an understanding teacher.
for lack of better words, worst professor I've had at college of the desert
At the beginning I tought it would be a great class with a funny person, but unfortunately he was very rude to many students, including me. AVOID.
This guy makes a speech class a nightmare. He's funny but very rude, and doesn't give out A's unless you work super hard and are naturally a good speaker. Harsh grading and made me feel nervous and uncomfortable when speaking. Also doesn't give credit if you show up but don't speak that class (even if you have nothing to say). No thanks.
Reed is an amazing instructor. If you are a sensitive person, then you aren't ready to be an adult. Do exactly what he asks of you, and you won't have a problem, simple directions. Come to class and do your work, you'll pass. Not an easy A, but I appreciate that. The templates he hands out could not make work any simpler. It truly is a fun class
Ed is an awesome person but don't get under his bad side. He's a tough grader but what can you expect is college he's preparing you. You must speak or you will not pass the class. Love Ed would definitely take again!
I was terrified of taking this class with Ed because of the reviews, but boy was I wrong! Ed was great! and hilarious, he is VERY honest with his critiques but only because he wants to thoroughly prepare you for your speeches, hello people this is college not HS anymore. This class is definitely not for slackers, or the faint of heart ;)
Take someone else and get an A. Or work your but off for a B and feel insulted every time you speak to the guy. He does not treat his students with respect, more like an annoyance. He is a funny guy, but a teacher who will make you feel uncomfortable in an already awkward situation.. There are far better teachers.
Ed is the best! It's not a hard class to pass, you just have to put effort into it. Show up on time, complete homework given (minimal), participate, and study. He treats you like a college student. Easily the best speech teacher at COD.
No, he's not easy, in fact he is way too difficult for a public speaking class but, his jokes are not inappropriate like others say, just immature teens not ready for the real world. Work hard and you will pass. He gives good extra credit. Very strict but, and A is not impossible. I worked my ass off and got one. hes just passionate about speech.
This was easily one of the hardest instructors I have ever had, but also the most impacting. With hard work, comes great payoffs. I have never been instructed so well about public speaking before. I received an A. I leveled up, and feel ready to take on the world. I only recommend this class for those that actually try their best. Shine bright.
Really enjoyed this professor. He's tough, but he gives lots of feedback. It's a speech course--I don't know why all these people are complaining about having to give a speech lol.
Ed is an enthusiastic teacher and it was very easy to talk to him. He adds humor to his lectures to make us all feel comfortable. Class was very difficult, but I learned a lot and improved a great deal as a public speaker.
I have taken two classes with this instructor and I've learned nothing. His lectures are from the book and he doesn't seem to care if you actually learn. It seems he's mostly there for himself. No help after class. The tests do not match what he or the book says. He tries to be funny but he's not. The classes were a waste.
Sure Ed is very tough so don't take this class thinking it will be a blow. He really knows what he's talking about and was always available after class for help.
I was scared by the online reviews but Ed was great! Take him if you never want to fall asleep during class. Always cool videos, interactive stuff in class, and great chance to interact with others. Loved his interpersonal class.
First and foremost I can say that I have learned a lot in this class. It is one of the courses I enjoyed the most. His handwriting is really hard to read lol!
Honestly I read these critiques and I wonder if people are even talking about the same professor. Ed is challenging, but you really work with other students in the class to build support network to help you get even better. I wouldn't have wanted to take any other professor. Ed is the best!
Really enjoyed public speaking with Ed. He is a tough grader, but he gives really great feedback, and will help you improve throughout the semester. Your effort will reflect your grade, of course you will receive a poor grade if you slap something together last minute. Loved his personality, the class was really fun.
He makes you work for your grade, but if you really push yourself you'll love him as a professor. He is the most caring and understanding professor. Great lectures, never bored. Def Recommend
I was able to learn so much from him. He gives great feedback on any presentations you do in class. Hes clear on what he expects from the course. Participation is definitely a must, but his classes and the work he assigns are pretty interesting so it shouldnt be difficult. If youwant to get better, take classes with this prof, you wont regret it
TO BE FAIR PUBLIC SPEAKING ISN'T EASY FOR ALL OF US. AND HE KNOWS IT. WHAT I REALLY ENJOYED ABOUT HIM WAS THAT HE MADE US COMFORTABLE. WITH ALL HIS LECTURES, STORIES, AND EXAMPLES (HOW WE USE IT ON THE DAILY) YOU LEARN A LOT. HE IS A TOUGH GRADER, GIVES FEEDBACK ON EVERYTHING!!! BUT I WILL TAKE HIM AGAIN IF IT IS POSSIBLE. YOU'LL LEARN A LOT.
Ed is definitely a good teacher if you are looking to gain knowledge regarding public speaking and methods of communication. However, he is very critical, and specific when it comes to presentations. This class was great in allowing myself to be more aware and open of what's going on in the world.
Great guy and a lot of fun. Online homework, easy enough. To speech projects with plenty of time to work on them. gives lots of help and great tips. super sweet and smart
Ed is the most inspirational professor I've ever had. His class does require a lot of effort but you wont even mind doing it because the class is so fun. He doesn't hand out extra credit very often so when he does you gotta jump on the opportunity! His class will feel very rewarding when it is done.
