Dr. Hotze is an awesome professor. Her lectures make learning fun and you certainly come out knowing more than when you went in. She is available outside of class, gives extra reviews, and gives fair tests. In lieu of homework, you just have more tests, but they are short and the material is manageable. I really liked the style of her class.
Dr. Hotze The BOMB DIGGITY. Every biology student should take her course to remember that there are actually good educators in the biology department. She's really funny and down-to-earth and tries to make large lectures feel a lot more tight knit. She'll always remember your name and jokingly tease you in class. FIVE STARS!
This class was incredibly enjoyable and we still learned! Dr. Hotze made what would be on the test very clear and was very fair when it came to grading. She was funny and made biology apply to life. Definitely take even if it's not a requirement!
Hotze is a great teacher. She makes class as entertaining as possible while still getting the information to you. She makes clear learning objectives which is extremely nice for study purposes. Tests are clear, short, and fair.
One of my favorite classes so far at KU. Amazing teacher, very engaging with the class by making a large lecture feel like a small class size. There was no homework in the class, just tests, but she held reviews where she went over exactly what would be on the test.; her lectures provided all the material you needed to know for the test.
Best professor I have had at KU! I loved Dr. Hotze! She cares about her students and actually lectures about what you need to know. Her tests were reasonably difficult but she held review sessions and the lecture material corresponded to the tests. She is a really great person overall, so if you are taking this class make sure she is teaching!
Dr. Hotzee is amazing. Teaches what you need to know and tests over exactly what she teaches, no tricks. She cares about everyone doing well and is very accessible and welcoming. She doesn't really teach out of the book, so going to lecture for the slides ( and clicker points) is important for your grade. Super easy to do well if u put in the work.
Hotze was so funny and such a straightforward teacher. Everything that was on the tests was right from the power points and the work load is not too much at all.
She is somewhat nice and respectful throughout the course, but is a horrible, mean, and unfair person when it comes to grading. Good luck.
Really cool person, funny. Wants class interaction/questions. Can be scatterbrained/confusing but will reexplain if needed. Supplements with online lectures posted. Tests are not too hard, provides quizlet/study guide. Lecture slides are hefty, can be annoying to take notes. Understand objectives-can easily get a good grade. Can skip on occasion.
Dr. Hotze is great! Interesting and engaging lectures + she is absolutely hilarious. She's always willing to explain stuff in more detail if anyone is confused. Tests are relatively easy if you glance at the study guide and pay attention in class. Cool lady who makes microbiology fun and relevant. Wish she could be my prof for all bio classes!
Hotze very friendly and makes class interesting. The textbook was not required but as someone who did not use it during the semester, I regretted not getting it. Lectures are full of material with powerpoints posted online but if you try and skip class and rely on her slides that will not work out. Go to class and take notes
Study from the study guides she posts, they're very similar to the tests. Her lectures are good but sometimes she goes off on tangents and even answered her phone once in class, I thought it was funny though. Understand how the processes work. The textbook isn't quite mandatory but very helpful. A lot of her quiz questions are from quizlet.
Great professor!! So funny and never makes anyone feel stupid. Always so helpful and caring.
She has really great exmaples and uses a lot of class time to demonstrate difficult material. Her tests are pretty hard, but she evens out the test points with homework.
Shes the best. You wont regret having her as your professor!
She was a good professor. She came prepared and made clear the expectations for every class and therefore what would be on exams. Do the reef polling/iClickers.
She was an amazing professor. I was terrified to take Biology 150 and she made the class go great. She sets extremely clear expectations as to what you need to know for the tests. I would highly suggest taking her if you can.
Dr. Hotze is AMAZING! She is so good at breaking down hard concepts and mechanisms and teaching them in an understandable way. I never got below an A on any of the tests. She really cares and wants you to do well, grading scale is 87% A-. Super accessible outside of class. Great teacher, made a tough class easy.
Dr. Hotze is a great professor. She has made so many concepts such as Cell Respiration clear. Be prepared to read before her lectures otherwise you will be lost during lecture time. She posts practice exams which are very helpful and useful for tests. Also, be prepared to work in Groups because groupwork tests your understandingof lecture content.
I loved learning from Professor Hotze. She made the material very easy and accessible and recorded all of the lectures, so if you really don't want to get up for 8am class, you don't have to. This year she also dropped one of the three tests, so I personally found it very difficult to get anything other than A in this class as long as you try.
absolutely terrible. She's not teaching anything. She talks all about her family and stuff. and you basically study by yourself and take the exams.
