She kind of drones on in class and grades tests hard.
Very good at making you understand and keeping you interested.
very unorganized, would take again
is boring tests r hard and is very boring grades r hard too
Great professor, makes learning fun realizes that the subject can be a little dry and compensates for it, explains material very well, gives great examples / analogies!!! tests are very fair ( all multiple choice ) best class i ever took!!!
Knows alot except how to teach. Fair exams though(group)
There are very few professors at SMC that know their stuff, and Professor Rabach is one of them. The course I am taking is a bit slow, but that is only becaues Prof. Rabach takes the time to include class input on relevant issues to the course.
the lecture is hard to understand, doesnot make any connection with the book. She drops you anytime she wants. Boring class overall. C is the best grade u can achieve.
I really like this lady, but I had the hardest time following her lectures. She lets you know up front that she has a <ahem> unique style of lecture, so if you like your lectures a bit more organized take someone else. Otherwise, just read the boo
she's all over the place, but her class is fun and i'd def take another class with her
Rabach is a really nice teacher who is always willing to help. The problem is that she is all over the place. Her lectures have no structure so your never sure what to study. If there are easier teachers to take I would, but her class is not that bad
Great techer. If you work you will get a B for sure. A you got to earn it but all the extracredits make it easy
For such an international student as me, following her lecture is quite difficult. She has her "own" language and the textbook always is put aside. However, when you can follow up her lerture, you'll know she is a very brilliant professor. Try h
worst ive ever had she is terrible insults students a lot as well
A nice Professor, she is willing to help student who wants to know anf get A or B. To earn those grades you need to interactive with her, and what she teachs. Recommanded.
Feminist written all over, but that said, she is fair, intelligent and insightful, if you can keep up with her for an hour of ranting. Not hard to get a B in her classes, but A requires prip and proper effort. Another brilliant professor in SMC!
Dr Ellen Rabach is one of the good professors in SMC. She has the ability to teach, teachs clearly and well. She only ask for three multi choices tests. Do the book and look a any macroeconomics study guide you will get a B easy. A? work!
The best professor I've had so far. I totally recommend her.
Professor Rabach may seem a little dazed and confused on the outside, however she is actually on top of things. Attendence is important, as is speaking in class and letting her know you care about the topic.
Great Professor. I strongly recommend her to any students interested in Economics!!
Awesome proffesor! very interesting and inteligent class. Definetly participate and pay attention. Great material covered
She is an amazing teacher who really loves her work. Her tests are extremely difficult to decipher. You spend most of the time figuring out What is actually being asked...even if you know the info it is really hard, but she gives ample opportunity for extra credit. Still...Very Interesting!!!!
Certainly bright and knowledgeable, but a poor teacher. Very disorganized; don't waste time planning your work. She fails to teach to the test. Instead of covering core material she wastes time with student discussion groups, even an "election forum" that had no tie to the curriculum.
Dr. Rabach is one of the rare great prof. at SMC. She is tough and demands much more from her students than the average teacher. Her insight on basically any topic is invaluable. If you have a thirst for knowledge and don't mind working take her classes. Her IPE class is the best course at SMC.
GREAT TEACHER. emphasizes student progress and gives great insights into International Political Economy. respects all POV.
DO the EXTRA CREDIT!!!
professor rabach is a horrible teacher.the other comments completely emphasize her lack or organization.she grades extremely unfairly, especially on papers.her tests have nothing to do with the lectures and the text book is horrible.i do not recomment EVER taking her course.
Passionate about her subject. I went in unintrested in econ.I left educated and thankful I took her class.Great teacher!!!
I sincerly suggest you don't take this class. Unorganized lectures, obscure reading, a project which is quite difficult and not explained well. Please do not suffer, school is supposed to be fun. This class is so unorganized you will feel you have no idea of what is going on in class. Don't take
Passionate teacher, loves the subject and makes it relivant by application not just reading the books. Grades on effort and how you apply the information. Yes, her test are hard, but so much extra credit! I make C's on the tests but participated and did extra and made an A in all 3 of her classes!
I took Rabach my first semester and it was the worsth start. Rabach lectures like you are an economist. Dont take her if you dont know about economics.
Complete sweetheart - I faired poorly in the class, but it was my own doing - no fault to her. Gives a ton of extra credit, has an underlying smart ass quality that's really charming if you can catch it. Very helpful; often too wise for her own good. Definitely not an easy ride, and there may be better econ teachers, but I side with her.
She is a mediocre teacher, very biased, "Bleedin-Heart Liberal". So, if you are a "Tree-Hugger", you will be embraced and charished by her. Those, who count on the open, intellectual discussion--give up!
She seems slow.
Anyone who doesn't like her has a political bias. Her tests are hard, her extra credit huge, and overall she has the heart of a saint. Her only hang up is disorganization. You could spend the whole semester trying to find out where you are truly at on the syllabus. This is underscored by the vast amount of critical thinking you gain.
She does an exceptionally well job at teaching economics -- by far one of the best professors at SMC. Most qualms brought up on this board are completely unjustified. Economics isn't the easiest class/major, and these cursory classes cover a broad spectrum of material. If you think she's a bad professor, try the business/real world -- wake up!
Extremely hard to get A in her class,Even though u hv hand in a lot extra credit,,
heart of a SAINT my ASS!..... heart of stone... ouch!
