Great class and teacher. Very interesting, lecture doesn't always match up with lecture, lots of reading, reasonable testing, just make sure you go to all classes and take notes. You'll takes pages of notes per class from Powerpoint. Only review slides available through blackboard. You'll love this class easy A/B with some effort.
She was extremely arrogant and does not care for the student's success in the class whatsoever. She did not answer questions when presented to her in lecture, her tests did not match up with either the lecture or the reading. I would avoid her if you could. Very hard to get an A.
I do not recommend this professor. The subject was interesting but she was all over the place. She hasn't taught in 5 years because she has been out in the field. Lecture and tests were unmatched.; I ended up dropping the class. I think it would be easier if I was majoring in Anth. but I am not!
wow... run...unless you like going to class all the time, taking mad notes to the point of carpal tunnel, and studyn your ass off for a B. tests and inclass assignments make up most of your grade, and she factors attendence only to your detriment.
she is the worst teacher....so mean and does not listen to any suggestions given. she is very arrogant and on a power trip. exams are ridiculous...they never match up to any type of study guide and test random information as opposed to main ideas.
Being outside the major, this class was not impossible to follow along with. The readings were difficult, but helped me go into depth. You must stay on your toes with this class, finish all your readings, not miss class. But this class was rewarding for those who want to learn how to think critically.
She must have read this..because this semester, she was *way* eager to help her students: takes things almost too slow, answers all questions, wants suggestions and has study guides for all tests. As long as you follow the study guide, you'll do fine. I got 95% on all tests. But, you *have* to go to class to get her in class assign. points.
Sucks. thats all there is to it. Seriously. Not helpful to students and is extremely defensive when asked a simple question. When I think of what her class was like I get sad.
Horrible. I am a straight-A student and I got a C. Lectures don't make sense, and tests are too hard. When asked to clarify something, she makes it more complicated. Try to avoid this teacher
This was a very difficult class. The difficulty was due to two reasons, some confusing lectures and my study habits. Since I couldn't do anything about the lectures I decided to revamp my study habits and was able to come out of the class with an A. GO TO STUDY GROUPS, they were helpful and made a significant difference in my exam grades.
So boring. and she made the test questions very confusing and misleading on purpose.
I love Dr. Sobo! If you care about theory, you will too. The tests were straight from the study guide which was straight from her lectures and the books. If you just took the study guides and did a wiki search on each topic, rarely came to class, and never bought the book, you'd still end up with a passing grade. No paper! :) She is the best!
I thought she was great. Passionate about the subject and more than willing to explain things repeatedly so the class understood. Really approachable. I NEVER read the book, however, the reader did appear on the tests. Tests were semi-challenging, highly recommend you go to the review sessions with the TA. ALL you need to do. Easily passable.
She was fairly reasonable. I came to class everyday. The really challenging part was the paper. Everything else kind of fell into place. She does design the tests so that most people get C's. I don't know why....
This class was ridiculous but gratifying...the 10 page paper was demanding but not un-doable and the research/observations behind it were fun but still, she is an insanely hard grader and will make you work for a B. that being said, if you are serious about school, take her because she will make you a better student/Anthropologist/student
She is very nice, but confusing. Her powerpoints are hard to follow, and she gets side tracked easily. I recommend to try to find another professor.
It's obvious that Dr. Sobo really loves teaching. She's very energetic and is very eager to help students do their best. I think that the readings are more interesting than in most classes, but some people might have difficulty, because she did not use a text book. If you go to class most of the time and do most of the readings, you should be OK
Lectures were really interesting. She did a great job keeping me interested. I learned a lot. Tests were tough. Despite the fact that there were study guides and I felt I had a pretty good grasp of the material, a lot of the questions caught me unprepared. No paper and 3 exams mostly multiple choice about 20% short essay, short answer, & fill-in.
I absolutely loved this class. The TAs put on amazingly helpful review sessions several times before tests. There are never essays/papers. Do not take if you are not interested in Anthro or if you are not likely to go to class. In class activities do contribute to your final grade and attendance is mandatory is you want more than a C.
