great! very helpful, super nice. uses a lot of examples, we do a lot of activities that help understand the subject better
just go to class. take down all her notes for socio 1 and study. she makes you buy a booklet with all her powerpoints in it. she says its the key to getting an A. shes not lying. EVERYTHING IS IN THERE. just study the terms and you will get an A, easy, if you get to it, do her SIMSOC extra credit, its AMAZING.
Funnest Sociology class i have taken, good teacher, very intersting subjects
Enjoyed her class very much. Shes very clear on her lectures breaks it down so you will understand. Do her work that she requires, show up to class and pay attention, study for tests and you'll get an easy A. wasnt interested in sociology but after her class i think im changing my major. One of thr best teacher ive ever had.
i have so much fun with her. i took this course at summer. there are so much fun. her lecture note is very useful and the test is base on it.
best teacher everrr. shes pretty young and so her perspective is very much easy to relate to. shes very understanding and easy to talk to. just dont mess with her because when shes serious she means business. love her!!
Very fun and relatable lectures. Had no interest in sociology prior to the class but now i want to minor in it! Tests are easy and are all related to the readings and lectures.
I love this teacher. Not only is she attractive but very smart. After you take her class you will see everything in a different perspective. Her lectures are interesting aswell. very fun prof u want to have. only 3 tests and 2 assignments the whole semester. and if you want extra credit you can do SIMSOC its an amazing experience :) Recommend her
very unorganized
Read, read, read the book!! if u dnt read the book u will not pass the class. all assignments and tests are based on the book and lectures which also come from the book.
Took her winter class. She is a hard working reflective person.Highly Recommend. EASY A!
Personally, i didnt find use to the book. i never opened it, thats how well she explained things through. she does not use stereotypes and if u try to challenge she does not reject your ideas, simply proves her views and knowledge of the subject clearly. she is very helpful And the tests are pretty easy if u listen and study the notes. the BEST!
Although this professor is extremely intellligent she is disorganized in her instructions and syllabus. There is a lack of collaboration with students in her class. Does not make the So called academic environment safe for debate. She will dock pts off at the end of the sem if she did not agree with your position. Not worth the risk.
Great Instructor, interesting class, not much use of the book, go to her class daily to understand concepts, study ur lecture notes, hand in ur assignements, participate in class and get an A, if u want to make a comment in her class be prepared to back it up
she only gives 3 test and 2 assignments and your grade is based on that.. i dislike it there should be more work to get more points!!!
Soc 1 was so cool! I didn't know anything about sociology but now I can't see things any other way. Prof. Ie is really helpful. You just have to do the work. If you need help, she will help you but she doesn't like slackers.
Took her for Race and Ethnic Relations and learned SOOO much! Ileen is tough but helpufl. She expects a lot from her classes but it was worth it. Would definitely take her for another class.
Im currently enrolled in Professor Ie's Into to Soc class for summer. I have to say, I really enjoy her class! Im not sure if she teaches differently during longer semesters, but I think she is a great professor :) Funny, very helpful, passionate about sociology. As long as you study the lecture notes & do the writing assignments, you'll pass :)
This class was an interesting. I had a love and hate relationship with this class, but its necessary to read the book, and lecture notes are not that important to class for $15 bux.Three multiple choice exams and three papers. Test are not hard, but the papers have to be well written. Tough class, but learned a lot. Overall fun class if you speak!!
She is only easy if you study & pay attention. Her lectures are fun & interesting. I looked foward going to class. Text not required, just use lecture notes/slides (that u have to buy) Overall, i love the class!! She's awesome & chill!!
Very fun class and very informative at the same time. Leave any sense of shyness at the door and you'll do great. Her tests are pretty direct and straight from the readings...nothing impossibly difficult...just read. Essays are moderate difficulty. Very fun teacher and is definitely not afraid to ask the awkward ?s most people don't like to ask.
She's great! You vibe off of her passion. I've taken her for Soc. 1, 11, and 21. Play SIMSOC if you enjoy her class.
