decent enough guy, not very clear, obnoxious voice.
Very sarcastic, badgers students and belittles them in class. Wasn't very clear although he knows the subject but can't teach it at the intro level. Not receptive to questions even though this is an intro level class.
Excellent as long as you make an effort. Can be sarcastic, especially if it's obvious you haven't even tried to figure it out.
Really, really helpful guy. Knows his stuff and is funny in class. Tends to make fun of people who don't try to do the work.
This guy is very unfair and he picks his favorite students in the class, and helps them. Very rude and I don't recommend this class if you really need an A.
Really funny guy - picks on people in class if they haven't done the work or won't even try, but is really helpful if you make an effort. Great sense of humor and really covers what you need for the next class.
Dude this guy was awesome. His class is no harder than it should be. Of course you have to study if you want to even get a B, but if you do study even 2-3 hours for each test you will be completely fine. Funny guy. If you want an easy A though, take another class and dont waste your time.
great techer. tests are easy; everything is multiple choice, except the labs. Also works at UCLA
A relatively easy class. Reading the book is helpful, but not neccessary for an A as long as you listen to his lectures. Doing the homework, however, will prepare you really well for the tests. You get a lot of time for the tests and although each question, no partial credit, is worth a lot, if you understand the material, they are not hard.
This guy doesn't know anything about chemistry. He picks on students and if you dont ask him in class he wont pay attention to you in class when you need help. very dry and boring class, Dont take his class if you have other choices.
it's better to read a book before the lecture so in that way, it helps you more. his tests are relatively easy so that wouldn't give you a problem unless you are seeking for super asy-A teacher. (class was okay) he loves exceptions so be sure to memorize the exception from the book if there are some.. (i.e: exception of electron config for Cr/Cu)
I didn't like chem before taking this class. but, I like chemistry now because of him. He encourages people to work hard. I think it is really good. It is not an easy~ but it is not impossible to get an A.
This professor is the worse teacher ever. He makes you feel stupid if you don't know everything coming in. Offers help, but then when you ask him he makes you feel like you are the idiot.
Not an easy A, but this guy is really helpful. He did make fun of some people in class, but only when they asked stuff he had already covered a million times. He's not a big fan of people waiting until the last couple weeks and wanting extra credit. Great class.
Dr. Schmidt is determined that his students will go on to advanced Chem classes and have no problems. He is tough but has a heart. If, like me, you are not a math person, it will not be an easy A but Dr. Schmidt makes sure you set up problems correctly and goes over all of your homework questions. Study Guide helps. It's a lot of work.
Best prof. I have ever had. This was a course I was not looking forward to taking but I was very fortunate to get the best chemistry prof. at Santa Monica teaching chem. 10.
Good professor for science major or for those planning to take more chem classes. Not reccomended for those new to chemistry. Doesnt show alot of heart or compassion for students, and most of the work has to be done on your own; doesnt really take personal time to make sure all student are doing well, however, i never visited him during office time
he is the worst nightmare! extrememly rude and careless about his students. yells at students when in bad mood. doesn't curve tests, if you has him for help, he would say "just study more" never smiled even once, when you tell him "thank you" he would reply you with a awkful look and speechless. worst chem prof EVER! HE IS SO RUDE! WORST! do not ta
OH MY GOD. do not take. you will regret it. he enjoys failing students and confuse them. super tricky tests. n i mean SUPER TRICKY. you'll know what i mean when you take him.. but again DO NOT TAKE! the textbook is the worst chem book i've ever used which makes the class even wrose than it already is. again if you take him... you will hate youself.
Dr. Schmidt really tried to teach, but he doesn't project the information well. A lot of students ditched class because they found it hard to learn from him. In order to do well on the tests study very hard and do homework problems. The tests are often very tricky.
I find it interesting that those who often speak poorly of him are often weak students. He's clear from the begining:If you cant put the time and effort each week, dont bother coming back! He's very clear and although it may as if he has no compassion for students having difficulty, ive found he really those. High expectations create high results!
A really great Professor! He's incredibly personable, easy to talk to and incredibly patient with repated questions. He answers e-mail really fast and he will stay after class as long as you like. My favorite professor at SMC. Tests aren't that hard, a lot of A's and B's in the class...but you have to do the work!
Amazing professor! If you study, you will do very well. Very patient in answering questions! Just great experience overall! Tests are not too difficult, although a couple of tricky questions may set you back a little. I can't imagine better teacher! Just attend lectures and lab, and you should do quite well!
As if the book weren't confusing enough this professeor tries to trick you in the exams. Honestly he asks randon questions that will always make you doubt. Please read the reviews, he doe not grade on a curve and he is not just on people who study.