Rabach is smart and knows her stuff, but if your knowledge of Amer Hist and Macro Econ is weak, you will feel lost. Unbelievably disorganized. Tests are very hard; questions are vague and confusing. Student led discussions a waste of time. Gives poor direction for papers; lectures hard to follow, lousy handouts. She means well, but it was painful.
Really smart lady, teaches at a graduate level so the class is VERY difficult. explains little. entire class is out of wack. wastes lots of time on discussions that are irrelevent or videos that don't help. If you can read AND comprehend 350+ pages of boring econ history without a teacher's assistance, then this is for you. tests are quite ambiguous
Want an easy "A?" Do not take the class. This course envokes much work. But, you will learn more from her than possibly anyone else. Brilliant woman, period. Interesting class with a great textbook. In a class such as this, the end result is to learn. This course is the epitome of that goal. Not for the timid nor is it for the beginner.
Incredible instructor! Challenging class giving you a foundational understanding with which to fathom so much in America, and the world, today. Take advantage of the generous opportunities for extra credit. Tests require you to have comprehended the material - regurgitation is not enough. She has a great and subtle sense of humor. The best!!
Dr. Rabach is very intellegent professor that I have came faced with in SMC. I find that she needs to be organized. She can be rhetorical sometime but, don't take it personal. She gives a lot of extra credits but, not sure how that affect the grade. She gives very hard test that most of classmates failes. Over all I personally favor Dr. Rabach.
Very intelligent and passionate. She has excellent conceptual knowledge and opinions of what she teaches. She shows an incredible amount of interest in her students, as well. Texts are interesting (3 paperbacks, don't even have to read completely) and assignments are creative. I had little interest in economic history but she makes it compelling.
oh she was INCREDIBLY disorganized. don't take her. lectures and her test don't make sense. nice in person but shouldn't be teaching.
People who whine and dine here are just a bunch of little kids who are supposed to be still stuck in high school. Rabach is the best econ professor in campus unlike other econ teachers who shouldn't get paid for what they teach. You will actually learn and open your eyes to reality. Grades come from your work.
The class was hard... i got Cs on all the tests...i talked to her, she knew i was working hard... i did the extra credit and got an A!!!i love her
I like Dr. Rabach. The class is hard, and I'm trying. But I find it so interesting. She brings it alive.
one of the greatest teachers at SMC. I highly recommend her class.
excellent teacher. first class.
What I loved about Rabach's class is her stimulating conversation-style teaching method. She's a fun, entertaining thinker who sharpens everyone's minds. Is a very cool person. Will have to work hard in her class. She's just plain brilliant. Advice: come having already read the chapter. She moves fast and at times can be unorderly/unclear.
She's horribly disorganized, it's all lecture and few notes. I cannot complain I didnt do much in her class but did not fail. I think the best way to do well is to talk to her, she's more clearer then. The extra credit helps by much. You should take her class if you want updates on our society and world issues.
Her class discussions are very interesting and raises awareness to issues you would never think of but she is unknowingly a hard teacher. She's easy to talk to but with all the effort I put in this class, I still did poorly. Extra credits helped a little bit.
shes great
Wonderful teacher, she doesn't believe in exam. Her class is mostly on class discusions and writing papers. If you need more help go see her during her office hours, she will take the time to see you and help you out! Not much used of the book... that was the only annoying thing!
Great teacher! Really good sense of humor that makes the class interesting. She knows her stuff and gives lots of extra credit.
Prof. Rabach is an exception teacher! She is very big on group projects, and the outcomes of projects weight heavily towards your final grade. Be active in class and do well on the text-book based tests and you'll get an easy A!
Very disorganized. Very confusing. Smart women, but her brains get in the way of her clarity.
Excellent professor. She is extremely intelligent, but very disorganized. She gets students involved in discussion.
she is the worst, and worst of all the teachers i have ever had. her lectures are boring, and exams are extremely hard, do not take her class, avoid at all cost, she is just plain useless. she thinks that her class is of an university level, but doenst realize that she is lecturing bunch bunch of undergraduates.
Great professor. A little disorganized and always plans to cover more than is possible in the given time but really challenges your ideas. No tests but grade based on VERY time intensive team project. She is very open to helping students and never makes you feel dumb. Avoid if you have limited time or commitment.
Very challenging teacher and class. Learned a lot, but LOTS of work. Grade based on two individual papers, class participation, two presentations and a final team paper. Don't take if you don't have the time or interest or are very shy.
I desrved a C in this class, but ended up with an A. Her curve system is awesome, somehow by knowin only 20% of questions, I was gettin Bs on the tests. The bad thind is that she goes from one thing to another without a clear step by step explanation,so u really dont kno what u have to kno for a test. LOTS of reading.Very useless / UNCLEAR lectures.
Great proff if you can keep pace. Very thought provoking and extremely intelligent. If you want someone easy or need someone to hold your hand through everything avoid her.
She is extremely smart. and make SURE that you learn your materials. She will call on you randomly in class, but if you don't know its okay. She doesn't give you a hard time at all. Her exams are easy if you just listen in class. She likes to repeat key points so you dont have to worry if you didn't get it. Take her class! She's so cute!