Prof. Sobo is an excellent professor, yet the grading is HARSH! She needs a textbook & although her lectures are clear, the tests aren't. I am an A/B student & got a C+. The tests are short answer/mult choice & essay. I thought I knew the material 100% but ended up with a C on the final. I wouldn't take another class with her!
Very interesting class. If you do not study for the finals, then you won't get an A. Make sure to study! And go to review sessions.
I'm in her online summer class. Her captivate presentations are awesome, she covers everything. The online readings are LONG and boring. There are weekly quizzes/responses that are easy, and one big weekly test that has everything in it. A lot of material so I suggest staying on top of it. There are also two (not too hard) papers.
I took her this summer online. She's really a great teacher. Best online class ever! A lot of work for a summer class but somewhat interesting.
What a wonderful teacher! If you want to anthropology, take her. Very Passionate! Very fair! Her online course is VERY organized, nothing like other online courses.
Absolutely wonderful teacher. I took her online and she is the most helpful teacher. She responds to emails quickly and she did not bore me. I'm taking another class with her next semester in person. I highly recommend her.
There was a lot of information presented in this class... but the tests on the materials were SO SO EASY. IF you actually just READ the assignments, watch the power points, etc. You SHOULD be able to do quite well. HINT - take notes based on the unit objectives!
I took her online class and really enjoyed it. It's a lot of work and very time consuming, but so much thought and care is put into her lectures and assignments that it makes it worthwhile. She really wants her students to succeed and it's evident.
Hands down the most interesting class I've taken at SDSU. Dr. Sobo makes an online class feel like it's face to face, and she is very helpful and involved throughout the course. There are a lot of materials to master but the tests and papers are decent. I highly recommend this class AND this professor to anyone!
I really like Anthropology in general, but I think almost anyone would enjoy this course because of its real life application. I took the online course and found it to be really easy. The tests are not difficult and though there are two big papers, they are not difficult to write.
Amazing professor! Her class was interesting, enlightening, and life changing. (swear she didn't pay me to say that). She cares so much about your success and understanding of the material. There is a lot of work involved so don't fall behind! weekly quizzes, 2 not so hard papers. Got an A- in the class. only 1 short book required.
If you do the work, you'll find that this class is fairly easy. Don't slack off and pay attention to the guidelines for her papers. Two papers. Six tests and one dropped.
I took the online version and it was a lot of work, but I can use my laptop at work so it was a good deal for me. You end up reading the entire book and every week there are modules you have to to. Grade comes down to 6 tests and 5 short reports (500 words) with one test dropped. Pretty easy and she is very helpful if you need it.
Lots of busy work, but incredibly easy, tests are easy follow study guide, take good notes, prof is VERY enthusiastic/caring,too socialist for me but that's cultural anthropology classes & she's not snobby about it just a bit biased.Lot of regurgitation of things I already knew (I'm anthro major)& sometimes dumbs it down too much but easy & nice prof
First online class I took and it was surprisingly incredibly organized. I like how this class felt like I was one-on-one with the professor. Anyway, asides from the workload (as everyone else is saying), she's a caring and nice teacher. Videos she chooses are fun to watch. Do your readings.
Online class. Again, toooo much reading and writing for an elective. It is not my major, I can't care less, make it easier for other majors. Curve? No an option.
Great teacher! She cares about the students! In fact she gives so much material to read that you will be only doing her class this semester. No others, no friends, no fun. Avoid her if it is not your major. ...or even if it is.
Eventhough this was an online class, it was pretty consuming and hard. There was a lot of readings and videos. Grading strict. Tests and essays confusing.
DONT TAKE...wayyy too much work! shes nice but not worth taking. too much busy work and tests are hard.
