so nice and helpful, very sweet, and very very understandable - assignments aren't too hard and there is no final in the class
Very clear lectures, very helpful - gave extensions a few times, canceled class towards the end of the semester to give time to work on the essay.
SO EASY! As an IDS student fulfilling my Econ 314 requirement, I was lucky to have her. She made everything really easy, graded extremely fairly, and always available to answer questions. She is worth having. Gave a practice midterm online, and barely changed it for the real thing. Easy easy easy!
This prof is helpful outside of class, and is lenient in terms of deadlines. Lectureswere all available as recordings and though I hate watching lectures online, hers were very tolerable to watch and her explanations are easy to understand. However, she does draw diagrams in class that you wont be able to see if you just watch recordings online
Best Prof for 314, and an easy A! A must 300 level course (with her)
Terrible lecturer, her slides have paragraphs of text on them and she speaks incredibly fast. You hardly have time to take notes on the slides before she's done reading directly off her paragraph slides and onto the next slide. That being said, exams are fair, beware of a 50% midterm and final though.
Lectures are fast. She talks fast. However, do study the material presented and you will do well. Essays are easy as long as you have a CLEAR DIRECTION. Economic analysis for the papers are quite amateur so you can kinda BS your way through. Easy A if you try.
Professor Choudhury is fabulously thorough, and prioritizes her students first and foremost. She constantly checks to make sure that the students are adequately understanding the material, and is happy to explain anything that may be unclear. She is also adorable and you will have a great time listening to her cute jokes. Really interesting course.
This is an easy class. The format of the class is the following : midterm + 2 papers. Going to lectures is useless, just read the power points she posts online. The post midterm material is irrelevant to the papers so don't even bother reading the lectures slides. If you spend a lot of time on your papers, you will easily get good grades! Good luck
Easy course, easy midterm, easy marks on paper. Without going lectures, It only took 4 full days in total to get an A- for entire course.
Eesha's course is extremely easy and going to class is not necessary. Listen to her lectures but read the textbook for a good grade. Exams are pure memorizing. Make sure you state the assumptions for the econ model so you may lose a lot of marks on the exams. Basically, just write as much buzzwords as you can on the exams.
Took it as a summer class, i mostly watched lecture recordings at 1.5X speed, and filled in some blanks from textbook. Read slides, listen to lectures once, and STUDY THE PRACTICE MIDTERMS/ASSIGNMENTS! They were essentially identical as the practice ones. Easy A. Somewhat interesting material though quite broad...
Eesha Sen is an AMAZING prof, so amazing that I took both her courses on economic development. (ECON 313 and 314) Gradingexams are fair. Lectures are recorded which is a huge plus, also she puts detailed powerpoints online too. I barely read out of the textbook and still got an A for both courses. I learnt a lot too! Highly recommended!
Eesha is a good lecturer and she has lots of a witty jokes about economics, and I thoroughly enjoyed her lectures However, I DO NOT recommend her Econ 313 to anyone who's looking for a GPA boost or as an elective. This course is NOT a bird course. Very tough grader, the class average in fall,2014 class is 60%.
Honestly not the best lecturer cuz she talks very fast but definitely a nice person. For sure one of the prof that wants her students to get good grades. The whole class did poorly for the midterm so she changed the grading scheme to save all of us :)
Stopped attending because you learn more from the textbook than you do from her.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Only 208 prof that doesn't weight your final more heavily if you perform poorly on the midterm. Also told us that the final would be 50% pre-midterm material and 50% post-midterm material which was completely false. Not helpful at all, and impossible to understand. AVOID
Great prof for this course if you have never done Econ before. Explains problems and math well. If you go to lectures, the text book is not necessary, especially since she will go through some problems from the study guide with the class.
Does not really support students. Tough grader. Lectures are pretty boring, with an attendance rate of about 40%.... I really don't recommend her. Really not helpful, and makes fun of students' mistakes in class...
Take ECON 313 or 314 with her in Summer. It's a lot easier than it is throughout a regular semester.
