So confusing in class !! But does give example of whole exam.
very theroretical type of teacher. Good teacer for higher type of math, not good for any class under Calc.
VERY VERY VERY CONFUSING AND HARD I'D SAY THE WORST TECHER ON THIS PLANET WARNING: DONT SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS !!!
He never teaches you what he will give on exams or how to do the process... What he just talks in class are proofs of theories which are really dull and uninteresting... He is very particular on the use of "formal" symbols and words and not whether you grasp the concept or not...
Spends a lot of time on theorems, but does regular examples if you ask him. He likes to get "deep" with his lectures, focusing on the theory and definitions. Good teacher overall, don't let his teaching style intimidate you. The tests aren't that bad.
His tests are really easy. But, I did not learn anything from him. I always need to read the book. All he talks in class are theories and proofs and not how to do the things.
He is a good professor for Ph. D because he likes math so much and he wish all his students really like math and how to prove, which in most cases students don't like. His tests are really easy, you just got the handout before the exam and prepare for those, the questions are almost the same.
This dude is the man. He's the toughest teacher I've ever had, but he made me a better student. Stop complaining about proofs and theroms......that is what math is all about. I you want to be a better student you should take this guy's class.
He was such a great math professor, he was clear and went into a lot of depth on what he taught to make it ALLLL clear. He was a little challenging, but those are always the fun ones.
This guy's a specific body cavity that I don't care to mention, not even for him. Save you time and don't take him.
You will not learn anything from this guy! I self studied throughout the whole semester with the book. I asked him to explain something to me, he said I must have been absent during lecture and he's dissapointed that I didn't know... Dude, youre supposed to teach me! Anyway do yourself a favor and stay away from this guy!
he is the best of the best, but his lectures are hard to understand them, eventhough they are easy he mades them more unclear with our level. other than that he is the teacher of teachers.
Best teacher in the world. He is a smart guy. eventhought lot times studnets can't follow what he teaches. but he answers problems clearly.. and he gives lot extra credit for rising up grade.
He is great at explaining new concepts. He is a very dedicated professor and is always willing to stay after class to help you understand. Also very into proving theories.
He is very clear and explains the subject in great detail, he is the best math teacher at Chabot. He is very dedicated to the subject he teaches and he loves math.
I retook this class with Mr. Batchelor and ended up getting a B! YAY! I suck in math but this teacher gave so easy equations on tests that i knew how to solve them easily. They were basic ones too! Plus, he teaches very well that i understood most of his lectures. Trust me, he is the easiest Cal teacher at Chabot ONLY if u study and do ur HW!
Definitely has a passion for math. Genuinely cares about helping his students understanding. Very approachable. Respects his students. Sometimes hard to find in his office hours. Keeps the problems simple for in class tests. Gets trickier for take home tests. Recommend.
He is an extremely bright and passionate teacher. However, he gets WAY too theoretical... trying to do the homework based on his lectures is not possible! You will end up trying to learn from the book. If math is not second nature for you, I would not recommend him.
run while you can
He was an okay teacher. His exams were pretty easy and his quizzes too. There is a good amount of extra credit. The only problem is that his final was freaking hard. I had b's on my exams and ended up with C in the class cause i probably flunked the final. Mostly the last 5 sections was all on the final! he said it was comprehensive..yeah right lol
Enthusiastic and covers a lot of material and spends most time split between working on proofs for new concepts and examples. Tests reflect very well the work done in class.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Yes, he can be very theoretical, but if you're willing to work hard you will learn more failing his class than you will getting an A in someone else's class. So if you're in school to learn, take him. If you just want an easy A, don't waste his time, or the time of the students who are there to learn.
Learned almost completely from the book in his class. Very theoretical and difficult to do the homework based on his lectures. Passes out a lot of packets and handouts based on the lecture. His exams are very similar to the practice exams and quizzes he passes out and goes step by step in them to make it easy to understand going into an exam.
This guy was okay. I don't think preparation and presentation of/for the class was perfect. Lots of ambiguity in his class... Everyone says he was a good teacher in math 4 thoguht so i don't math 3 he did an okay job
Tests are easy. Lectures are useless.
Although I got an A, I am not happy. I just could not learn anything from him. He rarely use textbook. What he did in class was horrible smiling. If you just want get an A, hes the guy. Otherwise, not recommended.
He's a really good teacher. Personally, I found him witty and actually quite intelligent. He knew what he was talking about. He dropped the lowest test and did not take attendance--leaving it all up to YOU if you WANT to succeed! He has a low tolerance for leaving class early so give the NICE teacher some respect. Every math students ideal teacher.
