It's been two years since I had this teacher. I'm still mad about my grade!
In my opinion a terrible teacher. Using books like Malcom X and being one sided on opinions is her way. Highly not recommended. Terrible teacher and in my opinion very **** to white America by her ideals and way of expression about issues.
An excellent speaker in class, with some good points, but her actual homework (and grading methods) make this class feel like climbing uphill on a piece of glass.
took her during a summer session and boy was it tough however it was a good way to get my english out of the way. she ended up cutting out some of the extensive reading that was required. overall a decent class although if you could find a diff prof in summer i'd do that.

My favorite teacher of all time. Instead of forcing her opinion on you, she teaches you a completely different way of looking at the world. Take Tejada if you are an open minded individual who is willing to THINK!
HORRIBLE!! She is unclear, gives too much reading, thinks everyone is ****, & is an overall ****!!! I would never wish my worst enemy to have to endure a class with her. Sure she may be intelligent but that doesn't go to far when your an ****.
Even a Junior College deserves better than this instructor. If you want to do well in this class agree with with everything she says. If she says that Malcolm X was "bad" for the movement don't argue with her unless you like getting C's for your differnce in opinion.

Nothing wrong with being a feminist, but this instructor goes over the top. 3 books have to do with women studies type subject, I wanted to take critical thinking, not womens studies.
Unfair, Biased, Female Shovinist. No instruction---DROP BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. Take Dow, you'll actually learn something and he cares about student success
TEJADA GIVES OUT EXCESSIVE HOMEWORK. SERIOUSLY. SHE'LL HAVE YOU READING 3 DIFFERENT BOOKS FOR HOMEWORK AND HAVE YOU DOING 3 DIFFERENT ASSIGNMENTS IN EACH. SHE'S TOO SERIOUS AND HAS A DRY PERSONALITY. OUT OF THE 6 SEMESTERS I'VE BEEN AT NAPA, SHE'S BEEN THE HARDEST. SHE SHOULD TRY TEACHING IN BOARDING SCHOOL OR SOMETHING.
Many people are complaining about the amount of reading she assings. Well, obviously these students aren't transfering to any universities. As a former Tejada student and now transfer, I strongly recommend her to anybody willing to study and learn about our societies cruel but crucial realities.
If you are truely interested in opening your mind as well as passing Eng 120/5 then this is the teacher for you. She is a multiculturalist AS WELL as an English professor and she knows her topics! This means that she often gets a bad rap but all that you read is NOT true. She is a one of a kind professor and can truely alter your views on the world
The best choice... I have learned more about english (grammer, writing, reading) this one semeseter, than I had my entire life... no joke. You will succeed in your future English classes and write awesome papers after you take this class. Dont pass it up!
I took Tejada my first semester at Napa and honestly I never walked away from a class and felt that I've learned so much. How ever there are alot of reading and writing assignments. She also tends to use one subject throughout the semester, such as the Holocaust that you learn and write about. But shes a great Prof.
Excellent
Whew! A Very Hard & Tough class but I am so thankful that I got through it! (I DO wonder a lot about her youth because there's a lot that she doesn't seem to relate to w/ my generation.) I think everyone should take at least one English class with Professor Tejada. She gives everyone an equal chance for surviving in this world with great skills set
In class you feel like you're sitting on a landmine, and when she calls on you the bomb blows up and you die.
Only expect to get a good grade if you agree with every thing she says. Horrible teacher worst i have had. She believes she is open-minded but is one of the most close-minded people i have ever met. Unfair and biased grading. DROP-NOW!
Not gonna lie, she's not easy. But you will learn a hell of a lot from her. Attendance isn't "mandatory" but you aint gonna pass if you skip it up. She is full of stories and very interesting to listen to even if you may disagree with her views. You can disagree with her as long as you have valid strong points backed up with facts. Take it.
I decided to take Eng 90 to improve upon my grammar fundamentals. This woman has a reputation as the " White Male hating" teacher, I decided that this reputation was unjust and took the class anyways. This teacher is by far the most biased, ignorant teacher I have ever had. Before i revealed my political beliefs all papers were A's, after C-D's.