She is fun to listen to and lectures are recorded. You have to relisten to lectures to do well and read the book. One time 75% of the class got this problem worth 15% of the test wrong and she got mad at us for not understanding when she did not teach it. Test are difficult to understand. They are worth 70% of the class. Other 30% easy to get 100's
There's a lot of cushion with your grade, and you're able to drop one test. Most students did really well in the class. She also posts study guides and old exams, all are helpful. This was one of the easiest biology classes I have taken. Dr. Hotze really cares for her students, and you can tell she loves what she does.
lots of extra credit and easy grader
Her lectures were straight forward of what you need to know for the test. The book is not required but I would recommend using if you want to do better. She is easy to talk to and makes her students feel good.
While the class wasnt as easy of an A as I was hoping, Dr. Hotzes great lectures and guidance toward resources was a big help. Everything she goes over in class is at least somewhat important, and showing up is crucial, along with attending things like PLUS sessions. Shes very approachable, helpful, and nice I totally recommend her.
Dr. Hotze made lectures so interesting. She knows her stuff and is very nice. The way she broke down the class made the material easy to understand. She was very quick to reply to emails as well. Definitely recommend taking her class.
She was kind and worked to learn everyone's name in a 600+ person lecture. The information is at a very fast pace and you're expected to learn the material before lecture from the textbook. Homework almost every class. Exams are pretty accurate to what you learn in lecture.
1 group day every week-dont miss these. 5 Extra credit available on all tests, lowest scores in all categories are dropped. Just do all the homework and do okay on exams and youll be fine. She posts lecture slides online and pro tip, you can do clickers on your phone in your bed if you wanna skip. Final is the easiest of all her tests.
Such a classic gal. I loved coming to this class, the lectures were interesting and you can tell she cared about it too. Pay attention in lectures, go over notes and watch videos, and if you need to reading the book helps a lot. The tests are pretty easy, she doesn't ask about specifics, but just have a general knowledge about it each topic
very meticulous when it came to knowing the details of each topic. all the tests were applying the knowledge and then applying it to a situation, so you have to know the information that was in the unit and the information that was in the previous unit. if you don't go to class you won't pass because she goes over details that isn't posted online
Dr. Hotze's biology lectures were always enjoyable. Lectures were always very engaging and used iClickers as well as class participation to keep you focused. She would give out candy to students who showed proficiency in their participation. We had a group assignment to do every Friday in the lecture, which was a good break from the usual content.
I had a great experience in this class. Dr. Hotze's teaching was very clear and understandable. I never felt overwhelmed like I have in other classes. Dr. Hotze was one of the best professors I've ever had. She was very helpful, very kind, and I can tell she genuinely cares about the topic and her students' success!
AMAZING CLASS, AMAZING PROFESSOR. Dr. Hotze is great. I would 10/10 take her class again. Info is hard and you have to study to get an A, but it is attainable. She makes you understand the info and teaches in a way students understand. Phenomenal woman.
I had her for BIOL150 my freshman year, and I loved her so much that I took her for BIOL400. She provides clear information, and is very straightforward about what she expects in the class. Her lecture slides a full of very useful information, and she provides a decent outline of what is covered on the exams. I would 100% take another class of hers
This is one of my favorite classes I have taken at KU. Dr. Hotze's lectures were very interesting and there were no surprises on the exams. It was very obvious she cared about her students and their success. If you need help understanding the material, she or the TA's are more than happy to help. I wish I could take this class again!!
Took during COVID. She clearly wanted everyone to succeed. There were several different methods of learning: video lectures, Zoom meetings, discussion boards, homework, etc. Both she and her TAs were accessible. There was extra credit on every test, and she also dropped the lowest test from the final course grade. Overall, she was fantastic.
Dr. Hotze wants everyone to succeed! She makes every single effort to give online students the best resources possible. She makes the best efforts to make clear, concise powerpoints for students and note-taking purposes and assigns SUPER HELPFUL SmartBook Assignments that can easily be made into online flashcards in order to study for exams!!
Dr. Hotze was an amazing professor. She really cares that her students get the material down. Her lecture videos are great. I usually prepared for exams by reading the textbook, going over her lecture videos, and doing connect assignments. The questions on the exam were very easy and all stemmed from what she taught.
Dr. Hotze is probably my favorite STEM professor Ive ever had! Shes incredibly helpful and cares deeply about her students. She gives ALL the necessary tools to succeed, and was the only COVID class I feel like I actually retained material in. Shes engaging, funny, and easily accessible. 10/10!!!