Mr. Batchelor is brilliant. Lectures focus on theory...he doesn't want you to do things just because he told you to, he wants you to understand WHY. If you have trouble with HW, just ASK QUESTIONS, people! Methods he uses to do HW examples are often more efficient. He WILL make you smarter...after lots of hard work! And it is so worth it...
Great teacher. Lots of proofs in class. Pay attention and you will understand trig better than you ever have before.
wow, bunch of nerds bumping this guys rating up.worked so hard but still only got a B. you better have a solid math background.Killer final,i had an A going into the final but got a B.Refuses to curve for As and Bs. Incomprehensible lecture and just 10% of it is useful so people just go on their laptops.not as easy as his easiness ratining.BEWARE =(
batchelor is such a boring teacher because he goes through proofs all day and takes homework problems into this theoretical journey of philosophicalness...he's hard to understand so just know you have to work hard by studying yourself. but he gives lots of practice quizes and exams to help you out.
Do not take his class. All he does are proofs, rather than going over actual problems. For those who think his exams for this class will be similar to the practice exams, think again. On the second exam, around 75% of the class got a D or F. Homework is extra credit, but it doesn't really help. His final was killer. Pure death on paper.
You have to come to class to do well in his class, but he's very helpful if you go to him.
His lectures are useless. If you learn by the book, everything you learn will be useless since he has his own methods for every problem. He expects you to do the same. Honestly, he cares more about math than how well the class does overall. He laughed about how the class avg for the 2nd quiz was a D/F. Avoid at all costs.
Bye Bye UC Berkeley:((( i heard he starts to take attendance by calling names instead of signing in now since half my class never showed up lol. super hard 40% of your grade final. i had to self teach myself calc 2. dam no more 4.0 =(((((((
Mr. Batchelor is a brilliant math prof. Usually his ways of doing problems are more efficient. If you do problems the way he does you will be much stronger mathematically. Most of the class didn't bother showing up, and of the ones that did only about half payed attention, so it's no wonder so many people performed poorly in his class.
Lectures are nearly incomprehensible. Like others have said, he mainly goes over proofs, none of which are on his exams. Therefore, going to class can be a waste of time. You will learn in this class by going over his handouts. His tests and quizzes tend to be tricky and were relatively different from the practice tests for math 2
by definition this,by definition that, omg hes lectures are pointless! in other words he sucks at teaching. how are you going to learn when he ignores your questions on purpose? you learn more off of the book hahaha.
I like the guy, but his lectures gave me a headache every time. I get A's in math and love the subject but he overcomplicates things wayy too much. Practice tests/quizzes are incredibly helpful tho. Needs to learn how to convey concepts in laymen's terms better. Taught above most of the classes heads in discrete math. Learned mostly in the mathlab
He is a cool guy, I would say very easy, because he gives out practice exams... helpful and very good mathmatician... however might be very confusing and technical at times, i would say over all 80% good.
He has very unnecessary lectur, but he does give you practice exams so its very helpful with the exams an quizzes,
I didn't like his class, his lectures are confusing and he is the only one who laugh about his own jokes.... I learn everything from the book!!!
He knows his stuff extremely well. Although he tends to make things seem more complicated than they really are, BUT, it helps you to understand where equations are derived. He pretty much teaches by showing you proofs, which at first I HATED, but then they seemed very interesting and fun. Attend class + do your work + study = A+
EASIEST MATH TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD, IF YOU WANT AN EASY A OR B, THIS IS THE MATH TEACHER YOU DONT WANNA MISS, HE GIVES OUT PRACTICE TEST WHICH IS 100% SIMILAR... SUCH AN EASY CLASS!!
One of the best.
Fantastic teacher. Very clear about what he wants. He gives practice exams and quizzes that are very much like the actual test, and EC for homework which is added to exams. Attendance is part of the grade. A bit eccentric but he knows his stuff.
He teaches everything through proofs. At first I wasn't so sure about that, since my entire math education prior was "memorize this, then repeatedly plug numbers into it", but by end of semester I was really into the proofs. Not an easy class, but fun and challenging. Take if you enjoy math and like understanding math more than memorizing it.
His class is really easy. He checks off attendance rarely, and checks off homework at the beginning of each exam. You don't even have to complete all the assignments to recieve full credit.. I highly recomend taking this class extremly easy
DEFINITELY THE BEST MATH TEACHER WE HAVE IN CHABOT! MATH IS NOT JUST MEMORIZING FORMULAS , HE GIVE U D BEST PROOF EVER. TOOK HIM 4 MATH 1 & 2, CURRENTLY TAKING HIM FOR 3 AND I WILL DEFINITELY TAKE HIM FOR 6. I THINK HE SHOULD WRITE A MATH BOOK!!!!