It's completely TRUE- she is biased. I could tell by the way she spoke that she picked out her favorites right from day 1. And if you're NOT her favorite- good luck. Very bad attitude and patronizing, no equal respect. Never replied to my emails, never showed up to our outside of class meetings NADA- THIS TEACHER DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENT SUCCESS
The class I dread every tues & thurs. She gives out Excessive work she rarely checks & ASSUMES you done the work. Smh, too much >_<
Most horrible teacher i have ever had in my academic experience. She is absolutely offensive, biased and rude. GET OUT NOW
Reading the previous comment forces me to say the following. Every sentence should begin with a capital letter. Racist is spelled incorrectly. She's has an apostrophe when used as an abbreviation for she is. Furthermore, 17/20 is 85%, not 83%, so a little math refresher would also be advisable.
Taking her class made me lose respect in the academic field. Not an ounce of objectivity. She will not tolerate any differing opinions, run away. Run far far away.
Doesn't know how to grade. Not helpful at all. Only accepts answers that are to her liking and express her point of view. She is never responds to your emails and is horrible at being making the class fun. I do not recommend taking her class.
Tejada should be an example for every teacher across the nation! She has the talent to make everything alive;if it is the most boring story, she'll make it the most interesting one.She knows how to get your attention and make you want to participate. There is a lot to learn from her-grammar,techniques for writing an A essay, and life philosophy.
After I took Eng 85 with Tejada,I took her in Eng 90.I learned so interesting stuff which I doubt is taught anywhere else. She opened my eyes for things I haven't seen before.Unfortunately, she doesn't teach Eng 120 this semester...If you have a chance to take her, go for it.You won't regret if you really want to learn something.
She does not give specific instructions on essays and is very vague. She has high expectations on her assignments but does not give examples on the answer she is looking for or exact details. She grades specifically to what SHE likes if your answer doesn't fit or is not adequate enough she gives a zero.
She was very helpful, I am not good at English but I found this class very easy
ESSAY ASSIGNMENTS ARE HARD TO UNDERSTAND. TOO MUCH READING THAT DOES NOT CONNECT TO THE SUBJECTS OF THE ESSAY. MOVES FROM ONE THING TO ANOTHER. THE GRADING IS NOT ACCURATE. OVERALL IT IS VERY HARD TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING IN THAT CLASS AND MORE IMPORTANTLY ITS HARD TO COMMUNICATE WITH HER.
Her classes are challenging, but she is the only English teacher I have had who truly prepares students to transfer. She gives long interesting reading assignments, and challenging essays. I always leave her class in awe from the discussions. She is a very wise and well read person whom I admire. If you have an open mind, you will enjoy her class.
Fantastic teacher; responded to all my emails and questions during, before, or after class. She also encouraged the class to visit her during her office hours before turning in any essay. Her grading rubric is very demanding and expects nothing but complete command over the English language (for an A, of course). Recommended for the serious student
She has extremely high expectations in terms of writing, minimal effort will not cut it for an A. However, she provides ample opportunity for proof reading, and has liberal office hours if a student needs to contact her. Reading material/lecture was always relevant. I highly recommend this course for proficient writers and dedicated readers.
Getting an "A" required agreeing with her politics in class and not challenging her to experience other points of views in essays. Any thought that did not conform to her opinion she treated as factually wrong and irrational. So if you happen to agree with the opinions she shoves in your face, or don't mind pretending to for credit, take her.
Took online class, she ignored emails and blamed her lack of effort on the "blackboard' system. She doesn't grade assignments for months on end. Basically negligent.
Racist, obnoxious, arrogant and close-minded. She rants about "fat white Americans" (direct quote) while she is a little hefty her self. Threatened a student to call the police for harassment after he asked about a grade on a test,( he was not hostile at all). Also, look at some of the reviews on here...a little planted don't you think? hahah
Even though she is a tough teacher I learned A LOT from her. She just wants you to participate and do all your assignments. If you're a good student who likes to learn take her, but if you are looking for an easy A I would def stay away.
She is good teacher, I took creative writing from her and loved it. Very enthusiastic, and will help you if you ask. She is very direct in her assignments, though toward the middle of the semester, she gets a little frazzled and may forget to follow through on an assignment. I would not take her for regular english, as she seems to dislike it.
