Assignments are quite easy. Works a lot with computer animations in class. Homework is easy online stuff that takes 15 min to do, once a week. Read a new chapter each week on your own and he lectures. Definitely take notes while reading. Does a lot of cool case studies too on diseases. Very accommodating with extra credit. Tests are semi-hard
Great professor. If you're having trouble, go to his office hours; he's super helpful and really wants all of his students to do well. His tests aren't easy but again, go to office hours and he'll tell you exactly what to expect. Also gives plenty of extra credit and the other assignments aren't hard. Can't wait to take him again next semester!
Abreu is pretty hot and cold as a professor. Sometimes, he is very accommodating but he often does not reply to emails. His tests were extremely inconsistent on difficulty and he did not make it clear what information was important. He does give a lot of easy assignments as grade boosters. Prepare to learn a lot on your own.
He is a good guy overall. He really does help out during office hours, but his tests are very inconsistent. I would recommend him because he is a great lecturer but you really have to study on your own to keep up.
Its clear how he grades: problem sets, problem sets, problem sets. Do them and you should be okay. His tests aren't consistent though, and his lectures can get very dry. That being said, if you manage to pay attention and drink a coffee before the lectures, he explains everything very well and quizzestests on exactly what he talks about in class.
He lectures to hear himself talk a lot. His slides include a lot of pictures that you can't really take notes on and you get more out of reading the book than coming to lecture, but lecture is mandatory.
Compared to the other Bio professors, Abreu is your best shot at passing. The reading and lectures may be a bit confusing but he explains everything perfectly during his office hours. He has a lot of interactive stuff to do in class which is really helpful
Overall, great instructor. Lectures are clear and easy to understand, and power points are posted online. He holds longer office hours than any of my other professors, and is always willing to answer questions about the material. The learning catalytics can get a bit erratic: sometimes, he won't do it for a month, only to randomly start again.
Haven't taken biology since freshman year of high school, took his course as a sophomore. Spoke to him on the first day of office hours, and he really took the time to explain concepts. Dr. Abreu has definitely been my best Science-teacher I've had. Next to Dr. Crutchner in the NBB field, pretty respectable guy. 10/10 would dress up as an H2O again
Is very accessible during office hours and explains concepts pretty clearly during lecture. Dr. Abreu doesn't respond to emails often though, and with regrade requests that gets pretty frustrating.
Dr. Abreu is an amazing teacher. He is always available to talk in his office hours and gives plenty of extra credit (one day for just showing up). The tests are fair and easy if you come to class. Most of the questions are touched on in the lectures. However, many students felt robbed on the final test as photosynthesis was covered in half a day.
He's a great prof. and is always helpful at office hours. His exams can be pretty rough but he does give extra credit.
Helps to go to office hours, but he is inconsistent with time, often late, and very inefficient (not entirely his fault because people come in without even reading the textbook or reviewing their notes). Also not the best at explaining concepts during lectures.
He tests on stuff he skimmed through on the final. Also consistently late to class and office hours. Lazy professor, but lectures are clear and you'll be fine if you read the book and do problem sets.
Rarely replies to emails, answers questions vaguely, starts class late often. Does not help much in office hours. Overall, not too friendly or considerate as a professor.
Overall OK professor, a little disorganized and slow with grading/entering in grades. Often late to class. Tests are not bad but certain questions are strange or are not worded clearly. There was one test where during the review it became clear that he did not write the multiple choice questions. Lectures are good, tests mostly reflect lectures.
He shows up late to office hours or cancels, posts grades far later than he should, his tests are relatively easy if you study. Attendance is loosely recorded and 5% of your grade. Mostly won't take him again because he is inconsistent and unreliable outside of the lecture itself.
He's a pretty cool professor. Tests during the semester aren't all that difficult (the average on the last one my semester was an 87%) but the final was for sure more challenging. Class is pretty interactive as he does his best to pose questions and use things like Learning Catalytics. Go to his office hours and get to know him and you will be fine
His classes are very lecture heavy but it's also very difficult to pay attention because they aren't very engaging. His powerpoints are online but they really don't help and they're so unorganized. He "goes by the book" but he also pulled some content from who knows where. Be prepared if you take this class
He seems very informed in biological concepts. However, when it comes to any diagram or mathematical thinking he falls. He does put trick you on some questions of the test. Also, some of his questions test on basic concepts rather than looking at the exceptions so don't try to overthink it. Second exam is basically all on lecture so take notes.
