you don't even need to crack a book to get a 100+. I did it.
Dont take her! Especially at night very boring...
Explanations are very clear, and she is very fair w/ ex credit etc.
She is always available to help and she makes most everything easy to understand
She is willing to help students that come to her. She also offers extra credit.
She is very nice and helpful. Tests are difficult, but lots of extra credit.
really really helpful and understandable, only problem would be hard exams.
awesome teacher, so clear and helpful, gives extra credit- hard tests
love the way she teaches. hard tests, but A's are doable w/ e.c.
Very easy to understand. Tests are exactly what you expect. Overall great teacher.
Class very boring, she teaches well but easy to zone out.. tests hard.. and maybe its just cob 241 but she rarely gives any extra credit... just a 3 point hw once.
Great teacher! Explains material very well.

very helpful and teaches pretty good.. don't need to read if you go to class... tests are not THAT hard, but not easy.. put in some effort and you'll be fine
She is a good teacher, except that she has her favorites. If you're not one of them, she's extremely cold and its hard to ask for help.
She's pretty good, tests and quizzes easy, A is doable, don't know what yall are talking about with extra credit...we haven't gotten any!
she is really nice, the info is really clear, but it's a hard hard subject and she'll put you on the spot, have to go to class, but i'm glad i had her
super nice lady, go to her office and she is really helpful. she cares about her students, but acct is just a hard class
Excellent professor! Always on task, and explains the material very well. She wants everyone to do well in her class. Just keep up with the homework, and ask questions. She drops 3 out of 8 quizzes.
Accounting sucks! She is a good teacher, but her tests are hard. Always willing to help, and the final exam is standardized and much easier than the ones she gives.
very good professor for a tough class...make sure you keep up though because she goes really fast...quizes arent that bad but the tests are very tough if you dont study...there arent any surprises though...everything you learn in class is on the exams
She is a very snotty prof. Kind of makes fun of the things you get wrong.Tests always have some kind of trick in them and material you have never seen before. Talks over most people's heads unless you are an acctg major - then you understand. Not recommend
241 is a tough class, and she teaches it very well. Her tests are really hard, but you always know what to expect on them. She designs great powerpoints that really help you understand the material and is very helpful in office hours. Recommend!
Good teacher. Tests are hard and always some trick in it to catch students. Very nice but a hard class.
Easier than 241. She is good teacher. Very nice, helpful, and knows her stuff. Pretty hard exams. I would take her over any accounting teacher.
once wrote "NO!" on one of my quizzes and underlined and circled it. I swear. talk about attitude. boring classes, harder material, very hard tests. she has two-part tests, which means that you have test "weeks" instead of a days.

She's really easy to understand and teaches the material well. Not the easiest class, but I think she is a great professor. I like her so much I'm taking her for 242 too.
Great teacher!! Very clear in class and does a lot to help you if you come to her personally. Her tests are not the easiest but you always no what to expect. I recommend her for both 241 and 242.
so helpful in office hours, class is never a waste of time always clear and to the point. great prof. take her if you have to take this class!!! i'm taking her next year for cob 242 without a doubt!
Very ****y. I'm sick of hearing about the poultry plant. Tests suck. Everything else ok.
Tests are WAY too hard...never enough time, if you have problems with time on tests OR quizzes, DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER HER. Helpful lady though, but way too strict in regards to time...if you don't finish part of a test, too bad...
Very helpful! go to her for office hours. this class is a little hard but she gives you lots of examples to make sure you understand it. take her if you can.
i had her fall 03... is a good teacher, but drinks her water way too much haha
She's impossible, I do the work and understand the material but the tests are so hard and too long. keep looking.
dON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT HER. SHE IS IMPOSSIBLE
Accounting in general's hard, but she's a great prof. Office hours help a lot. Spend the class doing examples which really helps. Work hard and you'll do well.
