Great Prof
very hard marker, likes specifics, great course
This instructor exemplifies nothing short of excellence
Don't like it? That's Reality!!!!
this guy is the best prof i've ever had. period.
brilliant, passionate prof. fascinating class. softspoken, helpful out of class
most brilliant prof at uvic! take as elective from any faculty, you'll love it
Cares about his students- can you ask for more?
Best class I've had so far. You couldn't ask for a more qualified or more interesting prof. Take this class!
Philosopher par excellance. This guy knows his hist of phil backwards and forewards. Provides excellent study notes on the internet. Funny and animated-one of those profs with a shtick. Somewhat abrasive at first but grows on you quickly. 2 thumbs way up!
It's applied ethics, so there's not much point ever making an objection in class: most ethical "objections" revolve around meta-ethical issues, not applied ethical issues. So leave the thinking cap at home, and just come to memorize and regurgit
whoa, this guy's smart. He's the most knowledgable prof. I've ever met or had. I don't know if I like him, but that pales when it really just matters that he knows, really knows, what he teaches. Uvic is lucky to have the old coot.
This guy is a genius. He acts like a jerk, but he's actually very funny. Listen, take notes. His classes are precious and when you reflect upon UVic in 30 years, I bet you'll think of Kluge.
This course should be a pre-req to life (and medical school!) Kluge is brilliant and engaging. Though you might not want to go huffa-huffa with your poopsie-baby after this course for fear of all the ethical concerns that could arise if you get pregnant!
A brilliant course taught by a brilliant professor. He says it like it is. Politically incorrect? Sure. Don't like it? Tough beanos! Go into the course with your misconceptions, and he'll set you straight. Pre-med? Take this course.
Amazing prof. The class is such an eye opener, I recommend it to everyone, regardless of their major. He's politically incorrect, but he knows his stuff and I don't think one could find a more qualified individual to teach this course.
Probably the most amazing professor you will ever have in university. He says it as it is, and avoids suger-coating the truth; that's what I appreciate the most. Hands down the most influencial prof I've ever met.
A very interesting guy, knows his stuff, and probably mostly everybody else's stuff too. He's not afraid to tell you that you're dead wrong and not afraid to hand out crappy marks either. That said, great prof, take his class.
Everyone should have to take this class! The prof is amazing, the subject is fascinating, never a boring lecture!! Great guy too. Very helpful outside of class time. The guy should be running our entire medical system!
From a 4th year philosophy major: best teacher on campus, bar none. Really, really interesting class even though the rationalists can be a bit boring. Ask him about some of his own thoughts on saving Descartes, you'll be surprised. He really _thinks_,
Hey Kluge! just in case you're vain enough to check your ratings, I figured you'd be bummed not getting at least one bad one. just helping ya weed them out! I guess you're pretty smart - for a guy who watches trailer park boys.
the course material is interesting, however kluge self contradicts, his logic is inconsistent and he just may be the most ego-centric prof in BC, no matter how good a point you make his reply will be GET REAL& weird german sense of humor..
The pre-eminent biomedical ethicist in Canada and arguably one of the best five professors on campus. Demanding, intellectually rigorous, and engaging. You WILL BE CHALLENGED (and you'll learn, too). Go man, go!
Clear lecturer. Engages material. Presumptuous RE questions. Concerned primarily with imputing a position to the student/forcing them into a logical bind and only secondarily with helping them to articulate their ideas more clearly.
If it weren't for hippies this course would be so much better because Dr. K could actually get his points across instead of being sidetracked all the time. I would have enjoyed the course more if we talked more about the course instead of unrealistic 'what if' situations...Good guy though
fan bloody tastic. if you can get past his ego, which he certainly has the knowledge to back, you'll be floored by his skills. very simple class. very logical. if you can do lower level logic, you can get an a in his class.
Tremendous. Very useful for medical professionals.
kluge, oh, kluge... where to start? 1.this man knows EVERYTHING, 2.he knows you will find out, 3.in fact he counts on it, 4.he is right, 5.absorb what you can - it comes fast & heavy, so pay attention, 6.he is a hardass, 7.it is a schtick, 8.he is a great man, 9.learn, 10.it is a privilege, 11.enjoy
Kluge rocks. It is so refreshing to have a Philosphy prof who doesn't sugar coat anything, and doesn't humour stupid questions. Brilliant and hilarious.