Great professor but the content is conceptually challenging. If you put in the effort you should be fine.
Hotze was a very nice and responsive professor, but I found her lectures very hard to understand. Almost like having an iPad to take notes and pictures of the lectures with was an essential part to getting any kind of decent grade. Tests and quizzes were also confusingly worded which led to a lot of missed points in my opinion.
Hotze was an amazing teacher, she explained the material very well and always was available for help. She answered any and all questions you had and the grading criteria was given out right at the beginning of the class and what was expected. The material was not super hard you just had to put in some study time outside of class.
great teacher, keep up in lecture and you are solid, tests are fair. Would definitely take a class with her again, made me love biology
She is really willing to go over anything all you have to do is go up and ask.
Hands down one of the best professors at KU. Not only is the lecture simplified from the textbooks wording, but she is also a very funny person who makes the lecture even more entertaining. She doesnt round grades, but thats because she builds in bonus points to every single exam. Talking to other biology professors, she definitely is respected
Her classes require a lot of studying but the information you need is there.
Dr. Hotze knows the subject very well, but I think she forgets that us students aren't as familiar with the subject as she is. She uses a lot of unfamiliar terminology and goes really fast in lecture. I would STRONGLY advise reading the textbook sections that she's going to cover in class beforehand, and using the textbook to study as well.
Loved Hotze! She always was very clear on what we would be tested over and gives TONS of extra credit. You can tell she genuinely cares about her students and their well-being and is not afraid to stop and explain unclear topics. She makes an effort to connect with her giant lectures which says a lot about her. Tests are a big chunk of the grade.
It is clear Dr. Hotze cares about her students. A lot of material is covered in the class, but she does a good job making it doable. Go to office hours if you're struggling.
Eileen Hotze is the best thing to happen to KU biology for a long time. She truly cares about her students' success and wants the best for them. If you have problems, attend TA and SI sessions for extra help. The most important thing to worry about in this class is the exams, everything else is graded solely on effort and participation.
Hotze is literally the best professor ever. Her class is hard but doable and she is ALWAYS willing to help her students. Her lectures are hilarious and she's just a truly caring human being. I so wish she could teach all the biology classes at KU. She is AMAZING!
Dr. Hotze is easily one of the best professors I've ever had. Her flipped lecture structure made learning content that was somewhat difficult a lot less challenging. She always explained things well and I think it was overall a great class.
Before class prep is important for understanding lectures. Lectures include class participation which makes them more entertaining and productive for learning. It's obvious that she cares and I'd love to have her as a prof again. Something nice about this class was one exam was dropped, and there was a group presentation instead of a final.
Education recieved was not worth a cent in the real world
Dr. Hotze is a great professor. In a lecture hall of about 300 students you are still able to get questions answered and she stays after class most days to make sure. The lectures are engaging and she does a great job making sure the TAs are attentive when doing group work.
If you suck at memorization like me, you might have a tough time in this class. Mnemonic devices are your best friend. Dr. Hotze's awesome though, and does everything she can to make the class accessible. It's just a LOT of memorization.
Dr. Hotze gives you clear expectations of what you need to do to succeed in her class. This does not mean that the class isn't difficult. The lectures are hard to grasp, although she does a good job at explaining the material. She provides many resources for help. Going to office hours or TA sessions are extremely helpful, though not mandatory.
Dr. Hotze was an amazing professor, you can tell she really cares about her students. The exams are pretty content heavy but if you really put in the time, go to class, and start studying early you can do well. She offers extra credit for every exam and wants everyone to learn the material and do well.
Dr. Hotze is a great prof. However, if you are not STEM I heavily suggest not taking this course.. take BIOL 100 instead! I hella struggled and it can be difficult to keep up at times. Also, go to class for your iClicker points! Good luck.
Dr. Hotze is a great lecturer and presents new information in a clear, easy-to-understand way. The tests in this class were very easy multiple-choice questions and test for surface-level knowledge. As long as you go to class and pay attention, this class shouldn't be too difficult.
First class at KU, easiest class at KU. You have group work during class that is just like test questions and the tests are very easy. She makes sure students understand the material and is always willing to help. You should be able to get an A very easily.
As a freshman, I enjoyed taking BIOL150 with Dr. Hotze. She was very engaging during her lectures, which helped a lot given that this was an 8 am class. Her exams were pretty straightforward, and she offered extra credit as well. As long as you study on your own & put in the effort, her class should be easy.