Tejada is hard but because she expects you to indulge and learn. I have waited for her to teach 125 again so that I can take it with her. I know she is hard, but i also know I will walk out of there with the well rounded knowledge & skills I seek to acquire. She's a remarkable individual and other than this website. I have never heard such negative
Extremely subjective and imposes her view points in an unprofessional and hostile manner that makes the classroom an unwelcoming environment. I would suggest taking another professor as she does not really instruct material rather rants
Horrible
Very hard, however if your into racial debating and trying to expand your mind it's worth taking. YOU HAVE TOO READ, AND TAKE NOTES. You will fail if you don't. I think it's worth taking because it engages you. I don't agree with everything, but there's some crazy truthful stuff shes trying to get too.its like Sociology English.
Professor Tejada is not as bad as people make her seem. She just expects you to be able to handle a workload of a college student. If your lazy just don't even bother taking this class. But if you are interested in learning a lot about race take this class. Very great passionate teacher.
I took this class over the summer. it was a nightmare! BUTTT, you learn so many new things on the way the world works. she is an inspirational professor who dedicates her life on providing an enlightening course for her students. yes it is hard. but it is completely worth it!
DO NOT TAKE HER. I took English 121 and thought that i accidentally wound up in a Women's Studies class. This class doesn't even feel remotely academic because all the material is just about female empowerment. On top of this, her essays/classwork/HW are always convoluted and confusing as hell. She is a terrible teacher and i fear for my grade.
Horrible! Not very helpful at all. Tons of confusing homework. She did not show up to class for a whole week. No email or nothing. Students were very upset because it threw us off track. She didn't even apologize or mention anything about not coming to teach. Unprofessional.
Tejada is a dedicated, no nonsense type teacher. She comes in, says her pleasantries and then begins to teach. You turn in an essay about every two weeks and read about 3 novels. She is completely understanding about emergencies and gives ample time for assignments. IF you want more than just an easy A, I highly recommend Tejada.
I just finished ENGL 121 with Tejada and I think she needs to be teaching cross cultural or gender studies classes and not English necessarily however I did learn some paper writing skills that will stay with me for life. Not a class for any easy A or if you dislike womens studies.
Tejada is an amazing professor. Very passionate about her work and global topics. She has a great array of knowledge and like most Pd.D"s it bleeds into the subject they are teaching. Very understanding. Helpful when you ask. Stays on task. Highly recommend her.
she was awesome and inspirational in her words:)
She is very demanding for 90. In order to pass the papers, don't talk about whether you agree, instead "answer" the question. If you answer it in your essay, you'll get a passing grade. She drops the lowest grade. Remember to do every assignment she assigns, she may not count them as a grade, but she'll use them to add to your grade. A's the class.
If you want to pass her class, you need to show up with the skills of an English 120 student. She doesn't help those who struggle, and you learn very little about language, grammar, or any basic skills of writing. Class is completely subjective to her opinions; grades included. Not recommended, but I'm glad I survived.
If you are looking for an easy "A", you are looking in the wrong place. She gives an almost unbelievable amount of hw: 2 books in 2 hw assignments. However, the material she teaches will stick with you and change your perspective on the world. Definitely worth learning about. Go to class, read everything, do the assingments & you'll survive.
Great Professor
Lots of reading. Tons of papers. Very harsh grading, but pretty understanding when it comes to technical difficulties with the online portion of the class. Going to class is crucial. Probably wouldn't take this class again.
She assigns 4 major writing papers based on the books you read and that's the only thing she really grades you off on. The extra assignments are what it is, extra. If you do them, you get extra credit on them. She's a very strong activist and makes sure that everyone is "woke." I never knew about the social world until she brought up good points.
Professor Tejada challenges her students to be aware and socially conscious adults. I found that her lectures and the assigned readings are relevant to the times we are living in and beneficial to how we live day to day, not just in the classroom and on campus. I would recommend her class if you're not one to accept status quo.
She goes off topic. We studied more history than English.
If you're not willing to push the boundaries of racism, sexism, marxism, capitalism, and anything -ism, then don't take this class. Other than that, the class is pretty clear-cut... Don't take this as a Friday class if you're fully loaded. Expect to read three long books (not a reader). There is Blackboard, which was confusing, too. Lotta' HW!
This class was tough at first, but then I got used to the work load. Tejada is a well-educated woman with lots of knowledge to share with her students. Come to class, read the books, write your essays and you will succeed. Just so you're aware, the class has a clear focus on minority groups and you will learn English through this topic.
Prof. Tejada expects you too dive deep into the assignments-analytically. Be prepared to write a of Essay summaries from the reading. She gives a LOT of chances early in the semester for extra credit! Do all of the assignments and you should pass!