Dr. Kluge was one of the best profs I have ever had. I still refer back to him - in fact I found this site because I was looking for a reference he had discussed in class (many years ago).
Eike-Kluge is very clear, consistent and always interesting. I have never been disappointed by class. He is highly knowledgeable in his field of expertise, and gives engaging lectures. A tough marker though.
E. Kluge has to be my favorite prof thus far. I am going to take every class he teaches. If you want to learn something, take his class. He is logical and fair, do your work and you will get a good grade.
Kluge did a great job with this class. As always he is clear, logical, and reasonable. The only problem with this course is that there is a _lot_ of material to cover. Very hard to keep everything straight. Make concise notes. The final was not representative, it was missing huge sections.
Amazing prof - changed the way I looked at EVERYTHING. So logical - you could have the most adamant opinion about whatever, and after one conversation with him, you'll actually apologize for ever thinking otherwise, lol. Tough marker though - but hey, "this is life...tough BINOS, for you..." .... take this course if your planning to be a doctor!
Amazing! The man is a genius. I feel privileged to take a class with him.
this is one of the dullest classes I have ever taken. he mostly just reads his notes for the lectures and then posts it on the internet. he spends most of the class talking about unrelated topics and ending each sentence with "oh.... never mind"
Fantastic! Come to class and you will learn so much. Easy to get an A, marks you as you deserve which is more than I can say for other phil-proffs. Great tangents in lecture, notes posted online clear and concise. tells you (over and over again) exactly what you need to know.
Kluge was funny as hell, clearly brilliant, and knows everything about bioethics imaginable. Kept his class interesting and he wants you to pass. He is very picky on exams and you won't be able to get away with not studying.

brilliany man
Hi, I just graduated and would like to comment on some memorable profs from throughout the years. It's hard to say what I would think about Kluge now, but I loved him when I was 20. I was aspiring to be a hardcore intellectual and here was Kluge, an example par excellence. I thought he was funny and obviously very knowledgeable. Would I still?
Seems a bit high on himself, but he's extremely intelligent. Don't argue with him: he's pretty much always right and he'll "cite you chapter and verse" from his sources. Doesn't concern himself with political correctness: he says it how it is and tough benos if you're easily offended. This class is completely relevant to real life.
Hilariously dapper gentleman!
Very funny and intellectually risktaking. Seems to often present his own views instead of the 'standard' view on many subjects. Kind of a bully in class, but it is difficult not to like the guy. Obviously an old pro.
A remarkable scholar, teacher, and human being; there is no person I respect or admire more greatly than Dr. Kluge. Keep in mind, though, his expectations are high- so put in the work and you will be richly rewarded. Any class by Kluge receives my highest recommendation, to students of any discipline.
Dr. Kluge arguably the best philosophy prof. at UVic. I have had Philosophy profs that were taught by him as undergraduates. He is probably the most well-read person I have ever met, and despite the fact that the content of the course is difficult at times, Dr. Kluge keeps the class fun and always interesting.
Very interesting teacher - the more he got off on unrelated tangents, in fact, the more I enjoyed class. With the way the actual material was taught, I was often left with the feeling I wasn't getting a fair presentation of all of the possibilities, and often already difficult to understand things were presented in an unnecessarily complex manner.
Best Professor I have ever had at UVic. He fills his classes with so much extra knowledge and is so engaging. Very well respected faculty member and a honor to have the chance to get to know.
provactive, interesting, but over-rated nonetheless
The material covered in this class was by far the most interesting of any class I've ever taken - and is directly useful for work in a health care setting. I definitely came away with an A+ worth of information from the class BUT Kluge lowered my GPA with a B - and because of his poor subjective marking I will not take any of his classes again.
An expert and unashamed of it.
A scholar and a gentleman. Most well-read professor I have ever met, I do not know anyone more knowledgeable than Dr. Kluge.