The easiest 5/5 I've ever given on this website. Although the smartbook assignments are arduous time consuming, they contributed so much to my understanding of the content.
this professor's lectures were amazing! she follows along with powerpoint slides and write on the slides extra/helpful information. although attendance isn't necessarily required, iclicker. questions are utilized every lecture. so if you aren't there or don't answer the iclicker questions, that will harm your grade. tldr; go to class & take notes
Dr. Hotze gives great lectures and really tries to make sure students understand the material. This class seems difficult, but the professors make it quite easy. There are SO many opportunities for points- as long as you come to class and study an average amount, you will get an A. This class is always at 8AM, but the profs make it tolerable.
I absolutely love professor Hotze and all the biology professors. She make sure everyone understands the material and loves giving extra credit assignments. Granted the smart books are long and irrelevant (IMO) I didn't do majority of them and still passed the class. I recommend going to SI sessions they are the best.
Could not recommend Dr. Hotze enough. Material can be difficult, but if you put in effort its a smooth sail. Dr. Hotze was accommodating, realistic, and knowledgeable with every question. All exams were offered with the choice of taking online or in person, and plenty of extra credit was offered for every exam.
Dr. Hotze is an amazing professor and I was blessed to be a student of hers in my first biology course at KU! She is charismatic and prioritizes the student. Her exams are not very difficult and one is dropped in the course (including the final).
Dr. Hotze made the class fun and informative. It was not a monotone of lectures and had interesting TED talks. The exams tested exactly what we learned in class. If you rewatch the lectures you should be more than fine when taking the exams.
I have so much respect for Dr. Hotze. She is outgoing and kind and cares about the wellbeing of her students. Prepare yourself to move quickly through her lectures and notes. She speaks fast and flies through lectures even faster. Overall I loved her class, but be ready to do a lot of memorization.
Dr. Hotze is my favorite professor I've taken, and I'm in my 4th year. She provides you with all of the tools to do well. Her lectures were very thorough and easy to understand. She gives you study guides for the exams and practice exams online. Attendance is based on iClicker, you have to have 1/2 the points to get 100%.
Dr. Hotze is THE BEST. Micro with her was seriously one of my favorite classes ever, and her lectures were a lot of fun! There were so many resources for us to get help when we needed it, as well as her office hours which are perfect for just saying hi and asking any questions! I would not hesitate to take another class with her.
LOVE Hotze! She obviously loves lecturing about microbiology. She wants her students to be interested and engaged in the content. Participation is not required but encouraged because participation is not like answering tough practice questions, it's asking about your experiences, your opinions, and your recollection of terms from previous biology
I would probably pursue a PhD in microbiology if Hotze taught all the classes.
Hotze is one of the most incredible professors I've ever had, she cares about her students. She's funny, kind, and gives you many tools to succeed. It's a flipped classroom, but it actually works well for this class and she's always trying new approaches, incorporating student feedback, and answers your questions. Pinnacle of science education
Dr. Hotze was such a great professor to have. She was clear about expectations throughout the semester, was always available for students, and made her class engaging while keeping the coursework manageable. Highly recommend :)
Quite literally the best professor I have ever had. Genuinely cares about her students success and will know you by name. She is engaging, kind, articulate, fun, all-around a wonderful professor. Her office was always full during office hours and there were always students staying later to chat. Makes difficult content easy and fun to navigate!
Dr.Hotze is amazing! She is considerate of her students and easy to talk to. Lecture videos are a bit disorganized, but in-class lectures help. The online homework is VERY time consuming, DON'T put it off! I took it in Spring where she does group work. Be careful, the big group project can sneak up on you because you don't get much time in class.
I would literally die for Eileen Hotze I am not even a little bit joking. she is the best professor I have ever taken at KU, and if she taught every course for me I would have a 4.0 fs.
She is a wonderful teacher and the lectures are made very well and easily understandable. She is super caring (don't get on her bad side) but she aims for everyone to succeed if they try.
The best biology class I have taken at KU! Hotze genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Highly recommend this class for anyone remotely interested in micro. She lectures make the topic engaging and interesting!
I know everyone says this, but Dr. Hotze is truly amazing. She made me feel so welcomed/excited for class. I have a strong interest in biology now due to her. You kind of have to lock in during the lectures-they go fast. She gives lots of credit to help balance (even EC). Def had to study for the exams but what she taught is what was on there-10/10
If I could profess my undying love to Dr. Hotze I would. Lectures were an amazing experience. She's incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. If you interact with her directly, she WILL remember your name. Study guides were useful and were very helpful for exams. The McGraw Hill assignments were tedious but useful if you take notes! #Hotze4Life