She is a really good teacher, most def. knows what she is talking about. Watch out, she can be ****y, likes to make students feel dumb when they ask a question. She has a great teaching style that makes accounting easier to learn.
haaaard class. good teacher, but HARD class. make sure you pay attention and do the homework
Great professor. Knows what she is talking about, explains information in a very easy-to-understand way. As long as you pay attention and do the homework, no problem getting an A. Taking her for 242 I liked her so much
The class in general is a bit hard. She is a good proff though. She knows what she is talking about and her lectures are clear. Gives plenty of time on group projects. Quizes are an easy way to boost ur grade. NO curving on tests. If you do all the problems assigned, then u will have no problem
She is definetly hard, but she does a really good job teaching...take her if you want to learn but you'll need to bust your ass for a B
Listen to me, I don't do badly in school, and these kids who are saying you can get an A...maybe taking accounting at community college or another professor, but with her, good luck getting a B. Please listen to me and save yourself, take someone who isnt SO hard...you wont have a good experince..
she is so hard and she is anfair!!!DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
WORST TEACHER EVER! DO NOT TAKE HER! YOU WILL FAIL! if you dont wanna fail, then you're gonna have to study accounting non-stop. prepare to kiss your time goodbye. 2 hour long tests at night. impossible teacher. prepare to cry
if you're even considering her...you already failed
She is one of the best actg teachers at this school, she teaches you what you need to know and doesn't confuse you by oversimplifying actg topics like other teachers do. Work hard and you should be a B no problem. She is very helpful in her office as well!
Horrible...class isnt that bad, but she can't teach, If you know nothing about excel, you will get a C, corrects herself as she goes along, instructions are horrible, thinks she is EXCEL GOD, however she is novice just like you.
She is HORRIBLE!!!! Takes excel WAY too seriously and has you do individual projects that require entirely too much work for what the class is. Is not forgiving on assignments and there is no way she will ever give points back (even when she knows she is wrong). The rest of the class isn't bad, she is just way to intense.
She's evil! Gives everyone attitude when they ask questions--probably because she doesn't know how to answer them. Too inexperienced with excel to be teaching ADVANCED excel. Oh, and her individual projects are a BLAST.
always seems to have an attitude with students, regardless of what's going on. i felt i knew more about excel than she did, and the rest of my class would probably agree with that. not helpful at all with project or any other question you have.
This woman has no soul. Excel projects are ridiculous and I truly believe she deducts points cause she thinks its impossible to be as much of an Excel Wizard as she. Walks up behind you during exams and basically says out loud "HA! You idiot, why the heck would you do it that way?!" I feel for her children.
This is a HORRIBLE class! Shifflet doesn't care about helping or teaching her students. She contradicts herself and half of what she says makes little sense. She offers little help on any of the group projects, and when you approach her with questions all she wants to do is finish the conversation as quickly as possible. Don't take her!
Shifflett is a good professor. She can have a bit of an attitude at times but is very helpful if you need it. As long as you pay attention to the powerpoints and study before quizzes/tests, it's not hard to pull a B from her classes. She's very amiable if you don't act stupid.
She's the witch of Excel!!Make things a lot more harder than it supposed to be.Deduct points for no reason. It seems like that She has attitude all the time cuz she Never Smile in class...Don't take her if you will, however, you don't have aother choice.
the sound of her voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard and it makes me cringe. she's extremely obnoxious and rude. she's never happy, always in a bad mood. avoid her if you can.
Ms. Shifflett was one the best professors I have had this semester. Her Excel projects are easy, 3 tests which come from the powerpoints, you can miss up to 6 classes without penalty, and the departamental final is much easier than any of her tests! She is really helpful during office hours. I cant wait to take her for 301!
She is full of crap. She takes off for the stupidest things. I hate her. HORRIBLE TEACHER. I will NEVER EVER take another one of her classes. EVER.
Tests and projects are very hard and time consuming. She is helpful, but in a way that makes you not want to get help from her because of the attitude. Take her if you dont want to boost your gpa.
I loved this class. I had a terrible experience with Accounting in Blue Ridge, and this was like a breath of fresh air. Just follow her instructions. Read the chapter before class, do the problems that she recommends in the book and you'll be fine. She's great at answering questions, and answered some about the end of semester project. Great Prof.
I didn't put in much effort and I got a C. She made me dislike the class because her attitude is awful.
I'll start by saying she teaches very well. The material itself is pretty tough, but she's tougher. She has a wicked attitude, but as long as you sit there and listen, you will be fine. I am probably going to get a B+/A- in that class just because its surprisingly easy to learn from her.