Biomedical ethics was one of the toughest courses that I have taken, and I was awarded my single lowest grade in all university years (B+). I worked super hard and could not have earned a higher grade. But...the I did learn a great deal, and Kluge is an expert for sure (and funny). I would not lower my GPA over a class with him again though.
He uses his expertise against people, particularly against students who have genuine questions. If you don't agree with exactly what he says, be prepared to sit through a frustrating course.
This was by far one of the most interesting courses I have ever taken - I learned tonnes. It was also one of the most difficult. Kluge is tough, but I think he's great. Listening to his experience with actual cases was really interesting. I'm sure this course will lower my GPA, but I think it was worth it.
Interesting man, but I recommend avoiding taking his class for credit. English is his second language, and unfortunately this affects his ability to understand his students. He has an uncharitable way of reading the history of philosophy (He says he would have failed Plato, Hume, etc). There are odd gaps in his knowledge. Do not take for credit.
A brilliant man who knows his material inside and out. Slightly arrogant, but still kind. I enjoyed his class and his stories immensely.
It is incredible how much information this man has in his head. Concise, to the point and accurate. He wrote the book on bioethics and it's extremely well put together. He is very difficult to please and has a high standard of education. He doesn't take any nonsense and will call you on it immediately. Take this class.
TAKE THIS CLASS!! This man made my day every time I went to class. Amazing knowledge, excellent teaching style, gives you more information than you could ever need for the tests. Material covered is interesting and applicable if you're looking to go on in medicine/ethics....once again...TAKE THIS CLASS!!
He is brilliant, concise and clear. He gets you to actually think. He will question what you say but, hey, this is philosophy, get use to it. Students who complain are usually upset because they didn't get a good grade, which is their own fault. Philosophy can be difficult but Dr. Kluge is one of the best teachers period I highly recommend him
Kluge is a brilliant man and an amazing professor. He knows what he is talking about, and I would strongly advise against arguing with him. His knowledge about the subject matter is vast and he gives fantastic real life examples. If you're in the philosophy department, you're missing out if you haven't taken a class with him!
Love this guy. He makes interesting material even more interesting by rattling off real life examples like nobody's business. Try not to argue with him and do the readings or else you're in for a rough time. He's a picky marker, but as long as you know your stuff you'll get by. Take this class, you'll be a better person for it.
Taken all his courses. After his class other profs seem like amatures. Head of the phil department.A master ofintellect and experience.Unfailingly logical and just. Inspiring perspectives about reality, ethics, government. A privaledge to listen to him speak. Inspired me to be a better person and to strive for intelligence and moral justice. The best
Best class I have ever taken, hands down. Best prof I have ever had, hands down. Don't be intimidated by this class. As long as you show up and pay attention you'll be fine. And it's definitely not hard to pay attention. The guy is a wealth of knowledge and the material is fascinating.
Very difficult marker. Exams are easy but marking is very strict.
He is the man. I've never had a more intelligent and engaging professor. Definitely recommend this class. The cases are really interesting and I found it easy to do well because we can bring notes into the tests.
What a guy! I loved this class and wouldn't have missed it for the world. Super interesting real world examples. He changed my whole perspective. Definitely recommend this class and him even though it was my lowest mark of the term. He's a very hard marker.
Took Dr Kluge's class while in nursing years ago.. Since then I have been avidly interested in every ethical issue that comes up. I think he is brilliant, and he certainly makes his students think! Which is the point of it all!!! Thanks to Dr. Kluge for adding much to the BSN program and LIFE
Probably the best prof I've had at UVic thus far. Some people found his tests hard although I'm not sure why, you can bring in notes so if you are properly prepared you'll hit this class out of the park. He's also super interesting so it makes going to class really easy. I would highly recommend him as a prof.
Best professor I have ever had
Really interesting course about current ethical issues in the medical field. He posts all the notes online so you don't have to attend all of the lectures. There are 2 midterms worth 20% each where you write a short essay about the ethical issues present in the medical case given. Make good notes bc you can bring in any notes you want for tests!
Best teacher I had at uvic! lectures were an hour and a half yet I wouldn't have minded if they were longer given that the lectures were so interesting. Funny teacher too with interesting experiences! Highly recommend taking his class.