I'm not sure if he knew what he was talking about because all he does is read off the powerpoints. His explanations are surface level but the exams questions are beyond what is mentioned in class. If you want to learn bio take a better professor. if you want an easier A take this prof but get ready to study on your own
A lot of people give him a hard time but if you actually read the textbook, show up to class, and just talk to him he is a really good professor. He gives more than a enough chances to help you raise your grades, spirits, and confidence in this course. Even if you have a problem with a question if you go and talk to him he'll totally listen.
Weekly quizzes and review packets simular to the test questions. He gives you all the material and resources to be successful on his tests and they are straightforward. His lectures contain everything you need to know, so if you use the resources on canvas and go to biomentors you'll be more than prepared. He's a very fair and caring professor.
Abreu is incredibly uninspiring as a professor however, he is a pretty decent and fair guy which makes up for his laziness. Would not recommend but, if you end up in his class he is a fairly easy grader so don't worry.
If you just pay attention to what he stresses in class, you'll be fine. Every single question on the exams are from something he said in class. He has reasonable expectations for an intro class and makes tons of resources available depending on your need.
Abreu has the reputation as being an "easy professor." He's only "easy" if you're not a diligent student. That is, if you study the hard concepts from his lectures, you're wasting your time, because he doesn't give you typical "application-type questions" that you'd see on the MCAT. In this respect, he's very "surfacey" and does not go in depth.
I dont know why people rate Dr Abreu so low, because I think he is a very good professor, hes excellent on explaining concepts in Biology. Now, this is not a professor with whom you can get an A just for showing up in class, but if you work, listen to the lectures, do your readings and ask him for explanations during office hours, youll do fine.
I think that he's really a great prof, took a really crappy bio class in hs but got highest marks on every exam. I really think that the people who argue with him about how his exams aren't fair just are not really putting any effort into the class. Keep up with the material and read the textbook and it's really not difficult to get full marks.
Personally, I didn't pay much attention to lecture and relied more heavily off the textbook, but you would do fine with just what is covered by the slides. The exams are fair and takes the time to go over the entire exam with the class. Quizzes are somewhat weekly and easy as long as you are familiar with the material.
Class was eh. Dr. Abreu is a nice guy but isn't super inspiring. He does a lot to boost your grade and quizzes are all super easy, but I found his tests weird. A lot of people did well on them, but there always seemed to be something that came completely out of left field. Not very structured. He's a hit or miss professor.
Abreu's pretty funny and likes his kids. Class starts when he does; some lectures go by fast, others don't; gives random xc opportunities so show up; not a bad grader (attendance + quizzes + MB boost grades), but some of his tests are just really weird (and he probably just doesn't write them) so prepare for everything. Not a bad prof, nice too.
I've had other biology professors in this department and I can safely say that Abreu was the absolute best. If you do your homework and readings, you will most likely do well in his class, and don't be afraid to ask him questions! He's very nice and helpful and really just wants to see his students succeed. I would've taken him again if I could!
I don't usually complain, but I beg you not to take Abreu. He lies to you in office hours about what to know for the exam, which sounds crazy to say but I am not exaggerating. Lectures ramble on, worksheets are assigned that have nothing to do with the course. Told us in office hours that final would be cumulative, but ended up being all one topic
Abreu is a horrible lecturer - the order of his lectures make no sense and are so hard to follow. Also, his tests are clearly from test banks as he constantly gets confused about the information he' supposed to teach us. Tests correlate not at all to what we (didn't) learn in class, so it's hard to study well. Also the class is just boring.
A decent professor. He tries his best to help you out. He made the class pretty interesting. Would take again
The tests were only based on lecture material. I never used the textbook, just look over lecture slides. Homework isn't mandatory but will show up on the test. He organized the course in a very logical way. I really enjoyed the class.
Really cares about his students and he is more concerned if you learn that about the grade.