Strange, disorganized, and esoteric lectures that don't accomplish anything left me more confused than the last. How many random 20 page packets am I going to have to pick up each class? The material would be a lot easier taught by a teacher with a more practical style of teaching. Don't waste your time with this guy.
By far the best teacher I have ever had...Any question asked is explained perfectly, and he helps make Calc easy and understandable. He stays after class to help everyone with questions. Quizzes/Tests resemble practice quizzes/tests...Final resembles all previous quizzes/tests, 1 or 2 of the new stuff just learned b4 final.
Mr. Batchelor is the the best math teacher at Chabot College. Having taken this same class in high school, I can determine that his unconventional ways at arriving at a concept are much more philosophical than the way the book has it left out for you. He makes you think on all sides of the spectrum than what is necessary. Take him and THINK!
I love Batchelor's class, but his style does not make for a dynamic academy. This means that in order to make the best out of his class, your focus need be math much more than anything else at Chabot. If you have other classes to worry about, It's very tough to keep up with Batchelor's way of thinking and how it relates to the material.
Teaching atyle is the opposite from Dr.Yest's philosophy. Both are amazing (if you love math). Not a teacher to take if you rely on rote formula memorization. Express your concerns, he is very kind. I did not get the grade I wanted but got a grade I deserved which is better than the reverse. Has exponentially increased my interest in Math.
He is patient and willing to help you all the time. Even though his lecture is not easy, he will try his best to let you understand. Consider to take his class.
Speaking from a previous diff eq student, Egl has an interesting way of presenting course work material. He loves to make the topics more animated with an adventurous approach in using his typed up packets ofdocuments by wrapping up a concept with an animal/person saying something implying about how you should feel at that moment. It's hilarious.
Egl is a VERY thorough teacher. He relies more on teaching through the gritty-ness of proofs, Which can bug most people, but it's a really effective teaching style because it forces you to completely understand the content. Homework is for extra credit, and his practice exams-quizzes are exactly like his actual ones, which is VERY nice.
His class has style. His word is inspiring. Math isn''t just a tool but a complex creation. I really like his quiz and test. No one design a better quiz and test than his. His notation is innovation and makes complicated problem easy as cake. The only problem is that he often run out of class time. though most people are willing to stay
I took this class as a high school student and I found his teaching style very different. He's very passionate about math and he really understands the content. When it comes to explaining very complex ideas he tends to use metaphors. He designs his own handouts and homework problem sets and I found the examples and questions very interesting.
Truly an inspirational professor. When it comes to giving lectures, Professor Batchelor has a very unique style of doing it. It may seem somewhat confusing and intimidating at first, but once you start getting used to his style and notation, his lectures become very fulfilling and satisfying. Read the packets he gives you and understand them!
I took his class and I failed the first test. However, I knew that he took out the lowest test so I remained. I payed attention and got tutoring. The class was long but he would help you on your homework and any questions you had. You get practice tests which looks VERY SIMILAR to the actual tests. Homework is counted but not checked thoroughly.
Honestly, Mr. Bathchelor is by far one the best Math teachers I've had at Chabot. Despite his lectures about universe & Theory, I learned how to love and appreciate Math. His quizzes and test were easy. His homework packets helps a lot for practice. Yes, he gives a lot of proofs, but don't just memorize, actually understand them. Awesome teacher.
The practice tests are too similar to the actual tests. This does not give students enough incentive to work through his HW packets, and the textbook. The lectures are usually very hard to follow for all but the most interested students. That being said, his lectures are excellent for some. Take this class if you are a slacker, or are inspired.
Mr. Batchelor blew my mind daily in class. Do all his homework packets and you'll be fully prepared for the final. don't bother with the text book work.
I like his effort to teach a new way, but I didn't understand him. I had over 50 hours at the math lab to understand the material. Class takes time and effort. Great to offer extra credit and lots of packets to help get ready for the exams.
Three exams and three quizzes plus participation points. The final is worth 40% of your grade. Took him for both Multivariable and Diff EQ and had an A going into both finals and ended up walking out with C's in both. His practice tests are similar to his actual exams which allows you to slack during the semester until he slaps you with the final.
There are 4 quizzes (1 is attendance), 3 exams and 1 final. If you complete the homework, you will receive up to 5% EC on exams & final. I found him very helpful and try to see him while he's at math lab. He knows what's he's teaching and is passionate about calculus. I highly recommend Batchelor. He gives out packets of notes & handwrites notes.
