I didn't understand his lectures or explanations at all. I'm not sure if that's because he doesn't teach well, or if it's because I suck at physics. He was very nice and willing to help.
lectures feel long, quizes were hard for me, hes not bad but i had to drop this class.
Enjoyed class because of subject, but prof's teaching style was confusing. Graded from quizzes + final, but collects all quiz info after taking it, so no chance to learn from ur mistakes; wasn't able to answer some of my basic Q's. Good thing he graded on the curve, cause otherwise half the class would've flunked. Astronomy obviously NOT his forte.
hella boring but he is a very nice professor
he is great.. but hella funny.. i always says "does that make sense?" or "isn't that nice?" hes funny.. and a very good teacher..
This guy at least makes powerpoint presentation, which is more entertaining than looking at teacher. Grades on curve, half of it requires attendence if you dont read the text, his lectures really help clarify things from the book and vice-versa. Class does seem to be enduring, the beginning it easy until it gets more difficult/complex.
Good teacher but bad at explaining. teaches adults like tindy-garten kids. Very theoretical teacher if you want to succeed in his class, READ AHEAD otherwise you will be lost in the exams because the exams are more from the book than the lecture. In the end, i think he is an OK teacher you might not understand him but you can ask questions.
Hella boring, does not really answer questions. He just repeats your question and says that he will get back to it later and never does. Overall, very boring and he's monotone.
no homework. lectures are done on power point so take good notes for quiz. book doesnt seem necessary if you take good notes. boring teacher who says so a lot.
Very interesting class. He is kinda boring but will occassionaly make the class laugh a little. He uses powerpoint in his lectures. There is homework but he doesnt collect it, but still do the homework, cause it will help you in the quizzes. He gives a quiz every 2 weeks. He is very knowlegable about this subject. Recommend this class and teacher.
wow.... really awkward guy... he is good with lectures.... but the subject matter is not too fantastic... he doesnt go over things twice unless you ask him to go over them again... so speak up...... and pay attention during lectures... he says the wierdest stuff.
good teacher. The class is very easy. I didnt make it for over 2/3s the classes and still got a C.
Attend class and read chapters and nobody should have issues with passing this class. He uses powerpoint which can be boring at times but they will help out with tests. I liked this class and subject a lot!
Worst Physics Prof!!! He loses track of were he is in the middle of problems. He does ex. prob straight from the sol. manual. Students were constantly correcting him. VERY HARD TESTS! His tests were on material that he didn't lecture on. Review tests were helpless. Don't Take him for physics!
took him for both phys 411 n 421. worst prof. ever. shouldn't be a physics prof. shows no interest in the subject. lectures didn't help understand what was going on. tests were very hard to pass. didn't learn anything. should have taken a diff prof.
I'm taking him for astronomy and his class is extremely easy. He uses Powerpoint, and while it does get boring at times, it's easy to catch up on if you miss his class. Sadly, I don't think he does the subject justice, as it's taught in a monotone fashion.
Really nice guy but def not for me! If you are interested in this subject or can pick things up easily this class is for you. Also the grade depends on 8quizzes 15 pts each and a 30 pt final so if you screw up there really isnt room to make it up.
I really liked his class! He explains everything so clearly and concisely, follows the book perfectly, and can be pretty funny at times. Class is easy, just a quiz every other week, no tests, midterm, and the presentations are entirely optional. I'd definitely recommend him if you want to learn about astronomy without taking a complicated class.
Prof. Lopez is a kool guy, he is very helpful, but his class is hard. He's very smart, it's just that physics is a hard subject for me, so I ended up dropping his class & prolly will retake w/ an easier prof. He writes notes on the board, & it was tough, cuz I sat in the back, and it was hard to hear him over the fan.lol. Kool prof, not a coo class
He is a very boring teaching, super monotone. He doesnt take attendance but he throws out little extra credit quesitons sometimes and doesnt tell you when so you kinda have to go. You take 7 or 8 quizzes that are 15 points each that are kinda hard if u dont study very much. I wouldnt reccommend him for any class he teaches, math, astronomy or psyc
I am convinced that Prof. Lopez is incompetence teaching physic. His lecture are copied from book. His test copied from manual solution. His grading scale is a scam. He uses grading scale as his dirty weapon to favor those who come to his office begging him for a pass. Overall, He is still learning to behave professionally.