The material for this course was extremely hard, but Professor Shifflett was helpful in every single way imaginable. I got a C out of this course, but I highly recommend taking Professor Shifflett, because she absolutely knows her material, and is super helpful outside of class. Accounting just isn't for everyone.
This class can be hard if you let it, but if you read the book, print off the slides, and work the optional exercises, you'll do fine. She makes everything really clear and after a while the material comes as a second nature. Her attitude can be a bit irritating at times, but she is really helpful.
She's a nice lady, very helpful and fair. Get to know her if you can, she's cool. Class can be difficult, especially for 1 credit class. Tedious assignments with tough grading. She's a good teacher and person, I'd recommend for any class.
For one credit class, Shifflet makes it too hard. For the second half of the semester, I have put more time into her assignments than into ACTG 377. Granted you will learn alot, but anybody can teach this class, even a student with a textbook.
She is an awesome teacher, especially because accounting is tough. When she says check out something online DO IT. There are pop quizzes here and there but she drops some and if you just put in the effort you'll be fine. She's very blunt and knows what she's talking about. TAKE HER.
Professor Shifflett knows what she's talking about. The material is pretty tough, but if you attend class and pay attention, it's easy to get the hang of. She gives about 10 pop quizzes throughout the semester (usually on Fridays) and she'll sometimes count a homework problem or reading an article as a quiz. I highly recommend this professor.
She's a good teacher, but in class she seems really mean. If you go to her office hours, she's more than happy to help you. She gives a pop quiz almost everyday. She never gives you enough time on the tests and doesn't take that into consideration. I do like her though. The class is just difficult, especially if you get behind.
I LOVED Professor Shifflett. She has by far been my favorite teacher at JMU. The first week of classes she comes off as mean/tough but after going to her office hours, I truly enjoyed talking to her and I completely respect her. The class was tough but she is always willing to help if you're struggling. BEST 241 teach! Wish i had her for 242.
Teacher is pretty hard. Gives 10 pop quizes 2 which are dropped. Doesnt give you enought time on tests but does prepare you well and gets you to understand the material. She knows her stuff she knows it well. Accounting majors should take her.
Excellent professor. Truly has a passion for accounting and explains the material well.
Professor Shifflett is by far the best professor I've had thus far. Accounting is challenging but she explains it so well that I didn't even have to read a full chapter in the textbook. Hard test and not enough time but she really does put effort to help you outside of class. TAKE HER!
Mrs. Shifflett makes this class so easy. If you just listen during class and do even a few of the homework problems each week you will do fine in the class. She is very nice and knows the subject well. Read the textbook first if you have a question because most of the stuff is straight forward, then go to her if you have a question.
Excellent teacher, does a great job of explaining in class and I barely have to study for tests and I've gotten A's on both. Only downside is there is barely enough time on tests and you have to work very efficiently, and sometimes she throws in a few tricky questions. By far the best teacher I've had at explaining material though.
Very good teacher. Gives good explanations and real-life examples. If you read textbook, the lectures become kind of redundant. The homework is not collected. Three multiple-choice tests and two financial statements test. The class overall is not hard, if you study. I definitely recommend taking her. The lectures are interesting and engaging.
If you attend class and pay attention this should be a fairly easy A. She is very strict on grading. Follow all in-class instructions and the instructions on the document exactly how she explained it or you will not be happy. Great class overall. You will actually become "proficient" in Excel like you have written on your resume.
Great professor! will actually learn something. Tests are kind of hard, and you need to make good use of your time. Didn't use the textbook to read but just to do the practice questions. Presentations are online, however you will learn more in class. Also, solutions to the presentations are not online
Mrs. Shifflett is such an amazing professor! She really knows what she's talking about and cares about her students. COB 241 in general is kind of tough, but she makes it very understandable and is super helpful if you go to her office hours (which I did a lot). Read the book and study her online quizzes. Would highly recommend her!!
Not very clear on what she talks about in class. You have to read all chapters in the book to understand and do all practice problems. Not clear about what is on test. But if you go for help shes super nice. Gets distracted by stories easily when trying to help.