She is very helpful & fun. She makes all class discussions interesting and she has a great vibe. She loves what she teaches so you learn alot. She really makes you think outside the box. One of the best teachers def recommend to my friends. If you study, read and pay attention in class this class is easy and great.
I thank my lucky stars I got to experience Eileen Ie's teachings! I was never bored. And for the final, I savored every question, as this would be the last time I would come to my, now, favorite class. Tests are NOT hard, class is NOT hard...but maybe thats because I attended class, somewhat read the book, and paid attention passionately.
I can't express just how much I LOVED her Sociology 11 Race & Ethnic class!! Seriously the class is not difficult at ALL. Just read the small textbook & lectures notes as you go through each chapter and GUARANTEED you will pass. She is super down to earth and funny. I DEFINITELY recommend her.
Great professor. Highly recommend her. Not a very easy class, but she's very helpful and highly knowledgeable. you will learn a lot in her class
Great teacher! I enjoyed her class very much. Her lectures are very interesting. Thank you Eileen keep up the great work!
100 multiple choice questions easy if you study. plus she gives out 4 topics to learn for each test and on the day of the test she picks out 2 out the 4 topics and u do an essay on them. All this has to be done in an hour and a half!!!!! do not recommend her!!!!!!This was after she decided her class was too easy!!!!!!!now it's just ridiculous
Eileen made soc4 very manageable, she is great! Any issue you have/if any will be with your group. Choose your group members wisely! I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. The majority(80+%) of your grade is based on work you do w your group. Make sure your group members have the same availability as u! I'm serious!
Professor Eileen is good but I didn't like the way she grades because it is very unpredictable. She gives a lot of work. You need to take pictures and then analyze it for each chapter. There's also clarifications. You will need the book. You will learn a lot from here, but she can be very unorganized.
She's a great professor who cares about her students and wants them to succeed in their education. Attendance is key(trust me), read the book. Discussions in class are great & she wants everyone's input. I learned a lot in her class. She's always available to talk if you need help/guidance. Grading is fair! I recommend her 100%. Ignore - comments.
She is a great professor and very approachable. Class is tough but you learn a lot. Just go to class, pay attention, read the book. Take this class you'll learn. Why take a super easy class with someone else when you probably won't learn with them. TAKE PROFESSOR IE.
I love love love love love love Ms. IE! She amazing great teacher and she helped me figure out that I love Sociology and Helped me get ready to transfer!! She really tries to help you not only as a teacher but as a mentor too!! Take her and you wont regret learned a lot.
Book is required. Shes a very hard grader. Theres a quiz after each chapter. Assignments are hard b/c she makes you analyze everything, literately. Even if shes tough with the work she makes class worth while. Class was amazing. Halfway threw the semester I was in the border line of a C/D but I didn't dare dropping the class because it was good
Professor Eileen is the best! I'm currently taking her for the Winter session and I love her class! She's a tough grader, but that's because she teachers her class with academic rigor because well...it's supposed to be a college class! She ensures discussion is carried out in class to ensure understanding. She's also super approachable and helpful.
She's one of the best professors I've had in ELAC. She is a tough grader, but the workload isn't too much. Students will turn in their work via Etudes. Don't be scared though, you'll be working in groups for most of the semester.
I got a C in the class and I was disappointed in myself. Prof.IE made it very clear what was needed to do well in her class and made me a better writer as a result. I wish I worked a little harder. I loved her class and her insight on the subject. Looking forward to taking another one of her classes!
easy grading system. she tells you what you need to do from the get go. if you need this course for credit i suggest ms. ie. make sure you show up and take her advice on taking the practice quizzes. there are quizzes every week, no tests, and 2 big papers
A double agent, unorganized and harsh teacher! Her notes are all her view. But she needs you to do papers like graduate school level. quizzes are random; you would never know what will be included in the quiz. No A in the class. This is my first B in college. If a student sees college is playground just take her. She will give you B or C even fail
Very knowledgeable, she knows her stuff and will help if you seek help. However, she gives out tricky quizzes (not multiple choice) and tells you to answer each question in 90 seconds but really it's more like 30 lol. I don't like her style of testing personally but whatever. Oh and expect to write a grad school level paper.