Review sessions before every exam. Last unit went by really quickly and his grad student taught bacteria genetics (not very well) which was big on 3rd exam. Tbh people should take their own learning into their hands and ask about those topics instead of complaining that certain topics were unexpected. Honestly content is not difficult.
The exams are pretty textbook heavy. His lectures are not specific at all so do not rely on them for exam material or you will be in for a surprise. With the new curriculum, his class has gotten much more difficult. Given this, Dr. Abreu is a very nice guy and you should always go speak to him if you have any issues he's extremely understanding.
Avoid if you want to do well on your MCAT. His questions are just odd and throw most of the class off. For biol 141 he's fine, but for biol142 he just got harder and relied more on the textbook.
Abreu is the easiest 141 prof for sure. He's engaging and his tests are easy as long as you study. The final reuses questions from the other exams
DO NOT TAKE ABREU! He is so unorganized and lazy about tests and quizzes that getting an A becomes almost impossible. His explanations are ok, but he answered questions wrongly multiple times and put repeated questions on tests and quizzes more than once. He tests you on silly details instead of key concepts. He even forgets to upload grades.
Extremely easy class. Dr. Abreu makes it obvious what you need to know for the exams, and he explains concepts relatively well. We went a little slow at first, so he just cut a bunch of content from the course. A few extra credit opportunities here and there. He covers most of the biochem stuff on the MCAT, albeit probably not in-depth enough...
I emailed Dr. Abreu once before the semester and four times during and never received a reply. He chastizes students for 'bullying' him when they ask questions he is incapable of answering. Thankfully the course is easy to pass without help because he is regularly rude to students and unavailable. Do yourself a favor and take someone else.
DISORGANIZED. More helpful at office hours. Test was poorly written. He canceled some questions that were impossible to solve so every question was worth a little more than 4 points, but students spent time trying to figure out the poorly worded ones and not focusing on the graded Q's which lowered the grade for that exam. Review problem sets.
If you want an easier A for biochem, Abreu is a good option especially if you have a solid bio foundation. His slides are hectic and his lectures tend to be confusing but his exams are reasonable given the materials he gives you. He isn't the easiest to reach. Didn't match my learning style but wasn't terrible.
Dr. Abreu is a kind person but seems very disorganized. It was difficult to meet him outside of class and sometimes he was not in his office during office hours. The exams are not too difficult and he is very forgiving with points if he believes the question was not fair. He also gives A LOT of extra credit!!
Took biochemistry with Abreu. Overall, he was disorganized and sometimes confusing. Some of his chemistry teaching was just flat out wrong. He's a caring guy, but a lot of students were not confident in his teaching. His TAs were also confused because he gave them answers that didn't make sense.
One of the worst instructors I have ever had in my life. Slides are extremely unorganized, gives confusing information, is very rude, and lacks availability. Can be a nice person from time to time. Pick someone else, or you will regret your life choices.
Tons of extra credit this yr, all info on tests comes from lectures/slides. Content is hard to follow though but attend the LA meetings bc the worksheets they go over help on weekly quizzes. Honestly I was lost most of the year but taking notes and reviewing them coupled with the literal tons of extra credit gave me an A, you'll be fine with him.
Dr. Abreu was really cool. His lectures are usually engaging, and he didn't test students over anything not mentioned in class (even if it was in the readings). He's also very understanding and personable. Participation is key, so definitely show up to class and do some of the readings.
Dr. Abreu is truly a kind, funny, and engaging prof. Not much work, tho reading the textbook def helps. Lectures are helpful and he answers literally any question. Mini weekly quizzes and tests are not hard, just study what he teaches. No crazy curveballs. I can't recommend him and his teaching enough. A genuinely great person and great teacher!
Not a good lecturer and EXTREMELY disorganized. Class is so boring and tests/quizzes make up the vast majority of your grade. Not a lot of work outside of class, but be prepared to teach yourself the material.
Decent, but gets sidetracked often and doesnt respond to emails. Moreover, the class is heavily test-based (final exam was 40% of grade). I messed up for the final exam personally and ended with an A-, but for the most part, the class is really easy and as long as you pay attention to lectures and slides, you can get away with an A for the class.