This class was a bore. Eesha takes all of her material directly from the required book. I stopped attending classes after the first couple weeks, the book being sufficient to get a B+ in this class. Not only is her way of teaching boring, Eesha is extremely unclear. To top things off, the midterm and final are both worth 50% (and cumulative!)
Prof Choudhury is sweet and wants her students to succeed. Midterm (40%) and 2 papers (60%). Midterm is tough as the material covered is quite difficult, but overall the exam was fair. Papers are choice of 3 questions, as long as your thesis makes sense and you have good data you will not do poorly. I do think she is probably the best 314 prof.
Eesha is clear and helpful. She wants you do well. I would recommend her for anyone taking ECON 314. The midterm was extremely straight forward, although you do have to practice a lot to do well. The second half of the course there is two papers assigned, so going to class is pointless at this point on. Great overall experience! Also NO FINAL !
Kicks students out of office, lectures unclear, & assignment/exam questions are unclear and have faulty assumptions. Exams look SUPER similar to practices/assignments, so do them! MUST do diagrams her way. DEFINITELY go review your exams 'cause she'll just *miss* points sometimes; go challenge it, you're not the first. Get a tutor and study groups!
Straight forward, interesting class with fair examinations. Go to office hours, and she will help you a great deal. One of the best profs I've had since coming to McGill! Also practice the assignments, ESPECIALLY THE NUMERICAL QUESTIONS. For models, always STATE ALL THE ASSUMPTIONS and DRAW THE DIAGRAMS or else you'll LOSE ALOT OF MARKS. good luck!
Great professor, very clear. She wants you to do well - lectures are recorded, assigns optional practice assignments, holds pre-exam review sessions, and the textbook is great if you didn't understand something in class - otherwise it's optional. The material's interesting and it's not a lot of work (just midterm/final).
It is not necessary to attend her class since all her lectures are available online. Her test/exam are very straight forward. One Midterm and final each 50%. To get an easy A all you have to do is learn the material from the lecture recording thoroughly, thats it. Would highly recommend taking her class, she makes Econ 313 really easy.
I had Prof. Choudhury for ECON 208, 313 and 314. I found it hard to follow through in class but when watching the recorded lectures I though she explained concepts incredibly well. Not going to lie, I worked a lot for all these classes.
She's hard to understand and her Micro midterm was hard for an intro course but 313 exam was not bad for a 300 level. She tries to help you but gets frustrated easily during office hours. But read the textbook (in depth) if you want above a c+.
Can't understand and says correct??? every 2 minutes. I wouldn't know it it's correct because she doesn't explain well and only draws graphs that mean nothing to me when reviewing them. Gonna likely start showing up to a teacher who knows how to teach
honestly, she explains really well as long as you pay attention in class. she's very helpful if you have any specific questions and actually offers tutorial questions/answers and past midterms/finals on the moodle page. additional reading is only necessary if you do not fully grasp her explanations and examples in class.
Going to class is useless since we don't understand a word she says. She +/- reads the slides but not in the good order. TA left in Ottawa with our midterms, didn't give any information about how to get them back. 2 papers, you have to submit the second one 2 weeks after the 1st (without having received any feedback).
Eesha is a great prof. She can be hard to understand at the beginning because she does have a strong accent but u'll get use to it. BE CAREFUL, the midterm is worth 40% of your grade and it's graded very harshly ON PURPOSE so be as detailed as possible (like really really really detailed) and ask for previous midterms because they are the same
Super hard to understand and her lectures are a mess (doesn't use her ppw and just draws random graphs like what?!?). Her TAs are super harsh markers and she legit doesn't care if they have different averages so your GPA may suffer depending on who marks. STUDY FOR THE MIDTERM - she requires really specific details and average is always super low
Prof is rude and acts like she's doing you a favour by simply responding to emails. She relied on a TA in Ottawa who takes upwards of a week to get back to you, just to brush you off in the end. On top of that, he had the gall to be a harsh marker when he refuses to offer any feedback whatsoever. Prof was no help when contacted about this issue.