Great professor. Knows what she is talking about and is really passionate about sociology. The class requires a lot of work, you will be writing a research proposal in APA format but you will turn sections of it in at a time. She gives feedback on all the assignments and invites students to meet with her so there is no reason why anyone should fail
Professor Eileen is pretty awesome. She's very knowledgable in the subject matter and is truely passionate about her work. Yes she can be a bit tough when it comes to grading papers but this is college. You will need the book, but you also have her lecture notes which are great supplementary material. Play sim soc if you enjoy her class
Everyone who is complaining about professor Eileen is not ready for college and the real world. She is passionate and has knowledge on the material she teaches. I like how open she is and yes she is a tough grader but this is college and at least she is preparing her students.
Welcome to college. It so refreshing to take a course that challenges the student to work hard for their grade. This class will prep you for upper division courses. Professor IE is actually interested in helping students achieve their highest potential and to further there studies after graduating ELAC. Any socio major will appreciate this prof.
Professor Ie is one of the best professors at ELAC! This is definitely not an easy A. If you're ready to be challenged I highly recommend this class.
Worst professor I have ever had.
Professor Ie is an amazing professor! She is so dedicated and in love with Sociology. You will definitely have to work to get an A in her class. Nonetheless, she definitely prepares you to transfer to a university. Last but not least, choose your group members wisely!
There are much better options in professors available at Elac. If I had the option again with the information and experience I now have about professor Ie, I would have definitely not selected any of her course offerings.
Professor Ie's lecture style is rather dry. She bases most of her lectures on her own personal opinion rather than widely accepted sociology research and theories. Her tone of lectures is very condescending and unwelcoming to students. I would not recommend.
Horrible experiences in Ie's class. She's very unprofessional. She as the professor was often running late to class. Also often cancels class last minute as well as office hours without ample notice. As ELAC is primarily a commuter college, this is extremely inconvenient to students. Felt she did not value our time.
I was disappointed by my time in professor Eileen's class. I ended up dropping her course after the first few weeks to secure a spot in another soc class with a better professor. I felt that Eileen did not create a good atmosphere for learning. She spoke with a harsh tone, came to class unprepared, and often seemed to be "winging it" content wise.
Professor IE, is the reason I'm majoring in sociology. With that said, don't expect an easy A you will have to work for it. You will have readings assigned other than the text book material, which are very interesting. Quizzes are given weekly, which are not that hard if you do the readings. This is college what do you expect!
Snooze fest. I was unimpressed despite good reviews listed below. Boring lectures. Aloof professor. Unresponsive and vague to student questions and unable to cultivate meaningful discussions.
Guidelines for work expectations as well as grading criteria are not specific or clear. Often conflicts with actual information provided by Eileen. She is not especially patient with students and their requests for clarification on assignments or course materials. I would not recommend this professor at all.
I would not recommend this professor. Unclear grading system, lack of constructive and meaningful feedback on assignments, lecture style is hard to follow.
Tests are a mystery. Teacher spends most of time off topic. I would recommend taking another teacher.
Mediocre professor. Lots of dry lectures in my opinion. Papers, to be expected. Pretty cut and dry, run of the mill. Borderline boring.
Grading isn't very clear nor predictable.
Long assignments. Difficult and tricky tests. Vague feedback. Boring lectures.
Lectures are unorganized and often do not match syllabus goals and objectives. Professor is easily led astray from lecture topics and then gets caught up sharing her opinions about other topics. She does not modify assessments/papers due to match what she covers in class. work has to be done individually at home since class time is unfocused
Does not do a good job engaging students. Boring and dry lecture style.
Not recommended.