Abreu's class is pretty easy, as long as you pay attention to lectures. Homework is usually just reading and even that is optional as long as you have a good grasp of the material either from AP bio or the lectures. Tests aren't too difficult either. Gives many extra credit opportunities.
His lectures were not engaging and often disorganized. For online classes, he uses a platform called Tophat instead of screen sharing which was hard to follow when trying to review material before an exam. Exams make up the majority of the final grade, but he is mostly straightforward about what he plans to include on the exam. Some extra credit.
Abreu is somewhat disorganized in both lectures and tests, and I'm not a fan of his use of TopHat presentations in the online class. He's a pretty nice guy though, the exam difficulty is reasonable, and he does give extra credit. He's rated a little harsher than he should be on here, imo.
Dr. Abreu is nice, but he's really disorganized. The Canvas page has no structure, and I found that using TopHat was more confusing than helpful. Overall though, the class isn't too difficult, and you should do fine if you pay attention to his lectures.
What's covered in class is on the exam, very straightforward about that. Take good lecture notes and review handouts/quizzes to study for exams. EC throughout/@ the end of semester. Great prof, very knowledgeable. May have to double-email to get response though lol
Low effort slides and sorta low effort presentations. Didn't really follow the syllabus, and was sooo lazy in grading our stuff. I was always sorta confused as to what was graded and what wasn't (pretty sure he didn't know either). At least the tests were basically exactly what we learned in class. Unfortunately it's so hard to pay attention.
Possibly the worst Biology lecturer I've ever had. Lazy and clearly doesn't really care about teaching. Don't be fooled by the high RMP scores he has. The only reason it's like that is because his quizzes and tests are hilariously High School level easy (again, because he is so lazy). Don't take him if you actually need to learn Biology.
Dr. Abreu is one of the best professors for BIOL141. He is very generous with extra credit and the exams aren't memorization based, but rather tests of how well you can apply the information learned in class. The lectures are usually pretty engaging, and Dr. Abreu goes out of his way to hold pre-exam review session before midterms/finals!
Dr. Abreu is an enthusiastic lecturer and a very approachable person, but the tests are usually poorly-worded and not the most reflective of his lecture materials. Slides are kind of low-effort and practice materials seem to be thrown together. His intro bio class is a little bit too chem focused, and an ochem background would definitely help.
Dr. Abreu's a great guy but his class isn't the best. Lectures are a bit unorganized and the slides are done effortlessly. He'll get occupied on irrelevant material and zoom through important concepts that end up being a bulk of the exams, which are more confusing than the biology concepts. But if you just want an easy A this is your class.
Professor Abreu is a solid choice for intro bio class. His exams are mostly based on his lecture. So its important to pay attention in class and take good notes. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. However, his slides are sometimes disorganized and hard to follow. He records his lectures so you can rewatch them again which is helpful.
Dr. Abreu is such an entertaining lecturer. I loved his class so much and he is so amazingly fair. He will throw out a quiz question if it was confusing or unfair and he offers extra credit. Great teacher, great person, I am taking him again every chance I get.
Abreu is a great guy but a pretty mediocre teacher. He doesn't input anything into canvas or if he does the weights are all messed up so you're gonna be guessing at what your grade is the whole semester. Tophat sucks. His slides are garbage, just use the textbook. POGIL activities in class that are just busy work worksheets. Super guy chill tho
great teacher. Lectures are important, but they go by fast. He is also willing to give extra credit. The pop quizzes are easy if you pay attention.
He is a great lecturer, and his midterms are much easier than other profs. The average is in the low 90s. He has extra credit opportunities. If you pay attention and take notes you will be fine. He is entertaining, and it is easy to follow along with his lectures.
His quizzes were tricky but open note so it made the it much simpler. The lab component was a lot of fun! Nothing very unexpected.
gives pop quizzes....
really unorganized, makes you PAY for tophat, never responds to emails, gives pop quizzes when he feels like it.
Abreu is one of my favorite professors at Emory. His grading criteria is very clear: 3 exams, final exam, quizzes (drops 2). He is funny and keeps lectures interesting. Pay attention in class because he tells you the things that are most important to know. Offers 1 index card cheat sheet on each exam. Multiple extra credit opportunities.