Prof is a smart and knowledgeable woman. She was helpful and available if you went to her office hours. However, this class was an absolute nightmare. TAs were hell (see other comments) and toward the end of the term she was unavailable bc she didnt have office hours anymore. i worked super hard for this class and my marks did NOT show it
She knows the subjects she's teaching very well. However, she doesn't make any efforts to make sure students understand what she's teaching. Her handwritten notes are really hard to understand in class, which makes it difficult to follow. Also, you can't keep saying "is this alright" and move on without checking whether it's actually alright.
She can teach well sometimes. But shes not at the same pace with the slides. Its really easy to get lost because of her handwriting and accent, and you cannot find immediately where shes talking! Study this course mostly by self-reading and self-practicing
This teacher is awesome! Some ppl may find her accent hard to understand, but if you sit in front and do an effort to pay attention, youll see that she knows her subject extremely well and explains very well. She isnt a tough grader at all. Perhaps, read the textbook!! Going to class is not enough to get good grades in this class
Worst teacher - most people don't come to class and just learn from the book by themselves. Will not follow slides, and goes off on a lot of tangents. Also, her accent makes her difficult to understand, and she's not a strong lecturer. Fair exams, but basically have to teach yourself the whole course. Would not recommend.
She is really fair, helpful, and caring. You really just have to go to class, do the study guide, go to her office, and you will get at least an A-. I am taking her ECON313 right now in summer. She is very clear and eloquent. Her lectures may seem boring and disorganized for some people, but honestly, you can follow if you concentrate. Good prof
One of my favourite economic's courses taken at McGill! I was shocked to see she had such poor reviews on here. She is a really good lecturer. The models require you to read at home and ideally before the lecture. If you do that, or even put in a bit of your own work instead of rely on her to spoon food you, you will understand!
she's a terrible prof. Her lectures are difficult to follow and filled with tangents. She also doesn't fully understand how to use a doc cam and never shows us her work. For doing well in this course I'd suggest doing multiple practice problems in the workbook and trying to teach yourself or get a tutor because eesha won't do things to help you
Terrible professor. It makes me feel bad to say that cause she seems like she's nice, maybe on a good day, but her class was an absolute nightmare. She expected us to do regressions and perform all this crazy advanced econometrics stuff or else you would straight up get a 50, even if the paper is good. Her midterm was impossible and unfair. AVOID.
- difficult to follow because she goes on unrelated tangents - does not use the document camera for the lecture recordings - focuses a lot on irrelevant material (which is not tested) - incomplete syllabus - very poor guidelines for the written papers (really BAD! the question itself was convoluted and unclear on what she expected, no rubric)
The written papers were absolutely horrendous, as was the midterm. The guidelines were incomplete yet she would take points off on things not included in those guidelines (she provided no rubric for the papers!) etc... lectures went into tangents and often were incomprehensible. she seems like a nice person, but avoid this class at all costs.
Eesha's classes are all engaging and she does a really good job explaining the content and asking if people are following, even in a big course like 313. Her midterm was extremely demanding and no one finished, average was close to a fail. Final was very very easy to compensate. Do all the practise/assignments, go to every class, study early.
More robot than a teacher. Speaks quickly. Boring lecturer. Avoid if you can.
Eesha is hands down one of the best Econ professors I've had in McGill. ECON 313 with her is one of the most fulfilling courses I have taken. Agreed, she talks fast during lectures but all of her lectures are recorded so you can watch them at home. She describes concepts so clearly. Her midterm and exam are super fair, you just have to work hard.
Sb the worst teach ever
I don't go to class but I listen to every recorded lecture online, because she tends to go fast. However, if you listen at your own pace, she explains things very clearly and is one of the best econ profs at mcgill. She also gives a lot of practice that helps on exams. Love her.
I went to all her classes but always found myself tuning out. I wouldn't say she is a bad teacher but found it was easier to take notes from the textbook and use the online platform to do practice questions - not worth waking up early for her class. The class did spark my interest in minoring in econ, but due to my own dedication, not her teaching.
least favorite econ prof at McGill. Exams are not fair. while other profs tend to reduce the materials for the exam due to the current pandemic, she would make students suffer more by giving us the worst final exam ever (10-12hrs to finish) because it's an open-book exam now.