Be prepared for a Sociology class instead of an English class. Didn't learn any writing skills, only learned about how "bad the church and capitalism are." Assigned writing assignments without help in regards on how to properly put together an essay. Doesn't allow for opinions that are different than her own (shows through in her essay prompts).
I started off really stressed out in this class, but once I got the hang of the work load I learned to love it. The readings are so inspiring and enlightening! I'm absolutely in love with the readings she assigns! I highly recommend this class for my fellow feminist. She may be difficult, but for what you learn it is worth it!
Very interesting class;lecture/discussion heavy on capitalism. Homework is overwhelming at first but if you're organized it all works out. Loves to connect with students, had her during the election & she took time to check up on everyone. Not much focus on "how to write/structure," lots of focus on "analyzing." I highly recommend her.
Throughly enjoyed this class. It was based heavily on capitalism while focusing on the oppression of minorities and women through the numerous books and supplimental readings that we were required to read. Her lectures are very passionate and thought awakening. I took this class during the election and she made sure to get our perspective on it.
If you're an easy "A" then keep looking, she is very demanding. She is passionate about what she teaches and is very educated, she expects the best from her students, it is very easy to fall behind in her class if you don't keep up. Overall she just wants her students to succeed by using "tough love" so be ready for lots of homework!
While she is an amazing person who's very passionate about her beliefs of the world, the class just isn't worth going through. The workload is very horrendous compared to other classes. Just take a women's study class rather than this and you'll be set.
Oh My Gosh!! Please be carful when you are registering for her class!!! She is very Delete repeated word tough on her major assignments. And every time that she tells us to write a paper, I am confused about the prompt. She will make you read three story books during the semester and each of the books are at least 200 pages! Please be aware of what
Professor Tejada is extremely passionate in what she teaches. I truly enjoyed her lectures, they were super insightful and eye-opening! however, I did feel like this was more of a political science class. There was a bit more reading than I expected, about 4 books, and I did need to devote A LOT more time to this class over others.
5 books you have to read. Prompts for essays are too difficult to understand and confusing. Feels like a Humanities class instead of English. Besides the five books you have to read more and write a difficult response to it. Trust me, just don't.
Expects a lot from students so be prepared to read several books and write several essays . If you have a right political view good luck.
The material was very complex and could be confusing at first however if you personally ask her to clarify she will make sure you understand before you leave. It is hard getting an A due to the way she grades. However she grades fairly as long as you have a strong argument and provide good evidence in your papers. She is extremely heavy on reading.
The class focuses on feminism, capitalism, and their relation to each other. It was complex, but interesting. She is very open to different or opposing ideas and will clearly answer any questions you have. Grading is very clear and she gives good feedback.
Tejada is a great teacher! Don't let any other review make you think otherwise. She is a college level English professor and she expects nothing less than college level work. Don't take her if you are a slacker or procrastinator. Be open minded and you'll take away more from this class than a grade.
I took Tejada a while back for 120 so I wanted to share my experience. Theres lots of papers, books that have some complex material, not to mention her class focused on minorities and the oppression of women. Take another professor if youre looking for an easy A. If you want to get an A, youre going to have to work for it.
Tejada is an amazing teacher, however her class is pretty tough. If you aren't a person who is on top of their stuff then this isnt the class for you.
Prepare to do quite a bit of reading and writing. She is clear on what she's looking for in your essays, so as long as you follow the rubrics, you'll get a good grade. Never a dull class as she keeps discussions lively and interesting.
I took her 125 English class and it was horrible. Don't take her class. Her class was more like a political science fabricated history class than an English class. Very confusing. Many people dropped her class before the end of the semester. If she doesn't agree with your paper or insights BEWARE!
Eileene Tejada is a wonderful english teacher! She chooses texts that are relevant to today's society instead of texts written in the last century. She's an african american and cuban woman so yes, she does discuss the issues of minorities and women often, but these issues are so important to acknowledge. Prepare to have your eyes opened!
She thinks students only have her class. She does not understand that what she expects is too much. Taking her class was absolutely a big mistake.
She's the worst English professor at NVC. I wentMany of her students from my class failed this course & many dropped the class. Her syllabus is not clear, and neither is her grading. When someone can't come to class, she makes it difficult for the student to learn and have them get unnecessary doctor notes.