I can almost guarantee that there is no professor out there that can explain accounting better than Shifflett. She is helpful and so clear in what she expects. If you slack, however, don't expect much in return, so show up and read the book. 4 chapter tests, 2 fin statement tests, 10 pop quizzes (drops lowest 2) and a final. TAKE HER
She is amazing at explaining the accounting concepts, making them understandable. She tells stories and is really good at making you remember the material. Do the practice tests and the practice financial statement problems to prepare for tests. There was a quiz for each chapter.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She is a horrible teacher. Went in numerous of times to office hours for help, and she talks down to you and expects you to know everything about accounting. She even admits most of her students will get bad grades in her class. Stay clear of her.
First off, she is a nice professor and means well. Quizzes and tests are unfair. Some people just don't understand the concepts like others do. She is unclear of what will be on the test, she just outlines it. She expects you to master it after the first time, many don't though. tests are tough even if you study. Tests are harder than the practice
Great teacher! Class is hard in general but she explains the content very well. Do the suggested assignments in the text book and the practice multiple choice she give you and you'll be fine. Her tests and quizzes wouldn't be as difficult if she gave you more time to complete them, she expects you to fly through her exams.
One of the best teachers I've had at JMU. She doesn't use Connect and she drops your two lowest quizzes. The class is hard but she has a lot of office hours for help. She uses PowerPoints and the books is useful.
She is an amazing professor, one the of the best I ever had. She is so helpful at office hours and does not make things harder than they are. She explains things so well and if you do not understand them, office hours help. Granted her quizzes and tests are tricky, but she prepares you so well for the final.
Professor Shifflett is an incredible professor and truly has a passion for accounting. However, her tests are unbelievably hard and if you don't understand how to apply every concept, there is no way you'll do well in the class.
I'm excited to have her for 304. She's clear in what she expects from her students. There are a lot of assignments, despite it being a beginners excel spreadsheet class. She's tough, but that's because she wants you to do well. Don't be afraid to ask her for help and get the most you can out of this class, because the material is EXTREMELY useful.
Professor Shifflett is one of the best professors I've had here at JMU. She's so kind and truly cares about the growth and development of every student. If you attend class and pay attention, you don't really need to read but definitely do problems at end of book. Tests are very fair, as 241 is a challenging course. I expect to receive an A.
Her grading criteria is very very clear. She will tell you what she expects. Make sure if you use your laptop in class, to not fool around on it because it will hurt you in the end. When she recommends flash cards please do it. She is willing to help if you go to her office hours.
You honestly cannot ask for a better professor for COB241 than her, she explains everything that makes the course so difficult to understand, gives you time in class to work on exercises and ask her questions. She will help you with anything you need if you go to her office hours. Always do the book problems and the practice probs she gives inclass
Prof. Shifflett is amazing. She knows what she is talking about and will prepare you well for the tests and final. Her tests are tough but if you keep up and practice from the textbook and online tests, you'll do fine. I definitely recommend her over the others. She is helpful in office hours and truly cares even. I wish she taught 242!
This is probably my third review of Professor Shifflett and I am sad that it is likely the last one. I really have enjoyed all of the classes I have taken with her. She has an incredible work ethic and is very articulate with her explanations. Do not slack and get the most you can out of this class, because she is fantastic.
She really loves the material but she is really nit-picky about little things and takes off a lot of points for them
Professor Shiffletts tests are unnecessarily hard and worded in a very complicated way. She doesn't offer any extra credit and refuses to curve anything. Accounting is already a very hard class, but I feel like she makes it worse. You absolutely have to know the material backwards and forwards if you want to get a decent grade.
Accounting in general is a tough class, but Shifflett is one of those professors who truly cares about her students, and is willing to help out in any way possible. She provides practice problems with answers, flashcards, extra office hours, and always posts her ppt and lecture problems. She's willing to help, but you have to put in the work.
It doesn't get much better than Mrs. Shifflett when it comes to financial accounting. She has lots of experience in the field, and she is a wonderful professor. She gives you the tools to do well, you just have to utilize them. She is there almost every day and has consistent office hours AND runs tutoring for her students.