AVOID AT ALL COST
One midterm - one final. Very tough class. Prof. Choudhury is not very accessible outside of class (although she does respond to emails promptly) and does not explain the material well. Seeing as its already difficult to get, adding to that a mediocre prof, you're screwed unless you work really hard.
Only 2 hours given for a tough online midterm. Some questions in the exam are really confusing people.
Well, if you like taking a class with a prof that seems to hate teaching and that could not care less about her students success, then this is for you! Eesha is a harsh grader, difficult to understand when speaking and she will never recognize her responsibility upon making a mistake. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Lectures were fine but tests and papers were graded harshly. I learnt a lot from the course but it was not easy to do well with the harsh and ambiguous grading scales.
The class is very test heavy and in general was much harder than her assignments and past exams. Would not take again
Avoid.
She is literally the worst professor I've ever had. Avoid taking classes with her at all cost, she is absolutely horrible.
she is hands down the worst instructor ive ever had in 14 years of schooling. its actually impressive how bad she is at lecturing - she goes so fast, rly hard to understand, seems to have no interest in the topic. she told us in advance that everyone fails the midterm - maybe make it easier then?? class is rly difficult too. AVOID AVOID
Did not listen to her lectures i only read the textbook because she is impossible to understand. She does not want her students to succeed and when we asked for an extension on a 10 page paper we had to do 2 weeks after the midterm she was super passive agressive
Graded by only a midterm + final. Midterm was not given nearly enough time and there few only a few questions, which were graded very harshly. few practice problems were given and there was no practice final. speaks SO FAST. Will spend hours on useless topics then zoom through important stuff. does care about students tho. WOULD NEVER TAKE AGAIN
I took ECON208 in the fall with her and had an overall good experience. This is not the professor you want if you are new to econ as she goes very fast and likes to overcomplicate things. Also our only grades were the midterm and final so you can't mess up.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I had to take her three times. She speaks too fast and is confusing. I never attended lectures for that reason. I just read the textbook. She decided the day we had to submit our last essay to remove the late penalty all that to reinstate it 4 days later when it would of been -20%. I never write reviews but I felt it necessary.
Sometimes not the most clear teacher, but she is always ready to clarify or re-explain. Showing up to lecture and taking good notes, especially when she draws graphs or calculations, is the key to doing well.
No clue why she is rated so low. She was very helpful during her office hours and helped me a lot preparing for the midterm. She also has a ton of practice problems review material. She also took pictures from the study guide so we don't have to buy it. Her exams are fair and reflect the material taught in class.
Probably the most unintuitive explanations you will ever receive from a prof. Its hard to tell whether she is genuinely bad at explaining or whether its out of spite for students. Her expectations were often unclear and she did not offer much guidance in terms of how to prepare for assessments. I would not take another class with her.
I was nervous to take her class because of some of the other reviews she is actually really good and would take again. She explained the topics well and was always willing to answer questions throughout the lecture if needed. Basically everything she says is out the textbook. The tests were easy and fair but you have to do some math(mostly precalc)
I've never had such an unaccommodating professor. Many students had technical issues with the McGill website while trying to submit graphs/equations for the midterm. They emailed her the material instead (during the midterm window), and she refused to accept any of it. The average was 58% as a result. Lectures were dense and overly complicated.
Prof Choudhury speaks incredibly fast and is not easy to follow. I would recommend taking this class as an online course so you can rewatch and pause the lectures. Personally, I would avoid taking Choudhury in person as rewatching lectures was a must for me. The midterm was hard but the two essays weren't too difficult and the grading was fair.
She speaks super fast, but since the lectures were recorded, I took a lot of time to take in everything she said and had really good notes which were key for the online open-book tests. She explained everything super clearly and in an easily digestible way. Her slides were easy to follow too.