HARD CLASS!! Don't take if you are not a sociology major. However, professor is very, very helpful if you go to her office hours. Very time consuming class and attendance is mandatory. Not the class you can breeze through! Text is tough to read and the final project...VERY time consuming. Only take this if you are a serious student.
professor rabach is an extremely educated and interesting person. the reading is a must and you better know the material because she will call on you randomly in class. it was a challenge but i learned so much and looked forward to going to class. she tends to skip around and its hard to follow at times but read/highlight and you'll be fine.
Do not take her unless you live and breathe CNN because here whole class structure is based on class discussions. Also, you will spend the entire time confused about assignments and you will never know your grade in the class till your 3 weeks done with the course. If you want to learn don't take her.
Not to scare you bt this class was hell for everyone, including Rabach. Social research is very complex. Your grade is based on a min poject, the BIG project and extra things that aren't that hard. The worst part is all the negative feedback; just when you think you finishes... nope. Dont be too paranoid from all the stress though it won't help.
I personally loved coming to her class each lecture. The best thing to do is to attend the lectures. They may be sleep-inducing, but she clarifies the texts and whatnot. And it is highly recommended that you do the group powerpoints.
She is insane!!!! Very hard class, unbelievable amount of work! She can be nice and sometimes helpful but she is bipolar and consistently contradicts herself! Do yourself a huge favor and DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Prof. Rabach is a very blunt person. She calls texters out int he middle of class. She answers questions when you ask, then she'll incorporate the answer of the question back into the lecture. Going to class is cool because her cute appearance keeps your attention. Tests are straight forward. Just pay attention to the text-book when you read.
Warning: don't take this class unless you're an econ major or actually need it for something. She's a great teacher overall but the material is hard. 3 tests make your whole grade. She curves them most of the time as well. She's also willing to give out extra credit. Her whole class is like one big conversation which is great. Overall shes a saint
I hink she is a great professor I took her some years ago and she really shaped my view to the world. She has shaped my vision towards social innovation.
SHE SPEAKS PERSIAN BECAREFUL!!!!!!
Would reccomend this class to sociology majors and anyone interested in analyzing data. she is brilliant but it is a difficult class and depends heavily on the reading.
SHE is AMAZING!! I love going to class, she is always on top of everything! I can not wait to take more classes with her!
TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN SOC 4, ONLY ONLY ONLY ONLY TAKE IF YOU NEED IT TO TRANSFER OR WANT TO ANALYZE DATA, IT IS A DIFFICULT CLASS. TEXTBOOK USE IS A MUST. SHES A GREAT PROFESSOR IF YOU DO YOUR PART.
This class is HARD! ONLY TAKE IT IF U NEED SOC 4, or if your a SOC MAJOR. It will require alot of ur time and it will probably make u have a few nervous breakdowns lol. Professor is AMAZING, brilliant, too brilliant even. She is very helpful though and wants you to do well. If you can commit to it and u like this stuff, TAKE HER CLASS
Im so sorry for you if you have to take this class. i never rate professors this one i want to give you a fair warning. She is what ever good comment says about her. She is way to smart. She knows persian. And she will make you want to cry. Only take if its part of your major, And dont say ANYTHING bad in persian!!!! Fair Waring!!!
do not under any circumstances take this class unless you need it to transfer/its your major. shes great but the class is killer, takes up A LOT of your time.
she speak persian, TOO FUNNY. I love her for that. don't take this class unless it's required though, so difficult.
Only take this class if you are absolutely required to do so. She is a nice lady, but this class is super tedious and is not worth it; unless you're interested. This class is equivalent to the UCLA Intro to Sociology class, know this going into it. There are no tests, a few quizzes, no midterm, no final, and two projects. Pretty boring...
Professor Rabach was a great teacher. She is understanding, wants to be sure you comprehend the material and is helpful at relating the material to modern times. She is an adult and treats you like an adult. More professors should take her approach to teaching.
Professor Rabach is very nice and I thought her class was quite interesting. There is extra credit, two exams, a take home final essay, lots of reading, and student lead discussions. DO NOT take this class unless you have a strong background in American history. PS the tests are HARD.
I sat in on this class and ended up taking it for "fun". She is brilliant and some of her intelligence will end up rubbing off on you. Her lectures are amazing - layered with wit, history, truth, and dry humor. The best professor I have ever taken a class from.
Very straightforward professor. Must read textbooks repeatedly to memorize material because her test questions are tricky. If you learn the concepts taught in her class, you will begin to see them applied everywhere - and that's a nice surprise.
Her tests are a bit tough, but they are all MC questions with one short answer. She usually doesn't follow her syllabus- lags. She's pretty straight forward about the subject, but it's best to read the book a few times. She highly recommends and makes use of peer discussion- Student Led Discussions (SLD) and study groups.
One of the best teachers/mentors I have ever had. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!
Professor's lectures are very dry and boring. Rather than teaching she will keep referring you to read Babbie instead. You begin the project from week 1 but really don't do much until the last 3 weeks of class when everything gets hectic. Plan to spend your entire finals weekend on this project if you want an A in this class. don't stress and GL!!!
Professor Rabach is amazing. She teaches you to be on top of your****, actually to be 2 chapters ahead than planned. You will need to be best friends with Babbie, and you will need to learn how to relax because alot gets hectic. Follow your instincts when choosing a partner. Always communicate with her and READ BABBIE. i miss her class.