Mrs. Shifflett is by far the best accounting teacher for 241. She teaches you exactly how to do every chapter. There is a 5 question quiz or each chapter to help boost your grade - just make sure you study and practice. She completely prepares you for the final and give you a TON of resources to practice. The most clear and helpful teacher I've had
Not too difficult of a class, but not a breeze. There's 5 assignment and 2 in class evaluations. Neither are too tough, but she can be pretty picky about certain stuff. Overall, good class with lots of useful information. Just make sure you pay attention during class and you should be fine.
I loved having her as my accounting professor. She explains things very thoroughly and gives lots of practice in class. I would do the problems out of the book and the work on the cob 241 website. I failed the first test because I didn't do any of those but for the other tests I did the work and got A's.
Professor Shifflett is the best you can get for 241. She is the best COB teacher I have had so far at JMU. Her lectures are really informative and her teaching method is very simple and clear. She does many practice problems of the material on the board almost every class so she jams the material in your mind. I highly recommend her for 241.
Best Accounting Professor at JMU hands down! Makes you work hard for the grade you want, but gives you every resource and chance possible to do so. Capitalize on those opportunities, and you will pass!
I was dreading 241 after withdrawing originally from a different professor. Shifflett breaks down accounting into terms to make it easy.I loved learning from her! Her lectures are great and she walks you through all the problems. Study for her test with the 241 website and youre set! She also prepares you so well for the final! TAKE HER!
By far the best teacher I have had at JMU. She is so passionate about teaching and gives her students everything they need to be successful. There are a lot of grades so there is room for error. I went to her office 1-2 times a week for extra help. Prepared so well for the final. Such a good person.
Accounting is hard but shifflett gives you all the tools for success. She explains quickly in class so preparing and having a basic understanding before class helps a lot!! shes always available for help so see her office hours! this class is really what you put in is what you get out!!
The little directions she does give on assignments and labs are not clear. You never know what she wants. She takes off points for things she doesn't even mention in her instructions. She is rude when you ask for help. She does not give out examples for how to do five big assignments until. soooooo rude
Gives absolutely no indication of how to do things in projects, and expects you to just know how to do them without first being taught how. Gives WAY too much homework for a 1 credit class to the point where i'm losing a LOT of time in my other classes because of it.
This professor teaches as if you are already an accountant in an accounting firm and she is helping you review. DO NOT take this class if you do not know anything about accounting, you will be lost. No extra credit. She posts lecture notes that arent helpful whatsoever, and doesnt upload her PowerPoints. Not a professor I think of as caring.
Went into this class dreading it and worried because you don't get to choose your professor, but Shifflett has been one of the best professors I've had at JMU. Go to office hours she'll help you out. USE THE LECTURE NOTES!! If you get the pleasure of taking her class answer the questions in class and ask for feedback.
Do not take this professor if you have no accounting background, or if you're sensitive.... she only grades tests and quizzes and is not clear when explaining procedures during class.
worst teacher ive had at jmu and its not close, class average was awful but she refuses to curve, rude more than she's not, overall just awful teacher and not a good person. would be shocked if she's still allowed to teach here after the next year or so. avoid at all costs
This is a hard class for all sections so its a choice of poisons. I know a lot of people in my class had a lot of trouble but somehow I understood everything she said easily. She respects hard work so you could be a favorite if you go to office hours. You really have to practice a lot but if you do a good grade is possible, I enjoyed her class.
Accounting is already a tough subject and prof. Shifflett goes through the material so fast and gets mad if you have a question/ dont understand it. She does not grade homework so her course is all tests and quizzes. If you want to do well in her class you should figure out how to teach yourself and spend 3 hours a day studying.
one of those profs that are mom like - give off rude vibes sometimes/makes you feel dumb but same time encourages you to do your best. sat in tutoring all day everyday avg 60 on exams. doesn't curve, goes rlly fast, 80% of practice questions won't b likeon exams. no hw so this class is what u make of it, half class dropped , put in sm work but fail
She cares a lot about her students & wants to see you succeed in her course. I struggled in her class because we had timed quizzes but the time limit wasn't very long. The only other grades in her course are tests. If you want to understand the material well you have to do problems from notes, textbook, modules. She's genuinely a very sweet person!