Wow. Waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy too much work. Nice teacher, but assignments are confusing, grading rubric is very unclear, and again, waaaaaayyyyyyy too much work. Very interesting, but all the work takes away from the overall learning objectives. Too much time spent trying to pass the tests as opposed to actual learning. Too much busy work!!!!!!!!!
i was expecting way way more work because of what i read on here, class wasnt as hard as i thought it would be, the modules are fun and easy to follow, Professor Sobo is always available through email and answers super fast, Course work is relatively easy to understand, oh and i got an A :-) if youre lazy dont take this class
I took the online version of this class and it was very easy to follow once I got the hang of it. It's an easier class as long as you stay on top of it. There is a lot of work though but she wants to help all the students the best she can. I enjoyed it. :]
Absolutely wonderful professor. I've never taken anthro before but she made it easier. You do have to be prepared to do work, but she provides good outlines and example papers. I would definitely take her again.
very disorganized professor. she gives so many assignment that one can handle. It is a GE course but requires the work of a graduate level course. Her exams are extremely difficult and very confusing. The wording of the questions is terrible. Two ridiculous papers are assigned also. DO NOT TAKE HER
I'm torn because I've taken her online before for 102 and she was so clear with her wording, expectations, etc. But when I took her for 402, I had a lot more trouble understanding quiz wording and didn't do as well as I know I could have, because I love anthropology. I'd take her again, but not online.
She is awesome. I took the online course with no problems. She makes it so easy for you. Take NOTES on the SLIDES because she tells you word for word what is on the quiz/tests. She'll put trick answers, but if you study, your golden. She'll e-mail you for deadlines along with posting them on the site. Passed with an A.
I took this class as an elective, but ended up really liking it because of Prof Sobo. The course is IMPECCABLY structured & organized. You know exactly what is expected of you, what you're supposed to know, & the material is explained clearly. I got an A- only because I missed a couple assignments. I'm an accountant and even I enjoyed this class!
The only reason why I was happy with a B was because I thought I was going to receive a C (my lowest grade). I read and took notes on everything, but tests always had 2 answers that were very close- her advice was to chose which ever sounded the best. TOTAL BS! Tests answers are most of the time 50/50.
She presents the material as if you are a two year old and then asks questions on exams as if you are a post graduate student. This wouldn't be so bad accept there are only 26 questions. No room for error. The papers are really short and are boring to write. The text is pointless. I found Youtube videos that would suffice. I got a B.
Even if it's a 400 class, for it being a GE, there's SO MUCH WORK. she talks to you like your 2, and tests questions are completely different than what she taught. the 2 papers are easy. you get easy module points, but theres only 26 q's per test, so if you mess up, it'll hurt your grade. also, 2 books to read and lots of tedious things to read
Very interesting class! I had no experience with anthropology before and this class definitely sparked my interest. Beware there was an insane amount of work but if you're good with deadlines this is your class. Dr. Sobo is definitely willing to answer questions. She does talk to you like a two year old with websites like kidshealth being used.
Repeats herself a LOT or says things over and over in different ways. But, she is very nice, helpful, and organized. Class was easy and sometimes had a lot of work. Learned some interesting things in this class.
Don't know what everyone's going on about regarding graduate level work or tests. Lectures to you like you're a middle schooler, asks questions in about the same way. Exam wording isn't always great though. This class takes me about an hour of work two days a week. Picked up some interesting stuff, but overall quite uninspiring.
The best online class I've ever taken! Dr S is incredibly clear in her expectations and her grading policies. Her textbook is easy to read, and her lectures and other materials available prepare you for her tests. She drops your lowest test score and essay. I would love to take another one of courses and I'm not an anthropology major!
If you are just looking to complete a GE requirement, I wouldn't recommend this class. It is a lot of work, especially for someone like me with no prior knowledge in Anthropology. However, if you're interested in Anthro, Dr. Sobo is a great professor and the material is interesting. Just be prepared for A LOT of reading and writing!
Dr. Sobo is very thorough. The course is interesting, but very labor-intensive.You'll read the entire 355 page textbook--written by her--plus write 5 essays, take 6 exams, including a cumulative final, plus read a 301 page non-friction novel. Her demeanor is calm;organization of the material is well-done. But,she grades the essays too meticulously.
Responds quick. good resources. The exams kill me. They are too wordy, so I have a hard time. I spend more time deciphering her questions asked and waste time. I have no clue what she is even asking. Not a fan of the book that's required, also written by her. I seriously pull my hair. JUST GET TO THE POINT! BE SHORT AND SIMPLE! grrr
Very easy course. She is the most organized teacher I have ever had, so it's really easy to stay on top of everything. As long as you do the assigned reading from the book and view her lectures you should get an A. The people on here saying that she gives too much work probably have easy majors and don't know a thing about hard classes.