By far the best professor I have ever had. She is incredibly intelligent and manages to keep her students engaged, despite the often difficult and rough material in the course. She is well-rounded and full of insightful comments. Those who speak ill of her simply complain because they had a hard time grasping the course, because it is quite intense
Amazing professor! She may come off tough & you may hate her for the amount of work (mainly essays) she gives but it's a worth your while class. Don't take this class if you're not on top of your shi- because the work will pile up when essays come around. But overall, great class, highly recommend!
High expectations of students with little put forth by the professor. Extremely inconsistent workload with some confusing due dates. Can take about 3 weeks to grade assignments, leaving you in the dark about what you're doing wrong, letting mistakes snowball. Assigns loads of writing out of nowhere as if you have no other classes.
Has no communication with her students outside of class. She does not post grades online. I didn't find out my grade until after the final. She never has a proper lecture planned, and instead puts everyone into groups while she sits on her phone doing nothing. She is unclear about due dates, and constantly moves things around. Irresponsible.
Stay away. Stay far away. No feedback Grading is routinely months behind Unclear guidelines for assignments (no page/word counts given) Inconsistent points distribution One time an assignment was posted 3 hours before it was due She doesn't answer emails Basically she's phoning it in and no one can do anything because tenure. Stay away.
I took her English 120 class 20 years ago, and I still think about her and the window she gave me into other people's lives. There is a lot of reading, but it is never dry. Malcolm X is still on my bookshelf. She will demand a lot from you, but she is always on your side. She's also quite patient with sheltered and exuberant contrarians.
She assigns a lot of reading, which is expected for an online class. She does not stay up to date on grading. Most of her assignments have no clear instructions. If you need clarification or help, she is not helpful. I have never been so frustrated in a class.
I liked her, as a person. She made some good lectures, and I appreciated her standpoints. It all went downhill when covid hit and then she would assign random zoom meetings (she'd maybe give us an hour heads up) and not keep up on grading. everything was unclear, she didn't give us clear instructions on anything. Confusing, not worth my time.
Dont take her class unless your ready to writing 3 page papers every single week. She also never grades papers im in my last couple weeks of her class and shes only graded about 4 assignments
Deserving of more praise. Sure, she's a bundle, but if you can appreciate life in it multiplicity, she will show you joys.
Take this class if you love to read and are an English nerd. Really thought-provoking and interesting class but super frustrating. The material was really well put together although the workload is ridiculous. There is almost no effort put up by the professor and doesn't respond to emails. Assignments were graded until the end of the semester.
I'm not totally surprised by the low rating- Tejada holds you to a real collegiate standard. That said, if there was one reason I ended up at NVC it was so I would take her class. She cares for her students like she cares for our world. I have never walked out of a class so deeply changed. I am endlessly grateful to have had her as my professor.
If you do not agree with what she believes, you will get marked down on your grade. She tries to push her own agenda.
Does not grade until the week before grades are due. Does not respond to calls, emails or canvas messages. I had to get ahold of her through her SFSU email.
Took months to grade as
Took months to grade assignments, gave little to no feedback, unresponsive to most of my questions and emails. I was wrongfully kicked out of class a few weeks before the end of the semester, it took her more than two weeks to fix it (had to constantly remind her of the situation), gave me less time for the major papers missed and graded harshly.
I hated this class worst class I have EVER taken. She gives way too much material, there is no way for you to finish it each week. The essays are assigned with barely any instructions, the rubric is incredibly vague, and her feedback is unhelpful and useless. I took this class because I thought it would be easier than my university but it was awful
very difficult class. do not recommend.
Very very very intense workload, doesn't give feedback, and is very difficult to please. An incredibly interesting class, I would love to listen to her lecture but as a teacher it's a nightmare!
One of the smartest teachers I have met, but she puts too much of a workload on herself and the students which affects the quality of the class. Her grading was based on four Major Writing Assignments and I didn't receive any grading or advice from the first three until the last week of the semester.
Professor Tejada holds students to high standards, but it's worth it. The workload is heavy, with lots of reading, but the material is engaging. Using resources like Unstuck ai alongside the textbook can really help with preparation. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding class.
Absentee professor, disengaged from the coursework and almost completely unavailable for questions - if she answers at all, which is unusual, it may come a day later or a week. Does not provide any feedback on assignments aside from an occasional copypasted "refer to rubric", without specification. Impossible to know where you stand or get help.