She is one of the best professors I have ever had at SMC. I took Econ 2 with her over the summer & I understood economics. She is a great person who really cares about her students. Definitely recommend her!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! i wish more students would take her class so our generation would wake up and learn about stuff that is going on around us! sooo interesting and useful outside the classroom as well!
If Rabach was compared to an African animal she would be a lion. She's sharp, well-informed, and you don't only spend the whole class analyzing dates and past events, but how they connect to the present. Her tests are a breeze if you took notes in class and read Heilbroner. IF you're a history major this class will be is particularly easy.
Yes, do it. Add the class now. You will be a better person for it.
great teacher, great class. not an easy A. your grade will reflect how well you understand the material. if you can be interested in politics, history and economics rabach will teach you a lot of interesting stuff. i myself am not conservative but if you are, this class may annoy you haha
To my surprize found that I loved econ!Great professor. Not easy, but teaches in a very interesting way.Not straight forward, more discussion, conversation etc rather than mainly textbook.Creates an awareness, and interest.LOVED HER!Your grade will be a reflection of how well u understand materials. No notes on tests.U have to memorize a bit.Take her.
Professor Rabach is absolutely wonderful. I admire her intellect and poise, and subtle but hilarious sense of humor. Regardless of her excellent teaching, economics is a diverse and complex subject - if your major does not require it, do not take an econ class unless you are prepared for a challenge.
Although it was somewhat hard, this was by far one of the best classes I have ever taken at SMC. Rabach is personal and EXTREMELY helpful. She is very willing to give you the A as long as you show her that you are dedicated. I do *not* recommend this class if you have no interest in Soc, however.
Hands down one of the best professors at SMC. You WILL put in WORK for that A. Must take if you're interested in sociology and want to transfer to a UC. READ BABBIE! Rabach cares about her students who are serious.
I love this teacher. History15(also econ15) is a subject that I really didn't enjoy. I tried hard and got a B. Wouldn't have done it without going to office hours and creating study groups. But this class opened up my eyes and changed my views. I don't regret taking it at all. It's pretty intense actually. But not an easy A, maybe an easy B.
Excellent teacher. Very interesting class, very intelligent lectures and discussions. Very relevant material to life. The professor genuinely cares about the information and her students learning it. Read the book, take notes, and participate. I was interested in this material before the class, now econ is my major.
I love the whole concept of the class how me as a student had the opportunity to take control of the class but at the same time in the control of the instructors
can't say enough about Rabach. She challenges you to look beyond the surface of things, be aware of the lens through which we view the world. She won't spoon feed you what she wants you to understand, but she'll lead you to the trough. You have to earn your A, but if you are motivated to learn, she will get your back. Take her to enrich your mind.
She is a great professor, always willing to help. Just read the chapters before class so you will understand the lecture. The tests can be hard if you dont understand the material. Definetly do study groups. Most importantly do a SLD it will save you if you dont do that well on tests.
Not an easy class, but so worth it. Professor Rabach is amazing.
I LOVE professor rabach. She is such a powerful motivating woman I learned soooo much in her class now I'm ahead of all other classes when we have discussions. She is very intelligent and expects you to not be a robot all semester. Just read and participate and you will learn a lot from her
One of my favorite SMC professors. I have taken her for Econ 2 as well as Econ 15. Read the material before class, participate in class discussions, and you will leave her classes way more educated than when you arrived. If you want a class that is meh, an easy A, and robotic, her class and the class atmosphere is most certainly not not for you.
All I've got to say is that Rabach has your best interests in making you understand how the world works. If prior to taking her class you did not have any interest in understanding the world, you will early on. I wish there were hundreds of her at SMC. I wish she were my mom. She has your best interest in making you better. Someone clone her.
Rabach Is a pretty decent professor very informative. Her lectures are important but attendance dosn't effect grade. I didnt show up all the time to class and still recieved an B Just read or Simply Just know the material.
BEST PROF AT SMC HANDS DOWN. i took her first for macro 2, never took an econ class before and after i seriously considered double majoring in it. next took her IPE class, and now im going to take hist 15 with her. she teaches you about life, and how econ fits into it. be ready to take your brain to new levels. again, best prof ever.
Took a total of three of her courses. She's a great person and therefore, an amazing professor. She will change your boring life by exposing your soul to how the world works not only in the present, but in the past and future.
DO THE STUDY GUIDES ON E-COMPANION! Couldn't really take notes in this class from what I remember, she was sort of all over the place. I just read the assigned chapters and got a B. Didn't know there were online study guides until the class ended. DOH! Also didn't do a presentation. Study guides+reading+presentation=A.Good luck mates!
Prof.Rabach makes me strive to be better! She is a wealth of knowledge, and blessed with the capability of sharing it in a constructive manner. Initially intimidated by her wit, decided to settle in, enjoy her dynamic lectures, and participate in class discussion. Read the book, sit in front, make your brain porous to absorb all the baffling info.
Professor Rabach is a GIFT. She will challenge you, and make you really think. I thought I was an art major, now I'm reconsidering. What a surprise! Wonderful teachers are remarkable; you don't expect their effect, but then it happens and you grow. Take her class - don't miss the chance to learn from her. Advice: read, attend, participate.
One of the best professors I have had this far, along with Preciado. They are not easy classes. There is a lot of reading involved. And most importantly you have to be able to understand the material. But if you like politics, economics, and history take this class. You will learn a lot and better get used to the phrase: cui bono.