Avoid at all costs. Going so fast that most of the students were lost. Skip the classes and read the textbook as the exam will only be on the textbook material (which she follows). Rude in emails avoid asking her questions she will shame you for not understanding. Overall really bad.
prof goes way too fast in lectures and would sometimes not use the slides in class when teaching. just read the textbook and you should be fine. final exam is worth an absurd 70% and i'm paying tuition to teach myself but it is what it is lmao
Not a good prof. Speaks very fast and is incomprehensible at times. The final is worth 70% which is absolutely ridiculous. The two midterms were online, but they don't prepare you for the insane amount of content we're expected to memorize for the final. Take this class during the summer, or prepare for it in advance. I'm regretful.
The prof only graded us based on two midterms worth 15% each and a 70% final. Even if we ace both midterms, we could fail the class just based on the final. She speaks way too fast, and her slides are not easily digestable. She has a textbook's worth of information on the slides, and it takes her up to 6 slides to explain one concept.
I literally taught myself the whole course, no joke. She speaks very fast, and has a thick accent making it impossible to understand what she is saying. You're much better off skipping her class altogether and just reading the textbook. I would avoid her at all costs.
Do not take this course with this prof AT ALL COSTS. She speaks SO fast, difficult to understand, extremely difficult way of teaching . . . macro is such an easy course but she makes it so hard. I had to teach myself and get outside resources in order to pass. Would not recommend!
The midterms are very easy and the class does well. The issue is the 70% final. If you don't memorize the important textbook content, you will suffer on the final. If you don't do well on tests, choose a prof that distributes the grading weight more evenly. If you're good at multiple choice, you're golden. She's sweet but tough to listen to.
Made a hard class 10x harder. Speaks fast, could barely understand what she was saying, no time to write notes in class. Every lecture was an info dump, very overwhelming. if you slow down/pause her recordings, her explanations are actually decent, but her 1hour videos took 2+hours to get through. do ALL the mcq many times to practice for final!
I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews. I feel like they're a bit misleading and I would definitely recommend taking a class with her. She is one of the nicest professors I have ever come across and genuinely cares about her students' understanding of the material and doing well in her class.
Eesha is a great prof. Actually makes sure that you understand the material. The only thing is she talks super fast sometimes, but always available to clarify. Final was a bit harder than the Midterm but not impossible. Go to lectures, tutorial sessions, and solve the questions from the study guide and you should be fine.
Do NOT take her if you can avoid. If you're in IDS and have to take this class, just wait during summer because honestly if you haven't done any maths since like highschool this will be way harder than expected. She speaks SO fast, making it hard when maths are explained, only students that seem to understand are the ones that have done calc.
Lectures are taken directly from the textbook but missing important information. Often speaks quickly but says the same things three times. Tests have unclear grading criteria.
I feel that a lot of reviews of her are unfair. She is so accessible outside of class; if you study the material, nothing on the midterm will feel unreasonable. For her paper assignments, she will help you out if you ask. She will discuss your paper with you and give you helpful tips and pointers. But this class takes a lot of effort.
She is the worst prof I have ever had.
Lectures are fully pulled from the textbook but the textbook makes more sense. There were two exams, which expected you to have every graph memorized (no way to know which ones were on exam). The questions were open ended but a specific response was required and expected a lot of writing in a short period of time.
Her lectures are fully pulled from the textbook, but she makes them more confusing in the ppt. She was also rude during the few times I asked questions (via email or directly in class). I ended up doing well in her class because I put a lot of time and effort. I wouldn't recommend her, but if you do take her, my advice would be to use the textbook.
Midterm (30%) and exam (70%) were tough. The lectures were also hard to follow.
Avoid if you can, unless you have hours to spare to teach yourself the course in your own time. The kind of professor that makes you angry when you remember you're paying tens of thousands of dollars to an institution for an education.
boring lecturer who doesn't respond to email. pretty hard tests and we only had 2 grades, 20% for the mid-term and 80% for the final which consisted of multiple question answers.
The professor associates the simple equation or concept with how it was derived, making things easier for students with some basic knowledge to understand. She is pretty knowledgeable and could understand all kinds of questions I have. Overall, it's not tough for me and I would take her again.