Abreu is an easy A for bio 141 + 142 IMO. Lots of assignments, extra credits, and weekly quizzes (mostly take home and you can drop 2 at the end). Exams are pretty straightforward and based on what he says in class. Only cons may be is that he is on the lazier side in terms of updating grades and never responded to any emails I ever sent.
Tests are easy compared to the other sections, which is why students chose Abreu. However, he is terribly disorganized: Doesn't post slides until you ask him to, never responds to emails, and office hours aren't great. You have to weigh these two factors when choosing. Genuinely cares about student success and is a nice guy.
he's a good person and is very caring and accommodating for his students but much of the material will need to be self-taught
do not recommend at all.
Took this class over the summer, and let me just tell you, it's the easiest A you'll ever receive. I'm a BBA major and when people say this is baby bio, I did not believe them at first but now i do. Take it to satisfy your lab/lec SNT for the b school!
He's a nice guy but he's super unorganized, does not reply to emails, doesn't put in grades. You have to teach yourself the chapters and he explains everything in such a complicated way. If you didn't take AP bio or do well in AP bio, don't recommend. His classes average lower than the other bio professors at emory. Just save yourself the stress.
I took the bioethics freshman seminar. Super nice prof who is passionate abt the topic but is EXTREMELY disorganized. Syllabus schedule was dramatically different from what actually happened. The readings were never discussed in class. Very hard to get in contact with and changes deadlines. Doesn't post assignments without repeated student prodding
The worst professor I've ever met. Never reply to the e-mail. Did not solve the problem with the exam. Useless slides. Awful teaching. If you choose him, you need to learn by yourself.
Dr. Abreu doesn't answer emails most of the time, but his lectures are pretty interesting. He's pretty lazy and unorganized but his class is an easy A if you just study the lectures. The textbook is pretty useless if you have taken AP Bio, and most of the test questions are taken from the slides and his lectures anyway.
Easy class especially if you know someone who has taken it before. Test questions are same as prior years and are also reused for the final. Very lecture heavy and boring. He will never answer your emails, don't even try. But not a hard class. Tons of extra credit too.
Don't recommend. Disorganized, all over the place. Selective in who he likes in the class and actually teaches content to.
Abreu is one of the easier 142 professors in terms of exams. All of the professors teach different material & their learning objectives differ. While I had to learn less info than some of my peers for my exams, I worry about my long-term knowledge. Also, attending LA sessions every week is mandatory, but these aren't helpful imo.
His tests are quite easy and he reuses test questions on the exam. His teaching IS EXTREMELY EXTREMELY surface level. Often found myself not paying attention in class because his slides provoke little to no critical thinking. Learned more from the textbook. His class is an easy A though, I should've taken Megan Cole instead smh.
I love Dr. Abreu!! Genuinely such a kind professor who will sit with you and explain concepts and confusing topics in Office Hours. Make the effort to build a relationship with him and he will be in your corner! Beware, he does not answer emails.
He showed up late sometimes and there would be technology issues here and there but I would recommend him to most pre-meds. His class is much easier than the other intro bio professors, so you have more time to study chem. The exams are multiple choice and he reuses questions from previous exams on the final. You can find the answers on quizlet too
Literally does not care. Does not not reply to emails (office hours can only be scheduled via email). Even with several reminders and follow ups. Forgets to charge his laptop which frequently died during lecture. Posts quizzes 48 hours late. Doesn't grade anything until the very last second. The class itself is super easy but avoid this professor.
not accessible outside of class at all. class is super easy but you wont really learn anything tbh.
I took Dr. Abreu over the summer. He's pretty easygoing and isn't out to get you. Great for getting your GER out of the way, but don't expect to learn anything.
Lectures could get boring but the class was pretty easy, especially if you've taken AP bio. The vibe was fun and he was open to adjusting test grades if questions were confusing (and the class fought for it.)
dont take this class for your own sanity
DONT JUST DONT TAKE HIM PLS
I advise you to not take this class for your own greater good
His lectures are extremely disorganized and very surface-level. If you are a pre-med student, this class is going to give you an extremely weak foundation for MCAT.