Easily one of the best classes/professors i've ever had at UVic- his experience is incredible and has so many real life experiences to explain in lecture- A must take course for anyone wanting to enter Health Care. He truly is inspirational and the course content is so interesting- very very important to attend class and look over sample exams
Once I began learning about medical practices in Canada and Kluge's participation in it all, I could not believe how lucky we are at Uvic to be taught this class by someone who is literally THE guy of biomedical ethics in canada. Take this class - you will be changed. I learned SO much. Talk to him in office hours, he is very helpful and respectful
Although lectures aren't mandatory, I found it really beneficial to go to class. Besides him being hilarious (sometimes a bit combative), the way that he explains case scenarios in class really benefit you when it comes down to the midterms/finals.
I still use all of the information he taught me and his book in my other classes. He is a funny, intellectual and inspirational teacher. I would highly recommend taking his class! Best professor I have had in university.
From an academic viewpoint: it's quite hard to get a good mark in his course. BUT the course itself is REALLY good, and he's a very good prof--he knows what he's talking about 100%. The midterms are quite tough as you usually have to make a judgement call and hope you're correct. SHOW UP TO LECTURES, THEY'RE HELPFUL. Can bring in notes to tests.
Dr. Kluge is incredible-the most inspirational prof I've ever had. Be prepared to leave your emotions and religious opinions behind if you're taking his ethics class as he speaks the brutal, honest truth, and nothing less.
Great, smart guy. I got 75% final in phil 306 after failing on my midterm (he made the midterm exempt for students who wanted to instead make their final exam 80%). If you find he hasnt specified things about an essay such as font/citation, use MLA and follow your gut. He just wants to hear your argument and how you reason it. attend lectures too.
He's an engaging prof and the course material was very interesting. There was a lot of content, so it is not an easy credit (phil208), but you can do well, just attend regularly, do his study questions and read chapters.
Loved his lectures, brilliant, honest, thought-provoking. One of most memorable and prominent profs. He's super interesting and knows his stuff!
Amazing prof! His biomedical ethics class was incredibly interesting, a must take for anyone going into Healthcare. This class is easy to do well if you put the small amount of time in required by doing your readings. I would take this class over and over again if I could. ABSOLUTELY go in during office hours, he is a interesting dude.
Very engaging and interesting professor.
Very interesting prof and knows everything there is to know on this topic. Make sure you listen to everything he says and make a table of some sort to know the cases and when they apply. You can bring in whatever notes you want to the tests. This class really makes you think and is great for people interested in health care or a good heated debate.
I really liked Kluge! He explained ethical principles very well and made me take my critical thinking to a new level. Actually interesting to listen to as he uses a lot of real past cases. Remember, we will all die one day, somehow -- except Kluge, he's immortal. I just wish y'all would stop arguing with him about ethics, he's literally an expert.
The worst phil class I have ever taken. The content is interesting and his textbook is worth the read, but his attitude and unfairness aren't worth it. Spent all lectures arguing with students who were asking fair questions and talking about himself. Marking is completely arbitrary, no feedback, and based on his opinion. First midterm was a trick.
Super interesting prof, and loads the lecture with some pretty quality irreverent humour and anecdotes. 75% of the lecture was him arguing with the more outspoken and confrontational students, so I would say majority of learning takes place from the textbook or when you see him in office. (The first midterm was totally fair!)
Says lectures are mandatory if you want to do well but doesn't cover much material in them. Grades exams harshly so prepare lots of notes and make sure you know what he wants to hear.
I enjoyed Kluge as a prof. He is quite funny and you can tell he wants everyone to understand ethics in medicine. His tests are case studies and you have to be sure to include relevant legal issues and legal cases or else you will get a low mark. His powerpoint slides aren't the best, especially if you miss class and need to catch up.
Absolute legend. Probably the best prof I've ever had. My grade actually got worse the more I read the textbook because I was literally reading too much into it. We switched to online by the end so that didn't help. Go to his office hours he's a funny guy and make sure you LOOK AT THE DATA.