Professor expects a LOT from his students. His lectures are pretty clear, but you'll need to thoroughly read the textbook to truly understand the material. He's much friendlier one-on-one, so ask him questions after class. BTW, the textbook is horrendous - confusing and unnecessarily difficult. Watch the tutorials - they're cheesy but helpful!
Corrupted class and a rude dictator who barks for no reason. This class is unfair, disgusting, and complicated. He picks favorites in the class and ignores others. His lectures are very boring and useless. 3 exams 1 final and labs make ur grade. screw up? u get a C! He doesnt like young people and frowns constantly against progress and youth! scary
Trust me people. Compared to other professors like Gallogly. He's not so bad. Plus, he actually care about his student's grades and sometimes gives out CURVE!
this is the most honest comment about this teacher.. he is TOUGH, im not going to lie. but if you put in the work and effort that COLLEGE STUDENTS are supposed to put in.. this class should be a piece of cake.. i failed the class because of my own laziness and my constant absence from lectures..
keep in mind-there is NO such thing as an EASY chemistry class. GO to his lectures and TAKE NOTES. Definitely talk to him after class, he is very helpful then. He is fair, humble and loves the subject. He is striaght to the point. I took him 3x. Tests are short so each problem is worth ALOT of points.
Good professor. Clear lecture, explains concepts well with lots of examples. Readily answers questions during and after class. Tests are multiple-choice on Scantron, so no partial credit if you just make a stupid mistake, but they're not overly difficult. Teaches and tests from the text, so READ IT and do the homework and you should do well.
THE CLASS AVERAGE WAS A C-, doesn't that say enough?
This professor is Okay, and hard. You just have to study and do the HW problems, read the book, re-read the book and etc... My grade was above the class average and I was somewhat struggling at first, but then I studied realllly hard. I will admit that this professor is hard, but then again this was the summer session.
I'm currently in his class. He's so badass and just chill. You actually learn!! He cares about his job and stays after class to answer questions. Only lazy students complain. Instead of bein a comedian like Balm, he quides you to success. Best chem teacher SMC will ever have. Just remember that "there are no shortcuts " work hard and earn the A!!!
Avoid this guy as much as possible. The worst chem professor ever. very unclear, very unprofessional and very boring!
Im in Schmidts class currently (fall '09). I suggest if you're traped in having to take this guy 1.wait until next semester 2.you take it at another college. if you dont decide to take my advice and have the worst teaching experience ever, in the end you can report him..thats what I ended up doing.I got an A but I think he deserved one for A-hole.
Just take another prof to save time bc you'll end up dropping his class anyways. At first his class seems cool but just wait til the first exam. His tests are too hard, some q's are easy but some are just so ridiculously tricky. He doesnt curve or drop. ALOT of students dropped or got a W bc it was so bad.
This class is the source of agony depression and suffering Be prepared to bury yourself in your chem book He, himself, isn't horrible It's just the way the class is structured. I hate the multiple choice, its tweaked. I wish I was smarter + had einstein's brain only then would I be worthy of the wonderful A that this class offers To hell with chem!
first in ANY chem class, half of students drop. no matter what. I personally like him, hes helpful and answers question, tries his best, if you cant understand, go read the book. I think his test hardness is fair (go take other prof's mock test, you will see how hard it is) id say you gotta try harder
This guy is hard. Tests are somewhat a little more difficult than average. An average Joe could nail a B if they try hard but he gave a very difficult midterm with very little time and it had a lot of weight in the total grade. Another tip for any chemistry class is to get a cool, smart, and nice lab partner, yes judge em by the way they look.
Tests are kind of hard, but he tells you upfront what will be on them, so all you have to do to get an A is do the homework. He's always willing to explain anything you don't understand.
He is a REALLY good teacher. Go to his office hours if you have question and if you need help, he is really willing to help. If you wont study, or u think this is an easy class, its not. Chemistry is hard and you do need to study and he will help you understand how to do the work. GREAT TEACHER!!
Schmidt is a great professor. He is not easy and expects you to know the material. He is straight forward about what he expects. I used to go to his office hours a lot which really helped and I still go to him for help with chem 11. Great guy, but be warned that he does have favorites, so make sure you get on his good side early on!
Schmidt is the best, very engaging, really understands the material and spends tons of time in his office hours totally eager to help! Schmidt is strict about lab procedure and about showing up for class but only to be consistent with school policy. I still go to his office hours when I need help, not my current teachers. Schmidt rocks!
He doesn't baby you. He expects that you read the chapter BEFORE you come to class. He will give you shortcuts for rules and logic, but he stresses a deep understanding of concepts. Overall I think he's a good professor, but he is hard, and you cannot expect any slack, or mollycoddling.