Monotone voice and seeming lack of interest in subject. He will make little jokes that are funny if you catch them, but it's hard to pay attention when he drones. Quizes are difficult without studying, and there is no chance at making up missed/badly done work. I would not wish his class upon anyone.
Yes, Lopez is very MONOTONE! I had a like for astonomy until i took this class. His lectures are hard to pay attention to and his quizzes are difficult. The quizzes are structured in a way were you have to constantly re-read the question and the answers to understand it. He uses "interesting" wording so that students wont get it. DO NOT TAKE HI
He was very boring with poorly written test questions. He showed videos of labs and the instructure on the 1970's video was much better!
Quizzes are hard, but as long as you do da reading, you'll be fine!
He grew on me. he made it simple for me to understand if you get the notes, you'll pass easily. i reccomend him, especialy if you cant write notes on your own.
very good teacher he gives great notes that come straight from the book his quizzes are easy and test are ok but you do need to study. he can be boring at times but overall great teacher he is willing to help students
A very good teacher. Can make a good joke once in awhile.Clear lectures that mostly pertain to the quiz. The book is also helpful.Just jot the notes down and study. However, there are some small things that you would have never thought he would put on the quiz so be careful. Why should people expect his quizzes to be easy? This isn't high school anymore.
Mr. Lopez is a good teacher. Class is simple just show up. If you take notes, study for quizzes a little, and do decent on the final you'll pass with a good grade. Professor is really nice and work isn't hard to do at all. If your not interested or even good at science take this class!
His interest in teaching wandered throughout the semester. For the middle couple months, he did an excellent job with a bit of dry humor. Last month, he showed little interest. He didn't hold class for several days then tested on material he didn't cover. That said, it wasn't particularly hard material. Make sure to read the book. Beware.
Easy but of course you have to do all the work . gives extra credit
This class subject is boring to me, but Professor Lopez makes it easy to follow. Quiz and test questions are not easy, but not hard. Do the extra credit paper and all the worksheets and you'll be fine. Very helpful too.
Lopez is quirky, but he is smart and will make sure you know the material. One down side is that he does tend to lose train of thought (becomes a little awkward for a moment) but he always gets back on track. You can really tell he cares if you understand and walk away having learned something.
Great professor! Very very well educated and very knowledgeable. Although sometimes id ask him questions and they would be legit and he would look at me like i am a complete moron...other than that he is cool and very approachable.
You need your thinking cap in this class. He expects you've mastered the prereqs and can then take what he's taught and apply it in new situations. Very helpful during labs, and doesn't mind explaining a concept again. Stickler on details on quizes and tests. Don't expect an easy A -- he likes the class average around 65%.
He's a really amazing teacher and his lectures are crystal clear. A bonus is that he is super funny and quirky-- I actually have fun during lectures! His tests are easy if you understand the basics. You don't have to attend lectures if you can read the book and self-study. He's really picky about correct units though, so check your work!
Very smart, with excellent knowledge of the subject, but somewhat disorganized and forgetful. Very nice (sometimes funny) and willing to help, but explanations of difficult subjects are sometimes rushed. There is no extra credit, and the quizzes and exams are tough. However the labs are easy. Read the textbook on your own to get a good grade.
Easy professor over all, just bunch of quiz and exams. Quiz all have a study guide just do the study guide and you will be fine. Tricky questions but you can drop up to 2 lowest grade quizzes. One final and worksheets (study guides) are 30 points.