Absolutely amazing professor! You will learn so much about the world from taking this class. Tips: make sure you utilize the textbook-read assigned chapters 2-3 times, do an SLD and participate...I got an A by doing this. Form a relationship with Rabach-she's a one of a kind professor! Don't miss out on her knowledge.
Intelligent, witty, hilarious, and tells it like it is. It is truly an honor to be able to take one of her classes. Many of her students are so obsessed with her, they take another class of hers. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER. Extra Credit is offered, no hw or projects, just read & you'll do great.. actually I barely even ready Heilbroner & I got Bs.
She is the worst teacher I've had my whole life. She is very unorganized and confusing. She knows her staff but as a teacher, she is just not good. The way she grades is very unclear and changes the syllabus all the time and she seems to get annoyed when students ask about test dates or grades.DO NOT TAKE HER!
She is brilliant, intelligent, witty, and a force to be reckoned with. That being said, she's definitely not professor of the year, nor is she as organized as she expects all her students to be, but if you make an effort, do the readings, and participate in class discussions, you will definitely get good life experience from her, if nothing else.
Amazing professor! Professor Rabach makes me want to take her other classes even though I don't need them for my transfer. Think of the best teachers you've had and you can counter Prof. Rabach among them. Or at least I can. She genuinely cares about her students. Just put the work in and your grad will reflect that. And do an SLD if you can.
She's rad. Super helpful. Very knowledgable. Very connected to her students.
One of the best professors you'll find at any community college. She genuinely cares for her students and relates her class to current topics. She makes it easy to understand the concepts. If you do the reading and go to class (and pay attention), you'll get an A.
I took her macro class over the summer. Good professor who knew how to connect macro concepts to everyday scenarios, making them pretty easy to recall. Her sense of humor helped make two hours of econ manageable. Tests were multiple choice along with a free response question or two. Definitely recommend taking the class with her.
She changed my vision of the world and inspired me to be a better citizen of the world. Her class should be mandatory !
Definitely recommend taking a class with her.
Rabach is a genuinely caring professor, but is a no-excuses type of professor. Her class discussions are very interesting, but is a bit old fashioned when it comes to allowing students to use technology during class. Loves to relate what we learn to real life examples. Her tests are manageable, but study hard and don't underestimate her.
Very funny and nice teacher. However lectures are hard to follow because she talks ALOT. Exams are hard and notes from lectures are really important in order to pass. 3 exams only and lets you do a SLD for extra credit. I would recommend her but if you are a F1 student in your 1 semester. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!
Unfortunately this class is required and she is the only one to teach it. Her lectures are unbelievingly confusing. At one time she'll be talking about the great depression and then she'll relate it somehow to beaver hides and native american casinos. It honestly makes no sense. Her tests are also extremely hard as well.
Great professor. She is so good I am taking her again in the spring. There is alot of reading but if you read and go to class and study you'll be fine. Very funny professor makes class enjoyable take her you will not regret it
Prof. Rabach is an amazing professor. Very smart. I loved her class even though she is a very tough grader and I probably won't get an A. Be there! Participate! If you try, she will be glad to help you. If you slack her class is not for you.
There is a lot of material to wrap your head around and she can go fast, so ask questions in class. She values participation and as long as you are trying to do well she will help you out a lot. You need the book for sure but a slightly older edition works just fine for A LOT less money. Participate in class, read and do an SLD and youll get an A.
Test's given are compiled from lecture, E-comp & reading. If you don't read the texts you wont pass. You don't need the optional texts either unless you are planning to be an econ major. Prof. Rabach is a thinker, 2-3 steps ahead of what you are thinking, so unless you think like her, most of her lectures will leave you hanging in the wind.
I took this class during the spring and it was the hardest thing ever. If you are shy and don't like to participate, this is not the class for you. She is also very confusing during lecture.I was lost the whole time! As far as tests, those are hard too. I didn't know what to study, she piles lectures on power points on book material. I dropped!
3 Exams over the course of class. Each exam is worth a lot so make sure you study for it. 1st exam was given with a 9% flat curve which is really generous. Lectures are clear and she basically goes over and clarifies what was scheduled on the syllabus. If you don't read, dont expect to pass. If you dont ask for clarification, youll stay confused
Professor Rabach changed my life, I took her in hist 15 (same as econ15) aswell as the pol 5. She know exacly what she is talking about, and for those people who seem to be confused by her, it is simply because she wants her students to think, and to think critically! I am honored to have been able to be her student. TAKE HER CLASS!
Best professor at smc! Took her twice-not my major-just to learn from her. Clarifies economic systems and focuses on women and the environment amazing and realistic. Her lectures can go places. Does not write anything legible on the board so it's best to sit up front. Plenty of extra credit. Engages with students. Do an SLD! Long mc tests. Read!
She is a nice teacher, very smart, very unorganized. She goes on a tangent about something that's kind of related but at the same time it's not expected to know for the test. She expects you to read the book, the lectures are confusing and slightly difficult to follow along. I came in interested in politics but left frustrated. My own fault.
Dr. Rabach is hands down my favorite professor. Her lectures are stream-of-consciousness, you'll love it or you'll hate it. Don't expect to be able to take clear, linear notes. It won't happen. That said, if you pay attention you'll learn more from her than you have in every EconHistPoli Sci class you've taken before combined. READ THE BOOKS.