Good Professor, spends time with students and cares about their success. If you are looking for an easy chem grade then don't take this class, but if your major depends on chemistry to any significant degree, then you won't be looking for an easy grade. Reading often helps a lot. Prof knows judo. don't mess around! :-)
He is a good teacher. He cares about the students. He expects you to be mature, so come to lab prepared. His tests are similar to the homework. If you take the class seriously you will do fine. He is not like one of those easy teachers you WILL have to work hard for the grade you want.
Stay away from this professor, wait an extra semester if you have to. Insults students in his labs, accuses them of cheating on their lab reports, accusing them of not doing homework or studying, predicting failure every lab period of his students. Cursed and screamed at a student for using cellphone in lab, teaching style outdated .
Dr. Schmidt is the best! He is extremely knowledgble/experienced in the field, always connects lectures to relevant phenomena in real life. Exams are straightforward, even easy if one does the assigned hw, which many don't because they're not graded. Lazy pre-meds tend to complain about a lot, but those in class to learn have a great experience.
He doesn't know how to teach, when you ask a question he gets angry for no reason. He says there is no curve, but everybody would probably fail without a curve, so I don't know if he ended up curving or not. Concepts are easy but his exams are written in a way to trick you. I would take this class only if I had no other choice.
He means well but he often comes across negative. One on one he isn't so bad. Tests 1,3,4,and final are fair, but watch out for Test 2 it's meant to weed out the weak. Lab helps improve your grade. Read the book and do the problems at the back of the chapter. If you work hard getting a B is totally possible, only a few in the class of 50 got an A
I dont know why he is getting such a low score on here. He is an awesome cool teacher who really wants you to do well. If you go to his office hours you will see his true colors. He is a great guy and is very good at problem solving and really knows all his stuff. I would highly recommend him.
Mr. Einhard Schmidt is a very good teacher. He is very sarcastic and it seems to upset people.
Do not i repeat DO NOT take chem 12 with him. I have a 4.0 and i am killing myself to get a B. He does not know how to teach when you walk out of his class you become confused because he is so unclear. If he is the only teacher available then wait a semester because he's just going to waste your time.
Good professor, however, you must be willing to put in A LOT of work. He introduces material by assuming that you have already read the text, and does not provide extra learning materials such as practice exams or extra cr. Lab is confusing if you have never taken a science before, and he does not upload ANYTHING to corsair so clarity is off.
worst teacher ever. be prepared to read and learn solely from the book and still fail after studying 6 hours every day
So I hear he's telling his fall sections that the class is doable and his summer section had lots of A's. this is coming from a 4.0 student ok? Save yourself now. It's a trap. You WILL not do well unless you are a genius I mean a chem whiz. Drop before the W deadline
Strict. Knows material very well, but perhaps relies on powerpoint on the last fourth of the semester. Learned a lot when he used the board. His lectures, along with the textbook left me with a better understanding of chem. Overall, a great professor. He's very fair when it comes to tests. He'll never test you on anything not covered in lectures.
He's tough. However, he is a REALLY good teacher! He made me cry a few times because he is tough, but he is a very good teacher! If you want to be prepared for more advanced Chem, take him! Do not take him for chem 11 or 12 if you took an easy professor for chem 10, you won't be prepared. Set aside 1-2 Hrs per hour of class time for HW!
Oh.... he keeps complaing about students that they do not study, they are lazy. I have never seen such professor who is not trying to do his best to make students to understand the material... Believe me, I finished all higher courses of maths and physics with A's. But his class just destroyed my GPA. We had almost 40 students, and only 12 are left
To get a good grade, you are gonna end up with the tutors and youtube videos, because he is helpless. And to get an A is impossible in his class.
Don't take him! Trust to the RateMyProfessor. Nobody in our class got A.
Very tough, but the best chem professor.
Doesnt round exam/qz. Posts notes/class examples online. Notes based off book. Study notes and problem sets to pass. Teaches math part well but not critical thinking; this doesnt help on multiple choice part of exams but helps for free response. Go to office hours. Record lectures to understand better. 4/6 pop quizzes, 4 exams, and 1 cum. final.
My best form of advice: do not think that you know the first 4 chapters just because you got an A in chem 10. Professor Schmidt makes himself available for questions at all hours of the day, he wants everyone that works for the A to get A's in his class. With that being said, you have to put in a lot of time to perfect the material on his tests.