Doesn't require you to show up, but the class is an easy A if you do. Lecture one day, quiz the next. Homework is a study guide for each quiz, 13 quizzes over the semester, 15 questions each. He drops the 2 lowest ones. 39 question final. Overall, easy class, funny guy, but can be a little bit boring sometimes
I found this class extremely fun, but that was because I had a fun group. Taking Phys 411 with Lopez is tough. You have to do a lot of outside work on your own. If you understand, then its an easy A. Quizzes are easy, labs are fun also, but tests are HARD!Take his class if you're smart and like little work. He breezes through chapters fast
He's super easy. his class is really fun even thou you can find it's sleepy sometimes cuz of his deep voice. He will answer all the questions you ask. Mr. Lopez is the greatest professor i have ever seen at CRC.
Intelligent, but not approachable. Doesn't give me the impression that he likes to teach. Lectures in monotone and uses dry humor sparingly. He isn't unfair or rude, but I wouldn't take him again.
Good class overall. I like Astronomy a lot. Even though i messed up on the first quizzes hence why i hope to pass with a C. pay attention to lectures, read book and you will pass class no problem. Class contains 12 quizzes, 1 final and couple extra credit assignments.
Best physics professor I have ever taken! Of course you need to put in the work and practice to understand physics. His notes and explanations are done so well I did not have to read the book much at all! The amount of homework he gives is just right, not too much, plus extra practice problems that will help prepare you for the quizzes and exams.
There is 12 chapter tests and 1 final (last 3 chapters). Chapter tests are 12 questions each and 1 short answer. His lectures can be boring to some and interesting to some; depending on whether you like the subject or not. Take notes during class but don't rely solely on the notes. He uses more technical terms and could be tricky if you didn't.
good at explaining his prepared material but sometimes has difficulty explaining the answers to questions that he wasn't expecting. He's a pretty funny guy but super monotonous, so do yourself a favor and avoid late night/early morning classes with him.
12 chapter tests (1 per week almost) of 13 multiple choice and the final is the last 3 chapters with 35 questions but he only grades 30, and one individual assignment of your choosing. The material is interesting but his lecture style can be a bit dry leading to many people only coming for the exam- he posts his lectures on d2l if you study at home
No one realizes that this professor is actually really great. Yeah his test are a bit tough but that's only if your an idiot who doesn't study. The professor does his best to make you learn and the rest is on you. I loved this class and it was fun, Lopez was the best part about it.
Lopez is a cool guy. He's fairly monotone which lead me to believe he was disinterested in the class, but my few conversations with him, and occasional moments his personality crept out in class showed me he does really care. Labs are fun, hw is not excessive, exams are difficult. Study, come to class, participate and you'll be fine. I'd take again
Cares and does his best to explain to students. Study and understand materials because tests are difficult. If you want to learn, take him.
Gives study guides that are irrelevant. Pulls test Qs out of thin air. Tough class. Nice guy, good lecturer but the study guides are pointless and you will not do too well.
This was the absolute worst teacher I have had. He is not willing to stay after class to help you he cuts you off exactly at the end of class. So if you can't make it to office hours (because of work) he could careless about you. The exams were impossible no matter how hard you study. I don't think I met a student in the class who wasn't fustrated
Professor Lopez is a really sweet guy but his delivery and required text are off completely. His tests barely match his lectures and he gives you a study guide for each exam but they dont match the exam given. The text he uses is too outdated. If your going to take him, READ AND STUDY out of the book not off his lectures. Its not hard though
Definitely cares about his students, but like other reviewers have said, his tests are challenging. You definitely have to know the material really well because even though he gives you tons of practice questions, the actual questions on the test are totally different. HW is not mandatory but do it anyway, trust me
His lectures to exams can be compared to being handed a screwdriver and then required to put together a car. If you arent an engineering or physics major, I highly recommend taking this class with someone else; however, Ive had classmates who are engineering majors drop the class because of his teaching style.
You have your typical physics HW, and then you have your typical soil science history exams. Sometimes the professor can be more potent than anesthesia. Everything is answered with yes from him. Also, please say yes.
Take him! Awesome, well-paced lectures and light hw. Exams are tough, though--the only way to do well is to consider the practice problems mandatory. The weekly quizzes will kill you if you decide to fall behind, but they're very easy if you've read your notes and started the hw. Super nice, knowledgeable professor. Really enjoyed his class.