Too many papers assigned. Group assignments were also disorganized in terms of expectations and grading. Class size decreased dramatically throughout session due to conflict and lack of support from Eileen.
I went to Ie for academic help multiple times and she was rude and dismissive. If you are looking for a professor who will care about you and create an atmosphere condusive to learning, this is not the professor for you.
Lectures her personal opinions and ideology. If you don't conform to her ideas, you won't do well in participation, written papers, or comfort level within the class.
Heavy lecture style. Very narrow minded discussion views placed on students without any accommodation for a variance or in thought. Ie approaches students with critical thinking skills and varied opinions with defensiveness and hostility. Not a positive or welcoming learning environment.
Do not take this professor. She is rude and impatient with students.
Worst professor that I have ever had.
Boring class topics for discussions. Very little input or authentic participation actually expected. Ie prefers that you simply agree with her point of view and mindlessly regurgitate it.
Redundant and mediocre lectures. Topics discussed and posed were very surface level and rudimentary. Ie's teaching does not stretch a student to become academically better or more knowledgeable in sociology - it's like she's personally phoning it in and has very low expectations and hopes for her students.
Lectures hard to follow as professor's lecture style is unorganized and all over the place.
Sparse meaningful feedback provided to students on assignments. Grading across assignments seemed inconsistent. I found that teacher was not available consistently for office hours to discuss progress or provide help.
Extremely lecture heavy class. Dry, monotone, and boring lecture style. Prepared to be talked at.
Bland course. Lectures were tediously boring. unfortunate as I was excited to take soc. But found that Eileen's teaching of soc really made the content drab and boring. I'm turned off by the subject now thanks to her.
Lost one of my papers and refused to give me credit for it.
Inconsistent grading from professor.
She is very unorganized. I feel she doesn't want students to succeed. You are not allowed your own opinion, whatever you say is wrong. She doesn't reply to emails. When you ask her a question about something she says she doesn't understand you to just stick to whateve she said. She changes the gradidng rubric often.
Eileen is a great professor that's made me love Soc even more. She tries to make sure that the class is engaged and if the syllabus needs modifying, she lets the class decide. If you want an A, you have to work for it. She has plenty of office hours and is willing to go over concepts that you don't understand 1-on-1.
I've taken a few of the soc professors here at elac. Eileen is my least favorite of the lot so far. I would not recommend her.
Extremely unprofessional. In the last week she arbetrarily cancelled class and office hours at the last minute. Considering most ELAC students pay their own tuition and are hoping to transfer out soon to a four year, we deserve professors equally invested in our education. Not lazy ones such as Eileen Ie.
She is a good professor. She is easy to talk to and pretty cool. She's actually pretty fair in her class and if you don't try the you obviously won't do well. You will learn a lot trust me
Would not suggest. Read another review here that said they didn't feel like they were "allowed their own opinion" and I can understand that feeling. I often felt like the Professor did not see my point and then devalued my opinion in curt ways. If this professor were a doctor then I would say the professor has a "poor bedside manner".
I am very grateful to have Eileen as my professor and will take her again in fall. The knowledge I obtain from her and the class was unforgettable.
Eileen is one of the best professors I have ever taken, and one of the best at ELAC in my opinion. She is clear from the beginning what she expects from you as her student. Her class is informative and very entertaining. She is caring and wiling to help you and is there for office hours. Would highly recommend her! Human sexuality was awesome!
Professor Ie was very lecture heavy. Not engaging in her style. I would not recommend.
Slow pacing. Doesn't follow syllabus.
Agree with reviews below. Lectures are heavily Eileen's personal opinions. There was not too much room for discussions or varied opinions.
Hard to understand lectures. Topics and theories often conflict with the material read in books. Eileen comes off as a very green professor still attempting to find her footing in academia.
Eileen is a tough grader. However, it is not difficult to do well in her class if you attend class and engage in her lectures with notes already written down from readings assigned for the chapter. Her class and work is largely structured around outside readings and her lectures. If you can keep up with heavy reading you will do fine as she is fair
Tough grader.