Absolutely amazing! I love professor Rabach. I will be taking her IPE class in the fall. Extremely helpful. Always stops during the lecture to ask If there any questions or comments. If you dnt read you wont pass unless you can learn directly from lecture. Most people have to read. If you like History or Economics you will love this class!
Professor Rabach was definitely one of my favorite professors at SMC. Very fascinating class, gives you a good idea of how the world actually works. I highly recommend it to anyone with an open and analytical mind. Make sure you do the SLD's. Lot's of reading but its interesting so it's not laboring.
Wow! I took her IPE Econ 5 class - she is AMAZING! It's challenging - but it's like a workout - you will feel the BURN and even though it hurts as you peel away that old mind frame U had - at the end there is clarity, strength, an rock hard determination to build a better world. Read, Don't Flake, 3 exams, extra credit SLD, Participate.
Great teacher, super interesting lectures. Great reading assignments. I thoroughly enjoyed here class.
Wasn't expecting to get an A, but she surprised me. She's passionate/knowledgeable about the subject. Gives great lectures. you'll learn alot I averaged b's on the tests, but with extra credit and doing an SLD it got me an A. Lot of reading, so don't put it off. .. it helps to read the chapters before the lectures. you'll get alot out of it
Great class overall best professor I've ever had! She sincerely cares about every student and loves to wake up the sheep. She is a bad ass professor who gives you the clear cut story. Read everything 3 times, overall she is a role model.
The most inspirational teacher I have ever had. I loved her class so much I ended up taking more of her classes. She is brilliant and really made me care about economics. She changed my whole view on international political economy. Her lectures are amazing and she really cares about her students. Love her. Take her class to open your mind!
Prof. Rabach is the kind of teacher that doesn't come too often in your life-She is absolutely phenomenal, and cares about the material with a passion that'll inspire students not even interested in the subject. She's extremely empathetic, and truly wants the best for her students. Only professor at SMC I made sure I took twice. Taught me so much.
Great professor. She expects you to think and be engaged in the class. She really does care about her students and them being able to think critically. She's great if you want a class that is lecture based and revolves around class discussions. If not, then you won't be able to follow along. I took both History 15 and Poli Sci 5.
Best class I've taken so far at SMC. Professor Rabach was challenging, but if you show up to class, ask questions, and seek her out for help, you will succeed. She told us many times to read the textbook chapters twice-- DO THIS. There are questions on the tests straight from the book. Overall, the class is fantastic, interesting, and 100% worth it
I hated community college but prof. Rabach really made it worth it. The passion she has for her subject is evident and her lectures never fail to inspire. She makes you work for your grade but that's really the least you can do to show respect for just how much effort she puts into her work.
I have nothing against her. Its just the fact that I chose this class as an elective for credit and I was also interested in learning about poli sci & came out dissapointed. Do not take this class unless you have previous knowledge of poli. She expects you to read a 20 page chapter every night. She does not teach the subject insted lectures thebook
I've taken A LOT of classes some of them WAY harder and this was the most confusing class I've ever taken. Lectures are all over the place. There was no point in taking notes because they're impossible to go back to for reference. Dates are in random order. You'd be better off sleeping through class for the attendance and just reading the book.
Okay so professor Rabach is really inspirational and all the good tags are actually very true about her! BUT I put in countless hours of studying and at the end wasnt sure if I was going to get an A. Shes not a fair test giver. She gives ambiguous questions that are tricky and leave you confused. I enjoyed her class, but I would not take her again.
Professor Rabach is a very kind and well-educated lady, her class is inspirational too. She put a lot works for her students and offered many extra credits. Participating in one SLD can also pull up your overall grade a lot. However, her class is very time-consuming as a three units class, you should skip it if you want to take this as elective.
If you are not interested in Political Science and Economics do NOT take this class. It is extremely lecture heavy and you are learning concepts rather than memorizing terms. Rabach is a gem. She breaks down complicated ideas and offers a lot of extra credit. You only have a few tests and essays, so make sure to take clear notes to study with.
She is a HARD TEACHER. Very few points in the class. The class is VERY SCATTERED. This is not regular econ, it is all about mercantilism, structuralism, and liberalism. 2 exams and a final exam (or final group project) Also do the extra credit presentations LOTS OF READING Very few people get A's on the test Go to her office hours She is average
If you are an international student, do not take this class. This class need tons of prior knowledge for US history. I watched the crash course US history, read the textbooks, took notes. I spent most of my time on this class, yet I can only manage to get a C. The class and textbook are interesting. The tests cover insane amount of information.
Grade is based on the midterm and final which consists of multiple choice and free response sections. Although there's a lot of reading, as long as you pay attention to the key points in the lecture, the tests are relatively easy. She prepares you for the tests and offers study sessions where she will explain more in depth.
Rabach's classes may seem confusing at first, but everything will make sense if you stick around long enough. Dr. Rabach is very straightforward, and can seem harsh, but she really knows her stuff and you'll come out of her class a much more informed individual. She's also really willing to talk things outside of class, which is rad.
Exams were poorly constructed where many of the questions were irrelevant to the concepts. eg instead of having to explain how the bench got there, you were asked " what color is the bench", why are we studying the minor irrelevant details instead of the concepts and important facts? Many people in my study group felt the same and struggled.
If you are an international student, never take this class. This class wants you to read so many readings and articles and the class is not organized at all. And the grade distribution of the exam is really tough, so getting B is hard as much as getting A.