He was a really great prof! I highly recommend him. He has high standards, but personally I like this (not unreasonable standards). His lectures were super interesting and thought provoking. Also, if you get the chance to chat with him in office hours, he is just a really cool guy with a tremendous amount of experience, so well worth it!
Eike Kluge is a very interesting, and respected prof at UVIC and has been a prof and in the field for a long time. I don't regret in any way taking his course, however, do not expect this course to be a walk in the park, and do not miss class or you won't pass. The class material was very interesting and engaging, and it helps you think logically.
Good Prof. and elective choice. Not a grade booster, but getting an 'A' level grade is achievable if you prepare notes from the whole textbook (notes were allowed during exams). Dr.Kluge has a wealth of XP and will provide you with a view of the current ethical landscape in medicine. Office hours = Great. Go discuss end of chap cases + old finals
This course changed the way I think about the world. He teaches you how to think about ethical issues through a pragmatic lens, instead of being emotionally reactive. He says what he believes and backs up his beliefs with fact. Super interesting man with a lifetime of experience. If you Google him, you'll see the value in learning from him.
Very interesting and entertaining class with Professor Kluge. If you're going into medicine I would highly recommend taking this course with Professor Kluge. I took it as an elective for some reason and would not recommend doing that if you need a GPA booster. Super cool course & prof but I found it pretty difficult.
Benefits heavily from his students being inexperienced undergrads. Put him in a room of people who actually know something about disability + chronic illness and he'd be less impressive. Probably why he sticks to teaching undergrads and consulting with govt bodies that ALSO have no medical knowledge. Hides behind pragmatism; actually has huge ego.
I had a fantastic time in Professor Kluge's bioethics class. He has a wealth of knowledge in the field and all of his examples are previous cases that he was a part of. Slides where decently detailed and thorough, but most of the notes came from what he said. He will tell you about his personal backstory completely unprompted
He's entertaining and knowledgeable, but more time should be spent on showing how to apply theory and principles to cases. Lectures often focus on storytelling or off-topic discussions. I had high expectations for this class but haven't been overly impressed.
Kluge's ego is so big that when you question the content he is presenting, he often can't even comprehend the question being asked because he can't occupy a world where his ideas aren't the absolute truth. I would echo the comment that he benefits highly from teaching teenagers/people in their early 20's with very little life experience/knowledge.
This course was not well taught. Midterm averages were low yet way too much time spent talking about inappropriate things....He's old, he's tenured, he can say whatever he wants...
Class ended after 10 mins of him lecturing at least five times this semester. Tells us to go home and screw the pooch instead lol.
Spent 3 classes talking about the best ways to commit suicide and which arteries to target to do it well. Sure you can bring your notes but you're not taught how to apply anything. Went over 4 cases all semester. I never missed a class and did horribly.
On the first midterm I matched the answer key exactly, but I still landed in the B range. Subjective grading. This course reminded me of being handed a Gray's Anatomy textbook and told to work in the ER. You might have all the information and all the notes you need to succeed, but without clear guidance on how to use it, you're set up to fail.
I found that the prof struggles to answer questions in a way students understand. Furthermore, he only grades by a few things, such as two exams and one paper. He also posts lots of lecture slides, and I mean a lot. I have never had so much content in a course before. Would not recommend this course unless completely necessary.
Does not answer questions effectively. Good luck getting him to agree to meet with you during office hours- since he is rarely there or just will not show up. His exams and grading are subjective and honestly do not make sense. No clear grading criteria. I am not sure how students are supposed to succeed in this course. If they do, its by luck.
His grading is very subjective, and honestly quite rude to students as well. Stopped going to class after the third class of him arguing with students. Waste of time.
Look, at some point around 5-10 years ago, people seemed to have had a great experience with Dr. Kluge. Great. In taking 331 with him this semester, none of the previously described great things about Kluge seem to be there in this class. The slides are garbage, his lectures don't go much deeper, and he tests on things in neither lecture or slides
It seems some folks aren't very happy with this course. I actually have enjoyed the content and Dr Kluge teaches it well. With that being said, some of the lecture content is hard to understand if you miss a lecture. I have had to ask a lot of clarifying questions in office hours. Make sure you take notes quickly enough in lecture.