You won't survive if you don't do well on the 2 presentations that he made us do. Even your outline for your presentation has to be perfect according to his style guidelines. Sorry Ed, you're rough. Gave us the midterm like 3 weeks in. Only 2 tests (midterm and final). Not many grades he gives out.
I am comfortable with public speaking, but in previous courses, I wasn't feeling challenged. Ed's course challenged me and pushed me to become a better public speaker. I honestly have no idea why people are complaining about him being mean or a tough grader. Just do the work and base it off the criteria he gives you. He is a real gem at COD.
Be ready to get criticized due to not being perfect at speeches. He is humorous to a point. His standards for this class are too high. His reviews are sometimes not fair and instead of critiquing so much he needs to lecture better, and not show videos of himself when he was in college. If you need to take public speaking, beware of this professor.
I had a really tough time in this class, as a shy/introverted person. I tried my best, but ultimately I didn't make too much progress. Ed is a very tough grader, and I've heard it's a lot tougher than a comm001 should be. My suggestion? Take another professor...
Very tough grader. Intercultural communications class was almost entirely dependent upon two presentations. I was not aware that intercultural communications, a class I thought would be introductory, would turn into a public speaking class. Midterm and final exams were also difficult. Many of the assignments had unclear directions.
Not many assignments, each one takes forever, and is very important. He is not afraid to drop you for absences. Hard class, you definitely need to put your hours in.
I was looking forward to the course, but after the first speech I was ready to drop it because of the instructor. Ed Reed criticizes to the point of humiliation and does so in front of the whole class. His feedback isn't meant to help. You really to develop a tough skin to withstand his criticism. Its all about him. I'm surprised I got a B.
If you, like me, were looking for a class just to get the requirement out of the way, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Each assignment is very difficult, grades the outlines (??? why grade an outline?). If you get him frustrated, he is VERY rude. Gave us a final exam on a book we were only required to read once. There's better teachers. Worked my butt off.
Ed is a tougher grader than most other professors I've had at COD, he gives very clear instructions about what he wants although you have to work for an A, it is definitely a helpful class for improving communication skills. Ed himself is hilarious and I was never bored in his lectures. He was also very caring.
Mr. Reed is truly an amazing professor. He gives great feedback on the presentations that we did in class. His lectures are so inspirational, the way he is able to teach how to captivate an audience, as well as the do's and don'ts. I was so inspired i changed my B.A from linguistics to applied communication. The world needs more teachers like him.
If you are looking to optimize your public speaking, then Ed Reed is your guy! ) Most of the work involves you preparing for the three major speeches within the semester. He is a tough grader, but I am a MUCH more confident speaker thanks to him! So if you don't feel the need to challenge yourself and just need a passing grade, try someone else.
Ed Reed can be very intimidating as he is a very confident professor. He is passionate about speech and throws you into day 1. He is a great speaker and wants you to become one too and is reasonable of you do the work and show up you won't have any issues. He is available throughout for questions and gives great feedback.
I took Public Speaking because it sounded interesting only to realize after taking the class that it is one of the most important classes anyone can take. Professor Reed provides great feedback that is geared towards helping you make corrections that will improve your skills. His wit/humor makes the class very enjoyable and is a fabulous speaker.
i had him for public speaking Fall 2020. He gives great feedback. Clear on what he wants us to do and what he grades us on. Hes a tough grader. We had 4 major speeches. Good teacher.
Absolutely loved this professor! He really cares about his students and job. He is very understanding and works with you. He also makes the class enjoyable with his humor and life relatable personality. Class was online but he is very organized. About 3 major speeches he well prepares you for. Not very much hw, easy discuss posts, few major exams
Hes very strict with outlines and gives weekly quizzes that are heavy on the trick questions. He makes the class way more tougher and extensive than it should be.
Professor Reed is very hands on. He cares for his students and really wants them to pass. I didnt perform an assignment correctly and he reached out and met with me 3 times until i got it right which i thought was great! Hes funny and super nice making the class easier especially on a subject such as public speaking.
I felt Ed's grading is way too rigorous for a 3-credit course. Beware he is very much a stickler, he does give good feedback but also he does nitpick any little thing on your speech videos. Would I take his class again? That would be a hard pass.
"Interpersonal Communication" with Reed is just public speaking with a different book. Gives useless feedback designed to make you feel bad instead of educated and inflates his ego. Don't take Reed if you display neurodivergence; he has no empathy (his words!) and seems to get offended if you ask questions. He will cancel class to take a vacation.
The class was easy, the instructor was the problem. Rates and berates students in front of class. No "empathy". His text, which he wrote, is a joke. Look elsewhere.
He gives a lot of homework that, in the end, does not give you much credit for. I did all my homework except for one outline that I did turn in but was not to his liking. I got a 0 on that outline, dropping my grade to a C+. His grading is different, and if you take this class, make sure to do your outlines and speeches; the rest doesn't matter.
Ed is a tough but fair grader. He definitely wants the best from you and will accept no less. He is going to give you confidence but expects you to do the work.
The class is easy, it's the prof that's the issue. His very egotistical and will put you down. You're supposed to be nervous when you give a speech, but you were more nervous for his critique, as he will find any little thing to judge you on. Never would take this class again because of him. I'm sure any other professor in COMM is better than this.