Eileen is a boring lecturer. Make sure to read.
Eileen provided less support than other sociology professors. Both in office hours, availability and willingness to answer student questions, and through email.
Lots of busywork.
Extremely lecture heavy. Non-engaging.
Boring instructor.
Boring lectures.
Stale discussions, tired assignments.
All you've got is the textbook, she doesn't upload lectures/notes. Only 10 chapter assignments, but she only selects two to factor into your final grade. She doesn't grade any of the other 8 and you only get feedback on whatever she grades, so it feels like there's little room to improve. It's easy to ace quizzes but the online system is annoying.
Learned so much in her class. Eileen is one of the best I've had at ELAC and genuinely cares about students.
Lots of in class discussion. Sex positive. She never cancels class.
One of the best professors EVER! Not sure why she got so many low ratings. Maybe she teaches online different than in person. She made me switch my major to Soc! You can tell she loves her job because she's so enthusiastic.
Lots of papers to write for this class.
Grading procedures were unclear for assignments. Little to no feedback was provided between assignments making it difficult as a student to improve.
Lecture heavy.
Lectures are confusing. Often important information is skimmed over while the bulk of the time is spent on Eileen's personal opinions. Not helpful teachings for real world psychology if you as me.
I had a bad experience with communicating with this professor. She was disorganized and disrespectful of students. Beware.
horrible professor she hardly responds to your emails and is very unclear and critical, she grades unfair don't waist your time but after taking it I felt very discourage she only grades two unanimous chapter analysis, introduction and quizzes the rest of the assignments don't count so the rest of your hard work and time don't count.
We had to write 10 paper, but she only graded 2 of them. She is the most tough grader I've seen so far. It is very difficult to communicate with this professor because she is very biased when it comes to sociology. She doesn't let you speak out your opinions. So far the laziest professor I've taken at ELAC
Professor Eileen is an amazing teacher. She is different from many, she may seem firm and tough but she is truly caring and extremely smart. She may be blunt at times which may be intimidating but she is very interesting and cool. soc 4 is different from other sociology classes but it is worth it! Take her if you truly want to learn! She is the best
worse professor i have ever taken.
By far the worst professor at ELAC so far. Narrow minded and demeaning to students.
Super boring lectures and discussion topics. Eileen doesnt have good classroom management or even the ability to lead discussions in a calm and respectful way.
Class is really hard. Do not take if this is your first semester.
I took this class a few summers ago before transferring to UCSB and it was the only class I took at ELAC that stands up to the classes I'm taking now. Eileen knows her stuff and cares for students. This class is the reason I decided to major in soc.
Dated practices. Mostly lecture.
i took her for human sexuality. it was a small class of about 10 people. she has an immense knowledge on the subject. we would do socratic seminars and long summaries on each of the chapters. she would grade up to 3 socratics and 3 summaries random. THE CLASS IS NOT HARD, YOU JUST HAVE TO STAY ON TOP OF YOUR WORK BECAUSE IT WILL PILE UP.
Lecture based.
Professor Le is one of the most helpful online professors I met. I wish I had met her in person. Her class consists of weekly quizzes, 3 small papers, and extra credit opportunities. It's extremely hard not to get a good grade in her class. She's the person that will make sure you understand the material via email or discussions.
I was excited about sociology until sitting though Eileens drab lectures.
So many amazing articles (Sociology Reads) and PodCasts! I definitely wish I had taken her in Fall or Spring to get more in-depth with Sociology. I took her class in Winter and I felt it ended too soon! (lol) Also, she is very organized (big plus - especially for an online class).
Hands down my favorite professor at ELAC. She really cares that you have a deep understanding of the material. She's very organized and dedicated to being a good professor. Very well-spoken so you're never confused or feel like the lecture drags on. There's a lot reading and a lot of work though. It's not difficult but it requires a lot of time.