This class provides a very weak foundation for higher level bio classes, I would recommend taking this if you've taken AP Bio and just need a refresher but if you have little to no previous bio knowledge would not recommend. He gives a lot of extra credit for exams which is very helpful and the class can reason with him for higher grades on exams.
He is a nice person, but not really a nice professor. He seems not very passionate about his work so be ready to be dissapointed if you have a lot of things want to discuss on his seminar. He indeed has some knowledge on the bioethics, but he never goes deep into the topics. You don't have to pay a lot efforts to his course, but just boring.
He tries to be as funny as possible and provides a clear guideline for most things on a test. He offers many extra credit opportunities, and the tests are pretty comprehensive. He has several office hours, but you should check with him before going. LA sessions are required, textbook provides a good preview but does not help much regarding the test
you want an easy A? take abreu. idk what people are saying you don't learn. you do learn a good bit. the class is test heavy; you're screwed if u do bad on a test. for our 88 question final; half of it was past exam questions copy pasted. he is a very nice person and very passionate about what he teaches. only con: less accessible outside class.
did not like his teaching style nor did i feel like his exams were representative of the content of the lectures
Cool guy, but really disorganized. Content doesn't follow logical order. Doesn't reply to emails and is hard to access outside class unless around finals week. Funny and nice, opportunities for extra credit. Exams are exactly from homework and past quizzes, which makes them easy. Easy A , but if you're premed, very surface level bio for MCAT.
Had him for my bioethics freshman seminar. Interesting class, graded based on multiple components of a final project (presentation, essay, bibliography). Easy grading, but you don't receive any grades back until the final grade. Syllabus/homework wasn't super clear, so it was hard to keep track of due dates, but he wasn't strict about it. Nice guy.
Dr. Abreu is not a good teacher. There is not much to say other than he is disorganized and unclear with what he expect us to know. He also does a poor job at explaining things, often overcomplicating things and giving us messy slides covered in paragraphs (assuming he posts the slides without getting angry/talking down to us).
Abreu's class can be challenging, but using resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook can help manage the workload. Mandatory attendance, pop quizzes, and unresponsive emails are downsides, but the exams are straightforward if you stay on top of the material.
Exams are online :)
Least favorite STEM professor so far. EXTREMELY disorganized lectures that force you to dig through several years worth of teaching material to find what you need. Gets sidetracked very easily and failed to teach everything in time, handing us video lectures worth of at least 4 lectures at the end. Easy A, but not worth it if you're premed.
Exams and learning objectives seem unproofread. Midterm questions can be contested, but not final—even when it covers unseen material. Exams and Canvas are disorganized with repeats and missing slides. Review sessions are last-minute. Funny guy with a great life story. Great teaching and analogies, but I wish they matched the exams more closely.
Abreu is really disorganized, but he is committed to teaching. He holds review sessions prior to every exam rather than using the LAs to conduct them. His exams are mostly take home except the final, but your entire grade depends on the final. Lots of extra credit and the class isn't hard if you have taken AP Bio. Be prepared to self study if not.
He is extremely disorganized, and he tends to scare students, but don't fear; take everything he says with a grain of salt. Online Proctored Exams (first 2 only) students did well on both. Barely studied will hurt me on MCAT. Mandatory LA sessions (less than a hundreth of ur grade). His final exam has gotten harder. ez A take this class.
Great professor, though a bit disorganized. He's super funny, and is very clear on what will be on exams. The slides are a bit disorganized, but if you pay attention in class you will be fine. Easy A, will round and offers a lot of extra credit. A lot of assignments he gives aren't the same as what he covers in class- best to not read the textbook.
Dr. Abreu is very engaging, interesting, and clearly passionate. He's such a chill guy and was very understanding. He would often extend deadlines if they fell on the same day as another classes' midterm. He is very transparent about what is expected of his students. Attendance is required but class is very interesting so it's worth it.
Whether you like Dr. Abreu's teaching or not depends on what you wanted to get out of the course. If you're seeking deep biological inquiry and discussion, you probably won't be satisfied (also bc 141 is an introductory course). He's the professor to take to have a well-rounded, basic understanding of bio.