The textbook is free online and he gives you the website. There is a 20 point quiz every week and that was the only time i went to class because the lectures are simply restating what the online chapters contained. I didnt read the chapters really which is why i got such a low grade but if you put in minimal effort you will be fine
He is not knowledgeable about Physics at all. His lecture is very boring and not helpful because he just copy his notes all the time. He is mean too. Do not take his class.
Textbook was free online and there was no hw. Weekly quizzes which were almost entirely based on lectures. Two mission reports which were pretty straightfoward. Nice professor overall.
I only took Physics with Lopez because I lived closest to CRC. I took him for 411 and got a B barely. I am sure that if you study every single detail and really grasp the concepts of his lectures (and much more that he fails to discuss), you will be fine. His exams are the most difficult and be aware that they are very unpredictable.
I understand that this is a hard class, but this professor just made it a lot harder. His lectures and assigned homework have nothing to do with the exams. If you can study from the book and do a lot of additional homework on your own, you can think about passing. Also, he does not explain or give partial credit. Avoid before you want to drop!
The lectures were borderline worthless. I never took notes. He would drone on for the duration of class spending FAR too much time on the derivation of something, and then briefly showing one short example that isn't like the test questions. His grading was obnoxious in that a slight mistake was an instant 5-10% off the top, no curve either. Avoid.
He is very straightforward. He tells you how to do well and how you are graded. His grading on individual problems can be tough. Read the book, take notes when reading and when in lecture, pay attention, do the homework, use study guides, and you'll do fine on the weekly quizzes and exams. "Reports" are like in-class essays with prior preparation.
I'd take him if there are only asynchronous classes left. Otherwise, pick someone else. He's slightly disorganized. He does enjoy what he's doing though, which makes the class a bit more enjoyable. Quizzes each week and usually homework each week as well. Took 3 exams excluding the final. I suggest doing extra studying with youtube
He's not really a good teacher. His labs were very monotonous and he didn't give much direction to them. He report a bunch of people to the dean for cheating on his final unfortunately. I personally would never take him again.
Took 411 half in-person and 421 online. Compared to Dow, Lopez is a much more thorough prof. He spends more time and effort on lectures, and doesn't just read from slides. Exams were difficult but he gave practice exams. Weekly quizzes where collaboration was allowed. Great for understanding but there are easier profs if you only want units.
Professor Lopez is unpredictable, all of the tests scores were really low (<70%) and he did not even curve the class at the end, when he mentioned multiple times he was going to curve the class at the end. He is not accurate in his syllabus at all. Wait for a different professor.
His quizzes cover his lectures, so you'd think they'd be good for study material. In reality, his exams are completely irrelevant to both his lectures, quizzes, study guide. When the average on the final is <60, you know his final exam didn't cover class material that he went over. O-chem was significantly harder, but I knew what to actually study.
Class is extremely exam-heavy since they are worth about 90% of your grade. The exams are very difficult since they cover material he has not taught during class, nor included in study guides. No curves or extra credit offered, even though he mentioned multiple times that he would curve the final grade.
(from Spring 2021) His lectures are straight from the textbook plus some examples. When I took him, he allowed group quizzes and labs. His homework was decent, but none of his material prepares you for him exams. And considering that his exams make up the majority of your grade, it's difficult to raise or save your grade to pass. So, no.
He didn't teach as well - mainly when students asked questions he would just give the answer and not help them get through the thought process, and wasted a lot of time demonstrating things during class that never ended up on tests/exams.
This course took a toll on my mental health. His lectures go over problems that are not in the quizzes/exams. He doesn't prepare you at all, the problems are extremely tough and tricky. He docks off points on the smallest irrelevant things in the labs. HW is only worth 1 point. Super unfair. Sucks that he is the only one teaching 350/360 at Losrios
This is the most terrible class I have ever taken in my life, I hate how there is no EC and he doesn't even teach to begin with. He also ignores email when students are worried about their grades and He doesn't care about students' future and how much hard work they have put in just to understand the lesson he gives. DONT TAKE HIM
I do not think that 350 characters will be enough to describe the torture and mental strain that I suffered in this class. First off, his lectures are extremely monotone and dull, but he does cover many problems. Ironically, NONE of those problems or any similar show up on the exam. Exams are 90% of your grade, so doing well is near impossible.