I have never rated a professor. Although we had a few disagreements. Professor Schmidt pushed me to the limits of my cognitive ability. Your grade in this class is earned not give. If you really want to be challenged. If you really want to understand the nuances of chemistry and if you want professor that works as hard as you do. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Good professor. He tends to usually give study guides and practice questions on topics of what is going to be on the exam. The exam consisted of multiple choice and non-multiple choice problems solving. Multiple choice questions tend to focus on checking to see if you understand certain concepts very well. Not an easy A, but a good professor.
Dr. Schmidt normally teaches Chem 11/12, so taking his Chem 10 felt like cheating because he taught us a lot of what we need to know for future chem classes! Chem 11 and 12 are a completely different animal than Chem 10, but again and again in future chem classes, I knew a lot more than my classmates, and I owe that to Dr. Schmidt. Take him!!!
Tests were incredibly hard, and the class was a ton of word
Not an easy A, have to really work for it. Emphasis on knowing and understanding concepts, instead of memorizing shortcuts/patterns/equations. Very patient, open to all questions. Always willing to help and re-explain concepts. 5 exams @ 70 questions/2.5hrs, labs, and HW. Tough exams, re-doing HW helps. Very promptly responds to e-mails!
Uses Achieve and this textbook helps along with the hw. Test problems are heavy and exam is timed. Better hope your computer doesn't crash. Review hw problems and practice completing the hw in a timed manner will help you prepare for exams. Read textbook and use the activities that come along with it. First chapters are review but you must study.
Dont take him if ur not willing to spend most of ur days on his class & his class only. I understand Chem is a heavy subject but he makes it nearly impossible to pass with his million question exams. Given his hard to follow lectures, the pandemic & everything being online, I was teaching myself this subject. I learned more on YouTube than from him
I am very surprised this professor gets any good ratings at all. He gets annoyed when you ask questions, his explanations are poor and sometimes downright incorrect, exams 90% of your grade with labs 10% all based on correctness, no help on labs. I don't know how anyone passed honestly. Do NOT take him, even if it sets you behind a semester. Trust.
The course, itself, is really challenging. That being said, you will need to study A LOT. Don't ask a lot of questions and come to the lectures prepared. He is really tough and sometimes rude, but you'll get used to it. Exams are tricky and EXTREMELY HARD. So, you need to allocate at least 5 hours daily. Overall, not the nicest guy.
If you want constant anxiety and stress, enroll in his class. Get ready to learn solely from the book. The class is really tough, and you need to put in too much effort only to get a C. He is so unclear on his hw. An A is nearly impossible unless you are a chem major. Do NOT take him. He is the worst prof you can ask for. Just anyone else.
Just read the textbook and you'll be good. His HW is a bit confusing, but the grading is only based on completion, so just write sth. Overall, you need to self-study and self-teach yourself a lot for this course. Find extra practice. The course will push you to work HARDER than EVER. He is not easy, but if you put in the effort, you'll earn an A.
He really isn't as bad as everyone talks about. Go to the lectures and you'll do well. His tests are hard, but he literally tells you the answers to his tests during lectures. If you take him and work hard, you'll master chem 12. Believe me, I learned chem 12 from him better than all of my other chem classes and that was only because he was tough.
Prof. Schmidt is a caring and humane person! His lectures are not fully comprehensive, and reading the textbook is a must in order to understand the material. His exams are fair, and there are some extra credit questions among the free-response questions, which is helpful since the multiple-choice questions are hard! You won't regret taking him!!!
This is not the class you will be get baby-ed in. His teaching style is likely unfavorable to most, so I relied heavily on the textbook, my SI leader, and tutoring to understand material. He, without a doubt, knows so much about chemi, but do not wait for him to teach you the material. Read the book, do practice problems, go to office hours.
Horrible
We didn't receive any feedback or grades for our assignments and quizzes, so we were completely unaware of our academic progress. Approaching the professor felt unnecessary because our attempts were met with ridicule and did not provide the motivation to continue seeking guidance.
You are expected to teach yourself a lot and you must do a lot of studying on your own to keep up with his class. If you could avoid this professor for the chance of a better grade with a different professor you should.
He's a really great guy and he's really smart, but he's not the best teacher. I'm a stem major and this class lowkey made me reconsider all of my life choices. He does have office hours after every lecture, though, which is a plus. But don't take this class unless you're already good at chemistry from high school
Prof. Schmidt's lectures can be hit-or-miss, but with the right approach, you can succeed. Rely on the textbook, study sessions, and tools like unstuck AI to supplement the material. Tough grading, but doable if you put in the work.
I personally did not like his teaching style, it felt like he was not enjoying it to be honest. Do not ask for help on a lab because he will not help you, even if it is a question on the steps. He would also go through the slides very quickly which I did not like.