Dr. Rabach is like a mad genius. Her lectures are confusing at first but she told us that after a while everything would begin to make sense AND IT DID! To my complete amazement, all the concepts that she was weaving together that seemed totally random and confusing began to fit together in my mind perfectly! Class is a challenge but worth it!
I was a USC spring admit in fall 2016 and took this course. It was one of the easiest classes ive ever seen. Pay attention in class and take good notes. Listen to what she has to say cause some test questions are only lecture material. It is all really logical material. Read minimally but still do it. youll be fine
I signed up for this class for Gen Ed credit; I dropped about three weeks in because I found Prof. Rabach to be one of the most disorganized instructors I've ever had. She also exhibits clear political bias multiple times each lecture & expects the student to accept that bias as objective truth.
She's so incredibly knowledgeable on the subject and her lectures are very interesting. I learned so much in her class and would definitely take again. The only con is that she's unorganized and was at times all over the place during the lectures or in terms of what is on the exam. Actively participate, read a lot, and you'll do fine.
She is not clear with what she wants from her students. While the material isn't hard, writing an essay without a prompt is pretty difficult.
Shes definitely a tough grader. U mustt pay attention in class and read the textbook line by line. I do not recommend this class to anyone who hasnt done well in an AP class or took an AP class. An A is possible but its definitely a lot of work. U will not fall asleep in her class tho bc her lectures are amazing
Professor Rabach is a good teacher, but she ONLY lectures and lets you read the book for clarity. Personally, I would not drop $200 on the textbook she uses because you really only need it once or twice in the semester; borrow a book from someone or share if possible. Definitely show up to lecture, take notes, and study for the tests for an A.
You're going to work hard in this class. You're going to need to read a lot and take notes in lectures. And you're going to learn more than you ever thought you needed to know (if you're not majoring in these) about politics and economics. It's not easy but it is very informative and she makes every effort to ensure you learn. Go to office hours.
Rabach was a very caring professor I'll give her that but she did not make Econ easy to understand at all. I'm terrible at Econ and this class only confused me further. Make sure to carefully read as her lectures won't be much help however that couldn't save my grade as I'm bad at Econ and needed help! Her tests were extremely difficult.
Absolutely horrible class. She gives little to no direction for the final paper, and is extremely confusing. Took this class as a GE requirement, huge mistake. Unless this relates significantly to your major, stay as far away as possible. She is a nice person, but an awful professor for someone having trouble understanding class concepts.
Very hard professor. Don't fall for her "Extra credit" cause its not really extra credit and it barely boosted a percent. I had a very hard time with understanding her lectures and test are very hard
Very approachable, extremely informative, obviously passionate about material. You will learn a lot if you show up, pay attention, and participate. Sit in the front of the class to feel more involved. Group projects in general piss me off but I didn't mind doing hers, as I gained something out of it. Especially enjoyable if you like global studies.
great teacher, and her sense of humor is good too
An amazing professor who really loves what she teaches. She goes at a pace that everyone can follow and almost on the exam is in the textbook readings, so if you fall behind it is possible to catch up even without her lecture notes. Her lectures are amazing though. She gives a lot of extra help and extra credit for those willing to put in the work
horrible teacher
Horrible
She is an interesting character. Show up to her lectures and follow along. Read the text on your own time in order to fill in any blanks that may exist. Don't be afraid to ask questions (she can come off as rude sometimes) Participate in Class and you'll be okay.
If you want to do well in her course, read the textbook. Her lectures are hilarious and cover a very wide range of topics, mostly terms, so reading the book is a must. She recommends you read the chapters 2-3 times (I did). Her tests are long, but if you read the book you should be fine. Group projects are annoying. Overall, very educated Prof.
Rabach's class is eye-opening. For me it was also super interesting. Granted I am a PoSci major, but it was a course unlike any other. Yes you will have to read, yes you will need to put effort. She comes from USC and this course is supposed to be upper division so yes you'll have to do some work. However an A is attainable just work!
Took Rabach not knowing what I was getting myself into. She has a heavy resume of her past Alma Maters. She taught Econ 5 at USC as an upper-division, so the class work and expectations are high. At the end of it all, I left Econ5 a smarter student and more prepared for high-level college work. Put in maximum effort and you will get a B at least.
HONESTLY THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. THIS CLASS IS SO UNORGANIZED, SO UNCLEAR, AND SO POORLY TAUGHT. NOT ONLY WAS SHE A BAD PROFESSOR, BUT SHE WAS GENUINELY NOT A KIND PERSON AND VERY CONDESCENDING. I HAD AN EMERGENCY SURGERY AND SHE DOCKED ME A WHOLE LETTER GRADE FOR ABSENCE WHEN I BROUGHT A MEDICAL NOTE. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I am really bad at economics & find no interest in it whatsoever but Professor Rabach has made the class so enjoyable & interesting. I find myself wanting to learn more & am so interested in her lectures. The presentations other students do are great to learn & helpful for exams. She explains so well & has a genuine passion for teaching & economics
Do yourself a huge favor and avoid this class. At least half of the class drops and for good reason. This class is extremely unorganized and the syllabus is disregarded entirely. Exams cover a really wide range of information that is impossible to cover and memorize word for word. Could have been a decent class but there are a lot of flaws.