Lectures are difficult to follow, and the material is not on the exam. Told us all semester that he would curve the class, but ended up not doing it due to the excuse that "Some classmates MAY HAVE cheated," with no circumstantial evidence whatsoever. Hard to approach him, and does not reply to emails at all. Professor is rude and unhelpful.
What you should know: his lectures are okay, he teaches from these slides that come from the online textbook program that is used. His practice exams + study guides don't match the actual exam in terms of difficulty. Easy to fail.
Doesn't give good materials to prepare for exams, and the class material in general is already hard enough so exams are bad. Doesn't curve exams even if the average is literally failing. Doesn't respond to emails and its affecting my grade. He is inconsistent and overall a bad professor.
Took in Spring of '23. Class M/W 9-10:20 AM & Labs Tues. 8:45-11:50 AM. 13 quizzes, 12 HW, 13 labs, 3 exams, &1 final. He's funny in lectures & shows us examples of problems that may show up on exam. During lab he has patience for everyone that has questions, but grades tough. He gives study guides for tests, which are hard, but still fair.
This professor grades tough with minor errors costly a big chuck of your exams. He has many exams practices, but most of the questions don't prepare you for the real exams that may mislead you. This course is fast which might frustrate you when you don't have a great understanding of physics. P.S. tests and exams are the 70% of your grade, be wary.
First off, Professor Lopez is very knowledgeable and relaxed. However, he does a terrible job at preparing students for exams (which make up at least 70% of the grade if not more). The practice materials he releases prior to each exam seem misleading and are a waste of time, and he often tests you on topics you have just learnt a few days prior.
Professor Lopez is nice and softspoken, but his homework assignments, quizzes, and practice exams are irrelevant towards his exams. His exams are challenging and require students to practice a diverse amount of problems. In addition, his lectures are mediocre and don't emphasize the conceptual aspect of physics greatly.
A lot of hate towards this professor comes from the fact that a lot of people are taking 411 as a requirement and don't understand it's one of those first college classes you have to take seriously. If you're not going into a major that further needs physics take someone easier but all those derivations and labs are important.
Lopez was overall a great, welcoming, and funny professor! I struggled a lot in PHYS 421 with him, but not as much for PHYS 431. Exams were of medium difficulty as long as you worked on the examples, practice exams, and textbook problem sets. Study in-class examples to prepare for quizzes and do textbook problems/practice exam for the exams.
The exams are difficult, but it is a difficult class. Professor Lopez lectures at a great pace--not too fast, making it easy to internalize the information. He also keeps it entertaining with jokes. He is also incredibly helpful when you ask questions/go to office hours. You will come out of his class with a great understanding of the subject.
Professor Lopez is a great teacher. His class forces you to understand the applications of the material, rather than memorizing steps. He is very helpful in labs and office hours. You also get an equation sheet for exams.
He is nice and fun. His lectures are difficult. The exams will be very difficult if you haven't solved many practice questions or don't understand the topics. However, if you keep up with the class and practice, you will be able to pass without any problems. He doesn't give ridiculously hard questions. The quizzes are very easy.
Prof Lopez is such a great professor. He cares about his students and will answer any questions you may have. I enjoyed all the demos he showed in class and made physics interesting and easy to understand. There are quizzes every week and homework assigned weekly but both are easy to do. Highly recommend!!
Lopez is super helpful both in lab and lecture, and I know he wants every student to succeed. His tests are more difficult than the homework or practice exams he provides, so I would recommend studying outside of class more often than usual. He answers questions clearly during lecture, and his labs are actually helpful, and quite straightforward.
Honestly, I have had success in all of my other classes, but he was a very hard teacher, and although he's funny, his exams are really tough. I averaged 60% on all of the exams, and I thought his class wasn't hard, but his exams are something else. Always be ready for trick questions, cuz he had plenty of them (Multiple Choice Questions).