Do not take him unless you can learn by yourself. he is super abstract and over complicates every concept (tons of proofs!) and he has a lot of handouts Attendance is part of your grade. Homework is 5% extra credit on tests. Tests/quizzes are easy and VERY similar to his practice packets so just study questions like those and you can get an A.
Midterms and quizes are same as practice ones he passes out. BUTTTTTTT NO PRACTICE FINAL KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS PEOPLE WILL FAIL FROM AN A-C or F
The first teacher I've had that inspires ppl to understand the beauty/history of math. If taken for Calculus, he will challenge your foundation and push you to really understand it all. He breaks large concepts down to the essentials and removes tedium but then goes into great detail to prove these basics. It takes focus but the ends are worth it.
Don't buy the textbook, he assigns hw but no one does it because he also assigns a separate hw packet which will be 5 extra credit on your next quiz or exam (do most of it and he'll give you full 5 points, do some and he'll give you 3 points) Your grade is out of 500 points and your final is 200 points. Drops your lowest exam or total quiz/attendan
He is the best math teacher i have ever had! He really is a phenomenal teacher, the proofs are the structures in mathematics, and if you pay attention, he will greatly help you build a strong foundation, so that you could comfortably and efficiently work in the world of mathematics.
the class was hard. I worked hard for my for my A. If you take his class get ready for boring lectures awkward silence and loads of homework and handouts. You don't have to take notes at least I didn't because I stored all the information in my head.
Do not take his class if you don't enjoy math. He talks at length about the beauty and joy of math and he teaches the material in a way that is interesting, but if you don't care it's just tedious and more difficult to review things later on. He gives extra credit homework and tests are very similar to the practice exams, so study those well.
Prof. Batchelor is unlike any other professor you'll find at Chabot. He teaches math in a very formal manor, but is very organized and lenient with it. It amazes me how he can make the most difficult concepts and problems seem to be a joke. His lectures are also deep, and makes math seem very interesting. Best professor Chabot has to offer for math
Talks about beauty of math alot. What hasn't been said much: Use old tests to study for final and you'll be fine. Uses very formal notation and proofs + can go fast, but prints packets of notes and you can go to the front to copy what you missed. No textbook. First weeks are always on logic. Does HW in class. Doesn't check email. Drops lowest test.
I thought pre cal would be easy since I took calculus in high school Instead it was kind of a challenge because he provided an entirely different perspective on math than what I was used to. He teaches students to use logic to understand the rules and properties in math instead of having us blindly follow them Take this class only if you love math
At first, I was intimidated by his use of logic. But the more I understood it the more I appreciated it. He gives practice quizzes and test which are almost identical to the actual ones. He gives extra credit and is available at the stem center. If you do the work and put in the time you should get an A.
very abstract class, if you are not the abstract type of people, don't take it. Everything is abstract. Does give practice exam and quiz, which very similar to the real one, but no practice final. This could be a difficult class even with the practice material that you have, so consider it before you take it.
Doesnt have a structured lecture, takes the entire class period to do two problems for precalc. Tests are similar to practice tests final is cumulative. Lectures a waste of time. Also cracks jokes that only he laughs at which makes class awkward.
Took calculus with him. The guy is brilliant but his logic could really hurt students. Most students struggle to learn with his style, and there are better ways to teach math and get people to understand it. I got the best grade in my class but I still left with a bad understanding of certain concepts. Lectures are useless, but it's an easy A
Doesn't use a textbook and teaches in an unconventional way. It's really hard for students to stay engaged during lecture, will go off on multiple long tangents, uncomfortable laughter, and completes examples that go past the allotted lecture time. The only reason his rating is mildly high is because you can pass without knowing anything.
This instructor is one who loves to talk about his subject. He is a great instructor that will answer your question while his homework packet gives you everything you need. He also give a practice test/exam that will help you immensely. Small complaint would be him going over the schedule time
Professor Batchelor is an incredibly intelligent man with a deep love and understanding of Mathematics. That said, he is a terrible teacher. He overcomplicates EVERYTHING. He grades only on tests/quizzes and gives practice exams that are near identical so you can memorize and pass but will not learn ANYTHING unless you learn it outside of class.
Teaches in unconventional way, if you are used to organized/in-order teaching directly form book do not take him. His way of teaching is all over the place with proofs before every new idea. I would personally not take him again as it is not my preferred teaching style but If that is no problem then I would take him. Easy class to pass.
Proof heavy professor. Not my preference, but many classmates liked his teaching style. His papers/textbook is very useful, all ideas broken down with proofs. Gives EC and practice test/quiz are identical to real test/quiz. Great guy, very passionate about math. If I were more into proofs he would be my favorite teacher. His Penmanship is relaxing.