Best online class I've taken! The course was really easy to navigate and expectations were clear. Assignments were easy and allowed multiple tries. Tests were a bit tough but totally doable. 6 tests, 5 250-word "essays", lowest score of each is dropped. I didn't think I'd like anthropology and ended up loving it. Great class.
Dr. Sobo is an amazing lecturer. She is super clear on what she expects you to learn. Although the textbook was written by her, it is extremely easy to understand and actually enjoyable to learn! 3 exams, 1 cumulative final. Multiple discussion board participation, no more essays. Quiz every week (10 Qs, but only 8pts needed for 100%). TAKE HER!!!
So this teacher is the reason why teaching methods matter, I'm not the best student but taking her class online was awesome. It was interesting, mind-opening and all in all fantastic! I never had such a enthusiasm to read the material, but this material is fascinating and she makes it even more enjoyable.
I took Anth 402 online. I found the material interesting and clear cut. The book is interesting and must be read in order to pass. This class was easy and although I did not care for Sobo I would take another class of hers just for how easy is was.
Im an anthro major so this online class was a breeze. The book was 14 bucks on Amazon, read one chapter / take a 10 question quiz a week, that's it. 13 quizzes but lowest 3 are dropped. 4 tests but lowest 1 is dropped. The book is a super light / easy read and if you're an anthro major it's basically a broad review of the discipline. Easy A!
Straightforward class. She has optional podcast lectures, but I found them to be insanely helpful! The class is interesting for a GE and took no more than an hour out of my week. She drops three of your lowest quiz grades and your lowest test. She also provides EC points for taking her feedback survey. Her response rate on emails is quick too.
Dr. Sobo has a clear mindset of what she wants her students to take from her course, and it shows in her organization skills. The textbook (written by her) has engaging material and diction that help you see the world from an anthropologists's POV. Not a hard course at all! Take her to feel what it's like to be Indiana Jones ! :)
Took this class online, and it was very user-friendly. If procrastination is your thing, then do not take this class because it is easy to fall behind. I really enjoyed the lectures. They are basically PowerPoint videos with the prof's voice explaining thing. I've never seen so much effort from a teacher for an online class before. She really cares
The class was really straightforward. She outlines what you need to do each week. A few discussion boards but tests and quizzes are a big part of your grade. It is really helpful to be in the library using your laptop and having the online textbook open on one of the computers during a test *wink wink*.
What an amazing class. I thought I knew a decent amount amount anthropology but this class truly opened my eyes and has changed the way I view humans and society. I (willingly and happily) read the entire textbook which is an easy read. Only complaint is some test questions were not relevant to the overall concepts we were learning.
I liked the way this class was structured online. Very organized and clear schedule. You need the textbook to pass. Lots of reading (textbook and articles), videos (lectures and documentaries), chapter quizzes each week, 4 tests. Study the terms listed on her weekly schedule, read, and keep up with the work to pass.
Super clear and easy online class. The way she structured the class was easy to follow with clear instructions and guidelines. Prerecorded lectures were concise and to the point. She wrote the textbook, so the quiz/test questions come straight from the assigned readings. Drops lowest test and 3 lowest quizzes. I learned so much.
Great professor and class! Class was fully online very easy to navigate. Weekly lectures and short quizzes plus some quick side activities. 4 section tests and optional final. Lectures never more than 45 mins and covered material perfectly. So much additional resources to help students grasp the material. 100% recommend. Very interesting class
I acknowledge that this is a great class. I did exceptional in it as well. I just would not recommend taking this class. Her wording is terrible... Just to say "yes, you don't have to take the test" it takes her 2 paragraphs. Also, the class is also only centered on Sobo's belief system so if that works for you great but for everyone else it sucks.
Sobo shouldn't be teaching this course. I don't care what her credentials are, maybe she is better at working in the related industry, but not teaching it. The other reviewer dated 5/4/17 nailed it. Great class, but Sobo as a professor is a NO for me. She makes simple things so difficult for no reason as if her PHD means something & justifies it...