Online course. Disorganized instructor. Not available for questions or to provide students with feedback
Worst professor I have encountered at Elac. She doesnt even bother to read all of your papers submitted.
Professor Ie has an amazing sociology class. The material is so interesting because you're learning how society affects us personally plus the uprising of social problems. The class consists of a lot of reading and watching videos but they're fantastic! Graded based on the tests only so you must know your material. Overall, I loved this class!
Boring professor. Lecture only.
Took a long time to get papers back. Feedback minimal.
Rude professor, short with students and is not helpful in their learning.
she does expect you to attend office hours but that is actually helpful because she can give you feedback to increase your grade. if you are struggling she is flexible and very helpful. Don't hesitate to ask questions and passing this class is POSSIBLE just need to be fully engage and do the work. Dont feel discourage and seek for help you go this!
Unfortunately my review matches so many other users listed below. Boring lectures and less than prompt responses via email and feedback on papers.
Eileen often was not on time for her posted office hours which is 1. Unprofessional and 2. Inconvenient for students.
Out of touch professor with todays modern Sociology standards.
I took her for an online class and it was the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. The class is graded between quizzes and assignments. The quizzes are really hard some of them are in the book but for some of them you have to watch videos and read articles. She is a hard graders for assignments especially on plagiarism "Cite Everything"!!!.
Her lectures are great, makes you understand by telling stories along with the topics being discussed in class. Textbook is only a few $ made up of of articles and stuff. She grades you by participating in "socratic seminars" which is a group of 10 people (randomly picked) who go over the article they were assigned the week before. Study for exams!
Minimal effort was put in by this professor to help students
Inconsistent grading
Was not available for office hours
I took this course as my first online class at ELAC, & it was A LOT of reading. You need to read and understand the readings. 1. she provides the main text book as an online copy 2. she had us purchase a made text book of excerpts from other books (25 bucks) 3. videos are all linked on the modules on what to read/watch each week.
Confusing lectures conflicting with expectations for work.
Dr. Le is amazing! I took her for SOC001 online and it was my first online class ever and she made me love it! Yes you do have to read. Write ups every other week along with having to watch videos or listen to podcast, If you do that youll pass the test. Office hours available. Replies back to emails quickly! Will be Taking other course with her!
I took this class right as corona was starting. However, even then she tried to ensure our success in her class. Each week is structured the same. Reading, discussion, quiz. They are simple and easy to manage if you stay on top of it. Overall if you are interested in this class and are willing to put in the work, take it. you will be better for it
super tough grader, less quiz but not easy, course material combined with assigned reading material ( broadcast, videos), must do every single seminar discussion. if you are not a good writer do not take this class!
Found multiple profiles for the teacher but I'll review here. You have 2 different curriculums (Pajo or Blackstone). We chose Blackstone. You can complete the work alone or with a group. The textbook was also free/online. The assignments are also separate (don't build upon each other). Quiz & HW each week w/ reflection at the end of the semester.
Interesting and learned a lot. Each week is basically reading articles and a chapter from the book (online/free), quiz, and discussion. The discussion takes more time but it really helps with understanding the topic of race/ethnicity. There are also some reflections. Great class and definitely one I would remember later on :) (be good at writing)
Clear grading criteria, she makes you work for your grade, I highly recommend her.
Super super super tough grader! I completed all my quiz with full credit, but I still get B after midterm. Not sure final grade, but I'm so worried about it.
I took this professor for spring 2022, and this class is very easy, she gives you 3 options in which you want to do to either get an A, B, or C. The only thing about this class that I don't like is that she doesn't post your grade until the end of the semester, but other than that this class is worth taking, very chill and easy class.
Isn't clear on grading
Shes a very straightforward professor. Her syllabus if very easy to understand and everything should be easy as long as you dont fall behind. Be careful with due dates and ask her questions shes very helpful and always replies asap. Shes also understanding and interactive with her classes, would take again if i had to.