TL;DR: Take him for Math 6. Don't take him for anything else. Linear Algebra is truly his specialty, and his logic is very easy to follow in that class. I also took him in Math 3, and that was not such a great experience. Calc should be taught by mostly practice, and the proof structure is not good for practice.
I have taken Trig, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus 1 with Prof. Batchelor. If you put the time in outside of class doing homework and reviewing notes, you will do well. It's all about the practice to gain understanding.
I didnt learn much from his proof heavy teaching style, but his class was a lot easier than I expected. I had to go to Youtube for most of the concepts in the class but since his practice quizzes/exams are nearly identical to the real ones, the class was a breeze. HW is optional and extra credit on exams. His online class is the best experience!
He definitely has a unique teaching style, the class is mostly just proofs. You're going to have to do some studying on your own, but his practice tests are superrrrr identical to his actual tests. Homework counts as extra credit towards tests. Your entire grade relies solely on attendance and quizzes/tests. He gives you a week to submit the exams
This professor is very caring and the nicest professor I have had. He gives you 3 days to complete exams and test which is so nice of him. He gives you practice exams with answers that are almost identical to the exam which helps you get an easy A. There's optional hw for extra credit. The only con is his teaching is a bit different.
This professor is a good option if you 1) want a high grade 2) really like proof or for future proof classes However, he is not a good option if you 1) want to learn the most important things in a subject, like linear algebra and calculus. Proof isn't really important in these subjects. 2) prepare for future classes except proof classes.
His lecturing style is special because he really likes proof, but his class should be an easy A because his review exams and review quizzes are very similar to actual exams and quizzes. He does not provide review exams for final.
Proof heavy in his lecture. Homework is optional and it is extra credit for exams. 3 quizzes + 3 midterms + 1 final. He provides practice problems before quizzes and midterms, and they can help you do well on quizzes and exams. So, an easy A.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. His notes are amazing and goes over material really well. I wish all STEM teachers were like him. Very patient.
Practice tests nearly identical to exams. Exams made this class easy A (difficulty 2), but if you want to actually learn calculus, I would give this class difficulty 4. Lectures weren't engaging, and has so many obscure symbols that he uses exclusively for his class & makes it difficult to read notes. Takes attendance worth 2 quizzes. Nice guy tho
Clear lectures, straightforward exams
Class was boring and confusing, explanations were terrible and didn't even use math terms most of the time.
Batchelor's class is super easy if you do the practice tests. Tests are almost word for word same. You get a week to do em, which is nice. I recommend watching the lectures at 1.5x speed cuz they can be pretty slow. I wasn't the biggest fan of his textbook, but he goes over everything you need to know in his lectures. It was an easy A.
this is a self study course. he has lectures but he records them so u can watch whenever. exams are carbon copy of prac exams & if theres a question u dont understand he'll go over it at office hours. HW is extra cred added to points taken OFF from exams. easy class but dont feel like i am solid on calc 3.
He teaches in an abstract way, with the class entirely proofs. This teaching style might not work for you, and you might have to study material after class, but grades are mostly attendance and exams, which are identical to practice exams. I'd rather take Vu Nguyen, but if he's not available this is an easy A with some effort.
Went to his class on day one and knew his teaching style was not good for me. Be very careful, his class is based entirely on proofs and he's definitely not a professor for everyone.
Not sure why there's so much hate. If you're taking an online course, you should expect that you'll have to teach yourself. Dudes really sweet, and this class is a really easy A.
His class is lecture and proof heavy, but he'll explain more in depth anything you ask! Attendance is graded the same points as a test, and for most tests if you do the mini-homework it'll count as extra credit for that test. Get a study group and you'll be fine.
I think Professor Batchelor may have retired, but he deserves this review. He works really hard to create digestible course material and to train you to think like a mathematician. He teaches in the abstract, but to really understand the more complicated concepts its necessary, if you come in with an open mind, you will learn to love math from him.
He was very nice but would go off on too many tangents during lecture, never felt like I actually learned anything in his class. I learned more from my classmates that learned from online lectures. He also uses his own textbook and wastes a lot of paper in his in person classes. I would come home with reams of unhelpful lecture notes.
I had him synchronously over zoom. His class is easy to pass, with 3 take home exams and a final exam, all of which you have a week to do. No homework is graded. I learned nothing though, and took a separate math 3 class at another college at the same time to actually learn the material. Take him to boost your GPA, not to learn.
The lectures are abstract and proof-focused, but practice exams are nearly identical to the real tests. Attendance and exams are the main grades - study hard and use resources like unstuck study, you'll earn an easy A.