This class Isn't really that hard I didn't put much effort in the class at first but after the first test I realized I need to put more effort in, I studied the day before the test for every test in the class and averaged an 86 on the last 4 exams in the class including the final.
The class was pretty easy and not as hard as others made it seem to be. She teaches very well and I would recommend her. Dropped your three lowest quizzes
Do yourself a favor and drop this professor and take Leah Kratz. Shifflet is a downright b**** and never answered a single email I sent her. She knows how to get her students in a bad mood with her attitude. She does not grade homework and she makes up the quizzes herself which are very difficult. Your grade is based on tests. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Prof. Shifflett is GREAT! She is super strict and particular with her projects--usually that would bother me. But because she is SO good at Excel, I can't even argue with her! She truly is a master. If you come humble, attentive, and eager to learn, you will get a great deal out of this course. This is the second most helpful course I've taken!
Great Teacher. The only '241 professor I've heard that does practice problems in class on Excel. Take her, I never went to office hours, and if you show up to class and pay attention, you can't fail.
Professor Shifflet is very knowledgable when it comes to excel and she does a very good job explaining certain functions and other info. The only issue is she grades the assignments she is picky at a ridiculous level.
Horrible professor. Do not take her, every other 241 teacher is probably better than her. Doesn't seem to care, just speeds through powerpoints. Dropped her class and took another 241 professor and the class made so much more sense and was easier to learn. TERRIBLE professor
Took ACTG 305 for her and she's a good professor overall. You're going to need to manage your time well around this class so you can ask questions about the assignments, as she wont answer anything within 24 hours in the due date. However, you HAVE to show up and pay attention, as long as you do that, you'll be fine. Great professor, great class.
compared to what i was told before taking her class, she was great! she is very clear about her grading criteria and you learn everything you need to do for the class in class. you need to work on projects outside of class but you dont have to teach yourself anything which i really appreciated. be sure to attend class and youll be fine!
Her class isn't very difficult if you just follow along, but you have to double check her work cause she will grade things wrong based on her mood or take points for nothing. Have to interpret her opinion during assignments, but she will give you points back if you call out her mistakes. Rude outside of class, no rounding, strict attendance policy
Examines every little detail in assignments. Check your work several times
Professor Shifflett's class is no walk in the park, but with effort and using helpful resources like Unstuck ai, you can get through it. Just be ready to spend a lot of time studying.
She's very direct to the point she comes off as rude, but she's well meaning. She has high expectations but the class is easy if you do the work. If you come into the class with no knowledge of excel you will leave with a ton, and it's even enjoyable. that being said, she takes little pity if you don't know what you're doing or make mistakes
COB 305 is the class towards excel mastery. Shifflett is a strict professor who gives clear guidelines for projects and tests, and expects you to follow it exactly. You have 4 tests and 4 projects and attendance is mandatory. You learn everything you need to in class so I suggest not skipping ever!
Rude. Picks favorites. Grades harshly while being unclear on rubric. Will take off extra points just because. Unfortunately if you are an accounting major you're forced to take her so good luck.
this class is great but she is evil
Extremely unforgiving. If something goes wrong with the computer on exams and you are unable to submit on time she will deduct many points. Too bad she's the only teacher for ACTG305.
she is the worst i dont think she enjoys teaching
The class isn't bad but you have to go or you won't learn because she only teaches in class and provides no extra material. The tests are what you do in class, and projects are worth more than tests. She does grade hard. If you mess something up not on the rubric, it can still be a big deduction on your grade.
Good Person and relatively good teacher. I'm just not good at accounting. She has her problems but she will help you in any way she can. She does have a tendency to call you out if you have a wrong answer or don't do it her way but doesn't really punish you for minor stuff like that. Good person and you can most likely pass if you put in the work.
Despite all the negative reviews on Professor Shifflett, she is certainly not a bad professor or person. She gets ticked off by little things, such as clicking of a mouse while she is explaining or people not listening and her having to re-explain herself. However, this class is easy if you show up and pay attention. You come out of it with a cert.
While definitely strict Professor Shifflett made her expectations clear for assignments and tests and graded based off of that. There's not too many points in the class so getting a couple low grades can hurt but the exams were pretty easy and just a lighter version of the assignments that we would get. You need to go to class though