Messy class. The course is highly unorganized and hard to follow. Most of the class dropped after the first test. Grades are based almost entirely on 3 exams, so you have to do well. The concepts are pretty difficult and not well explained. Lectures are extremely frustrating. If you show up to every class and study a ton it might work out.
Truly enjoyed both classes I took with her. She's a character, but if you participate and treat her with respect then she'll do anything she can to help you. I had a group project horror story in her class and she took care of it when most professors would say "sorry you're stuck". Attend class and pay attention in lecture and you'll be fine
Her class was difficult but if you take your notes to what she says its an easy class. I learned a lot from her class, a bit messy but you'll get used to it. Reading the books required it important it'll be on tests. Her tests consistent of a lot of verbal info, slides dont provide much info to her lecture. just be there, pay attention & good notes
Super sweet professor, had her in Global 5 and it was a very interesting class. A lot of group projects but fair grading, would def recommend this class.
I'm a good student and am enjoying my other classes at SMC but unfortunately Rabach does not know how to organize whatsoever. Lectures are a mess and it is hard to know how much of what she is saying is relavant and what is just her going off topic. Her instructions for group projects are also impossible to follow and EXTREMELY unclear. Stay clear!
Very informative class. To address some of the negative reviews, the class grade is almost all exams based off of lectures, her lectures are clear and requires you to do a lot of reading. I feel like a lot of people expect to be babied and guided throughout the whole class. Do not take the class if you are someone who is dependent and lazy.
Grade: (3) 100 Question Exams (2) Group Projects (1) Final Essay There are no assignments to "cushion" your grade. My best tip is simple but crucial; attend lectures and do ALL of the assigned reading. About 25% of the class left towards the end. It was people who did not show up to lecture and failed an exam or did not pay attention in class.
SO basically, I am a straight A student. Even when a professor does not teach the class, I manage to teach it to myself. This woman is the most unorganized professor I have ever had and just repeats "hegemon", "mercantilism", and "IPE" for the entire class period. Everything she teaches is out of order. Do not take this class. It's a headache.
If you're not familiar with economics, the first couple of weeks of this class won't make sense to you. Even the professor admits that, but she is patient and knows the material. READ AND REREAD. REREAD and UNDERSTAND THE READING AND LECTURES because the exams are heavily based on it. A flaw for me was the way she ran the class felt disorganized.
This is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken in my whole life. I am a straight-A student and get ready for your GPA to drop. This class has given me so many anxiety attacks, and no matter how hard I work, I will never get an A. The professor is lovely and is passionate about the topic, but this class was way too difficult. DO NOT TAKE IT!!
THE TRUTH ABOUT RABACH: Rabach is a great teacher, that being said, you NEED the book. Don't be like me and wait till the last week to get it. She'll tell you to read chapters multiple times-DO IT!!! It will make class 100xs easier-TRUST ME. DETAILED lectures. It's not a difficult class but YOU WILL FAIL IF YOU SLACK OFF!! Overall great teacher.
Rabach is an exceptional teacher. The class will expand your understanding of history and the world. Truly inspiring. This is a very HARD class, that being said she is remarkable. Definitely take this class if you want to lean in and really learn. Test heavy and requires you to read. But I cannot tell you in 350 characters how great this class was.
Rabach is top-tier professor who has taught at USC. The bad reviews are from laggers and students that do not take their classes seriously. Her class is not disorganized but rather straightforward: come to lecture having already done the readings and be prepared for tests. She is explicit on deadlines and instructions for submitting assignments.
This has been one of the most challenging class I have ever taken not gonna lie. Professor Rabach gives amazing lectures that will definitely expand your knowledge and all the hard work will be worth it. Always be on top of your game do the reading before class and read it couple of times after class and you will definitely get an A.
She is a good professor, very intelligent but it is a very challenging class. You are only take 3 exams, all multiple choice questions some pretty tricky, one extended response with the final exam a take home essay. She is fair and normally gives a little curve. There is also one pop quiz and she grades essays and written responses very harsh.
there's a lot of group projects, reading, note taking (!!!!!) - but professor rabach has changed my life. this class changed my entire outlook on the world we live in in terms of sociopolitical structure and the history leading up to current and future economic systems. furthermore, she was accommodating and empathetic for my family situation. <3
The truth is she is a very intelligent professor that knows the subject well and is enthusiastic in class. It also was my more interesting class I took so far. However, I found the class to be disorganized which makes it difficult to study and do well on test. If you're going for the A then this get ready to work because it's not going to be easy.
Rabach is A GEM! Lectures have memorable examples, stats, and great info. The extra-cred project is fun, the readings are perfect. She uses 1 textbook which has easy, accessible writing. Her powerpoints are good to study w/, and the tests are not difficult . There is some info on the test that is only from class.
She suggested that i submit a petition to withdraw from her class to save my GPA. the petition ended up getting denied for "lack of reason" and left with an F on my transcript. She literally made the situation worse by suggesting that process instead of actually helping me like a professor. I went from UCLA bound to CSUN hopeful.
I had the privilege to be in Professor Rabach's classes many years ago and she's still top of mind today. She encourages critical thinking within a larger framework and longer timeline. She's not for the faint of heart looking for an easy ride. Tests are tough. But worth every hour of study and thought. Very inspirational speaker and professor.
Amazing teacher. She was my inspiration to get my degree in economics.