Only 2 grades in the class--midterm and final. She goes way too fast in lectures and is not interesting to listen to. Can't tell if she's passionate about the subject, she just comes off as pretentious. I will say she nails the slides; study them, not the textbook. Got 54% on the midterm studying the textbook & 81% on the final using the slides.
She goes way too fast in lectures and doesn't even teach you what you will need to know for the exams. Do NOT take her you WILL regret it!
Probably the worst professor I have had so far at McGill.
Worst prof to have for such a simple class. Its hard to understand her because of her accent and she overcomplicates things that are not as difficult as she makes them seem. She teaches more content then teachers in the same section and makes pretty hard midterms and finals.
Really good professor! She is generous to share the lecture notes and she posted everything on mycourse in the first lecture including practice and practice exams. Her way of using graphs to explain concepts made the material so much more engaging and understandable for me. Strongly recommend!
ECON208 is a manageable course. If you read the textbook twice and complete all the practice questions, you'll be well-prepared. Many questions (at least 30) on the final were directly taken from the practice sets. However, the lectures weren't very helpful—she talks quickly, making it hard to follow.
Her lectures are hard to follow, but her tests are pretty easy.
Ummmm. In theory the class could be OK if you read the textbook and went to every lecture. The problem is she is SUCH A BAD TEACHER that you feel like you are wasting your time by going. Take the class but get ready to teach yourself the entire course.
The professor moves fast in lectures, but studying the slides closely helps a lot. While not the most engaging, she's knowledgeable. Definitely use unstuck study for extra prep.
She is not a good prof, doesn't know how to explain simple concepts and overcomplicates everything. Her powerpoint presentations are easier to follow than her actual lectures. You kind of have to teach yourself the class with what she gives you. Other problem is that there is only two grades midterm and final so overall would not recommend
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Completely overcomplicates everything and is very hard to follow. You will be teaching yourself this whole course. Questions from the tests are taken from the practice tests. Overall, she is a brilliant person, but a horrible professor.
Teacher who complicates what should be understandable material
I did not attend a single class. I should have asked the teacher which problems to practice. The assigned homeworks are surprisingly useless. Memorize the textbook and the practice midterms/finals for the A. At least she was honest about the class being a self-teaching course. Its hard though if ur not used to it
Buy the textbook, read the chapters, do the practice questions. The assignments that are posted on MyCourses are not necessary to do. Make sure to do every practice midterm/final exam that is posted before your own exam. You will always see a few questions copied over which are free marks for you. Lectures are also posted online.
This professor goes straight to the point and conveys the material effectively. I found her lectures quite interesting and humorous at times. Her exams were straightforward. I definitely recommend you sign up for one of her classes!
The professor is very informed about the subject she teaches and uses real-world applications to explain the concepts. I found her examples funny too! Classes are very lecture heavy and the material is quite dense so it can be a struggle if you don't pay attention. However reading the textbook helps to clarify all the doubts.
Took her on my first year of university and liked the way she taught. She shows example on the boards which were super helpful. The only thing you need to do to pass the class are show up to the lectures and PAY ATTENTION. The ones complaining about their grade were those that didn't do those 2 things.
The worst educator I've ever encountered. Lectures make no sense and she is scatterminded when she teaches. She is rude, unaccomodating and does not seem to understand rules at McGill. If you have the option to take a class with her with anyone else, then take it, otherwise, DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS WITH HER.
Prof Choudhury is not a good lecturer. She overcomplicates material that is otherwise very easy. Read the textbook and take good notes. She uses many of the practice questions she provides on her exams. Her exams are quite easy and do not require any critical thinking (MCQ only). She is a nice lady who is knowledgable but is just a bad lecturer
Lectures are incredibly complicated even though the material is very simple. Attendance is not mandatory, so I didn't attend lectures and just took thorough notes on the textbook and slides. Received a 90 on the midterm (30% of grade) and am taking the final soon - DO THE PRACTICE TESTS ON MYCOURSES, some questions on exams are taken from them.