This class is not difficult, but it is tedious. Purposeful or not, she comes off as ethnocentric and overly feminist in the annoying sjw way. If you can ignore that and just do the assignments and tests, you'll do fine. Textbook is required to pass exams, as she wrote it - the index is going to be your best friend.
Do your work (read the textbook and the other articles/videos she puts on blackboard) and you will do fine. The work was not hard, just takes some time.
This class is a lot of work. It is online but a lockdown browser is required for all tests and quizzes. Quizzes and homework every week. The format is simple and easy to use but it is a ton of work. The test questions are from book and videos, they are rarely repeated. A lot of questions are confusing, having more than one correct answer. READ book
This class is a lot of work. It is online but there is lockdown browser. 90% of your grade are tests and quizzes. She rights the textbook, so its hard to find the answers online, you have to really know the book. Some of the questions are confusing. I think it is an easy B, but hard A.
Class is easy. The first third focuses on biology, while the latter two focus on sociological and cultural phenomena. You have to put in the time to do well (10 hrs/wk). In the last two-thirds of the class a great deal of the material takes a political-ideological turn (SJW), which makes quizzes predictable if you know what buzz-words to look for.
I mean, I liked reading about anthropology so it wasnt horrrrrrible. BUT, you really do have to read her text book as you cant really find answers online. Lockdown browsers too. If you have the time to read I would take it.
Very interesting and in-depth content. I enjoyed the class and actually learned somethings. However, the units do require full attention and concentration. They can be long but nothing that can't be done in one long sitting. The professor is VERY clean on expectations and has a lot of tools to help you achieve especially on tests and quizzes.
By far, the best online class I've ever taken. Everything you will need to do is outlined before hand with clear & concise dates which they are due. The material is spaced out very nicely, and the quizzes & tests are very fair. Just keep up with the evenly-paced workload, and you will do fine and learn a lot while at it.
Easy class for an anthro major, especially if you find the topic interesting. The blackboard setup is a little cumbersome. There are 26 activities at 1 point each, 13 quizzes (only the highest 10 count towards grade) and 4 tests (only best 3 count towards grade). Weighted grade breakdown: Activities10%, Quizzes30%, Tests60%.
Great Professor, great class. The textbook is written by the professor and I learned a lot from it. Quizzes aren't too bad (16 minutes for 10 questions). Tests are just longer quizzes, some of the same questions. Great class to take during the covid-19 era.
Worth the tuition!
Professor Sobo is a really nice person and her course is very organized, but I had issues with her textbook and wording. The course is based off of the textbook that she wrote which I felt was too opinionated/biased and often too wordy. I would probably only recommend this course for an Anthro major.
This class is not as hard as people make it out to be. You have 1 assignment due every other week which is normally a discussion + 1 quiz every week based on the reading and the videos. Probably worked 1.5 hours/week. Her class is very organized and very easy to stay on track. Opportunities for extra credit are minimal, you don't need it though.
This course was very cool, and I definitely appreciated taking it. The professor is very knowledgeable and fair. The class can be done by just doing the readings, watching the lectures, doing module assignments, taking module quizzes, and taking the section tests (+final exam). She drops the lowest test and the three lowest quizzes.
Definitely not an easy class but not impossible to get an A but you have to WORK for it! It is lecture heavy and a ton of material! So get ready to work for it! Right before the final the class average was a C and then turned into a B- after the final to give you an idea.
Amazing professor-super helpful, kind, patient and is really straightforward with the material. Her lectures are clear & the format for the course is easy to follow. The work is difficult but as long as you thoroughly do the readings youll ace it! Highly recommend
The entire class is based on her text book that she wrote; you have to read it entirely to pass. The class is very biased and the class seems to be based off entirely on her opinion. The exams have trick questions/opinion based questions. She's also very condescending when she gives feedback on assignments.
Course is based on the online textbook she wrote. Weekly quizzes (10pts), lectures, and activities that are worth 1 point. 3 lowest quiz grades get dropped and there's a total of 4 exams (lowest dropped). She was really weird about giving us a couple extra minutes to complete the quizzes and made a big fuss over it? Read her book!!
